Glenn Bloomfield Clarindan's brother

Glenn Bloomfield, 72, formerly of Clarinda and College Springs, died June 2 at the Memphis, Mo, Memorial Hospital. Services were held Friday afternoon in Memphis with burial in Friendship Cemetery there.

Mr. Bloomfield was married to Anne Gundy who worked at Swift and Co. He is survived by a son, Larry Bloomfield of South English, Ia, a daughter, Christie McReynolds of Omaha, and a sister, Mrs. Opal Bloomfield of Clarinda.

Services pending for Hazel Hill  

Funeral services for Mrs. Tom (Hazel) [Gell] Hill, 77, are being arranged by Clarinda Memorial Chapel following her death before noon this Monday at a hospital in Ames.         

She had gone Tuesday with her daughter, Mrs. Charles  (Barbara) Richardson after the Ames  

family had visited here and at the home Coin community for Memorial Day. She was taken ill at   Ames, her   response   to treatment seemingly satisfactory late   Sunday.   She   had   an aneurysm at the aorta of the heart.

Mr. Hill had died on April 10, 1975. Their farm was in the Coin area and they moved to Clarinda

four years ago, living at 609 North 20th St.

Mrs. Otto (Della) Davis, 87, of Maxwell, formerly of Clarinda, died Sunday at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. She had been ill following a hip fracture and was in the hospital 11 days.

Services are to be Tuesday at 1:30 pm at the Cooper Funeral Home in Maxwell and interment in the Maxwell cemetery.

She was the grandmother of Mrs. Robert (Nadine Davis) Karg of Clarinda. Her husband died in 1963. Her daughter, Fae Harrison, preceded her in death, but she has a grandchild and four great-grandchildren as survivors. A brother is Joe Halderman of Maxwell and sister Minta Whitney of Des Moines. Guy Davis and Mrs. Fleta Coffer of Sacramento, Calif., are her stepchildren.

She was born at Runnells, daughter of Nancy Belle Jones and Chris Halderman.

Mrs. Orval Allen Taylor native

DALLAS TWP — Mrs. Orval (Ruby) [Pearl] Allen, 72, who has been living alone northeast of New Market since her husband's death in 1963, was found dead in her home May 29 by her daughter, Mrs. Clark (Lucille) Miller and husband of Red Oak. She was born in Dallas Township, Taylor County, to Mr. and Mrs. Edward [James] Glover [Iva Alice Stickelman]. Her mother died a few weeks ago and a son preceded her in death in 1972.

Funeral services were at the Novinger Funeral home in Bedford on Thursday with Carl Cummings officiating. Music was by Mrs. Mildred Stacey and Rodney Gold. Pallbearers were John   Dean   McNeese, Robert Strough, Roger Davison, Francis Henderson, George   John   and Harmon Mothershead.

MRS ALVIN SWANSON

Services for Mrs. Alvin (Mabel) Swanson were held Saturday, June 19 at 2:00 at the Walker Funeral Home with Rev. John Clark officiating. Mrs. Dorothy Johnson and Mrs. Jessie Katharine Swanson of Bethesda were soloists.

Casket bearers were Clark Anderson, Warren Swanson, Darwin Nelson, Marty Franks, Clifford Nelson and Lewis O'Neal. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Mabel [Elenora] was born in Page County on July 24, 1894 the daughter of Andrew and Hannah Anderson Gustafson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Fremont Mission Covenant Church near Essex. She was united in marriage to Alvin [Theodore] Swanson February 27, 1918 and this union was blessed with two children. They farmed in the Bethesda area later moving to Clarinda where she resided until the past three years when she became a resident of Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah after the death of her husband in 1973. She passed away at Hand Community Hospital in Shenandoah Wednesday evening, June 16th, at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 23 days.

Those who will mourn her passing are her son Wayne Swanson of Maryville, Missouri, and her daughter Mrs. Stanley (Lois) Edgar of Shenandoah. Also her four grandchildren Jim, Shirley and Susie Edgar and Sandy Franks and one great grandchild Nicki Edgar. Two sisters survive, Mrs. Jesse (Veda) Steeve and Mrs. Lillie Anderson of Clarinda. She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and four sisters

Robert Fletcher died in Arkansas

Robert L [owell] Fletcher, 71, of Rogers, Ark, died Friday morning following a long illness.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at Walker Funeral home with burial in the Clarinda cemetery.  Mrs. Grace Perry was organist. Casket bearers were: Max Pulliam, Charles Maley, Jack and Ronald Smith, Don Hughes and Mike Diehl.

He was born July 19, 1904, at Clarinda, the son of [Lewis] Everett and Emma [Christina] Fry [Frey] Fletcher. He was married to Gladys Davison, who died in 1957. In 1960 he was married to Nellie Johnson who survives.

Mr. Fletcher left this area about 20 years ago and moved to Lincoln, Neb, later to Colorado Springs, and retired at Rogers, Ark.  He was employed by civil service.

Besides his wife of Rogers, he is survived by three children: Richard Fletcher of Malvern, Ark, Mrs. Don (Donna) Hughes of Brighton, Colo., and Doris Diehl of North Platte, Neb. There are 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Wilma [Irene] Turpen of Rogers, Ark, is a sister.

MRS. CALEB FREED, 1891 - 1976

Minnie Rachel Johnson was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Johnson [Matilda Anderson], and was born January 1, 1891, in Tarkio Township of Page County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Fremont Covenant Church. She was married February 23, 1916 to Caleb [Edgar] Freed, and following that was received into the Bethesda Lutheran Church with her husband. The couple farmed several places in the county, for most of the years on Caleb's home place southwest of Bethesda. They retired in 1951 to the home at 904 Nebraska Street, Essex. They joined St. John's Lutheran Church in 1954. Caleb died in 1967, one year after the couples Golden Wedding.

Three children were born to them, and they survive: Lorene, Mrs. Bernard Nelson, Stanton; Elaine, Mrs. Wayne Royer, Lincoln, Nebraska; and Leslie, of rural Clarinda, on the home place. Minnie is also survived by a sister in law, Mrs. Edwin Johnson, Essex; and by eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and by two brothers, Edwin and Henry, and a foster sister, Karen, Mrs. Ivan Swanson.

Mrs. Freed was always active in church, as long as she was able to attend. She died at Hand Community hospital Thursday, July 1, at age 85.  Services from St John's Lutheran Church, Essex, Monday, July 5, 10:30 am. Words of Comfort given by Rev Willard R Garred. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Nelson and Miss Jane Anderson provided music. Casket bearers Clifford Bowman, Uno Freed, Dennis Meenen, Bertil Engstrom, Wilbur Freed and Randall Swanson. Interment was in Bethesda Cemetery, Bethesda.

Mrs. Black died after long illness   

Mrs. Nellie Irene Black, 76, of Clarinda died Friday morning at Municipal Hospital following a long illness. She was born Aug 12, 1896 at Quitman, Mo, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Jane Baker Bridges.                 

Mrs. Black had lived in Missouri before coming to Clarinda a few years ago.  Her home was at 301 East Logan.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Glen (Roberta Mae) Young of Shambaugh, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.           

Funeral services for Mrs. Black were held Sunday at Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel at Burlington Jct., Mo, with Rev. Lewis Hunter officiating.     

Burial   was   in   the   Ohio Cemetery.  Casket bearers were Marvin Evans, Gary Crowdy, Richard Bix, Dean Young, Jim McAlpin and Robert Black.  Mrs. Doug   Hill   was   organist   and Nancy Fast soloist. Mrs. Emma Baves was at the register.

Glen McMaster died at Maryville

Glen Lewis McMaster, 77, owner and operator of a service station at Clearmont, died Friday [May 25th] at the Maryville, Mo, Hospital, where he had been a patient three months.

Born Dec 28, 1895, in Taylor County, he was married in 1919 at Savannah to Dorothy Corwin, who preceded him in death Nov 23, 1972.

He is survived by a son, Kenneth McMaster of Elizabethtown, Ky.; and daughter, Mrs. Hubert Twaddle of Elmo.

Funeral services were Sunday at Maryville and burial in the Hopkins Cemetery.

Glen McMaster

Funeral services for Glen Lewis McMaster, 77, of Clearmont. Mo., formerly of Bedford, were held May 27 in Maryville, Mo.  Mr. McMaster died May 25 at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, where he had been a patient three months. Interment was at the Hopkins Cemetery.

Born December 28, 1895, in Taylor County, he was the son of William D. [aniel] and Olive [Mariah Lewis] McMaster; his sisters were [Sarah] Ruth McMaster Lewis and Mrs. Mary [Esther] Dowell.

He was married in 1919 at Savannah to Dorothy Corwin, who preceded him in death November 23, 1972.

He was owner and operator of a service station in Clearmont.

He is survived by a son, Kenneth McMaster, of Elizabethtown, Ky.; and a daughter, Mrs. Hubert Twaddle of Elmo, Mo.

Mrs. Glen King's brother died

Walter L. Cooper, 71, died Nov 5 in General Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.  He was born in Oskaloosa, Kan, to John Adam and Anna Mae Cooper and moved to Red Oak when a young man. After several years, he moved to Kansas City.

His mother, father, sister and three brothers preceded him in death.      

Survivors include a son, Larry, of Omaha; two sisters, Mrs. Verna Moore of Red Oak, and Mrs. Glen (Katherine) King of Clarinda, two brothers, Theodore Cooper of Los Angeles, Cal, and William Cooper of Omaha.                

Funeral   services   were held Nov 8 at Meeks' Funeral Home in Kansas City, with burial in the Saint Mary's Cemetery in Kansas City.   

Larry and Mrs. Glen King attended the funeral services.

Williams burial at Braddyville      

[Francis] Byron Williams, 82, of Clarinda, died Friday evening at Municipal Hospital following a long illness.

He was born April 23, 1891, at Elmo, Mo, the son of J. [ob] E. [lias] and Clara Carver Williams.

On Jan 30,1918 he was married to Pauline Smith at Clarinda.  Mr. Williams was a farmer and had worked for telephone exchanges.  Before moving to Clarinda a few years ago they had lived at Conception Jct., Mo.  Prior to that they had lived at New Market.

Funeral services were held this Monday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home with Rev Ray Forsyth officiating. Burial was at Braddyville cemetery.  Mrs. Irene Forsyth was organist. Casket bearers were Raymond Holtman, Tom Riley, F. E.  Auffert, Dick Henry, William Ross and Truman McCurdy.

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife of Clarinda and nieces and nephews.

ClarindanÕs brother died in St. Joseph

Ivo L. [eslie] Perrigo, 82, died in his sleep Jan. 10 at his home in St. Joseph, Mo.  Funeral service and burial were in St. Joseph on Jan. 13.  He has a brother, Herman Perrigo of Clarinda and sister, Blanche Rucker of Portland, Ore.

Mrs. Moritz died after long illness

Mrs. Clark (Sandra Lee) Moritz, 24, of Cedar Rapids, whose critical illness from cancer  led to surgery at Nebraska  Methodist Hospital in Omaha, died Sunday about noon and  services are to be Tuesday.

Mrs. Moritz was formerly "Sandy" Campbell. She was a beautician with Town & Country Beauty Salon in Clarinda, living with her aunt, Mrs. Darwin Buch, and family. She was married Oct 11,1969, and their home has since been at Cedar Falls. They have a son, Corey, who will soon be three years old.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Campbell of Red Oak, born at Red Oak March 9, 1948. Her sisters are Miss Sharon Campbell of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Quentin (Shirley) Hughes of Omaha. Her grandmothers are both of Villisca, Mrs. Arthur Bergren and Mrs. Bertha Campbell.

Sandy was quite active in 4-H while in Montgomery County. At Cedar Falls, the family have been members of Pilot Grove United Methodist Church.  She was graduated from Red Oak High School and Stewart Beauty School at Council Bluffs. The Rev. David Wendell will officiate at   the   services.   The funeral   will   be   at   1:30   pm Tuesday at the Villisca United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Clarinda Cemetery, arrangements in charge of Sellergren-Lindell Funeral Home at Red Oak.

She had been in ill health for about a year.  At her request, memorials in her name will be given   to   American   Cancer Society.

Mrs. Darwin Buch and Bonnie of Clarinda, Mrs. A. F. Bergren, Mrs. Duane Bergren, Lori and Linda of Villisca drove to Omaha Saturday to visit Sandra in the hospital.

Mrs. Gillmore was teacher in area

Funeral services for Mrs. Vona Gillmore, 88, of Clarinda, will be held at 2:30 pm, Friday at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, with Rev D. C. Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Clarinda cemetery.

She died Wednesday afternoon at the Gillespie Nursing Home, after being there for two weeks.

She was born Dec 1,1884, at Mt. Hamill, Ia, the daughter of C. [harles] O. and Margaret Dinsmore Clark, she moved with her parents to Clarinda at the age of nine. She attended school in Clarinda being graduated from high school in 1904. She taught in rural and Clarinda schools.

She was married to Will Millen in Clarinda and was later married to Hal Gillmore. They lived in Iowa until moving to California, where Mr. Gillmore died in March of 1962. She had been making her home since with her sister, Mrs. Belle Sperry, in Clarinda. She was preceded in death also by a daughter, Ruth Millen Olsan, and a sister.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Mrs. David (Joyce) Riser of Lakewood, Colo., a sister, Mrs. Sperry, and two great grandchildren.

Casket bearers for the services will include Ben, Fred and Charles Tomlinson, John Sperry, Kenneth Cassat and G. W. Richardson. Organist will be Mrs. John Sperry, at the register Mrs. Earl Williams and ushers George Segrist and Clark McKeown.

Lavelle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Scoles died after brief illness

Mrs. Pearl Faye Scoles, 68, died Friday at the Hospital in Red Oak after a brief illness. She had moved to Red Oak from Clarinda in 1968 after previously living in Glenwood and Malvern.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm Tuesday at the Nelson-Boylen Funeral Home in Red Oak with the Rev Everett Burham officiating. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery at Red Oak. A memorial is being established with the First United Methodist Church in Red Oak.

A daughter, Mrs. Robert McNees, lives in Clarinda, and son, Ronald in Council Bluffs. She has six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, five sisters and three brothers.

Mrs. Scoles was reared in the Blakesburg area, the daughter of Minor and Mary Ann [Smith] Barnes. She was married to Orie E. [arling] Scoles on Feb 15, 1922, who survives. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Red Oak, the WSCS and Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW.

Former resident died in car crash

A former Clarinda and Shambaugh resident, John Beattie, 64, was killed last Wednesday when the car in which he was riding struck another car and a truck on a state highway just south of Maitland, Mo.

Beattie's son, Keith, 22, of Skidmore, Mo, and his son-in-law, Donald Wardlow, 23, of Maitland, were injured in the crash. Wardlow was driving the car carrying the two Beatties, Also killed in the accident was Lyle Yeager, 51, of Maitland.

The Missouri Patrol said Yeager's truck had slid off into a ditch and Terry Bowland of Maitland had stopped to offer assistance when the southbound Wardlow car came upon the scene and struck the left rear of the parked Bowland auto.

Yeager, who was out of his truck, was running across the highway when he was hit by the Wardlow car, which then continued on, striking the bed of the truck and coming to rest underneath it.

The elder Beattie had lived in Shambaugh six years and in Clarinda three years when he worked at the Pearson Coal Mine here. He moved from the area in the early 1940's. He was born at Barnard, Mo. and lived around the Maryville area, just recently moving to Skidmore.

Services were held at 2 pm Sunday at Johnson's Funeral Home in Maryville.

Besides his son Keith, Beattie is survived by his wife Audrey and son Robert of the home, and sons Marvin of Shambaugh, Wayne of Dallas, Tex, and Leonard of McConnell AFB in Wichita, Kans.; three daughters, Mrs. Pat Spencer of Kansas City, Kans., Mrs. Carol Martin of Wichita and Mrs. Alice Wardlow of Maitland; one brother, Tom and 17 grandchildren.

Dickerson infant burial in Clarinda

 Graveside   services   for   the infant of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dickerson of Omaha were held at Clarinda cemetery Tuesday. The daughter, Pamela   Anne, was stillborn at the St Joseph Hospital in Omaha. Mrs. Dickerson was the former Shirley McElroy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McElroy of Council Bluffs. The other grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Dickerson of Conehatta, Miss. Arrangements for the service were in charge of Walker Funeral Home.

Clarindan's father died in Colorado

Pearl Henry Mackrill, 76, father of Mrs. Charles (Phyllis) Kent of Clarinda, died Sunday at Castle Rock, Colo., the body being brought to Iowa for services held Wednesday at Griswold. He was born at Griswold. Six children survive him, Robert Mackrill of Castle Rock; Mrs. Betty Hillhouse of Denison, Mrs. Phyllis Kent of Clarinda, Mrs. Gail (Nadene) Hoyman of Aurora, Colo., Mrs. Ramona Euans of Griswold and Mrs. Helen Simms of Nashville, Tenn. He has 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Coin area native died in Arizona

Word was received this Monday morning by relatives of the death of Russell Anderson of Mesa, Ariz. He was a native of the Coin area and was retired in Mesa. He lived in Des Moines for many years prior to his retirement. He was married to the former Eva Huddle. The body is being brought back to Des Moines for burial, the time pending.

Mrs. Vera Fuller died at hospital

Mrs. Vera Fuller, 80, of Burlington Junction, Mo, died this Thursday morning at the Municipal Hospital where she had been a patient for a month. Her husband Moses Fuller died in 1966. They had farmed northwest of Clearmont before his death, then Mrs. Fuller moved to Burlington Junction.

She is survived by five sons: Paul of Maryville, Mo, Merlin and Ralph of Burlington Junction, Marvin and Lyle of Clearmont. A son Keith died in August of 1971. There are 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A brother is John Harper, state of Washington and three sisters: Phoebe Clayton and Beulah Gorrell of Clarinda and Ina Jones, state of Maryland.

Burial will be in the Clearmont cemetery. Other arrangements are pending at Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel at Burlington Junction.

Services planned for Mrs. Hawthorne

Mrs. George (Irene B) Hawthorne, 81, died Monday evening at Ft Wayne, Ind, where she had been since July of 1971. Poor health made it impossible for her to stay alone and she went to be near her daughter, Mrs. William (Helen) Kleifgen.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hawthorne will be at 10 am Saturday at Trinity United Presbyterian Church with Dr. J. D. Almes officiating. Helen Hall Hoskinson will be organist. Casket bearers will be Wendell Beery, Beryl Beery, Robert Beery, Lowell Bair, Perry Griffith and Leo Humphrey.

Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery at College Springs with Walker Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include the daughter, Ms William (Helen) Kleifgen of Ft Wayne, and two grandchildren. Mrs. Netha Beery and Arthur Bair of College Springs are sister and brother.

Mrs. Hawthorne was born Feb 14, 1891 in Page County, the daughter of Allen and Mary Irvin Bair. She was married to Dr George A. Hawthorne, a prominent veterinarian of this area, who died in 1955. Both were especially active in their church and veteran organizations.

Their family home was at 707 W Main St.

Mrs. Johnson native Clarindan

Mrs. George (Grace M) Johnson, 67, 321 North 6th St, died Sunday afternoon at municipal

hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home with Rev Dean Gillespie officiating. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband of the home and two children: Wayne Johnson and Mrs. Cedric (Delores) Clary, both of Clarinda There are four grandchildren and two sisters: Maud Seibert of Clarinda and Mabel Baker of Council Bluffs. A son Cecil Eugene died in childhood.

She was born Dec 22, 1905, near Clarinda, the daughter of William and Sara Jane [King] Morris. On May 24, 1922, she was married to George A Johnson. They spent all of their lives here in Clarinda. Mrs. Johnson had been employed at Berry Seed Co.

At the service, Mrs. Grace Perry and Mrs. Joan Archer will be in charge of music. Casket bearers will be Richard Graham, Ferrell Stewart, Ralph Barrows, Estle Glassgow, Grant Maranville and Archie Higgins.
