[Arterburn, Elwin William, 1916-2002]

Elwin William Arterburn

Elwin William Arterburn was born September 6, 1916 in Emerson, IA, the son of Elwin William Arterburn and Leota May Kennedy Arterburn, and died May 21st, 2002 at the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center, where he had been a resident since June 20, 2001.

Elwin married Mae Maxine Briley October 24, 1936 in Rockport, MO; she preceded him in death on December 4, 1995.

He graduated from Glenwood High School in 1934. Elwin had farmed around the Stanton area for the past 50 years. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Red Oak. Elwin enjoyed wildlife, playing pinochle, spending time with family and friends and the simple things in life.

He is survived by his children; Rosalene Moser and husband James of Evergreen, CO, Gail Golden of Red Oak, IA, Bill Arterburn and wife Kay of Stanton, IA and Judy Arterburn of Red Oak, IA. Seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, one sister Elva Hoover of Malvern, IA, plus numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Friends.

Elwin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mae, infant sister Lorrene, sister Ila Boles and two brothers John and Ollie Arterburn and two grandchildren.

Graveside services were held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25th, 2002, at the Villisca Cemetery. Visitation    was    held   Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca. A memorial is being established.

Wendell Beery

Wendell Beery, age 79, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Westridge Care & Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services were held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Clarinda, Iowa, with Rev. Mark Wright officiating. There was open visitation at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial was in Butler Cemetery, Shambaugh, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Presbyterian Church, Clarinda, Iowa or to the donor's choice. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

Wendell Hugh Beery was born October 27, 1922, near College Springs, Iowa the oldest son of Ray Beery and Netha (Bair) Beery. Wendell attended Rice rural school and graduated from Amity High School, College Springs, Iowa in 1940. He married Phyllis Miller, April 28, 1946 in the United Methodist Church, Clarinda, Iowa. Wendell worked at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa in the dairy cattle department testing cows. He then worked at Farmer's Implement and International Harvester dealer in Emerson, Iowa, Red Oak, Iowa, and Clarinda, Iowa. Wendell also traveled for a firm out of Omaha as a salesman for Central Supplies and Rubber. In 1950, he started farming and purchased the farm where he and Phyllis are presently living. Wendell was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church and has served as elder, deacon and trustee.

Wendell was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, and infant grandson. Survivors include his wife Phyllis of the home, daughter Melanie McQuere and husband Gordon of Ypsilanti, Michigan, son Leslie Beery and wife Ellen of Highland, California, grandchildren Anna McQuere and Sarah McQuere, brothers; Beryl Beery of Clarinda, Iowa, Robert Beery and wife Edith of Clarinda, Iowa, nieces and nephews.

Wilma Campbell

Wilma Campbell, age 73, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Monday morning, June 10, 2002, at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa. Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 13, 2002 at the Clarinda Cemetery with Rev. Phil Jorgensen officiating. There will be open visitation at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson Foundation. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Wilma Kathleen Campbell was born February 14, 1929, at Bedford, Iowa, to George Peach and Naomi (Adams) Peach. Wilma was united in marriage July 7, 1952, to Wilbur (Web) Campbell, who preceded her in death May 19, 1999. Wilma was bookkeeper for Opitz Motor Company for 30 years and retired in 1994.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Thomas in infancy; two brothers: Alan Peach and Clark Peach and two sisters, Vera Tait and Erma Shrimpton. Survivors include her son, Larry and wife Vicki Campbell of Clarinda, Iowa; granddaughters: Gwen Campbell of Iowa City, Iowa and Jeni Campbell of New Orleans, Louisiana; sisters: Marjorie Raynor of San Diego, California, Louise Herzberg of Clarinda, Iowa, Dorothy Linkins of Bentonville, Arkansas, Donna Overman of Sidney, Iowa, Marilyn Arrick of Missouri Valley, Iowa and brothers, Paul Peach of Florida and Glen Peach of Michigan.

Iva Lou Hannah

Funeral services for Iva Lou Hannah, 87, of Blanchard, IA, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2002, at the Blanchard United Methodist Church in Blanchard with the Rev. Kirk Seagren officiating. The family will greet friends with a visitation at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.   Memorials   may   be directed to the Blanchard United Methodist Church New Lighting and Electric Fund. Burial will be in the Blanchard Cemetery. Mrs. Hannah passed away on Monday, June 17, 2002, at the Shenandoah Medical Center. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Iva Lou Hannah

Iva Lou Hannah, daughter of Ross E. [dward] Horn and Iris Fern "Marie" [Younger] Horn Tucker, was born on September 8, 1914, in Elmo, Missouri, and passed away June 17, 2002, in Shenandoah, Iowa. She was 87 years of age. Iva Lou spent her early life in Elmo and graduated from Elmo High School in 1932. On November 10, 1933, she was united in marriage with Leslie Andrew Hannah in Maryville, Missouri. They made their home in Blanchard, Iowa. She was a restaurant owner, an Avon sales representative and worked for the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital for many years. She was a member of the Blanchard Methodist Church, the KK Klub and the Order of Eastern Star.

Iva Lou was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Edward Horn, her husband Leslie Andrew Hannah and a son Lyle Keith Hannah. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Max J, Hannah and Lynn Thurber, granddaughters Angela Hannah and Natalie Hannah, grandson, Matt Thurber and his wife Kristi, great-granddaughter, Madison Thurber, granddaughter, Heather Thurber and stepmother, Elise Aubry, all of Omaha, NE, brothers and sisters, Elsie Horn Aubry, Pacific Jct., IA; Leonard Horn, San Antonio, TX; Steven Horn, Glenwood, IA; Robert Horn, Clearfield, UT, Roland Horn, Omaha, NE, Iven Horn, Marysville, KS, Coleen Lipert, Omaha, NE, Roxanna Horn, Pacific Jct., IA; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 20, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Blanchard, Iowa. Giving the words of comfort was the Rev. Kirk Seagren. Organist was Anita Vogel and vocalist was William Mannasmith. Musical selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer". Attending the memory register was Maxine Larson and caring for the flowers was Diana Hall. Ushers were Carl Davis and Roland Horn. Casket bearers were Harold Cheesman, Charles Hall, Dean Hall, Steven Horn, Leland Loghry and Tony Menousek. Clarinda Chapter #214 of the Order of Eastern Star conducted rites.   Interment   was   in   the Blanchard Cemetery.  Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Rickie L. Kimbro

Rickie Kimbro, age 45, of Clarinda, Iowa died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at his residence in Clarinda, Iowa. Private graveside services were held at the Villisca Cemetery, Villisca, Iowa.  

Rickie L. Kimbro was born January 4, 1957, at East St. Louis, Illinois, to Carolyn Williams.

Rickie was preceded in death by his grandparents and infant son Matthew. Survivors include his mother Carolyn Puriskie and husband Chester of Villisca, Iowa.

Billie Miller

Billie George Miller, 67, of Coin, died June 16, 2002, in Coin. He was born April 18, 1935, in Maryville, Mo., to Isaac and Della (Overmier) Miller. Growing up in the Maryville, Mo., area, he received his education from the Maryville school system. On March 20, 1952, he married Norma Nuckolls in Maryville, Mo. As a young man, he was employed at the Maryville Lumber Company and then joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for 31 years. During that time, he served three tours of duty in Vietnam, receiving 17 medals. He was a member of the Noncommissioned Officers Association and attended the Coin United Methodist Church.

Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Norma; brother Richard L. Miller and sister, Carol Blauch Jerious.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmie and Janice Miller of Omaha, Neb.; Terry Miller of Clarinda; Billie G. Jr. and Anna Miller of Clinton, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Winston of Richland, Wash.; and Marjorie and Patrick Maio of New York, N.Y.; sister-in-law and her husband, Gloria and Jim McCowen and sister-in-law, Frances Hammers, all of Coin; special friend, Laura Moyer; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were June 20 at the Coin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Stevens officiating. Honorary bearers were Bill Annan, Jim McCowen, Billie G Miller III, Brian R. Miller, Clinton R. Miller, Duane S. Miller, James R. Miller and Jeremy A. Miller. The American Legion Post #88 of Shenandoah conducted the military rites and burial was in Elmwood Cemetery in Coin. Selby Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements

Geraldine Rosetta Frist Miller (Gerry)

Geraldine Rosetta Frist Miller (Gerry) was born July 12, 1924 near Jackson, Ne, to Orpha Lucille Geesaman Frist and Williber Stiles Frist. She passed away on June 6, 2002 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center. Gerry grew up three miles southeast of Villisca IA. When Gerry was six her father Williber died of blood poisoning from a splinter. She attended Sunny Slope School in Page County, was a member of the Valley Township 4-H Club, graduated from Villisca High School in 1942, and was an active member of the Villisca Advent Christian Church.

In Sept. 1942 she started teaching at Fairview Country School. She also taught at Sunny Slope School. She taught a total of five years in these small, one-room schools.

On June 5th, 1947 she married Edward Dale Miller in the Advent   Christian   Church   in Villisca, Ia.   The   newlyweds started their home in Clarinda. To this union were born Judith Kay, Linda Rae, Barbara Dale and Shirley Jo. The couple celebrated    their    55th    wedding anniversary   on June 5, 2002. While a homemaker, she served as   a substitute teacher in the Clarinda School   System.   She retired in 1980 after serving as McKinley School secretary for eleven years.      She and Dale spent the next 22 winters   in Arizona with family.  Her hands were always busy with hobbies, crafts and quilt making (one for each grandchild upon their high school graduation).    Since her marriage, she was   an   active member of the Clarinda Trinity Presbyterian Church, teaching and   serving   on   most   of the church boards.

Gerry was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Helen Marie Frist Smith. Survivors include her brother Raymond (Welton, Az); her husband Dale of the home; daughters Judy Shoffit (Van Buren, Mo), Linda Vader (Omaha, Ne), Barbara Akers (Clarinda, Ia) and Shirley Roehl (Blaine, Mn); grandchildren Shawn Thompson, Heather Thompson Rehder, Aaron Vader, Casey Vader, Aubrey Roehl, Elise Roehl, Cody Akers, great grandchild Chase Rehder. She is also loved by many other family, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 10, at Trinity Presbyterian Church with burial at Covenenter Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Nodaway Valley Free Clinic. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret "Marg" Turk Murphy, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Friday morning, May 24, 2002, at Clarinda Regional Health Center following a brief illness.

A celebration of life service was held Monday, May 27, at St. Clare Catholic Church, Clarinda. A complete obituary will be published next week. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Jack Newland

Jack Edward Newland, age 61, was born March 28, 1941 at Putman County, Missouri to Ralph Newland and Mable (Morgan) Newland. He died Sunday morning, May 19, 2002, at Clarinda Regional Health Center following an extended illness. Mr. Newland was a laborer in the fertilizer industry. Funeral services were held in Ottumwa, Iowa, with burial at Thompson Cemetery, Hartford, Missouri. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Clarinda was in charge of arrangements.

Derrell W. Phillips

Derrell W. Phillips, 61 of Clarinda, died Sunday, Feb.  12, 1995 at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born Feb. 13,1933 in Farragut, the son of Clarence I. and R. Gladys (Williams) Phillips.

On July 25, 1954, Phillips was married to Arleen Herzberg. He farmed near Clarinda the past 40 years until health no longer permitted him to participate in farming.

Phillips was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, Clarinda. He and his wife served as youth counselors and he had served as an elder in the church.

He is survived by his children: Dwight Phillips and Cecilia Candelaria, Clarinda; Danny Phillips, Clarinda; and Starlene Byers and husband Phil, Clarinda. There are eight grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Clarence and his wife Mary, San Pedro, Ca.; sister, Audrey Giles, Trinidad, Texas; sister-in-law, Mary Phillips, Council Bluffs; mother-in-law, Helen Straub and her husband, Melvin, Clarinda; brother-in-law, Ermal Herzberg and his wife Sharon, Clarinda.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Arleen, his parents  and brother, Lester.

Services were Wednesday, Feb. 15 at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarinda, with interment in the Clarinda Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established.

Dorothy Ellen Schmidt

Dorothy Ellen Schmidt of Essex, Iowa was born August 6, 1922, in Sidney, Iowa the daughter of Vernon Opelt and Lucille Gray Opelt and died May 20, 2002 at the Good Samaritan Center in Villisca, Iowa, where she had been a resident the past month and a half.

Dorothy married Jacob Schmidt September 16, 1944 in Hiawatha, Kansas; he preceded her in death in April 1976.

Dorothy had worked at the Shenandoah Medical Center in the dietary department for 10 years, retiring in 1987. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Shenandoah, IA. Dorothy's hobbies included her family, a Chihuahua dog Charlee, reading and visiting with friends.

She is survived by a son Jeff Schmidt and wife Jana of Essex, IA and a daughter Julie Morrison and husband Bert of Villisca, IA. Seven grandchildren: Ronnie Gillespie of New Market, IA, Jerry Gillespie of Jackson, TN, Jeremy Schmidt and Jake Schmidt of Essex, IA, Jesse Nuckolls of Shenandoah, IA, Kahla Morrison and Dalton Morrison of Villisca and one great granddaughter: Josie Ann Gillespie of Jackson, TN. Sisters Jean Munsinger and husband Luther of Northboro, IA and Phyllis Jorgensen of Colorado plus several Nieces, Nephews and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, step father Loyal Johnson, husband Jacob and a daughter Jean Ann Gillespie.

Graveside services were held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 22nd at the Sidney Cemetery with Rev. Erik Corley officiating. Visitation was open at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca. A memorial is being established. Wolfe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
