Died -
At his residence near Villisca, on Monday December 15, ’79, James Carlisle, nearly 80 years of
age.
Mr. Carlisle was one of the earliest settlers of
Montgomery County, have moved from Highland County, Ohio about 30 years
ago. He was a man of great endurance
and well suited for the struggles of pioneer life. He has many friends living in this vicinity
who will regret his death. He was
buried Tuesday in the old graveyard southwest of town.
Penwell
After suffering with consumption and indigestion for over
a year, Mrs. William Penwell laid
down life’s burdens at her home five and one-half miles south of town last
Thursday afternoon. She has been very
low for the past eight weeks and on the day above mentioned had three sinking
spells the last one occurring about two o’clock at which time she bade all
good-by and passed from labor to reward.
The funeral was held Saturday from the M. E. Church in this city and
the remains are to be placed in the Villisca Cemetery beside a little
daughter Minnie who died over a year ago.
Rev Dudley officiated.
Mrs. Penwell, formerly Miss Ella Shepherd was born in 1877 and has always resided in
this vicinity. She was one of those
noble mothers and wives which a community can ill afford to lose and her
demise is deeply felt.
She leaves a four-year-old daughter, Delva (Should be
Belva), a husband, father, mother, five brothers and six sisters.
Elizabeth Virginia
Carlisle
A private service for Elizabeth Virginia Carlisle will be
held at a later date.
Elizabeth Virginia Carlisle. 85, of Grants pass, Oregon,
died Saturday, August 10, 2002, at Royale Gardens Health Care Facility in
Grants Pass.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lovejoy Hospice,
939 SE Eighth Street, Grants Pass Oregon.
She was born in September 16, 1916 in Colorado Springs,
Colorado. She graduated from Inglewood
High school in Las Angeles in 1934. Her family moved to Stockton, California in
1934 where she attended art school.
On October 11, 1937, she married Emmett Earl
Carlisle. They divorced in 1959.
For more than 25 years, she work
as head cook at La Salette Care Facility in Stockton. After her retirement, she moved to Grants
Pass to live with her son and daughter-in-law.
She enjoyed art, sewing, knitting, crocheting and Folk
and square dancing. She enjoyed
driving her 1952 MGTD.
Survivors include her son, Gordon, Grants Pass, Oregon; a
daughter, Marjorie Lichtenberg, Perry, Utah, a sister, Marjorie Brooking,
West Point, California; seven grandchildren and five great
grandchildren.
She was preceded by a sister, Ester Nanette Burnside and
two brothers Irl Burnside Junior, and William Robert Burnside.
Arrangements were by Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives.
Fred E. Carlisle
Fred Earl Carlisle, former Ashland resident, died April
21, 1970 in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
Carlisle had lived in Ashland more than 10 years, before moving to
Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1960.
Funeral services will be held in O’Hair Chapel, Klamath
Falls, at 1:30 pm, Tuesday April 28.
Graveside services will be held in Stockton, California, April 29.
Carlisle was born in Villisca, Iowa, Dec 31, 1893, the
son of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Carlisle.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Carlisle of Klamath
Falls, a daughter, Elda Clyde of Redding, California; and sons George B
Carlisle, Menlo Park and Emmett E. Carlisle of Stockton, California.
Wanda R. Babcock
The funeral for Wanda Ruth (Sander) Babcock, 62, of
Ashland, Oregon who died Saturday, September 27, 1986, will be at 1 pm,
Friday the Church of the Latter-day Saints, East Main and Clay Streets,
Ashland, Oregon. Interment will be in
Memory Gardens Memorial Park. Memory
Gardens Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Babcock was born July 23, 1924 in Villisca,
Iowa. She was a graduated of Lakeview,
Oregon, High School.
On March 13, 1956, in Salt Lake City, Utah, she married
Edwin Babcock, who survived.
She worked at the Norton Air Force Base, Redlands,
California, and Lockheed Corporation in Burbank, California, before moving
the Ashland in 1956 from Alturas, California.
She was a secretary at Bear Creek Cooperation.
Mrs. Babcock was a member of the Ashland Tops Cub, Pomona
and Bellview Granges, Christian Women’s Club, and the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints, Ashland’s First Ward, being active in its Women’s
Relief Society.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include one son,
Darrell E. Babcock, Salem, Oregon; one brother Carlos Sander, Medford, four
sisters, Linea Johnson and Sandra Godlove, both of Ashland, Moya Woods,
Springfield, Missouri, and Aneva Wiens, Bowling Green, Missouri.
Pearl Penwell Died
On Sunday, April 15, 1900, Pearl, aged nine months, youngest child of William Penwell and wife, died after a long illness with lung
trouble. God has taken our Easter
greeting buy all will be bright on the other shore. The parents have the sympathy of many
friends.
The bereaved parents wish to express their thanks for the
kindness shown them by neighbors and friends, in the sickness and death of
their little one.
Silas Shepherd,
Pioneer, Dies at the Age of 85
Silas Shepherd, resident of Villisca and vicinity for 59
years, died Monday at 8:30 pm at his home here, his death resulting from the
infirmities of old age.
He was born November 7, 1844, in Wapello County, Iowa,
and was 85 years old at this death.
All his life he lived in Iowa, with the exception of two years in
Illinois. In 1852, he went to Union
County, Iowa near Afton and resided there until 1871 when he came to
Villisca, and the remainder of his life was spent near here.
He was married in 1865 to Miss Emma Lewis of Afton, Iowa,
and to them were born twelve children, those living are Mrs. Lou Higgins,
Mrs. Myrtle Gaskill, Mrs. Bertha Parcher, Mrs. Ruth Spargur,
Walter, Charley, Ed, and Russell Shepherd of Villisca, Mrs. George Carlisle
of Bonanza, Oregon and Mrs. I N Craighead of Pittsburg, California. Mrs. Shepherd preceded her husband in death
August 29, 1905, a daughter, Mrs. Ella Penwell died
in 1901 and a son, Lon died in 1923.
Mr. Shepherd’s funeral was held in his home Wednesday at
2:30 pm conducted Rev George A Lawton of Villisca and Rev E. S. Memoher of Mount Ayr,
Iowa. The singing was by Mr., and Mrs.
H. H. Nordyke, Mrs. L W Scott, and H E Dow, with
Mrs. F G. Kunce at the Piano. Pall Bearers were S. C Ashmore,
Ray Mann, Center Gourley, Forrest Means, John Smith
and Charles Sweeten, and interment was in the Villisca Cemetery.
Those here from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Shepherd, Farragut, Iowa, Mrs. Ida Jordan, Des Moines,; and
Charles Shepherd, Afton, Iowa.
Belva Opal Carlisle Zifka
The funeral service for Belva
Opal Zifka will be at 1 pm Wednesday at the First
Baptist Church in Riddle. Earl Craker will officiate.
Interment will be at the Riddle Cemetery.
Mrs. Zifka, 97, of Rogue River,
Oregon, died Friday, October 12, 2001, at Rogue Valley Medical Center,
Medford, Oregon.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart
association, C/o Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, 2065 Upper River Road,
Grants Pass, Oregon.
She was born September 20, 1904, in Klamath Falls,
Oregon, the daughter of George and Nell Shepherd Carlisle. On August 23,
1922, she married Jesse Lilly, who died in 1978.
The Lillys moved to Ashland in
1938 and owned and operated Lilly’s Market.
In 1945, the moved to Riddle, where they owned and operated another
market, also called Lilly Market. They
moved to Diamond Lake, where they owned and operated the grocery store and
tackle shop for 20 years.
In February of 1986, in Beaverton, she married Charles Zifka, who survives.
Mrs. Zifka was a member of the
First Baptist Church of Riddle, Order of the Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge.
She enjoyed cooking and sewing.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a
daughter, Virginia Victor, Rogue River; a son, Robert Lilly, Beaverton, five
grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

Mrs. C. Austin Wagaman (Ona Mae Shepherd)
Funeral services for Mrs. C Austin Wagaman
were held Monday afternoon in the Methodist Church conducted by the Rev L H. Athey. The singing
was by Mrs. Albert F. Davie and Mrs. Fredrick Fisher, accompanied by Mrs. J.
L. Wheeler, and in charge of the flowers were Eunice Long, Hanna Higgins,
Eula Higgins, Lucile Daub, Lula Apple, and Maud Gillette. The pall bearers were Edd
Miers, George Miers, Ray
Higgins, Harry Higgins, Willie Shepherd, and Paul Long and the interment was
in the Villisca Cemetery.
Ona May Higgins, eldest
daughter of James A. and Lou E. Shepherd Higgins, was born near Hawleyville, Iowa in Page County, June 16, 1888, and died
at her home on West Fourth street in Villisca, April 1, 1948 at the age of 59
years. She was united in marriage to
c. Austin Wagaman in Page County, February 11,
1906, and to this union seven children were born. They are Helen (Mrs. Clyde Lewis), Nodaway,
Fred Hopkins, Missouri; Lucile (Mrs. Glen Hazelton), Clarinda; Harold,
Newberg, Oregon; Orvis, Villisca; and Robert and Davis at home.
Most of Mrs. Wagaman’s life was
spent in Iowa, with the exception however of a few years in South
Dakota. She resided in Villisca, fifty
years. She was a member of the United
First Methodist Church and was in attendance when her health permitted. She was preceded in death by her father and
mother in 1939.
Besides her husband, children and grandchildren, she
leaves a brother Fred Higgins, and two sisters, Mrs. E. H. Wagaman and Mrs. Donald Fisher, all of Villisca.
Charles Theodore
Shepherd
Charles Theodore Shepherd, 70, of Emmett, Idaho died
Saturday, August 23, 2003 at home with his family by his side. He fought a long battle with emphysema.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 29, 2003 at
2:00 pm at Summers Funeral Home. Ustick Chapel, 3629 Ustick
Road, Meridian, Idaho. Burial will follow in Dry Creek Cemetery.
Viewing will be held Thursday, August 28th
from 4 pm until 8 pm at Summers Funeral Home, Ustick
Chapel, Meridian.
“Chuck” as friends and family know him, was born to Merle
Shepherd and Dovie Murray Shepherd on March 2, 1933
in Boise, Idaho. He was the first of
seven children. He attended Cole
School. The family moved to Klamath
Falls, Oregon where they lived until Chuck was twelve, and then they moved
back to Boise.
After school, Chuck traveled around the country and then
joined the Army. He was assigned to
the 82nd Airborne, went to jump school in Fort Benning,
Georgia, and was sent to Korea in 1952.
There he was assigned to Infantry Division 64th, TK
BM. Tank Division for the rest of the
war. After the war church returned
home and Met LaRitta Hope. They were married August 21, 1957. Together they had four children: Brenda, Scott, Lonny, and Shannon. After 20 years of marriage, LaRitta passed away.
On March 8, 1979, Chuck married Lois Brigman. They had two children: Brandi and Ted,
along with seven step-children.
Chuck worked for many years before starting his own
business “Shepherd Safe & Vault” in 1975.
In the late 80s, Chuck became ill, but continued to teach Safe &
Vault Technical Classes.
Chuck enjoyed fishing, camping and building model
tanks. He invented many things to help
with his work and hobbies. He was very
competitive at anything he did.
Chuck was also involved in the VFW. He became a Lifetime member of the
following Veteran Associations: VFW. DAV, American Legion, 82nd
Airborne Division Association. The VFW
was his passion in his later years.
He was preceded in death by both
parents, and three brothers, Douglas, Gerald, and Richard.
He is survived by his wife, Lois, and six children,
Brenda (Russell) Williams, Scott Shepherd, Lonny Shepherd, Shannon Shepherd,
Brandi Shepherd, and her friend Don Pearson, and Ted Shepherd; six step
children Michael Brigman, Sheri Alfred, Lyle Brigman, Jolie Ramirez, Joni Bale, and Jody Brigman. From both
unions he had 13 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
A special thanks to Horizon Hospice, Cheryl, Kathy, Kyle
and Terry, and also a special thanks to a long time friend, Earl McKie and also to Debbie J Shepherd who spent countless
hours with her father-in-law.
Following the graveside service a gathering will be held
at VFW, 3308 Chinden Blvd.
Virgil Clark
Virgil Louis Clark, the
son of Joseph A. and Catherine (Whitney) Clark was born April 17, 1939 in
Iowa City, Iowa. He died on Monday, November 13, 2006 at Immanuel Medical
Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 67 years, 6 months and 27 days.
Virgil was raised in
Red Oak where he attended school. He entered the U.S. Army in 1957 and was discharged
in 1963. Virgil was united in marriage to Gladys Page on September 14, 1959
in Red Oak, Iowa. He drove a truck for many businesses in Red Oak, including
the Farmers Mercantile, Red Oak Transfer & Storage and NaChurs. Most recently, Virgil worked for the City of Red
Oak with the street department. He retired from the City of Red Oak in 2001.
Virgil enjoyed fishing, shooting guns, wood working and hunting mushrooms. He
loved his family, grandchildren, dogs and lending a helping hand to friends.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Raymon.
Virgil is survived by
his wife, Gladys Clark of Red Oak, Iowa; two sons: Joseph Clark of Red Oak,
IA and Curtis Clark of Stanton, IA; daughter: Sheryl Davidson of Red Oak,
Iowa; 6 grandchildren: Daniel Clark, Benjamin Clark, Jenilee
Clark, Adam Clark, Sarah Clark and Stephanie Davidson; brother: Joseph
“Frank” Clark and wife Pauline of Meridan, MN; 3
sisters: Elsie Nelson and husband Carol of Owatonna, MN, Marjorie Templeton

Raymon Clark
Raymon LeRoy Clark, the son of
Joseph and Catherine Marie Whitney Clark, was born January 6, 1932 in Red
Oak, Iowa. He died after a short
illness at the University of Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa on January 18, 1985
at the age of 53 years and 12 days.
He
was united in marriage to Guila Gee Fisher on July
1, 1962 in Red Oak, Iowa. He lived
most of his life in Red Oak and attended the Church of the Nazarene. He was a past member of the Eagles Lodge of
Red Oak. He was preceded in death by
his father.
Raymon is survived by his mother Marie Clark of Red Oak;
one son Donald of Red Oak; two brothers Virgil of Red Oak, Iowa and Frank of
Meriden, Minnesota. Also by three sisters
0 Elsie (Mrs. Carol) Nelson of Owatona, Minnesota;
Marjorie (Mrs. Clarence) Templeton of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri and Velda (Mrs. Howard) Pierson of Mount Ayr,
Iowa and by other relatives and friends.

were held at the Sellergen-Lindell Funeral Home in
Red Oak, Iowa on January 21, 1985 with Rev Clem Keyes officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery,
Red Oak, Iowa.
Villisca child dies in
Traffic Accident
Four-year-old
Heather Fisher, Villisca, died in
a one-vehicle accident Wednesday morning when the Blazer in which she was
riding overturned in a ditch.
According
to the sheriff’s report, Carolyn Kay Fisher, 26, Villisca was southbound on a unmarked county gravel road, 2 ¾ miles southwest of
Villisca, when she lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle went off into a ditch on the
left side of the road and overturned.
Villisca
Rescue Unit arrive on the scene shortlay
at 5:56 am.
Heather
was pronounce dead at the Montgomery County Memorial
Hospital.
Carolyn
and two children, four-year-old Holley and three-month-old Tyler were treated
and released.
Damages
were estimated at $4,700 to the Blazer.
The accident was covered by Sheriff Marvin Meggison
and Deputy Jim Geer.
Larry F. Murren
Funeral services for
Larry F. Murren, 52, of Villisca, Iowa were held
February 1, 1995, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa, with the
Rev Sandra Wainwright officiating.
Burial was in the North Page Cemetery of rural Villisca.
Larry, son of Earl and
Edith Riggle Murren, was
born at Villisca on October, 18, 1942, and died January 29, 1995 at the
Clarinda Municipal Hospital. His death
followed a long illness.
He was married to Mary
Jane Parmeter on December 24, 1963. They were later divorced and he married Guila Fisher on February 18, 1978. He had been a horseshoer
and truck driver before health forced his retirement.
He is survived by his
wife, Guila, Villisca; daughters Betty Freese, Anita, Iowa, Frances Murren,
Clarinda, Iowa and Lisa and husband Roger Barr, Clarinda; son Chad and wife
Amy Murren, Villisca; nine grandchildren, Devin and
Mindy Barr, Jake McMillin, tanner Barr, Tiffany and
Shaune Freese, Samantha
Barker, Katie Murren and Ashley Anderson; one great

Linda Lou Geer
Linda Lou Geer, infant
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Geer, born May 12, 1962, passed away December
23, 1962 at the age of seven months, eleven days.
She is survived by her
parents, a twn sister, Lisa Ann, and two brothers,
Douglas and Scott. Grandparents are
Mrs. and Mrs. Birge Geer of Clarinda and Mr. Ed Wagaman of Villisca, Iowa.
Paul Wagaman
Paul Fred Wagaman, age 68, of Glenwood, Iowa, formerly of Southwest
Iowa and Northwest Missouri area died Monday, December 16, 2002, at 5:08
a.m., at Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs, Iowa, following a brief illness.
Funeral services was
held 1:30 p.m., Thursday, December 19, 2002, at Walker-Merrick with Pastor
David Pugh officiating. There was open visitation at the funeral home. A
memorial will be established. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery, rural
Clarinda, Iowa, with a graveside service, 1:30 p.m., Friday, December 20,
2002. Walker-Merrick was in charge of arrangements.
Paul Fred Wagaman,
was born May 1, 1934, at Villisca, Iowa, to Fred Elmo Wagaman
and Amy Irene (McElroy) Wagaman. Paul grew up in
the southwest Iowa and Northwest Missouri areas.
On August 25, 1956, he
married Leota "Mae" Baker. To this union
was born Kathy Kuhl of Glenwood, Iowa, Donald Leroy
and Paul Eugene "Buck" of Glenwood, Iowa, Mrs. Robert "Janice
Louise" Manning of Fort Mills, South Carolina, Calvin Joe of Council
Bluffs, Iowa, Mrs. Rick "Rhoda Mae" Long of Thurman, Iowa and Fred
Eugene Wagaman (Laura) of West Branch, Iowa.
Paul worked at the
Shenandoah Nurseries, Mills County Equipment, Glenwood State School and
ConAgra before retiring. But those who knew Paul,
knew he was really a horse trader by nature. Paul was also a joke teller with
a lively sense of humor. He was an extremely generous man always giving to
those who needed. He loved rodeos and anything to do with animals. Paul also
enjoyed gardening and would can or cook what he grew.
He leaves to mourn him,
his wife and children, his brother Richard Wagaman
of Essex, Iowa, sisters: Mrs. Robert Gray (Juanita), New Market, Iowa, Mrs.
Herb Thomas (Eula) Red Oak, Iowa, 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and
a host of friends and relatives. Preceding Paul in death were his parents,
and sister: Carole Yvonne Hummel.
Helen Opal Lewis
Helen
Opal Lewis, daughter of Ona (Higgins) and Austin Wagaman, was born September 18, 1906 in Adams County,
Iowa and passed away on March 21, 1979 at Rosary Hospital in Corning,
Iowa.
Except
for 7 years which she pent in South Dakota as a
child, she lived all her life in the Nodaway and Villisca Communities.
On
September 14, 1929, she was united in marriage to Clyde S. Lewis at the
Villisca Methodist parsonage.
She
was a member of the Nodaway United Methodist Church for over 50 years and
active in the Methodist Women’s Circle.
She was a member of a neighborhood club and a card club.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother and two
infants: Ona Elaine and Stanley Dean.
She
is survived by her husband, Clyde Lewis, for brothers Fred Wagaman of
Coin, Iowa, Orvis Wagaman of Omaha, Nebraska,
Robert Wagaman of College Springs, Iowa, and Davis Wagaman of Villisca, Iowa; two aunts Mrs. Donald Fisher
of Villisca, Iowa and Mrs. Della Shepherd of San Diego, California and one
great aunt Mrs.. Ruth Williams of Villisca and many nieces and nephews.
Services
were Saturday March 24, 1979 at the United Methodist Church in Villisca with
Rev Clair Kerns officiating. Honorary
Casket bears were Casey Johnson, Raymond Knudson, Willie Orme,
Cliff Groff, Raymond Spring, Marion
Hendrickson. Casket bearers were
Richard Wagaman, Roger Lantz, Jan Wagaman, Orvis Lee Wagaman,
Steve Larson, and Kurt Wagaman. Flower bears were Mrs. Florence Mitchell,
Mrs. Casey Johnson, Mrs. Raymond Spring, and Mrs. Willie Orme. Music was by Mrs. Robert Poston,
accompanied by Mrs. Quincy Dunn.
Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery, Villisca, Iowa. Arrangements were by Sutphen
Funeral home in Villisca, Iowa.
Belva Mae Clark
Belva Mae Clark, the daughter of Fred & Jessie Ross
Higgins, was born August 16, 1912, in Page County, Iowa; and entered into
rest in Susanville, California, on September 24, 1984, at the age of 72
years, 1 month, and 8 days.
Belva was united in marriage to Vernon Schreck. Three
children were born to this union with a son and daughter dying in
infancy. In 1965, Belva
married Ray Clark, who preceded her in death. Besides her husband, Belva
was preceded in death by her parents, son Vernon, Junior, daughter, Judy,
granddaughter, Vickie Rhamy.
She
is survived by her daughter Verla McLaughlin of
Jamestown, California; sister Opal Brown of Yuma, Arizona; brother James
Higgins of Fort Madison, Iowa; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren;
many nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Belva was a kind and caring person who devoted much of
her life to carding for other people in nursing homes and other settings.
Her
funeral will be Monday, October 1, 1984 at 2:00 pm at Sutphen
Funeral Home, Villisca, Iowa.
Interment will be in Prairie Rose Cemetery in rural Adams County,
Iowa.
Death of Grover Long
Young Man Injured by Dive
into Nodaway River on July 20, 1911, and Had Vertebrae Crushed—Been Paralyzed
Since
Yesterday
morning about eleven O’clock occurred the death of
Grover Long at his home on West Fourth Street, the cause of which was
paralysis due to an accident occurring July 29, 1911, familiar to most Villisca
Citizens. In a dive into the Nodaway
River just east of Tyler’s Park, Mr. Long plunged into water not over
eighteen inches and struck his head on the bottom of the river with such
force that the fifth dorsal vertebra was dislocated and crushed, leaving him
paralyzed in this body and lower limbs.
No hope was entertained for the injured man at the time buy by
remarkable vitality and constant care he had survived until yesterday
morning. About two weeks ago he caught
a bad cold, which caused a change for the worst.
Grover
Long was born near Nodaway, Adams County, Iowa on April 11, 1884, and was 29
years, 7 months, and 1 day of age at the time of his death. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Long,
now living in the Iveyville. And lived in vicinity of Nodaway and
Villisca throughout his life.
On
Oct 21, 1913, he was married to Miss Pearl Shepherd at the home of the
latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Silas Shepherd, living one mile west of
Villisca, and they settle in Villisca where he was living when his accident
occurred. To this union three children
were bon, one child Gerald Grover, died in infancy
and is buried in the Villisca Cemetery, but a daughter, Emma and one son,
Paul , with his wife survive him.
Besides his family he is survived by his parents, three brothers,
Burr, Harvey and Tandy, all of near Iveyville,
and two sister, Miss Jessie, who resides with her parents and Mrs. C. T
Marquis of Marshfield, Missouri. He is
also mourned by a number of cousins and other distant relatives. Mr. Long was a member of the Masonic lodge
and well like by his fellow associates.
Mr.
Long’s condition had received the attention of a great number of physicians
and everything possible was done for his recovery. Various osteopaths, chiropractors, and
others had treated him and on November 7,, 1912 he was taken to Mercy
Hospital in Chicago, where he was operated upon by Dr. J. P. Murray, a work
known physician. He was a the
Mercy hospital for five weeks under the care of excellent physicians and
nurses and after being brought home, was able to site in a chair during the
summer. However a bad cold affected
him the past two weeks and his condition had been so serious that here seemed
to be no hope for his recovery. He had
been kept under the influent of morphine since Monday, in order to be restful
but was fully conscious up to the time of his death. His last words were goodbyes to his wife
and children and Mr. Long himself had made arrangements for the funeral
services, selecting the songs, ministers and other necessities. He felt that it was better for him to dies
as he had done everything possible to recover.
Throughout
his illness he was constantly under the care of the his
wife, with the exception of the one day when he underwent the operation at
Mercy Hospital. She had remained at
his side night and day and no doubt this was a great asset in Mr. Long
remaining alive so long and in a cheerful a condition. He bore this suffering in a remarkable
manner and was always hopeful for regaining his former health. He had the sympathy of the entire city and
many friendly and helpful hands were extended the family by its
citizens. He as under the care of a
trained nurse from Omaha for a time, but Mrs. Long was the only person who
could attend to his wants in a faultless manner and she seldom left him.
The
funeral service will be held from the home this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock,
conducted by Rev W J Ewing of the Villisca Presbyterian church and Rev J. W.
Taylor of the Corning M. E. Church, until recently pastor in Villisca and
friend of Mr. Longs. Mr. Long was not
a member of any church buy believed in the Power about and entrusted himself
to His care before death. Interment
will be in the Villisca cemetery. All
of his relatives are expected to be present, with the exception of his sister
from Marshfield, Missouri, who is unable to come on account of illness. Many Villisca friends, who are mourners are expected to attend.
Donald Shepherd,
69
Donald Shepherd, 69, Red Oak, died Saturday (December 27,
2003) at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Shepherd was cremated and no memorial services are being
planned at this time. Coen-Beaty-Pearson Family
Funeral Service in Corning is in charge of arrangements.
He was born April 29, 1934, to Louis and Leona Marie Kemp
Shepherd. He served in the United
States Army and was a farmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother
Russell Shepherd.
Survivors include his children, Frank Shepherd and his
wife, Nancy of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Raymond Shepherd of Detroit,
Michigan, Josef Shepherd of Clarinda, and Anna Shepherd of Corning; sister
Mary Nelson and her husband Vernon of Lucine,
Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Noah and Abigail Shepherd; friend Betty Wright
of Red Oak; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. James Higgins
Dies at her Home Southwest of City
Funeral services were held at her home two miles
southwest of Villisca Tuesday afternoon form Mrs. James Higgins, 71, who died
there Sunday noon.
The Rev Ernest Buehler of Villisca was in charge of the
final rites and burial was made in the Villisca cemetery, Villisca,
Iowa. Pall bearers were Morris Wendling, Waldo Penton, Roy
Bryson, John Christian, Clyde McFarland, and Elmo Day. Music was furnished by
Mrs. Lester Scott and Mrs. H. H. Nordyke and Mrs.
Avon Wendling and Mrs. Fred Fisher assisted with
the flowers.
Lou (Shepherd) Higgens
Lou E. Shepherd,
daughter of Silas and Emma Shepherd was born near Afton, Iowa, in Union
County, September 28, 1868. She was
one of a family of 12 children and came with her family to Villisca when a
small child. She resided near here
ever since.
She married James Higgins at Villisca December 2, 1886
and to this union four children were born.
They are Mrs. Ona Wagaman
of Creston, Fred Higgins, Mrs. Jessie Wagaman, and
Mrs. Wylma Fisher all of Villisca.
Mr. Higgins preceded her in death on MQ4DH 23, 1939. Mrs. Higgins was confined to her chair with
arthritis for more than ten years.
Following the death of Mr. Higgins six months ago she
continued to live in her own home with the assistance of Miss Letha
Lewis. From the time of her husband’s
death her health began to fail.
She is survived by her four children, 13 grandchildren,
and the following brothers and sisters:
Mrs. George B. Carlisle, Ashland, Oregon; Mrs. Virgil Parcher, Oakland, California; Mrs. Isaac N. Craighead and
Russell Shepherd, Pittsburg, California; Ed Shepherd, California, exact
location not known; and Mrs. Sam Gaskill, Mrs.
Wayne Spargur, and Charles Shepherd all of
Villisca.
Della A Shepherd
Della A Shepherd, daughter of John and Sarah Welch Wagaman, was born in Nebraska, on May 10, 1889, and
passed away November 12, 1983, in San Diego, California, at the age of 94
years.
She was united in marriage to Charles G. Shepherd in
Nodaway, Iowa, on March 24, 1907, and to this union one daughter was born.
Della and her family lived in the Villisca area until the
death of her husband Charles on September 16, 1967, and then she moved to San
Diego, California to make her home near her daughter and family.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, her
husband Charles and two brothers, Austin and Vernon Wagaman.
She is survived by her daughter Hazel Durbin and Husband George,
San Diego, California; one grand daughter Joyce
Johnson and her husband Arland, Spring Valley
California; to great grand daughters Jenene Nelson and Arlene Bobo; Five great great granddaughters Taunya,
Kristin and Cari Lynn Nelson and Melissa and Rachelle
Bobo and one great great
grandson Aaron Nelson; three half sisters; one half brother; one sister in
law, Ethel Wagaman, Creston; also many nieces,
nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 18, in the Sutphen Funeral Home, Villisca, with rev Dennis Neal and
Rev Doug Darnold officiating.
Musical selections of the “Old Rugged Cross” and “How
Great Thou Art” were played by Martin Hentsch.
At the memory book was Mrs. Davis Wagaman. Flower bearers were Dot Kehr
and Mrs. Dallas Larson.
Casket bearers were Orvis Wagaman,
Davis Wagaman, Bob Wagaman,
Gale Fisher, Steve Fisher, and Wayne Geer.
Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery, Villisca,
Iowa. Arrangements were made by Sutphen Funeral Home, Villisca, Iowa.

Charles Shepherd
Funeral services for Charles Gilbert Shepherd were held
on Wednesday, September 20, 1967 at 2:30 pm at the Sutphen
Funeral Home with Rev Alston B. Hall officiating.
Pallbearers included Orvis Wagaman,
Paul Long, Fred Wagaman, Fred Bryson, Bob Wagaman and Donald Fisher. Flower bearers were Mrs. Ralph Arnott, Mrs. Albert Patterson. The music was by Mrs. Quincy Dunn. Selections were “Beyond The Sunset” and “In
the Garden.” Concluding service and
interment was in Villisca Cemetery.
Charles Gilbert Shepherd, son of Silas and Emma Lewis
Shepherd, was born August 27, 1886 on a farm Southwest of Villisca Iowa in
Montgomery County, and passed away at his home in Villisca on Sunday,
September 17, 1967, at the age of 81 years.
He was united in marriage to Della Wagaman
at Nodaway, Iowa on March 24, 1907, and to this union was born one daughter,
Mrs. George (Hazel) Durbin of San Diego, California.
Mr. Shepherd spent his entire life in and around
Villisca, having resided in his present home for thirty-two years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers:
Lon, Walter, ed and Russ, and by six sisters, Nell
Carlisle, Lou Higgins, Myrtle Gaskill, Ella Penwell, Pearl Craighead, and Bertha Parcher.
In Addition to his wife and his daughter Hazel and her
husband George, he is survived by a granddaughter, Joyce Johnson and her
husband Arland of Lemon Grove, California and by
two great grand daughters, Jenene and Arlene
Johnson. He also leaves (cut off)..

Well Known Villiscan Dies at University Hospital at Iowa City
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at his home
for James A. Higgins of Villisca, 72, who died Thursday in University
Hospital at Iowa City. Burial was made
in the Villisca Cemetery.
Mr. Higgins, son of Jacob and Margaret Higgins, was born
at Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio, April 9,
1864. He came to Iowa when 6 years of
age and resided in Montgomery county continuously, except for eighteen years
spent in Page Count and four years in Taylor County.
He was united in marriage to Lou E. Shepherd at Villisca
December 2, 1886, and to this union were born four children, Mrs. Ona Wagaman of Creston, and
Fred Higgins, Jessie Wagaman and Wylma Fisher, all of Villisca. Mrs. Higgins and the children survive.
Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Lum
Higgins of Villisca, 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The body was brought to the Pitman funeral home to away
funeral arrangements.
Pall bearers were Waldo Penton,
Clyde McFarlin, M. E. Wendling,
John Christian, Elmo Day, and Roy Bryson.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Maude Scott and Mrs. Harold Nordyke, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. R. L. Maxey,
Mrs. Avon Wendling and Mrs. Fred Fisher were in
charge of the flowers.

Who Died Wednesday
Funeral services for Wayne Spargur,
53, who died at Wednesday at his home in east Villisca, where held Friday at
2:30 pm in the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev E. M. Buchler.
The music was by Cecil Weaver, accompanied at the organ
by Mrs. Francis Wheeler, and the flower bearers we Mrs. J. T. Oliver and Mrs.
Wesley Van Valkenburg. The pall bearers were Clyde Arbuckle,
Wesley Van Valkenburg, Walter Moody, William
Wright, J. F Joy and Clyde Reynolds, and interment was in the Villisca
Cemetery.
Anderson Wayne Spargur, son of
Alexander and Eliza Spargur was born at Hepburn,
Iowa November 28, 1890, and living in the community all his life. He was married to Ruth Shepherd, March 16,
1919, and they established their home in Villisca.
He served as a member of Villisca’s Company B, Iowa
National Guard, three years, and also served in World War I. He was a member of Ker-A-Vor post number 251 of Villisca, the member of which
accompanied his body from his home to the church for the funeral
service. At the graveside a salute of
three volleys were fired, followed by Taps.
The deceased was engaged in the meat and grocery business
in Villisca for sixteen years. His
death resulted from a heart attack after illness of several years.
Surviving him besides his wife are two sisters, Mrs. Lona Hall of Tampa, Florida, and Mrs. Elva Fry of Omaha,
besides other more distant relatives and friends.
Former Moab resident Wesley Shepherd died
March 18
Wesley DeWayne Shepherd, 81, died March 18, 2007 at Fairbanks Memorial
Hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was born Sept. 10, 1925 to James Eden
Shepherd and Tackla Augusta Eden Shepherd in
Villisca, Iowa.
He
was preceded in death by both parents, his first-born son Wesley De Shepherd
who died in 1947, and one grandson Dirk Bierschied
who died in 1986.
Wesley worked as a miner and semi-truck driver all his adult life. He
loved road trips, crossword puzzles and fishing.
Wesley was a resident of Moab off and on since 1957. He is survived by
three children from his first marriage, Sharon Freeman of Moab, Terrence
Shepherd of Moab and DeWayne (Barb) Shepherd also of Moab. He is also
survived by five children from his second marriage, J.V. (Laura) Shepherd of
Moab, Cole (Tracey) Shepherd of North Pole Alaska, Morgan Shepherd of Port
Aransas Tex., Corry (Crystal) Shepherd of Columbia N.C., Calico (Scott) Hagedorn of Las Vegas, Nev., and one sister, Virginia
Sinclair of Chloride Ariz. He has 24 grandchildren and 17
great-grandchildren.
Wesley requested no services, but he will be greatly missed by those
who loved him and knew him.
James Shepherd of
New Market Dies at Oakdale Sanitarium
James Shepherd, 29, of New Market, died Monday at 8 pm,
at Oakdale Sanitarium where he had been but a few days, his death resulting
from tuberculosis. He was formerly a
resident of Villisca.
He was born May 16, 1902, eleven miles southwest of here
and resided in this community practically all his life. Thirteen years ago, he was married to Tackla Eden at Hepburn and to them two children were born. They are
Wesley Duane, 6 years old, and Virginia Mae, 9. The wife and mother died four years
ago.
Besides his mother, Mrs. Lon Shepherd of New Market, and
his children, Mr. Shepherd leaves also two sisters. They are Mrs. Dolley
Sander of Bonanza, Oregon, and Mrs. Ora Wagaman of Canon City, Colorado.
The body arrived in Villisca Wednesday noon and was taken
to the Fessler & Sutphen
funeral home here the funeral service was held Thursday at 2 pm, conducted by
Rev Martin H Keast.
Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery.
Donald Earlo Shepherd
Carlisle, Arkansas

Donald Earlo Shepherd, a
chemical worker for Dow Chemical 35 years, died Friday at his residence in
Carlisle, Arkansas. He was 78.
The native of Villisca, Iowa, lived in Carlisle four
years was a prior resident of Pittsburg, California for 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion and
first Methodist Church of Carlisle, and a former member of Grace Lutheran
Church, Pittsburg, California, former chairman of the Pittsburg school board
and former manager of the Stoneman Village Senior
Home, Pittsburg, California.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Shepherd of Carlisle;
sons Ronnie Shepherd of New York and Brian Shepherd of Sonoma, California;
daughter Suzanne Powlowski of Oakland, California;
sister Helen Hamm of Washington; and two grandchildren.
Services 10 am Tuesday, Grace Lutheran Church, Pittsburg,
California. Visitation will be from 6
to 8 p.m. today, Pittsburg Funeral Chapel.
Burial will be at Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Concord, California.
Merle Long
Ozark, Missouri
Merle Long, 92, of Ozark, Missouri, formerly of Lenox,
died June 30, 2002 at Ozark Nursing Home, Ozark, Missouri.
Services will be at 10:30 am Friday, July 5, 2002 at St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lenox, Iowa.
The Rev Dan Siepker will officiate. Burial will be in the North Fairview
Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa. There is open
visitation 3 to 8 pm. Thursday, 6:30
pm Christian Wake service and family visitation 7 to 8 pm Thursday at Coen-Beaty-Pearson Family
Funeral Service, 800 N Main street, Lenox, Iowa. Memorials may directed

Mrs. Long, daughter of Cressie
(Simmons) and William Patrick Devereaux, was born
April 27, 1910. She graduated from the
University of Iowa with a degree in education. On Jan 25, 1931, she married Paul Long in
Villisca. They farmed in Lenox for
many years. She taught school in Lenox
and Corning areas for 17 years. She
lived in Lenox until retiring and moving to Mesa, Arizona and later to Nixa,
Missouri.
Survivors include Robert Francis Long of Concord,
California, Carroll Glenn long of Missouri, and William Paul Long of
Chillicothe, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on
September 9, 1990 and son James Lee Long.
Lena Nook
Funeral services for Lena (Shepherd) Nook, age 94, of
Lenox, who died Monday, April 2, 2007, at the Lenox Care Center were held
Wednesday April 4, 2007 at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox. Interment will be at Memory Cemetery in New
Market.
Lena Pauline Stogdill was born
June 5, 1912 near Leroy, Iowa, the daughter of Cyrus Stogdill
and Normanda Stogdill. She attended country school and graduated
from the eighth grade. Lena was united
in marriage to Otho (Short) Shepherd in 1933 and to
this union five sons were born, Wilber, Ronald , J.
D., Gary, and Danny. They settle in
the New Market, Iowa area. In early
1952, they moved to Madison, Missouri where Otho
passed away in October of 1952.
In September of 1956 Lena was united in marriage to
Willie (Bill) Shepherd of Lenox, Iowa.
The family moved to a farm southwest of Lenox where stepchildren,
Donald and Joyce joined the family.
Upon Bill’s death in 1966, she moved to Corning where she worked at
the Rosary Hospital and several area restaurants.
In 1974, Lena moved to Lenox and became a
housekeeper. In 1979, she married
Ernest Nook, expanding the family to include Clifford, Dwight, Glen, Gerald,
Arlene and their families. Upon his
death in 1996, she moved to the Sunrise Apartments, until failing health
caused her to move into Lenox Care Center, where she passed away, April 2,
2007.
Left to cherish Len’s memory is a brother, Verlin, her sons and wives: Wilber, J.D. (Rita), Gary, (Lou), Danny
(Kathy); step-sons and wives Dwight (Shirley), Glen (Shirley), Gerald
(Sandra); Step-daughters Arlene and Joyce, Step-daughters-in-law Twila and Janice; thirty grandchildren; thirty
step-grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; 30 step great grandchildren; six
great great grandchildren; six step great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Preceding Lena in death are her parents, three husbands, Otho, Bill and Ernest; a son Ronald; daughter in law Joan
Shepherd; two step sons Donald Shepherd and Clifford Nook; two step
son-in-laws Kermit Barnes and Jerry Steddom; three
granddaughters Diana Hyatt, Kamby and Dechelle Hogue; three brothers Bert, Arley
and Bernard; a sister-in-law Beda Stogdill; three
brothers in law Wendell Owens, Kenneth Ballinger and Orval
Shepherd, three sisters Opal Owens, Pearl Ballinger and Ruby Shepherd.
Fred R. Shepherd
Fred Richard Shepherd, 95, Prescott, was born in rural
Adam County, Iowa on September 26, 1899 to Jerry and Mary Benjamin
Shepherd. He died at Colonial Manor in
Corning August 29, 1995.
He was married to Mable Johnson October 20, 1926. They farmed in Adams County before moving
to Corning.
Graveside services and burial will be held August 31,
1995 at the Villisca Cemetery in Villisca, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, sons Dale Richard (wife
Janis) Shepherd of Lennox, and Harold Eugene (wife Irene) Shepherd, Prescott;
four grandchildren; three great grandchildren and sister, Mrs. Ed (Esther) Besadecky Shawnee, Kansas.
Memorials may be directed to American Cancer

Louie Bailey
Shepherd
Louie Bailey Shepherd, son of Jerry and Mary Benjamin Shepherd,
was born on a farm in Adams County, Iowa, December 4, 1906 and passed away
December 27, 1977 at Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa after a long illness.
He spent most of his life farming and coal mining in
Nodaway, Guss, and Villisca, Iowa areas., but spent
the past seven years in Carbon, Iowa.
He was united in marriage January 22, 1931 to Leona M.
Kemp of Brooklyn, New York and to this union was born two sons, Donald of Guss, Iowa and Russell who passed away in the 1956, and a
daughter, Mary E. Thompson of Brooks, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Leona, a son Donald, and a
daughter, Mary; one brother Fred Shepherd of Lenox; a sister Mrs. Esther Besadecky of Kansas City, Missouri; five grandsons; five
granddaughters; one great grandsons; many nieces and nephews and a host of
friends.
Funeral services were held at the Sutphen
Funeral Home with Rev James King officiating. Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Neal Gray, accompanied by
Mrs. Quincy Dunn. Flower bearers were
Mrs. and Mrs. Paul Richey. Casket
bearers were George Carmichael, Dale Shepherd, Jim Curtis, Paul Firkins,
Harold Shepherd, and John Armstrong.
