Burton, Michael Ray Burton

Michael Ray Burton was born in Shenandoah, Page County, Iowa to Howard Chase Burton and Mildred Juanita Focht, on May 21, 1947, and passed away January 25, 2010, in Oklahoma City, OK. Michael graduated from Oklahoma City University School of Law. He served in the US Marines in Vietnam from 1967-1969. Michael was an Attorney at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed sailing and restoring old cars. Michael always thought of the good of others before himself. He was known for always helping others and putting others before himself. Michael was preceded in death by his parents Howard Chase Burton and Mildred Juanita Focht. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Mindy; his daughters, Erin and Allison; brothers, Donald Ashenfelter, Ronald, Robert, and David; sisters, Donna Elliott and Darlene Emory; and numerous cousins.

Christensen, Vera May (Yearous)

Vera May Christensen, 91, longtime area resident, died Thursday evening at the Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush, Colorado. Mrs. Christensen was born Jan. 23, 1918, in Clarinda, Iowa, to Isaiah Virgil and Hazel (Kryselmier) Yearous. The family moved to Fort Morgan from Iowa when she was 2 years old. After graduating from high school she attended Barnes Business College.

She married Delmore Leon Christensen on May 16, 1946, in Fort Morgan. They farmed north of Fort Morgan for several years. Mrs. Christensen was a member of the First Christian Church in Fort Morgan, where she was also active with the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was also a master farm homemaker with the Wildcat Creek Extension Club.

She enjoyed sewing and doing crafts. She especially enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with her family. Mrs. Christensen is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Kalous of Brush and Jill Burkey of Greeley; three sons, Mark Christensen, Martin Christensen and Curt Christensen, all of Fort Morgan; her brother, Leonard Yearous of Loveland; her sister, Phyllis Rinker of Boise, Idaho; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ruth Lindell and Gladys Emick; three brothers, Robert Yearous, Kenneth Yearous and Virgil Yearous; her husband; and her son, Jay Christensen.
A funeral service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church, 225 W. Bijou in Fort Morgan. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery in Fort Morgan. Croy, Barbara Jean Maxwell – Croy

Barbara Jean Maxwell-Croy passed into the House of our Lord on Saturday, February 9, 2013. A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA 50266. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Interment will be at Old Memorial [sic, Memory] Cemetery in New Market, IA (near Clarinda). Barbara was born October 27, 1943 to James and Ruby Maxwell of Clarinda, IA. She attended school and graduated from Clarinda High. After graduation, she attended and graduated from the School of Beauty in Des Moines, IA as a licensed beautician. On August 1, 1965 Barbara entered into marriage with David M. Croy of Shenandoah, IA and moved to Topeka, KS where David completed his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. The couple made their home later in Shenandoah where David eventually accepted a position with AVCO Finance. Barbara was always ready to move, as they spent time in Cherokee, IA, Beatrice, NE, Marshall, MO, and Sioux City over the years. David and Barbara then settled on a farm in Waverly, and she loved her animals. The next move was to Muscatine, IA where David was with Central State Bank and Barbara stayed home with their two boys, Chris and John. She loved being a mom. After ten years of being home with her boys, Barbara then joined Martin Luther Home doing occupational therapy and job placement. David and Barbara eventually settled in Urbandale, IA where they have resided for over 30 years. Barbara was a customer service representative with Wells Fargo for 15 years and retired in 2003. Barbara was of the First Christian faith and baptized in Clarinda, IA in the same church she was married. Throughout life, Barbara was a caretaker, concerned for the well being of her family and friends. She never met a stranger. She was admired, respected, and loved by all.

Barbara is survived by her husband, David M. of Urbandale, IA; son, Christopher, his wife Tari, and their daughter Alexis from Johnston, IA. Barbara’s son, John (who is now deceased) was blessed with a daughter, Barbara’s granddaughter Camryn. She so loved her family and cherished being with the granddaughters, Camryn and Alexis. Barbara would also want to mention her best friend forever from school who was so dear to her, Leanna Barnes-Ohnmacht and her husband, Dennis; dear friends, Pat and Lyle Farguhar of Platte City, MO and their son Scott and daughter LeaAnn, John and Kathy Whitehill of Lincoln, NE, Mary and Dan Rude of Ankeny, IA, Linda and Sandra Lautzenhiser, John and Julie Bramble, Lisa and Roger Miller and their three daughters, Gary and Maureen Campin of Clarinda, IA; her sister, Beverly Bramble of Clarinda, IA; her numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and all of her friends; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mike and Marlyn Croy of Camdenton, MO, Janet Croy of Kansas City, MO, and Gloria Croy of Los Altos, CA.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ruby Maxwell; brothers-in-law, Richard Bramble and Roger F. Croy; mother-in-law, Ruby L. Crane; and her so loved son, John James Croy who she missed ever so dearly who left us four years ago. Davison, Charles [1950]

Charles Davison, son of Pleasant and Margaret Jane Davison, was born in Page county, Iowa, August 19, 1862, and died at his home on north 16th in Clarinda, September 6, 1950, at the age of 88 years and 18 days. He spent his entire life in and around Clarinda. He was married to Clara Brooks on December 2, 1884. To this union were born five children: Beulah and Vernon, who died in infancy, Merril E., Wilbur C, and Roy F. all of Clarinda, who survive their father. His wife preceded him in death March 3rd of this year.

He is survived by one brother, Ed Davison, and two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Dow and Mrs. Clara Nelson, all of Clarinda. He also leaves seven grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Charlie Davison was one of the most successful farmers and livestock feeders in this section of the country. In a day when little was known of scientific farming, etc. he, by industrious and energetic work and planning was able to accumulate large land holdings. He excelled as a feeder of livestock and his judgment was sought by many of his friends and acquaintances. Even after he was confined to his home, his mind remained active and relatives and friends sought his counsel.

Funeral service was conducted from the Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm on Friday, September 8, 1950, by Rev. I. E. Stickelman. Organ music was played during the entire service by Altha Hutchings. Casket bearers wer Wendell Davison, Lain Davison, Elman Davison, Richard Davison, Kenneth Davison, and Don Annan. Burial was in the Clarinda cemetery.

Had Been In Hospital Here For Three Weeks

Harry Davison, 66, who died early Sunday morning, January 20, 1946, at the Municipal Hospital, is being buried Tuesday afternoon. The funeral service is at the Walker Funeral Home at 2 o’clock, and Rev. Bentzinger of the Methodist Church is in charge. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Harry is one of the Davison brothers who have been prominent in the local community for years, most of them being large land owners. Ed and Charley Davison are surviving brothers, Mrs. Clara Nelson and Mrs. Jennie Dow, the sisters, all of Clarinda. The original Davison home was in East River township, ownership dating back three quarters of a century or so.

Harry lived with the Hughes on West Garfield Street and was taken to the hospital January 1.

DeVore, Elvin, Jr

Elvin Junior DeVore, 81, of Loveland passed away December 18, 2012. Elvin was born the only boy on June 29, 1931. He was born in a one room clinic with the doctor's wife caring for him. He started life on a ranch near Gillette with his parents and 3 sisters. Later the family added another sister. He loved the ranch with the cattle, this love carried through life, he always had animals wherever he lived.

After his father's death his younger sister and mother moved with him to Tabor, Iowa. During high school he learned the linotype and printing business which proved to benefit his expenses while he went to Asbury College. He graduated with a degree in English, Psychology and Greek. He attended college with a purpose for the ministry, so after graduation he moved to Kansas City to attend Nazarene Seminary. Between sophomore and junior year of college he met and married Evelyn Griffith June 1, 1951. They celebrated 61 years of marriage this year.

While in Kansas City attending seminary he worked at Nazarene Publishing House and Kansas City Star as a linotype operator. While still in Kansas City, he and Evelyn started pastoring a little church at Hamburg, Iowa, going weekends to preach. They were in Hamburg a few years, and then moved to the cold northern town of Algona. They nearly froze, so they moved to a church at Marengo. After a successful ministry there they moved to Clinton, Iowa. Elvin oversaw the building of the church, then after 3 years they were appointed missionaries to Haiti. By this time they had 3 little people to go with them to Haiti. They served there and Barbados for 8 ½ years. Elvin loved Haiti. While there he built the largest church in Port au Prince which withstood the hurricanes. He was also involved with agriculture, haring cows and chickens. He designed a chicken house that would stay cool day and night in that hot climate. When Elvin brought his little family back to the USA, he and Evelyn pastored churches in Colorado for 10 years. He always had small churches and worked on the side. He had a building business called DeVore Homes, building many houses near Loveland. Later, he had a concrete business and he also owned and operated Quad City Crane as his last business. Elvin had to retire because of his eyesight, so he and Evelyn had a farm near Scottsbluff, NE for a few years. The country was always his love with animals. 5 months ago he developed an illness that he struggled with and was a brave warrior.

Elvin leaves his companion of 61 years and 3 children, David of Scottsbluff, Mary of Berthoud, and Ramona (Shaun) of Loveland. We will miss our husband, dad, and encouraging friend and his notorious dry sense of humor.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 21, 2012, 1pm at the Loveland Church of the Nazarene. Visitation will take place from 12-12:45 Friday at the church. Interment at Loveland Burial Park. Memorial contributions can be made to the Loveland Church of the Nazarene in care of Allnutt Funeral Service.

Final Rites Held for Ora Ewart

Services were held Saturday, June 10, for Ora Alonzo Ewart, Lenox at the Lark-Dender Funeral Home. Rev Floyd Newbrough officiated with interment in North Fairview Cemetery.

Ora Alonzo Ewart, son of John C, and Josephine Kemery Ewart, was born October 24, 1899 in Taylor County, Iowa, and passed away June 7, 1978 a the Rosary Hospital in Corning. He was 78 years old.

Ora spent all his life in Taylor County except for a few years in his early youth that were spent in the Odd Fellow Home in Mason City following the death of his mother.

Ora married Stella Me Lantz at Des Moines April 5, 1922. Their four children help them celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in 1972.

The last five years of his life were spent in the Lenox Care Center where he had many friends.

Though Ora’s life was often filled with hardships, his great wit and sense of humor were never lost. He loved life and people, and found beauty in his surroundings where ever they were.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella; his parents; four brothers Oakley, Leslie, Troy, Virgil and a sister Grace.

His is survived by his four children, Albert Ewart, Lenox; Ardith Bowman, Clearfield; Ramona Kleckner, Davenport; and Eldon Ewart, Lenox, one son-in-law; one daughter-in-law; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren, many relatives and friends.

Fulk, Lyle Duncan

Lyle Duncan Fulk, 74, of Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas, died March 9, 1998 at Horseshoe Bend.  He was born March 3, 1924 at Clarinda, Iowa, the son of William and Jennie Elizabeth Duncan Fulk.

He was an elementary school Administrator in Iowa.  He was a member of  Faith Presbyterian Church in Horseshoe Bend, Kiwanis, Boy Scouts, Police Auxiliary, Bowling and Square Dance.

He was married July 22m 1947 to Doris Fern Eden.  She died August 12, 1994.

He is survived by four daughters, Nancy Roach of Fremont, Nebraska, JoAnn Peteson of Stanton, Iowa, Susan Largen of Creighton, Nebraska, Karen Snyder of Omaha, Nebraska;  11 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Kenneth Fulk of Wildomar, California, Marvin Fulk of Clarinda, Iowa; two sisters Wilma Sawyer of North Hills, California, Marilyn Crain, Clarinda, Iowa.

Funeral Services were held March 13 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Clarinda, with the Rev. Mark Wright officiating.  Burial was in Clarinda Cemetery.  Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of services.

Gill, Robert Omar

Robert O. "Bob" Gill, 85, Lawson, Mo., passed away June 23, 2012 at the North Kansas City Hospital.

Bob was born on January 14, 1927 to Vella and Arthur Gill in Siam, Iowa. After graduating from Hopkins High School in Hopkins, Mo. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during W.W.II. Following the war, he attended NWMSC in Maryville, Mo., where he played basketball. After graduating college in 1949, Bob taught Industrial Arts and coached in Stewartsville, Lawson, and Cameron. In 1969 he received his Masters of School Administration from NEMSC in Kirksville, Mo., and subsequently served as Superintendent of Schools in Eagleville, Grant City, and Lawson.

Bob was a member on numerous educational committees including the Missouri State Teachers Association, Missouri Association of School Administrators, and the Board of Regents of NWMSU, where he served as President. He was also elected mayor of Lawson in 1992.

Bob is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Virginia, of the home; four children, Nancy Coss (Cliff) of Lenexa, Kans., Deborah Beydler (Randy) of Springfield, Mo., James Gill (Terri) of Newburgh, Ind., and Cheryl Walker (Brian) of Overland Park, Kans.; nine grandchildren; and one brother, Ed Gill (Lois) of Arlington, Ore.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012 at the Lawson United Methodist Church in Lawson, Mo. Memorial services will be at 1:50 p.m. Friday at the church. A private family inurnment will take place in Hopkins, Mo.

Good, David Wayne
David Wayne Good, 60, of Beatrice, NE, died on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at BryanLGH-West, in Lincoln, NE. He was born on May 7, 1951, in Shenandoah, Iowa. He worked for over 25 years at Martin Luther Home/Mosaic. He enjoyed watching sports, played softball, bowling, fishing, playing pool and his dogs.
He is survived by his sons, Jeff Behrens and wife, Alicia, of Lincoln, Pat Good and wife, Beth, of Beatrice, Tim Good of Beatrice; mother, Anna Nielsen of Shenandoah, Iowa; sisters Janet Woodward and husband, Craig, of Shenandoah, Iowa, Cinda Carlson and husband, Brad, of Shenandoah, Iowa, Lori Pelster of Shenandoah, Iowa; brother, Daniel Good and wife Colleen, of Shenandoah, Iowa; grandkids, Emily Good, Chandler Good, Sebastian Good, Cameron Good; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Lee Good; Peggy Sue Good; and his Doberman dog, Lil.

Herzberg, Helen E. Strom - Helen E. Herzberg, age 85, of Waterloo, died Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born June 4, 1927 in Red Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Victoria Anderson Strom. Helen married Dale G. Herzberg on March 9, 1957 in Bethesda, Iowa.

In her younger years, Helen worked as a cashier at the Safeway Grocery in Clarinda. She and Dale moved to Waterloo in 1957 shortly after their marriage. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo.

Survivors include her husband, Dale of Waterloo; a daughter, Dale Ann (Rick) Christensen of Waterloo and a son, Jim Herzberg of Jesup; 5 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Garden View Chapel Funeral Home, with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation will be held an hour prior to the services on Thursday at the Funeral Home.

Hutt, Ruth E (Tillburg)
Ruth Evangeline Tillburg Hutt went to heaven on Friday, August 10th. She was born June 26, 1925 to Conrad and Priscilla Tillburg in Haxtun, Colorado. She had one sister, Vada. At the age of six months she moved to a farm in Shenandoah, Iowa. She grew up in that area and graduated from high school in Sidney, Iowa.
Ruth married Joe Hutt in August of 1945 after he returned from service in World War II. To this union four sons were born- Larry, Jerry, and Dennis in Iowa, and William in Redding. The family moved from Iowa to Costa Mesa, California in 1957 and from there to Redding in 1962. She worked in several offices and retired from KVIP Christian Radio in 1984. Ruth attended church regularly, accepting Jesus as her Lord and Savior in August of 1966 at North Valley Baptist Church. At the time of her death she was a member at First Baptist of Redding. Her first son, Larry, preceded her in death in 1989. Her husband of over fifty years, Joe, a long time Redding barber, preceded her in death in 1996. She was also preceded by one of her great grandchildren, Kiera Ann Gaub, in 2009.
Ruth is survived by three sons and their wives; Jerry and Nancy, Dennis and Annette, and William and Dina, her daughter-in-law, Betty, wife of Larry, nine grand children, and fifteen great grand children. Her sister, Vada, also survives her. Ruth will be remembered for living a life of simple humility and impeccable character. Ruth was a godly woman whose faith and belief in Jesus Christ reflected in her faithfulness as a wife and her never-ending love as a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She exemplified integrity, honesty, hard work, and loyalty. She is now in heaven rejoicing with the family that was waiting there.
Funeral services will be held at Allen and Dahl's, 21853 Topland Drive, Palo Cedro on Friday, August 17th at 1:00. Memorial donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Redding.

CLOVIS, N.M. - Elsie Pauline Larson, 77, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, in Portales.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Sandia Baptist Church with the Rev. Jason Schwope officiating. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens by Steed-Todd Funeral Home.
Mrs. Larson was born Oct. 19, 1928, to Harley and Pearl Kimpton McCoy in Gus, Iowa. She married James A. Larson on Aug. 28, 1951, in Nebraska City, Neb.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Charles A. Larson of Las Vegas, Nev.; six brothers, Paul McCoy of Red Oak, Iowa, Glenn McCoy of Centralia, Ill., Robert McCoy of Creston, Iowa, Jerry McCoy of Louisville, Colo., Bill McCoy of Northboro, Iowa, and Frank McCoy of Clarinda, Iowa; a sister, Dorothy Scott of Bay Point, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Lewis, Katherine Lee (Johnson)
Services for Katherine Lee Lewis will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Community of Christ RLDS Church in Bonner Springs.
Mrs. Lewis died Aug. 22, 2002, at Select Specialty Hospital of Overland Park. She was 77 years old.
Mrs. Lewis was born April 1, 1925, to Elmer Andrew and Letha Maude Johnson of College Springs, Iowa. She was the ninth of 10 children and graduated from Bedford High School in 1943.
Mrs. Lewis is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Harold A. Lewis; her parents, Elmer and Letha Johnson; two brothers, Samual and Lester Johnson; and three sisters, Zora Orme, Margret McKinley, and Martha Cade.
Survivors include: her four sons, John R. McNelis, Niles, Mich.; Allan J. McNelis, Berryville, Ark.; Stephen P. Lewis, Overland Park; and Rodger C. Lewis, Wellsville; two brothers, Birt Johnson, Skidmore, Mo.; and Delmer Johnson, St. Joseph Mo.,; two sisters, Leona Brown, Clarinda, Iowa, and Ruth Wilson, Council Bluffs, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

McCoy, Annafae "Ann" Sommer - Annafae (Ann) McCoy, 86, of Johnstown, CO passed away at her home Monday, November 23, 2009.

She was born September 14, 1923 in Lancaster, MO to Henry and Edith (Perry) Sommer. She grew up in Davis County Iowa and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1941. She went on to the Thompson School of Cosmetology, became a beautician and co-owned a salon in Clarinda, IA. On December 31, 1945 Ann married Benjamin McCoy in Kansas City, Mo. They moved to Longmont, CO in 1946 and then to Greeley in 1959.

Ann worked in the grocery business, later in the office at Great Western Sugar, then seven years at the Weld County Credit Bureau. In 1965, the family moved to Johnstown where they owned and operated the Johnstown Cleaners and Laundromat. Ann also worked 22 years for Dr. Sprague and then at Hays Market before retiring in 1998. She enjoyed the Senior Groups in Johnstown and Milliken, volunteered some and especially enjoyed visiting family within Colorado, California, and Iowa. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Johnstown and of Eastern Star.

She is survived by three sons, John McCoy and wife Sheryl of Johnstown, Tom McCoy and wife Debbie of Palmdale, CA, and Benny McCoy and wife Donna of Erie, Co; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Benjamin.

Friends may visit from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Adamson Chapel in Greeley or visit Friday, December 4, 2009, 9:30-11 a.m. at the Johnstown United Methodist Church. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 4, 2009 at the United Methodist Church, 108 King Avenue in Johnstown.

McNees, Eleanor Graham

Eleanor Graham McNees passed away on September 29, 2008 in Redding, Calif., at the age of 89. She was born on July 18, 1919 in Robertson, to David and Grace Graham.

She graduated from Mountain View High School in 1937 and started her nurse’s training 1938 at Thomas Dee Memorial Hospital in Ogden, Utah.

The lure of the West Coast and an invitation from her aunt in Ashland, Ore., took her further west. She moved to Redding, Calif. in 1941. In 1944, she met and married John Harold McNees, who had come from Iowa to work on the construction of Shasta Dam, after his service with the U.S. Army during WWII. Together, they raised two daughters, Janice Phelps and Anita Erwin, both of Redding, Calif.

In 1964, Eleanor attended Shasta College and became a licensed vocational nurse. She later returned to the newly established associate’s degree nursing program, and was among the first graduating classes of registered nurses in 1968. She was the valedictorian speaker of the 1968 class.

A very creative and musical person, Eleanor was church organist and choir member for many years at various churches. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling in her motor home with her German Shepard.

Eleanor also leaves five grandchildren, Tami and John Phelps, Kimber, Rickey, Ryan and Julie Erwin, and three great grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Murray (Glenn) of Caldwell, Idaho; Alice Walker of Lyman, and brother Dale Graham of Robertson.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jay and Ralph Graham, and her husband, Harold, who was killed in a trucking accident in 1968.

Mrs. Clara (Davison) Nelson, 90, died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital at 5:40 pm Friday, 9 days after having been accidentally burned when her clothing caught fire from her stove at home.

Mrs. Nelson had been able to live by herself in spite of her advanced age, and was preparing her breakfast when her clothing caught fire.  She managed to remove the burning clothing and put it in the kitchen sink and turn water on it to put out the blaze, and then managed to use her dial telephone to summon help.  An areas of about 70 percent of her body was burned, and about 40 percent of it was third degree burns.

Mrs. Nelson was the daughter of the late Pleasant and Margaret Jane Davison.  She was born on a farm near Clarinda, and had lived there her entire lifetime.  She was married to Elmer Nelson, who preceded her in death in 1942.  She is survived by three children, Charles and Ed Nelson of Clarinda, and Mrs. Margaret Wheat of West Palm Beach, Florida.

Funeral services were conducted from the Walker Funeral Home this Monday afternoon with Rev. D. C. Davis in charge.  Organ music was by Aletha L. Hutchings.  Casket bearers were James N. Millhone, Ferrll Reed, Allen Reed, Dan Nelson, Dick Nelson, and Bill Nelson.

Burial was beside her husband in the Clarinda Cemetery.
