Herbert Fredrick Sump

Herbert Fredrick sump was born March 17, 1911 on the family farm Northeast of Clarinda to John Merriman and Cary Caroline (Rurode) Sump.  Herbert passed away Monday, December 24, 2007 at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda at the age of 96.

Herbert attended Center Country School in Nodaway township and graduated from Immanuel Lutheran School.  He was married to Clara Herzberg September 6, 1933 at Immanuel Luther Church.  The couple had seven children:  Clythia, Audrey, Leonard, Ron, Joyce, Doris and Morris.  He was baptized, confirmed, married and buries at Immanuel.  The couple transferred to St. John Lutheran Church in Clarinda where they are faithful members. 

Herbert worked all his life on the farms where he was born.  Besides farming he enjoyed hunting and fishing and driving through the countryside looking at the crops.  Herbert and Clara lived on the farm until the moved to Clarinda in 2002.  In the summer of 2006 Herbert and Clara moved to the Goldenrod Manor from their home in Clarinda.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Audrey at two and one-half months of age; parents, granddaughter, Patricia Sump, son-in-law Lee brown, son Leonard sump and his wife Marie; brother Eldor Sump and wife Anna, Sister Ethel Wichman and husband William and sister Mabel Sunderman and husband Marvil.

Herbert is survived by his wife of 74 years, Clara of Clarinda;  children:  Clythia Brown, Ron Sump and wife Barbara of Clarinda, Joyce Johnson and husband Dick of Clarinda, Doris Prouty of Louisville, Kentucky, Morris Sump and wife Shirley of New Market, Iowa; brother Wayne Sump and wife Elnora of Clarinda; eighteen grandchildren twenty-four great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 29, 2007 at St. John Lutheran Church with Rev. Jerome Wagoner officiating.  Interment was at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Clarinda.  Memorials are suggest the St. John elevator fund.  Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

 

 

Mrs. Avis Squier death was Sunday

Shambaugh (Special) – Mrs. Avis Squier, 74, a resident here until moving to her daughter’s home in Villisca several years ago, died unexpectedly Sunday at 3 p.m.

She had been living with her daughter’s family Col and Mrs. Ed Reynolds in Villisca, since her husband died 15 years ago.

Born in Page County the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C A Hamm of Shambaugh, Mrs. Squier had lived all of her life in Iowa.  Her husband, Herbert Ellsworth Squier died several years ago.

She is survived by her daughter Dorothy Reynolds of Villisca and two sons, Don of Shambaugh, and Herbert of Oswego, Illinois; two grandchildren Steve and Dale Squier of Illinois, two sisters, (Audrey) Phipps of Shambaugh and Mrs. Charles (Iva) Gibson of Council Bluffs; two brothers Ralph Hamm of Bedford and Herbert Hamm of Clarinda.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Walker Funeral Home at 2 PM Wednesday with the Rev I E Stickelman in charge.  Organ music will be furnished by Grace Perry.  Flower committee with be Eunice Moore, Merle Joy, and Mable Grace Sidwell.  Casket Bearers will be Roscoe Moore, Charles Gibson, Raymond Johnson, Leland Bunting, William Knizely, and Lee Woodruff.  Burial will be in the Butler Cemetery near Shambaugh.

 

Ellsworth N Squier

Ellsworth N Squier, Son of Jasper and Harriett Squier, was born in eastern Page county, Iowa, September 21, 1882.  After completing his education, he taught school four years in Taylor county and then enter the telephone business.  He continued in that business and was employed as a manger for the Central Iowa Telephone company at the time he was taken ill several moths ago.

On March 19, 1910 he was married to Avis E. Hamm, and to this marriage were born three children, Dorothy, Donald and Herbert.

Mr. Squier was a member of the Presbyterian church , the O E S and the Masonic lodge at Buffalo Center, Iowa where he served as worshipful master during 1946.  He was also a member of the Royal Arch Masons of Clarinda.

He is survived by his wife, three children, Mrs. Edward Reynolds of Villisca, Donald of Shambaugh, and Herbert of Aurora, Illinois, also a half brother, James Sal yards of Gravity and a brother, A.J Squier of Clarinda.

He died at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Reynolds, in Villisca on December 8.  Funeral services were Jan 10 at the Pitman funeral home, conducted by Rev  M A Robeson.

The singing was by Mrs. Neal Gray, Mrs. Hj Christie, Mrs. Marvin Dougherty, and Mrs. Robert Phillips, accompanied by Mrs. J L Wheeler, and assisting with the flowers were Mrs. Elmer Belding and Miss Maxine Reynolds.  The paullbearers were Frank Pierson, Tim Erickson, H C Lindell, Riley T Dodson, Bruce Moody, and Elias Lewis, and interment was in the Butler Cemetery near Shambaugh.  Tim Ericson conducted Masonic rites at the grave.

 

William Dalrymple

William Winslow, son of Winslow and Louisa Dalrymple, was born August 26, 1877, at Clarinda.  He passed away Saturday, November 20, 1948, at his home in Clarinda at the age of 71 years, two months and 25 days.  He had been in failing health for over two years.

Mr. Dalrymple had lived in Clarinda all his life, with the exception of several years spent in the West.

Oct October 3rd, 1929, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Mabel Good at New Market, who survives him.  He is also survived by his step-son and wife, Mr.. and Mrs. Beryl Good, of Painesville, Ohio.

Mr Dalrymple also leaves to mourn his passing:  his sister, Mrs. Dollies Woodruff of Clarinda, and three nieces, Mrs. Wilma Johnson of Weaverville, California; Mrs. Edna Barrett and Mrs. Irene Wright, both of Clarinda.  There are many other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was Tuesday, November 23, at 2:00 pm in Walker’s funeral home, with burial in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Rev W. W. Bentzinger, pastor of the First Methodist Church, was in charge.  Miss Althera Hutching and Mrs. Doris Forbes furnished the music.

 

Wendell Forest Maxwell

 

Wendell Forest Maxwell, son of Ellis Dorsey and Lepha Forrest (Hamm) Maxwell, was born May 16, 1936 in Braddyville, Iowa.  He passed away on Thursday afternoon at his home in Clarinda, following an extended illness.  His early years were spent got to Center School and help his parents and his aunts on the farm.  He also help his neighbors when he could.  Also during his early years, Wendell worked in Mr. Pleasant and Fort Dodge.  On August 11, 1937, Wendell married Rosanna Marie Surrell in Clarinda, Iowa.  After his marriage he work for thee of the Seed Nursery’s in Shenandoah for many years.  He also worked in a Glenwood care facility for five years and D & L for a year.  After his retirement, Wendell drove a school bus for the Nishna Valley School District.  Wendell always had a garden and he was a Red Oak Farmers Market Vendor, selling the produce he grew. 

 

He was preceded in death by parents, Ellis and Lepha Maxwell; three brothers, Harold and Florence Maxwell, Lowell Maxwell, and Darwin Maxwell; sister Lorena and Charley Wehrkamp; and two grandchildren, Danual Eddie Fidler and Mari ReAnn Harper.

 

Wendell is survived by his wife Rosanna of Clarinda, children, Anna Marie Miller and her husband Billie of Clinton, Missouri, Lepha Lucille Fidler and her husband, Bill of Hawleyville, Iowa, Timothy Wendell Maxwell of Creston, Iowa, Mary Ella Adams and her husband Orvall of Orient, Iowa, Debbie Jean Wheeler and her husband Kevin of Clarinda, Iowa, Joseph Eric Maxwell and his wife Sarah of Creston Iowa,  Toni Lynn Eberly and her husband Tim of Clarinda, Iowa; 32 grandchildren,; 10 Great grandchildren; brothers-in-law Harold Surrell and his wife Marie of Corning, Iowa and Dick Sebeniecher and his wife Janice of Glue Grass, Iowa; along with many nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.

 

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at the Church of God, Shenandoah, with Marcia Gilbert Campbell and Billie Miller officiating.  Pallbearers were grand children with great grandchildren as honoraries.  Burial was at Shearer Cemetery, Braddyville, Iowa.  Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements..

 

Jesse Hamm, 89, Dies hat Home of Daughter Sunday

Shambaugh (Special) - Jesse Hamm, 89 year old Page county pioneer died at his home in Shambaugh Sunday afternoon after an illness of several months.

He had been a prominent farmer here for 75 years until recent illness forced him to retire.  In recent years he made his home with a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Virginia Hamm of Shambaugh  He was a member of the Church of God.

He is survived by two sons and two daughters, Paul and Arch of Tucson, Arizona, Mrs. M. E Davison of Clarinda,  and Mrs. Grace Thomas near Shambaugh.  Two brothers, Jacob of Shambaugh and Dove of Bedford and one sister, Mrs. Belle Woodruff of Arizona, also survives.  Two children preceded him in death.  On Grandson, Dean Beery, who he raised lives near Burlington Junction, Missouri.

Services will be held Wednesday afternoon, 2:30 pm at the Church of God in Shambaugh.  Reverend Marston will be in charge of the services.

 

Mrs. J Hamm Rites Friday Afternoon

Shambaugh (Special) -Mrs. Jess Hamm, aged 81 died unexpectedly at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning.  She had been in failing health for some time, but recently had been better.  Relatives had gone to her room Tuesday about midnight and she seemed all right, but when they went the second time, found that she had passed away.

She is survived by her husband and four children, Mrs. Grace Thomas, Paul Hamm, and Mrs. Golda Davison, all of Shambaugh, and Arch Hamm of Braddyville.  Two children, Wilma and Dale preceded her in death some time ago.

Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Church of God in Shambaugh with Reverend Fessler in charge.  Burial will be in the Butler Cemetery.

 

Mrs. Neil Hamm

Jennie Marie Hamm, the sixth child of Mrs. and Mrs. John Bennett, was born in Greenville, Tennessee, on March 31, 1913.  When she was about four years of age, her parents moved to Page County, where Jennie grew to young womanhood.  It was her misfortune to have had her father, mother, two brothers and three sisters precede her in death.

On October 29, 1927 she was united in holy matrimony to Neil Hamm of Clarinda, and God manifested his blessings by sending eight children to bless their home.

After the birth of their last child on July 9, of last year, Mrs. Hamm’s health began to fail rapidly so that on December 30 she had to be taken to the Immanuel hospital in Omaha, Nebraska for medical care where she was confined to her bed until her untimely death.

Her husband was with her on May 2, 1945 when God called her home at the age of 32 years, 1 month and 2 days.  Besides her husband, Neil, she leaves to mourn her passing her children:  Mary Louise, Thelma Mae, Shirley Edith, Ruth Elizabeth, Ronald Ray, David Lee, Norman Gene, and Phyllis Ann; a brother Robert Bennett of Clarinda, an aunt Mrs. Tilda Ann Whitehead of New Market; and her many friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Walker Funeral Home by Rev Violet Hartzer on May 5, 1945.  Rev Roger Hartzer, accompanied by Mrs. Sherman Gay, furnished the music.  Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

 

 

Paul A. Hamm

Paul A. Hamm, son of Jesse S and Hulda J Hamm, was born on a farm in East River township, Page County, Iowa, on January 2, 1882 and died at Tucson, Arizona, on September 6, 1947, at the age of 65 years, 5 months, and 4 days.  He had been failing in health for three years and had gone to Arizona to try to regain his strength.

The early years of his life were spent on the farm, and he found great joy in tilling the soil and caring for his livestock.  On February 4, 1904, he was united in marriage to Miss Bess King of Norwich, Iowa.  Two children were born to this union:  Ward W. Hamm of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Mrs. Lavaun Mowery of Los Angeles, California.  Paul Hamm took an interest in all rural activities and improvement projects and every community need found a ready response from him.

In early life he united with the Church of God in Shambaugh.

On December 6, 1930, Paul was united in marriage to Miss Erma Booth of Creston, Iowa.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Erma Hamm of Tucson, Arizona, the son and daughter, a brother, Arch Hamm of Shambaugh, two sisters, Grace Thomas of Shambaugh, and Golda Davison of Clarinda, three grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Shambaugh Church of God Tuesday, September 9, with the Rev Arthur C Marston in charge.  Music was furnished by Horace Richardson, vocalist, and Mrs. Fern Miller, pianist.  Pallbearers were Ed Calhoon, Harve Miller, Orville, Thompson, Harve brown, Bill McClelland and Loraine Hughes.  Interment was made in the Clarinda Cemetery.

 

Jacob Hamm

Jacob Hamm, oldest son of Christian and Elizabeth Hamm was born in Davis County, Dec 26, 1952, and died at his home, in Shambaugh, January 22, 1952, at the age of 99 years and 27 days.

His early life was spent near Troy, Iowa and at the age of 11, he traveled with his family by covered wagon and on foot from Davis County, to Page county, taking three weeks.  He spend the rest of this childhood on a farm east of Shambaugh.

January 1, 1874 her married Mary Beery and continued to farm in Buchanan township east of Shambaugh.  Five daughters were born to this union.  When Mrs. Hamm died, Dec 2, 1887, he moved to Shambaugh with his mother and together they took care of the girls.  The twin girls died shortly after.  He married Estella Markle, November 24, 1887, and they moved back to the farm where they lived until 1907.  During this time he operated a general store, and continued farming as a sideline.

In 1907, they moved to Shambaugh were he spent the remainder of his life.  They took into their home to raise, Mrs. Hamm's nephew, Walter Huff.

Mrs. Hamm's philosophy of life was “every man to cared for and provide for the members of his own family” and in carrying out that philosophy he fare exceeded the call of duty.  He gave his children a living example of honest, industry, puriety, and unselfishness.

He was also a member of the Methodist church.

He is survived by his wife, Estella; three daughter, Mrs. E. B. Calhoon and Mrs. Clair Perry both of Shambaugh, and Mrs. Anna Farnsworth of Westboro, Missouri, the nephew, Walter Huff of Maryville, Missouri, one sister, Mrs. Bell Woodruff of Ardmore, Oklahoma, one brother, C. A. Hamm of Bedford, 13 grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Church of God in Shambaugh, January 25, with Reverend Wannieta McConnell officiating.  Burial was in the Butler Cemetery near Shambaugh.

 

Services Wednesday for Mrs. E Hamm

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 2 pm for Mrs. Ervin (Mary V) Hamm, 80 who died at 8:20 pm Saturday at the Gillespie Nursing Home.  Mrs. Hamm had been ill for several months.

The family came to Clarinda 43 years ago and had their home at 322 E Chestnut Street for many years.  Mrs. Hamm was a member of the Methodist Church, WSCS and King’s daughters.

Mrs. Hamm and their three children, Nola Hamm of La Grange Park, Illinois, Mrs. Robert (June) Crook of Atlantic, Iowa and Maurice Hamm of Houston, Texas survive; also five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Daughter of the late John A Harper and Lillie Hay Harper, Mrs. Hamm was born at Blanchard.  Surviving sisters are Mrs. Phoebe Clayton of Clarinda, Mrs. Vera Fuller of Burlington Junction, Missouri, Mrs. Paul (Ina) Jones of Hyattsville, Maryland, Mars. Nita Dowd of Milwaukee, Wisconson, and Mars. Orie (Beulah) Gorrell of Clarinda.  John Harper of Richland, Washington is a brother.

The Rev John L Beebout will conduct the service with Margaret Grossman serving as organist.  Burial will be at the Clarinda Cemetery.

Nola Lucile Hamm

Nola Lucile Hamm, age 96, of La Porte, Texas died April 27, 2005 in Houston, Texas.  Nola was born September 8, 1908 in East River Township, Iowa to Ervin and Mary (Harper) Hamm.  Miss Hamm was a kindergarten and first grade teacher as well as a reading specialist in Chicago.  She is survived by her brother, Maurice E Hamm and sister-in-law Mary Lee Hamm, both of La Porte, Texas; nieces and many cousins.  Graveside services will be held 10:00 am, Friday, May 27, 2005 at the Clarinda Cemetery with Rev John Clark officiating.  Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Ervin Hamm was a longtime resident

Monday May 27, 1974

Ervin Hamm, 90, longtime Clarinda resident, died Sunday morning at West Heights Manor where he had been for the past three years. 

He was born July 31, 1883, in Page County, the son of William and Abligale Davis Hamm.  He was married to Mary Harper, who died in 1967.  Mr. Hamm was a retired carpenter for the Burlington Railroad and later worked for Nelson’s Market here in Clarinda.

He is survived by three children:  Nola Hamm of La Grange, Illinois, Mrs. Robert (June) Crook of Atlantic, Iowa, and Maurice Hamm of La Porte, Texas.  There are five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.  Mrs. Jim Hamm is a sister-in-law.  He was preceded in death by a son, Harry, in 1923.

Services for Mr. Hamm were held this Tuesday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home with Rev Cecil Latta officiating.  Grace Perry was the organist.  Casket bearers were Arlo Hamm, George Hamm, Robert Hamm, Ciifford Hamm, Fiddle Miller and Paul McComb.  Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery..

Hamm Rites Set Monday

Funeral services have been scheduled for Leonard B. Hamm, 58, local carpenter who died Thursday at work.

Rites will be held at the Mullins-Hamilton chapel with the Reverend Tommy Crider conducting, and burial to follow in Monte Vista Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be C. B. Sheets, J. C. Walcott, Bud Ridley, H. G. O’Dell, Albert Sandoval and Thurman Dunn.

Friends may call from 2 until 4 and from 7 until 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until services Monday.

Survivors include his widow Mrs. Opal Hamm of the family home at 919 Florida Avenue; two daughters Mrs. H. A. Malmstrom of St. Louis, Missouri and Mrs. C. L. Rohm of Davenport, Iowa, seven grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Ethel Thompson of Sonoma, California; and a brother, Harold Hamm of Washington.

F. H. Woodruff

Is Dead at 74

Fred Herman Woodruff, 74, died yesterday morning at a St. Joseph hospital.  He was a retired car repairman for the Burlington railroad. 

Mr. Woodruff was born in Page County, Iowa.  He had lived here since 1922.  The family home is on rural route No. 4.  He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Flossie J. Woodruff, of the home; four sons, Gerald Woodruff, Merrill Woodruff, and Clark Woodruff all of St. Joseph; and Ross Woodruff of St. Louis; a daughter, Doris Crabtree of St. Joseph; ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Heaton-Bowman chapel with Dr. B. V. Powell officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Woodruff Services

Services for Mrs. Flossie J. Woodruff will be Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the Heaton-Bowman chapel.  The Rev. Louis Schowengerdt will officiate and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Woodruff, 74, widow of Fred H. Woodruff, died at her home, 2701 Garfield Avenue, yesterday afternoon.  A native of Page County, Iowa, she had lived in St. Joseph 38 years.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Doris Crabtree, St. Joseph; three sons, Ross W. Woodruff, St. Louis, Gerald N. and Clark S. Woodruff, St. Joseph; a brother, Harley Hamm; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Woodruff was a member of the Methodist Church.

 

Helen M. Hamm

Helen M. Hamm, 74 of Clarinda, died Monday, November 27, 1995, at Clarinda Municipal Hospital after a lengthy illness.

She was born May 1, 1921, at Shenandoah, the daughter of Jacob and Grace Nelson Duran.  On August 6, 1939, she married Arlo Hamm, who survives.

Hamm had worked at Fitch’s Store and was later a dental assistant for Dr. H. P. Bradrick.

She is survived by her husband, Arlo, of the home, daughters Connie and Guy Clark, Des Moines; Beverly and Paul Swanson, Clarinda; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Also surviving are sister Ann Cleveland, Mequin, Wisconsin; and brother Keith Anderson, Moline, Illinois.

Hamm was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Jolene; sisters Frances Suderman and Betty McCurdy; brothers Richard Duran, Lloyd Duran and Kenneth Anderson.

Funeral services will be Friday, December 1 at 1:30 pm at the Walker-Merrick Funeral home, Clarinda, with Rev Dennis Bradley officiating.

 

Services for Mrs. Edith Hamm

Mrs. Edith Hamm, 82, passed away at the Clarinda Rest Home at 3 AM Tuesday following a series of strokes she had suffered the past few months.  She had been able to keep her apartment at the home of Mrs. Ethel McKinnon until the past week when she was ten to the rest home.

The former Edith Adele Good, she was daughter of the late Levi W. and Harriett Ellen McKinnon Good, born Feb 5, 1883, near Clarinda, living her entire life here.     

She was married to Vernie C Hamm Feb 7, 1900 and to this union one daughter, Vona and two sons, Leroy and Neil were born.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her three children, parents, one sister, Mrs. Clarence (Effie) Guenther and a brother Arthur.

Survivors are her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Neil Hamm; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; a brother Bert Good of Norfolk, Nebraska; and sisters Mrs. Glenn (Netha) Davison and Mrs. Al (Verla) Heil of Clarinda; Mrs. Dale (Lucille) Combs of New Market, Mars. Milton (Mildred) Swanson of Lyman; brothers, Uril good of Braddyville, Max Good of Newton, and Eldon Good of Charleston, South Carolina.

She was a member of the Church of Nazarene and attended regularly until her recent illness. 

Funeral arrangements are being arranged for Friday afternoon a the Walker Funeral home at 2 pm with Reverend Clem Reyes officiating; burial will be beside her husband in the Clarinda Cemetery.

 

Vernon C Hamm

Vernon C Hamm, son of David and Mary E. Hamm, was born Nov 23, 1875 in Page county, Iowa, and passed away September 29, 1942 at the age of 66 years, 10 months, and 6 days.  His boyhood days were mostly spent in Page county.

In the year 1909 he was united in marriage to Edith A Good, and two this union three children were born:  one daughter, Vona, and two sons, Leroy and Neil, all of Clarinda.

He leaves to mourn their loss, besides his wife and children, he mother Mary E. Hamm of Clarinda; a brother, Harley, of Clarinda; two sisters, Orpha Rhodes of Kansas, and Flossie Woodruff of St. Joseph, MO; seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, besides other relatives and friends.

When a young man, he was concerted and joined the Church of God of Shambaugh.  After moving to Clarinda, he had his membership changed to the United Brethren Church, where he has been an active member until his death.

He was a kind and loving husband and father to his wife and children, and was loved by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, Oct 2 at the Walker Funeral Home, Rev. F. P. Pruitt being in change, assisted by Rev, A L Harper.  Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

 

Ward W. Hamm

Ward W. Hamm, 98, Ashtabula, Ohio, died February 15, 1995.  He was born March 18, 1905, in Shambaugh, the son of Paul and Bess (Ferris) Hamm.

An Ashtabula resident since 1925, he was music teacher and band director for Ashtabula Area City School, retiring in 1968.

He graduated from Patrick-Conway Band School in Ithica, New York, and earned his master’s degree from Sherwood Music School in Chicago.  He taught 33 years in Ashtabula in the elementary, junior high, and senior high.  Prior to that, he taught six years in Athens County Schools.

Hamm was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Ashtabula Area Education Association, Ohio Education association, National Education Association, Rotary club, and Ohio Music Education Association.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Eaton Hamm, whom he married March 23, 1981; a daughter, Sandra Jean Eller, Newton, Maine; a step-son Robert L Eaton, Ashtabula; step-daughter Cathy Hutcheson, Atlanta, Georgia; tree grandchildren and one great grandson.

He was preceded by his first wife, Margery E. Hamm in 1967; a sister, Lavaun Mowrey in 1933; and his parents.  Services and burial was in Ashtabula

 

Irmal Grace Hamm

Irmal Grace Hamm, 79, of Decatur, died Tuesday December 10 at her residence.  Services were held Friday, December 13 at the Graceland/ Fairlawn Chapel. Interment is in Graceland Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Hamm was born in Clarinda on September 28, 1917, the daughter of Henry and Bertha Hascall Higgins.  She married Ermal H. Hamm in Clarinda on February 17, 1950. 

She was a member of Women of the Moose, and the Illinois Congress of PTA.  She retired from the William Harris School.

Mrs. Hamm is survived her husband, Ermal, of Decatur; three sons, Russell of Biloxi, Mississippi, Mike of Decatur, Edwin of Aurora, two daughters Mary Thatcher, Campbell, California and Patti Merrill, Lakewood, Colorado, one sister Alma Harrell, Clarinda, 18 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, two brothers, and one daughter.

 

Arch Hamm, 85

 

Shambaugh, Services for Arch Hamm, 85, will be Tuesday following his death last Thursday in LaHambra, California.

He and his wife were making their annual winter visit with their daughter, Mrs. Carroll True and Rev True in Lahambra at the time of his death.

Mr. Hamm was a native of the Shambaugh – Braddyville areas, farming most of his life near Braddyville until retiring several years ago to live in Shambaugh.  They had visited in California each winter since then., returning to their home during the summer.  He was an active worker in the Shambaugh Church of God.

Last summer, he suffered a stroke here, but was able to be flown to his daughter’s for the winter.

He was born June 5, 1885, at Shambaugh, the son of Jesse S and Hulda Jane Brown Hamm.  On February 22, 1923 he was married to Emma Belle Ossman at Panora.  Mr. Hamm was a farmer and attended the Church of God at Shambaugh.

He is survived by his wife, and daughter, Mrs. C L (Neva) True of LaHambra California, three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Merrill (Golda) Davison of Clarinda.

Funeral services well be at 2 pm Tuesday at the Church of God at Shambaugh with Rev Ray Draper, assisted by Rev Arthur C Marston of Glenwood Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Melvin Cabbage, Water Geer, Charley Geer, Leo Miller, Loraine Hughes, and Lester Walker.

Mrs. Betty Bix will be the soloist and Mrs. Herman Linke pianist.  C. True will be the violinist.  Flower bearers will be Mrs. Nora Clement, Mrs. Pauline Cabbage, Mrs. Doris Miller and Mrs. Elma Geer.  Mrs. Roy Ropp will be at the register stand.  Usher will be Carmen Clement and Leland Bunting.

The body will lie in state at the funeral home until the time of the service.

 

 

DECATUR - Michael A. Hamm, 55 of Decatur, passed away at 6:00 am Thursday, November 6, 2008 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

 

Services to celebrate Michael’s life will be held at 11 am Saturday, November 8, 2008 in the Chapel of Graceland/

Michael was born on November 10, 1952 in Clarinda, IA, a son of Ermal H. and Irmal G. (Higgins) Hamm. He graduated from Lakeview High School. Michael worked for D.M. Mattson Technologies Inc, for the past few years, and he was a member of the Local I.B.E.W. #146. He was an avid sportsman who loved pheasant hunting and fishing. Michael married Susan Paddock on July 12, 1975 in Decatur.

 

Surviving are his wife of over 33 years Susan of Decatur, sons: Joseph A. Hamm and his wife Angela and Steven L. Hamm both of Decatur, brothers: Edwin Hamm and wife Kathy and Russell Hamm and wife Suke both of Colorado, sisters: Patty Merrill and husband Richard of Colorado and Mary Ann Thatcher of Virginia, and two grandchildren Levi J. and Macey of Decatur.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

David Hamm

 

David Hamm was born July 24, 1855 in Davis County, Iowa, and passed from this life at New Market, Iowa, June 8, 1936.

 

He was united in marriage to Edith Butler, December 1, 1874.  He is survived by his wife and four children, Vernon Hamm, Clarinda; Orpha Hamm, Burlington Junction; Flossie Woodruff, St. Joseph, Missouri; and Harley Hamm, Hopkins, Missouri.  He also leaves two daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, four brothers, and two sisters.

 

He united with the Church of God in the year 1874 and lived his remaining life a faithful Christian.  Mr. Ham was a kind and loving father and a devoted husband, and will be greatly missed in the home.

 

Funeral services were conducted at the Church of God in Shambaugh by pastor, Rev. T. Fessler, on Wednesday, June 10 at 3:30.  Six grandsons of Mr. Hamm acted as pall bearers.  Mrs. Grace Ropp, Mrs. Grace Camp, Mrs. Elma Greer and Mars Elva Moger sang the following hymns:  “The Eastern Gate,” Going down the Valley,” Where the Gates Swing Outward Never,” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”  A large crowd attended the services and he was laid to rest in the Butler Cemetery south of Shambaugh.

 

Mary E. Hamm

 

Mary E. Butler (Hamm), the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H Butler, was born in Page county, Iowa, May 24, 1861, and passed from this life at Clarinda, Iowa, December 17, 1942, being 81 years, 6 months, and 16 days of age.

 

She was united in marriage to David Hamm, December 1, 1874.  To this union were born four children, three surviving. namely Mrs. Orpha Rhodes of Marysville, Kansas; Mrs. Flossie Woodruff of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Harley Hamm of Clarinda, Iowa.  Vernie preceded his mother, but a few months ago, and her husband seven years ago.

 

She also leave two daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 5 sisters, and 1 brother.

 

She accepted Christ as her Savior and united with the Church of God in the year 1874.  She lived faithful to her Christ and church until the end.

 

Mrs. Hamm was a kind and living mother, a kind and helpful neighbor, and will be greatly missed both in the home and community.  She is gone, but not forgotten.

 

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, December 20 and burial was in the Butler Cemetery.

 

G Guenther rites to be held Tuesday

 

Glenn E Guenther, son of the late Allie and Annie Guenther, was born near Shambaugh, on July 13, 1907 and departed this life at the age of 57 years at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital on Friday evening. 

Glenn spent his boyhood with his parents on the farm in Page County, attending Page County Schools and being graduated from the Clarinda High School.  He has been able to pursue his farming interests until his health failed.  During his severe Illness he has been in Clarinda, and Iowa City hospitals.

 

On October 12, 1944, he was married to Clara Carkhuff how survived him.  They have three children:  Glenn Junior, Sheila Dianne, and Edward Lynn all at home.  His mother, Mrs. Ann Guenther is of Clarinda, two sisters Gladys (Mrs. Ralph Bordon), and Dorothy (Mrs. Milton Cooper) of Clarinda, and a brother, Harold Guenther of Bedford.  One niece is Mrs. Deloris Evans of Clarinda and two nephews, John E Guenther of Jefferson, and Gregg Guenther of Kansas City, Missouri.

 

 

Judy Glasgow

 

Judy A Glasgow, 62, of Sidney, died Thursday, August 11, 2005 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center following an extended Illness.

 

Judy was born July 12, 1943 in Clarinda to George E Hamm and Lula Rosella (Spangler) Hamm. 

 

On January 26, 1963 she was married to Walter (Bud) Glasgow in College Springs.

 

Judy worked as a hair stylist in Sidney and drove a school bus for the Sidney Community Schools for many years.

 

Judy was a member of the United Methodist Church in College Springs, and a friend of the Presbyterian Church in Sidney.

 

Judy was preceded in death by her mother Rozella Hamm and her husband, Walter (Bud) Glasgow.

 

She is survived by her father, George Hamm of Iowa City, two daughters, Lori Sturm and husband Tony of Elkhorn, Nebraska, and Candy Norris and husband Brett of Coralville, Iowa, three grandchildren, Ron Bowers of Coralville, Travis and Kyndra Sturm of Elkhorn, Nancy Martin of Iowa City, two brothers, Carl Hamm of Campbell, Nebraska, and Merlin Hamm of Davenport. Two sisters-in-law Shirley Falk of Shenandoah, and Peg Hayter and husband Bill of Corning, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and friends. 

 

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney, with Rev. Faye Fedlam of the Sidney United Presbyterian Church officiating. 

 

Visitation with the family will be open after 5 p.m. Sunday at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney.

 

Memorials will go to the Sidney Rescue Squad and interment will be in the Sidney Cemetery.

Clem A Gates

 

Braddyville (Special) – Death came unexpectedly to Clem A. Gates, 102), at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ace (Blanche) Akin, at Burlington Junction Wednesday at about 10 p.m.  He had eaten his usual three meals  during the day, and seemed in usual spirits.

 

Born in Keithsburg, Illinois, he moved in 1881 to a farm southwest of Braddyville.  Ten years ago he went to Maryville,  where a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Fine, lives and later went to Burlington Junction to live first with the son, Oren Gates, and then the daughter, Mrs. Akin.

 

Mr. Gates had nine great-great-grandchildren, in addition the 12 grand-children, 26 great-grandchildren and three children.  A son, Glenn, died in the 1956 in Downing, California.

 

Mr. Gates had reached the age of 102 of 102 last February.

The funeral is to be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Christian Church in Braddyville with the Rev, Allen Baugh of the Burlington Junction Church in charge.  Burial will be in the Braddyville cemetery where is wife was placed in the family plot in 1913.

 

Beulah M. “Bea” Gates

 

Beulah M. “Bea” Gates, the daughter of L. D. and Lydia (Huddle) Hamm was born September 2, 1922 near Clarinda, and passed away Saturday, July 21, 2007 at Omaha, Nebraska.

 

Beulah M. “Bea” Gates attended country school in Shambaugh and Braddyville, graduating from Braddyville High school in 1940.  Bea was united in marriage to Norris Gates on May 9, 1942 in Maryville, Missouri and to this union was born a son, Robert.

 

Bea was a homemaker, but did work in retail in her later years.  She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Shenandoah and the Church Circle.  She loved her home, music, her friends but most of all her family.

 

Preceding Bea in death were her parents, husband, Norris on March 23, 2001, son Robert Gates, brother Arlo Hamm, sister Alice Gordon, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Paul and Pauline Gates. 

 

Survivors include her granddaughter, Wendi Spencer of Birmingham, Alabama; great grandson, Matthew Spencer of Birmingham, Alabama; daughter-in-law Joyce Gates of Birmingham, Alabama, brother Clifford Hamm and wife Dorothy of Shenandoah, nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

 

A Celebration of Life service was held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at the Selby-Kirsch Funeral Home in Shenandoah with Rev. Karen Bush officiating.  Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.  There was open visitation at the Selby-Kirsch Funeral Chapel.  Memorials were suggested to the Shenandoah First Christian Church or the People for Paws. 

 

Norris G Gates

 

Norris G. Gates, 78, of Shenandoah, formerly of Braddyville, died March 24, 2001.   He was born December 23, 1922 in Clearmont, Missouri, to Glen and Zelah (Nixon) Gates.  He grew up around the Clearmont, Missouri, and Braddyville areas, graduating from Braddyville High School. He married Bea on September 2, 1942 in Maryville Missouri.  After graduation, he and his moved to California where he worked or the Edison Company.  In 1943, returned to Iowa where he was employed by May Seed Company.  In 1944, he started his long career with the US Soil Conversation Service, retiring after 35 years of service.

 

He refereed for both girls and boys basketball for about 25 years, being inducted into the Iowa Officials Hall of Fame.  He was a member of the First Christian Church in Shenandoah.

 

Mr. Gates was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Ester Geist.

 

Survivors include his wife Bea Gates of Shenandoah, son and daughter-in-law Bob and Joyce Gates of Birmingham, Alabama, one granddaughter, one great grandson, brother and sister-in-law Paul and Pauline Gates of Waterman, Illinois, brother–in-law Ed Geist of Perris California, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

 

Funeral services were March 28 at the Selby Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah with Rev Karen Bush of the First Christian church officiating.  At the memory register was Janice Ross.  Caring for flowers were Jane Foster and Eleanor Sligar.  Organist was Judy Lundgren.  Casket bearers were Ernie Aust, Darrel Bettis, Randy Carpenter, Robbie Carpenter, Arlo Hamm, Donnelle Hullman, and Lorenz Meir.  Honorary Bearers were Dave Sligar, John and Lorraine Mall and Paul and Lois Van Fosson. 

 

Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church of Shenandoah or to the donors choice amd may be left at the funeral chapel.  Selby Fueral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

 

 

G D Gates Died of a Heart Attack

Former Braddyville Man Had Been with

California Daughter

 

Braddyville (Special) – Glen Dwight Gates, 65, died Monday afternoon (11-7-1955) in a hospital at Downing, California.

 

Mr. Gates suffered a heart attack Sunday and another Monday from which he was unable to recover.  He lived for many years in this locality before going to California to make his home about 12 years ago.

 

He is survived by his wife of Downing, a daughter, Mrs. Esther Geist of Compton, California, two sons, Paul of Grinnell, Iowa and Norris of Shenandoah.  His father C. A. Gates of Burlington Junction, Missouri, a brother Orin Gates and a sister Mrs. Ace Ackin, both of Burlington Junction and a sister, Mrs. Hazel Fine of Maryville, Missouri.

 

Paul and Norris Gates left early Tuesday for California to attend the funeral.  Time of services depends upon time of arrival of Iowa relatives.

 

Obituary for Mrs. Levi Good

 

Mrs. Levi Good, living near Hawleyville, died this morning from trouble resulting from childbirth.  The little babe, five days old, is still alive.  Mrs. Good, was aged about forty years, and formerly lived northeast of Shambaugh.  Funeral services will be held tomorrow at the Davis School House, tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Reverend Cabbage of Shambaugh.  Mr. Good is a cousin of J. R. Good of this city.  Mrs. Good's maiden name was McKinnon, being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff McKinnon

 

Services held for Mrs. Guenther

 

Mason Township – Funeral services for Mrs. Anna M. Guenther, 87, were held this Monday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home and burial in the Clarinda Cemetery.

 

She died Friday at the rural home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bordon, south of New Market, where she had madder her home for nine years.   She had had a heart condition, and had broken her hip in the fall during her late years.

 

She was born May 11, 1885, at Greenville, Tennessee, to John C. and Mary Frances McNeese.  She was married Jan 11, 1903 to Albert (Allie) Guenther who died August 24, 1955.

 

She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Gladys) Bordon, South of New Market, and Mrs. Dorothy Cooper of Clarinda and one son Harold of Bedford.  There are six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.  Mrs. Lillie Hughes of Clarinda is a sister.  A son, Glenn, died several years ago.

 

Carl Cummings officiated at the service with Maynard Burch soloist and Joyce Burch organist.  Casket bearers were John Harness, Lavern Young, Carroll McKay, Elza West, Dale Martindale and Bill McDonald.

 

Ruth Hamm died in California

 

Shambaugh – Mr. and Mrs. Bill Knizley received word February 22 of the death of her aunt, Ruth Hamm.

 

Hamm was born February 10, 1915 and died February 22, 1987 in Aurora, Missouri.

 

Survivors include two sons, Gordon Powell of Fresno, California and Stanley Hamm of Aurora, and seven grandchildren.

 

She was married to Ralph Hamm who died February 12, 1986.

 

Ada May Hamm

 

Ada May Hamm, 76, died Saturday, march 6, 1993, in her home near Warsaw, Missouri.  She was born March 1, 1917, in Breckenridge, Missouri, the daughter of George and Mary Barren Walker. 

 

She attended school in Davis County, Missouri, and on November 2, 1940, married Kenneth Hamm in Gallatin, Missouri.  Following their marriage they made their home in the College Springs area.  The later moved to Shenandoah, where she was a dietitian for Hand Community Hospital.

 

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Hamm.

 

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; one son, Kenneth Hamm, Junior, of Warsaw; one daughter, Margaret Kingsolver of Shenandoah; six grandchildren and one great granddaughter. 

 

Graveside services will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in College Springs at 1 pm on Tuesday, March 9. 

 

Visitation will be Monday, March 8, from 7 to 8 pm at the Reser Funeral Home in Warsaw.

 

Mrs. C. A. Hamm

 

Charlotte Belle Woodruff, daughter of Nehemiah and Emma Jones Woodruff was born at Tama County, Iowa, February 5, 1847 and departed this life May 1, 1934 at Shambaugh, Iowa at the age of 67 years, 2 months, and 26 days. 

 

She was married to Charles A. Hamm at Shambaugh, Iowa November 5, 1885.  To this union were born six children, two sons, Ralph and Hertber, and four daughters, Avis Squire, Audrey Phipps, Iva Johnson, and Gladys, who preceded her in death.

 

When a small child her parents moved to Page county, Iowa, where she spent most of her life.  She was one of a family of ten children.  Four of whom survive, David of Sacramento, California, Walter of Harrison, Nebraska, Fred of St. Joseph, and Charles of Shambaugh.

 

She leaves to mourn her their loss her husband, five children, four brothers, eight grandchildren, besides a host of relatives and friends.

 

When a young woman she made her profession of faith and became a member of the Methodist Church.  She was a lover of books and flowers.

 

She was of a quiet disposition, a great home lover, a loving mother and a dutiful wife.  Always thinking of others comfort and happiness instead of her own, even in her last hours of suffering.

 

Funeral services were at 2 o’clock at the Church of God in Shambaugh, conducted by Reverend Cabbage and Rev Ledbetter.  Interment in the Butler Cemetery,

 

A solo “Lead Kindly Light” was sung by Horace Stone.  Duet sung by Mrs. Fern Miller and Elva Mojer was “Under His Wing,” “Saved by Grace,” and The Beautiful Garden of Prayer.”

 

Pall bearers were Lee, Tom, and Ross Woodruff, Jake Bonsall, John Colvin, and Norvel Richards.  Flower girls were Mrs. Lulu  Nichols, Grace Camp, Tina Woodruff, and Mabel Colvin. 

 

A short service was held at the home of her daughter, Audrey Phipps, where she was at the time of her death.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

DECATUR - Ermal Howard Hamm, 88, of Decatur, passed away on Wednesday (July 27, 2005) at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

 

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. on Friday, July 29, 2005, at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, at the Funeral Home. Ermal was born on November 4, 1916, in Shambaugh, Iowa, the son of Herbert L. Hamm and Nellie (Thompson) Hamm. He served his country proudly in the United States Navy during WWII. Ermal married Irmal Higgins on February 17, 1950, in Shambaugh, IA. She preceded him in death on December 10, 1996. He worked as a claims adjuster for L.E. Meyers Construction for 28 years before his retirement. Ermal enjoyed golfing, fishing, woodcarving and traveling and he will be deeply missed by his family and cat Coco.

 

Surviving are his son Edwin Hamm and wife Kathy of Aurora, CO; son Michael Hamm and wife Sue of Decatur; son Russell Hamm and wife Suk of Aurora, CO; step-daughter Mary Thatcher and husband Tom of Manassas, VA; step-daughter Patricia Merrill and husband Richard of Lakewood, CO; sister Juanita Scott of Hastings, NE; eighteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Darrell and Glenn and one stepdaughter Peggy Petrie.

 

Mrs. Josiah Davison

 

Mary Francis Harris, daughter of Nancy S and Caswell Harris, was born near Clarinda, in Page County, Iowa November 24, 1863, and departed this life at the home of her step-daughter, Mrs, Charles Kelley, April 19, 1940, at the age of 76 years, 4 months, and 25 days.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sister and three brothers, she being the last of her immediate family.

 

She was united in marriage to Josiah Davison, January 16, 1888.  To this union one child was born, Mrs. Ethel Thompson.  Mrs. Davision has been in failing health for the last three years, but never complained and always looked on the bright side.  She was a great worker and always ready to do for others. 

 

She leave to revere her memory, Mrs. Ethel Thompson of Clarinda, two step daughters, Mrs. Olive Kelley of Clarinda and Mrs. A. W Everett of Prineville Oregon, seven grandchildren and other relatives, and many friends.

 

Funeral serves were conducted in the Walker Funeral Home by the Reverend W. Frank Lister at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon.  Internment was made in Memory Cemetery near New Market. Casket bearers were Andy Harris, Floyd Kelley, Raymond Kelley, Glen Davison, A O Davison, and Floyd Showater.  Music was furnished by Miss Aletha Hutchings and Mrs. Doris Forbes.

Funeral services for Mrs. Netha E. Davison, 86, of Clarinda will be at 10 am at Walker-Merrick Funeral home with Reverend John Clark officiating.

 

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 7-8 pm this thursday.

 

Mrs. Davison died October 29, 1985 in the afternoon at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital where she had been for the past two weeks.

 

She was born May 28, 1899, near Hawleyville, the daughter of Levi and Harriett McKinnon Good.

 

She was married to Glenn Davison August 6, 1919.  He preceded her in death on November 8, 1972.

 

She had been a member of the Christian Church since 1917, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. 

 

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Wanda) Herzberg, Braddyville, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Searl, Clarinda, and Mrs. Martin (Sharlene) Engstrand, Braddyville.  There are 18 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.  Brothers and sisters are Mrs, Verla  Heil, Clarinda; Mrs. Dale (Lucille) Combs, New Market; Max Good, Neymour, Missouri; and Eldon Good, North Carolian and sister-in-law Mrs. Mary Good, Clarinda.

 

Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.
