Service held for Art Lines

Arthur L Lines, 88, life long Clarinda resident died Thursday afternoon at Goldenrod Manor where he had been a resident for the past year.

He was born October 1, 1891 at Clarinda, the son of Lloyd Shelby and Hortense Rambach Lines.  In 1913 he was married to Amy Ingram who preceded him in death in 1965.

Mr. Lines operated a plumbing business until his retirement. 

He was a member and past master of the Clarinda Masonic Lodge and a member of the first Christian Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Robert (Mary Virginia) Meyer of Clarinda.  There are seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.  Brothers are Joe Lines of Villisca and Max Lines of Corning.  Sisters are Thelma Hutchings of Cold Springs, Kentucky and Helen Thomas of Santa Cruz, California.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev John Clark officiating.  Grace Perry was the organist and singers were Joan Archer and Ruth Elaine Holmes.  Casket bearers were Walt Pritchard, Merwin Miller, Earl Warner, Lloyd Cavner, Marvin Woldruff, and Bill Black.  Honorary bearers were George Hall, Ralph Hughes, and Oliver Krouch.

Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Guy Kendall Funeral Saturday

Funeral services fro Guy B. Kendall, 91, of Clarinda will be at 1:30 pm Saturday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.

Visitation will be at the funeral home 7-8 Friday.

Mr. Kendall died January 16, 1985 at Bethesda Care Center where he has been for the past two years.

He was born October 5, 1893, in Ringgold County, Iowa, the son of Granville and Abigail Campbell Kendall.

In 1917, he was married to Beulah Heller who survives.

Mr. and Mrs. Kendall farmed in the New Market area before moving to Clarinda 15 years ago. 

Besides his wife of the home, he is survived by seven children:  Mrs. Harley (Marjorie) Thompson of Lebanon, Missouri, Roy of Madrid, Missouri; Mrs. Merlin (Jean) Davison of Braddyville; Robert of Clarinda, Wayne of Lincoln, Nebraska, Dean of Clarinda, and Mrs. Chuck (Shirley) Thomas of Columbus, Nebraska.  There are 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Mr. Kendall was preceded in death by two daughters, Helen Fine, and Eunice Brown and three sisters.

Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Beulah Kendall

Mrs. Beulah Kendall, 94, of Clarinda, died Thursday morning, January 7, 1993 at Bethesda Care Center.

She was born March 27, 1898 at Clarinda, the daughter of Frank and Euna Squires Heller.  She was married to Guy Kendall in April 1917.  He preceded her in death January 16, 1985.

Mrs. Kendall is survived by seven children:  Mrs. Harley (Marjorie) Thompson, Lebanon, Missouri; Roy Kendall, Madrid; Mrs. Merlin (Jean) Davison, Braddyville; Robert Kendall, Clarinda; Wayne Kendall, Lincoln, Nebraska; Mrs. Chuck (Shirley) Thomas, Clarinda.  There are 19 grandchildren, and several great and great great-grandchildren.  Sisters are Ruth Billings, Clarinda, and Mildred Halstead of Oregon.  Mrs. Kendall was preceded in death by parents, husband, and two daughters Helen Fine and Eunice Brown.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 9, 1993 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev Alfred Hunter officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Mrs. Christina Mulkins

Mrs. Christina Mulkins was born in Ohio, June 22, 1842.  She came to Iowa early in life, and settled in Page County, where she spent her life.  She was married to Thomas Butler, who died December 24, 1863.  To this union there were born three children, all living:  Mrs. Edith Hamm of Hopkins, Missouri, Mrs. Sarah Carter of Haxtun, Colorado, and E. W. Butler of Hopkins, Missouri

April 5, 1866 she was married to Joseph Mulkins, who died August 16, 1888.  To this union were born nine children, five of who are still living:  Mrs. L F Beery, Shambaugh, Mrs. H B Bolen, University Place Nebraska, Mrs. Ola Brown, Clarinda, Mrs. Ida Andrews, Mitchell, Nebraska, and Mars R G Davis, Oglivia, Mississippi..

In 1865 she gave her heart to God under the ministry of Elder Shoemaker and Thomas, who were conducting a revival meeting at the fruit schoolhouse.  She attended church at the Mt. Joy schoolhouse long before there was any church house built in Shambaugh.  In 1883 the Church of God was built at Shambaugh, where she was a charter member.

In 1918 she was stricken with paralysis and about a month later suffered a second stroke.  She was a patient sufferer, never complaining.

For the past two years she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Dona (L F) Beery where Tuesday morning, April 13, 1926 at 8:40 she went to her reward. She leave to mourn their loss eight children, forty-two grandchildren, seventy great grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of loving friends.

The funeral services were conducted in the Shambaugh Church of God bethel by her Pastor, J. Roy Branchflower, assisted by J W Cabbage, a former pastor.  Interment was at the Davis Cemetery.  Music for the last service was furnished by a quartet fro the church.

Roscoe Mulkins

Roscoe Mulkins was born November 17, 1907, in East River Township, son of Isaac T and Lulu Grace Hay Mulkins.  He passed away at his home Monday, December 29, 1997.  He was 93 years of age.  He attended Davis County School through the eighth grade.  On March 31, 1927, he was married to Pauline Perry at the church of God parsonage in Shambaugh.  They lived and farmed east of Shambaugh from 1934 until 1974.  In 1974, he and Pauline retired and moved to Clarinda.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Pauline on January 5, 1997, one brother, Samuel, and three sisters, Eva Fulk, Wilma Searl, and Pauline Ford.  He is survived by one son, Gene Mulkins and his wife Marilyn of rural Clarinda, a daughter Sharon Ludington of Atlantic, five grandchildren, David Mulkins and wife Melanie, Rhonda Brown and husband Doug, all of rural Clarinda, Brenda Zellmer and husband Alan of Altantic, Gerald Ludington of Boston, Mass., Rebecca Stahr and husband Tim of Ames; 13 great grandchildren, one sister Blondeen Lindgren and her husband Larry of Redwood City, California, three sisters-in-laws Grace Perry, Clarinda, Maxine Perry and Erma Sarnecki, both of Des Moines, nieces and nephew and many neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 2, 1998, at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda.  Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.  A memorial has been established to the Shambaugh Church of God or the Nodaway Valley Historical Museum.

Pauline L Mulkins

Pauline L Mulkins, 89, of Clarinda died Sunday night, January 5, 1997, at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, where she had been a patient for the past three weeks.

She was born June 22, 1907, in East River Township, Page County, Iowa, the daughter of Clair and Elsie Hamm Perry.  On March 31, 1927, she married Roscoe Mulkins, who survives.  They farmed in East River township until moving into Clarinda 22 years ago.

She is survived by her husband Roscoe of the home and two children, Sharon Ludington, Atlantic, Iowa, and Gene Mulkins and wife Marilyn of rural Clarinda.  There are five grandchildren and 13 great Grandchildren.  Sisters are Maxine Perry and Erma Sarnecki, both of Des Moines.  She was preceded in death by parents and brothers Ronald and Raymond.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, January 8, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev Valgene Steffen officiating.  Visitation will be from 7-8 pm, Tuesday evening at the funeral home.  Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the Shambaugh Church of God or the Nodaway Valley Museum.

Frank Miller

Frank Lewis Miller, son of John B, Miller and Madeline Griffin Miller was born June 9, 1913 at Coin, Iowa, and departed this life on Friday, December 22, 1933 at the age of 20 years, 6 months, and 13 days, after an illness of only 10 days.

He moved with his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. John Miller to Herrick, South Dakota at the age of the 3 years.  Then at the age of 11 moved to Grand Island, Nebraska where he finished his school work.  Four years ago the family moved to Clarinda.  He was employed at the Farmers Mutual Telephone Company.  The last few months he has been employed by Swift and Company. 

He is survived by his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. John B. Miller; Grandmother, Mrs. A. L. Newlin; brother Lee Miller; Sisters Mrs. Paul Swanson, Rena Belle Miller, Lois Jean Miller, Viola May Miller, Martha Mary Miller all of Clarinda.  Besides these he has a number of uncles and aunts and host of friends.

Services were held at the residence at 1014 S 18th Street at 1:30 pm  on December 24, 1933 by Rev Carl E Person.  Songs by Mrs. Doris Forbes and Wilma Anderson.  The pall bearers were Wilson Clemons, Woodrow Clemons, Clarence Stipe, Everett Wray, Donald Swanson, Darwin Swanson.

Burial was at the Elmwood Cemetery at Coin, Iowa

Mrs. Flo Miller’s service Wednesday

Shambaugh (Special) – Mrs. Flo (Snodgrass) Miller, 79, died suddenly Sunday When she became ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Floyd (Isa) Hughes here.  They had had their lunch when the mother became ill and was taken to the hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm on Wednesday, with Rev H LaVern Kinzel in charge, assisted by Rev R C Godsey.  Soloist will be Betty Bix, and organist will be Sheryl Frank.  Casket bearers will Charles Hughes, Eddie Miller, Randy Miller, Paul Blair, Jay Clark, and Ronnie Bramble.  Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

The family home has been east of Shambaugh, a son, Leo and family being residents there.  The five children include, Leo, Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Ila Blair of Hopkins, Mervin of Clarinda, and Ermal of Topeka, Kansas.  Mrs. Miller’s home had been at 623 Chestnut.

Elizabeth Vanway

The Journal has been furnished with the following particulars concerning the life and death of the later Mrs. Vanway:

“Miss Elizabeth Journey was born in Highland county, Ohio, June 2, 1851, and moved with her parents Mr. and Mrs. William Journey, from Ohio to Page County, Iowa.  Her she was reared to womanhood.  She had five brothers and sisters.  Three brother and three sisters are still living.  Miss Elizabeth Journey was married to William Fruits early in the year 1865 and to this union were born eight children:  Frank Fruits, New Market, Iowa; C. W. Fruits, California; J. H. Fruits of Montana; A M Fruits, Of Kentucky; G C Fruits, New Market, Iowa; Matilda Fruits and Mary Fruits both died in infancy.  Etta Fruits, another daughter, is still living and married to Charles Miller, and Etta and family are living in Page County, Iowa.

In 1889 Mrs. Elizabeth Fruits again married to D. T. Vanway.  Mrs. Vanway was a strong believer in Jesus.  She was at one time a member of the Untied Brethren church.  At the time of her death, she did not belong to any denomination, yet she was a very strong believer in our savior. 

Mrs. Vanway died Friday, November 12, 1915 at 2:15 o’clock am. She leaves to mourn their loss her husband, her six children, and her sisters and brothers.  She was a kind and loving mother.”

The funeral was held Sunday, at New Market, with Rev Jacob Hygema officiating.  She was buried in the Old Memory Cemetery.

Violet Sheets

Mrs. Violet L Sheets, 85 of Braddyville, died Sunday morning, January 2, 1994 at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda.

She was born March 4. 1908, near Elmo, Missouri, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Jackson Farquhar.  On March 2, 1926, she was married to Fletcher Sheets.  They lived in Burlington Junction, Missouri area before moving to Braddyville.

Survivors include three children Lula Merritt, Bell, California; Marvin Sheets, Spokane, Washington; and Mrs. Gene (Marilyn) Mulkins, Clarinda.  There are seven grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren.  Brothers are Roy Farquhar, Norwalk, California, and Elbert Farquhar, Sun City, California.

She was preceded in death by parents, husband, infant son, and brother, Basil.

Funeral services were Tuesday, January 4, 1994 at Walker-Merrick funeral Home in Clarinda with burial in High Prairie Cemetery in Elmo, Missouri.

James Dorsey Maxwell

James Dorsey Maxwell was born September 15, 1844 in Morgan County, Indiana.  With is his father, mother and brothers, they left Indian the year 1853 and came to Iowa.  He father was taken ill in Bloomington, Illinois and died September 1, 1953.  His mother and children resumed their journey to Monroe County, Iowa, and remained until the spring of 1867, when they moved on a farm in Page county, where he lived until his death, except one year which he lived on an adjoining farm.

Mr. Maxwell joined the United Brethren Church I his early age although he did not attend church in later years on account of ill health, but kept his faith until the end.  He expressed his willingness and was prepared and ready to be called.

He was united in marriage to Jane Townsend in Andrew County, Missouri, on May 28, 1876.  To this union were born eleven children, four having preceded him to the better world.  Thos deceased are Letitia C, Malinda J, Annie and George F.  Mrs. Maxwell passed away July 8, 1911.  He leaves to mourn their loss two sons and five daughters, Mary Ella, Sara Elizabeth, John W, Gracy M, Delilah P, Ervena A, and Ellis D;  also three grandsons, Loren D, Maynard L and Harold G Maxwell.  He has one brothers George of Bartlett, Iowa who was present at the funeral.

The funeral was held at the Christian church in Braddyville Sunday afternoon and was conducted by Rev J V Clark, pastor of the Christian Church of New Market.  Interment was in the Shearer Cemetery.

F Schollian, 69, Rites Saturday

Mother, 93, Four children Survive; Lived at Braddyville

Fred E Schollian, 69 former Braddyville businessman, died at 11:40 Wednesday night in the Clarinda hospital where he had been taken only a few hours before with complications from several months illness.   He had been at the Neil Thomas home in Avoca flowing an operation in Marcher.

The funeral service will be at 2:00 Saturday afternoon at the Walker Funeral home with burial in the Clarinda Cemetery.

His 93-year-old mother, Mrs. Emily Schollian survives him.  She has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Lewis Reckling, at Waverly, Nebraska since a year ago, when lightning struck her home, burned it and her brother with who she lived.

Four of his children, Mrs. James Eichelberger and Mrs. Stanley Stimson of here, Mrs. Thomas of Avoca and Lewis of Tarkio, Missouri, are here now, and his four brother and sisters, Mrs. Reckling, Mrs. Dick Pentonpole of  Princeton, Nebraska, Harold of College Springs, and Fran of Gettysburg, South Dakota are expected.

Mr. Schollian farmed in Buchanan township until moving to Braddyville in 1920 to enter business.  He brought his family to Clarinda in 1832 when hi s wife passé away, and five years later he went to Charles City, Iowa to work being in nursery and factory work until health prevented early this year.

Services Pending for Audrey Phipps

Audrey Phipps, 86, died at December 12, 1985 at  noon at Clarinda Municipal Hospital.  She was a Clarinda Resident.

She is survived by one daughter, Marguerite Knizley of Shambaugh; two grandchildren; four great-  grandchildren and one brother Ralph Hamm of Aurora, Missouri.

Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  Burial will be at Butler Cemetery near Shambaugh. 

Funeral services are pending as of press time this Thursday.

Geo W Thorne, 92, funeral today

One of Sons Able to Join Mother for Rites Thursday

George W Thorne, Clarinda’s 92-year-old citizen, died at his home on west Willow street at 3:45 o’clock Monday afternoon following several weeks that he had been in weakened condition.  He has been unusually active at his advanced age. 

The funeral service was held this Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Foster-Harmon Funeral Home.  A son, Dale of Huron, South Dakota, arrived Wednesday.  Rev E N Garvin and Rev H O Lietman were in charge. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Mrs. and Mrs. Throne have lived in Clarinda for many years, but were farming in the Shambaugh vicinity prior to their leaving the rural home.  Mr. Thorne was known for his work with engines, particularly threshing machines.  Another son, Ralph, resides at Orobell, New Jersey and was here in recent weeks to visit buy unable to come at this time.  Mrs. Dale Thorne has been caring for the home for several weeks.

Harold Twaddle did masonry

Mr. Harold K Twaddle, 79, of College Springs died Wednesday night, (May 27, 1987) at his home in College Springs after a long illness.

He was born June 29, 1907, at Worland, Wyoming, the son of Arthur and Minnie McComb Twaddle. 

On May 27, 1939 he was married Lily Mae Cates who survives.

He is survived by his wife of the home and three children; Dan Twaddle, Frankford, Kentucky, Michael Twaddle, College Springs, and Mrs. Valiere (Joel) Pentico, Randolph, Nebraska.   There are six grandchildren.

Mr. Twaddle was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Farrell, and an infant brother.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 am at Maple Hill Cemetery at College Springs, with Masonic services in charge of Emmanuel Lodge #405 of Blanchard.

Services Wednesday for Mrs. Stickelman

Mrs. I E (Jennie) Stickelman, 80, died at the Clarinda Municipal hospital at 6 am Saturday after having suffered a heart attack about six weeks ago.  She had been able to return to her home on June 14, but was returned to the hospital June 24, where she remained until she passed away.

She was a native of Savannah, Iowa, but spent most of her lifetime at Clarinda, the present home being at 614 Tarkio Street.

She and her husband had the happy occasion to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary recently.  Besides her husband, she is survived by four children:  Mrs. Ray (Laura) Hughes, Indianola; Howard D Stickelman; Barstow, California; Mrs. Wendell (Marian) Davison and Keith Stickelman, Clarinda; three brothers are Elbert E Lister and Charles Lister of Clarinda and Walter Lister, Denver, Colorado.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm Wednesday, with Rev Avin Reed of Clearmont Christian Church in charge, assisted Preacher Clarence Potter of the New Market Church of Christ.  Soloist at the service will be Mrs. Alvin Reed and the organist will be Miss Aletha Hutching.  Flower bearers will be Corda Fuller, Forna Fuller, Mrs. Frank Van Pelt, Mrs. Earl Pearson, Mrs. Merle Harland.

Honorary casket bearers will be Fred McIntyre, George Crawford, Jesse Brown, Thomas Harris, Earl Pearson, George Stanley, Bob Malcom, and George Alexander.  Active casket bearers will be Wade Crawford, Cecil Hayes, Harry Wenell, Frank Van Pelt, and Merle Harland. 

Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery

John Bicknese

The funeral for John F. Bicknese, 78, who died Monday, Aug. 13, 1973, was at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Paul's United Church of Christ. The Rev. Emil Burrichter, officiated. Burial in the church cemetery.

John Frederick, son of Henry and Marie Peek Bicknese, was born Jan. 3, 1895, in Wheatland. He married Louise Beckman here March 10, 1920. A lifelong Wheatland resident, he was a veteran of World War I; member of American Legion; member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ; and a retired farmer.

Surviving are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Jacob (Ruth) Stimson, Clarinda, and Mrs. Blanche Swift, Anamosa; two sons, Benjamin, Montreal, Canada, and Wayne, West Union; 10 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Oberg, Denver, Colorado, and a brother, Fred, Frankfort, S.D.

His parents; five brothers; and two sisters preceded him in death.

Pallbearers were LeRoy Anderson, Robert Stankee, Lloyd Hamdorf, Jerome Patterson, Duane Lasack, and Glen Stankee.

Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Emil Burrichter and Mrs. Elmer Kelting.

Wilma Riedesel was the organist.

At the family memorial service before the funeral, the flag was presented to Mrs. Bicknese by Everett Ferguson, of Mechanicsville, World War I Veteran friend of Jack’s,. there was congregational singing; and a duet by Carolyn D'Arcy and Jonathan Stimson, also a taped rendition of "That Will Be Glory For Me", previously sung and taped for the family by Jack and Louise, along with many other hymns.

Jacob H Stimson

Jacob H. Stimson, 81, of rural Clarinda, died Wednesday, April 19, 1995 at his home where he was born February 14, 1914 to John and Anna (Hamm) Stimson.

He was a member of Farm House Fraternity at Iowa State University.  He was the champion individual at International Livestock Exposition, Chicago, Illinois.

He was a avid sports fan, participating in track in high school and college, being the captain of the Iowa State Cross Country Team.

He graduated from ISU in 1939 and began his work as Clinton County’s 4-H club agent.  He met his wife, Ruth Bicknese, at a rural youth meeting and they were married June 27, 1941.  After this he became County Extension Agent of Jackson County,

After two years in the Navy, they relocated to Page County in 1946.  Here, Stimson raised purebred Angus cattle along with his farming. 

He was active in the community, taking his turn as president of the Angus Association, Fair Board, and Farm Bureau. He was active in the Shambaugh Missionary Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harold and Fred; granddaughter Gina Brian Sacks; and son-in-law Charles Morrow.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; six children, Joyce Ann Morrow, Olathe Kansas; Carolyn and her husband Mort Sacks, Santa Barbara, California; Marilyn and her husband Tom Baker, Paso Robles, California; Janlyn and her husband Bob Simpson, Paso Robles; Jonathan and his wife, Jane, Clarinda, and David Jacob and his wife Naomi, Clarinda.

Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, brother Stanley Stimson, Clarinda; sister LaVaun Johnston, Coin; and Elsie Kleese, Washington.

Funeral services were Monday, April 24 at Hillside Missionary Church, Clarinda with Pastors Scott Denham, Bob Thompson, and David Silvia officiating.  Burial was in Clarinda Cemetery.

Memorials are directed to Gideon’s International.

Mrs. Don Squier was South Page Teacher

Shambaugh (Special) – Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 pm a the Walker Funeral  Home in Clarinda for Mrs. Don Squier, who died Wednesday morning at Shambaugh.  Her death was unexpected although she had been in ill health for several months.

Formerly, Lenora Taylor, she was born in Montgomery County, near Grant and lived her entire life in Iowa.  In March of 1940 she was married to Don Squier and the couple lived most of their married life on a farm northwest of Shambaugh.  They were residents of College Springs for two years and the past two years have lived in Shambaugh.

The past two years, Mrs. Squier was a teacher of South Page kindergarten at Braddyville.  Before that she taught at College Springs, Elliott, Villisca and a rural school near Grant.  She was active in the Shambaugh Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Don;  Mother, Mrs. R. D. Taylor of Grant; six brothers, Seymour, Lloyd and Stanley of Villisca, Joe of Hastings, Nebraska, Wayne of Omaha, and Gerald of Ellliott; and four sisters, Mrs. Dora Schuler, Elliott; Mrs. Mark Bass, Red Oak, Miss Myrtle Taylor, Springfield, Nebraska, and Mrs. Albert Schuler of Granada, Minnesota

Mrs. Snively died one month after husband

Shambaugh (Special) – Death came to Mrs. Frank Snively, 67 last Friday Morning, just one month and five days after the death of her husband.

She had been in ill health for the past several years, but was not taken to the hospital until about a week after Mr. Sniveler’s death, and remained in the hospital until her death.

She was born in Ringgold County, being one of seven children, all of whom preceded her in death with the exception of one sister, Mrs. May Hiser, who lives in Cameron, Missouri.  She is also survived by two granddaughters Leatrice Snively and Farah Lea Greer, both of whom made their home with their grandparents at Shambaugh, since the death of their parents several years ago.

Funeral services were conducted from the Walker Funeral home at 2 pm this Monday with Rev I E Stickelman in charge.  Soloist at the service was Maynard Burch and the organist was Grace Perry.   Casket bearers were Marvin Runyan, Darwin Townsend, Don Squier, Leland Bunting, Keith Parker, and Melvin Cabbage.  Burial was at the side of her husband in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Fletcher Sheets

Fletcher Sheets, 87, of Braddyville, died Thursday morning at the Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, where had been the past two weeks.

He was born June 9, 1904 at Elmo, Missouri, the son of John and Mary Ann Honaker) Sheets.

Fletcher was married to Violet Farquhar on March 2, 1926.  She survives and resides at the Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda.  Other survivors include three children, Marvin Sheets of Spokane, Washington; daughters Lulu Merriett of Bell, California, and Mrs. Gene (Marilyn) Mulkins of Clarinda.  There are seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren and sister, Viola Miers of St. Joseph, Missouri.

Fletcher was also preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, son-in-law, one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda at 1:30 pm.  Burial will be in the High Prairie Cemetery in Elmo, Missouri.  Memorials may be directed to the Nodaway Valley Historical Museum in Clarinda.

O. Wayne Plowman

CAMERON, Mo. - O. Wayne Plowman, 88, Cameron, formerly of Daviess County, Mo., died Sunday, December 13, 2009.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Russell Plowman, of the home; sons, Paul (Janie) Plowman, and Donald (Sue) Plowman; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, December 18, at the First Christian Church. Burial with military rites: in McFall Cemetery, McFall, Mo. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Roberson Funeral Home, Pattonsburg, Mo., where friends may call after 4 Thursday.

Eugene L. Russell

Eugene L. Russell, son of Ralph Eugene and Mamie Hoag Russell, born at Ord, Nebraska, Feb. 11, 1892. Entered into rest Jan. 3, 1970, at Nevada, Missouri. Funeral services were held at the Shorten-Janssen Chapel, Nevada, January 7, 1970 with Rev. John W. Pfister officiating. Interment in Morre Cemetery, Nevada, Mo.

He and his wife, Gayle Anderson Russell bore three children, Keith Eugene, now of Mesa, Ariz., Ruth Russell Hamm of Sioux City, Iowa and Pauline Russell Plowman of Weatherby Missouri.; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casket escorts: Gary Russell ,Russell Steinmetz, Delmar Daniels, Melvin Janssen, Paul Rapp and Clarence Davenport.

Gayle Anderson Russell

Gayle Beatrice Anderson was born January 15, 1895 at Coin, Iowa, and died May 22, 1953 at the age of 58 years, 4 months, and 7 days.  She was the daughter of James H and Ella Anderson of Coin, who preceded her in death. 

She was married to Eugene L Russell at Coin in 1913.  To this union were born three children:  Keith E Russell of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Mrs. Ruth B. Hamm, Glenwood, Iowa, and Mrs. Pauline Plowman, Pattonsburg, Missouri.

She also leaves to mourn her passing four brothers, Paul M Anderson of Chillcothe, Ohio, Arthur V Anderson, of Coin, J Russell Anderson of Des Moines, and J Garth Anderson, New York, New York, and their families and sol 6 grandchildren.

She grew up in Coin, Iowa, where she attended school and was a member of the Methodist Church.  Early in her married life she moved t a farm near College Springs, where they lived until moving to Pattonsburg, Missouri in 1933.  Later she moved to Columbus, Ohio where her death occurred.

Mrs. Port Reed

Delphi Arline Campbell Reed, daughter of Elmer E and Susie Murphy Campbell was born November 4, 1900 near Cumberland, Iowa, Cass County and departed this life at her home in Shambaugh, Iowa at 9:15 am on July 14, 1969 at the age of 68 years, 8 months and 10 days after a long illness.

Most of her young life was spent in and around Grant, Iowa until she moved to Clarinda I 1920.  In 1926 she entered nurses training at Mercy Hospital in Oskaloosa, Iowa.  After graduating in 1929, she started her nursing career at Mercy Hospital.

On August 24, 1933 she was united in marriage to George Porter Reed at the Methodist Church in Maryville, Missouri and to this union was born three children, Gary P Peed, Princeton, Nebraska, Mrs. Marlin (Joyce) Hoy, Norfolk, Virginia, and Mrs. Charles, (Janess) Warren, Shambaugh, Iowa.

To mourn their loss she leaves her husband, the above mentioned children, seven grandchildren, Gayle, Kim and Kevin Reed and Karen, Brad, brain and Carol Hoy.  Four brothers Paul of Warren, Michigan, Elvin of Clarinda, Iowa, George of Atlantic, Iowa and Delbert of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; three sisters Florence Nease, of San Diego, California, Mrs. Nick (Iris) Roberts, Clarinda, Iowa, and  Mrs.. Mark (Doris) Fielder of Grand Island, Nebraska,; one aunt Mrs. Rachael McCauley of Kimball, Nebraska and a host of nieces, nephews, friends. 

She was preced in death by her parents and a brother, Marion R Campbell who gave his life I 1918 on the battlefields of France.

Mrs. Reed spent her entire married life in Shambaugh, Iowa.  She returned to her profession in 1943 at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital where she was superintendent for the following 8 years.  She then continued her profession at the state level.

Ben Eberly

Ben Eberly, 79, of Clarinda, died Tuesday night at Veterans hospital in Omaha were he had been since the first of December.  Before going to the hospital he had been a patient at West Heights Manor.

He was retired from the Army after 30 years of service, an ardent outdoorsman.  He was born February 24, 1893, near Clarinda the son of Samuel M and Mary Susan Massau Eberly  He is survived by two brothers, Cyrus of Crelley, Colorado and George of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.  Two sisters are Mrs. Lee (Ruth) Harbaugh and Mrs. Ida Bowders both of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am, Friday at Walker Funeral Home with Rev Eddie Filder of Centerville officiating.  Burial will be in the Butler Cemetery.

The Clarinda American Legion will have gravesides services.  Mrs. Joan Archer will be soloist and Miss Althea organist.  Casket bearers will be Gerald Eberly, Ronald Wallace, Ray Thompson, Merl Eberly  Dean Thompson, and Vincent Dancer.

Mrs. Sarah Eberly

Sarah Louisa, daughter of Abraham and Mary Huddle was born on November 7, 1871 and departed this life, July 30, 1933 at the age of 61 years, 8 months, and 23 days.

On March 8, 1888 she was united in marriage to Martin D Eberly and to this union were four children:  Mary E., Edward S., Lulu Esther, and Martin Raymond all of whom are still living.

Sarah was the youngest of a family of twelve children, seven of who have precede her to the great beyond, Emanuel, William, Peter, Caroline, Eli, Solomon, and Lovina, who died in infancy.

With the exception of three years, which Mr. and Mars. Eberly and two oldest children spent in Frontier County, Nebraska, Mrs. Eberly has liver her entire life in Page County, Iowa.

Sarah first confessed in Christ at the age of eleven years, under the ministry of Rev, A. A. Miller, and in 1892 she was baptized by Reverend Andrew Good and united with the church of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ and has continued a faithful member.

Thos who mourn her departure are her beloved husband and children. Mrs. J. C. Davis of Shambaugh, Edward of Villisca, Mrs. Leroy Dunn of Clearmont, Missouri, and Raymond of Hopkins Missouri, besides eleven grandchildren and the following named brothers and sisters, Noah Huddle, Mrs. J. L. Williams, Mrs. Wise Brown all of Shambaugh, and Rev Jesse Huddle of Wapello, Iowa, also other relatives and friends.

Pall bearers were Noah Huddle, Emery Huddle, Cris Huddle, Orson Huddle, Arthur Williams, Jim Hamm.  Services at the Mennonite Church, Tuesday at 10 am.  Burial at Butler Cemetery, Rev Young officiating

Chas B Shaver, 79, funeral Thursday

Charles B. Shaver, 79 died quite suddenly of a heart attach at 4:45 pm, Tuesday.  He was at his home at 823 N 15th Street and was discovered by his landlady, Mrs. Mae Howlett, when she returned from tow.  Mr. Shaver was a native of Iowa, being born in this area, and his lifetime work was farming.  His wife, the former Violet Heller, preceded him in death in 1939.

Survivors are two sons, Charles Shaver, Cresco, and Doyle Shaver, Winston, Oregon; a brother, Fred Shaver, Riceville; and locally by three brothers-in-law:  Duane “Curly” Eighmy, Preston Billings, and Guy Kendall..

Funeral services will be conducted from the Walker Funeral Home at 10:30 am Thursday, with the Rev Clem Keyes in charge.  Casket bearers will by Jack Eighmy, Bob Kendall, Dean Kendall, Jerry Fine, Guy Kendall, and Preston Billings, and burial will be at the side of his wife in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Ida Belle Davison

Davison, Ida Belle Bebout was born July 15, 1861 and died October 1, 1931 at Shambaugh, Iowa.  She married June 30, 1878 to George W. Davison and to them were born four children:  Mrs. Ed Fleming of Ballintine, Montana, Mrs. Ira smith of Bedford, Lawrence of Blanchard, Iowa, and Lester of Council Bluffs, Iowa.  They had 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  Burial was in Shearer Cemetery.

Robert M. Searl

Mr. Robert M. Searl, 63, Clarinda, died early Sunday morning January 20, 1991, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Wednesday.

He was born May 27, 1927, at Coin, Iowa the son of Charles Luther and Blanche Arnold Searle.  On September 16, 1950, he was married to Shirley Davison who survives.

Mr. Searl had worked in maintenance at the MHI before his retirement.

He is survived by his wife Shirley of the home and six children:  Jack Searl, Mound, Minnesota, Stephen Searl, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mrs. James (Marla) Randolph, Yorktown, Iowa, Mrs. Lynn (Terri) Johnson, Clarinda, Iowa, Mrs. David (Elaine) Long, Clarinda, Iowa, and Glenn Searl, Clarinda, Iowa.  There are 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Brother and sisters are Charles Searl, Springfield, Oregon, Frances Mc Comb, Grand Island, Nebraska, Marjorie Smiley, Shenandoah, Iowa, and Wanda Finlay, Shenandoah, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by parents and brother, Dr. Richard Searl. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am, Wednesday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev John Clark, officiating. 

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 7-8 pm Tuesday evening.

Burial will be at the Clarinda Cemetery. 

Zella C. Ridenour

Zella C. Ridenour, 83, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, July 10, 1992, at her sister’s house in West Des Moines, where she had been visiting.

Services were held at the New Market United Methodist Church Tuesday at 2 pm. The Rev. Blair Rohde-Frank of the New Market United Methodist Church officiated.

Burial was in the Old Memory Cemetery in New Market.

Survivors include her sons, Robert of Vinton, Richard of Cedar Rapids; three sisters Thora Collins of Des Moines, Giovanna Ries of West Des Moines and Burdine Baker of Lone Tree; two brothers Jerald Cunningham of Des Moines and John Cunningham of Sacramento, California.

Also surviving are her daughters-in-law Lois of Vinton and Carol of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren and five Great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one granddaughter.

She was born May 19, 1910 in Lorimor to Rev. John and Pearl Booth Cunningham.  Her mother died when Zella was an infant.  Her father then married Agnes Imus in 1911.  Zella graduated from Bedford high school in 1928.

Zella and Orville Ridenour were married June 13, 1928.  They farmed in the Bedford, Gravity, and New Market areas.  They then lived in New Market and Bedford until his death in 1985.  Zella moved to Vinton and Cedar Rapids to be closer to her sons.

She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.  She was pianist in the Gravity United Methodist Church for many years and organist in the New Market United Methodist Church for 21 years. 

Memorials may be made to the New Market United Methodist Church.

Obituary – Mrs. William R Thorne

Susan Hester Matthews was born in Fleming County, Kentucky, April 4, 1825 and died in Clarinda, October 9, 1825, aged 86 years, 6 months, and 3 days.

When nine years of age her parents moved to Clark County, Indiana.  On November 12, 1848, she was married to William R. Thorne of Madison, Indiana, moving at once to Rush County, Indiana.  In 855 they moved to Warren County, Illinois, arriving there Oct 20th.  On the 4th of February 1890 Mr. Thorne died.  Since then Mrs. Thorne has made her home with her children of which three survive her, G. W. Thorne of Clarinda, Mrs. Lizzie Douglass of Olathe, Kansas, and Mrs. Alma White at whom she died.

She united in childhood with the Presbyterian Church.  After her marriage she connected with the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of which her husband was a member.  At the time of her death she was a member of the College Springs U. P. Church with which she connected August 5, 1899.  After a long and useful like she died I faith and passed triumphantly to her reward.

Funeral service where held at the home of Mrs. White in Clarinda, Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. P. Nesbit.  Interment took place at the College Springs cemetery

Maxine Reynolds Last Rites Held.

Funeral services for Miss Maxine Reynolds were held Thursday May 22, 1969 at 2 pm from the Wolfe Funeral Home, Clergy man was Rev Naim E. Saikaly.

Miss Helen Bunker was organist.  Flower bearers were Miss Thelma Means and Mrs. Mabel Grace Sidwell. 

Dr. Harold Sidwell, Lee Means, Robert Brannan, Tim Marsh, Orville marsh and Ed way were casket bearers.

Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak Iowa. with Wolf Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Maxine Reynolds was born on May 20, 1904 at Emerson, Iowa.  She was the daughter of Charles E and Flora Reynolds.  She died at Boulder, Colorado on May 17, 1969. 

Maxine worked at the Nodaway Valley National Bank in before leaving Villisca.  For the last 20 years she worked at the First National Bank in Boulder, Colorado. 

She is survived by two brothers, Edward E Reynolds of Villisca and Francis G Reynolds of Downers Grove, Illinois; one sister Mrs. Carl W Anderson of Orlando, Florida; two nephews and two nieces.

Maxine was a member of the Villisca Presbyterian Church, also the OES.

Mildred Pauline Wilcoxson

Pauline Wilcoxson died Sunday evening, January 11, 1998, at Clarinda Regional Health Care Center.  She had been a resident of Clarinda Community Care for the past five years.  Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm Thursday, January 15, at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, with Rev. Eddie Fidler officiating.  There is an open visitation at the funeral home.  Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery east of Clarinda.  Memorial may be direct to the Clarinda Church of God.

Mrs. Wilcoxson was born Jan 24, 1911 at Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Andrew and Carrie Ross Eberly.  On August 8, 1928 she married George Wilcoxson, who died September 29, 1971.  She had worked at Berry Seed Company, Swift and Company, and nursing at MHI.

She is survived by seven children:  Maybelle Henry and husband Everett, Yuma, Arizona, Marion Wilcoxson, Clarinda, Ethel Carmichael, Omaha, Nebraska, Paul Wilcoxson and wife, Velma, Bedford, Iowa, Goldie Scroggs, Glenwood, Iowa, Robert Wilcoxson and wife, Paula, Santee, California, and Charles Wilcoxson and wife Susie, Little Rock, Arkansas.  There are 21 grandchildren, and several great and great- great-grandchildren.  Brothers and sister surviving are Bill Eberly, Clarinda, Roy Eberly, Minnesota, Marie Thompson, Clarinda, and Edith Wallace, Springfield, Missouri.  Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, a son in infancy, sister Lutie Myers and brothers Merl and Robert Eberly.

Milton Swanson service held

Graveside serves for Milton Swanson, 68, of Clarinda were held last Saturday morning at Bethesda cemetery with Rev David Palm officiating.

Mr. Swanson was born August 25, 1913 in Page County, the son of Oscar and Amanda Larson Swanson.

He had lived in Burlington Junction, Missouri and Maryville, recently returning to Clarinda to live.

Survivors include two children Michael Swanson of Ladora, Iowa, and Mrs. Mary Milburn, Kansas City, Missouri.  There are eight grandchildren.  Brother are Rubert and Omar Swanson of Clarinda and Clifford Swanson of Stanton. 

Burial was in Bethesda cemetery with Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Rose Zetta Phipps

Shambaugh (Special) – Mrs. Rebecca Rosezetta (Zetta) Parker Phipps, 91, died at her home in Shambaugh on Friday, June 15, after a three week illness.

She was born in Taylor County on October 22, 1870, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Damewood Parker.  She had lived in Siam, then on a farm west of Shambaugh, finally moving into Shambaugh in 1918.

She was married to John G Phipps on September 17, 1866, who preceded her in death on February 19, 1930.  The couple had three children, include a daughter Jesse, and two sons, Willie of Clarinda, and Roy who died in 1959.

Survivors include the daughter, Jess at home, son Willie of Clarinda;  Brother Charlie Parker of Clarinda, and a sister, Mrs. Ida Borden also of Clarinda;  three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandsons.

Funeral services were conducted by the Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm this Monday afternoon with Rev Dale Elmore in charge.  Vocal music was by Horace Richardson, and organist was Mrs. Helen Hall Hoskinson.  The floral committee was Allene Hazelton, Lesta Crawford and Levone Oline.  Casket bearers were Keith Parker, Dale Weaver, Floyd Pierson, Ottie Thompson, Harve Miller, and Fred Knizley. 

Burial was at the Maple Hill Cemetery at College Springs

Jesse Phipps, 90, died Saturday

Funeral services for Miss Jesse Phipps, 90, will be 1 pm, Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home with Rev Jerald Irvin officiating.

Miss Phipps died Saturday evening at Bethesda Care Center where she ad lived the past two years.

She was born Sept 22, 1887 near Siam, Iowa the daughter of John and Rosetta Parker Phipps.

Miss Phipps had lived at Shambaugh before going to the rest home.  She had worked at the Parris Dunn Company, the local hospital and cafes before retiring.

Survivors include nieces Mrs. Pauline Miller, and Mrs. Jean Kelley of Clarinda, and Mars Marguerite Kinsley of Shambaugh, sister -n-laws are Stella Phipps and Audrey Phipps of Clarinda.

H. E. Richardson will be the soloist and Carolyn Young, organist.  Casket bearers will be Harley Howard, Willie Babb, Keith Parkers, Lowell Pullen, Cayrol Knizley and Ottie Thompson.

Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery at College Springs.

Roy Phipps

Roy Phipps, youngest son of John G. Phipps and Rose Zetta Parker Phipps was born on December 2, 1896 on a farm near Siam, Iowa.  Following a long, extended illness, he entered into rest, January 12, 1959, in the Veterans Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 62 years, one month, and 10 days.

He was united in marriage to Audrey Hamm June 4, 1917.  To this union was born one daughter, Margueritte (Mrs. Bill Knizley) of Shambaugh. 

He was a veteran of WW I.

Most of his life was spent farming and trucking until Ill health caused him to retire in 1953.

He was devoted to his family and home.  Many cherished memories of him will be long remembered by them.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1930.

Those left to mourn his passing are is wife Audrey; one daughter, Mrs. Bill Knizley and son-in-law, Bill  Knizley;  two granddaughters, Linda and Patty;  his aged mother Mrs. Rose Zetta Phipps; one sister Miss Jessie Phipps all of Shambaugh; one brother Willie Phipps of Clarinda;  many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. 

“There is a vacancy in our circle,

A loved on has been taken away: 

The place that he filled for years

Stands empty and silent today

The trials of his life are all over

No more cares or worries or pain;

He has gone to a place of contentment

Where rest and peace ever reign”

Funeral service was conducted from the Walker Funeral home at 2 Pm Wednesday, January 14, with the Rev T Fessler officiating.  Soloist was Horace Richardson who sand “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Beyond the Sunset.”  Organist  was Mrs. Grace Perry.  The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Mary Dunn and Rocene Guenther.  Casket bearers were E H Meyer, Melvin Cabbage, Fred Knizley, Rex Laub, Harold Hatfield, and Paul Steeve.  Interment was in the Butler Cemetery.
