Enos William Butler

Enos William Butler, son of Christina and Thomas Butler, was born in Page county, Iowa January 9, 1860 and departed this life March 16, 1945, having reached the advance age of 85 years. 

On March 17, 1887, he was married to Temperance Heidelbaugh.  Four children were born to this union: Edna, Esty, Ethel and one child who died in infancy.  His companion passed away July 25, 1903.

He was married to Florence Ratekin June 22, 1905.  This union was blessed with one sone, Dean Butler, and his wife’s daughter and son, Bula and Ralph.  Again death visited the home in 1923 when his wife was called to her reward.

After the home was broken, Mr. Butler lived with his children and other close relatives.  With the exception of a few years his entire life was lived in or near Page County, Iowa.

Those left to cherish his memory are is daughters, Mrs. Edna Lewis, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Mrs. Esty Andrews, grant City, Missouri, Mrs. S. Y McCune, Clarinda, Iowa, Bula Ratekin, Council Bluffs, Iowa, his sons, Dean Butler, Olympia, Washington, Ralph Ratekin, Bedford, Iowa; his sisters, Mrs. Jane Beery, Shambaugh, Iowa, Mrs. Callie Bolen, Lincoln, Nebraska, Mrs. Charley Andrews, Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Mrs. Agnes Davis, New Lisbon, Wisconsin.  Thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild have lost a grandfather who truly loved them all.  Six grandsons are serving their country.

Pall bearers were Glenn Beery, Jennings Beery, Carl Winger, Harold McCune, Robert Ratekin, and Charles Beery.  Interment was in the Butler Cemetery.

 

Blank, Michael Lloyd -

Michael Lloyd Blank, 35, completed this portion of his life's journey February 28, 1996. A remembrance celebration will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, in the Myrtle Fillmore Chapel at Unity Temple on the Plaza. Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Project.

Michael peacefully crossed the river of life from his home, while loved ones and family gathered and sang songs to help lift his spirit on its way. He was baptized a Methodist as an infant in Westminster, CO, and died a Buddhist.

His companion performed the Tibetan essential phowa at his bedside. What remained of his mortal body following his fight against AIDS was consumed by fire and the ashes will be returned to Gaia, the mother earth. Michael was born in Clarinda, IA, January 6, 1961, and moved to Kansas City in 1979.

He graduated from Richmond, MO, High School and studied at UMKC Nursing School. He was known for his magic with plants and all living things. His garden, like Michael, was a place of vigor, vitality, peace and joy. The Faeries called him Flora, his companion Fauna. In the past few years, Michael taught himself to paint beautifully, and his art will be displayed at his remembrance ceremony. Michael was active in several social organizations, including the Gay and Lesbian Outdoor Club, the Midwest Men's Festival, and Naturally Gay.

He was preceded in death by his father Lowell Blank. Michael is survived by his companion of 14 years, T. David Sharp, of the home; his mother, Martha Addington, Richmond, MO; his sister, Terrell Blackbear, Wichita, KS; his brother, David Blank, Kansas City, KS; his stepfather, Harold Addington, Richmond, MO; his step-brother, Dan Addington, Chicago, IL; and the many friends and loved ones who are his extended family.

Blank, Michael L.
Michael Lloyd Blank, 35 of Kansas City, Mo., died Feb. 28, 1996, at his home, following a long illness.
He was born Jan.6, 1961 in Clarinda to Lowell and Martha (Chase) Blank. He was raised in rural Iowa until he moved with his family to Richmond, Mo., in 1971. He graduated from Richmond High School in 1979.
Blank went to college in Kansas City for two years, as a nursing student.
He worked at Truman Medical Center for several years in the nursery.
He became interested in flowers and yard work for plant care companies and was an organic gardener for many years.
Blank is survived by his mother, Martha Addington, Richmond; brother, David, Kansas City; sister, Terrell Blackbear, Wichita, Ks.; grandmother, Marjorie Chase, New Market; stepfather, Harold Addington; stepbrothers Dan Addington, Chicago, D.; aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Gates, Paul N. -

Paul N. Gates

Paul Nixon Gates, 90, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Wesley Willows Health Care in Rockford, Illinois.

Born June 22, 1913, in Braddyville, Iowa, he was the son of Glen and Zelah (Nixon) Gates.  He was united in marriage to Thelma Pauline Godfrey on April 14, 1934 in Rockport. Missouri; they spent the next 70 happy years of their lives together.  They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past April.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

Paul was a 1930 graduate of Clearmont (Mo.) High School.  He then attended Iowa State University.  As a result of bank failures during the Depression, he worked odd jobs and graduated from Maryville Teachers College in Maryville, Missouri.  Paul’s first job after graduating from college was teaching sixth grade and coaching the boys’ high school basketball team in Clearmont.  He began working the DeKalb Ag Seed Corn Company in Shenandoah, Iowa, and was transferred to its plant in Waterman, Illinois, in 1957 as a plant manager.  Paul enjoyed his years with DeKalb Ag, worth for Tom Roberts, with the local farming community and with residents of Waterman.  He retired from the Ag in 1972.  Paul was an active member of both the Waterman Lions Club and the Waterman United Methodist Church.  Paul and Pauline moved to Wesley Willows in April 2003.

He loved to tend his garden, fish with the neighbors and his relatives in northern Wisconsin, and travel with his wife, Pauline.  They enjoyed the winter months in their home in West Palm Beach, Florida for more than 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Gates of Rockford; two daughters Paula (David) Ryg of Roscoe and Jane Gates of Saginaw, Michigan; five grandchildren Linda (Imad) Darwisch of East Brunswick, New Jersey, D. Rodney Gates of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Debbi Gates of Morgan Hill, California, Laurie Ryg of DeKalb, and July Ryg of Englewood, Colorado; two great grandchildren, Jamila and Farris Darwisch of East Brunswick, New Jersey; two sisters-in-laws Doris Koger of Clearmont, Missouri, and Bea Gates of Shenandoah, Iowa; and numerous nieces and Nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Zelah Gates; a son Rodney Gates, in 1976; a grandson, Paul Gates; a brother Norris Gates; and a sister Esther Gueist.

The family would like to thank Dr. Rogers for his care and to extend a special thank you to the nurses, CNAs, and staff who worked on or supported the E-Wing at Wesley Willows.  They also thank the Rev. Mindrup and the Rev. Ketzel for their visits with Paul, who appreciated everything these people did for him in the past year.

In a remembrance book that he completed a few years ago, Paul recorded the following: “If you tell my grandchildren one thing about me, I’d like it to be how much I lived all of you and how happy I am with all of your accomplishments.”

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Paul’s names can be made to Waterman United Methodist Church or the Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Willows Health Center in Rockford.

 The memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday May 26, at Wesley Willows  Health Care Center in Rockford, with the Rev. James Ketzel and the Rev. Stephen Mindrup officiating.  A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. at North Clinton Cemetery in Waterman.

Gates, Pauline Griffey -

Pauline (Griffey) Gates

Pauline Gates, 91, of Rockford, Illinois, formerly of Waterman, passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at Wesley Willows Health Center in Rockford.

Born January 14, 1913 in Burlington Junction, Missouri, she was the daughter of Fred and Blanche (Plummer) Griffey.  Pauline was united in marriage to Paul Nixon Gates on April 14, 1934 in Rockport, Missouri; they spent the next 70 years together until his passing on May 23, 2004.

Mrs. Gates was a active member of the Waterman United Methodist Church and belonged to several of its organizations.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt who will be missed by her family and many friends.  Pauline had great success growing roses and always had a rose garden on the south side of her home.  Her favorite saying was always “Do your best and let the Almighty do the rest.”  Pauline wished for the future was success and happiness for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren

She is survived by two daughters, Paula (David) Ryg of Roscoe and Jane Gates of Saginaw, Michigan; five grand children, Linda (Imad) Darwish of East Brunswick, New Jersey, Dr. Rodney Gates of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Debbie Gates of Morgan Hill, California, Laurie Ryg of DeKalb, and Julie Ryg of Eglewood, Colorado; two great grandchildren, Jamilla and Farris Darwish of East Brunswick, New Jersey; a sister Doris Koger of Clearmont, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Bea Gates of Shenandoah, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Blanche Griffey; her husband, Paul Nixon Gates; a son Ronald Gates in 1976; and a grandson, Gregory Paul Gates.

The funeral service for Mrs. Gates will be held at 2 pm Saturday, August 21 at Waterman United Methodist Church, with Rev James Ketzel officiating.  Interment will follow at North Clinton Cemetery in Waterman.  Friends may call from 1 to 2 pm Saturday at the church.  Arrangements are by Nelson Funeral Homes.  

 

Gordon, Earl M. -

Earl M. Gordon
June 16, 1920 - Oct 13, 2000

Earl McKean Gordon, Jr, 80 of Henderson, died Oct 13, at West Tennessee Skilled Nursing in Jackson.  Memorial services were October 15 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Henderson with Brother Mike Ulmer officiating.  His remains were cremated. Casey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gordon was born in Rochester, Minnesota, and reared in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Earl Gordon, Sr. and Madeline Van Dusen Gordon.  He attended schools in Iowa and completed two years of business college.  He was a general bookkeeper.  He married Alice Marie Hamm in 1982 and they made their home in Arkansas until 1984 when they moved to Arizona.  In 1997 they moved to Texas and later to Tennessee.  He was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Marie Hamm Gordon, a stepdaughter Janet L. Allen of Pinson; two stepsons Jimmie G. Snodderly, Texas, and Stephen M. Snodderly of Oregon, nine step grandchildren and several step great grandchildren. 

 

Hall, Harry C. -

Harry C Hall

Harry Claude Hall, son of Harrison and Isabelle Hall was born in Page County, Iowa, January 12, 1882 and died at his home in Clarinda, Iowa, February 28, 1955, at the age of 73 years, one month and 16 days.

He was never married so made his home with his parents.  After his father died he continued to care for his mother until her passing.  All his life was spent in the county of his birth, except for four years spent in the (Unreadable).  He was a farmer by occupation. 

He leaves to mourn his passing three brothers, James of New Market, Frank and Don of Leadora, Missouri.; also a number of nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services were conducted at Walker Funeral Home at 10 am Saturday, Saturday, Mar 5, 1955 with the Rev I. E. Stickelman in charge.  Pianist was Althea Hutchings.  Casket bearers were Hal Wamsley, Dick McKinnon, Don Hartman, Ray Morley, Orville Ferguson, and Ray Schenek.  Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

 

Hamm, Elizabeth Heidelbaugh -

Elizabeth Heidelbaugh Hamm was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, January 27, 1830, and died of apoplexy at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Kunkel, at Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, February 19, 1922, aged 92 years and 23 days. 

She was married to Christian Hamm, September 12, 1847, and to this union eight children were born who survive their mother.  They are Mrs. Catherine Beery of Cambridge, Nebraska, Mrs. Sara Kunkel of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Jacob, Jess, Ellis, and C. A. Hamm of Shambaugh, David Hamm of Clarinda, and Mrs. Belle Woodruff of Los Angeles, California.  Two sisters Mrs. Susan Black and Mrs. Catherine Harper of Mr. Pleasant, Iowa, also survive her. 

Mr. and Mrs. Hamm came to Page County, Iowa in 1863 and have lived in Shambaugh and vicinity ever since.  Mr. Hamm passed away in April 1898, in Shambaugh.  She, with her husband, was converted under the labors of Rev. A. Wilson in February 1874, and united with the Church of God.  She has remained a faithful and consistent member and very firm in her belief in the in distinctive doctrines of the Church of God.  She will be missed by the church as well by her relatives and friends.

The funeral of Grandma Hamm was held Thursday, February 23, at 2 pm at the Church of God Bethel at Shambaugh, conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. W. Cabbage, who also officiated at the funeral of her husband twenty-four years ago.  Interment was the Butler Cemetery.

 

Hamm, Ralph -

Relatives Learn of Death

Mrs. Bill Knizley received work of the death of her uncle, Ralph Hamm, 94 who died February 10, 1986 in a hospital in Aurora, Missouri.

He was born in Page County in 1891, the son of Charlie and Charlotte (Woodruff) Hamm.  He lived on a farm near Shambaugh until a few years ago when he moved to Aurora to near his son.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; son Stanley and his wife, Linda; two grandsons; a step-son, Gordon Powell of Fresno, California.

He was preceded in death by his five brothers and sisters.

Funeral  services and burial were at Aurora this Thursday

 

Hatfield, Fern E. Greenlee -

Fern E. Hatfield

Mrs. Fern E. Hatfield, 81, of Clarinda, died Tuesday night at the home of her daughter, Barbara Reese, where she had been cared for the past weeks.

She was born July 23, 1909, at Bedford, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Sylvia Henshaw Greenlee.

On March 8, 1927, she was married to Harold Hatfield, who preceded her in death November 2, 1971.  After Mr. Hatfield’s death she moved from the rural home in Clarinda.

Survivors include three children, Mrs. Estel (Phyllis) Combs, New Market, Iowa, Norman Hatfield, Rogers, Arizona, and Mrs. Ronald (Barbara) Reese, Clarinda, Iowa.  There are also seven grandchildren and then great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents, husband, seven sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am, Saturday at Trinity Presbyterian Church with Rev. Charles Bulger officiating. There is open visitation at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

 

Hay, Phoebe Alkire

Phoebe Alkire

Phoebe Alkire was born September 27, 1829 in Ohio.  She was united in marriage to John F. Hay, October 30, 1852, in Ohio and came to Wapello County, Iowa, in 1854.  Afterwards they moved to Union county and in 1879 moved to Page County where they have since lived. 

For the past twenty years Mr. and Mrs. Hay have lived in Shambaugh.  To their union were born nine children, of which only five girls survived, three dying in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Bird Humphrey dying three years ago. 

When quite young, Mrs. Alkire was converted and united with the Baptist church and has been an earnest Christian ever since.  She was a kind friend and a loving neighbor, but owing to her deafness she always remained near her home. 

During her illness she was patient and kind, and the Death angel called her home March 16, 1907, and at the time of her death she was 77 years, 5 months, and 19 days old. 

She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband, one sister and five daughters, Mrs. Susan Pierson of Shenandoah, Mrs. Mary Kelley of East River,  Mrs. Martha Trullinger of Clarke, Nebraska, Mrs. Lilly Harper of Clarinda, and Mrs. Lue Mulkins of east River, and a host of friends.

At the time of her illness she was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Issac Mulkins.  The funeral services here held at the Baptist Church in Clarinda, conducted by the pastor W. H. Stickel.  Grandma Hay was laid to rest in the Clarinda cemetery among flowers and many sympathizing friends.

Phebe Alkire was born in Ohio Sept. 29, 1829. She was united in marriage to John F. Hay, Oct. 30, 1852. In 1854 she and her husband moved to Wapello county, la. Afterwards they moved to Union county and in 1856 moved to Page county where they have since lived. To this union were born nine children, of whom only five girls survive. She united with the Baptist church when but a young girl. For the past twenty years Mr. and Mrs. Hay have lived in Shambaugh where she was known by everybody. She was a kind friend and a loving neighbor, and made it her aim in life to follow the Golden Rule. During her sickness she was always patient and kind. She was at the home of one of her daughters, Mrs Isaac Mulkins, when on March 16, 1907, the Death Angel called her home, at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 19 days. POSTON, Patricia Ann, 74, Homemaker, born July 5, 1929 in Tulsa, OK to Vernon V. and Opal Earl (Winsor) Davison; passed from this life November 10, 2003 in Tulsa. Preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon V. Davison and husband, Raymond L. Poston. Survived by daughter, Kelly Antle and husband, Rick of Claremore, OK; sons, Mike Poston and wife, Peggy of Sapulpa, OK, Dale Poston and wife, Debra of Mounds, OK; 9 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Service 10 a.m. Thursday, November 13, 2003 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Squier, Bette Erickson -

Squier Betty (Erickson)

Squier, Bette Nee Erickson. Age 91, formerly of Oswego, died Sunday, June 5, 2011 at her home in Montgomery. Bette was born August 21, 1919 in Aurora, IL. to Elmer Edward and Harriet Mae (Carr) Erickson.

An only child, Bette grew up on a farm in the Little Rock area and graduated from Plano High school in 1937. She attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College (now Northern Illinois University) in DeKalb, and graduated in 1941 with a degree in elementary education. Bette taught in schools in Champaign, IL, and Aurora, IL., and was a 1st grade teacher at East View Elementary in Oswego for 15 years until she retired in 1981.

Bette met her husband Herbert of Shambaugh, Iowa, in Champaign, IL in 1942 at a USO dance. Following the war, they married July 25, 1945 in Aurora. She was married to Herb for 52 years until his passing in 1997. Bette was a resident of the Oswego area for 41 years, moving to Boulder Hill in 2001.

Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, crocheting, gardening, and reading. She also enjoyed garage saling with her cousin Mildred. Bette was a member of the 19th Century Club of Oswego, Kendall County Retired Teachers, Friendly Neighbors, Prairie Point Quilt Guild, a 50 year member of Lorraine Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Rebecca Circle of the Oswego Presbyterian Church, American Association of University Women, and the Methodist Church 20-Up Club in Aurora. She taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for Oswego Presbyterian Church. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother in Pack 363 for both her sons.

Survivors include sons Steven (Renée) Squier of Rockford, IL; Dale (Cindy) Squier of Oswego, IL; grandchildren Steve (Connie) of DeKalb, IL; Erik (Heather) of Costa Mesa, CA; Mark of Oswego; Ashley of Mesa, AZ ; and great granddaughter Maggie of DeKalb.

Bette was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Squier, and parents Elmer Edward and Harriet Mae (Carr) Erickson.

Her family would like to thank Hope Home Health Care and Provena Hospice for their services. Special thanks are extended to her long time caregiver Regina for her compassion and care, allowing Bette to remain comfortable at home until her passing. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, Friday June 10, 2011 with memorial service at 7:00 pm at McKeown-Dunn Funeral Home Ltd., 210 S. Madison St., Oswego. Interment will take place at Oswego Township cemetery at a private ceremony.

 

Vanderbur, Angeline E. -

ANGELINE E. VANDERBUR
Mrs. Vanderbur, 91, a former Colorado Springs resident, died Jan. 29, 2001, in Littleton. She was a retired pianist.
Mrs. Vanderbur was born May 5, 1909, in Blockton, Iowa, to Jesse and Bertha (Shapley) Wintermute, who are deceased. She was married Aug. 5, 1930, to Dale Vanderbur, who is deceased.
She is survived by two sons, Willard and Wayne; a brother, Hampton Wintermute; a sister, Gertrude Livingston; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister,
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave., 471-9900. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m Thursday at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 3825 Airport Road.

Woodruff, Leonard J. -

Leonard J. Woodruff
Oklahoma

Rites for Leonard J. Woodruff, 72-year-old oil man and rancher who died at his home here Monday after an illness of several months, are to held in Harvey Chapel under the direction of Rev. J. R. Welch of the First Free Will Baptist Church.  Burial will be at Rose Hill.

Pall bearers include Joyce Coffee, Paul Frame, Roy Johnson, Louie Bastin, R. S. Gardenhire, Jr., and Frank Anderson.

Woodruff, a native of Iowa, was born January 8, 1887.  He came here from Iowa in 1909.

Surviving are his wife, Willie Mae, of the home; two sons, Howard L. and Leonard Jr.; a daughter, Mrs. Marguerite Piers, Los Angeles; his mother Mrs. Ida Belle Woodruff, one brother Herman C. Woodruff of Duncan, and seven grandchildren.

A longtime friend Paul Metcalf, arrived last night by plane from Los Angeles, and expected in today is a cousin, Audrey Phipps, Shambaugh, Iowa.

 

Woodruff, Nehemiah -

Nehemiah Woodruff

Nehemiah Woodruff was born in Knox County, Ohio, November 3, 1833; died December 4, 1920, age 87 years, 1 month, and 1 day.  He was one of the family of ten children.  Four sister still survive him: Eliza Fox and Cassie Sovercong fo Franklin Grove, Illinois, and Elizabeth McKean and Martha Posten, Tama, Iowa.  Their parents Joseph and Rhoda (Young) Woodruff, were both natives of Pennsylvania.  They lived some time in Ohio, but spent the last days in Illinois. 

In early boyhood Nehemiah accompanied his parents on their removal from Knox County, Ohio to Delaware county, Ohio, then when the family went to Olge County, Illinois.  Here resided until after his marriage to Miss Emma Jones  on September 20, 1854, who died July 29, 1913. 

To this union were born ten children, Joseph of Staunton, Oklahoma; Rosa Colvin of Kansas City, Missouri; ; Edward of Los Angeles, California; David of Sacramento, California; Walter of Harrison, Nebraska; Martha Bonsall, deceased; infant son, deceased; Charles and Fred, Shambaugh; and Mrs. Lottie Hamm at whose house Mr. Woodruff died.  There are forty grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. 

Mr. Woodruff moved to Iowa in 1859, where he has since made his home.

In May 14, 1861, he enlisted in Company F, Fifth Iowa Volunteer infantry, serving til the fall of 1863, when he was honorably discharged. 

Mr. Woodruff never affiliated with any church.  His views on Christianity were liberal, he regarded all mankind as his brothers and sisters.  In the last years of his life, he often remarked that he hand on ill feeling against any, and felt no displeasure resting on him.  He bore his affliction with courage, never complaining.  He was always a kind and loving father and husband.  During the last week of his life he was bedfast, waiting tile the summons of death. 

Mr. Woodruff's funeral was held at the Church of God church on Tuesday, December 7, at 2:30 pm, conducted by Reverend J. W. Cabbage, assisted by Rev E. A. Ollie was born Dec 13, 1880 in Guthrie County, Iowa and entered into rest on November 9, 1975 at Clarinda, Iowa.  The services were at the Church of God in Shambaugh, Iowa on Tuesday, November 11, 1975 at 2:00 pm.  The Clergymen were Rev. Ray Draper and Rev. Robert Bartlett.  The Organist was Velma Linke and soloist was Margaret Draper.  Verna Hughes was in charge of the register.

Casket bearers were Randy Parrott, Dennis Parrott, Richard Meyer, Terry Parrott, Randy Meyer, and Dennis Haley.  Honorary Bearers were Orval Cabbage, Paul Mason, Ernest Winger, Melvin Cabbage, Edward Guthrie, and Lester Walker. 

Flower Bearers were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Geer and Mrs. and Mrs. Charlie Geer.  The ushers were Leo Milller and Carmen Clement. 

Her final resting place was Butler Cemetery in Shambaugh, Iowa.

 

Showalter, Mabel B. (Davison)

Mabel B. Showalter, 86, of Wenatchee, died Friday evening, March 3, 1989, in Parkside Manor Convalescent Center. She was born Oct. 14, 1902, at New Market, Iowa, to Isaac and Martha (Hicks) Davison (sic). She spent her early years there where she attended schools.
She married Loyd (sic) C. Showalter on Sept. 17, 1924, at Clarinda, Iowa, and they lived in Iowa until 1928 when they moved to Wenatchee, making their home at Squilchuck. Mr. Showalter died in 1963.
Mrs. Showalter was seasonally employed for 15 tears with Witte's Warehouse until her retirement in 1980. She was an active member of the Squlchuck Service Club.
Survivors include a son, Donald, of Carson City, Nev,; five daughters, Gloria Hensley of Wenatchee, Harriet Smith of East Wenatchee, Marian Saddler of Coueur d'Alene, Margaret Lary of Littlerock, Calif., and Linda Showalter of Oregon; a sister Blanche Wilcox of Denver; 21 grandchildren; and 19 great- grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, a grandson, three brothers and five sisters.
Services will be conducted Wednesday, 2:00 p. m., from the Betta Memorial Chapel with Chaplain James Caulkins officiating.
Private interment will be in the Sunnyslope Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday until 8;30 p.m. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Arrangements by Betta Funeral Home.

 

Dorothy Lucille (Allison) Harms

Dorothy Harms, 84, was warmly welcomed into the arms of the Lord on August 30, 2011. Dorothy was born in Gant, Iowa, to Mary and Lawrence Allison. She was married to Carl D. Harms. They had two rowdy sons together, Kenneth and James.

Dorothy enjoyed family and wanted to be near her grandkids, so she and Carl moved from Clarinda, Iowa, to Bellingham, WA, in the late 1980's. Dorothy was a wholesome woman who treasured her relationship with the Lord and enjoyed regularly attending church. She was involved with the Quilting Ladies at Redeemer Lutheran Church and made several beautiful quilts for her family and others.

In her youth, Dorothy held various positions such as a housekeeper for Clarinda Municipal Hospital, a waitress, a production worker at a hair curler factory, and in electrical component manufacturing at Kearney Corporation. Plants, vegetable and floral alike, flourished under her green thumb; her favorite flowers were peony roses. Dorothy's voracious love of reading spread to her eldest granddaughter and her two children. Many summer afternoons were spent on the patio with her granddaughters shelling peas, shucking corn, and having apples stolen from the enamel bowl by her youngest granddaughter.

Her husband, Carl, and her younger son, James, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her older son, Kenneth, and his wife, Elizabeth; her six grandchildren, Tammy, Little James, Carl, Serena, Tiffany, and Amber; her three great grandchildren, Montgomery, Luisa, and Lilliana; her sister, Marjorie; and her brother, J.D.  Her smile and her love will be greatly missed, yet cherished in our hearts, for we are the ones blessed to have loved her.

Bingham, Virginia Lee
Virginia Lee Bingham was born to William "Bill" and Tina Marie (Hargis) Wilcox on Aug. 25, 1925 in Clarinda, Iowa. She passed away on Oct. 27, 2001 at her home in Mancos. Virginia was 76 years old.
On Dec. 1, 1943 in Portland, Ore., Virginia married Marvin "Dutch" Bingham. In 1969 Dutch and Virginia Bingham moved to the Mancos Valley. She was a devoted sports fan, especially to the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and the Denver Broncos. She also was a loving mother and grandmother to her five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Virginia is survived by her two children, Terry and Christie Bingham of New Castle, Colo. and Kelly Bingham of Mancos; her grandchildren, Cully Bingham of Andrews, Texas, Thad and Barb Bingham of Fruita, Colo., Britt (Bingham) and Doug Choate of Rifle, Colo., and Matt and Ryan Bingham of Mancos; and one great-grandchild, Tommy Bingham. One sister, Wanda June Ross of Bedford, Iowa and numerous nephews and nieces also survive Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dutch; her parents, two sisters, and one brother.

Crowdes, Rex L.

Rex L. Crowdes of Rockford died November 10, 2007.  Born May 5, 1935 in Burlington Junction, MO to Frank and Lydia Crowdes: he was the youngest of thirteen children.  Rex was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the US Navy from 1952-1956. Married Ruth Jogerst in Las Vegas, NV in 1956. He belonged to Sheet Metal Local 219 since 1961, retiring in 2000. Member of Collide-O-Scopes square dance club, American Legion 332 in Rockton and now an Organ Donor.  Survivors include wife Ruth; daughters, LeeAnn Crowdes of Cherry Valley and Colleen Crowdes of Rockford;  one beloved granddaughter, Sydney Crowdes of Rockford;  brother, Monty;  sister, Virginia both of Missouri;  and several nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by parents, 10 brothers and sisters and his nephew and best friend, Roland.   Funeral services at 10:30 am, Thursday, November 15, 2007 in Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Max Snodderly dies; Services Wednesday

Service for Max Snodderly, 64, Lebanon, Mo, a former Nebraska City resident and businessman, will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m., at Colonial Chapel Mortuary in Lebanon.  The Rev. Bryon Gilbreath, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Lebanon will officiate at all of the services.

Graveside service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m., at Maple Hill Cemetery at College Springs, Iowa.

The family suggests memorials to the Cancer Society.

Max Snodderly was born on February 22, 1915, at College Springs, Iowa, the son of Mr.  & Mrs. Glen O. (Eunice Coler) Snodderly.  He and Alice Hamm were married on September 29, 1935.

Mr. Snodderly had lived in College Springs and Clarinda, Iowa before moving to Nebraska City.  The family moved to Lebanon, MO., from Nebraska City approximately 10 years ago.  He had operated the Snodderly Garage in College Springs; the Snodderly Motors Inc. at Clarinda, and was service manager for Haley's Chevrolet-Cadillac Garage in Nebraska City.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church while living in Nebraska City and in Lebanon.  He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a delegate to Abou Ben Addem Temple of the Shrine at Springfield, Missouri.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, Lebanon, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Janet Lee Vaccaro, East Alton Ill.; two sons, Jim of Odessa, Texas and Stephen Snodderly, Omaha; six grandchildren and a brother, Rex, Nebraska City.

His parents preceded him in death.

Wednesday Funeral for L D Hamm, 81

Funeral services for L D (Jim) Hamm, 81, of Clarinda will be held at 2 Pm Wednesday at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church with Dr. J D. Almes officiating, burial to be in the Clarinda Cemetery.  He died Sunday at 2:25 pm at his home in Clarinda.

He was born December 3, 1888 at Shambaugh, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hamm.  He was married to Lydia Huddle on December, 26, 1910 at St. Joseph, Missouri.

A farmer and carpenter by trade, he spent his entire life in the Shambaugh and Clarinda vicinity.  In 1951 he retired from farming and moved to Clarinda.  He was a member of the Trinity United Presbyterian Church.

Hamm is survived by his wife, Lydia, two daughters, Mrs. Max (Alice) Snodderly of Nebraska City, Mrs. Norris (Beulah) Gates of Shenandoah; two sons, Clifford of Shenandoah and Arlo of Clarinda.  He has nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Irvin, of Clarinda.  He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother and a granddaughter.

The family requests memorials be made to the cancer fund and be left at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 pm at the Lavelle Funeral Home on Tuesday.  The body will lie in state from noon Wednesday until service hour at the Church.

Jaunita (Pullen) Crabtree

Juanita Crabtree, 88, of Kansas City, MO passed away August 29, 2011.

Juanita was born in Clarinda, Iowa on March 10, 1923 to Allie and Edna (Royer) Pullen. She was retired from the North Kansas City School District, and had worked earlier at Pierce and Dunn in Clarinda. She was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband of 46 years, Winston Clifford Crabtree, and a granddaughter, Michaela Jo Walters. Survivors include her son and daughter in law, Larry and Joyce Niblock, daughters and sons in law, Marsha and Harold Stewart, Debbie and Galen Walters, Robin and Tim Motko, brother and sister in law, Lowell and Gloria Pullen, 9 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren.

Freemyer, Truman O. -

Truman Orval Freemyer, son of Joshua Roland Freemyer and Zola (Campbell) Freemyer, was born on December 4, 1916, at Athelstan, Iowa. He passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at the Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa, at the age of 91.

His early life was spent in the Athelstan and Conway, Iowa areas. Truman received his education in the Conway School System. Following school, he worked as a general farm hand in the Conway and Bedford area. While in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camps, he helped build the Lake of Three Fires near Bedford. After World War II broke out, Truman enlisted in the U. S. Army in March of 1941. Some of the battles he fought in included the Normandy, North France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Sicilian and Belgium campaigns. His specialty was as a pump operator. He received his honorable discharge from the Army on October 18, 1945. At the time he was discharged he was a Technician Fifth Grade in the HQ Co. 22nd Armed Engineers.

On August 24, 1949, Truman was united in marriage to Alice Mae Philbrick in Maryville, Missouri. To this union three children were born, Duane Truman, Shirley Rose and Annette Renee. Following their marriage they made their home in Diagonal, Iowa. Truman continued to work as a farmhand and from 1954 to 1963 he worked in the Coin and Randolph, Iowa area. From 1963 to 1969 he was a farmhand in Shenandoah before moving to Farragut where he continued as a farmhand until 1981 when he retired from farming. Following his retirement he worked for the City of Farragut part-time. Truman enjoyed “tinkering” with machinery, loved fixing things with his pliers, putting together puzzles and playing Dominos.

Preceding Truman in death were his parents; wife, Alice Mae; two sisters, Agnes Elaine Freemyer and Louise Lela Besco; brother, Leo Bently Freemyer; and daughter-in-law, Eileen Ann Freemyer. Survivors include his three children, Duane Freemyer of Kemmerer, WY, Shirley Good and her husband Michael G. of Farragut, IA, and Annette Croll and her husband Joseph L. of Shenandoah, IA; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Elmer Freemyer and his wife Kathryn of Ft. Laramie, WY; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services were held on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. from the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home. Words of Comfort were given by Pastor Fred Bryson. Organist was Terry Stafford. Mike Good sang "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" and "In The Garden". Valerie, Brenton, and Whitney Croll sang "These Hands". In charge of the Memory Register was Marilyn Phipps. Casket Bearers were Suzanne Nardi, David Good, Amy Freemyer, Hanna Freemyer, Molly Freemyer, Valerie Croll, Brenton Croll, and Whitney Croll. Military rites were accorded by the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88. Interment was in Farragut Cemetery. Memorials in Truman's name are being directed to the Alzheimer's Association

 

Squier, Donald

Don Squier, 75, of Braddyville, died Wednesday afternoon (Sept 30, 1987) in Omaha, Nebraska, following a brief illness.

He was born September 9, 1912 in Page County near Shambaugh, to Ellsworth and Avis Hamm Squier.  The family lived in Villisca and Don attended school there then later graduated from Lenox College in Hopkinton, where he receive a teaching certificate.  He was employed by the telephone company, and in later years, lived in the College Springs, Shambaugh, and Braddyville areas when engage in farming and cattle raising.

While living in Montgomery County, he married Lenore Taylor of Grant, who preceded him in death in 1961.

He parent also preceded him in death.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manchester, and a member of the Nodaway Lodge No. 140 A. F. and A. M. and Royal Arch Masons of Clarinda.  He also served as mayor of Shambaugh and clerk of the drainage district.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Ed Reynolds (Dorothy) and husband of Villisca; and a brother, Herbert S. Squier and wife and their sons, all of Oswego, Illinois area; also many local cousins and other relatives.

He was an avid conservationist and preservationist with great respect for wildlife, humanity and earth sciences.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm this Saturday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda with Rev John Clark in Charge.  The Masonic Lodge will conduct gravesides services at Butler Cemetery where burial will be held.

Woodruff, Ross

Ross LaVinus Woodruff, 71, of Prescott Valley, died Sunday, December 5, 1999, in Prescott Valley.

He was born April 16, 1928 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Ross and Lois (Eld) Woodruff.

Mr. Woodruff had been an Arizona resident for 45 years.  On December 27, 1974, he married Helen Francis Sitton in Phoenix.

He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Prescott Valley, and enjoyed teaching bible classes at God’s World in Prescott Valley.  During his missionary career he pastured numerous churches in Missouri, Kansas, New Mexico and Arizona.  In 1980 he was adopted into the Manygoats clan of the Navajo Nation.  He had been a missionary with Native American Indians for 49 years in Arizona and New Mexico.

Mr. Woodruff was a chaplain with the Civil Air Patrol and a volunteer chaplain at Yavapai Regional Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Prescott.  He was also founder and president of Harvest Fields radio ministry.  He felt priviledged to have taught at all the colleges and universities that he had attended during his educational pursuits.

He is survived by his his wife Helen; son Ross, Jr. of Scottsdale; daughters Debbie Kay of Avondale, Robin Pfaff of Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Laura Pendrick of San Clemente, California; 14 grand children and one great great child.

Visitation will be at 1 pm Thursday at Sunrise Funeral Home in Prescott Valley, with a funeral service following at 2 pm.  Pastor Murray Hardy, Jr. will officate.

Interment will at Mountain View Cemetery in Prescott.

Sharon Kay Easter

GRANT CITY, Mo. — Sharon Kay Easter, 71, Grant City, died December 17, 2010 at her home.

She was born February 18, 1939, in New Market, Iowa.

She is survived by her mother, Verla (Peterman) Easter; and sister, Marilyn Tibbetts and husband, Bob, all of Grant City; niece, Kim Allgood and children, Robbie, Lindsey, and Cassidy Elson; and nephew, Rob Tibbetts and daughter, Jessie McNight Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, December 20, at the Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City.

Interment in the Old Memory Cemetery in New Market, Iowa. Open visitation after 8 a.m. Sunday.

Bette (Cross) Squires

CRESCO - Bette Squires, 82, of Cresco passed away on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco. No formal services will be held. Her final wishes were to be donated to medical science at the Mayo Clinic.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Bette Squires was born May 4, 1929 in Bedford, Iowa the daughter of Tom and Mable Cross. She attended Simpson College from 1947-1949 and later received her Bachelor's Degree at Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, Mo.

Bette married Ed Squires in 1950. They started their teaching career at Linden, Iowa. When her husband Ed enlisted in the Navy in 1951 she moved to Oregon where her husband was stationed. Bette taught in Astoria, Ore. for four years.

Bette and Ed moved to Cresco in 1955. She taught in the Howard-Winneshiek School District for 30 years.

She is survived by her many family and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ed; two sons: Stephen and Vincent; and her parents.

James Russell Woldruff

James Russell Woldruff, 87 years of age, died Tuesday, April 28, 1959 at 97 years of age at the West Portal Nursing Home in Clarinda.  Mr Woldruff been in failing health for several years.  He had lived nearly his entire life in and near Braddyville.  Rev Ralph Allen, pastor of the Christian Church, assisted by Rev. Everett Burnham, pastor of the Methodist Church officiated.  Interment was in Shearer Cemetery.  All of his life except four years spent in Colorado was spent in and around Braddyville.  He was a farmer and country blacksmith until his retirement several years ago.  On April 9, 1893 he was married to Amanda Florence Fine and to this union 13 children were born.  Mrs. Woldruff passed away July 3, 1935.  He was married March 10, 1937 to Wilma Foster.

Gladys Hamm

Miss Gladys Hamm, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Hamm, living east of Shambaugh, died at her home at 5 o’clock Tuesday morning.  Miss Hamm has been troubled with failing eye sight for about two years and during that time has been noticeably failing in health, but it was not thought that she was in any danger, and even after she was confined to her bed ten days ago, she only appeared to have become weak and even Doctor Mathews, of Clarinda, who had been treating her eyes and Doctor Clark, of Shambaugh, who was called this evening, advised that she spend as much time as possible out of bed.  Her family refused to entertain the thought that she was dangerously ill, but on Monday night of the wis week, she told them that she knew she could not live and late in the night called the family to her bedside and after making a few requests in regard to dispoal of her jewelry and other belongs, bade all good-bye.  Dr. Clark was called and remained at her bedside until 3 o’clock Wednesday morning.  At this time, Miss Hamm was seemingly sleeping and gradually sank away until at 5 o’clock she ceased to breath.  The cause of her death was given as tumor on some part of the brain, probably the optical nerve.  Miss Hamm was 22 years of age and loved by all who knew her

Wesley Slaight, 72, killed from blast in farm workshop.

Wesley Slaight, 72, was killed in an explosion at his home east of New Market Friday morning while welding in his shop. Funeral services were held this Monday at the Hamilton Memorial Missionary Church in Bedford with burial at Memory Cemetery at New Market.

The accident happened about 9 a.m. as Mr Slaight apparently began to weld in his shop. Taylor County Sheriff Leonard Ratliff reports that a spark from the welding apparently fell in a buck of potash and sugar under the work bench which had been used on the farm. The explosion knocked out the south side of the garage-shop and shattered the walk-in door, Sheriff Ratliff says. Debris was found 200 feet south of the garage. Pieces of shrapnel from a scoop shovel nearby were thrown through the north side and roof. A hole six inches deep and about a foot in diameter was blown in the dirt floor where the bucket had been sitting. Persons up to two miles from the farm home reported hearing the blast. Mr. Slaight was killed instantly from the concussion.

The Slaights had lived on the farm on the south side of Highway 2 for more than 25 years and had been in this area for 47 years. Mr. Slaight was born at Paola, Kan, the family moving to Canada when he was young. He served in the Canadian Army during World War I. He was married to Beulah Tally on March 8, 1921.

They have three children, Ralph of Council Bluffs, Harold of Lincoln and Elvin of Elkhart, Ind, and six grandchildren.

He was a member of the Hamilton Memorial Missionary Church in Bedford where serives were held, the Rev Walter Ortman officiating. Active pallbearers were Earl Wininger, Conner Tally, Herbert Tally, Melvin Tally, Jay Cunningham and Marshall Derry. Honorary bearers were James Pickrel, Albert Fickness, Nick Reavis, Harve Thompson, Herman O'Dell, Colburn Payne, Dewey Ferguson, Robert Hamilton.

Lena Debra Albertson was born in Hardin County, Iowa August 23, 1871, and departed this life near Bedford, Iowa, October 17, 1925, at the age of 54 years, 1 month and 24 days. She was united in marriage August 27, 1891 to George William Slaight, who preceded her in death March 30, 1925.

To this union were born 3 children Mrs. Blossom Brown of Langley Prairie, Canada; Ray and Wesley Slaight both of Bedford, Iowa. In the year 1902 Mrs. Slaight with her husband and family moved to Canada where they resided until 1919. Upon coming back she resided in Missouri the remainder of her life.

She leaves to mourn her loss her three children, three grandchildren, four brothers Arthur and Orin of Oregon; Calvin and Ernest of Kansas, besides many relatives and friends.

When just a small girl Mrs. Slaight gave her heart to God uniting with the Quaker church, later transferring her membership to the M. E. Church at New Market. Funeral services were held at the New Market Methodist Church, conducted by the Pastor, Rev. James Wilkins, after which interment was made in the Old Memory Cemetery.

Mrs. Tilda Whitehead services are Friday

Mrs. W. K (Tilda Ann) Whitehead died Wednesday, November 17, 1965, at the University Hospital in Iowa City where she had been a patient for several days.  Before going to Iowa City, she had been in the hospital at Maryville, Missouri.

The family home for many years had been at New Market, but for a few years, Mrs. Whitehead has been a patient at the Armstrong Nursing Home in Bedford.

Tilda Ann Bennett was born at Baleyton, green County, Tennessee, the daughter of Louis Bennett and Mary Britt Bennett.  She was the youngest of 11 children, all of whom have preceded her in death.

 It was in Tennessee that she attend school, graduated from high school and was baptized into the church.  In the year 1901 she was married to W K Whitehead who preceded her in death in 1924.  She moved with her family to Taylor County in 1909 where she had spent the rest of her life.

Mildred Pfeiffer
Mildred Ruth Pfeiffer, 79, of Dewey, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at Yavapai Regional Medical Center. She was born Aug. 26, 1920, in Clarinda, Iowa, to James Eldwin and Erma Lucille (Pruitt) Sawhill.
Mrs. Pfeiffer married Charles L. Pfeiffer June 11, 1939. Her life was devoted to her husband and her family. She worked for Lockheed during World War II, and helped her husband in his various businesses, which included a radio station and a brokerage firm. She and her husband lived in Newport Beach, Calif., for many years, to Bullhead City in 1970, and to Dewey in 1980.
Survivors include her husband, Charles; daughters, Janet King of Portland, Ore., and Charon Yancey of La Habra, Calif.; son, Lee of Glendale; sister, Jeanne Catania of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Faith United Community Church, 1065 Old Chisholm Trail, Dewey. Private cremation was at Bradshaw Crematory in Prescott Valley. Memorial contributions are suggested to Prescott Frontier Rotary Literacy Program, P.O. Box 1903, Prescott, AZ 86302. The Arizona Wakelin Bradshaw Chapel helped the family with arrangements.
