Clamor Henry Steeve. The subject of this short biography was one of the oldest inhabitants of Clarinda. He was born on May 3, 1840, in Heithoefen, Hanover, Germany, and died last Monday evening, Dec 18, 1922, at his home on East Tarkio street, at the advanced age of 82 years 7 months and 15 days.
In his early infancy he was baptized in the name of the triune God and later confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran church, and to his end remained a farm member thereof. The years of his youth were spent near the place of his birth. On Nov 24, 1861 he was united in marriage with Miss Maria Clara Hagedorn of Wimmer, Germany. This union was blessed with seven children of which six are surviving the father.
In the year 1880 he came to the United States and immediately to Page county, Iowa, which latter place there resembled the wild prairies of the West more than its own present high state of cultivation. Hardships, difficulties and disappointments were not missing. But since both Mr and Mrs Steeve were thrifty, hard working people they prospered in earthly means. Mr Steeve was of a strong physical condition, sickness being unknown to him until he was about 80 years old. His home, however, was not spared from sorrow and affliction. On April 20, 1909, his wife died who had been a faithful companion for many years. All of his children being of age, he withdrew from active farming and lived in Clarinda ever since. Aug 13, 1912, he was married again, to Mrs Augusta Bremer, with whom he lived very happy to his end.
It must also be stated that during his lingering illness--being sick in bed for over a year--he was always very patient and well contented, cheerfully hoping that Jesus, in whom he firmly believed, would soon deliver him from all evil.
Besides the sorrowing widow the following children survive: Ernest Steeve, Henry Steeve, Mrs Hy Wehmiller, Mrs William Salomon, who are all living at Clarinda; Fred Steeve and Mrs D. Hinkeldel of Alta, Iowa, besides sixteen, grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the church at 10 o'clock am at the home, and at 12 o'clock noon at the church, today, by the Rev T.J. Vogel who will be assisted by the Rev F.C. Israel of Immanuel's church.

Freudenburg, Herman Henry, passed away at the home of his son, H.H. Freudenburg Jr, Monday evening, June 6, his death coming rather unexpectedly. Rising in the morning as usual, up and about during the day he had, toward evening, seated himself in an armchair on the porch of the home where he passed away. Indeed
"The world that smiled when morn was come |
May change for me ere close of eve; |
So long as earth is still my home, |
In peril of my death I live." |
Mr Freudenburg, though hardly ever seriously ill during his long life, had been severely ill in late winter and early spring. He recovered, however, and it seemed as though it was the Lord's will to prolong his sojourn upon this earth for some time, as he gained rapidly after his recovery in spite of his old age. All the more unexpected, therefore, was his passing away.
Herman Henry Freudenburg was born Oct 25, 1840, in Epe, Hanover, Germany. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. In 1860 he was united in holy wedlock with Anna Henke. This union was blessed with nine children, five of whom preceded their father to eternity. In 1881 he came to this country with his family, locating in Page county, in the neighborhood of Clarinda. In 1910 his wife, died, leaving him a widower. He spent his last year with his children, Mrs Spangenberg at Yorktown and H.H. Freudenburg Jr north of Clarinda, at whose home he passed away.
Mr Freudenburg reached the ripe old age of 83 years 7 months and 12 days. He is survived by four children, three sons and one daughter, also 32 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 19, in Immanuel Lutheran church, after a brief service at the home, conducted by the pastor of the congregation, burial taking place in the church cemetery. --F.C. Israel.

Knost, Henry William, was born in Seymour, Jackson County, Indiana, January 12h, 1848, being a son of Henry Knost and his wife Engel nee Haberkette. In his early youth he became a member of God's family by being baptized in the Name of the Triune God. In the year 1860 he was confirmed in Seymour, Indiana by the Rev C. Werderstrom. The days of his youth were spent near the place of his birth. He was reared to the occupation of a farmer, and assisted in his father's store. For a while he was also operating a ferry-boat on the river.
However, for some time his great ambition was to westward, hoping that the West offered greater opportunites. In 1870 he bid farewell to his dear relatives in Indiana and followed a western course, yet did not reach the extreme West, but landed in Page County, Iowa and here he as made his home ever since. In those days Page County presented a different picture than today. The subject of our sketch directed his attention to farming, working the first few years by the month, breaking prairie land a portion of the time, and then he began active farming himself in Douglas and Nodaway Townships. And those who knew him well for many years considered him a successful agriculturist.
In the year 1874 Mr Knost was united in marriage to Mrs Mary Losetta Driftmier, widow of Henry Driftmier. This union was a happy one. Over fifty years he shared the joys and the sorrows of life with his faithful helpmate. Unto the children of Mrs Knost Mr Knost was not a "step-father" in the usual meaning of the term, but a kind father. In his own quiet, unassuming way he labored for what he considered right before his God. In 1892 he retired from active farming moving to Clarinda to live.
Mr Knost took an active part in church work for many years, being a life long member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was not a man of many words; he said but little, but what he said was worthy of consideration. He was a charter member of our St John's congregation and for many years one of the elders, one upon whose loyal support the pastor could always depend. He confessed his faith in Christ, the Redeemer to the very last, and peacefully fell asleep last Tuesday afternoon at 1:50 at the ripe old age of 79 years, 2 months and 24 days. His death is mourned by his wife Mrs Mary Knost and her sons John Driftmier and Ed Driftmier of this city, and Joseph Driftmier of Yakima, Washington, one brother in Indiana, besides many other relatives who will remember him in years to come.
The funeral service was conducted Thursday afternoon, two o'clock at the St John's Lutheran Church, his pastor, the Rev T.J. Vogel, officiating. He had chosen for his text the beautiful words: "I know that my Redeemer liveth--, Job 19:25-27" The Misses Mabel Sunderman and Emma Rurode sang a comforting duet: "Asleep in Jesus, Blessed Sleep". The following old friends and neighbors acted as pallbearers: J.K. Sunderman, Henry Johnson, H.F. Otte, J.H. Wagoner, H.H. Meyer and H. Hartstick. Interment was made in the family lot on the cemetery of Immanuel Lutheran Church. The many beautiful flowers which were heaped about the casket, spoke of the love and esteem in which the departed brother was held.
Rev 14, 13, "And I head a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them."
