Baumgarten, Elmer Fred Henry -
Elmer Fred Henry Baumgarten, 82, of Tucson, Ariz., died May 4 at St Mary's Hospital there of complications of surgery. The body was cremated, and graveside services will be at 11 am June 21 at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley.
Mr Baumgarten was born near Clarinda and had lived in Clarinda, Sutherland, Hartley, Des Moines and Las Vegas before moving to Tucson in 1998. He was a retired funeral director and had owned Baumgarten Funeral Homes in Spencer, Hartley, Sutherland and Peterson and had formerly worked for funeral homes in Clinton, Webster City and Jewell. He was involved in other business ventures, including retail appliances and a gift shop. He was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Tucson, a past president and 50-year member of Iowa Funeral Directors Association, a former Boy Scout leader and a former board member of Hartley Hospital, O'Brien County school board and Meadowbrook Golf Course. He obtained his pilot's license at the age of 56 and enjoyed fishing and bowling.
He is survived by his wife, Julie; a son, Steve of Des Moines; two daughters, Lori of Tucson and Carole Baumgarten of Tucson, who was Drake University's first women's basketball coach and a former director with the Des Moines YWCA; and four grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Elmer Baumgarten Memorial Fund, 5560 West Flying W., Tucson, Ariz., 85713. Warner Funeral Home in Hartley is handling arrangemtns.

Baumgarten, Walter E. -
Funeral services for Walter E. Baumgarten, 75, of Clarinda were held this Monday afternoon at St John's Lutheran Church in Clarinda, the Rev Alfred Bertke officiating.
Burial was under the direction of the Lavelie Funeral Home in the Clarinda Cemetery with military graveside services by American Legion Post 98 of Clarinda.
Music was furnished by the church choir, accompanied by Mrs Leland Herzberg. In charge of the register books were Mrs Herbert Herzberg and Mrs Paul Herzberg. Ushers were Darwin Herzberg and Clifford Goecker.
Casketbearers were Sidney Creveling, Leland Herzberg, Russell Holt, Ted Herzberg, Keith Wilson and Robert Rank. Baumgarten died early Friday morning at the Municipal Hospital after an illness of many years.
He was born Aug 12, 1894 at Clarinda, the son of Mr and Mrs Fred Baumgarten. He was married to Laura Rurode, March 9, 1922 at Clarinda. They farmed northwest of Clarinda until 1953 when they moved to town.
He served in the Army during World War I and became a member of the American Legion Post 98 of Clarinda.
He is survived by his wife, Laura, a daughter, Mrs Carroll (Arliss A.) Powell, of Tuscon, Ariz., two brothers, Albert of Clarinda and Will of Bethesda. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. |

Herzberg, Eleanora Anna Sophia Grebert -
Eleanora Herzberg, 81, of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away Sunday, March 14, 1999, at her residence in Clarinda.
Eleanora Anna Sophia Herzberg was born October 30, 1917, in Page County, Iowa, the daughter of John "Fred" and Henrietta (Rope) Grebert. She attended Immanuel Lutheran and Jackson Country Schools.
She was united in marriage to Herbert Herzberg on July 18, 1946, in Atchison, Kansas. Herbert preceded her in death on September 21, 1976. Eleanora was a homemaker and a member of St John's Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the Widowed Persons' Group.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brother Hilbert Grebert, and an infant sister at birth.
Survivors include her son, Gene Herzberg and wife Anita of Ballwin, Missouri; 2 grandchildren: Heidi Mogensen and husband John of Omaha, Nebraska, and Jeffrey Herzberg of Fremont, Nebraska; 2 sisters: Edna Herzberg of Clarinda, and Martha Krieser of Seward, Nebraska; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 am Wednesday, March 17th, 1999, at St John's Lutheran Church with Rev Gary Jaeckle officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. There was an open visitation at the funeral home. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Herzberg, Ernest Fred -
Ernest Fred Herzberg, son of Herman and Anna Freudenburg Herzberg, was born in Page County, Ia., February 28, 1895, and passed away April 25, 1983, at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital at the age of 88 years, 1 month and 25 days.
On April 30, 1916, he was united in marriage to Augusta Rurode.
They farmed northwest of Clarinda until 1952 at which time they moved to Villisca.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, wife Augusta, two brothers, and one sister.
He is survived by his son Paul and daughter-in-law Gracka of Grain Valley, Mo.; four grandchildren: Terry of Albany, Ga.; David of Sedalia, Mo.; Steven of Livingston, Ca.; and Kathleen of Bernardsville, N.J.; one great-granddaughter Jennifer; and a brother Paul of Clarinda.
In behalf of Paul and his family, we wish to express their gratitude for the many acts of kindness evidenced in thought and deed and for your attendance at this Memorial Service for Ernest.

Hicks, Roland Claire - Roland Claire, Hicks, 74, passed away Easter morning to be with Jesus March 30, 1997. Beloved husband of Helen Louise Hicks of Tucson. He is survived by his loving sons, Gary (Donna) Hicks and Jack (Cindy) Hicks. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Anthony, Kristopher, Charles, David, Daniel and Heather. Visitation will be held for friends and family, Saturday, April 5 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Evergreen Mortuary, 3015 N. Oracle Rd. Funeral services are to be held at 2:00 pm Sunday at Evergreen Mortuary. Claire was a longtime resident of Tucson and had grown to love the Arizona desert and its wildlife. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him. |

Holt, Flora King -
Mrs Flora Holt, 74, of Clarinda, died Monday evening Jan 13, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha where she had been a patient for the past two weeks, following a long illness.
She was born Jan 15, 1922, at Floyd, Va, the daughter of Joseph and Minnie Conner King. She was a registered nurse, having graduated from training at Roanoak, Va. She was the Clarinda Community School Nurse for 25 years before her retirement. She also worked at Municipal Hospital and Goldenrod Nursing Home. On May 4, 1946, she married Russell J. Holt, who preceded her in death in 1979.
She is survived by three sons, Jack Holt, Greg Holt and wife, Carla, and Mark Holt, and wife, Terry, all of Clarinda. There are two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents, husband, and three brothers.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan 16, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, with Rev John Clark officiating. Burial is in Clarinda Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church. |

Twenty years ago, Ruth Jackson, human relations director for the City of Omaha, told The World-Herald that her favorite sport was politics.
"It just seemed to be in her blood," said Jackson's daughter, Carolynn Jackson.
Ruth Jackson, who had been active in the Democratic Party, gave up a lifetime of politics as health problems began to slow her down. She died Sunday at Mercy Care Center after failing to recover from two surgeries in August, her daughter said. She was 75.
"My mother was just tired, and she wanted to rest," Carolynn Jackson said.
A burial service will be held Saturday in Clarinda, Iowa. Those attending will gather at 10:30 am at Myers Funeral Home, 22nd and Lake Streets.
A veteran of city government for 21 years, Jackson headed the Human Relations Department under two mayors, becoming the first woman to head a city department. Former Mayor Al Veys appoined Jackson in 1977. She retired in 1985.
She also worked with a city-sponsored program to improve dwelling standards for housing in designated parts of the city. She later served on the ...[article cut off]

Rurode, Helen Marie -
Miss Helen Marie Rurode, 36, died late Friday at the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs where she had been a patient for a week.
Helen was born in Page County on Dec 12, 1929, the daughter of Louis and Amelia Salomom Rurode. She was a member of St Paul's Luthern Church at Yorktown.
She is survived by one brother and his wife, Mr and Mrs Lloyd Rurode and a niece, Brenda, of Canistota, SD, and several uncles and aunts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her mother in 1950 and her father in 1957, and a brother Arvid in 1952.
The funeral service was held this Monday afternoon at the Williams Memorial chapel with the Rev Theodore A. Letzring, pastor of her church, officiating. Richard Ulmer was the organist with Mrs Roger Linke as the soloist. Casket bearers were Paul O. Herzberg, Marrel Sump, Stanley Carlson and Larry Sunderman.
Interment was in the Clarinda Cemetery. |

Sunderman, Emma Caroline Rurode -
Mrs Dan Sunderman, 67, died Wednesday morning at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital where she had been hospitalized for six days, being in failing health since the first of August.
Emma Caroline Rurode was born in Nodaway Township, Page County, on February 8, 1894, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Carl Rurode. She spent her entire lifetime in the Clarinda area, a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed.
After her marriage to Dan Sunderman the family farm home has been just north of the Immanuel Church.
She is survived by her husband. The daughter, Mrs Ruth Sump, and son, Wayne Sunderman, are of the Clarinda farm area. Her brothers, Theodore Rurode and Otto Rurode, are of Woonsocket, S. Dak. Two sisters are Mrs Ernest Herzberg of Villisca and Mrs Walter Baumgarten of Clarinda. She has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
