 Vinsant, James – James Vinsant was born in eastern Virginia in the year 1820, and died at his home three and one-half miles northeast of Clarinda on May 6, 1903, aged 83 years. He moved with his parents while a child to Tennessee where he grew to manhood. His parents died while he was quite a small boy and he started out in life with but little means.

He was married to Elizabeth Douglas on October 15, 1845. In 1854 he came to Iowa and to Page county and settled on the old home farm where he lived until the time of his death. He was the father of seven children, Milton V., of Nebraska township, Mesdames Emma and Anna Thompson of Clarinda, Mrs H.G. Cunning of East River township. Frank and Nannie are still at home and Thomas died in December, 1887. His wife died in October, 1898.

Funeral services were held at the home Friday morning at 10:30, conducted by Rev IlgenFritz, and was largely attended by neighbors and friends. Interment in Clarinda cemetery. Page County Democrat, Clarinda, Iowa, May 14, 1903

 

 Van Sandt, N.L. – Dr N.L. Van Sandt died at his home in south Clarinda Tuesday morning, Jan 6, 1903, aged 77 years, 6 months and 29 days. About a year ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and had been partially helpless since. Mr Van Sandt was born in Brown county, Ohio, May 7, 1825. His father was a native of Kentucky and during the heated anti-slavery days in Ohio from 1835 and for years following was an active worker in the “Under Ground Railway” scheme to free negroes from bondage, and became the original [sic] of one of the characters of Mrs Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” His son N.L. Van Sandt took up the study of medicine and graduated in 1850. In Nov 7th of the same year he was married to Miss Eliza Heald, and about ten years after they came to this county, which has since been their home. The Doctor has always enjoyed a successful practice, and was foremost in advancing the interest of our embryo city. He filled many official positions, and was a member of the 10th state general assembly. A good man has gone. He leaves a devoted wife, and one son, Stanley, to mourn his death. The funeral was held from the home at 2 o’clock yesterday, conducted by his pastor, Rev Maclean.

VanOstrand, Margaret Mae Goudie, 84, the daughter of Ray Howard and Edna Alice (Hartness) Goudie, was born on Feb. 15, 1922, on the family farm in Waveland Township of Pottawatomie County. She passed away on Tuesday morning, Dec. 19, 2006, at Gardenview Care Center, Shenandoah.


After graduating from Griswold High School, she received her teaching certificate through the Normal Training program. On June 24, 1948, she was married to Chester Dean Van Ostrand, Red Oak.

Throughout her life, Margaret worked several jobs, which included teaching country school for a year, working as a waitress, working at Mt. Arbor Nursery and cleaning motel rooms for a while. Most ofher working years, she was a babysitter assisting more than 100 families in the Shenandoah area.

Margaret was a member of the First Christian Church, Shenandoah, and had joined the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed quilting, reading, writing letters to family and friends and collecting family photos.

Preceding Margaret in death were her parents, husband Chester, and one sister, Myrle Elizabeth Beerman.

Survivors include her children, Brenda Rae Lee and her husband, Michael, Omaha, Neb.; Sheri Lee Skelton and her husband, Michael, White Mountain, Alaska; Kent Eugene Van Ostrand and his wife, Vonda, Freeport, Ill.; grandchildren, Michelle Abbott, Amanda Rosso, Lindsay Lee, Jessica Williams, Heather Skelton, Heidi Payton, Chelsea Skelton, Olivia Myers, Mahala Van Ostrand and Judah Van Ostrand; 16 great-grand children; one brother, Richard Ray Goudie and his wife, Beverly,of Casper, Wyo.; along with other relatives and friends.

Van Fosson, Leo, age 67, of Braddyville, Iowa, died Sunday, February 6, 2005, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, February 10, 2005, at the Presbyterian Church, College Springs, Iowa with Rev. Jim Crapson officiating. Visitation with the family will be 7-8 p.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, College Springs, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the College Springs Presbyterian Church or to the Braddyville Fire & Rescue. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
Leo Alfred Van Fosson was born December 11, 1937, in Page County, Iowa, to Ray E. Van Fosson and June (Ripley) Van Fosson. Leo was a graduate of Amity High School, College Springs, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Marie Vogel June 14, 1958 at Coin, Iowa. Leo was a truck driver and a machinery dealer and was co-owner of the State Line Oil gas station at Braddyville. He enjoyed flying and fishing and his greatest enjoyment was playing with the grandchildren and following them in all of their activities. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, College Springs, Iowa.
Preceding Leo in death were his father; infant sister; infant son; infant great grandson; sister-in-law, Elma Van Fosson. Survivors include his wife Marie of the home; daughters: Kim Gotschall and husband Randy of Braddyville, Iowa, Cindy Van Fosson of Clarinda, Iowa, Karen Luke and husband Tony of St. Joseph, Missouri, Pam Culp of Mound City, Missouri; seven grandchildren: "the boys": Justin Riddle and Jared Riddle and wife Lindsay, "the kids', Eric Gotschall and Beth Gotschall, 'the girls', Shannon Culp and Shelby Culp and "A.J.", Alex Luke; one great grandchild Drake Logan Riddle; mother, June Van Fosson of Clarinda, Iowa; brothers: John Van Fosson and wife Sue of Clarinda, Iowa, Charley Van Fosson and wife Bev of Clarinda, Iowa, Dave Van Fosson of Forsyth, Missouri and his special fishing buddy, Lowell Davison.

Vaughn, Elmer Eugene "Gene", age 83, of Manhattan, died Saturday, February 12, 2005, at the Leonardville Nursing Home in Leonardville, Kansas.
He was born on September 28, 1921, in Nodaway, Iowa, the son of H.D. "Clyde" and Abbie Gertrude (Thuman) Vaughn. He was united in marriage to Donis C. Paro on March 29, 1943 in Silver Springs, Maryland. To this union they were blessed with three children: Robert Bruce, Steven Craig and Susan Lee.
He was a Sgt. in the Army Infantry in Europe during WWII and later worked for the Federal Government in Washington, D.C. He was a territory sales representative for Keebler Foods until his retirement in 1980. A Manhattan resident since 1973, Gene enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years: Donis of Manhattan; two sons: Robert Bruce Vaughn of Arvada, CO, and Steven Craig Vaughn and wife Melinda of Waynesville, Ohio and one daughter: Susan Lee Turner and husband Stephen of Manhattan, Kansas and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home with Dr. Don Leach officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center, Kansas.

VanMeter, Marvel E., age  96, passed away June 12,  2006, at Risen Son Christian Village.

Marvel was born July 3, 1909, in Carbondale, Iowa, to Eric L. and Ida (Gustafson) Erickson. The family moved to Ogden, Iowa, in 1910, and Marvel graduated from Ogden High School. Marvel married Earl D. Van Meter July 17, 1927, in Jefferson, Iowa, and eventually moved to Arion, Iowa, where their two children Roger and Lillian were born. The family moved to Council Bluffs in 1930. Marvel was a prolific worker in many nonprofit organizations throughout her life; most notably the Red Cross and the Girl Scouts. She was active in her church and also the public schools. Marvel was a genealogist, stamp collector, and enjoyed quilting, crocheting and had a gift for making crafts and stationary. Marvel was an active, giving person who enjoyed life to the fullest.

Marvel is preceded in death by her husband, Earl (1974) and her children, Roger Van Meter (1995) and Lillian Brock (2002); three sisters and six brothers.

Marvel is survived by her son-in-law, John Brock; grandchildren Mike (Darla), Gary, Teri (Jim), and Sue (Tim); great grandchildren Allen, Ryan, Staci, Rachelle, Kevin, Kendra, and Tanner; nine great, great grandchildren, and two sisters Clovia and Ione; and a host of family and friends.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 until 8 p.m. at Henry - Livingston Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be Thursday, 11 a.m. at Henry-Livingston Funeral Chapel with Rev. Marvin Arnpriester officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery with lunch to follow at Broadway United Methodist Church in Council Bluffs. Memorials may be made to Broadway United Methodist Church or Epworth United Methodist Church.

Vance, Anna Belle Wallace - Anna Belle Vance, age 80 years, 4 months and 13 days, of Shenandoah passed away on Tuesday evening, June 19, 2007 at the Shenandoah Medical Center. She was born February 6, 1927 in Maryville, Missouri, the daughter of Oakley and Anna Julia (Hopkins) Wallace.
Growing up in Maryville, Missouri, Anna attended school and later started working at the local hospital to help support her family. On February 9, 1946 she was united in marriage to Charles Gaylord Vance, Sr. in Maryville. To this union four children were born; Julia May, Charles Gaylord, Jr., George Harold and Kathy Lane.
After living on a farm in Trenton, Missouri the family moved to Shenandoah in 1959. There Anna worked as a housekeeper for many years at Hand Community Hospital. Anna loved listening to Elvis Presley, watching races on television with her son George and reading her bible. She loved talking on the phone and telling family stories. Due to health conditions, her last eight months were spent at Gardenview Care Center where she joined the Red Hat Society, played bingo and went to bible studies.
Preceding Anna in death were her parents; husband, Charles G. Vance, Sr. in 1973; daughter, Julia Terry in 1988; and son, Charles G. Vance Jr. in 1992.
Survivors include her children; George Vance of Shenandoah, Iowa, Kathy Hammons and her husband Frank of Shenandoah, Iowa; son-in-law, Keith Terry of Essex, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Maxine Vance of Shenandoah, Iowa; sister-in-law, Doris Wallace of Shenandoah, Iowa; grandchildren; Lonney Terry and his wife Tracy of Red Oak, Iowa, Kevin Terry and his wife Cheryl of Essex, Iowa, Tony Vance and his wife Kristi of Shenandoah, Iowa, Steve Vance and his wife Amy of Lewis, Iowa, Brian Hammons and his wife Renee of Shenandoah, Iowa, Mark Hammons and his wife Andrea of Fort Collins, Colorado, Brenda Haynie and her husband Shane of Shenandoah, Iowa; 11 great grandchildren along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2007 at Selby-Kirsch Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Shenandoah. Visitation with the family present took place from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening, June 21 at Selby-Kirsch Funeral Chapel. A memorial fund is being established.

VanHoutan, Robert K. "Bob" - Celebration of life services will be held on Tuesday, March 31, at 2:00 p.m.at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Robert Keith VanHoutan, son of Beryl and Ruth (Hall) VanHoutan, was born at home on August 10, 1926, in rural northwest Missouri near Martinsville. He was the youngest of three sons. He passed away on Friday, March 27, 2009 in Omaha, Nebraska.

His early life was spent on the family farm northwest of New Hampton where the family moved when Bob was a young boy. He was a member of the Willow Row Methodist Church and was baptized in the pond on the farm he would later purchase. Bob attended Locust Grove Country School through the eighth grade and then Albany R-III High School where he graduated in 1944. After graduation, he served two years in the United States Army on the Pacific front.

On August 26, 1951, Bob was united in marriage to “Skip” Jones. To this union two daughters Terry Lynn and Deborah Ann, were born.

After their marriage, Bob and Skip worked in St. Joseph, Missouri. They moved to Roosevelt, Minnesota near the Canadian border and bought a farm, but returned to Missouri for the winters to work in St. Joe. In 1957 they moved back to Missouri and purchased a farm in Gentry County which they operated until 2004. During this time they took great pride in their turkey operation which Bob operated with his two brothers. Bob and Skip moved to Shenandoah, Iowa in 1966 where they owned and operated a wholesale/retail ceramic business. This was followed by the purchase of a small grocery store. After Terry and Debbie graduated high school, they returned to their family farm near New Hampton, Missouri.

Bob was a dreamer and a builder. Instead of retirement, he and Skip built and operated a 72 bed skilled care facility in Maryville, Missouri. They sold this business and moved back to Shenandoah in the fall of 2003 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Even after a diagnosis of A.L.S., Bob designed and built another care facility, Fair Oaks, which he and Skip owned and operated until April 2006.

After “retirement”, Bob and Skip enjoyed traveling. He enjoyed documenting his travels by videotaping the scenery and events. He also enjoyed recording and watching his grandchildren’s activities. Bob and Skip loved the outdoors and the beauty of nature. They especially enjoyed the flower gardens that surrounded their home.

Preceding Bob in death were his parents, nephew Gordon VanHoutan and brothers; Maurice and Jerry.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife Skip of Shenandoah, IA; children, Terry Fichter and husband Tom of Shenandoah, IA; Debbie Norton and husband Jeff of Sidney, IA; grandchildren; Anthony and Matthew Fichter of Ames, IA, Emily Fichter of Shenandoah, IA, Joel Norton and wife Alison of Olathe, KS, Jordan Norton of Loveland, CO, Andrew Norton of Ames, IA and Rachel and Collin Norton of Sidney, IA; great-granddaughter Charlotte Norton of Olathe, KS; other family and friends.

To his survivors he leaves a legacy of loving family ties and a strong work ethic. Most of all, he leaves his family with the encouragement that you can dream, build, and with perseverance, make all things possible.

 
VanRossum, David Weldon - David Weldon Van Rossum, son of David Washington Van Rossum and Ollie Jane (Shutt) Van Rossum, was born on August 8, 1916, on the farm in St. Charles, Iowa. He passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2006, at the Elm Heights/Parkcrest Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 89.
David lived on the farm until he moved into St. Charles when he was six years old. He attended St. Charles elementary and high school. From January 1942 to September 1945, David served in the South Pacific with the United States Air Force. He was at Port Moresby, New Guinea, and then Clark Field in the Philippines. He was a Staff Sergeant with the 5th Air Force, 39th Squadron, 35th group.
On July 12, 1941, David was united in marriage to Beverly Tamen in Bethany, Missouri. The couple resided in Des Moines after their marriage. He was later married to Evelyn (White) Haworth on July 9, 1967, in Des Moines, Iowa. They continued to reside in Des Moines until 1980 when they moved to Shenandoah, Iowa. David worked as a template maker for Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel from 1941-1980, with an interruption for the war.
David was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, American Legion Post #88, and Senior Citizens. His interests included woodworking, playing pool at senior citizens, riding his scooter, going to the Donut Shop and repairing and inventing solutions to all things broken.
Preceding David in death were his parents; infant sister, Nancy Maude; siblings, James, Wilma, and Beulah and his first wife, Beverly. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; daughter Sandra Sapp and husband Ben of Norwalk, Iowa; son Richard Van Rossum and wife Penny of Des Moines, Iowa; step-daughter Sarah Lottridge and husband Ron of Shenandoah, Iowa; 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 7, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Jim Gubser. Organist was Becky Hoenshel. Vocalist was Susie Schaaf, who sang "Sweet By And By" and "God Will Take Care Of You". Attending the memory register were Eleanor Radden and Dorothy Hensen. Ushers were Jim Sligar and Dave Tackett, Sr. Casket bearers were Scott Helverson, David Van Rossum, Ed Lottridge, Jim Van Rossum, Ron Lottridge, Brad Tasler, Russ Nauman and Greg Polzien. Military rites were accorded by the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Varley, Lawrence D. "Larry" - Lawrence D. “Larry” Varley III was born on September 20, 1946 in Shenandoah, Iowa; the son of Lawrence D. and Frances Ruth (Conklin) Varley II. Larry entered into rest on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at his rural Shenandoah home following a brave battle with cancer.

Larry attended school in Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1964. On November 17, 1971 enlisted in the United States Army where he served until he was honorably discharged on November 9, 1973.

Larry owned and operated Doc’s Place in Shenandoah from 1981-2001. Larry enjoyed visiting with his customers and the friendships that he made. After his retirement he tended to the family farm. Cold Springs Farm was a special and important part of Larry’s life. Larry’s life came full circle here as it was on this farm that he was raised and in his final days, it was the place that provided him peace as he entered into eternal rest.

The Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs were a high priority on Larry’s list of favorite sports teams. When the gold and black took the field, you could bet that Larry would be listening. When baseball season rolled around, it was all about the Cubs. Win or lose, he was a true fan until the end. Larry was also a member of the Shenandoah Eagles Club.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters Tammy Schaapherder and husband Jan-Peter of Tanzania, Africa and Teri Varley and Stacy Johnson of Kearny, AZ; step children Rusty Robinson of Thurman, IA, Polly Greene of Shenandoah, IA and Zeke Robinson of Bonner Springs, KS; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Vernice Lindell and husband Bob of Evansville, IN, and their daughter, Jennifer Werry and her husband Paul of Poseyville, IN, Glenice Varley and her husband Tom Wessels of Ames, IA and Jill Varley of Saginaw, TX; other relatives and many friends. Larry donated his body to the University of Nebraska to help further medical research.

Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Shenandoah with Rev. Gary Fuller officiating. Max and Patty Woerth attended the memorial register. Special music for the service included "Lonesome Dove", "Amazing Grace", "Go Rest High On That Mountain" and "Iowa's Fight Song". Serving as honorary casket bearers were all of Larry's friends. Memorials can be directed to Heartland Hospice, People for Paw or to the donor's choice.
Vaughn, Mary Beth Gee - Mary Beth Gee Vaughn, daughter of Elmer Charles and Sadie (Beach) Gee, was born on August 20, 1918, at her parents’ home in Granada, Colorado. Mary Beth entered into eternal rest on Monday, December 14, 2009, at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 91 years, 3 months and 24 days after being cared for at her home for the past 9 years.
Her early life was spent in the communities of Granada, CO, Pueblo, CO, Cedar Rapids, IA and Shenandoah, IA. Mary Beth graduated as valedictorian from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1936. She was active in school plays, speech, the school annual and newspaper. Following high school she attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, receiving a degree in history in 1940.
On August 22, 1940, Mary Beth was united in marriage to Edward Churchill Vaughn, Sr. at her parents home in Shenandoah. Following their marriage they resided in Montgomery, AL, where she began her teaching career in 1941. Ed and Mary Beth started their family in Macon GA in 1943. Due to Ed’s military commitment the family moved to Salem, OR and Mineral Wells, TX, before settling in Shenandoah.
Upon their return to Shenandoah, Mary Beth worked for the Iowan Magazine. Mary Beth was a teacher at the Shenandoah High School from 1961 to 1981. She was Head of the English Department and taught Sophomore English, Modern Communications, Sight and Sound, Photography, as well as sponsoring the school newspaper, the Shen High Can . Mary Beth was credited with organizing the first “Earth Day” celebration at SHS. In 1985, the Mary Beth Vaughn English Award at SHS was created in honor of her 20 years of teaching.
Through the years, she was also active PEO where she was a 60 year member of the JA Chapter, Child Study Club, Book Club, was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Field Service (AFS) and working on school bond issues during the 1950’s and 60’s. She enjoyed camping, square dancing, gardening and bird watching. Mary Beth was one of the founders of the Shenandoah Area Christmas Bird Count in 1955. This year’s Christmas Bird Count is dedicated to Mary Beth and is being held today.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Elmer and Sadie Gee, husband, Edward Churchill Vaughn, Sr. and brother, Charles Robert Gee. Those left to cherish her memory include: Susan Beach Vaughn and Fleet Mullinax, Edward (Ned) Churchill Vaughn, Jr. and Rosemary, Elizabeth (Betsy) Vaughn Ayers and Arthur and Barbara Cunningham. She has four grandchildren, Jill Lindsay Vaughn of St. Paul, MN, Sadie Elizabeth Ayers and Emma Vaughn Ayers both of Tacoma, WA and Hannah Agnell Ayers of Forest Grove, OR. Her faithful caregivers include: Carol O’Neil, Sharon Swank, Rosmery Gutierrez, Julia Lopez, Maria Mather, Andrea Swank, Brooke Erickson, Maria Amurrio-Dodd and others. She is also survived by sister-in-law Mrs. Charles R. (Jeanne Anderson ) Gee, niece Sally West Gee and nephew Timothy Charles Gee, many friends, fellow teachers and students throughout the years.
A memorial service was held at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah on Saturday, December 19, 2009, with Rev. Clarke Finehout officiating. At the Memory Register was Ray and Kathy Graves and Doug and Connie Quist. The book of memories was attended by Mary Belle Reed. Ushers for the service was Jim Sligar, Gordon Jones and Duane Rexroth. The soloist for the service was Pam Lewis the organist was Becky Hoenshel. Memorial s may be directed the Mary Beth Vaughn English Scholarship Fund. Vawter, Elton R. - Elton Ray Vawter, 89, of Shenandoah and formerly of Coin, passed away on Friday, December 19, 2008, at the Via Christe Assisted Living Community in Omaha, Nebraska. Elton and his wife Dorothy farmed in the Coin area before retiring and moving into Shenandoah. Elton is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Freeman) Vawter; and a daughter, Valerie Vawter of Omaha, NE; other relatives and friends.
Vrbsky, Helen Kubert - Helen Vrbsky, second daughter born to Joseph H. and Martha A. (Newburn) Kubert, passed away at the Westridge Care Center in Clarinda, Iowa on September 24, 2008 at the age of 95 years, 5 months, and 26 days.

Helen was born on March 29, 1913 in Pleasant Hill, Nebraska. She was primarily raised by her father, after her mother's passing when she was only 16 months old. Other aunts and uncles also helped to raise Helen along with her older sister Rose. She attended Pleasant Hill District 11 School through her eighth grade year. She participated in the many school plays that were put on at the Tabor Hall. She used a scoop shovel sled to slide on the snow in the winter and she also enjoyed ice-skating on the mill pond. She also helped with the many chores that needed to be done.

In her younger years, Helen would walk many miles to attend barn dances with cousins and friends. She also helped cook and clean house for many relatives and friends. Helping to harvest berries and other fruit were other jobs that she held.

On March 20, 1934, Helen married Louis Vrbsky in Wilber, Nebraska. This union was blessed with three children. They made their home on the Vrbsky home place. Helen and Louis were married for 63 years before Louis' passing on November 19, 1997.

In 1939, due to 7 years of drought and depression, the couple sold the farm in Nebraska and bought a farm in Fremont County, Iowa north of Farragut. They moved from Nebraska to Iowa in March of 1940. In 1948 they moved into their new home which was built with their own hands. Louis said, "I cut the lumber and Helen pounded the nails."

Helen was a member of the Farragut Band Mothers, American War Mothers, S&N Club, OTO Club, Lady Ike' where she served as Kitchen Chairperson, Vice President, President, and was also a board member. Another proud accomplishment was when Helen received her 50 year pin as a member of the ZCBJ Tabor Lodge #74 of Dorchester, Nebraska. Other enjoyments included quilting, embroidery, crocheting, gardening, and tending to her flowers. She enjoyed the times that she spent with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Louis, sister Rose and grandson-in-law Mathew "Sonny" Piitz.

Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday; September 29, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah with Rev. Clark Finehout officiating. Burial followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Jim Androy and Norman Kling served as ushers while Mary Looper attended the register book. Becky Hoenshel served as the accompanist for Charles Peterson who sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden". The congregation sang "How Great Thou Art". Serving as casket bearers were Helen's beloved grandchildren; Jim Vrbsky, Jeff Vrbsky, John Vrbsky, Deanne Swanson, Kevin Staehr, Craig Staehr, Donita Piitz and Dana Barker. Honorary Casket Bearers included Bernie Hughes, Joe Hughes, Tom Leahy, Don Peterson, Don Scott, Merlin McAllister and Newell Desart.

Van Buskirk, Lavonne Carolyn Marie Larson - Lavonne Carolyn Marie Van Buskirk, age 87, was born June 11, 1917, in Stanton, Iowa, to Arthur G. and Ellen M. (Hoaglund) Larson and passed away December 21, 2004, at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Shenandoah, Iowa.

After living a short time in Stanton and Red Oak, Iowa, Lavonne moved with her family to Clarinda, Iowa, where she grew up and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1933. She went on to further her education, graduating from Clarinda Junior College.

On November 29, 1936, she married Joe Van Buskirk of Shenandoah, where they made their home. The couple had two children, Jane and Roger. Lavonne was a devoted, loving wife and mother while serving her church and community.

An innovative entrepreneur, Lavonne developed the 7-Teen Shoppe, a fine fashion store for young ladies, in 1953. She managed the popular shop for 16 years. Lavonne founded the WHEOS (We Help Each Other Spiritually) group at the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah, where she was a member. She also served as an Elder and Deacon and was a member of the Session and Presbyterian Women. Lavonne was an honorary member of the Program Agency of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

In her spare time, Lavonne served as a member of many organizations: the American Legion Auxiliary; Book Club; the Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as the Worthy Matron; PEO Chapter JA, where she served a term as president; the Shenandoah Historical Society; the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; and the Shenandoah Music Association.

At home, Lavonne was known as a great cook and an inventive decorator. She had a great passion for plants and flowers and loved to play bridge. When she and her husband retired, Lavonne often said that she learned to play golf to please Joe and Joe learned to play bridge to please her. Lavonne was very supportive and involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed big family dinners and entertaining family and friends.

Preceding Lavonne in death was her infant sister, Maxine Larson; her parents, Arthur and Ellen Larson; her husband Joe; and her brother, Carroll Larson. Surviving are her children and their spouses: Jane and Ed McDonald of Surprise, Arizona, and Roger and Leslie Van Buskirk of Shenandoah. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Scott McDonald, Shelly Encinas, and Christopher, Lauren and Piper Van Buskirk; her great-grandchildren Brittany, Andrew and Gabby Encinas; several nieces and nephews and other relatives; and many friends.

A celebration of Lavonne's life was held for the family at 10:30 A.M. Monday, December 27, 2004, at the Selby Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah with Reverend Rick Sleyster officiating. Organist was Terry Stafford and soloist was Jackie DeVries who sang How Great Thou Art. Casket bearers were Roger Van Buskirk, Christopher Van Buskirk, Ed McDonald, Dick Irvin, Bob Larson and Jim Larson. Final resting place was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah.
Memorial services were also held 1:30 P.M. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Rick Sleyster giving words of comfort. Terry Stafford was the organist while the congregation sang Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming and Children of the Heavenly King. At the memory register was Mary Alice Johnson and caring for flowers was Jo Dayle Irvin. Ushers were Marilyn Bayless. Doris Broderson, Mary Ann Gibson and Evelyn Lindberg.

Van Fosson, Beverly Jane Cavner - Beverly Jane Van Fosson was born November 19, 1939 to Clark Bruce and Clara Ellen (Case) Cavner on the Cavner farm southwest of Shambaugh, Iowa. She attended Butler country school and graduated Amity High School in 1959 as the last class to do so with the name of Amity. She and Charles Duane Van Fosson were married June 10, 1967 at the Methodist Church in Maryville, Missouri. They farmed two miles southwest of College Springs, Iowa having a dairy herd. She helped with the farming and raising her family. She had a love of football, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, country music (the classic artists), baking bread, cinnamon rolls, and a particular love for her grandkids. They moved to Clarinda in April 1999.
Beverly passed away Sunday, April 27, 2008 at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda following an extended illness. She was predeceased by her parents; son, Jeffrey Allen Van Fosson in 1970; brothers, Robert C. Cavner in 1951 and Leonard Cavner in 1995; sister-in-law Elma Van Fosson; brothers-in-law, Leo Van Fosson and Marvin Wichman; and father-in-law Raymond Edison Van Fosson.
She is survived by her husband, Charles of Clarinda; son, Duane Van Fosson and his wife Brooke of Clarinda; grandchildren Kardeye Mitchell, Brittany, Kaleb, James and Bryan Van Fosson; sisters, Elizabeth Bartels and husband Clarence of Atlantic, Iowa, and Marilyn Wichman of Clarinda; brothers-in-law John Van Fosson and wife Sue of Clarinda, and David Van Fosson of Forsythe, Missouri; sister-in-law Marie Van Fosson, Braddyville, Iowa; and mother-in-law, June Van Fosson of Clarinda.
Services were held 10:30 a.m. April 30, 2008 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home of Clarinda, Iowa, with Interment at Maple Hill Cemetery, College Springs, Iowa. Memorials suggested to the Kidney Foundation.

Van Fosson, Paul Frederic - Paul Frederic Van Fosson was born in Page County, Iowa, near Clarinda, on December 10, 1920 the son of John and Rosa (Blake) Van Fosson. He grew up in Page County where he attended rural schools and then graduated, from Amity High School in College Springs, Iowa in 1938. He was a “Yell Leader” during high school and also played baseball on the College Springs town team. After his formal schooling he started farming and on April 3, 1943 was married to Lola Lee Snodderley in Kansas City, Missouri. They continued farming and moved to their farm two miles east of College Springs where they farmed for forty-three years before retiring.
Paul is survived by four children, Connie Stange of Shenandoah, Iowa; Linda Davison and husband Bob of Farmington, Minnesota; Ron Van Fosson and wife Rosita of Kimberling City, Missouri; and Carol Kendrick and husband Kerry of Corinth, Texas; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one brother Leo Van Fosson and wife Alice of Mission, Texas; one sister-in-law June Van Fosson of Clarinda; nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Lola on May 20, 2005; and four brothers Howard and his wife Isabelle Van Fosson, Ray Van Fosson, Joe and wife Lois Van Fosson, and Carl and wife Fern Van Fosson.

Van Fosson, Raymond V. "Dutch" - Raymond Virgil “Dutch” Van Fosson, the son of James and Stella (Wilson) Van Fosson, was born December 9, 1920, at Braddyville, Iowa, and passed away January 26, 2003, in Clarinda, Iowa.
Growing up in the Braddyville, Iowa and Elmo, Missouri areas, Dutch graduated from the Elmo High School in 1940. He then worked for his father on the family farm and later as a farm hand in South Dakota. On May 23, 1953, Dutch was united in marriage to Billie Smith, and to this union, six children, Virgil, Don, Helen, George,Vesta and Rose, were born. When they were first married, Dutch worked for farmers in the Elmo area. Through the years he was employed at various jobs like Town Marshall and for the local livestock sale barn. For 16 years, before his retirement, he was employed by the Shenandoah Community Schools as custodian. Here he made lots of student friends, even having the high school students dedicate the School Annual in his honor.
Dutch was a former member of the Eagles and Lions Club in Shenandoah. He enjoyed dancing, gardening and was an avid wood worker, making various pieces of furniture for members of his family. He loved and enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren plus a couple of companions, his dogs, Lady and Blacky. He often kept a watchful eye over Billie’s quilt making, giving advise where he thought it was needed.
Preceding Dutch in death were his parents; sons, Don and George Van Fosson; and brothers, Marvin and Glen Van Fosson.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Van Fosson of Shenandoah; son, Virgil Van Fosson of Dunnellon, Florida; Daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Ron Hickman of Quincy, Illinois, Vesta and Steve Pudenz of Papillion, Nebraska and Rose and Aaron Smith of Aurilia, Iowa. Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law, Art and Ruth Van Fosson of Maryville, Missouri, Lewis and Carol Van Fosson of Mitchellville, Iowa, Dean and Dorothy Van Fosson of Maryville; sister, Hazel Estes of Maryville; and 12 grandchildren, 1 step grandson, 8 great grandchildren; plus other relatives and friends.

Van Horn, Donald Clifton - Donald Clifton Van Horn, age 79, the son of Fred R. and Carmen C. (Garrean) Van Horn was born December 25, 1926, at Bartlett, Iowa and passed away January 16, 2006, in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Growing up at Bartlett, Don received his education and graduated from Bartlett High School in 1944. For twenty–five years he was employed as a heavy machine operator for Jack Stanley Construction. He currently worked with Dean Mather and Sons and was employed there for some thirty-six years. Don belonged to a “Morning Coffee Club,” where he enjoyed visiting and joking with his friends. He enjoyed playing golf and hunting in his early years.
Preceding Don in death were his parents. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Stanley Bonnes of Columbia, Missouri; granddaughters, Heather Wright, Holly Bonnes and Heidi Bonnes, all of Columbia; two great granddaughters, Kylie Bonnes and Madison Munoz of Columbia; a sister, Dorothy Forney of Tabor, Iowa; plus other relatives and friends.

Vianelli, Sharon Ann Jackson - Sharon Ann Vianelli was born May 1, 1945 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd and Bonnie (Nance) Jackson. She passed away on Tuesday morning, August 26, 2008 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 63 years, 3 months and 25 days.

Sharon grew up in the Villisca area and graduated from Villisca High School in 1963. On August 27, 1977, she was united in marriage to Eugene Vianelli in Coin, Iowa. Sharon lived in California for ten years and in 1980 she and Eugene made their home outside of Essex, Iowa.

Sharon worked as a cashier for Pamida. She worked in the Shenandoah store until it closed. She then transferred to the Red Oak store and worked there until her health forced her to stop. Sharon loved to cook and in high school she won the Crisco Award. She was also an avid 4-H member growing up. Later in life she became a 4-H leader. Most of all, Sharon loved her family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lloyd Jackson. Vickers, Esther Brown - Memorial graveside services for Esther Vickers, age 99 of Shenandoah, Iowa will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 12, 2007 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah with Rev. Marcia Gilbert officiating. There is no scheduled visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Assembly of God Church in Shenandoah. Esther Vickers passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah.
Esther was born August 28, 1907 near Springfield, Missouri, the daughter of William and Martha (Robertson) Brown. She attended school through the eighth grade and was eventually married to Earl Holmes. After his death, Esther was later married to Lester Vickers in Shenandoah. She worked as a homemaker all of her life raising four children. Esther was also a member of the Assembly of God Church in Shenandoah.
Esther was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; son, Samuel Holmes; grandson, Burke Ford and son-in-law, Patrick Ford.
Survivors include her children; Jeanne Ford of Clovis, California, Bonnie Betz and her husband J.R. of Atlantic, Iowa, Jeri Gillespie and her husband Gus of Anchorage, Alaska; seven grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren along with other relatives and friends.

Veak, Florence Josephine Newman - Florence Josephine Veak, the daughter of John and Ida (Smith) Newman, was born April 20, 1920, on the family farm in Wayne County, Nebraska, near the small, rural town of Winside. She passed away on January 29, 2004, at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa. She was 83.
Growing up in the Winside and Hoskins area, Florence received her education in a local country school and later high school at Winside. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. After moving to Iowa, Florence met her future husband, Ben, and they were united in marriage on December 23, 1942. To this union, one son, Bernard, Jr. was born. Ben and Florence farmed near Essex, Iowa, until they moved to Shenandoah and later retired. For over 30 years, Florence worked at Mount Arbor Nursery.
Preceding Florence in death were her parents; husband of over 50 years, Ben; and five brothers, Silas, Everett, Garfield, Wallace, and Edgar Newman.
Florence is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bernard Jr. and Linda Veak of Essex; and grandchildren, Brenton of Portland, Oregon, Joel of Boston, Massachusetts, and Alison of Essex, Iowa; plus other relatives and friends.

There will be open viewing starting after 1:30 P.M. on Friday at the Chapel.
