Racine, Doyle L. - Doyle Leroy Racine, son of George Hugh and Ethel Marguerite (Howrey) Racine, was born on April 3, 1928, in rural Page County, Iowa. He passed away on Friday, February 1, 2008, at his home in Essex, Iowa, at the age of 79.

Growing up in Morton Township of Page County, Doyle attended White Cloud country school. He attended Shenandoah High School, graduating with the Class of 1946. Doyle, a lifelong farmer, started farming with his father before attaining his own ground to farm.

On October 8, 1950, Doyle was united in marriage to Kathryn E. Myers at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. To this union were born three children, Dennis, Douglas and Denise. Following their marriage they farmed west of Shenandoah in Fremont County for two years before moving to Essex. In addition to row crop farming, Doyle raised cattle and hogs in his early years. He also sold cars part-time in the winter at Select Motors in Shenandoah.

Doyle served in the Army Reserves with Company M in Shenandoah for several years around the time of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah and former member of the Masonic Lodge when they had Chapter in Essex. In his spare time, Doyle enjoyed golfing, boating and playing cards with family and friends. He also liked a good game of Solitaire.

Survivors include his wife of over 57 years, Kathy Racine of the home; his three children, Dennis Racine and his wife Lori, Doug Racine and his friend Laura, all of Essex and Denise Anderzhon of Shenandoah; six grandchildren, Johnathon, Jesselyn and Anthony Racine and Edie, Kurtis and Daniel Anderzhon; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, February 4, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of Comfort were given by Pastor Jerry Lamb. "How Great Thou Art" and "One Day At A Time" were song by Edie Anderzhon accompanied by Becky Hoenshel on the Organ. Janet Burnison attended the Memory Register. Caring for flowers was Elaine Ohnmacht. Casket Bearers were Kurtis Anderzhon, Daniel Anderzhon, John Racine, Tom Troxel, Calvin Kinney, and Les Kirchert. Interment was in Essex Cemetery in Essex. A memorial fund in Doyle's name is being established. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Radden, Pershing "Rad" - Pershing Henry Radden was born August 12, 1918 in Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Henry I. and Mary Margaret (Heesch) Radden. He passed away on Friday night, April 6, 2007 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Persh attended the Irwin Schools and graduated from Irwin High School as valedictorian of his class in 1936. In high school Persh was an outstanding basketball player. He joined the United States Navy and served from 1941 to 1946 during World War II on the destroyer U.S.S. Charles S. Sperry. He was married to Patricia Wilson who passed away in 1975. He then married Lois Hand who passed away in 1984. On December 17, 1995, Persh was united in marriage to Eleanor (Nordstrom) Peterson in Shenandoah.
Persh worked for the Green Bay Lumber Company in Irwin, Iowa, Atlantic, Iowa and then transferred to Shenandoah in 1948. Bob Taylor, a good friend of Persh, trained him for his manager position. He retired as District Manager of 16 United Building Center lumber yards in 1983. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. He had also been a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Elks Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two wives, Patricia and Lois.
Survivors include his wife Eleanor of Shenandoah, Iowa; two children, Carol Lee Radden of Seward, Nebraska and her fiancé Merlyn Rees of Shenandoah, Iowa, Ronald Radden and his wife Carol of Virginia; one grandson, Geoff of Virginia; sister, Helen Van Asselt of Irwin, Iowa; brother, Marvin Radden of Des Moines, Iowa along with other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at Selby-Kirsch Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah. Cremation will follow the service and inurnment will take place in the Rose Hill Cemetery at a later date. Visitation with the family present will be from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Monday evening, April 9, 2007 at Selby-Kirsch Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah. Memorials are suggested to the Shenandoah United Methodist Church.

Ramirez-Olivas, Juan Diego - Juan Diego Ramirez-Olivas was born February 19, 2008 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away on Tuesday afternoon, February 19, 2008 at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa. He is survived by his parents, Jorge Ramirez and Paloma Olivas and his two brothers

Ramsdell, Stuart Talmage - Stuart Talmage Ramsdell, 90, was born at his maternal grandmothers home in Redfield, S.D., August 17, 1919. After several weeks they moved to the family farm in Flandreau, S.D.

He was preceeded in death by his first wife, sister and parents. He married Shirlie Freeman Helsel August 16, 1985. He was a Major in the United States Army; a veteran and patriot serving God and his country.

He practiced medicine for over 50 years in Clarinda, Iowa, and as an anesthesiologist in Moline, Ill. His speciality was OBGYN, Family Practice and Anesthesiology. He was a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Society, AMA, Association of Physicians and Surgeons, the National Rifle Association and the First Evangelical Church in Moline, Ill.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Shirlie Helsel Ramsdell, his daughters Sheryl Muller, DeAnne Kremer (Tim), Teri Helsel-Bridges, Cathy Haley (Paul) and son David Helsel (Sue). There are 16 grandchildren, 18 great- grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Ramsdell, Fred W. - Fred W. Ramsdell, age 71, of Shenandoah, Iowa, passed away suddenly Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. Services are pending at the Selby Funeral Chapel.

Randolph, Velma M. Black - Velma M. Randolph, age 85, the daughter of Edwin and Lillie (Graham) Black was born July 17, 1920, on a farm south of Diagonal, Iowa, and passed away May 25, 2006, in Shenandoah, Iowa.
When Velma was about 12 years old she and her family moved to a farm near New Market, Iowa. There she attended country school and later graduated from New Market High School. After graduation she received her teaching certificate and taught school for one year. On May 24, 1940, she was united in marriage to Herman Randolph and to this union a son, Larry was born. Velma lived with her parents until Herman was discharged from the service. They lived in Shenandoah until 1947, when at that time they moved to Coin, Iowa, where they owned and operated the Randolph Café. After Herman’s death in 1993 Velma returned to Shenandoah. For many years Velma also assisted the customers at the Ladies Apparel Shop.
Velma was a member of the United Methodist Church in Coin and later in Shenandoah. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and was known to be an excellent cook with specialties like pies and salads.
Preceding Velma in death were her parents; husband; brother, Harold Black; and an infant granddaughter.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Jeanne Randolph of Shenandoah; grandson, Randy Randolph of Bella Vista, Arkansas; granddaughter, Jamie Randolph of Lake In The Hills, Illinois; and great granddaughter, Stephanie Randolph of Bella Vista. She is also survived by her sister, Marjorie Cupp of Madison, Missouri; and brothers and sisters in-law, Bill and Sharon Black of Shambaugh, Iowa, and Doyle and Barbara Black of Madison; plus other relatives and friends.

Ratliff, Mary Elizabeth Simonton - Mary Elizabeth (Simonton) Ratliff was born November 11, 1911 in Clarinda, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob D. and Adda E. (Roberts) Simonton. She passed away on Thursday morning, November 15, 2007 at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 96 years and 4 days.

Mary grew up in Clarinda and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1930. After graduation Mary worked at The Swift Company until she met the love of her life, Ralph Ratliff. They were marred on December 8, 1932 in Omaha, Nebraska and moved to Shenandoah where Ralph was employed by Earl May Seed Company. This union was blessed with one son, Richard, on January 24, 1937.

Mary was an avid reader, loved to bake and cook and spend time with Ralph and Dick. She is still famous for her homemade rolls. She was also a caregiver. She would drive to Clarinda for many years to care for her mother and she cared for Ralph when his health declined. Her home was always open to stray nieces and nephews, and she always hosted family reunions.

When Ralph needed extra help at the Maygold Building, Mary would work seasonally. She even drove a detassling machine. Mary and Ralph were charter members of the Nishna Valley Saddle Club and she was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Shenandoah.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ralph in 1989; and two sisters, Violet and Thelma. Survivors include her son, Richard of Shenandoah, Iowa; a brother, Hal Simonton and his wife Phyllis of Atlantic, Iowa; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Private family services were held on Saturday, November 17, 2007 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah with Rev. Alan Bash officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Congregational United Church of Christ in Shenandoah.

Rattenborg, Phillip Duane - Graveside Committal of Phil's ashes will take place on Saturday, September 20, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Essex Cemetery with Lorene Glant officiating. Everyone is invited to attend.

Phillip Duane Rattenborg, son of Johannes and Mable Carrie (Johnson) Rattenborg, was born on October 2, 1932 in Elkhorn, Iowa. He passed away June 14, 2008 in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 75 with his family at his side.

Having been born in Elkhorn, Phil attended elementary school there and then Junior High at Zion Lutheran School in Denison, Iowa. Phil graduated from Denison High School with the Class of 1950. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Elkhorn then confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa.

Phil served in the Army from 1950 through 1953 during the Korean conflict. He was stationed in Tokyo, Japan. On June 3, 1955, Phil was united in marriage with Shirley Clare Davis at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They resided in Denison for six years after their marriage. The couple briefly moved to Omaha, Nebraska before coming to Shenandoah, Iowa and then Essex, Iowa.

Phil worked for his father in Denison at the family feed store and then trained in Omaha in 1961 for the new field of data processing. He took a job with Earl May Seed and Nursery Company in Shenandoah and remained with the company 21 years before he changed careers, starting the Rattenborg Insurance Agency in Essex.

He was a member of the Lion’s Club in Shenandoah, serving as president for one term. Phil was the first male PTO President in the Essex Community School. He was also the Sunday School Superintendent and served on the Church Council at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah. He was a member of the American Legion Post #333 in Essex and served as treasurer for 20 years as well as the Essex Commercial Club where he served as treasurer for 25 years. Phil was also on the Southview Board of Directors serving as Chairman and the Essex Child Center Board of Directors.

Phil liked to travel and was an avid fisherman in his early years. He loved to attend his children’s and then grandchildren’s activities. You could always find Phil at the gym or ball field. He loved playing cards with family and friends. He also liked doing crossword puzzles.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Richard, in 1934. Phillip is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley; two daughters Christy Walker and husband Brian of Essex, IA and Becky Athy and husband Barry of Cedar Rapids, IA; grandchildren, Laura Thornburg and husband Jeff of Essex, IA, Alicia Thornburg and husband Matthew of Hastings, IA, Sarah Ripperger and husband Jeremy of Des Moines, IA, Brandon and Phillip “Cubby” Athy of Cedar Rapids, IA; great grandchildren, Colton, Quentin, Zachary and Jenna; sister, Judy Millard and husband Duke of Dumas, TX; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Essex. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Jerry Lamb. Special music sung by Stan Orton was "Just A Closer Walk With Thee", "The Lord's Prayer" and "On Eagles Wings". The congregation sung "Faith Of Our Fathers", "Because He Lives" and "Beautiful Savior". Organist was Judy Lundgren. Attending the memory register were Fred and Becky Streitenberger. Caring for the flowers were Vivian Walker and Elaine Lindburg. Ushers were Russ Hilker and Larry Glasgo. Escorting the casket were Butch and Dennis Huebner. Honorary casket bearers were Fred Streitenberger, Max Carlson, George Ross, Gary Johnson, Kenny Sheridan and Myron Ross. Casket bearers were Brandon Athy, Phillip "Cubby" Athy, Matthew Thornburg, Jeff Thornburg, Jeremy Ripperger, Brian Walker and Barry Athy. Military rites were accorded by the Weatherall-Hadden-Holmes American Post #333 of Essex. Cremation took place following the services. Memorials in Phil's name are being directed to the American Legion Post #333 Boys State Scholarship Fund or to the Essex Fire & Rescue. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ray, Lois Ann Merkle - Lois Ann Merkle was born into the loving family of Melvin and Laurel Merkle on February 14th, 1929, in Coin, Iowa. Ann was welcomed by an older sister, Phyllis, and was later joined by siblings Dick, Jane, and Bob. Growing up in rural Iowa, Ann attended North Star Country School through the 7th grade. She completed her high school education at Coin Consolidated High School, graduating with the class of 1946. After graduating from Platte Guard Business College in St. Joseph, Missouri, Ann returned to Shenandoah where she worked briefly at the Lakes Nurseries. Ann joined the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator in 1952, and remained employed in the offices in Shenandoah until retiring 30 years later in 1982. That same year, on February 13th, Ann was united in marriage to Clarence (Bud) Ray, Jr. This union expanded Ann’s family to include 3 step-daughters – Debbie, Diana, and Darla – and their families.
After retirement Ann kept busy with The Merkle Family Circle, bringing gospel musical entertainment to many people in the area for many years. She also enjoyed fishing trips to Minnesota, music in Branson, baseball in St Louis, anything and everything that included her love of family. She also kept busy with working part time at Central Surveys and participating in the Lion’s Club, where she served as president of the local chapter, and the Eagles Auxillary and Southwest Iowa Pioneers. Ann attended the Methodist Church in Shenandoah for over 40 years, sharing her beautiful voice in the choir there.
Ann left this world on February 3, 2009 after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents and her older sister, Phyllis.
Ann is survived by her husband, Bud, of Shenandoah; step daughters; Debbie (Ray) and Bill Hillman of Shenandoah; Diana (Ray) and Bob Kirk of Shenandoah; Darla (Ray) Mattes and friend Terry Mire of Hollister, Missouri. Grandchildren Sarah (Hillman) and Mikey Waite and Katie Hillman all of Shenandoah; Shelley Wiesen of Plano, Texas; Jeff Kirk, Todd Kirk, and Zachary Kirk all of Shenandoah, and Brandy Mattes of Hollister, Missouri; and 6 great grandchildren. She also leaves her sister, Jane Simms Mitchell of Urbandale, Iowa, brother Dick and Louise Merkle of Oakland, Iowa, brother Bob and Beverly Merkle of Altoona, Iowa, brother-in-law Carl Smith of Tabor, Iowa, along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Raymond, Ona Mae McDonald - Ona Mae McDonald Raymond was born January 9, 1916 on the family farm near Huron, South Dakota, the daughter of Carl and Elsie (Williams) Pamp. She passed away on Saturday afternoon, February 27, 2010 at The Ambassador Care Center in Sidney, Iowa at the age of 94 years, 1 month and 18 days.

She was one of ten children; one brother died at birth. The children attended country school and later attended school in Huron. The Pamp children were raised the old fashioned way; helping their parents on the farm. They belonged to 4-H Clubs and showed hogs and cattle at the South Dakota State Fair winning many prizes.

Ona Mae and Dale McDonald were married at Huron, South Dakota in 1933. Two children were born to this union, Richard Allen and Patricia Dale. Due to the terrible drought, they moved to Iowa with his father, Irv McDonald. The family moved to a farm near Essex, Iowa in 1934 and lived there until 1938 when Ona Mae and Dale moved to Coin, when Dale bought a feed grinder, which they had until 1945. The couple also owned a trucking business until 1965. Dale died on December 19, 1964.

The family was members of the United Presbyterian Church in Coin where Ona Mae taught Sunday school and was active in the women’s auxiliary. She was also active in the Royal Neighbor’s Lodge, holding numerous offices in the club. She helped with the town’s parades and other activities.

Ona Mae worked at a café in Coin for 15 years as well as the old Elk’s Club. After Dale’s death in 1964, she took a job at Montgomery Ward’s in Shenandoah and worked there until they closed in 1969.

Ona Mae married Leo Raymond on September 7, 1969 in Nebraska City. They lived on the family farm near Farragut until September 1983 when they purchased a house in Farragut. Leo continued to farm until 1988 when he retired.

She became very active in the community of Farragut; becoming a member of the Methodist Church, Merry Matrons Bridge Club and the Tuesday Bridge Club. She has also been a member of the Centennial Club, Garden Club and Golden Key Club. She also became active in War Mothers when they made lap robes for the Veterans Hospital and nursing homes. She joined the Corner Quilting Club in Shenandoah and has made over 60 quilts for her family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Elsie Pamp; her first husband, Dale McDonald; her son, Richard McDonald; sisters, Josephine Roberts and Ruth Heyer Anabel; brothers, Clint and George Pamp; step daughter, Cheryl Peterson.

Survivors include her husband, Leo Raymond of Sidney, Iowa; her daughter, Patricia Foutch of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Susan and David Nielsen, Angela Janke, Steve Foutch all of Omaha, Nebraska; great grandchildren Karyn and Joshua Nielsen, Eric Foutch of Omaha, Nebraska, Megan Foutch of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Chelsea and Cody Janke of Omaha, Nebraska; great-great grandson, Brayden Nielsen; step children, Patricia and Don Wallin of Houston, Texas; step grandchildren, Kelly Wallin, Charissa and Bob Foerschner, Lisa and Tim Omeara, Tami and Gene Glaser; step great grandchildren, Brandy, Shelby, Shaun, Matthew, Joshua, Jennifer and Allison; a sister, Kathie John of Chicago, Illinois; 2 brothers, William and Dorothy Pamp of Slayton, Minnesota, Robert Pamp of Fargo, North Dakota; along with many other relatives and friends.

Read, Robert A. - Robert A. Read, age 91, passed away February 19, 2007, at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa. A memorial celebration of Mr. Read's life will be held 1:30 P.M. Friday May 4, 2007 at Selby-Kirsch Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah. Inurnment with full military honors will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. A reception will follow at his residence, 404 South Center, Shenandoah, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Maribelle (Redfield) Read of Shenandoah; daughter, Robin Read Brunelli and husband Sam of Washington, DC; grandchildren, Dara O'Hara and husband, Tim, of New York City, New York and Tia Mahaffy and husband, Michael, of Greenwich, Connecticut, Courtney Briggs of Houston, Texas, Dr. Ashley Briggs and husband Jude Goetzinger of Brandon, South Dakota; nephew, Duane Sullivan and wife, Marlene, of Omaha, Nebraska and son, Chad Parkhurst; niece, Juli Briggs and husband, Jack, of Brandon, South Dakota; niece, Kathryn Gaver and husband, John, of Tampa, Florida; nephews, Lance Rydberg and wife, Kaye, of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Tom Rydberg and wife, Marsha, of Tampa, Florida, other close relatives and many friends.

Reavis, Maurice G. "Maury" - Maurice G. “Maury” Reavis was born on November 10, 1927 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Galen and Pearl (Croft) Reavis. Maury entered into eternal peace on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Maury was a lifelong resident of Shenandoah, as well as a graduate of Shenandoah High School. On October 2, 1949 he was united in marriage to Velesta Brown and the couple was blessed with 59 years of marriage.

During Maury’s working days he was employed by Iowa Power and Light for 37 years as a Journeyman Lineman and later as a manager. He also served on the Page County Board of Supervisors from 1985-1998. Maury was dedicated to the betterment of the community he lived and worked in, which is evident in the organizations and community groups in which he served. Maury was a member of the Elks Club, the Shenandoah Chamber of Commerce and the Optimist Club. He was a former member of the Shenandoah Board of Education and the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital Board.

Maury had a deep love and devotion to his family. He enjoyed riding around town on his scooter, making his famous caramels and then sharing them with family and friends, reading, golfing, and his monthly outings to the casino with the guys.

Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Velesta; children, Denny Reavis and wife Jean of Des Moines, IA and Danette Castle and husband Rex of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Tammy Nelson and husband Rick, Jay Reavis, Kristen Reavis, and Erin Castle; other relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Reece, Robert Sterling - Robert Sterling Reece was born on September 5, 1931 in Coin, Iowa, the son of Walter Helms and Mary Lorene (Sallee) Reece. Bob entered into eternal peace on Sunday, December 28, 2008 at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Bob lived in the Coin area for the majority of his life. He attended Coin Consolidated Schools and graduated with the Class of 1949. On November 19, 1951 Bob joined the United States Army and served his country until October 23, 1953. While in the service he served a tour in Japan.

On October 24, 1953 he was united in marriage to his beloved Phyllis Ruth Young. The couple was blessed with over 55 years of marriage. Bob farmed for the majority of his working days. He also worked for the United States Post Office as a substitute rural carrier for the Blanchard area. He later took on a full time position with the post office as the regular carrier for the city of Coin.

Bob was a longtime member of the Coin United Methodist Church and the Track Club in Lincoln. Bob enjoyed all varieties of sports, but was most fond of softball and track. He even competed in the Master’s Division of Track Events in his later years. He also had a passion for running and competed in many marathons, up until his late 50’s.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Joan Pauls, a son Thomas Duane Reece, and mother and father-in-law Joe and Ruth Young.

Those left to honor his memory include his devoted wife Phyllis of Shenandoah, IA; children; Ruth Reece of Columbia, MO, Regina Schulze and husband Arnie of Omaha, NE, Tim Reece and wife Nancy of Urbandale, IA and Faith Minihan and husband John of Newark, OH; grandchildren A.J. Schulze, Johnny Minihan, Hannah Minihan, Abby Minihan, Daniel Minihan, Sophia Reece and Thomas Reece; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 2009 at the Coin United Methodist Church with Rev. Buck Buckhahn officiating. Nina Stoner attended the memorial register while Frances Murphy and Barbara McCollum cared for flowers. Terri Murphy served as pianist. The congregation sang "Hymn of Promise", "Amazing Grace" was sung by the Minihan children and Faith Minihan offered a special tribute to her father by singing "I'll Meet You In The Morning". Serving as casket bearers were Ron Saye, Mike Green, Jerry Boylan, Gary Annan, Jim McCowen, Gerald Walter, Charlie White and Steve Armstrong. Honorary casket bearers were Hobert Gant and Byron Stoner. Burial followed in the Elmwood Cemetery

Reed, Donald Lee - Donald Lee Reed, son of James Olen and Bessie (Flynn) Reed was born on July 11, 1937, in Iowa City, Iowa. He passed away at his home in Shenandoah on Saturday, March 18, 2006, following a lengthy bout with cancer. Donald was 68 years of age.
Raised in Shenandoah, Donald received his education from the Shenandoah Community Schools. In 1961, Donald was united in marriage to Nola N. Truex-Smith. He was a cement mason by trade. Donald worked with his father, Ole, in masonry, Clarks-Stanley Cement, Carl Hale, Western Engineering and Blue Star over the years. He later worked in the lumberyard at United Building Center (UBC) and for Toby Kalkas for four years. Donald had last worked for D. A. Allbee & Son Heating & Cooling for 15 years.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, bird watching, cooking and helping people when needed.
Preceding Donald in death were his parents, Bessie and Ole Reed; twin brother, Ronald Reed and brother, Robert “Bob” Reed. Survivors include his children, Renee Robison of Keswick, Iowa; Randy Reed Smith of Erie, Pennsylvania and Annette Noska, in Texas; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Memorial services were held on Friday, March 24, 2006, at 7:00 p.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. The eulogy was given by Renee Robison.

Reed, Robert Benjamin - Robert Benjamin Reed, age 98, the son of Benjamin and Susan (Worthan) Reed was born October 10, 1906, in rural Clarinda, Iowa, and passed away July 2, 2005, in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Growing up on a farm near Clarinda, Bob graduated from Clarinda High School in 1926. On March 9, 1930, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Allen at the Methodist Church in Sidney, Iowa, and to this union, Jackie, Robert and Gary were born. They lived in Shenandoah, where through the years Bob was associated with Swift Creamery, Bloom’s Hatchery and Van Buskirk Grain, from which he retired. He was known to be a hard worker and a friend to many area farmers. Bob had a great interest in the weather and loved to play cards and visit with his friends. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah.
Preceding Bob in death were his parents and his wife, Dorothy.
Survivors include his daughter, Jackie Hughes and husband, Joe, of Imogene, Iowa; and sons, Robert A. Reed and wife, Betsy, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Gary Reed of Shenandoah. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren: Kim Hughes and wife, Becky, Kelly Hughes, Kevin Hughes and wife, Stacy, Karla Hughes, Karoline Hodges and fiancé Scott Carnes, Kenny Hughes and wife, Teresa, Kay Durfey and husband, Doug, Kolleen McGargill and husband, Dave, Karrie Hughes, Kirk Hughes, Kris Hughes, Robert Reed, Jr. and wife, Stacie, and Timothy Reed and wife, Mindy. Other relatives surviving are 28 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren plus other relatives and friends.

Regnerus, Susie Poortinga - Susie Regnerus was born July 31, 1919 in Columbus, Montana, the daughter of Richard “Dick” and Agnes (Boomsa) Poortinga. She passed away on Tuesday morning, April 28, 2009 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 89 years, 8 months and 28 days.

Susie attended school through the eighth grade. On May 9, 1941 she was united in marriage to Benjamin Regnerus in Chicago, Illinois. This union was blessed with three children, Sharon, George Robert and Jack.

Susie worked for the Samsonite Luggage company for over thirty years, retiring from their Denver, Colorado plant. She attended the First Baptist Church in Shenandoah and was a member of TOPS for many years. Susie enjoyed reading, word searches, walking, camping and taking cruises.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Benjamin; two brothers, Pete Poortinga and Clarence Poortinga; and a sister, Jeanette Hookstra.

Survivors include her children, Sharon Wentzel and her husband Lyle of Grant, Colorado, George Robert Regnerus of Colorado, Jack Regnerus and his wife Susan of Shenandoah, Iowa; four grandchildren, Tamora Bushman and her husband Carl of Denver, Colorado, Jeff Dufresne of Seattle, Washington, Stephen Miles and his wife Susan of Omaha, Nebraska, Scott Regnerus and Tammy Adams of Omaha, Nebraska; seven great grandchildren, Andrea Rea and her husband Sean, Jacob Bushman, Brittany Regnerus, Kailie Woodward, Madelaine Miles, Alexis Miles and Kayleigh Duggan; one great-great grandchild, Langston Duggan; one sister Theresa Tigchelaar of Michigan; along with many other relatives and friends.

Renshaw, Robert Sherman - Robert Sherman Renshaw entered into rest December 20, 2009 at Westridge Care in Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 85. Bob was born February 6, 1924 in Coin, Iowa. He was the son of Everett S. and Thelma (Warner) Renshaw.
Bob graduated Clarinda High School and attended the University of Iowa.
In school he held records in sports for career running yards, track, basketball and earned a football scholarship to the University of Iowa. He was a professional horse trainer, Roberts Dairy milk man, and oil company auditor in his working days. He was also in the United States Marine Corp. in 1943 during World War II and in1950-51in the Korean War.
When Bob wasn’t working he was an antique enthusiast. He also enjoyed restoring antique cars and training dogs. Bob enjoyed many fishing trips to various locations such as Canada, Minnesota, and Idaho. He enjoyed taking fishing trips with family and friends.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Darrell L. Hutchinson.
Bob is survived by his wife Irene of Clarinda, IA; children Robin Lynn Renshaw and husband Richard Swisher of Westhaven, CA; Randy Dee Burke, of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren Katie Irene Swisher; Emily Anne Burke and husband Troy Lock, Andrew Burke and wife Lisa; great grandchildren Taylor and Colby Lock; sister Mary Louise Hutchinson, Clarinda, IA; and many other family and friends.

Reser, Marcella Rae Greenfield - Marcella Rae (Greenfield) Reser, 59 of Denver, Colorado, formerly of Villisca, Iowa, died August 20, 2008, in Denver. Marcella was born March 18, 1949, in Clarinda the daughter of Murl and Reva (Cooney) Greenfield. She graduated from high school in 1967. She had most recently been employed as a secretary for the City and County of Denver Assessor’s office in Denver, Colorado. Marcella enjoyed creating colorful paintings that have been seen by many in the Denver area.
She is survived by her sister Marilyn and husband Alan Gridley of Villisca, IA; nieces: Trudy and husband Steve Swenson of Villisca, IA, Mindy Gridley-Laycock and husband Rob of Ankeny, IA, Lisa Huppe and husband Jean-Francois of Canada; nephew: Kennon & wife Katie Gunderman of Minnesota; grand nieces and nephews: Jackson, Cole, Felix, Delilah, and Penelope.
Marcella was preceded in death by her parents.

Richardson, Charles A. - Charles A. Richardson, 73, died July 18, 2009 at Taylor Hospice House
in Des Moines. Memorial services were held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church with private interment at Resthaven Cemetery.

Charles Richardson was born on a farm near Shambaugh, Iowa, January 30, 1936 to Horace (Shorty) and Ruth (Downing) Richardson. He grew up in Page County, Iowa with his siblings Robert, Mary and Ron where he graduated from Amity High in 1954.

Charles went to college at Simpson, Clarinda and Iowa State Teacher's Colleges, earned his teaching certificate and taught school in Gladbrook, Toledo, and Nevada, Iowa which he loved.

He changed careers in 1963 to sell insurance for New York Life, participated in the management training program and continued on to receive his Certified Life Underwriting degree. Later, he worked for
Traveler's Life, Transamerica and created the Richardson Agency where he continued working until 2005.
Charles married Barbara (Hill, now Boyle-Smith) in 1958 and had two children, Jill and Chris. Chris is married to Cynthia and has a son, Jake.

Charles divorced Barbara in 1976 and married Dixie Brooks in 1977.

He continued to live in West Des Moines where had been a member of the Des Moines Golf and Country Club and attended West Des Moines United Methodist Church. Chuck enjoyed golfing, music, and his friends and neighbors in West Des Moines and the Mits Wits Sunday School class.

Richardson, Ricky "Rick" L. - Ricky “Rick” L. Richardson, age 50, the son of Ivan and Wava L. (Wright) Richardson, was born February 15, 1954, in Shenandoah, Iowa, and passed away March 23, 2004, at his home in rural Shenandoah.
Growing up in Shenandoah, Rick received his education in the Shenandoah school system graduating from high school in 1972. From 1986 to 1997, Rick operated the Richardson Construction Company specializing in ag related construction, building grain bins and steel buildings, tiling fields, operating a bull dozer, and selling and installing roofing materials. Rick’s work experience led him to selling cars and trucks for Hawkeye Ford, installing grain bins and overhead doors for McNeilly Steel Buildings, operating tractor trailers for Frank Hammons Trucking and presently was a truck driver and farm hand for Mark Simmons Farms and Tiemeyer Trucking.
Rick enjoyed the outdoors, raising hunting dogs, fishing and hunting and was a member of the Swamp Hunting Lodge. He was a man who appeared gruff on the outside but who was soft hearted. He loved his family and friends.
Preceding Rick in death was his father, Ivan, in 1987.
Survivors include his mother, Wava Richardson of Shenandoah; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene and Rose Richardson of Adel, Iowa and Charlie and Connie Richardson of Clarinda, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews, Michelle Richardson, Molly, Nick and Macy Benson, Matt and Emilee Richardson plus other relatives and many friends.

Richardson, Robert Eugene - Robert Eugene Richardson was born January 27, 1926 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Frederick Bertram Richardson and Genevieve (Howard) Richardson. He passed away on Wednesday morning, July 9, 2008 at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 12 days.

He grew up in Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1944. After high school, Bob served his country in the United States Army. On February 27, 1949, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Elaine Johnson at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah. This union was blessed with four children, Robert Michael, Charles Patrick, John Steven and James David.

In 1953 Bob and Dorothy, along with Dorothy’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Johnson of Essex opened the J and R Furniture Store in Shenandoah. They have enjoyed serving the people of Southwest Iowa, Northwest Missouri and Southeast Nebraska for over 50 years. In 1969, Bob and Dorothy purchased a farm east of Shenandoah where he raised cattle and hogs, as well as row crops. Bob and Dorothy also built and remodeled many houses in Shenandoah.

Bob was a huge motorsports fan, especially enjoying auto racing and motorcycle racing. He was very supportive of all his son’s and grandson’s racing endeavors.

Because of his Army service, he was a very proud Veteran of the Armed Services, serving in combat. He was very active in designing and building the Veteran’s Memorial at Bogart Park in downtown Shenandoah. He came up with the idea, helped raise the funds and saw the project through to completion. He had been a member of the VFW Post and the American Legion both in Shenandoah.

He was a faithful member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, serving on various committees and groups. He also served Emmanuel as it’s treasurer for a time. He installed the carpet in the sanctuary, as well as helping to install the air conditioning in the building.

He loved his family greatly and he would support any activity with which his children and grandchildren were involved. He grandchildren were his greatest hobby in the past several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Fred Richardson, Jr.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Shenandoah; his children, Mike Richardson and his wife Jolene of Franklin, Tennessee, Charlie Richardson and Lorely Burgduff of Shenandoah, Steve Richardson of Shenandoah and Lori Balke of Beatrice, Nebraska, Jim Richardson and his wife Niki of Shenandoah; four grandchildren, Charles Richardson and his wife Heather of Niota, Tennessee, Andy Richardson of Shenandoah and Nicki and Michele Richardson of New York City, New York; two sisters, Elizabeth Mullins and her husband D.B. of Shenandoah, Betty Tyner and her husband Donald of Creston, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends.

Richardson, Wava Lavaun Wright - Wava Lavaun Richardson, age 76, the daughter of Clark and Gladys (Foster) Wright, was born October 29, 1929, at Bartlett, Iowa, and passed away December 30, 2005, in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Growing up in the Thurman, Iowa area Wava attended and graduated from the Thurman Consolidated School. On July 30, 1949, Wava was united in marriage to Ivan Richardson in the First Christian Church parsonage. To this marriage Gene, Charlie and Rick were born.
Wava first worked at the Union Carbide Plant in Red Oak, Iowa, and later part time at Henry Fields Seed and Nursery Company. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Shenandoah. She enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren and also her friends. She and Ivan enjoyed having their family and friends join them for picnics in the timber at their farm. Wava was known to be a very kind and gentle person.
Preceding Wava in death were her parents; husband, Ivan in 1987; and son, Rick Richardson in 2004.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Rose Richardson of Adel, Iowa and Charlie and Connie Richardson of Clarinda, Iowa. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Michelle Richardson, Molly Benson, Matt Richardson, and Emilee Richardson; and two great grandchildren, Macy and Victoria Benson; plus other relatives and friends.

Riley, Ella Marie Fuller - Ella Marie was born on May 25, 1915 in Hebron, Nebraska; the daughter of Henry and Charlotte (Scheiding) Fuller. Ella entered eternally into peace on Thursday; September 11, 2008 at her home in Essex, Iowa at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 17 days.
Ella’s early life was spent in Northern Nebraska and Northwest Missouri. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. She attended school in rural country schools in Northern Nebraska. On October 17, 1936 she was united in marriage to Lawrence Hayes Riley in Oregon, Missouri. The couple was later blessed with six children. Ella was a hard working wife and mother. She attended to her children’s needs and later in life enjoyed caring for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Holidays and special occasions were important at the Riley house and often celebrated. Ella was the “glue” that held the family together during times of trial and loss.
She attended the Presbyterian Church in Essex for many years and was also active in the various activities at Southview Village where she resided. Among her hobbies and interests were sewing, embroidering, cooking, playing cards, dancing, gardening and visiting with her friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lawrence, brothers Harvey Fuller and Norman Fuller, sister Lorene Fuller, beloved daughter Donna Kinney, son-in-laws Charles Kinney and Steve Scheiding and three cherished great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children; Paul Riley and wife Helen of Essex, IA, David Riley and wife Emma of Essex, IA, Robert Riley and wife Connie of Davenport, IA, Jerry Riley and wife Sharon of Pittsburg, KS and Linda Scheiding of Thornton, CO; 16 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great grandchildren; a brother George Fuller of St. Joseph, MO; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 14, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the Essex Presbyterian Church. Words of comfort were given by Pastors Jerry Lamb and Gary fuller. Special music was "One Day At A Time", "Beautiful Savior", "Precious Lord, Take My Hand", and "When I Get To Where I'm, Going". Memories of Ella were shared by Robert Riley and Calvin Kinney. Attending the register book were Brenda Riley and Karol Siekman. Usher was John Bengtson. Casket bearers were Curtis Riley, Patrick Riley, Jeff Riley, Rod Riley, David Riley and Calvin Kinney. Honorary casket bearers were Jim Alexander, Marge Alexander, Terri Allen, Harley Greenwalt, Todd Franks and Lysle Nelson. Interment was in the Essex Cemetery. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Rine, Louise Weaver - Funeral services for Louise Weaver Rine, age 81 of Shenandoah, formerly of Clarinda and College Springs, who died Monday, July 7, 2008 at the Gardenview Care Center, in Shenandoah, Iowa were held Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend Cole Edwards officiating. Visitation was held one hour prior to services on Thursday, starting at 1:00 p.m. Burial was held in the Memory Cemetery in New Market, Iowa.

Louise (Weaver) Rine was born on March 28, 1927, near Shambaugh, Iowa, the daughter of Ida Belle Weaver, and departed this life on July 7, 2008, at the Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah after a six month battle with cancer.
Louise grew up attending Mount Joy grade school, east of Shambaugh, and completed the 8th grade at the Shambaugh School. On September 25, 1948, she was united in marriage to Olin W. Rine in Shambaugh, Iowa. To this loving union four children were born, William Ray, who died shortly after birth; Edward (Ted), who passed away at 18 years of age; Shirley Mae, and James A.
Louise spent most of her life in Page County, Iowa, and some time in Mitchell, Nebraska. She loved to go camping, fishing and was a great St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan. She was also very fond of country music, or any kind of good music. She often attended many of the country music shows around the area. She even belonged to a music group, as a guitarist, for a few years that played for nursing homes in the area. Louise truly enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren.
Louise is survived by her daughter, Shirley Parish and husband Jim of Berryville, Arkansas; a son, Jim Rine and wife Mary of Coin, Iowa; five grandchildren, Kendra Crum and Kenny Crum of Shenandoah, Iowa; Amy Mays and husband Troy of Polk City, Iowa; Andy Rine and wife Tammy of Shenandoah, Iowa; and Jacob Rine of Coin, Iowa; and one great-grandson, Austin Mays, of Polk City, Iowa; along with other family members and friends.
Preceding Louise in death is her mother, a sister, her husband and two sons.
Although Louise will be greatly missed, Her love and inspiration will live on through her family.

Roberts, Betty Victoria "Rose" - Betty Victoria Roberts was born October 26, 1946 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Earnest Loren and Eleanor (Anderson) Rose. She passed away suddenly on Monday evening, June 8, 2009 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center at the age of 62 years, 7 months and 13 days.

Betty grew up and attended school in Carson, Iowa. She later attended Iowa Western Community College and Buena Vista University and obtained a bachelors degree in accounting. On November 1, 1985, she met Michael Roberts and they made their home in College Springs for the last 25 years.

Betty worked for Energizer Battery in Maryville for several years before retiring. She also did private accounting on the side. She enjoyed riding over the road with Mike in the truck and crocheting. Her true love was her family, especially her grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bob Rose and Jim Rose; and by her son-in-law, Jeff Wheelbarger.

Survivors include her husband, Michael Roberts of College Springs, Iowa; her children, Lincoln Smith and his wife Leah of Albertville, Minnesota, Clinton Smith and his wife Debbie of Loreto, Minnesota, Richard Longcor and his wife Reah of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, Melissa Gay and her husband Don of College Springs, Iowa, Michele Eden and her husband Lowell of Green Forrest, Arkansas, Monique Longcor of Vadnais, Heights, Minnesota; 15 grandchildren, Sean, Kyle, Jesse, Lexi, Quentin, Roshonna, Amber, Makayla, Kassie, Brianna, Michael, Victoria, Zack, Katie and Annie; a sister, Alice Pitt and her husband Mel of Council Bluffs, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends.

Rodriguez, Mauro - Mr. Rodriguez passed away on Saturday morning, July 25, 2009.

Following visitation, Mauro's body will be returned to his homeland in Mexico.

Rodriquez, Shyla Dennise - Shyla Dennise Rodriguez was born December 16, 1992 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of Terry Allen and Julie Dianna (Williams) Rodriguez. She passed away from injuries she sustained in an accident on Saturday afternoon, November 28, 2009 near Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 16 years, 11 months and 12 days.

Shyla grew up in Shenandoah and was currently a junior at Shenandoah High School. She had a love of art and enjoyed drawing. She also loved to listen to music. Most of all, she enjoyed taking pictures of herself with her cell phone and camera. She was a very caring person with a big heart.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, William Rodriguez and grandmother, Vida Williams.

Survivors include her parents, Terry and Julie Rodriguez of Shenandoah, Iowa; two sisters, Nina Tunnell and her husband Cody of Shenandoah, Iowa and Serita Rodriguez of Clarinda, Iowa; nephew, Richard Tunnell; a niece, Olivia Tunnell-Rodriguez; grandparents, Dennis and Karen Williams of Shambaugh, Iowa, Donna Lowery of Shenandoah, Iowa, Bobbie Rodriguez of Shenandoah, Iowa; her boyfriend, Kurt Ailerson; along with many other relatives and friends.

Rolf, Lois Eldora Adelung - Lois Eldora Rolf, Age 76, the daughter of Carl A. and Estelline (Peterson) Adelung, was born June 30, 1928, in Amherst, Nebraska and passed away December 25, 2004, in Omaha, Nebraska.
Growing up in rural Amherst, Lois was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She attended grade school at Immanuel Parochial School and Miller Public School in Watertown, Nebraska and graduated from Miller High School, Miller, Nebraska, in May, 1946 as valedictorian of her class. After graduation, she was associated as a sales clerk for the Brown McDonald Store in Kearney, Nebraska. In 1950, she and her two sisters moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where for twenty nine years she was employed at the Earl May Seed and Nursery Company.
On August 30, 1975, Lois was united in marriage to Richard Rolf of rural Shenandoah. They made their home in Shenandoah for twenty-one years before moving to the Rolf farm in rural Shenandoah. Being a country girl, she enjoyed being back on the farm. Lois took great pride in tending her flower gardens, yard, raising her pets and taking care of her home. She was a devoted member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Sidney, Iowa.
Preceding Lois in death were her parents. Survivors include her husband, Richard Rolf of Shenandoah; sisters, Wilda Brown and husband, Kenneth, of Shenandoah and Marie Beery of Gladstone, Missouri; niece, Vernelle Coffelt and husband, Jerry, of Kansas City, Kansas; nephew, Brent Beery and wife, Mindy of Chicago, Illinois; other relatives and many friends.

Roll, Violet - Violet Roll, age 82, was born at Coin, Iowa on July 17, 1926 the daughter of Orville and Opal Hipstey Roll.

She grew up in the Coin area where she attended school. At about the start of her grade school years she contacted measles of which there was no vaccine available. Her health was seriously affected and she lived at home until age 19, then she lived in hospitals and nursing homes.

She had been a resident of Glen Haven in Glenwood for several years and most recently had lived at the Manor of Malvern at Malvern, Iowa of which she passed away June 11, 2009.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Opal; two sisters; nieces and nephews.

Surviving are one sister Rose Kelly of Lincoln, Neb., one cousin, Max Preeo of Las Vegas, Nev., and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services for Violet will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the Clarinda Cemetery at Clarinda, Iowa. The Tradition Walker-Merrick Funeral Home of Clarinda in charge of arrangements.

Rope, Darrell Clark - Darrell Clark Rope, son of Rudolph Martin Henry Rope and Lena Sophia (Jabker) Rope, was born on January 27, 1933 near Yorktown, Iowa on the family farm. He passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2007 at Midlands Hospital in Papillion, Nebraska, at the age of 74.

Darrell’s entire life was spent in the Yorktown and Clarinda area. He received his education from St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Yorktown. He told everyone he grew up during the time when Yorktown was a “boom town”. As a young man, trapping and hunting took up a large part of Darrell’s time. Farming was a passion for Darrell from a young age. Upon completion of his education, Darrell was engaged in full-time farming. On November 7, 1954, Darrell was united in marriage to his sweetheart, Katherine Marie Cahill at the Christian Church in Clarinda. Following their marriage they lived on the homeplace farm near Yorktown. It was there that they raised their three children, Randy, Ron and Risa. Darrell farmed all of his life and loved every bit of the farm life. He particularly enjoyed anything related to tractors, raising cattle and going to the local cattle sales. In the early evening as part of his daily routine, Darrell could often be found driving around the area watching for deer. He also recalled fond memories of driving a truck for Paul Mueller of Yorktown, hauling livestock to the Omaha and St. Joseph Stock Yards. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Yorktown. Darrell served as an Elder of the church and served on the school board for the Lutheran School while his children attended school there.

Preceding Darrell in death were his dear wife, Katherine; parents, granddaughters, Kelsey Marie Gladman and Rachel Marie Rope; and an infant brother, LaVerne Rope. Survivors include his three children, Randy Rope and his wife Sheri of Coin, IA, Ron Rope and his wife Denise of Clarinda, IA, and Risa Gladman and her husband Rob of Clarinda, IA; four grandchildren, Sara (Rope) Honnold and her husband Brad of Clarinda, IA, Scott Rope of Omaha, NE, Katelyn Gladman and Morgan Rope, both of Clarinda, IA; sister, Bernadine Knuckolls of Sun City, AZ; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 7, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Yorktown. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Nathan Dudley. Organist was Karen Anderson. Congregational hymns were "Lift High The Cross", "Beautiful Savior" and "I Know My Redeemer Lives". Attending the memory register were Marcene Von Dielingen, Venita Muller and Mary Etta Otte. Ushers were Robert Wright and Lee Brooke. Casket bearers were Scott Rope, Brad Honnold, Jack Rope, Greg Muller, David Linke and Ron Knight. Honorary casket bearers were Lloyd Muller, Roger Linke, Russell Nelson, LeRoy Nelson, Charlie Drennen and Dale Hartstack. Interment was in the Polsley Cemetery near Yorktown, Iowa. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials are being directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or to the Clarinda Lutheran School.

Rope, Wendell Leroy - Wendell Leroy Rope was born in the Page Center area on July 8, 1928, the son of Leroy and Edna (Herzberg) Rope. He grew up in that area where he attended St. Paul’s Parochial School at Yorktown. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Yorktown where he was baptized, confirmed, and married. He had been married to his wife Wilma Hagedorn for over sixty-one years. Wendell was a lifelong farmer and held offices of Elder and School Board member. He was on the Shenandoah Co-op Board and a member of the Page County Cattlemen. Feeding cattle was his special interest along with farming his beloved Century Farm.
Wendell is survived by his wife Wilma; three children, Paula Gail Mier and husband Dennis of Clarinda, Ramona Kanne and husband Marty of Kansas City, and Jack Rope of Clarinda; twelve grandchildren, Matthew Mier of Clarinda, Wendy McCoy and husband Jeff of Coin, Paula Gray and husband Kory of Clarinda, Marissa Gruber and husband Paul of New Market, Leah Kanne, Joel Kanne, James Kanne, Julia Kanne all of Columbia, Missouri, Jenni Pullen and husband Ragan of West Des Moines, Clinton Rope and wife Lindsey of Manassas, Virginia, Clay Rope of Clarinda, and Aaron Sunderman of Omaha; Seven great-grandchildren, Stone, Ashley, Kamryn, and Paige McCoy, Madalynne, Darah, and Kelby Gray; two sisters, Marcene Von Dielingen of Clarinda, Edith Kamprath and husband Elmer of Eagle Grove, Nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents and twin sisters Violet Goecker and Viola Buesing.

Rorebeck, Russell Oscar "Bud" - Russell Oscar "Bud" Rorebeck was born July 9, 1920 near Essex, Iowa, the son of Ross and Bonnie Belle (Clemens) Rorebeck. He passed away on Saturday evening, July 25, 2009 at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 89 years and 16 days.

Oscar grew up and lived in the Bedford, Norwich, Clarinda and Shenandoah areas his entire life. He attended school through the 10th grade when he started farming with his father. He farmed most of his life. He also worked construction when the interstate system was being built.

Oscar loved antiques, especially old cars and tractors. He also had a love for horses. After his retirement, Oscar was a familiar face at area farm sales and auctions.

Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Alta Rima, Gustia Arnold and Dorothy Stringfellow; a granddaughter, Christie Lynne Fichter; and a son-in-law, Ronald Fichter.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Dorothy Rorebeck of Shenandoah, Iowa; his children, Joanne Alba of Omaha, Nebraska, Sharon Fichter of Glenwood, Iowa, Carole Reising and her husband Dennis of Granite Falls, North Carolina, Karen Lane and her husband David of Shenandoah, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the Kirsch Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah with Pastor Gary Fuller officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Shenandoah. Visitation with the family present took place on Saturday morning, August 1 from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Rosser, Howard Joseph - Howard Joseph Rosser was born on September 5, 1921 in Gregory, South Dakota, the son of Elmer N. and Carol (Dewey) Rosser. Howard entered into eternal peace on March 26, 2010 at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah following a brave battle with cancer.

Howard’s early years were spent in Gregory, South Dakota, where he attended school and graduated. On March 17, 1945 he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country with pride until he was honorable discharged on July 23, 1946. He lived in California for a number of years before returning to Shenandoah. While residing in Shenandoah he worked for Eaton Corporation for some 10 years.

He was a member of the Danh R. Weller Masonic Lodge #765 in Torrance, CA, The Order of the Eastern Star #260 in Gardena, CA, The American Legion in Gregory, SD, the Shenandoah Eagles Club #3849, AMVETS in Shenandoah and the Shenandoah Elks Lodge #1122. Some of his interests included fishing, hunting and spending time with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Eldora Rosser and a sister Jeanette Blackstone.

He is survived by his loving family Dorothy Cleaveland, Lalaynie and Frank Newsome, Ray and Gwen Markut, Jody Markut and children Hayden and Evan, Nicki and Ben Noordhoek and children Brandon, Brooke and Emily, Corey and Amy Markut and son Xander; other family and dear friends.

Rowe, Everett D. - Everett D. Rowe, son of Cecil Elmer Rowe, Sr., and Lydia Emily (Neeman) Rowe, was born one of fifteen children on April 11, 1926 in Cook, Nebraska. He passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 13 days.
Everett attended school and graduated from Percival High School. Everett was most proud of his involvement in and winning of a scrap drive which allowed him to travel to New Orleans and christen a ship called the “Samuel Jordan Kirkwood”.
In August of 1945, Everett, enlisted in the Army and served overseas towards the end of World War II. On December 19, 1945, while home on furlough, Everett was united in holy matrimony to Violet Lorraine Brown.
After his return from duty, Everett farmed and worked for Snyder Motors in Shenandoah. He later drove trucks for Heartland Express before being hired as a boilerman at the Eveready Battery Co. in Red Oak. He retired after 30 years from Eveready. In his earlier years Everett spent his free weekends working for his brother Cecil at the Conoco station in Shenandoah.
They lived in Page and Montgomery counties moving to Red Oak in 1988. While he could Everett enjoyed traveling, camping, hunting and fishing. Once house bound, he worked on his coin collecting hobby, further developed his taste for “good down home cooking” and enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune.
Everett was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Cecil Jr., Elmer, James and Jerry Rowe; sisters, Wilma McNeilly, Velma Dell Rowe, Margaret Rowe, Pearl Corporen and Lydia Jean Rowe. Survivors include his wife, Violet Rowe of Essex; daughter, Barbara Allocco and her husband Leonard of Omaha, NE; son, Dwayne Rowe of Essex; four grandchildren, David Allocco of Seattle, WA, Juanita Allocco of Omaha, NE, Jami Kussman and husband Robert , and Josh Vanderpool and wife Heather, all of Lexington, NE; four great grandchildren, River, Brooklyn and Hunter Kussman and Dalton Hollander, all of Lexington, NE; three brothers, Virgil Rowe of Fremont, NE, Ralph Rowe and wife Faye of Omaha, NE, and Darrell Rowe of Barstowe CO; two sisters, Lorraine Cox and husband Marvin of Northboro, IA and Anna Belle McMillan of Phoenix, AZ; several nieces and nephews and greats; other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah with Rev. Arlan Hoskins officiating. Katie Gresham attended the memorial register. Special music for the services was shared by Laurie Lathrop who performed "Just Inside The Eastern Gate" and "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Other special music for the service included "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". Serving a casket bearers were Jim Alexander, Tom Anderson, J.R. Seering, Randall Johnson, Bill Long and Randy Vanderhoof. Burial followed in the Essex Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Weatherall-Hadden-Holmes American Legion Post #333.

Royer, Faye Evelyn Bateman - Faye Evelyn Royer was born January 19, 1919 in Farragut, Iowa, the daughter of William T. and Elva (Gard) Bateman. She passed away on Friday, November 13, 2009 at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 25 days.

Faye lived all her life in Page and Fremont Counties. She attended Monroe Township School, graduating from 8th grade as an honor student. She attended Tabor High School through the 9th grade then decided to work for various farm families instead. On August 29, 1938 she was united in marriage to Harry E. Royer in Creston, Iowa. This union was blessed with 6 children, Carroll, Russell, Phyllis, Virgil, Barbara and Gary.

The couple lived on his parents farm in rural Essex until 1950 when they moved south of Shenandoah to farm for Sjulin Farms. In 1967, they purchased their farm in rural Coin, spending the rest of their lives there.

Faye enjoyed playing cards at the Bricker Senior Center as often as possible. She also volunteered at Gardenview Care Center helping with bingo for over 20 years. Since 1950, Summit United Methodist Church was a big part of her life as was managing and maintaining the farm after her husbands death in 1980.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harry; three sons, Russell Royer, Virgil Royer, Gary Royer; a grandson-in-law, David Maley; two sisters, Vera Lindsey and Wilma, Mrs. George Hadden, Mrs. Robert Barnes (special to all), Mrs. Leonard Dwinger; brothers and sisters-in-law, Homer and Minnie McBride, Reuben and Mae Johnson and Frank and Alice Royer.

Faye is survived by her children, Carroll Royer and his wife Donna of Las Vegas, Nevada, Phyllis Wolford and her husband Derry of Shenandoah, Iowa, Barbara Houtz and her husband Bob of Clarinda, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Donna Royer of Glenwood, Iowa; brother-in-law, Joe Lindsey of Red Oak, Iowa; special friends, Pauline Martin of Coin, Iowa and Irma Seallee of Fairbault, Minnesota; along with many other relatives and friends.

Rumery, Lois Maxine Phillips - Lois Maxine Rumery, age 83, the daughter of Robert and Grace (Malcom) Phillips was born September 8, 1922 near Farragut, Iowa, and passed away January 27, 2006, in Omaha, Nebraska.
For a short period of time Maxine lived with her family east of Farragut. They then moved near Randolph, Iowa, where Maxine attended school graduating from the Randolph High School in 1939. On April 22, 1944, she was united in marriage to Tom Rumery at Seneca, Kansas, making their home in the Randolph area. To this marriage, Rodger, Connie and Kristie were born.
Providing a warm home atmosphere for her family was important to Maxine. Always putting her family first is what she did. She was known to be a great cook, cooking family favorites like angel food cake and gooseberry pie. She enjoyed her flowers and was a hard worker, often driving the tractor and working along side Tom on the farm.
Maxine was a member of the Randolph Presbyterian Church serving on the Presbyterian Ladies Aid. She was also a member and served as Worthy Matron of Eastern Star.
Preceding Maxine in death were her parents; grandson, Jeffrey Jones; sisters, Irene Benedict and Marie Biggerstaff; and brother, Earl Phillips.
Survivors include her husband, Tom of Shenandoah; son and daughter-in-law, Rodger and Linda Rumery of Chehalis, Washington; daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Fred Davis of Shenandoah and Kristie and Roger Jones of Westboro, Missouri. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Kent Rumery, Greg Rumery, Rob Davis, Chelli Green, Stacey Jones, Dena Skinner and Jason Jones; 21 great grandchildren; sister, Vera Bateman of Sidney, Iowa; sister-in-law, Ellen Phillips of Randolph; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Runyan, Ivan - Ivan Runyan, 85, passed away Feb 27, 2009 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center.

He was born May 1, 1923 near Texhoma, Oklahoma to Thomas and Margie (Scott)Runyan. After graduating from high school in Grove, Oklahoma in 1940, employment brought him to Page County. He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946 after which he purchased the farm that he would operate until his retirement in 1993. He married Esther Farquhar on June 14, 1947. They were blessed with Dan, Carolyn, Martha, and Randy. As a member of the College Springs United Presbyterian Church he served in many capacities. Community Service activities included Director in Farm Bureau, Page County Extension Council, and Red Cross Board. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking and helping others.

He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Runyan and Margie Scott Runyan, his brother Glen Runyan, brothers in law, Dick Farquhar and Ben Cooper; sisters in law Beth Cooper and Marian Farquhar; his son in law Claude Dawkins, and an infant daughter Martha Jean.

He is survived by Esther, his wife of 62 years, brother Walter and Rosemary Runyan of Elgin, Illinois, brother Wayne and Vena Runyan of Westminster, Colorado, brother Don and Bessie Runyan of Gravette, Arkansas, sister Thelma and Steve Young of Plano, Iowa, and sister in law Virginia and John Burch of Villa Park, Illinois and sister in law Grace Farquhar of Loveland, Colorado. Also surviving are his children and their families Dan Runyan and Chris Lohry of Lincoln, Nebraska, Carolyn Dawkins of Shenandoah, Iowa, Martha and Randy Towne of Lafayette, Colorado, Randy Runyan and Kim Wyatt of Beijing, China and North Liberty, Iowa. Great Grandchild C.J. Dawkins lives in Chicago, Illinois. Twenty six nieces and nephews counted Ivan as a favorite uncle.

His ready smile and wit were enjoyed by all who knew him.

Runyon, Phyllis Lorrene Strange - Phyllis Lorrene Runyon, daughter of Floyd Lee Strange and Francis Lorrene (Fahseler) Strange, was born on July 13, 1951, in Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 4, 2008, at her home in Shenandoah at the age of 56 years, 5 months and 21 days.

Her early life was spent in the Shenandoah and Farragut, Iowa areas. She received her education in the Shenandoah, Farragut and Blanchard, Iowa, School Districts. On January 21, 1967, Phyllis was united in marriage to Richard Dean Runyon in Omaha, Nebraska. They resided in the Shenandoah area following their marriage. To this union five children were born, Tammie, James, Dick, Dannie and Bob. Phyllis worked as a Certified Nurses Aide (CNA) for 20 plus years. She loved going to Swap Meets. Phyllis was an avid NASCAR fan with her favorite car and driver being #8, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. A huge country music fan, Phyllis attended Fan Fair in Nashville, Tennessee several times. Traveling brought great enjoyment also. One of her favorite memories was riding the Ducks in Branson, Missouri. Most of all, Phyllis loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them and reminiscing of days gone by.

Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents, Floyd and Francis Strange. Survivors include her lifelong partner, Richard Runyon of Shenandoah, IA; daughter, Tammie Comstock and her husband Dan of Shenandoah, IA; four sons, James Runyon and his wife Erica, Dick Runyon and his wife Sheila and Dannie Runyon, all of Shenandoah, IA, and Bob Runyon and his wife Suzanne of Indianola, IA; 13 grandchildren; one great grandchild; sister, Norma Bailey and husband Larry of Clarinda, IA; four brothers, Floyd Strange and wife Donna of Essex, IA, James Strange of Sidney, IA, David Strange and wife Sharon of Randolph, IA, and Allen Strange and wife Joy of Randolph, IA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; other relatives and many friends.

Rust, Derald Hayden - Derald Hayden Rust was born August 14, 1942 in Solo, Missouri, the son of William Ray and Zella Naomi (Erwin) Rust. He passed away on Wednesday morning, June 17, 2009 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha at the age of 66 years, 10 months and 3 days.

Derald grew up in the Cabool, Missouri area and graduated from Cabool High School in 1960. He enlisted in the United States Navy right out of high school and served for 22 years. Upon retirement, he attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in education. On December 30, 1967, he was united in marriage to Arula Kaighin in Springfield, Missouri. This union was blessed with two children, Shawna and Marci. Derald was most recently employed as a science teacher at the Shenandoah High School. He was a member of MOAA and FRA.

Derald was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Felicia Lynn Rust; and a sister, Gail Rae Rust.

Survivors include his wife, Arula (ARLA) of Shenandoah, Iowa; two daughters, Shawna Rust of Cabool, Missouri and Marci Davis and her husband Scott of Lincoln, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Skyler Cunningham, Dylan Cunningham, Emma Davis and Connor Davis; two sisters, Renee Pearson and her husband Randy of Cabool, Missouri and Karen Rust of Cabool, Missouri; along with many other relatives and friends.

Ryan, Donald J. "Junior" - Donald J. "Junior" Ryan, , age 78, of Shenandoah, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2006, at his home in Shenandoah. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Ryan of Shenandoah plus his children and other relatives.

Rydberg, Eleanor Winifred Lundstedt - Eleanor Winifred (Lundstedt) Rydberg, 82, was born on June 10, 1925 on a farm outside of Hepburn, Iowa as the second child of H. Elmer and Winifred (Nelson) Lundstedt. She passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Eleanor lived in the Hepburn area during her early childhood until the family moved to Red Oak where Eleanor attended high school. Eleanor graduated from Red Oak High School in 1943 and worked at the Red Oak Express as a proofreader until her marriage.

Eleanor was united in marriage with Kenneth Rydberg on February 5, 1950 at the Red Oak Covenant Church in Red Oak, Iowa. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Rural Essex. Eleanor was a beloved homemaker, mother and volunteer.

She was a member of Faith Covenant Church in Essex, Iowa and a longtime member of Study and Service and the Maple Grove Club. Eleanor led a women’s community Bible study for many years. She taught Sunday School for many years and filled a variety of positions at Faith Covenant Church. She also was devoted to her children.

Preceding Eleanor in death were her parents, Elmer and Winifred Lundstedt; brother, Maurice Lundstedt; and brother-in-law, Curtis Rydberg. Casket Bearers were Carl W. Erickson, Joel B. Rydberg, Neal M. Rydberg, Scott K. Erickson, Michael F. (Kate) Banasiak, Bradley F. (Lena) Freese. Interment was in the Essex Cemetery, in Essex, Iowa. Memorials are being directed to the Faith Evangelical Covenant Church in Essex.

Rydberg, Roger E. - Roger E. Rydberg, age 65, the son of Eldon and Julia (Rice) Rydberg was born August 14, 1941, in Shenandoah, Iowa and passed away November 13, 2006, in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Receiving his education in Storm Lake he graduated from Storm Lake High School and continued his education at Buena Vista University where he graduated with a degree in business.

Roger began his career working for the federal government as an auditor. Although he was amiable and friendly, Roger was not happy being away from Storm Lake and his family. He returned to Storm Lake, where he lived the remainder of his life. He had been employed with Reckoff Oil and Rosdail’s and also loved helping his friends on their farm.

For many years Roger selflessly cared for his ailing mother and later his father who was declining in health. No son could have been more loyal and faithful than Roger. He sacrificed his opportunities of a career, wife, and children of his own for his family.

Roger had an interest and appreciation for Ford and Mercury cars of the 1950’s and 1960’s vintage. He also enjoyed attending stock car races during that period of time. He inherited his father’s grace, agility, and coordination. Roger’s ability at badminton was extraordinary. Roger could “float like a butterfly” across the court and suddenly sting his opponent with smashing returns.

Roger is survived by cousins: John Rydberg of Omaha, Nebraska, Ann (Rydberg) Eades of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Ronald V. Rydberg of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Linda (Rydberg) Nodes of Omaha, Nebraska, Kathryn (Rydberg) Gaver of Tampa, Florida, Thomas H. Rydberg of Tampa, Florida, Lance Rydberg of New Orleans, Louisiana, Carolyn (Rasmussen) Mount of Farragut, Iowa, and Wayne Rasmussen of Sidney, Iowa, plus many friends. Roger was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Roger’s life was held 11:30 A.M. Friday, November 17, 2006, at the United Methodist Church Chapel in Storm Lake with Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Inurnment was held 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 18, 2006, in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Iowa, with Reverend Jim Gubser giving the committal service. Rydberg, Virginia Nordstrom Read - Virginia Nordstrom Rydberg, age 93, the daughter of Thomas Henry and Themis (Nordstrom) Read was born June 27, 1911, in Shenandoah, Iowa, and passed away February 4, 2005, in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Growing up in Shenandoah, Virginia graduated from high school when she was sixteen. After high school she attended Grinnell College during the height of the Great Depression, where she graduated with a double major in English and Drama. She was overjoyed when she received her first teaching job at Oakland High School.
Because the school board would not employ married female teachers, Virginia secretly married Glen Rydberg, her high school sweetheart. They enjoyed a long happy marriage and to this union Kathryn, Thomas and Lance were born. While they lived in Shenandoah, Glen worked in the field seed business and Virginia wrote scripts for radio broadcast. They then moved to Omaha in 1949, where they went into the nursery business. Virginia was a curious person who read constantly. While living in Omaha, she often gave book reviews for various clubs. She was a member of Mu Sigma, the Omaha Art Guild and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
In 1979, Virginia and Glen bought a home in Redington Beach, Florida, keeping their Omaha residence until Glen died in 1982. After moving to Florida, Virginia was invited to join the Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College (ASPEC) whose members included college presidents, admirals, and executives of major companies. Amiable Virginia was also elected to the ASPEC Senate.
Preceding Virginia in death were her parents, Thomas Henry and Themis Read and her husband, Glen Rydberg.
Survivors include her children, Kathryn Rydberg Gaver and Thomas Henry Rydberg of Tampa, Florida, and Lance Rydberg of New Orleans, Louisiana; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Maribelle Read of Shenandoah; grandchildren, Jeffrey Gaver, Heather Gaver Mandel, Glenn Gaver, Kristin Rydberg, Read Rydberg and Kathryn Rydberg; five great grandchildren; plus other relatives and friends.
