Eberle, William S. "Bill" - William S. (Bill) Eberly was born August 28, 1924 at Clarinda, Iowa to Andrew and Carrie Elizabeth (Ross) Eberly. He graduated Clarinda High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a scout for the 88th Mechanized Cavalry in Europe. Following his discharge he was married to Polly Ann Jones March 24, 1946 at Hiawatha, Kansas. Bill worked at Clarinda Oil, Opitz Motor, Nelsons Meat, Steel Tanks, and Hy-Vee in the meat department retiring in 1986. Following retirement he travelled to see friends and family. One of Bill’s favorite hobbies was flower gardening.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Polly Ann in 1984, siblings Merle Eberly and wife Ruth, Marie Thompson and husband Owen, Helen Eberly, Mildred Wilcoxson and husband George, Edith Wallace and husband Ernest, “Toots” Lutie Myers and husband Herbert, Robert Eberly, and sister-in-law Edna Eberly.

He is survived by his children: Gerald Eberly and life partner Allan Davis of Omaha, Nebraska, Terry Eberly and wife Susan of Clarinda, Jeff Eberly and wife Jodi of Clarinda; brother, Roy Eberly of Ogilvie, Minnesota; grandchildren Tim Eberly and wife Toni of Clarinda, Kevin Eberly of Shenandoah, Iowa, Brittany Eberly of Clarinda, and Kenny Johnson of Clarinda; great grandchildren Samantha Noel, Forrest Lee, Emmanuel Xavier, Addison Montgomery (any day), Kylen Raean, and Gage Alexander; nieces and nephews.

Eddy, John Ray - Graveside services for John Eddy, age 38, of Clarinda, Iowa, who died Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at his home in Clarinda, Iowa were held Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend John Clark officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

John Ray Eddy was born December 9, 1969 in Santa Clara, California, the son of Clarence Eddy and Margaret (Smith) Eddy. John grew up in Santa Clara, California. He was a quiet and reserved person as a child with beautiful red hair. John graduated from Santa Clara High School. He attended DeVry University at Coppel, Texas.

John’s profession was electronics assembly and computer technician. He was very knowledgeable on the computer and enjoyed helping others with their computer skills. John loved everyone, especially children. He had many interests; he enjoyed traveling including a special trip to Honduras, biking, hiking and fishing. John enjoyed nature and was very conscientious about the environment. He also enjoyed cooking and was a very good cook and a good person.

John is survived by his parents, Clarence and Margie Eddy of McKinney, Texas; brothers, Roger Lowery of El Dorado, California, Steve Eddy and wife Staci of Morgan Hill, California; aunt, Betty Smith of Clarinda, Iowa; cousins, Jack Gower of Clarinda, Iowa and Robert Smith of Red Oak, Iowa; uncles, Bill Eddy of Rocklin, California, Wayne Eddy of Madera, California, Bob Smith of San Jose, California; aunt, Polly Wiggins of Indiana; grandmother, Pauline Eddy of Madera, California; nephews, D.J. Edwards, Darwin Duane "Pete" - Darwin Duane (Pete) Edwards, November 24, 1925 – August 13, 2008.
Pete was born in Clarinda, Iowa to Mamie and Arnold (Cappy) Edwards on November 24, 1925. He was the oldest of seven children.
He married Betty Lou Parks of Siam, Iowa on September 13, 1950. They had five children: Linda, Rick, Terry, Larry, and Cindy. Betty preceded him in death October 21, 1973.
He was married to Alice Jeannette Stafford Sieving in November of 1977. She preceded him in death April 5, 2000.
Pete was a long time resident of the Clarinda area. Having spent his childhood during the Great Depression, Pete was no stranger to hard work. He had his first job at 6 years old, picking up potatoes at the Berry Farm. During his youth he also delivered papers, caddied at the Clarinda Country Club and worked for the Model Dairy. He quit Clarinda High School in 1943 to join the Navy. He served in the South Pacific on the aircraft carrier USS Takanis Bay. One of his proudest moments was when he received his honorary diploma from Clarinda High School many years after the war.
Pete and Betty owned the Clarinda Produce for a number of years. He also worked for the Clarinda Agency, and Peter Keiwitt Construction out of Omaha. In 1970, they purchased Betty’s Café in Gravity.
After Betty’s death, Pete returned to Clarinda where he cared for his ailing father and commuted to work on the Cooper nuclear station in Nebraska. While married to Jeannette, they lived in Clarinda, Texas, Missouri, and Red Oak. While in Clarinda, he also worked at the courthouse. Pete has been residing at the Eiler house for the past four years.
Pete was a Member of the First Christian Church, the American Legion, the VFW, the Amvets, and the Odd Fellows.
He was a selfless, high spirited family man who worked hard his whole life, but always willingly gave whatever he had to those he thought needed it more. This included his love, his time, and his material possessions. We will miss you Dad.
He is survived by 4 children: Linda Aberg (Eric) of Amity, Oregon; Rick Edwards (Jean) of Omaha, Nebraska; Larry Edwards (Cindy) of Gravity, Iowa; Cindy Coleman (Kevin) of Gravity, Iowa: daughter- in-law Renee Edwards of Fernley, Nevada; a sister, Iris Jean Carpenter of Marshall, Missouri; a brother, Jack Edwards of Omaha, Nebraska; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters-in-laws, Cloris, Martha, and Connie; nieces; nephews; and his Eiler House Family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; son Terry of Fernley, Nevada; 4 brothers: Larry, Rex, Joe, and Dick all of Omaha, Nebraska.
Pete will be missed by his friends and family, too numerous to mention.

Edwards, Frances Theodore "Ted" - Frances Theodore Edwards, “Ted,” was born to Tom and Agnes (Cook) Edwards on December 27, 1914 near Clarinda, Iowa, the third of six boys.
He graduated from College Springs High School in 1933. At the age of nineteen he went to Denver, Colorado where he worked as a bellman at a major hotel. Following that he worked in Scottsbluff, Nebraska harvesting potatoes and sugar beets and then returned to Iowa to farm. Ted was married to Fern M. Vogel on January 7, 1938 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Ted farmed most of his life and he and Fern lived sixty-five years on their farm east of Blanchard, Iowa where they enjoyed having family and friends visit whenever possible.
Ted was active in the Masonic Lodge and was Past Master of Emanuel Lodge #405 of Blanchard. He was a member of the Moila Shrine, St. Joseph, Missouri and had served as a member of the West Nodaway School Board. Both he and Fern were members of the Eastern Star.
He would often recite poetry, readings and sayings he learned in school or had read. He enjoyed sharing these with his daughters while they were growing up and also his grandchildren who found them very interesting.
Ted passed away Friday, December 5, 2008 at The Gardens, in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Bob and his wife Gertie, Dean and his wife Blanche, Bill and his wife Arlene, and Jack and his wife Goldie, and sister-in-law Pauline Edwards.
He is survived by his wife, Fern of Kansas City, Missouri; daughters Dorothy Snipes and husband Kelley of Kirksville, Missouri, Norma Mackey and husband Glenn of Braddyville, Iowa, Mary Richmond and husband John of South Sioux City, Nebraska, and Lois King and husband Terry of Platte City, Missouri; eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; one brother, Max of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Frances Ted Edwards, 93 of Blanchard, will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Blanchard United Methodist Church with interment at the Blanchard Cemetery. Edwards, Jack "Action Jackson" - Jack “Action Jackson” Edwards, age 75 years, of Omaha, Neb., was born in Clarinda, Iowa, July 16, 1933, and passed away April 6, 2009, in Omaha, Neb. He is preceded in death by: parents, Arnold and Mamie Edwards; brothers, Pete, Joe, Rex, Richard and Larry Edwards; son, Ronnie Edwards. Survived by: wife, Connie Edwards; sons, Randy Edwards; Rodney Edwards, wife Melita; Robert Edwards, wife Rena; sisters, Iris Jean Carpenter; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Efta, Thomas Bernard John Sr - Thomas Bernard John Efta, Sr., son of Vincent James and Lillian (Wagner) Efta, was born on August 26, 1935, in Wagner, South Dakota. He passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at his home in Essex, Iowa, at the age of 72.

Tom grew up in Wagner, South Dakota, where he attended the Wagner Public Schools until the age of 15. At that time he shared work experiences with many older siblings in Indiana, Illinois, South Dakota and points in between. In addition, he helped with the construction of the Fort Randall and Gavins Point dams in South Dakota. From 1954 to 1956 Tom was a Green Beret in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict and served as a field radio repairman. He later moved to Seattle, Washington, where he built wing jigs for Boeing.

On February 9, 1957, Tom was united in marriage to Vivian Teresa St. Pierre in Seattle. Tom pursued his love of teaching after completing his teacher’s degree. He taught in numerous schools in the Midwest while raising his family of four children. They resided in Washington, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, back to South Dakota and back to Nebraska before finally settling in Essex, Iowa. In all, they moved 28 times during their marriage. Tom was also a skilled craftsman and cabinet maker. Throughout his teaching career he also moonlighted as a carpenter. After his teaching days ended he pursued his second career as a carpenter full-time before retiring in 1994. Tom enjoyed rock hunting, coin collecting and woodworking.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Vivian T. Efta in July of 2002. Survivors include his children, Tom Efta, Jr., and his wife Audrey of Hastings, NE, Lori Johnson and her husband Darwin of Emerson, IA, Greg Efta and his wife Heidi of Longwood, FL, and Rebecca Efta of Essex, IA; five grandchildren, Sarah Johnson, Maggie, Mackenzie and Melinda Efta and Amber Bell and her husband Justin; other relatives and many friends.

Graveside services were held on Monday, February 25, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. The Musical Selections chosen for the service were "Amazing Grace" and "In The Garden". Casket Bearers were Rod Efta, Darwin Johnson, Jim Mastny, Bill Hodge, Paul Swigart, and Eugene Palmer. Military rites were accorded by the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88. A memorial in Tom's name is being established.

Eitzen, Flinton Emil - Flinton Emil Eitzen, son of Emil and Alvah (Kame) Eitzen, was born on February 14, 1927, in Hamburg, Iowa, and entered into rest on August 1, 2007, at the Montgomery County Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa.

Flinton’s early life was spent growing up in the Morton Township of Page County, better known to the locals as the “Eitzen Corner”. He attended Centennial Country School and Northboro High School.

On June 18, 1950, Flinton was united in marriage to Darlene (Koch) at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Northboro, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple resided in Riverton, Iowa and later returned to the Coin area.

Flinton was a farmer all his life. He was also a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Shenandoah. Flinton collected Model A and Model T cars as a hobby.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his infant sister, Martha. Flinton is survived by his wife, Darlene of Coin; daughter, Linda and husband Reldon Stoops of Shenandoah; daughter, Deborah and husband Wade Potter of Shenandoah and son, David Eitzen of Millard, Nebraska. Grandchildren; Laura Kincannon and fiancé Shawn Everidge, Bethany and husband Christopher Maronde, Thomas Stoops, Clete Jones, Amber Eitzen and Brandelyn Eitzen; sister Freda Koster of Huntington Beach, California; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 4, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Jerry Wagoner. Organist was Linda Micheel. Eitzen, Harold Rudolph - Funeral services for Harold Eitzen, age 89, of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010 at Westridge Quality Care and Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa, were held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010 at St. John Lutheran church, Clarinda, Iowa with Pastor Daryl Tompkins officiating. Visitation with the family was 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010 at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda.

Harold Rudolph Eitzen was born September 11, 1920 on a farm near Bethesda, Iowa to Herman Eitzen and Emma Sunderman Eitzen. He was baptized September 26, 1920 by Pastor Jaebker and confirmed March 25, 1934 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Harold attended Immanuel Lutheran School and graduated from Clarinda High School. He was untied in marriage to Marie Sunderman at Immanuel Lutheran Church, April 27, 1947. They are blessed with five children, Karen, Gerald, Patricia, Jacob and Roselle.
Harold was a lifelong farmer and proud cattle feeder. He helped his brother Walter farm near Villisca for a year, and then Harold and Marie moved to a farm southeast of Clarinda, East River Township, in 1948 and made their home there until 1986 when they moved to town. In his youth, Harold took great pleasure in playing softball. As he matured he reveled in watching his children and grandchildren play sports. In his spare time he was entertained by friendly games of cribbage, pitch and throwing quarters. Old Harold had a quick wit and a knack for making people smile.
Harold was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, Clarinda, Iowa, serving on several different committees. He was a lifelong member of the Page County Cattleman’s Association, receiving Father of the Year award in 1979 as well as the Longevity Award in 2007. He served as a member of the East River School Board for many years including a term as president. Harold also received the Honorary Chapter Farmer award from the Clarinda FFA.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wilbur and Loyd Eitzen; sisters, Leona Robberts and husband Orville, Margie Moore and husband Charles; sister-in-law, Toni Eitzen and nephew, Merle Robberts.

Loyd Harry Eitzen was born August 14, 1922 near Bethesda, Iowa, the son of Herman Eitzen and Emma (Sunderman) Eitzen. He was the fifth of seven children. Loyd was baptized September 3, 1922 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Clarinda, Iowa and confirmed April 5, 1936. Loyd was a life long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Loyd grew up on a farm near Bethesda and attended Clarinda High School.
Loyd enjoyed farming and the lifestyle it provided. He was especially passionate about raising Black Angus cattle. Loyd had lived in the Clarinda/Villisca area most of his lifetime. He had spent a number of years at the Page County Home and had been a resident of Good Samaritan Care Center, Villisca prior to moving to the Lenox Care Center in 2005.
Loyd is survived by his brothers, Walter Eitzen and wife Ruth of Villisca, Iowa, Harold Eitzen and wife Marie of Clarinda, Iowa, Raymond Eitzen of Villisca, Iowa; many nieces; nephews and many friends.
Preceding Loyd in death were his parents; brother Wilbur Eitzen; sisters, Leona Robberts and Marjorie Moore; nephew Merle Robberts; brothers-in-law, Orville Robberts, Charles Moore; sister-in-law, Toni Eitzen.
Loyd will be missed by his entire family. The memories that were made by Loyd throughout the years will remain in our hearts forever. May God grant comfort and peace to those that mourn his passing.

Elder, Maxine Vivian Pennock - Maxine Vivian Elder the daughter of Loren Thomas Pennock and Margaret Ann Lewis Pennock, was born at Ogden, Iowa on March 29, 1918 and passed away on January 25, 2006 at Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age of 87. Mrs. Elder spent most of her early life in Des Moines, Iowa attending and graduating from North High School in Des Moines, where she was known for her athletics. She was united in marriage to Wilson A. Elder on July 8, 1937 at Bethany, Missouri. After their marriage they resided in Des Moines, moving to Memphis, TN living there from 1950 until 1956, when they moved to Shenandoah where her husband ran an oil station. In 1971 they moved to Bettendorf, IA., moving back to Des Moines in 1974. After the death of her husband Maxine moved back to Shenandoah to be closer to family. Maxine was a loving mother, wife and homemaker. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star. Her special interest were her children, grandchildren, sporting events. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wilson, and granddaughter, Jane Kaylene Elder. Survivors include her children, Robert and wife Mary of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Kaylene Dyke of Shenandoah, Iowa, and William Elder and wife Diana of Essex, Iowa; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren, along with other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held on Friday, January 27, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Mark Doland. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home of Shenandoah was in charge of arrangements.

Elliott, Floyd Eugene - Floyd Eugene Elliott was born on March 4, 1932 in rural Essex, Iowa, the son of Alfred Wesley and Josephine (Anderson) Elliot, Sr. Floyd entered into eternal peace on Sunday evening, March 14, 2010 at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Floyd was raised in the Essex community and attended the Essex Presbyterian Church as a young man. At the age of 18 he joined the service, but later received a medical discharge. He then enlisted in the National Guard and served for 5 years before enlisting in the United States Army. During his three year enlistment Floyd served his country with pride in Korea and Vietnam. Returning home, he lived for a short time in Kansas City, Omaha, and Red Oak before settling in Blockton in 1972.

On May 9, 1976 he was united in marriage to Nina Philpott in Grant City, Missouri. Floyd helped Nina raise her four children Luther, Theresa, Diane, and Lloyd. Floyd was a model race car enthusiast who had over 70 models in his prized collection. He was also a member of the DAV Des Moines Chapter #20 and enjoyed attending many conventions. Other passions included watching stock car races in Corning, fishing, and playing with his grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Earl, Lawrence and Alfred Elliott; sisters Betty Jean Allshouse, Eldora Elliott, Martha Ann Josephson, and Ruth Cox; sister-in-law Mary Elliott; and brother-in-law Harley Foreman.

Ellison, Harold Lavern - Harold Ellison, age 92, died Monday, April 28, 2008, at Goldenrod Manor where he had resided for 2 years. Funeral services were held May 2, 2008 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend John Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Old Memory Cemetery, near New Market, Iowa.
Memorials may be directed to the Old Memory Fund. Harold Lavern Ellison was born July 2, 1915 to Floyd Irvin Ellison and Lena Blanche (Slaight) Ellison in East River Township. Harold lived all of his life in East River Township un til his move to Clarinda in 2000. Harold attended High Prairie country school and often told of the challenge of living across from the school and doing noon chores at home while the other children played outside. He also dealt with the school teachers often boarding with his parents and had many stories to tell of those experiences. He rode his horse to New Market no matter the weather to attend high school there and with the promise of a gift of a team of horses, Harold graduated in 1932. He married a beautiful country school teacher Marcella Laub in 1940 and the marriage was blessed with three daughters and one son.
Harold was born to the farm families of the Ellison’s and the Slaights who were homesteaders in Page County and he continued the proud farming heritage throughout his life. After his move to town, he was a great help to his son who still resides on the family farm. Harold was one of the generations of Americans who saw the changes of farming through the cycles of horse power to the horse power of tractors. His teenage years spanned the great depression of the 1930’s strengthening his drive and character. Harold and Marcella bought their farm and raised their family through many hard times including World War II and the extreme droughts of the 1950’s. He was a great story teller and vividly described what today’s generation can only read in history books.
Although he was tied to the daily chores of farm life, he had several great adventures in his life. He took a road trip to the west in the 30’s with a few close friends. Harold and Marcella traveled to both coasts on trips and also traveled to England, Scotland, and Wales to visit Janice’s family in the service. His family surprised him with a hot air balloon ride for his 70th birthday and he was able to glide above the lands that he had lived on and farmed throughout his life. Harold enjoyed bowling, attending the Clarinda A’s games, square dancing, and card playing with friends. He was a township trustee and member and President of the East River School Board. He enjoyed the Page County 4-H activities of his children, grandchildren and great-grandson.
Preceding Harold in death are his wife in 2002; parents; brother Marvin Ellison and granddaughter Julie Fallon. Survivors include his daughters; Janice Fallon and husband Edward of Omaha, Nebraska; Connie Price and husband Desmond of Omaha, Nebraska; Marcia Franchett and husband Philip of Shawnee, Kansas; and son Lyle Ellison and wife Jeannie of Clarinda, Iowa. Survivors also include grandchildren: Ed Fallon and family of Craig, Colorado; Michaelle (Kinser) Lancaster and family of Woodbridge, Virginia; Danielle Kinser and son of Ridgecrest, California; Richard Kinser and family of Overland Park, Kansas; Stephen Kinser of Overland Park, Kansas; Megan Kinser of Shawnee, Kansas; Heath Ellison of Des Moines, Iowa; Heidi Fuccio and family of Omaha, Nebraska; Stacy Ellison and daughter of Oakland, Iowa; Pam (Price) Van Hook and family of Omaha, Nebraska; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Endicott, Betty Lou Parmerlee - Betty Lou Endicott, daughter of John L. (Jack) and Sylvia (Borman) Parmerlee, was born on February 23, 1930, in Independence, Missouri. She passed away on Friday, July 7, 2006, at Sister James Nursing Home in Yankton, South Dakota, at the age of 76, following a bout with pancreatic cancer.

Her early life was spent in Independence before moving to Shenandoah, Iowa. Betty later moved to the Northboro area where she graduated from Northboro High School. After high school she moved to Kansas City where she found employment with Bell Telephone. In Kansas City, she met and later married Robert W. Endicott on August 23, 1952. They spent much of their married life in Kansas City, where they raised their three children Sylvia, Robert and Mildred.

Betty and Robert later purchased the “Midway” Restaurant, garage, filling station and machine shop located on the corner of Hwy 333 and Hwy 59, in rural Northboro. Together they owned and operated this business for many years. They resided there until just recently when Betty was diagnosed with cancer. To be closer to their daughter, Sylvia, they moved to Yankton, South Dakota. Betty spent her final days at Avera Sacred Heart, Majestic Bluffs, Sister James Nursing Home.

Preceding her in death were her parents and other family members. Survivors include her husband of over 53 years, Robert W. Endicott of Yankton, SD; daughters Sylvia Sullivan and husband Larry of Yankton, SD, and Mildred K. Cole of Papillion, NE; son Robert L. Endicott and his wife Debbie of Kingsville, MO; three grandsons, Rod Cole, Jr., of Omaha, NE, William Robert (Bill) Cole of LaVista, NE, and James Cole of Ft. Sill, OK; great grandson, Garrett Kasinac; special family friend, John Mansfield of Yankton, SD; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 10, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home is Shenandoah, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Keith Finlay, Brett Craven and Gary Vogt. Special music was done by Cheryl Morton, Katie Burner and Barbie Torrey. Nancy Finlay attended the memory register. Casket bearers were Art Jones, Rodney (Rod) Cole, William (Bill) Cole, Claude Harris, Brandon Morton and Jack (John) Mansfield. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Endicott, Robert William - Robert William Endicott was born on March 4, 1924 in Pittsburg, Kansas; the son of Frank Clifford and Christina (Tygart) Endicott. Robert passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2009 at the Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, South Dakota.

Robert attended school and graduated from machinist college in Kansas. He later served on the Civilian Conservation Court. On August 23, 1952 he was united in marriage to Betty Parmerlee. The couple made there home for many years in Kansas City where they raised their three children Sylvia, Robert and Mildred.

Robert worked as a machinist for 18 years with the Atomic Energy Commission. During his time with the commission he was assigned duties associated with the space program. Following his work with the Atomic Energy Commission, Robert and Betty moved to Northboro, Iowa where they purchased the “Midway” Restaurant, garage, filling station and machine shop located on the corner of Hwy 333 and Hwy 59, in rural Northboro. Robert enjoyed his work and the many friends that he and Betty made.

Robert was a member of the Blanchard Masonic Lodge. He also was an avid outdoorsman. He had a passion for fishing and hunting pheasants. He could often be found picking fresh fruit from the trees or hunting mushrooms. Robert also had quite the sweet tooth. He always had a candy dish outside his door at the nursing home to share with others. Some of Robert’s other interests included dancing, poetry, music, and animals.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife of 53 years, Betty, two brothers Frank Clifford, Jr. and Howard Abner, and a sister Helen Dorothy.

Those left to honor his memory include his children; Mildred K. Cole of Papillion, NE, Robert L. Endicott and wife Debbie of Kingsville, MO and Sylvia Endicott-Sullivan and husband Larry of Yankton, SD; special family friend John “Jack” Mansfield of Yankton, SD, grandsons; Rod Cole, Jr. and Bill Cole and wife Vivian both of LaVista, NE and James Cole and wife Lindsey of Papillion, NE; great-grandchildren; Garrett Kasinac and Madalyn Cole; sister Mildred Carsel of Kansas City, MO; brother Theodore Endicott and wife Jackie; nieces, nephews, other relative and friends.

Engle, Claude Eugene - Claude Eugene Engle, Sr. age 84, the son of Harold E. and Martha F. (Fisk) Engle, was born May 20, 1920, at Corydon, Iowa, and passed away January 19, 2005, in Omaha, Nebraska.
Growing up on a farm near Corydon, Claude graduated from the Millerton Independent High School in 1938. After high school, in Kentucky, he worked in construction, but mainly as a mason. Due to his mother’s illness, Claude moved back home to be near his mother. For two years he studied blue print drafting at Carbondale, Illinois. After his mother’s death he joined the United States Army on July 9, 1942, serving during WWII with the 35th and 25th Infantry Division in the South Pacific for 3 years.
On September 20, 1946, in Seymour, Iowa, Claude was united in marriage to Betty Jane Clark and to this union Claude, Mark and Martha were born. In 1969 they moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where Claude continued to work for the USDA as a warehouse examiner for 33 years, retiring in 1986.
Claude was a member of the American Legion Post #68 in Corydon, where he had served as Post Commander. and later transferred to Post #88 in Shenandoah, He has been a member of the Masonic lodge since 1960, serving as Master at Corydon in 1991 and at Friendship Lodge #379 in Farragut, Iowa, as Master of the lodge in 1992. Claude was a member of the First Baptist Church in Corydon, where he was baptized on June 7, 1964.
Claude enjoyed gardening, providing his family and friends with fresh vegetables. He loved to fish and was an avid reader, especially reading Louis L’Amour western novels.
Survivors include Claude’s wife, Betty Engle of Shenandoah; sons, Claude Engle, Jr. of Shenandoah and Mark Engle of Marshalltown, Iowa; daughter, Martha Engle Pratt and husband, Gordon, of New Market, Iowa; grandchildren, Melissa Engle, Sarah Caltrider, Micah Engle, Beau and Alex Hansen, Aaron, Austin and Andrea Pratt; and five great grandchildren. Also surviving is a step sister, Delores Henry of Des Moines, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Collins, Mary Lou Casey, Donna Dutton, Linda White and Virginia Jellison all from Seymour, Iowa, and Helen Clark from Joplin, Missouri; plus numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Eyberg, Melvin Elmer - Melvin Elmer Eyberg was born May 28, 1918 on a farm seven miles northeast of Treynor, Iowa, the son of John Emil and Anna (Henneke) Eyberg. He passed away on Friday morning, September 5, 2008 at the Living Community of St. Joseph Care Center in St. Joseph, Missouri at the age of 90 years, 3 months and 8 days.

In 1931 he graduated from a country school having completed the eighth grade at Washington Township #5, in Pottawattamie County. In 1935 he graduated from Treynor High School and in 1937 he graduated from Hebron Junior College in Hebron, Nebraska. At Hebron Junior College Mel was given the Balfour Award as the Outstanding Student for 1936-1937.

Drake University in Des Moines received his attention for one semester in 1938 to study radio announcing and in 1940 one semester of college was taken at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Additional short courses of study were obtained from the Jo Keith School for Radio Announcers in Chicago, the Dale Carnegie Course and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Working on a farm occupied his time until September 1941, when he moved to Shenandoah and became a radio announcer for radio station KFNF. One year later his work was interrupted by World War II when he was drafted into the Army Air Force for 3 ½ years.

Following basic training at Sheppard Air Field in Texas, Eyberg attended an Air Force Radio School in Madison, Wisconsin for 13 weeks and a Radio and Radar Technical Training School in Boca Raton, Florida for five weeks, following which he was assigned to the 100th Medium Bombardment Group of the 13th Air Force as a radio and radar technician. He served overseas 2 ½ years in the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Morotai and on the island of Palawan in the Philippines. While on the island of Palawan, he was also a radio announcer and newscaster for the Armed Forces Radio Station WVTS.

Following his discharge from the service in December 1945, Mel rejoined radio station KFNF in January 1946, as chief announcer.

Marriage to Alice Pauline Sickler of Shenandoah, the daughter of Marion L. and Elizabeth (Bessie Farrington) Sickler, took place on November 2, 1947 in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah. To this marriage two children were born, Melvin John of St. Joseph, Missouri and Carla Jean of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In 1949 Mel transferred to the Henry Field Seed and Nursery Company. In 1952 Mel was promoted to the head of the customer service department. He became the company’s first personnel manager in 1961, a position held for 12 years. In 1964 he was named to the corporate staff as assistant secretary and in 1974 was named a vice-president of Henry Field’s. He resigned for retirement in 1981 following 36 years with the company.

During his residence in Shenandoah he was active in school, church and community activities. He served as President of the following organizations: Luther League, Central School PTA, Southwest Iowa Lutheran Brotherhood, Emmanuel Lutheran Church Council, Toastmasters Club, Lions Club and United Fund. In 1958 he was appointed chairman of the Citizens Committee in their school bond drive for the building of the L.A. Logan Elementary School and the annex to the junior-senior high building. In addition, he was chairman of or a member of several church, school and civic committees on local, state and national levels. Also, he was a Boy Scout Cub Master for three years, a Den Leader and a Sunday School Superintendent.

During the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s much time on weekends and evenings was devoted to acting as toastmaster or speaking to clubs, organizations and church groups. The Shenandoah Education Association conferred a Distinguished Service Award on Mel in 1969 in recognition for his sustaining interest in and contribution to public education.

For his work in the Lions Club he was presented the Outstanding Lions Award in 1968. In 1976 he was again honored by the Shenandoah Lions Club when he was presented the Outstanding Citizen Award, the first person to receive the dual award.

In 1945, Mel joined the American Legion and has been a member for 63 years. Eyberg is a member of the Shenandoah Emmanuel Lutheran Church and Treynor American Legion Post #725. In 1980, Mel was honored to be named Emeritus Member of the Personnel Association of the Midlands.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Pauline; three brothers, George, Herman and Adolph; and a sister, Mary (Eyberg) Schroeder.

Survivors include his son, Melvin J. Eyberg and his wife Jo of St. Joseph, Missouri; daughter, Carla Eyberg and her husband Tom Foucher of Albuquerque, New Mexico; “Little Sister” granddaughter, Mary Ann Spooner of Spotsylvania, Virginia; sister-in-law, Marie Eyberg of Treynor, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends.
