I was born September 13, 1918 in Page County, Iowa to my parents, Ted and Mary Lubben. I was the third of four siblings (Howard, Martha and Wilma). I was baptized at a small age at Yorktown Methodist Church, where we attended church and Sunday School regularly.
Mt. Zion was a small country school close to our home and it is where I attended school through the eighth grade I then attended Clarinda High School.
On November 24, 1936 I was married to Fred Craig in my parentÂ’s home. We lived and farmed in the Yorktown and Norwich area for 30 years. We had 3 sons; Larry, Eugene and Keith. All were born in the Norwich area. We were active in the Norwich Methodist Church. I helped with Bible School each year and was a member of the United Methodist Women, I also was a leader with Mary Jean Krull of Tarkio Blue Bell 4-H Club.
In 1966 we bought a farm in the Coin area. We continued to farm and enjoy our family which had now grown to include daughters-in-laws, grandchildren (Shelly, Scott and Jeff) and now great-grandchildren (Dustin, Jacob, Tyler and Carson). I especially enjoyed special times with my grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Reading, playing with them and watching their high energy level was a pleasure.
We were active in the Coin United Methodist Church. I helped with Bible School, was President of the United Methodist Women for four years and also chairman of the Coin Bazaar for six years. I also helped with many church suppers, funeral luncheons, wedding receptions and reunions. I was especially proud of the Coin Culinary Cookbook that I was able to help put together.
Special memories are also cherished of the many friends and relatives that have been dear to me. The Norwich Social Hour, Maxwell Reunion, and special visits with friends and family were important in my life.
I also feel blessed to have gone to Germany on two occasions to see my relatives (on my daddyÂ’s side), and to also host them in our home on two occasions as well. I have continued a close correspondence with them for over 45 years.
I have been truly blessed with family, friends and especially with my relationship with God. Know that I am at peace and with my loved ones that have gone before me. Remember too, that I will wait for you!

Regan, Robert Francis "Doc" - Robert Francis “Doc” Regan, son of Thomas Edward and Bertha W. (Saner) Regan, was born on August 25, 1928 on the family farmstead northeast of Imogene, Iowa. He entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 7, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa following a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 81.
Being the youngest of 12 children, he made sure not to go unnoticed. While growing up in Imogene, he and his brothers spent much of their time playing baseball, hanging out with friends and being a part of the St. Patrick’s Church community.
Doc attended St. Patrick’s Academy (1935 to 1945). And one year somewhere in the middle of those dates, Doc attended country school. He was once quoted as saying “I got smarter than the nuns in ‘45 so I quit school”. Shortly thereafter, he entered the Navy at the young age of 17.
Doc began serving his country while attending boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago. He entered into active service with the United States Navy on January 24, 1946. During his time in the service, he served on the U.S.S. Topeka, U.S.S. Iowa and U.S.S. Helena. Doc’s highest rank achieved was Seaman First Class. He received the World War II Victory Medal and Phillipine Independence Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 28, 1947.
On March 31, 1948, Doc was united in marriage to the love of his life, Monica Joyce Martin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Following their marriage they headed straight back to the farm in Imogene. Doc began farming with his dad shortly after returning from the Navy and continued to work on tractors all the way into his late 70’s. From November 1958 to 1960, he worked as a manager at Bartlett and Co. Grain Elevator in Imogene. Thereafter, Doc worked as the maintenance supervisor at the Ever Ready/Union Carbide Battery plant from October of 1961 to retirement in March of 1988. This was in addition to his farming 160 acres.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Imogene. Doc’s passion of performing for others was reinforced through his work organizing plays for the Knights of Columbus and also illustrating his colorful character as one of the main actors. In his later years, the Knights of Columbus named him an honorary member. In his younger years, Doc’s love for music led to the organization of two bands, the Bob Regan Combo and the Catalina’s. Playing for the local towns, Doc was the drummer for both bands. In later years, he played the keyboard in a group called the Ding-A-Lings, in the local nursing homes. Doc ventured over to Malvern, Iowa on many Sunday afternoons to play a few rounds of golf with his brothers and brother-in-laws. October 1956 opened up a can of worms when Doc was issued his personal pilots license. He entertained most of southwest Iowa by performing fly-by belly rolls and other amusing stunts through the air. Most kids will remember the day that Santa Claus arrived by airplane instead of his formal sleigh, landing on main street of Imogene piloted by Doc. When he was young, he and his father, Tom, would go to Minnesota and fish, boat and play cards. With Doc’s love of farming, after retirement, he evolved into restoring antique tractors. At one point, he had 13-14 tractors in various different stages of repair.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Betha; brothers, Mike, Tom, Jerome and Edward; sisters, Lucille, Helen, Margie, Gert and Rita; and a granddaughter, Shannon Regan.

Roe, Dean - Coach Dean Roe crossed the finish line in first place in the hearts of his family, athletes, friends and students on Sunday May 23 at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Cancer is a tough opponent.
Coach's life can best be explained by a quote from an interview of Joe Henderson, retired West Coast Editor of Runner's World Magazine and Drake track star. When asked who he looked up to in his formative years, he said, "The first and foremost (influence) was my high school track coach, Dean Roe. Without him, I wouldn't be talking with you now.
None of what happened to me in this wonderful sport would have happened. He picked me back up, literally and otherwise, after I'd dropped out of my first mile race - and I thought I'd made an early exit from the sport that day. Mr. Roe (we always called him "Mr." never "Coach") said, "You owe me one. Finish the race next week, then we can talk about if you still want to quit." Finishing made me want to finish faster next time, and for hundreds of "next times" that followed.
Dean was born in Lenox to Jesse and Mary (Cipra) Roe on December 23, 1925. Jesse was on jury duty when 3-year-old Dean declared, "I'm the Judge!" Many of his friends know him as Judge Roe. He decided in junior high that he wanted to coach and teach. His love of sports was a big part of school, the Navy, college, and the rest of his life.
After graduation, from Lenox High, he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps and flew dive bombers as gunner, radio operator. He was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet and stationed at Great Lakes Naval Air Base. He watched his Chicago Cubs play Detroit in the 1945 World Series.
Dean married the love of his life Lucille (Lucy) Brokaw on February 27, 1944. The letters to each other during the war years are filled with love and caring. After his discharge from the Navy he attended Simpson College and played football, basketball and baseball. Dean taught and coached at Coin, South Page, Dexfield, and Stuart-Meno.
After retiring from teaching in 1987, he continued to coach girls' basketball and golf. He coached girls' basketball at Adair Casey for four years. His wife Lucy was his biggest fan, always in attendance at sports events, serving as statistician and chaperone for the girls' basketball team. How do you summarize fifty years of caring interactions with students, athletes, parents, friends and family?
He always said that the awards he received were earned by his kids, most of which he called "Slim". His awards include Iowa High School Hall of Fame for Football, Girls' Basketball and Track, National District 6 Coach of the year, National High School Coaches Hall of Fame, IGHSAU Plaque of Distinction, Who's Who Among American Teachers, the Simpson College Double S Award.
Coach served ten years on the awards jury for IGHSAU. Dean coached in three Girls' Basketball All-Star Games, took Coin, South Page and Adair-Casey to State Tournaments, one State Championship in football, four State Championships in Track and 1 State Individual champ in golf.
When Lucy died of complications of Alzheimer's disease, coach started a 6 on 6 girls' basketball classic to benefit Alzheimer's research at Mayo Clinic. Through his persistence, 6 on 6 basketball was added to the Iowa Games.
Dean's family include son Steve and his wife Lindi Roe, grandchildren Sarah (Kevin) Zdenek, Lantz (Adrienne), Cale (Heather) and great- grandchildren Fiona, Liam, and Roman Zdenek, Dean's daughter Janis and her husband Gary Schirm, grandchildren Jeff (Erin) Schirm and Jeremy Schirm. He is survived by sisters Bonnie Ridgley and Dorie (Reldon) Key and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers John and Gene, and sisters Grace and Marge.
The family met with friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 27 at Johnson Family Funeral Home at Stuart. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28, 2010, at the funeral home. Burial followed at 2:30 p.m. at Northview Cemetery in Lenox, his hometown.
Memorials to the family will be sent to Mayo Clinic for research for Alzheimer's Disease and Angelman's Syndrome. |
