Andrew, Robert Clinton - Robert C. Andrew, age 73, of Mesa, Arizona formerly of Des Moines, Iowa passed away Saturday, April 24, 2010 at his residence in Mesa. Robert Clinton Andrew was born July 30, 1936 on a farm near Villisca, Iowa the son of Evan Jerry and Letha Emily Andrew. He graduated from Villisca High School in 1956 and was united in marriage to Joan Durham on September 26, 1956 in Red Oak, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Deborah, Rodney, and Doreen. Robert lived many years in Des Moines, Iowa where he worked for Bob Brown Auto Center. After retiring from the car dealership, he owned and operated Andy’s Lounge in Bondurant, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Donna Augustine on March 21, 1996 in Bondurant, Iowa. They moved to Mesa, Arizona where Bob owned and operated an appliance store retiring in 2004. Robert enjoyed NASCAR Racing, Football, Basketball, and Baseball. He was a member of the Bondurant Christian Church and in his younger years served in the Iowa Army National Guard.

Preceding him in death were his parents and daughter: Deborah Jarman. Survivors include his wife: Donna Andrew of Mesa, Arizona; children: Rodney Andrew and wife Linda of Red Oak, Iowa and Doreen Andrew of Des Moines, Iowa; the children’s mother: Joan Andrew of Des Moines, Iowa; grandson: Aaron Andrew of Newton, Iowa; brother: Willard Andrew and wife Margaret of Clarinda, Iowa; sister: Dorothy McAlpin of Kansas City, Missouri; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Graveside funeral services will be held 11 AM Friday, April 30, 2010 at the Maple Grove Cemetery at Guss, Iowa with Rev. John Clark officiating. There will be open visitation at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa on Thursday afternoon. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Ascherl, Linda Yates - Graveside services for Linda Y. Ascherl, age 94, of Clarinda, Iowa, formerly of Florida, who entered into peace Friday, May 7, 2010 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa were held Tuesday, May 10, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend John Clark officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Linda Y Ascherl was born August 7, 1915, at Jasper, Florida, to Wilbur Cecil Yates and Edith Atha (Tuten) Yates. Linda grew up in Florida, graduating from High School and Secretarial School. She had a very successful and interesting career as a secretary/stenographer working for the Federal Government and the State of Florida. During World War II, she worked for the Engineering Department, Camp Blanding, Florida 1941-1942, the Federal Public Housing Administration, San Diego, California 1943-1944 and the Fiscal Division, Camp Blanding, Florida. Linda was employed by the Military Department, State of Florida from 1946-1971 as secretary to the Assistant Adjutant General for Air National Guard of Florida. She received a letter of recognition for her years of outstanding service to the Florida National Guard when she resigned September 1971 to move with her family to California. She moved to Clarinda in 1996 to be near her son and family.

Preceding Linda in death were her parents.

Survivors include her son, Albert Ascherl and wife Margaret of Clarinda, Iowa; daughter, Edythe Anne Bretzius and husband Roger of California; grandchildren, Alan Ascherl and wife Rebecca of Clarinda, Debra Anderson and husband Bill of Nassau, Bahamas Islands, Molora Irick, Kim Cogan, and Kyle Bretzius of California; great grandchildren, Aleigh and Austin Ascherl of Clarinda, Aarica Bezanson of Virgina, Garrett, Brooke and Christopher Irick of California, Justine and Alyse Cogan of California, Earl Bretzius of California and two great, great grandchildren, Cole and Tarah of California and many friends.

Blackman, Hallie Elizabeth Burke - Hallie Elizabeth Blackman was born August 25, 1921 in Rock Port, Missouri, the daughter of Hallie Cleveland and Mabel Lea (Greer) Burke. She passed away on Monday, May 17, 2010 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 22 days.

Hallie was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands John Kite and Clifford Eugene Blackman; and a son, Kent Taylor Kite. She is survived by a daughter, Jocelyn Leigh Hopkins and her husband Max of Omaha, Nebraska.

There will be a memorial service held later this summer with a private burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Shenandoah, Iowa.

Bryan, Alberta Campin - Alberta (Campin) Bryan was born on April 12, 1909 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of Jim and Stella (Septer) Campin. Alberta entered into eternal peace on April 18, 2010 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah at the distinctive age of 101 years old.

Alberta was raised in Farmer’s City. She attended school and graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1927. On December 13, 1929 she was united in marriage to William B. Hilger. They were later blessed with the birth of three children William, Joanne, and Duane. They lived on a farm between Riverton and Farragut, before moving to Shenandoah in 1942. The couple was blessed with 30 years of marriage before Bill’s passing on June 4, 1960. Alberta later found happiness with Jerry Bryan, the couple was married on June 15, 1963. The family resided in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri following their marriage and later moved to Omaha in the late 70’s. They enjoyed 32 years of marriage before his passing in 1995. Alberta continued to reside in Omaha until moving to Elm Heights Care Center in 2004.

Alberta was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She was an avid bowler and golfer. She also enjoyed playing bridge and caring for her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; siblings Jim and Mildred, stepsiblings Pauline and Grace, and daughter-in-law Roberta Hilger.

Elizabeth Regina Davis, age 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 15, 2010. Elizabeth was born in Omaha, Nebraska on October 2, 1915 to Andrew Ivan and Edith Elizabeth Thompsen. Elizabeth graduated from Tech High School in Omaha and then received training in preparation for her work as a secretary at Standard Blueprint Company.

Throughout her childhood and youth, Elizabeth was active in her Christian Faith and a member of the Third Presbyterian Church in Omaha, Nebraska. While worshipping there, she met a Seminary Student from the Presbyterian Seminary in Omaha named David Clarence Davis. Elizabeth and D. C. Davis fell in love and were married in 1941. They were blessed with two children, Paul and Ron.

From early in her life, Elizabeth had sensed that it might be God’s will for her to marry a pastor and throughout her life, she enjoyed quietly serving alongside her husband in the ministry.

For ten years, D.C. and Elizabeth lived in the Vail/Westside area of Iowa where D.C. served as pastor of the Presbyterian churches in these two towns. Both of their sons were born at the hospital in nearby Carroll, Iowa.

On October 1, 1948, D. C. Davis began his ministry at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Clarinda and served faithfully and lovingly for twenty five years until his death at the age of sixty four. Elizabeth served alongside her husband in many areas of ministry during those years. A special love for Elizabeth was teaching Sunday School and she led many children and young people to Christ during her years of ministry at Westminster. Elizabeth was active in Westminster Women’s Association, the Mariners family ministry, Presbytery, Synod and the overall ministry of the church. She was also a member of PEO.

Elizabeth was a wonderful, nurturing mother and found great joy in investing her life into her two sons. She was also very involved in the lives of her grandchildren and left her imprint on their lives.

Elizabeth will always be fondly remembered as a loving, compassionate, gracious Christian woman. Her favorite verse was Proverbs 15:1: “A soft answer turns away wrath” and she lived her life reflecting the gentle spirit of this verse. She was always a devout woman of prayer, and her prayer ministry expanded when she was no longer able to be out of her home and during the final two years of her life when she lived at Goldenrod Manor. She touched many lives at Goldenrod with her positive attitude and caring ways.

Preceding Elizabeth in death were her parents; her husband, David Clarence; her son, Paul Davis; her brothers, Paul Thompsen and Richard Thompsen and her step mother, Fae.

Farr, Allan Dale - Allan Dale Farr was born April 13, 1946 in Iowa City, Iowa. He passed away on Wednesday morning, May 19, 2010 at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah following a brief illness. Burial of ashes later at Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, Iowa.

Allan worked for Henry Fields until they closed and since 2000, he has worked for Earl May Nursery in Shenandoah. He enjoyed fishing and collecting eagles.

He is survived by two sons, Jeff Hillhouse of Red Oak, Iowa and John Burns of Omaha, Nebraska; a half brother, Scott Farr of Red Oak, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends.

Survivors include her brother, Michael Debra Irene Gardner was born October 1, 1952 in Hamburg, Iowa, the daughter of Richard Orville and Phyllis Irene (Taylor) Gardner. She passed away on Sunday afternoon, May 2, 2010 at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 57 years, 7months and 1 day.

Debra grew up in the Farragut area and graduated from Farragut High School in 1970. She later attended Graceland College in Lamoni, graduating in 1974. She worked as a teacher and guidance counselor for several school districts in Iowa and Missouri. Debra was an active member of the Community of Christ Church in Shenandoah, as well as the BPW. She enjoyed needlework and genealogy. She also enjoyed working with her clowning group.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Carol Ann.

Garner, Gloria Charmaine Ruby - Gloria Charmaine (Ruby) Garner was born on November 1, 1930 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd Elwin and Evelyn Josephine (Racine) Ruby. Gloria entered into eternal rest on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at the Manor of Malvern.

Gloria’s early days were spent in Shenandoah. She graduated from Shenandoah High School and later went on to attend Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. While in college she met C.H. Garner, the couple later married in Reno, Nevada on February 29, 1952. She continued her college education at Clarinda Community College.

Gloria worked at Alden's Department Store as a switchboard operator in Iowa City, as a lab tech at the State Psychiatric Hospital in Iowa City, at Collins Radio Station in Cedar Rapids, along with numerous other short term jobs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband C.H, Garner, and several aunts and uncles.

She leaves behind her daughter Karen Garner of Farragut; granddaughters Rebecca Castle of Shenandoah and Christine “Tina” Castle of Blair, NE; aunts Shirley Dorl of Shenandoah and Dorothy Racine of Longmont, CO; son-in-law Terry Castle of Shenandoah; other family and friends.

Graham, Donald Dale - Donald Dale Graham was born July 24, 1941 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Donald Eugene and Mildred Estelina (Bright) Graham. He passed away suddenly on Saturday evening, May 15, 2010 at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah at the age of 68 years, 9 months and 21 days.

Dale was born in Shenandoah and grew up in Omaha and California. He was a union carpenter for few years and then drove a truck until he retired in 1999. He enjoyed music, especially playing his guitar and singing. Dale was also loved being outside, especially camping, boating and fishing.

Gutschenritter, William "Delmus" - William Delmus Gutschenritter was born in Page County, IA on November 14, 1927 to William Louis and Vergie Belle (Pritchard) Gutschenritter. He eternally entered into rest on Monday, April 12, 2010 at his home in Shenandoah after a courageous battle with cancer.
He attended grade school at Sentinel Country School before graduating from Shenandoah High School in 1945. Following graduation, he began a career in farming, which lasted 49 years. His farming was interrupted by serving in the Korean War from 1950-52. He then returned home in 1952 and resumed farming. He was united in marriage to Patricia (Pat) Smelcer on April 16, 1955. They were united in marriage for 53 years. They were blessed with three children: Denise Lynn, Daniel William, and Debra Lee.
Delmus and Pat first started farming in the Imogene and Hamburg areas, before settling in the Coin area, where they farmed and resided 33 years. In 1997, Delmus and Pat moved to Shenandoah and he was employed by Valley News for five years after his retirement from farming.
Delmus was a life long farmer and enjoyed laboring the soil and watching his crops grow. He was passionate about farming and enjoyed the lifestyle it provided. Farming, as well as family, was very important to Delmus. Delmus faithfully attended his grandchildren's activities and sporting events.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, National Farmers Organization (NFO), and American Legion.
Preceding Delmus in death were his parents; wife, Patricia (7/31/08), and three brothers: one in infancy, Leo Gutschenritter and Carroll Gutschenritter.

Hamm, Dorothy Darlene Reynolds - Dorothy Darlene Hamm was born August 3, 1923 in Lenox, Iowa, the daughter of John Ellsworth and Nancy Marie (Paymal) Reynolds. She passed away on Sunday evening, May 30, 2010 at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 9 months and 27 days.

Dorothy grew up in Hopkins, Missouri. While in Hopkins, she worked in a café and learned to cook and make pies. She met her first husband, Donald Olmsted, and they were married February 24, 1942. Don and Dorothy moved to Shenandoah where Don worked for Joe and Hope O’Hara. Their daughter Julie was born at this time. The couple moved to a farm on Highway 2. While they lived there, they had two more daughters, Kathy and Darlene. They later moved to a farm south of Shenandoah and lived there until March of 1968, when they moved into town. Dorothy worked at the Hand Hospital as a cook, and later worked for the Shenandoah Schools in the lunchroom. Donald passed away in September of 1968.

On December 29, 1974, Dorothy married Cliff Hamm, who had three sons, Jack, Jerry and Rick. With her three daughters and his three sons, they became the local “Brady Bunch.” Dorothy worked with Cliff in the Hamm’s Appliance store and the couple traveled many places together, both for work and pleasure. She and Cliff spent several winters in Mesa, Arizona.

She enjoyed helping others and was available at a moments notice to help with about anything. She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. Dorothy also like doing needlework and sewing for her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; a brother, Donald Reynolds; infant grandson, Robert Neil Davison; son-in-law, Tim Byers; and a daughter-in-law, Jenene Hamm.

Herrman, Darrel Dean - Darrel Dean Herrman was born March 26, 1925 near Hamburg, Iowa in Locust Grove Township, the son of Leopold Leonard and Evalina Agnes (Thompson) Herrman. He passed away on Friday evening, June 11, 2010 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 85 years, 2 months and 16 days.

Darrel grew up in the Locust Grove Township area and graduated from Farragut High School in 1942. On February 15, 1948, he was united in marriage to Dixie Jean O’Neal at the Locust Grove Methodist Church. This union was blessed with three sons; Larry, Leslie and Dale.

Darrel farmed in Locust Grove Township his entire life. He was a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan, an avid reader and served as mayor of Westboro in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He was a very active member of the Locust Grove Methodist Church. The true love of his life was his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Leotta and Maryann.

Higgins, Archie Raymond - Funeral services for Archie Higgins, age 93, of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Monday, May 31, 2010 at Bryan LGH East Medical Center, Lincoln, Nebraska, were held Friday, June 4, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend Karen Bash officiating. Archie Raymond Higgins was born April 13, 1917 in Nodaway County, Missouri the son of James Marsh Higgins and Maude Mabel (Guthrie) Higgins. Archie, the fourth of James and Maude’s seven children, grew up in Northwest Missouri, for a short time in Colorado, and Southwest Iowa. On January 14, 1939, Archie was united in marriage in Clarinda, Iowa to Bertha Maxine Norris, daughter of George Edward Norris and Bertha Irene (Gorrell) Norris. Archie and Maxine were blessed with four children: Edwin, Rodney, Janice and Chris.
Over the years Archie did farming and worked in Clarinda, Iowa at Swift & Company, Miller’s Creamery and Thompson Wholesale. Archie was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Clarinda, Iowa and lived his Christianity quietly and steadfast. After retirement he and Maxine enjoyed camping in their trailer throughout the Mid West. Archie enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. He was always proud of his weedless garden and enjoyed sharing his vegetables with family and friends. Family and friends also enjoyed many pheasant dinners from his love of pheasant hunting. And Archie had a true love of fishing in that he could spend all day in a boat fishing, and still be happy even if the fish were not biting.
Left to cherish Archie’s memory are his wife of 71 years Maxine Higgins of Clarinda, Iowa; son Norris Edwin Higgins and wife Anna of Tulsa, Oklahoma; son Rodney Raymond Higgins of Minneapolis, Minnesota; daughter Janice Elaine (Higgins) Dalbey and husband Dennis of Clarinda, Iowa; and son David Chris Higgins and wife Diane of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Deborah Lynn Kestner, 55, of Savannah, Missouri, formerly of Clarinda, Ia. went to be with the Lord on June 13, 2010 after a long battle with cancer. Deborah was born in Clarinda, Iowa, October 12 1954 to Lillian Hillis (Cross) Simmons and Roland Simmons. Deborah attended school in Clarinda Iowa.

Deborah married Thomas Wheeler of Villisca Iowa, from this marriage they were blessed with five children. Later on in life she married Gary Kestner.

Deborah attended the Greater Hope Community Church formerly the Free Methodist Church in Clarinda. She enjoyed being involved in the church activities and the church family. She enjoyed embroidery and most of all she was dedicated to her children and grandchildren.

Deborah is survived by her husband, Gary Kestner of Savannah, Missouri; children, Kenneth Wheeler of Missouri, David Wheeler and wife Tammy of Bellevue Ne, Rodney Wheeler and wife Tara of Savannah Mo, Milissa Roberts and husband Scott of Newton Kansas, Mike Wheeler and wife Julie of Clarinda Iowa; six grandchildren, Sara Kier, Michaela Wheeler, Elijah Wheeler, Marley Wheeler, Natalie Wheeler and Katie Wheeler; brothers, Larry Simmons and wife Debbie of Rolla, Missouri, George Simmons and wife Tammy of Corning Iowa, Ed Simmons and wife Rose of Clarinda Iowa; sisters, Jeanne Lawrence and husband Stan of Iowa, Colleen Hines and husband Joe of Blanchard Iowa, Anna Ridnour and husband Larry of Gravity Iowa; many nieces, nephews and friends .

Deborah was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers and two sisters.

Kier, Debbie Jean - Debbie Jean Kier was born March 28, 1965 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence Samuel Kier, Jr. and Mary Lou (Booher) Ellison. She passed away on Monday evening, June 14, 2010 at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 45 years, 2 months and 17 days.

Debbie grew up southwest Iowa. She worked as a certified med aide, most recently at the Eiler House Assisted Living in Clarinda. She attended Harvest Fellowship Church at Shambaugh and enjoyed fishing and gardening. She collected roosters and unicorns. The true joy of her life was her family, especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father; her grandparents; a son, Casey Gaunt; and her aunt, Jessie Frohling.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Lou Ellison of Shenandoah, Iowa; her life partner, Alfred Sturgeon of Shambaugh, Iowa; her children, Marcy Kier and friend Chad Wilson of Clarinda, Iowa; Jennifer Gaunt and Matt Sloan of Red Oak, Iowa, Andrew and Jessie Gaunt of Red Oak, Iowa, David Gaunt and Summer Ribbey of Clarinda, Iowa, Bryan and Jaime Gaunt of Clarinda, Iowa, Gary Jr. and Catherine Gaunt of Clarinda, Iowa, Alisa Michaelson of Nyman, Iowa, Joe Vaill of Corning, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; along with many other relatives and friends.

Knittle, Gretchen Engelke - Gretchen Knittle was born January 10, 1911 in Sidney, Iowa, the daughter of George and Lulu (Heckel) Engelke. She passed away on Tuesday evening, May 25, 2010 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 99 years, 4 months and 15 days.

Gretchen grew up in Sidney and graduated from Sidney High School in 1928. She then attended Simpson College. On September 10, 1935, she was united in marriage to Darrell “Rosy” Knittle in Clarinda, Iowa after meeting him at the Sidney Rodeo dance. This union was blessed with two children, Steven and Judy.

She worked as a secretary for Mt. Arbor Nurseries, worked with many of her friends at Jack & Jill’s Clothing Store and worked with Rosy at Knittle Grocery. She was an 80 year member of PEO, a member of the hospital auxiliary, bridge club and book club. She was a volunteer at the nursing home and was an active member of the Shenandoah United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Steven Knittle; and a sister, Edna Goltermann.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy Heggen and her husband Elson of Red Oak, Iowa; four grandchildren, Robert Rea and his wife Kathy of Omaha, Nebraska, Sherry Wilson and her husband Scott of Omaha, Nebraska, Michael Knittle and his wife Pat of El Cajon, California, Stephanie Doss and her husband Channing of Irvine, Texas; five great grandchildren, Kelly, Shea, Ryan, Reese and Sayler; a cousin, Mary Jane Lorimor of Tulsa, Oklahoma; along with many other relatives and friends.

Lane, George, Jr - George Tweedy Lane, Jr. was born on February 10, 1936 in South Sioux City, SD, the son of George Tweedy and Mable Larilda (Kester) Lane, Sr. George entered into eternal rest on April 17, 2010 at the Shenandoah Medical Center following a brave battle with cancer.

George attended school through the 5th grade, and then went to work, in an effort to help support his family. He taught himself how to read by looking through comic books.

On May 20, 1956 he was united in marriage to Bonnell Marie Gray in Bethany, Missouri. This union was blessed with the birth of two daughters Lorraine and Marilyn. On May 23, 1975 he was united in marriage to Wava Darlene Hill in Maryville, Missouri.

During his working days George was employed by Mt. Arbor Nursery, did carpentry work for Bill Bateman, work for Chuck Gee Construction, Hallet Construction, and the City of Shenandoah in the Street Department. He also maintained a very successful wood cutting and small engineer repair business.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, spending time in the timber cutting wood, gardening, mowing, and dancing. Every now and again he would enjoy an occasional beer. He enjoyed spending time with his great-grandchildren and riding bikes with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Darlene, and several brothers. Those left to honor his memory include his daughters Lorraine “Lorrie” Murphy and significant other Ed Von Dielingen of Villisca, IA and Marilyn Bucy and husband Darrell of Osceola, IA; 5 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Long, Daniel P. "Dan" - Dan, 72, of Shenandoah and formerly of Essex passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Lynam, Lois Chubick - Lois (Chubick) Lynam was born June 6, 1925, in Carbon, Iowa, to Harvey and Lilly (Casebolt) Chubick. She passed away Monday, June 7, 2010, at the Hearthstone Care Center in York, Nebraska.
She married Kenneth Leo Lynam on June 14, 1942, in Maryville, Missouri. This union was blessed with five daughters: Marilyn, Patricia, Karen, Carolyn, and Marianna. Lois and Kenneth were lifelong farmers in the southwest Iowa area until retiring and moving to Nodaway. Her interests included gardening, serving as the church treasurer, going on “buggy rides” and enjoying time with her family.
Lois is survived by her children Marilyn (Matthew) Pacheco of Bakersfield, California, Patricia Wyrick of Springfield, Missouri, Carolyn (Wayne) Faust of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, and Marianna (Bill) Harris of Red Cloud, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; brother Otis (Judy) Chubick of Nodaway; sisters-in-law: Joyce (Dean) Gourley and Wilma (Herb) Bashaw all of Villisca.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Karen Hardy, sons-in-law Robert Wyrick and Fred Roberts, great granddaughter Hattie Wyrick, great-great granddaughter Mikala Nelson, sisters Della, Clara, Ethel, Pearl, Lola, and brother Harvey.

Funeral services for Lois (Chubick) Lynam will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 11th, at the Nodaway United Methodist Church with the interment at the Nodaway Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home on June 10th. Following the committal service there will be a luncheon at the Nodaway United Methodist Church.

Mauer, Donald - Donald Leslie Mauer, son of Leslie George and Florence Bridget (Lynch) Mauer, was born on June 2, 1919 near Minden, Iowa. Donald entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa. He had attained the age of 90 years, 10 months and 27 days.
Donald grew up on the family farm near Minden, Iowa. He attended country school outside of Minden. He had two siblings, Dareld Mauer and Donna Rae Madole.
On December 19, 1939 Don was united in marriage to Doris Ellen Dobernecker in College Springs, Iowa. To this union three children were born; Deloris, Donald and Dan.
Donald farmed and did custom work. He and Doris owned filling stations and a café, where Doris did all of the baking. Before retiring in 1979, Don and Doris ran the Coin Grocery Store for 16 years.
In his spare time and later in retirement, Donald enjoyed fishing, doing woodcrafts, gardening and reading the Bible. One of his favorite TV shows was Wheel of Fortune. He particularly enjoyed family fishing trips to Minnesota and Missouri.
Preceding Donald in death were his parents; brother, Dareld; and sister, Donna. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of over 70 years, Doris of Shenandoah. His three children, Deloris and her husband Ron of Evanston, Wyoming and their two children Mark and Elizabeth; Donald E. Mauer and his wife Karen of Oregon, Missouri and their three children Craig, Steve and Paula; and Dan Mauer and his wife Gloria of rural Essex and their two children, Laura and Brad. Don was also blessed with 13 great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Mier, Lorraine Wilhelmina Miller - Lorraine Wilhelmina Mier was born December 26, 1920 near Yorktown, Iowa, the only child to Frank Fredrich Henry and Okey Agnes (Haas) Miller. She passed away late Wednesday evening, June 16, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 21 days.

Lorraine grew up in rural Page County, Iowa and graduated from Clarinda High School. Following high school, she received her normal training and taught school for 3 years. On December 30, 1941, she was united in marriage to Paul Mier in Tarkio, Missouri. This union was blessed with two daughters, Charlette and Kay.

After her marriage, Lorraine was an active farmwife, assist Paul in the daily tasks of farming. She was a member of the Farm Bureau Women, where she served as president for a time. She was also a 4-H leaders. She was a very active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Clarinda where she taught Sunday school, served as Sunday school superintendent, and played the piano and organ. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery work and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Paul; a son-in-law, Michael Costello; brother-in-law, Martin Mier; and sisters-in-law, Doris Mier and Joanne Mier.

Newkirk, Helen Ruth Damewood - Funeral services for Helen Ruth Newkirk, age 86 of Shenandoah, formerly of Bedford, who died Friday, April 23, 2010 at Woodlands Rehabilitation Center in Council Bluffs, will be held Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Interment will be held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Helen Ruth (Damewood) Newkirk was born November 12, 1923 in Siam, Iowa the daughter of Stanley Damewood and Donna Lillian (Jobe) Damewood. She grew up in the Siam area attending school, graduating from the Bedford High School with the Class of 1941. On October 9, 1942 she was united in marriage to Roy Dwight Newkirk in Maryville, Missouri. After their marriage, Dwight left to join the United States Navy, serving in World War II. During this time Helen Ruth followed Dwight to Chicago, California and New Orleans, until he was deployed on a ship in the South Pacific. Upon his discharge in December of 1945, the couple farmed on the family farm for eleven years where they worked side-by-side. In 1958, Dwight went to work for the United States Postal Service in Council Bluffs, transferring to Shenandoah in 1966, and working there until his retirement in 1984. After his retirement, Dwight and Helen Ruth enjoyed spending several winters in Arizona. Both Dwight and Helen Ruth were baptized in the Christian Church in Shenandoah on October 25, 1969. The couple was blessed with the birth of two sons, Larry Allen and Norman Lowell, who died at infancy.

Helen Ruth was a very kind and considerate person who always made you feel welcome in her home. She was a tremendous cook and baker with her specialty being noodles and pie. She enjoyed, and was very talented at refinishing furniture. This was something she kept very busy at after Dwight’s retirement. She loved her family and truly enjoyed the time spent together. After Dwight’s death in 2006, Helen Ruth enjoyed her friends and time spent at the Shenandoah Senior Center . . . where she was known to shoot a game of pool or two. She also loved the close-knit neighborhood she had in Shenandoah.

Left to cherish the memories of a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend are her son Larry Newkirk and wife Linda of Council Bluffs; her sister Doris Nicholson and husband Walter of Bedford; two granddaughters Jessica and Mikala; six great-grandchildren Ethan, Kassidee, Hailee, Braelynn, Madyson and Mackenzi; along with other family members and friends.

Pulliam, Lois LaVon Davison - Graveside memorial services for Lois Pulliam, age 79, of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa were held Monday, April 19, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa with Pastor Greg Young officiating.


Lois LaVon Davison Pulliam was born May 12, 1930, rural New Market, Iowa to Clifford Davison and Flossie (Beauchamp) Davison. Lois grew up on the family farm south of New Market, Iowa and graduated from New Market High School.

Lois was united in marriage to Max Junior Pulliam on June 26, 1948 at Clarinda, Iowa. To this union five children were born, Wesley, Leslie, Steve, Angela and Rodney. Lois loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much and enjoyed having them around and cooking for them. Lois was a great cook. She also liked to watch them in whatever sport they were taking part in. Lois also loved to grow African violets and had many beautiful violets in her home. She enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends and she continued to play cards after she went to live at the Westridge Quality Care and Rehab Center in July 2007. Lois and Max enjoyed going to Country Music Shows in the area and northern Missouri.

Lois worked at Berry’s Hatchery, Bethesda Care Center and for many years at the Dairy Queen in Clarinda. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Clarinda, Iowa.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Clifford and Flossie Davison; husband, Max Pulliam; sister, Helen Sparks and husband Darwin Sparks; sister, Gladys Thurman; daughter-in-law, Karen Pulliam; grandchildren Devon Sebeneicher, Jared Pulliam, and great grandchild, Brody Pulliam.

Regan, Robert Francis "Doc" - Robert Francis “Doc” Regan, son of Thomas Edward and Bertha W. (Saner) Regan, was born on August 25, 1928 on the family farmstead northeast of Imogene, Iowa. He entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 7, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa following a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 81.
Being the youngest of 12 children, he made sure not to go unnoticed. While growing up in Imogene, he and his brothers spent much of their time playing baseball, hanging out with friends and being a part of the St. Patrick’s Church community.
Doc attended St. Patrick’s Academy (1935 to 1945). And one year somewhere in the middle of those dates, Doc attended country school. He was once quoted as saying “I got smarter than the nuns in ‘45 so I quit school”. Shortly thereafter, he entered the Navy at the young age of 17.
Doc began serving his country while attending boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago. He entered into active service with the United States Navy on January 24, 1946. During his time in the service, he served on the U.S.S. Topeka, U.S.S. Iowa and U.S.S. Helena. Doc’s highest rank achieved was Seaman First Class. He received the World War II Victory Medal and Phillipine Independence Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 28, 1947.
On March 31, 1948, Doc was united in marriage to the love of his life, Monica Joyce Martin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Following their marriage they headed straight back to the farm in Imogene. Doc began farming with his dad shortly after returning from the Navy and continued to work on tractors all the way into his late 70’s. From November 1958 to 1960, he worked as a manager at Bartlett and Co. Grain Elevator in Imogene. Thereafter, Doc worked as the maintenance supervisor at the Ever Ready/Union Carbide Battery plant from October of 1961 to retirement in March of 1988. This was in addition to his farming 160 acres.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Imogene. Doc’s passion of performing for others was reinforced through his work organizing plays for the Knights of Columbus and also illustrating his colorful character as one of the main actors. In his later years, the Knights of Columbus named him an honorary member. In his younger years, Doc’s love for music led to the organization of two bands, the Bob Regan Combo and the Catalina’s. Playing for the local towns, Doc was the drummer for both bands. In later years, he played the keyboard in a group called the Ding-A-Lings, in the local nursing homes. Doc ventured over to Malvern, Iowa on many Sunday afternoons to play a few rounds of golf with his brothers and brother-in-laws. October 1956 opened up a can of worms when Doc was issued his personal pilots license. He entertained most of southwest Iowa by performing fly-by belly rolls and other amusing stunts through the air. Most kids will remember the day that Santa Claus arrived by airplane instead of his formal sleigh, landing on main street of Imogene piloted by Doc. When he was young, he and his father, Tom, would go to Minnesota and fish, boat and play cards. With Doc’s love of farming, after retirement, he evolved into restoring antique tractors. At one point, he had 13-14 tractors in various different stages of repair.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Betha; brothers, Mike, Tom, Jerome and Edward; sisters, Lucille, Helen, Margie, Gert and Rita; and a granddaughter, Shannon Regan.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Monica Regan; his four children, Jerry Regan and his wife Patricia of North Carolina, Megan McIntyre and her husband Rod of Boulder, Colorado, Terry Regan and his wife Kathy of Shenandoah, Iowa and Mary Jo Osborne and her husband Jerry of Littleton, Colorado; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; two siblings, Ken Regan of Norfolk, Nebraska and Jean Martin of Carroll, Iowa; various nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and many friends.

Runyan, Patti Scott - Patti (Scott) Runyan was born March 14, 1952, in Clarinda, Iowa. She is one of seven children. Patti is the daughter of Bette and the late Robert Scott. Patti graduated from Adel High School in Adel, Iowa.
On February 10, 1973, Patti married the love of her life, Curt Runyan in New Market, Iowa. They built their family and home in Clarinda.
Patti worked as a beautician and owned a shop in New Market for a while and then worked in a shop in Clarinda. She touched many lives working in Clarinda Schools as a librarian and recess teacher. Patti then went on to make great friends in the many years she worked for Lisle Corporation before retiring in 2008.
Patti enjoyed cooking for others, especially her family. She knew the secret to cooking (with a little help from Curt). She was always organizing and cleaning for which her family and friends loved giving her a hard time about. Patti was a dedicated fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and showed her Hawkeye spirit often with continuous banter with those who weren’t.
She was the best mother and a best friend to Mandy and Lindsay. She was the rock of the family being a counselor and a shoulder to cry on. She always had a way to make everyone feel better.
What Patti treasured the most was her title as “Barna”. She has three beautiful grandchildren that she adored and loved with all she had. She will live on forever through them.
Patti is preceded in death by her father Robert Harold Scott and a brother Russell Scott.

Merle Eugene “Gene” Russell, 88, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2010.

Gene was born in Hastings, Iowa on December 4, 1921, to Warren Russell and Jessie (Majors) Russell. He lived in Elliott, Iowa, until he moved to Shambaugh, Iowa, in 1923. He attended Clarinda schools and graduated with the Class of 1940. Gene served his country as a member of the United States Navy—active 1942-1946; National guard, 1946-1949, at the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. As a veteran of World War II, he received the following ribbons and medals: American Area Campaign; European-African-Middle East Area Campaign; Asiatic-Pacific Area (bronze star); Philippine Liberation and World War II Victory.

Throughout his working career, Gene could be seen serving the public with a smile. He and his father, Warren Russell, owned a trucking company serving the Shambaugh area. Until his retirement, Gene operated Deep Rock Service Station on State Street in Clarinda, Iowa.

In 1972, Gene was united in marriage to Beverly Jean (Lee) Clark. Brought to the union were Beverly’s five children.

Gene retired in 1984, and upon Beverly’s 1987 retirement, the couple began traveling. As a snowbird, he enjoyed wintering in Arizona, Texas, and most recently, Florida. He was proud of his involvement with the Avion Travel Club—even serving as chapter president for a time. Having never met a stranger, Gene was often found enjoying the company of his many family members and his extended family, the Shambaugh Church of God.

Preceding Gene in death were his parents, Warren and Jessie Russell; son, Richard E. Clark; grandson, William P. Clark.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Russell of Shambaugh; children, Rhonda Vogel and husband Bob of Creston, Iowa; Randy Clark and wife Bina of Omaha, Nebraska, Rebecca Fugle of Clarinda, Iowa, Roxann Vannaman and husband Jeff of St. Joseph, Missouri; many grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and many friends.

Gene’s contagious smile, infectious laugh and zest for life will be missed.

Salecki, Ruth Pearl Casey - Ruth Pearl Casey was born September 14, 1921 to Rosie Squires Casey and Bruce James Casey in Clarinda, Iowa.
She was married to Jim Saint and together they ran a grocery store for many years in Coos Bay, Oregon. After she was widowed, Ruth married Joe Salecki, a happy Polack from Chicago, Illinois. Joe and Ruth traveled together on long vacations to Las Vegas, Mexico and on hunting trips. But due to his ailing health, they moved back to Clarinda. After Joe passed away, Ruth and sister Luella shared a home in Clarinda.
Ruth had been in poor health for several months suffering a fatal heart attack on May 22, 2010. Ruth passed away at the Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa.
Ruth never had children of her own but was a second mother to her nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed and loved forever. We know she is now with mama (where she always wanted to be). This is not good bye, Ruthie, just so long for a while.
Surviving Ruth is her sisters Luella Siefering and Juanita Seeley, both of Clarinda; brother Paul and all his children in Colorado; nephews Bob and Joe and wife Colleen; nieces Pat, Leta and Rosie and husband Carl; great nieces Casey, Alissa, Deanna and family and Jamey Rose; great nephews Bruce and family, Joey, Scott, Rick, Kenneth and Jim and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Mary Nelson; great nephew Eric Harbin; two husbands; many cousins and relatives which she loved.

Shane Ray Scroggs was born May 2, 1994 in Omaha, Nebraska to Leonard (Lynn) Scroggs and Nancy (Foster) Scroggs. He was baptized and confirmed in the New Market Methodist Church. Shane grew up in the New Market/Clarinda area; he attended the Clarinda Community Schools and completed his Freshman year at Clarinda High School.

Shane was an active young man with many interests and many friends. He was employed at Fareway Grocery Store. Shane had a talent for drawing and really enjoyed it. He enjoyed playing Middle School and Freshman football. He loved to hunt and ride four wheelers. Shane loved to bowl and was an excellent bowler. He spent many hours restoring a 1969 Ford pickup. Shane was a big fan of Nascar and NHRA Drag racing, especially following the John Force team.

Preceding Shane in death were his great grandparents, Renny and Bessie Goforth, Forrest “Jack” and Dicie Scroggs, Clarice Foster and Harold Eitzen; grandparents, Leonard Scroggs and Sharon Scroggs Miers; aunt, Sherry Ann Scroggs.

Sheirbon, Marjorie Charlene Stephens - Marjorie Charlene Sheirbon was born November 11, 1928 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of Harry Denver and Cloie Claudia(Cain) Stephens. She passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning May 11, 2010 in her home with her beloved husband at her side. She was 81 years old.

Marjorie grew up in Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1946. She met Glen Walter Sheirbon and they fell in love at first site. They were married on October 1, 1947 in Shenandoah and shared 62 wonderful years together. They had two daughters, Moya and Yona.

Marjorie was a homemaker most of her life. She worked as a telephone operator for 13 years and part time at Mt. Arbor Nurseries in the offices. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Shenandoah. She was a woman of great faith and shared that faith with many that she touched. She served as treasurer of the Shenandoah Food Pantry for many years. She enjoyed knitting sweaters for her family and Christmas stockings for family and friends. A favorite project was knitting sweaters for children in third world countries. Marjorie made many friends in the 50 years that she bowled in Shenandoah.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Claude and Paul; and a sister Eunice.

The people that will miss her most include her husband Glen Sheirbon of Shenandoah; her daughters, Moya Peterson and her husband Larry of Overland Park, Kansas, Yona Schroeder and her husband Rick of Shawnee, Kansas ; five grandchildren, Brandon Peterson and his wife Janell of Shawnee, Kansas, Amanda Peterson of Lawrence, Kansas, Harrison, Cameron and Trenton Schroeder all of Shawnee, Kansas; a sister, Martha McKay of Olathe, Kansas and many friends and family that she touched in her lifetime.

She fell asleep here but awoke in heaven. We will miss her smile, her laugh and her words of encouragement but we know that she is waiting for us in her heavenly home.

Kenneth Albert (Cotton) Smith was born on July 16, 1932, in College Springs, Iowa, and lived there all of his life except for two years spent at Iowa State College and two years in the United States Army. He left us on June 8, 2010, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.

He was born to Vivian and Alice Arendsee Smith and attended Amity Schools from which he was graduated in 1950. He was born and grew up near Crystal Lake and could relate many memories of delivering milk to the campers there and also of cutting ice on the lake to store in the icehouse and later deliver to customers.

His life was spent in the masonry trade. He and his brother Paul were partners and friends for 45 years as Smith Brothers Masonry. Together they built many beautiful brick homes, schools, and fireplaces, which can still be seen across the Midwestern countryside.

On December 10, 1953, he was married to Marjorie McKeown in Clarinda, Iowa, and to this union was born six children, seventeen grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. One of his greatest pleasures was attending the ballgames and other activities of all of these offspring.

Another of his favorite pastimes was the enjoyment of traveling. He and Marge traveled the United States from sea to shining sea and could make the claim of visiting 49 of the 50 states plus a couple of European trips, as well.

As much as he enjoyed travel, Kenny always enjoyed getting back to his own backyard even more. He loved to spend time in the garden and caring for his wild birds, which he spent many hours feeding and watching and researching.

Kenny is survived by his wife Marjorie, brother Paul Smith, sister-in-law Gertrude Smith, sister JoAnn VanFosson, and children Rob and Kathy Smith, Peggy Olenius, Bryan and Kelly Smith, Danny and Lori Smith, Paula Olson, and Karen and Steve Guthrie. He is also survived by his grandchildren Megan and Brad Clime, Sam, Lucy, and Aubrey Smith, Dan, Lauren, Molly, Kelly, and Mallory Olenius, Bradley and Joel Smith, Amanda Smith, Michael, Jessica, Scott, and Paige Olson, Chase, Anne, and Peyton Guthrie, and his great-grandchildren Alexis, Hadley, and Skylar Olson.

Stephens, Carl "Bill" Jr - Carl William "Bill" Stephens was born on January 4, 1945 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Carl William "Short" and Marvis Eileen (Johnson) Stephens. Bill entered into peace on June 11, 2010 at the University of Nebraska Hospital in Omaha.

Bill's early years were spent on the family farm between Shenandoah and Essex. As a child, Bill helped around the farm and rode his horse to Mt. Vernon Country School. He later attended Shenandoah Community Schools where he graduated with the Class of 1963. He continued his education at Iowa State University and later at Iowa Western Community College.

On October 16, 1964 he was united in marriage to Lynda Nicholls in Shenandoah, Iowa. The couple was later blessed with the birth of two sons; Ludlo and Lindsey.

He was drafted into the United States Army at Fort Lewis, Washington on May 28, 1968. Bill served his country with pride for 13 months in Vietnam, where he served as a Ranger in the LRRP before receiving an Honorable Discharge on December 30, 1969.

Bill was a true cowboy. He enjoyed the sport of Rodeo and took part in roping calves and bulldogging for over 30 years. He also farmed for the majority of his adult life and served as a veterinary assistant for Doc Bonnes. Many also knew Bill as the “Milk Man” for Anderson Erickson Dairy, a job which he held for 13 1/2 years.

He was a member of the Nishna Valley Saddle Club, Shenandoah Auxiliary Police, United Rodeo Association, American Legion and the United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. Bill was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and numerous outdoor activities. He was rarely without a dog throughout most of his life. In his later years, he enjoyed cooking and baking for a multitude of family and friends throughout Southwest Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Phyllis Hein and Rozann Stephens. Those left to honor his memory include his wife Lynda of Shenandoah; children Ludlo Stephens and significant other Stacey Cox of Ankeny, IA and Lindsey Stephens and wife Jenny of Shenandoah; two grandchildren Payton and Kassidy Stephens of Shenandoah; sister Shirley Stephens of New York City, NY; other family, close friends and his "good ole dog" Buck.

Stevens, Francis Mitchell - Francis Mitchell Stevens, Sr. was born March 25, 1944 in Eureka, Kansas, the son of Benjamin and Estelle (Williams) Stevens. He passed away on Monday evening, June 7, 2010 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 66 years, 2 months and 12 days.

Francis grew up all over the country. He lived in Shenandoah for several years where he worked for the Farm Master Gate Factory and he drove a truck. He later moved to the Lenox area where he worked for Papetti’s. After he retired, he moved to the Boone area where he lived until his health began to fail. At that time he moved to Fremont, Nebraska to be close to family. Francis enjoyed leatherwork, beadwork and building model cars. The true love of his life was NASCAR racing and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step father, Boyd Jack Spencer; and an infant sister, Marion Louise Stevens.

Donald Lee Stewart was born on March 17, 1926 in Elmo, Missouri to Cecil Everett Stewart and Mabel Charlotte Cain (Heumphreus) Stewart. Don served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a sergeant in the 102nd Combat Engineers Division, serving two years in Italy, Korea and Japan. After the war, he reenlisted and served in Alaska until January, 1947. Following his time in the service, he worked at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute until 1959. He moved to San Diego, California and worked for ARA Food Vending Company until his retirement.

Don loved the San Diego Chargers and was a season ticket holder for thirty years. He was on a bowling league in California and loved to play golf. Don returned to Iowa in the 1980’s. In 1987, Don met Debra Johnson and they were united in marriage on September 8, 1992 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Preceding Don in death were his parents; brothers, Junior, Bob and Raymond Heumphreus.

Tyner, Alvin Thomas - Alvin Thomas Tyner was born on December 20, 1921 to Alvin Wilson and Iva Charlotte (Trewet) Tyner in rural Farmer’s City area near Randolph, Iowa and passed away on May 26, 2010 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Growing up in Fremont County, Iowa, Alvin attended country school and graduated from Randolph High School. Alvin joined the Army in 1942 and was a member of the of the 95th Infantry Division. On November 18, 1944, Alvin, then a Technical Sergeant, took command of his platoon after the platoon leader and the platoon sergeant became casualties of fierce enemy fire while crossing the Moselle River. After reorganizing the squads, he led them vigorously in the destruction of all German resistance in the immediate area. He then collected men from other organizations in the sector and against determined opposition, forcibly established a bridgehead which opened the way on Metz for the main battalion body. For his heroism in battle, he was awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars and commissioned a second lieutenant. Alvin went on to spend 23 years in the reserves becoming a Captain.

Alvin married Mildred Danner on May 31, 1947, in Shenandoah, Iowa. They made their home in Shenandoah. To this union two children were born, Thomas Alvin Tyner and Vicky Sue Tyner Briggs.

Alvin worked for Genuine Auto Parts for many years and taught school at Iowa Western Community College for 12 years before his retirement. He was a member of American Legion Post #88 serving as Commander, the Shenandoah Elks Lodge and served on the Armory Board; he was also a member of the National Order of Battlefield Commissions. He was an avid golfer an card player.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Tom; and five brothers, Gerald, his twin Melvin, Eugene, Maurice and Donald. Alvin is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred; daughter Vicky Sue and son-in-law Michael Briggs; sisters-in-laws, Marilyn Tyner of Seal Beach California and Betty Tyner of Creston, Iowa; a cousin Mary Jo Davis of Hemingford, Nebraska; nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by Rev. Clark Finehout and Rev. Fred Bryson. Attending the memory register were Betty Leacox and Elizabeth Mullins. Caring for the flowers were Mary Ann Goodrich, Marci Volker and Suzanne Tysor. Organist was Marcella Heaton. Vocalists were Suzanne Tysor and Morgan Pedersen, who sang "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Casket bearers were Mike Briggs, Robert Longman, D. B. Mullins, Harvey Vermillion, Jim Androy and Tony Hansen. Honorary casket bearers were all of Alvin's friends. Full military rites were accorded by the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Memorials in Alvin's name are being directed to the Alzheimer's Association. Whitney, Phyllis Jean Draper - Funeral services for Phyllis Whitney, age 81, of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Friday, April 23, 2010 at Westridge Care and Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa were held Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend Robert Keefer officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa.

Phyllis Jean Whitney was born November 20, 1928 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of Grear Doyle Draper and Lulu Imogene (Lowe) Draper. Phyllis graduated from Villisca High School in 1946 and with an Associates Degree from Clarinda Junior College in Clarinda, Iowa. During her college years, she was Editor of the Blue Jay Flyer, school newspaper. She also worked two jobs while working her way through college. She was united in marriage on May 27, 1951 to Grant Whitney at the Villisca Methodist Church. They were blessed with six children, Steven, Michael, Kathleen, Craig, Kenneth and Richard.

Phyllis considered her role of mother to be her most important job. In addition to caring for her husband and children, her employment included the Honeyman’s Drug Store in Villisca, Hawley’s Drug Store in Clarinda, Clarinda Herald Journal, the Page County Clerk’s office, Casey’s and Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.

Phyllis spent many hours volunteering for various organizations in the community, the Glenn Miller Society, the Red Cross, the Heart Association, the Nodaway Valley Museum and the Clarinda Library. In 2008, she was awarded a Lifetime Membership in the Glenn Miller Society for her many hours of volunteering and giving tours at the Glenn Miller Birthplace.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Grant Whitney; son, Steven Whitney (4/21/1973); sister, Sharon Wagaman and husband Davis; sister-in-law, Lois Alice Laverty and husband Kenneth.

Williams, Evelyn Maxine Wagaman - Evelyn Maxine Wagaman Williams, daughter of Orville L. and Susan Jane Smith Wagaman was born Dec 7, 1923 on a farm northwest of Villisca, Iowa in the Hacklebarney area.
Wally Williams and Evelyn Wagaman were married Feb 28, 1943 at the home of her parents near Villisca. The couple has one daughter, Lois L. Williams Sanson.
Evelyn was very active with Blue Birds, 4-H as a leader for 5 years, summer camp counselor, Bible School director and superintendent of Sunday School. She was president of the Presbyterian Womens Group and received an honorary membership and pins from the Presbyterian church.
In 1986 she was instrumental in forming a support group for Alzheimers Disease. She was chosen Montgomery County Homemaker of the Year in 2002. Evelyn enjoyed family history and was on the Montgomery County History Center Board for 5 years, in charge of the Pittsburg School and helped with identifying country schools for the Page County Nodaway Valley museum. She enjoyed attending Rose Hill Church, rural Clarinda. While there she was instrumental in making sure the veterans’ graves were marked on Memorial Day.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Lois and husband Gary Sanson of Council Bluffs, IA, grandchildren Scott Sanson of Albuquerque, NM, and Jodi and husband Brett Immel and their son Beckett of Chicago, IL; sister, Nadine and husband Lawrence Blume of College Springs, IA; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents Susan and Orville Wagaman, husband, Wallace; and sister, Louise and her husband Norman Nygaard.

Jean Williams was born on July 10, 1924 at Northboro, Iowa, to Homer Mathias Yance and Alice Ruth (Travis) Yance. Jean passed away on May 29, 2010 at the Clarinda Regional Health center after fighting a courageous battle against cancer. Jean was 85 years old. Jean was a graduate of Braddyville High School.

Jean was a loving mother, grandmother and a proud identical twin to her sister June. Jean had many passions in life. One was her local P.E.O. chapter, where Jean was a 50-year charter member of the group.

Jean's love of sports played a large role in her life. Whether if she was watching athletics on television, participating in the local paper's "pigskin pick'em" competition or golfing around southwest Iowa with the "Golden Girls," sports meant the world to Jean. She also was an avid bowler one time in her life. Jean also loved playing bridge with friends.

Professionally, in addition to being a full-time mom, Jean worked for the state of Iowa at Clarinda's Mental Health Institute as a building service supervisor. Most of all, family was what made Jean the happiest in life.

Jean is preceded in death by husband Robert in 1999; parents; siblings; Joe Yance, Jim and wife Pearl Yance; Helen and husband George Yaple; Winifred Bryant and brother-in-law Bob Smith.

Jean is survived by her children: Robert Thomas and wife Karla Williams of Clarinda, Iowa; Barbara Ann and husband Duane Herzberg of Clarinda; Richard Theodore and wife Debra Williams of Clarinda; Michael David and wife Renee Williams of Clarinda; Steven Earl and wife Renae Williams of Bethel Park, Pa.

Grandchildren: Billy Williams, Jerard Williams, Kristin Williams, Jennifer Wagoner, Chris Williams, Terah Williams, Tyler Williams, Trey Williams; Great-grandchildren: Spencer, Payton, William, Sara, Addison, Miley, Nolan; Sibling June Smith of Placentia, Calif; brother-in-law Bill Bryant of Calif; nieces, nephews, along with many other family and friends.

Funeral services were held June 1, 2010 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel with Rev Andy Rubenking officiating. Interment was at Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa.
