Mace, Margaret Miller Mace passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2005 at the Tabitha Care Center in Lincoln, NE at the age of 85 years. Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 27, 2005 at the Eastridge Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, NE. She was married to Dale Mace who had the Jimmie Dale orchestra from 1935-1942. She is survived by one daughter, LuAnn Detwiller of Henderson, NV and Dorothy Whitehill of Clarinda, IA.

 

Maher, Philip Allen -

Phillip Allen Maher, born September 5, 1943, to Louis and Wanda
Mabee in Apache, Az., departed this life on January 25, 2008 at his
home in Tucson, Az.
He served his country in the U.S. Army and Navy. On September
25 he married Barbara Lynn Pettengill, daughter of John Pettengill and
Fern England Pettengill. On September 5, 1986 they celebrated their
25th wedding anniversary.
He was active as President of the Optimist Club in Tucson. He had
battled cancer for the past 20 years.
He leaves his love wife, Barbara, mother-in-law, Fern England
Pettengill of Vacanille, Ca., brother-in-law, John Jr. and Michael L.
Pettengill, all of Vacanille; sisters-in-law, Debbie, Vacanille, Ca.,
Ginger Howse of Kippins Newfoundland, Canada.; brothers-in-law,
John Serb of Vacanille, Ca. and Mike Howse of Kippins
Newfoundland, Canada; niece, Madison Tate Pettengill of Vacanille,
Ca.; godchildren Auna Hann, Jason Howe, Emilie Anne Howse,
Michael John Howse, and great nephews Matthew and Ryan Hann, also
Kimi and Mike Gerinano and Stephen Puente and Rita Puente and
Isabelle, Julius and Sophi.
Phil will be missed by his family and a host of friends.

 

Mannasmith, William Andrew Mannasmith, Jr., was born on May 10, 1923 on a farm near Coin, Iowa to William Andrew, Sr. and Bertha (Hagemier) Mannasmith. He passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2005 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Bill attended country school near Norwich and graduated from Coin Consolidated High School in 1941. He enlisted in the U. S. Army and served from 1942-1946. On his return from the service, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Jean Dowell at the Presbyterian Church in Coin, Iowa on March 3, 1946 where they made their home in the Coin area for 59 years. Mr. Mannasmith was Postmaster for 31 years in the Coin Post Office before retirement.
His great love was for music, which he and Dorothy passed on to their family and shared with their community. He participated in the National music contest held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1941 and won a superior "I" rating at the national contest, singing "The Lost Chord." He was active in the community of Coin by serving as emcee for Minstrel Shows, Community Rodeos, and served with Dorothy as promoters for the Coin Centennial Celebration. He was a faithful, lifetime member of the Coin Presbyterian Church, serving as elder, trustee, treasurer and custodian until its closure. He was currently a member of the Congregational Church of Farragut, Iowa. His community service to the town of Coin was immeasurable.
Preceding Bill in death were his parents; brother, Dr. Clarence Mannasmith; four step-brothers, Lee, Lesley, Guy and Lester Mannasmith; special uncle, Milton Dowell; and mother and father-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Dowell. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Shenandoah; two daughters, Dianne Braymen and her husband John of Urbandale, IA, and Colene Doucette and partner Georgia Bichekas of Omaha, NE, son, Larry Mannasmith and his wife Rhonda of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren, Vanessa and Tye Parsons, Hilary Mannasmith, Erica and Neil Seeley, Noah and Lindsey Braymen, Tyler Doucette, Robin and Chris Drennen; great grandchildren, Bailey and Eli Drennen and Jadyn Doucette; two sisters-in-law, Dorothea Mannasmith and Marilynn Graham and her husband Richard; brother-in-law, George Dowell and wife Nellie; special aunt, Mrs. Thelma Dowell of Shenandoah, IA; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, January 27, 2005 at 10:00 am. at the Coin United Methodist Church in Coin, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Carl Phillips, Pastor Claude Westerfield and Pastor Bea Kinzler. Attending the memory register were Irma Sallee and Marlene Gant. Caring for flowers were Joyce Adams, Joan Fox and Iva Jean Cutler. Ushers were Neil Cutler, Robert Strong and Bill Dreyer. Pianist was Larry Mannasmith. Vocalists were Marjorie Smiley and Tom Woodin. Special music was "My God and I", "The Lords Prayer" and "The Last Chord". Honorary casket bearers were Mr. and Mrs. Russell Henning, Mr. and Mrs. Quentin Gibson, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Shelton, Mr. and Mrs. Leland Loghry, Mr. and Mrs. Shelton Jones and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Olenius. Casket bearers were Tye Parsons. Noah Braymen, Chris Drennen, John Braymen, Neil Seeley and Lewis Dunkenson. Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery in Coin, Iowa. Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

 

Marsh, Deborah (Debbie) Ann Luncsford, 49, of Elmo, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2005 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Ks.
Debbie was born May 27, 1955 in Peoria, Illinois to Beverly Ann (Field) and LeRoy Luncsford. She was the second child of eight. After her mother remarried, she moved with her family near College Springs, IA. Here Debbie met Laverne Marsh, of Elmo. They were married on January 22, 1972 in LaVista, HE. The couple settled in Elmo to raise their family and be near Laverne's parents, whom she loved like her own.
Debbie was a caring wife and exceptional mother, and devoted most of her life to keeping the home and raising her three children: Jesse, 32, of Elmo, Josh, 26 of Gladstone, MO, and Jacob, 12, of Elmo. She enjoyed gardening and cooking, and also reading and singing. Genealogy research was also a passion. She also managed the Elmo Rural Housing, and assisted in the care of her mother-in-law Edith. She was a generous, hard-working woman with a love of children. She will be sadly missed by her family and those that knew her.
She is survived by her husband and sons, and also brothers Lavern, Louis, Larry, Tim, and Ed Luncsford of Des Moines, IA, her sister Shirlee (Luncsford) Uher of Brazoria, TX, her grandmother Annie (Keim) Myers, Des Moines, her mother-in-law, Edith Marsh, Maryville, MO, and many other relatives who loved her dearly. Deborah was preceded in death by her mother Beverly, her sister Jeanette (Luncsford) Marsh, her father LeRoy, and her father-in-law Paul Marsh.
Deborah believed strongly in organ donation and her wish to aid another in her passing was granted. Kansas City Funeral Directors have handled her request for cremation, and she will return to her family's home in Elma until a memorial service and burial are set. Notification will be made for these at a later date. Family and friends may pay their respects to the Marsh's as they wish, and the family suggests memorial gifts to St. Jud Children's Research Hospital, Children's Mercy Hospitals, and the New Nodaway Humane Society.

 

Martin, Wilda Regina Crowell, age 85, of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Care Center, Villisca, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 11 A.M., Thursday, July 14, 2005, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Clarinda, Iowa with Rev. Dr. Mary Hansen officiating. Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Wilda Martin Memorial Fund for Elementary School Library Books or to the Martin Endowment Fund at Glenn Miller Birthplace Society.

Wilda Regina Crowell Martin was born in Albia, IA on Jan. 3, 1920, to Kate (Webb) and Hollis Crowell. She spent her early years in the Albia and Lovilla area. While still young, her family moved to Oskaloosa, IA where she attended school. It was there, her senior year, that she met a new classmate, Jack Bower Martin. She was the yearbook editor and he was the yearbook photographer, interests that would follow them through their next 66 years together. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1937 as valedictorian and then attended American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She then worked at the Pratt Paper Company in Des Moines while Jack attended the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago.

She was married to Jack on Sept. 21, 1941, in Oskaloosa, IA and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just prior to her husband's death, Oct. 10, 2001. Two children were born to Wilda and Jack, Katherine Marie and Lucinda Jane.

Wilda and Jack moved to Clarinda in 1941 and stayed until Jack joined the Navy. She then returned to Oskaloosa until his discharge in 1946. They then returned to Clarinda to make their home.

Wilda attended Clarinda Community College, graduating in 1959, again as valedictorian. She then began her teaching career in Villisca, IA. She continued her education through night classes, correspondence courses and summer school. She received her BA in 1966 and her MA in 1971 from Drake University in Des Moines.

She continued as a first grade teacher in Villisca until her retirement in 1982. Wilda loved teaching elementary school children and she touched many lives with her abilities and love of learning. Many of her students kept in touch and this was continued as she lived in the Villisca Good Samaritan Care Center.

Wilda was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Westminster Women's Group, KH Chapter of PEO, Mensa International, American Association of University Women, Drake University Alumni Association, Villisca Education Association, National Education Association and the Iowa State Education Association, serving many years on the Professional Rights and Responsibilities Committee. She was also a Lifetime member of the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society, having been instrumental in the formation of the organization 30 years ago.

Wilda was an avid bridge player, having been a member of the same bridge group since 1946. She was an accomplished artist in several areas and an enthusiastic reader. She enjoyed traveling as her oldest daughter lived in Europe for 27 years. She also accompanied her husband to Mexico several times through the VOSH (Volunteer Optometrists Serving Humanity) organization, helping hundreds with better vision care. She was an expert at crossword puzzles, doing them in ink! She also enjoyed collecting antiques, various forms of needlework and working in her flower gardens.

In her retirement, she took the position of Secretary for the newly formed Glenn Miller Birthplace Society. At the same time, she was also the Editor of the Miller Notes, the society newsletter, until 1996. The GMBS "office" having been in their home at this time, she worked daily from morning until night, taking calls from members and other interested parties from all over the world. She worked diligently to track down members of the Miller family and former band members. She loved working with all the members and seeing them at the annual festival in June. She was very proud of the organization and the work that it did to further both the memory of Glenn Miller and music education.

Wilda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack and their daughter, Katherine of Pau, France. Her daughter, Lucinda Martin of Des Moines, and three nieces and a nephew in the San Francisco Bay area survive her.

 

Mather, Twila Watkins, age 64 of Sidney, IA died Friday, January 21, 2005 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA following a brief illness. Twila was born June 9, 1940 in Kansas City, MO to Carl Watkins and Anada (Hudson) Watkins. On April 5, 1958, she married Bobbie Mather in Clarinda, IA. Twila was a Charter Member of the Sidney Lutheran Church also attending the Sidney United Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Rodeo Town Crafters and a former member of the Sidney American Legion Auxiliary.
Twila was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Bobbie Mather of Sidney, IA; son, Kenneth Mather and wife Sharla of Sidney; 3 grandchildren, Steven Mather and wife Amy, Branden Mather, and Asa Mather all of Sidney; 2 great grandchildren, Colby and Logan Mather; 2 sisters, Christine Baker and husband Jack and Lea Lininnger and husband Gary all of Clarinda, IA; several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were 11:00 am Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at the Sidney, IA United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Faye Fedlam officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation and interment of ashes will be at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the family. The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Sidney, IA was in charge of arrangements.

 

Maxwell, Randy, age 48, was born January 17, 1956, in Clarinda, Iowa to Albert and Florence Maxwell and he entered into rest January 16, 2005 at his home in Hollywood, Florida.
Randy was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Eddie Jay Maxwell.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife Deana Maxwell; sons, Greg Maxwell and Scott Maxwell of Hollywood, Florida; brothers, Howard Maxwell of Clarinda, Iowa, John Maxwell of Clarinda, Iowa, Joe Maxwell of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Ed Maxwell of Mobile, Alabama, Tom Maxwell of New Market, Iowa; sisters, Dorothy Maxwell of Clarinda, Iowa and Mary Maxwell of Clarinda, Iowa; nephews; nieces and cousins.
Services are pending in Hollywood, Florida.
Local arrangements are being handled by Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa.

 

Maxwell, Wendell Forrest, son of Ellis Dorsey and Lepha Forrest (Hamm) Maxwell, was born May 16, 1936 in Braddyville, Iowa. He passed away on Thursday afternoon, May 12, 2005 at his home in Clarinda following an extended illness. His early years were spent going to Center School and helping his parents and his aunts on the farm. He also helped his neighbors when he could. Also during his early years, Wendell worked in Mt. Pleasant and Fort Dodge. On August 11, 1957, Wendell married Rosanna Marie Surrell in Clarinda, Iowa. After his marriage he worked for three of the Seed Nursery's in Shenandoah for many years. He also worked in a Glenwood care facility for five years and D & L for a year. After his retirement, Wendell drove a school bus for the Nishna Valley School District. Wendell always had a garden and he was a Red Oak Farmers Market Vendor selling the produce that he grew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Lepha Maxwell; three brothers, Harold and Florence Maxwell, Lowell Maxwell and Darwin Maxwell; sister, Lorena and Charlie Wehrkamp; and two grandchildren, Danual Eddie Fidler and Marci ReAnn Harper. Wendell is survived by his wife Rosanna of Clarinda; children: Anna Marie Miller and her husband Billie of Clinton, MO, Lepha Lucille Fidler and her husband Bill of Hawleyville, IA, Timothy Wendell Maxwell of Creston, IA, Mary Ella Adams and her husband Orval of Orient, IA, Debbie Jean Wheeler and her husband Kevin of Clarinda, Joseph Eric Maxwell and his wife Sara of Creston, IA, Toni Lynn Eberly and her husband Tim of Clarinda; 32 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Harold Surrell and his wife Marie of Corning, IA and Dick Sebeniecher and his wife Janice of Blue Grass, IA; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at the Church of God, Shenandoah, with Marcia Gilbert Campbell and Billie Miller officiating. Pallbearers were grandchildren with great grandchildren as honoraries. Burial will be at Shearer Cemetery, Braddyville, Ia. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Clarinda is in charge of arrangements.

 

McCreight, Eleanor Elizabeth, 92, of Tucson (formally LaCrosse, WI) born March 29, 1913 in Coin, IA died May 6, 2005. She is survived by her husband Harold, children John (Colleen) and Jerold (Susan), 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Eleanor was a graduate of Peru State Teachers College and taught grade school in Coin, IA. She was a long time member of PEO and was an avid supporter of its causes. Eleanor's family wishes to thank the staff of Lisa's Adult Care for their loving care during Eleanor's illness. A private memorial will be held for the family in respect of Eleanor's wishes. McCune, Malinda Ann Prickett Ray - Malinda Ann Prickett was born Jan 7th, 1837 in Bartholomew county, Ind., and died February 10th, 1916, age 79 years, 1 month and 23 days.

She was united in marriage to John Ray, Sept 12th, 1852. To this union ten children were born, five girls and five boys--Elizabeth and Myrtle died in infancy, Isaac P. died November 8th, 1888. Those living are as follows: Thomas J., of Ellston; Mrs Belle Fegins of Walleave, Oregon, Henry N. of Gravity, Mrs Nancy Easter of Laredo, Mo., John I. of Freemont, Nebr., J. Frank of Minature, Nebr., and Mrs Lucy Drennen of New Market. There are at present, 25 grand children and 49 great-grand children.

Her husband, John Ray, died Feb 26th, 1873. She was again married to Thomas D. McCune, Mar 4th, 1880, he having departed this life Mar 25th, 1907.

She united with the church of Christ in 1849 at the age of 12 years from which time until her death she had implicit faith in her Lord and Savior. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Sunday morning conducted by Rev W.H. Robb. Interment in Memory Cemetery.

McKinley, F. Dale was born to Frank M. and Persis Boyington Huey on June 25, 1918, in Baldwin, Illinois and died at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, Iowa, on Sunday, February 13, 2005. She graduated from high school in Sparta, Illinois in 1935, and she attended Monmouth College, Illinois from 1935-1937. Dale taught at a country school in Randolph County, Illinois from 1937-1939. On June 28, 1939, she was united in marriage to Harold E. McKinley of Page County, Iowa where she moved and lived for the remainder of her life. She and Harold had three children and raised them on the farm they purchased north of College Springs, Iowa. Dale resumed her career as an elementary school teacher in 1960 and earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1966. She taught in the South Page and Clarinda School systems before retiring in1980. Dale and Harold moved to Clarinda in 1995, and she moved to the Eiler House in 2002.
Dale is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Roger Huey; sister, Fern Thompson. She is survived by her three children: son, Kenneth and daughter-in-law, Mary of Stillwater, Oklahoma; daughters, Susan and son-in-law, William Oakes of Omaha, Nebraska and Mary Anne and son-in-law, Philip Gibson of Coin, Iowa; granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Carolyn and Alan Forster of Round Rock, Texas, Katherine and Steve Couch of Allen, Texas, and Sarah and Jay Rhoten of Urbandale, Iowa; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Michael and Kristie McKinley of rural Clarinda, Iowa; grandsons, Tom Oakes of Portland, Oregon and Pat Oakes of Omaha, Nebraska; great grandchildren, Jessica, Michael, Abby and Emily Forster; Evan, Austin and Courtney Couch; Michael and Zachary McKinley; and Skye Rhoten; sister and brother-in-law, Marian and Donald Cairns of Webster Groves, Missouri; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Vera Huey of Effingham, Illinois; sisters-in-law, Martha McCleary of Winchester, Virginia; Margaret Carter of Earlville, Illinois; and Mary McKinley of rural Clarinda, Iowa; brother-in-law, Robert McKinley of Siler City, North Carolina; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Joyce McKinley of Quincy, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews, and cousins.
Dale was a member of the College Springs Presbyterian Church serving on many committees, including roles as a Deacon and leader in the Presbyterian Women's group. She belonged to the OK Club and Clarinda Retired Teachers' Club.
Dale's hobbies included baking pies and cookies which she loved to share with family and friends. She gardened and canned in her years on the farm. She raised flowers and vegetables that were enjoyed by her neighbors and friends. Her quilting days began with the construction of quilts for each of her grandchildren after she retired from teaching. She was active in her church for 65 years, leading various groups in worship and fellowship. She loved to call on homebound persons with some goodies from her kitchen and a word of good cheer. She enjoyed traveling, reading and visiting with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and many former students, friends and colleagues.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M., on Saturday, February 19, 2005, at the College Springs Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jim Crapson officiating. Visitation at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home will be 5-7 P.M., Friday, February 18, 2005. Private family burial will be at the Maple Hill Cemetery at College Springs. Memorials may be directed to the College Springs Presbyterian Church or to the Clarinda Foundation McKinley Education Scholarship Fund.

 

Means, Clark Earl - Funeral services for Clark Earl Means of Villisca, IA, were held April 21, 2205, at the United Methodist Church in Villisca, with Pastor Gordon Scott officiating. Burial was in the Villisca Cemetery.

Clark Means died Monday, April 18, 2005, at his home in Villisca. He was born May 6, 1912, in Montgomery County, IA, and raised on the family farm east of Villisca, IA, the son of Clyde Earl Means and Eva Hattie (Johnson) Means. He attended East #1 (Findley) country school before riding his horse to town daily for high school. After graduating from Villisca High School in 1930, he began work at the lumberyard. He also worked at the Farmers Store. Clark attended John Deere mechanics school in Waterloo and became the local service man for John Deere at Danielson Implement.

Clark met Marie Casey in 1936. In 1941 he purchased 120 acres adjacent to the family farm and began farming. Clark and Marie were married February 24, 1942 in Omaha, NE. To this union two sons were born, Stanley Allen and Dennis Earl. Clark enjoyed raising livestock and working the soil. They retired and built a new home in Villisca in 1977.

Clark was a member of the Villisca United Methodist Church and Farm Bureau. Clark and Marie camped throughout the Midwest as members of Waubonsie Ramblers Camping Club. They also belonged to Circle 8 Square Dance for 35 years, and enjoyed square dancing while wintering in Texas. Woodworking was a favorite pastime. Clark enjoyed the family and looked forward to their visits. His grandchildren enjoyed challenging "Grandpa" to a game of cards.

Clark was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Harold Means.

He is survived by his wife Marie of Villisca, IA; sons Stanley Means and wife Karen, and Dennis Means and wife Pat, all of Villisca, IA; six grandchildren, Brent Means and wife Billee of Villisca, IA, Clint Means and wife Shona of Villisca, IA, Robyn Benco and husband Joe of Scottsdale, AZ, Chad Means and wife Courtney of Villisca, IA, Teresa Wacha and husband Tom of Ames, IA and Tyson Means and wife Tina of Villisca, IA; seven great grandchildren, Kelsey, Tyler, Baillee, Brodee, Chloey, Julia and Camden, plus other relatives and friends.

Mick, Raymond E.

Raymond E. "Ray" Mick, 71, of Skidmore, passed from this
life on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at the St. Francis
Hospital.
Born on May 11, 1936 in Coin, Iowa he was the son of the
late Hilton Mick and Edna (Hall) Crabbs.
He was of the Baptist Faith and was a Veteran serving in the
U.S. Air Force and a retired employee from energizer and was
formerly a truck driver.

 

Miller, Eldon Weston, age 91, of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, February 09, 2005, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 12, 2005, at the Church of Christ, Siam, Iowa with Loren Daly officiating. Masonic services will be held 6:30 p.m., Friday, February 11, 2005, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa and visitation with the family to follow. Burial will be in the Siam Cemetery, Siam, Iowa. A memorial will be established. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Eldon Weston Miller was born August 5, 1913, near Siam, Iowa, to John Weston Miller and Pearl (Summers) Miller. He grew up in the Siam area and went to school there. He married Anna Beery July 28, 1936 at Shenandoah, Iowa. They celebrated 68 years of marriage. Born to this union were Norma Jean Miller, Joyce Miller Nielsen, Marsha Griffith Nielsen, John Miller, June Chavez and Mary Lou Lindburg. Eldon was a lifelong farmer in the Siam area. He was an active lifelong member of the Siam Church of Christ where he was a Sunday School teacher. Eldon was a 60 + year member of the Masonic Plumb Lodge #285. In his spare time, Eldon enjoyed fishing, baseball, reading, geography, and storytelling. His role model was Will Rogers, "I never met a man I didn't like". He was the most honest man that his children have known.
Preceding Eldon in death were his parents; daughters, Norma Jean Miller and Joyce Nielsen; sons-in-law, Ed Chavez and Larry Griffith and granddaughter, Teresa Leland. Survivors include his wife Anna of Clarinda, Iowa; daughter, Marsha Griffith Nielsen and her husband Knud of Fort Morgan, Colorado; John Miller and his wife Betty of New Market, Iowa; daughter, June Chavez of Denver, Colorado; Mary Lou Lindburg and her husband Dave of Villisca, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

 

Miller, Mildred (Tillie) Semmons, age 91, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Sunday, May 15, 2005 at the Westridge Quality Care and Rehab Center in Clarinda. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda with Rev. Ted DeHass officiating. Millie (Tillie) Miller was born April 27, 1914, at Guthrie Center, Iowa, to Fred Semmons and Minnie (Chubick) Semmons. She was married to Gail Miller in 1965. She worked as a grocery clerk at the Super Value grocery store in Clarinda. Prior to that, she worked at the Miller Produce Company for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clarinda and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed helping other people.
Preceding Tillie in death were her parents, her husband Gail, two sons: David and Darold Brown; two daughters: Phyllis Jones and Connie Hoanker; a grandson Terry Brown, and a great-grandson Matthew Walker.
Survivors include her daughter Mary Ann Nicholls and husband Edward of Council Bluffs, Iowa, eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

 

Miller, Richard W. - Hastings resident, Richard W. Miller, 56, of 1100 E. South St #14 died Sunday, May 21 2006 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Grand Island, Nebraska. Graveside memorial service and burial with military rites were Friday, May 26, 2006; at Fort McPherson National Cemetery,
Maxwell, Nebraska with Chaplain Norval Holtmeier officiating.

Mr. Miller was born June 13, 1949 in Bedford, Iowa to Wayne and June (Barnes) Miller. He graduated from Bedford High school and enlisted n the United States Army on January 12, 1968 and was discharged on January 12, 1971.

He married Gwen F. Melton. They moved from South Dakota to Hastings, Nebraska in 1994.

He was a plumber and a member of D.A.V.

Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his mother.

Montgomery, James Potter, age 92, of Green Valley, Arizona, died Friday, May
5, 2006, at Desert Pines Eldercare, Sahuarita, Arizona.

James Potter Montgomery was born August 11, 1913, at Shellsburg, Iowa. He was the son of Melville and Merle Montgomery. J.P. grew up in Missouri Valley, Iowa, and graduated from Missouri Valley High School. He attended Pharmacy School at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and was married in 1935 to Mary Short.

After pharmacy school J.P. and Mary moved to Shelby, Iowa, where they ran their first drug store. Through the years J.P. had many pharmacy jobs: traveling Iowa with Rexall Drug sales, managing a drug store in East Moline, Illinois, and finally in 1952 purchasing the Hawley Rexall Drug Store in Clarinda, Iowa.

J.P. was very active in the City of Clarinda: President of Iowa Western Community College, a member of Lions Club and the Indurstrial Corporation, director of the Chamber of Commerce, and a liaison with the Small Business Association.

Preceding J.P. in death were his parents; his wife Mary; and brother, Richard Montgomery.

Survivors include his sister Elizabeth Christensen of Norwalk, Iowa; son James G. Montgomery and wife Diana of Green Valley, Arizona; grandchildren: Stacy Berringer and husband James of Lincoln, Nebraska; Wendy Schoen and husband Jason of Blue Springs, Missouri; Scott Montgomery and wife Karrie of Sierra Vista, Arizona; and Adam Buck and wife Trisha of Indianola, Iowa; great grandchildren: Jaraka, Skyler, and Dakota Berringer; Geren and Graceyn Schoen; and Morgan and Megan Montgomery. Nieces and nephews include Judy Reeve of Sun City, Arizona; and Connie Lovell, Karen Graziano, and Steve Christensen all of Des Moines, Iowa.

 

Morris, Ronald Leon (Ronnie), 48 of Pacific Junction, Iowa entered into eternal rest on January 9, 2005 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was born July 12, 1956 in Omaha, NE to Oscar Leon and Ethel Belle (Foreman) Morris.
Ronnie faithfully served his country in the Navy from 1973-77. He was employed with Allen Hughes Construction. He enjoyed life to the fullest and was always playing a prank on someone for a good laugh. He loved to spend time with his family and friends and went on numerous poker runs. In his spare time you could find him playing pool, fishing or working on his bike.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his grandparents. He is survived by his son: Dana Morris and daughter: Sara Morris both of Council Bluffs, IA; companion: Cindi Babb of Pacific Junction, IA; parents: Oscar and Ethel Morris of Clarinda, IA; John and Janett Babb of Glenwood, IA; sisters: Deborah Hurd of Neola, IA; Donna Cunningham of Coin, IA; Carol Thomas of Clarinda, IA; Barb Hulsebus of Tennant, IA; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

 

Morrow, Edwena Hull, age 84, of College Springs, Iowa, died Friday, January 14, 2005, at Westridge Care & Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral Services will be held 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at the Presbyterian Church, College Springs, Iowa with Rev. Carl Phillips officiating. Edwena Marie Hull Morrow was born December 26, 1920, to William Clarence Hull and Marie (Adkins) Hull south of Blanchard, Iowa. Edwena attended Shady Brook Country School and was a 1938 graduate of Amity High School, College Springs, Iowa. She was united in marriage March 21, 1940, to George R. Morrow at Troy, Kansas. They farmed in the College Springs area. Edwena was very active in her community and her church, She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, College Springs, Iowa, serving as Deacon and Chair of the Women's Missionary Sewing and serving on the Altar Floral Committee. She belonged to the ATT, Birthday Club, TOPS; was a 4-H leader for many years; an Honorary 4-H member, a member of the Fair Board Carnival Committee; a member of the Women's Farm Bureau and was Homemaker of the Year in 1971; served as Honor Society sponsor for South Page School and served on the Amity alumni banquet committee. Edwena's interests included farming, sewing, quilting, flower arranging and costume designs. She had a special interest in youth programs including the foreign exchange program, FFA, FHA, 4-H, and National Honor Society at South Page. Many young people counted on Edwena as their confidante and counselor.
Preceding Edwena in death were her parents; husband, George R. Morrow (04/29/1983); son, Charles Morrow; sons-in-law, Bill Ellison and Harry-Jae Elder; great granddaughter, Emily Ford; brothers: Kenneth Hull, Dean Hull and DeWayne Hull; sisters, Beloice and Helen Hull. Survivors include children: Donnett Elder of Regina Saskatchewan, Canada; Lois Jean Ellison of Braddyville, Iowa; Denise Johnston of Coin, Iowa; Kimberly Lumpa and husband Gary of Iowa City, Iowa; James Morrow and wife Cecile of Phoenix, Arizona; daughter-in-law, Joyce Ann Morrow of Olathe, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren; five step grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; thirteen step great grandchildren and sister, Velda Mae Anderson of Des Moines, Iowa.

 

Motter, Dana Ann - Dana Ann Motter was born June 12, 1945 at Mason City, Iowa to Henry Eugene Motter, Sr. and Phyllis Louise (Short) Motter. She had four brothers: Henry, Jack, Noel, and Nile.
Dana graduated Mason City High School and since then has held several jobs. Dana's true love in life were animals. She volunteered at humane societies and took care of her loving cat, Val.

Dana enjoyed her many friends which she easily got acquainted with quickly. She took care of her elderly neighbour ladies helping when she could but she would never let them return the favour always insisting on being self-sufficient.

Dana passed away at her home in Clarinda. Independent as always, she passed away alone and was found by friends Monday, Feb. 15, 2010. Her wish was for her and her feline friend, Val, to be scattered together in Colorado which friends will do later.

Memorial services were held Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel with Pastor Robert Smith officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society or to a fund established in Dana's name. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. www.EFC.cc.

 

Murphy, Herbert Lawrence, 87, passed from this life on Wednesday, August 9, 2006 from cancer at Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitation or services at this time. Private memorial graveside services for the family will be held at Elmwood Cemetery, in Coin, Iowa, at a later date.

Herbert was born the son of Bert C. and Mary L. Blessing Murphy on June 5, 1919, (his father's birthday), on a farm in rural Page County, Iowa, near the town of Coin, Iowa. He attended Coin Consolidated School, and later served on the Board of Education for nine years. On June 4, 1936, Herbert married Rachel A. Gibson. To this union, five children were born, Phyllis, Elaine, Donna, Mervin and Barbara.

He was a former member of the Coin United Methodist Church, of which he had been very instrumental in with the building phase of their new church. For many years, Herbert farmed near Coin. He was also formerly employed as a Field Auditor for the Iowa Auditor of State for ten years. Later, Herbert was employed as the Program Manager for the Polk County Auditor for 11 years, until his retirement in 1985.

On March 1, 1975, Herbert married Pauline (Hillebran) Stringham at Tingley, Iowa. With this union, he acquired an extended family of five step-children, Tedde, Karen, Rand, Kent and Vicki. In 1973, Herbert moved to the Des Moines area and then, he and Pauline moved to Windsor Heights in December of 1976, where they made their home. He was a member of the Tingley United Methodist Church.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 31 years, Pauline Murphy of Windsor Heights; four children, Phyllis I. Murphy of Pittsburg, PA, Donna M. Murphy of Scottsdale, AZ, Mervin R. Murphy of Vancouver, WA and Barbara A. Murphy of Clarinda, IA; five step-children, Tedde Blunck and his wife Cathy of Austin, TX, Karen Payne of Blue Springs, MO, Rand Blunck and his wife Edith of Glendale, AZ, Kent Blunck and his wife Donna of Des Moines and Vicki Sickel and her husband Tim of West Des Moines; one sister, Edna L. Murphy of Sioux City, IA; 15 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

Herbert was preceded in death by his daughter, Elaine McCowen; his brother, Richard Murphy; and one sister, Theda Murphy.
