Clifford Wayne Baker was born November 3, 1946 in Jackson, Michigan, the son of Edward H. and Dorothy L. (Anderson) Baker. He passed away from accidental causes on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at his home near Essex, Iowa at the age of 68 years, 4 months and 1 day.
Cliff grew up in California and Michigan. Following high school he served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He later obtained his Master’s Degree and worked as a Rehabilitation Counselor for 25 years in California and for approximately 10 years after he moved to Iowa. During his younger years in California, Cliff was an avid runner and cyclist, having ran in two different marathons. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed playing his guitar and listening to Bob Dylan music.
He was preceded in death by his father; and his wife, Charla.
Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Hill of Essex, Iowa; his sisters, Karen Baker and her wife Lana Nimmo of San Diego, California, Denise Baker and David Kreischer of Essex, Iowa; nephews, Richard Schulenberg and his wife Jaime of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Clifford Schulenberg and his wife Jill of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Max Baker and his wife Brandy of Shenandoah, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends.
A memorial visitation will take place on Sunday, March 8, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Kirsch Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah. There will be a private family inurnment held at a later date. A memorial fund is being established in Cliff’s name

Barnes, Arthur M. - Art, 79, of San Diego, CA and more recently Fairfax, VA, a former Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) official, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2015 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Art is the husband of Charlene (Randell) Barnes and the father of Lisa, Jannine and Arthur.

Charlene Barnes and her children have established memorial funds at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the DEA Association of Former Federal Narcotics Agents (AFFNA) in Art's name. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions to these organizations. Links are provided below.

Brown, Marvin Leo - Marvin Leo Brown was born April 7, 1929 at DeSmet, South Dakota to Freddie Edward and Estella Fay (Wilson) Brown. Marvin was 9 months old when the family moved to Hopkins, MO to farm, and then to Conway until 1943 when they moved to New Market. During school in New Market he met Georgia Corbin and they were a couple from then on. The two were married December 12, 1947 at the Baptist parsonage in New Market after Marvin learned he had land he could farm. They had two daughters: Vivian born December 31, 1949 and Vicki born March 2, 1951.
Marvin was a farmer and his love of raising horses and cattle continued all his life. He loved to raise, break, train and race horses. He got his first horse at age 4 and still had one when he passed away Sunday, March 29, 2015 at his home in New Market, IA.
While farming for himself he also worked from 1954 to 1961 at the Mental Health Institute as laundry foreman. As he would have had it he had the last horse drawn vehicle in the facility which went around picking up laundry. Later he worked in the farm and grounds department at the MHI. He always had a huge garden at home and a love of flowers. Another pastime was raising and hunting with dogs, especially coon hounds, beagles and other breeds for coyote hunting.
Marvin was a man of faith who was there to help anyone anytime they needed his assistance. He was a master story teller and could keep his family and friends entertained with details of many adventures. And it might be said that his main career was that of Grandpa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Vivian Pickering; grandson Stephen Pickering; son-in-law Al Harris; and siblings Opal, Ludlo, and Duane.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Georgia of New Market; daughter Vicki Brown of Clarinda and Larry Stamps; grandchildren Malena Sump of Rockwell City, IA, Tina (Randy) Sweat of Albany, MO, Charity (Doug) Andrews of Omaha, NE, Tammie Pickering of Albany, MO, Ginger (Jason) Mohr of Waterloo, IA, and Brandon Harris of Clarinda; great grandchildren: Whitney, Slade, Valerie and Troy, Miranda, Tyler and Ryan, Dusty, Dakota, Dameon, and Hunter, Shonne, Brett, Tayah, and Jersie, Maliyah, and Hayden; great great grandchildren: Gracelynd, Cyson, and Atreas.
He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Graveside services are 1:30 Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Old Memory Cemetery, New Market, IA with Bob Riddle officiating. Pallbearers are Jason Mohr, Doug Andrews, Brandon Harris, Randy Sweat, Jon Brown, and Tyler Sump. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Stamps, Larry Miller, Joey Hamilton and Gary Hutcheson. Music selections are “Temporary Home” and “How Great Thou Art” by Carrie Underwood and “Wild Flowers” by Tom Petty.

Brown, Ruby - Ruby Brown died at local apartment
Funeral services for Mrs Ruby Brown, 77, will be held at 2 pm Saturday at Walker's Funeral Home following her death at her home Tuesday night.
Mrs Brown retired from active work as abstractor and secretary more recently in the office of the Clarinda Municipal. Ruby and her husband, Frank, came from Dakota to Bedford, where Mrs Brown worked with an attorney. In Clarinda she was an abstractor for Orville C. Greene, worked in office of Parris Dunn and went to Tennessee for a short time to work with Cecil Parris.
The daughter of I.J. and Etie Reese Grindstaff, she was born at Mt Vernon, Wash, on Sept 24, 1891. She was married to Frank E. Brown who died in 1951. She is survived by three brothers, H.L. Grindstaff of Rochester, Wash; Clifton Grindstaff of Jacksonville, Fla; and Stanley Grindstaff of Los Angeles, Calif; and two sisters, Mrs C.E. Ridener of Chehalis, Wash; and Mrs Mabel Lollis of Kansas City. Mrs Lollis and son, Robert, have been here, making arrangements.
The Rev John Beebout will be in charge of services with burial at the Clarinda cemetery.

Brown, Scott Randall - Scott Brown, age 54, of Clarinda, Iowa, entered into peace Monday, April 6, 2015, at his residence in Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 10, 2015 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Bedford, Iowa with Jeffrey Cummings officiating. Burial will be in the Bedford Fairview Cemetery.

Scott Randall Brown, born March 23, 1961 was chosen by Leland and Bonnie (Polk) Brown to be their son on July 28, 1961. He died unexpectedly at his home in Clarinda, Iowa, on April 6, 2015 at the age 54 years and two weeks.

Scott was baptized and confirmed in the Bedford United Methodist Church, and attended church camps. He was a member of the Boy Scouts and 4-H. Scott enjoyed family vacations as he was growing up, especially Disney World, The Black Hills, The Ozarks and fishing trips to Minnesota. He attended school in Bedford where he participated in speech, vocal and instrumental music and sports. Scott graduated with the class of 1979. He attended college for a short time at Mountain View Baptist College in Didsbury, Alberta, Canada.

On April 13, 1982, he joined the United States Army, spending over two and a half years in Germany. He was discharged in 1986.

Scott was married to Amy Graham on August 6, 1988, and Jessica Nicole Brown, the treasure of his life, was born of this union January 4, 1994. .

Scott graduated from Driving Academy Incorporated, a truck driving program based in Lamoni, Iowa. Following that he was an over the road trucker. Scott also worked as a car salesman at Cardinal Auto for several years as well as working at Foster Amusements. On January 15, 2014, Scott was severely injured in an automobile accident west of Shenandoah, Iowa. After several weeks at Creighton Hospital in Omaha, he was transferred to the Grand Island, Nebraska Veterans’ Hospital, and dismissed from there on June 20, 2014. Family and friends cared for him until December 20, 2014, when he moved to his own home in Clarinda.

Scott received many acts of kindness from numerous people, and was very grateful for these generous deeds. Scott always had a smile on his face when surrounded by friends and family.

Survivors include his daughter, Jessica Brown and former wife, Amy Brown of Columbus, Nebraska; parents, Leland and Bonnie Brown of Clarinda; sister, Sheryl Brown of Seattle, Washington; brother, Steven Brown of Sidney, Iowa. He is also survived by other relatives and friends

Campbell, James Anderson- James Anderson Campbell, the only child of Samuel M and Reta (Anderson) Campbell, was born on September 28, 1924 in Newark, NJ. As a boy, Jim lived in Kearny, NJ, graduating from Kearny High School in January 1943. He immediately enlisted in the US Marine Corps, serving over three years during World War II. He was sent to Chemical Warfare School, and was a flame thrower while stationed in the Marshall Islands, I E Shima, Okinawa, and Japan. When Jim returned home, he married Iris Crawford, the love of his life, on December 12, 1947. Together they raised their three children, and were married for 61 years.

After attending The Citadel in Charleston, SC and Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, Jim was graduated with a DSC (DPM) degree from Temple University School of Chiropody (Podiatry). In August of 1951, Dr. Campbell, Iris, and Marilyn moved to Clarinda, IA to set up his practice. He practiced for 55 years, retiring in 2006.

Doc was very active in his community. In 1952 he became a member of the Masonic Lodge, and was DeMolay Dad for several years. He was elected to the Clarinda Hospital Board of Trustees for 12 years, serving as Chairman of the Board during the time the first addition was added. He was District Commissioner for Boy Scouts for four years, a member of the Clarinda Booster Club for over 25 years, and a volunteer for Clarinda Swim Team and at track meets. Before the dorms were built, Iris and Jim housed Clarinda Junior College students for six years. They were also part of the mentoring program for over 10 years.

Doc loved football. Along with attending all Clarinda games, home and away, he would watch football practice and give rides home to players who lived in the country. His favorite teams were the Clarinda Cardinals, NY Giants, Temple Owls, and Iowa Hawkeyes.

Doc was a devoted member of the American Legion, becoming a member in April 1946. He has held offices locally in Clarinda Sergy Post 98, as well as many offices at the County, District, and Department level. Doc always participated in Veterans Day and Memorial Day programs. Since he was old enough to vote, he has been a very active member of the Republican Party.

Iris and Jim joined the Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1951, and were faithful members. Jim served on many committees, was an Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, and Usher.

Doc loved living in Clarinda, where he made many life-long friends. He enjoyed Glenn Miller Days, had fun on the golf course, and liked driving around the countryside each year, watching the progress of the crops. The only things he missed about NJ were his family and the Jersey shore.

Doc enjoyed life, and lived it to its fullest. He did enjoy a good cigar and a scotch and water. He loved people, and was very social. He always said that people have more fun than anyone. He was devoted to his family, and lived the American Legion motto: For God and Country.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Iris, in 2009. He is survived by his children, Marilyn Bayless and husband Dale of Shenandoah, IA, Jane Jensen of Temecula, CA, and James Jr. of Forrest City, AR; grandchildren Jacob Paige, Matthew Corey, Mark Bayless, and Luke Jensen; great grandchildren Jacob and Rece Paige, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Clarinda, with Rev. Doug Roberts officiating, Linda Armstrong organist, and honorary bearers Jacob E. Paige, Matthew R. Corey, Mark D. Bayless, Lucas T. Jensen, and the American Legion Sergy Post #98 of Clarinda. Military honors provided by the American Legion. Interment will be at Clarinda Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Westminster Presbyterian Church or American Legion Sergy Post #98.

Cassat, Patricia "Pat" Ann Wickliff - Patricia “Pat” Cassat, age 88, of Clarinda, Iowa, entered into peace Saturday, April 11, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The life of Patricia Ann (Wickliff) Cassat came to an end April 11, 2015 at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City. “Pat,” 88, of Overland Park, Kansas was a longtime Clarinda, Iowa resident. Born in Indianola, Iowa to Donald and Hazel Wickliff, Pat grew up in Fairfield, Iowa, attended Fairfield High School and later, Parsons College where she met her future husband, Kenneth Cassat.

Pat was a life-long learner and teacher. She was an avid student of history and government and taught classes, often in animated fashion, to Clarinda High School students on those subjects for many years. She was also the family historian who researched, documented and recited the family genealogy in loving fashion. She also produced award-winning local and regional historical programs.

Pat never lacked for activities into which she would pour her insatiable energy. She was an active member and leader of PEO, Garden Club, Bridge Club, The Glenn Miller Birthplace Society, and a founding member of the Nodaway Valley Historical Museum. Pat was a long-time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and served as an elder, Sunday school teacher and choir member. Her passions included cooking, the bigger the party the better; and flower gardening which brought her and her neighbors great joy. A masterful seamstress and artist, her creative talents were beyond reproach. Though she once designed windows for JCPenney and cards for Hallmark, countless more people enjoyed her artistry by way of her annual Christmas cards and decorations. For decades, friends looked forward to a cleverly designed, personally produced Christmas card from Pat. Her most consistent activity lacked a formal organization; it was the tireless service to people in need, always one to help, frequently without being asked, preferably without being acknowledged.

Pat Cassat is preceded in death by her parents, her brother William, grandson Christopher, and her husband Kenneth, with whom she shared life and love for 60 years.

She is survived by her brother Pete (Fern) Wickliff of Fairfield, Iowa, and children she loved beyond words: Jeffrey (Becky) Cassat of Des Moines, Iowa; Dr. James (June) Cassat of Washington, Missouri; Jamie (Dan) Fassnacht of Parkville, Missouri; and Jonathon (Susan) Cassat of Overland Park, Kansas. No greater love did she have for her children and for her 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Cavner, Merlyn Lee - Merlyn Cavner Sr., age 79, of Clarinda, Iowa, entered into peace Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the Veteran Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska. Merlyn Lee Cavner was born August 27, 1935, in Taylor County, Iowa to Samuel Roy Cavner and Flovia (Fine) Cavner. He grew up in the Siam/Braddyville area attending country schools and Siam school and graduated from Braddyville High School. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict 1958-1960. Merlyn and Shirley Simmons were united in marriage July 5, 1960 n Clarinda, Iowa. They were blessed with three sons, Merlyn Lee, Jr., Dennis and Benjamin.

Merlyn worked construction for many years with Henningson Construction of Atlantic. He was a truck driver and operated heavy equipment and whatever needed to be done for the company. During his working years, the family lived in various parts of Iowa including Olie, Atlantic and Clarinda.

Merlyn loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping with the family, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed woodworking; making many doll cradles and tinkering in the garage. He was a fifty year member of the Eagles Lodge. Merlyn was definitely a people person and loved to visit with anyone at anytime.

Preceding Merlyn in death were his parents; wife, Shirley (10/5/1995); infant son, Benjamin Roy Cavner; brother, Carl Cavner; sisters, Bertha Cavner and Rosealtha Cavner.

Christensen, Theresa Laughlin - Theresa Christensen, age 83, of Coin, Iowa, passed away on February 23, 2015 at the Winters Park Nursing Home in Garland, Texas. Theresa was born on October 13, 1931, in Imogene, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard James and Irene Ellen (Gutchenritter) Laughlin. Although she was christened with the name Florence, those who knew and loved her called her Theresa.

She attended and graduated from St. Patrick's Catholic School in Imogene, Iowa. After graduation from high school, Theresa worked at the Shenandoah Hand Community Hospital as an aide. She met Kennard Christensen while he was in the Marine Corps and stationed in California. They married on December 30, 1950 (Kenny's birthday) and moved to California for several years while Kenny served his time in the Marines. They returned to Coin to live and raise a family.

She was a long-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Shenandoah, Iowa. Theresa was placed on this Earth to be a loving mother and homemaker. She cherished this role and found it to be wonderful and fulfilling. She was the proud mother of four children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Theresa always considered Coin, Iowa her home but in 2006, Theresa went to Richardson, Texas to stay with her daughter, JoAnn. She attended daily mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She made many friends at church, at the weekly hair appointments and at the senior citizen center. Theresa was born with a huge giving heart and always thought of others and never of herself. Sometimes her thoughtfulness was extreme but that just showed the size of her caring for others. She loved to talk, tell her favorite stories to her children and grandchildren, and loved to stay in touch with her siblings and friends with her daily phone calls. She loved to laugh and make others laugh. The people that she touched will all say that she was quite a woman. She loved to sew, cook and bake for her family who remembers her wonderful fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, lemon angel food cake (her special recipe), homemade bread, dinner rolls and cinnamon rolls just to name a few.

She was preceded in death by husband Kennard, her parents, her brother Jerome Laughlin, sisters Rose Korshoj and Jean Eitzen, sisters-in-law and their spouses Don and Mary Lou Pearson, Vernon and Dorothy Grafft and brother-in-law and spouse Merle and Ida Mae Christensen.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Steve Christensen of Eldora, Iowa and his two daughters - Lindsey Christensen of Waterloo, Iowa and Larissa Treloar and husband Landon and son Brady of Waverly, Iowa; JoAnn Murrell of Richardson, Texas and her two children--Kristy Smith and husband Nathan and their three daughters Kinley, Adler and Charlie of Valley View, Texas and son Brendan Murrell and fiancé Page Geath of Garland, Texas; Mike Christensen and wife Susan of Plano, Texas and Doris Christen and husband John and their two children Jennifer and Matthew of LaVista, Nebraska. Surviving siblings are Lois Ludington, Bud Laughlin, Gerald Laughlin, Helen Robinson, Bobby Laughlin, Pat Laughlin and John Laughlin; sister-in-law Jean Laughlin and brother-in-law Hogart Korshoj; and many other relatives and friends.

Conyac, Iva Louise Green - Iva Louise Conyac was born May 15, 1932, the daughter of C.A. and Ada (Harris) Green. She passed away on Saturday morning, March 21, 2015 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 10 months and 6 days.
Iva grew up and attended school in the Stockton, Missouri area. On October 3, 1952, she was united in marriage to Hector “Bud” Conyac, Jr in San Diego, California. This union was blessed with three children, Bobby (Criss), Marcee and Hector, III(Chip).
Iva was a homemaker her entire life raising her three children and later caring for her many grandchildren. She never turned a child away; if one of her children or grandchildren brought a friend over she would take them in and treat them like they were her own. She was a great carpenter building everything from bookends to gun cabinets. She also cared for Bud day and night for eight years after his stroke. She was a member of the Coin United Methodist Church for many years and after moving to Shenandoah she attended Cornerstone Fellowship Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bud; daughter-in-law, Delores Conyac; three sisters and one brother.

Davis, JeRome - JeRome passed away on Monday evening, March 9, 2015 at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah. Services are pending at this time.

JeRome E. Davis was born March 28, 1940 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of O. Eldon and Evelyn (Dunkin) Davis. He passed away on Monday evening, March 9, 2015 at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 74 years, 11 months and 9 days.
JeRome grew up in the Coburg, Iowa area and graduated from Coburg High School in 1959. Following high school he got involved in the men’s clothing business selling men’s accessories for Swanson Clothing in Red Oak, Iowa, Nebraska Clothing in downtown Omaha and The Tandy in Matairie, Louisiana. He retired and moved back to Shenandoah in 2006. JeRome loved cars. He used to race stock cars at the old Peony Park in Omaha and was an avid NASCAR fan today. He enjoyed playing and watching baseball and basketball, cooking and keeping his yard in order.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Nathan; and two sisters, Laurel Anne Parker and Jenelyn Baker.

George Lee Douthit was born October 14, 1934 in rural Braddyville, Iowa to Elmer Douthit and Mabel (Gardener) Douthit. He grew up in the Braddyville/College Springs area graduating from Amity High School in College Springs. He served in the National Guard from 1953-1959. George and Mary Lou Ridnour were united in marriage November 8, 1958 in Shambaugh, Iowa. They were blessed with two sons, Ron and Kevin.

George was a long time employee of Lisle Corporation as shipping supervisor. During his retirement, George enjoyed getting together and visiting with his Lisle family. George and Mary Lou enjoyed traveling to see country western shows in Nashville, Branson and other places. George also enjoyed cars, tractors, woodworking; doing lots of remodeling projects. He liked to eat out with friends and family and also enjoyed going to the casino. His family was important to him and he enjoyed being with his brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, children and grandchildren. George was compassionate and kind and was a caregiver to his wife.

Preceding George in death were his parents; wife, Mary Lou Douthit; brother, Robert Douthit; sister, Francis May Brown.

Doreen Drennen was born October 27, 1922 in rural Page County, Iowa to Carl Sparks and Eva (Jones) Sparks. She grew up in the rural New Market area with her eight siblings. Doreen attended grade school in Conway and LaDoga and graduated from New Market High School. She received her teaching certificate following high school and taught country school. While working at the restaurant of Nole and Gladys Carpenter in New Market, she met Clifford Drennen. They were married on October 10, 1942 in Rockport, Missouri and were blessed with three children, Noreen, Norman and Donna.

Doreen held many positions throughout her life such as teaching, retail (Clarinda Outlet and Grahams), switchboard operator, and a cook at MHI but her favorite job in life was being at home with her family. Doreen enjoyed being a member of the Quilters Guild as well as several other hobbies including puzzles, gardening, bird watching, and attending monthly get togethers with the ladies from the New Market class of 1941. She was very passionate about sewing and quilting, making over 100 quilts and sewing numerous outfits for granddaughter Amy Jo and her dolls. Doreen loved to be outdoors and traveling, every summer, Doreen and Cliff would take their family and head somewhere new in the United States.

Doreen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford Drennen (5/2/1968); daughter, Noreen Brubaker; siblings, Darwin Sparks and wife Helen, Carl Kenneth Sparks, Marlan Frank Sparks and wife Karlyne and Evaleen Sprague and husband Robert.

Finley, Walter Keith - Walter Keith Finley, the only son of Jennie Lucille (Smith) Finley and Walter Raymond Finley was born February 16, 1930 in Shenandoah, Iowa. His mother passed away from complications on March 11, 1930 and he passed away on Thursday morning, February 26, 2015 at the Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Tarkio, Missouri.

Walter graduated from Northboro High School in 1949. He married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Toland, on December 17, 1950 in Northboro at the Methodist Church. He was drafted into the Army on April 17, 1951 and discharged on March 28, 1953. He took his basic training at Ft. Hood, Texas and was sent to Japan to train soldiers with the 401 Houser. He was honorably discharged from the Army. He farmed near Coin, Iowa for 27 years until 1984. He started trucking for Silvey Refrigeration, called Jr. Meat haulers, and then he drove for Heartland Express of Iowa City, Iowa, Hills Brothers of Omaha, Nebraska, and ended his driving career with Essex Elevator where he retired.

He was a member of the Southern Baptist Church in Shenandoah where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the American Legion. When he retired from trucking, he joined the Locust Grove United Methodist Church where his family attended only a few miles from where he lived on the family century farm.

When he left farming the couple moved to Omaha, Nebraska, Red Oak, Iowa, Longmont, Colorado and then back to the family’s century farm near Northboro, Iowa. In their marriage, Keith and Nancy had three children; Walter Rex Finley, who was born while he was overseas, Anthony Elliott Finley and Freida Ann Finley Christianson.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents. Harold (Hal) Ray Geyer was born January 22, 1929 on a farm near Bethany, Missouri the only child of Asa Ozel and Alice Marie (Ross) Geyer. The family moved to Iowa in November of 1936 during a big snow storm. He attended grade school in Hawleyville, Iowa and graduated from Villisca High School in 1948. Hal furthered his education attending college in Layolla, California. During high school, he became a member of the Army National Guard; serving for five years. On June 15, 1954, he was inducted in the United State Army and he served in the Army Security Agency for two years during the Korean conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Post 300 for thirty eight years. Hal and Mildred Wilson were united in marriage on December 7, 1965.

From 1952-1966, Hal worked at North American building fighter jets including the X-15. Most of the astronauts qualified in the X-15. Hal and Millie lived in Colorado where he started his own “all lines” insurance agency. Hal enjoyed flying his airplanes and logged over 6000 hours. He loved rebuilding cars in his spare time. They retired and moved back to Iowa on September 27, 1997.

Preceding Hal in death were his parents and daughter, Linda Gomez.

Graham, Wayne - Wayne passed away Friday, March 20, 2015 at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa

Wayne Eugene Graham, son of Earl William and Hattie Eleanor (Douthit) Graham was born on February 25, 1928 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away on Friday, March 20, 2015 at his home in Shenandoah, at the age of 87.

Growing up in Shenandoah, Wayne attended the Shenandoah Community Schools, graduating from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1945. Wayne excelled in track while at SHS and made it to state in the 800 meters. Following high school, Wayne attended Central College in Pella, Iowa.

Not long after, Wayne was called into service by the U S Army towards the end of WW II. He served from August 1946 through December 1946 in post occupied Japan.

On October 29, 1957, Wayne was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marlene Ann Connell, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah. They made their home in Shenandoah where they raised their four children, James, Kim, Tim and Jenelle.

Over the years, Wayne worked at Central Surveys and Henry Fields Nursery in Shenandoah. For a period of time, Wayne was a baker at a bakery in Columbia City, Indiana before returning to Shenandoah where he was employed with Eaton Corporation. He worked at Eaton's until retiring in 1992.

Wayne was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the AMVETS. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports through the years. He also enjoyed watching professional sports and restoring antiques.

Preceding Wayne in death were his parents; two brothers, Harold and Robert Graham; sister, Gertrude (Graham) Carlson; brother-in-law, Darril Carlson; sister-in-law, Vance Graham; and grandson, Timothy Graham.

Survivors include his loving wife of over 57 years, Marlene of the home; four children, James Graham and wife Cathy of Fayetteville, AR, Kim Walker and husband Clay of Essex, Tim Graham of Shenandoah, and Jenelle Smith and husband Lonnie, Sr, of Fayetteville, AR; 10 grandchildren, John Walker and wife Alicia, Stephanie Robinette and husband Caleb, Monika Carroll and husband Todd, Rick Graham, Kyle Graham, Kaillena Smith, Lonnie Smith, Jr, Grace Graham and William Graham; seven great grandchildren, Jacob, Caden and Kinsley Robinette, Presley and Hudson Walker, and Aidan and Simon Carroll; other relatives and many friends.

Hammargren, Douglas Paul - Douglas Paul Hammargren, son of Evald Reuben and Clarice Marie (Paulson) Hammargren was born on February 14, 1948 in Red Oak, Iowa. He passed away on March 14, 2015, at the age of 67, at the Stanton Care Center in Stanton, Iowa, following a brief illness.

Growing up, Doug's early life was spent in Red Oak and Essex, Iowa. When Doug was less than two years old, his family moved to Essex where he attended the Essex Community Schools, graduating from Essex High School with the Class of 1967. Following high school, Doug enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly served during Vietnam, attaining the rank of Boatswain's Mate Second Class. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on February 1, 1971.

Not long after his return from the Navy, Doug went to work at the Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah beginning in August of 1972. He worked there for over 30 years until retiring in February of 2003. Doug was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Essex.

His military service meant a lot to him and he talked fondly of his memories in the Navy.

Preceding Doug in death were his parents, Evald and Clarice Marie Hammargren; and grandparents, Reuben and Anna Hammargren and Anton and Hilma Paulson. Survivors include his son, Brian Hammargren and his wife, Lisa and their children Andrew and Emily all of Stanton, Iowa; an aunt, June Ann Finch of Tampa, FL; other relatives and many friends

Hein, Merald Dwaine - Merald Dwaine Hein, the son of Leslie Leonard Hein and Minnie Blanche (Whitehead) Hein-Holmes, was born on February 4, 1927 in Dunlap, Iowa. He passed away on March 15, 2015 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age of 88 years, 1 month and 11 days.

Merald grew up in Dunlap, Iowa, then his family moved to Shenandoah when he was a sophomore. He graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1944.

On August 14, 1949 he was united in marriage to Anne Anderson at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Red Oak, Iowa.

Merald farmed all his life, started at his parents home, then Stanton, later bought a farm in the Emerson area, then retired to Shenandoah in 1993.

He was a member of the Emerson Community Club, Board of Directors for Farmer's Mercantile, and Community of Christ Church. He played guitar with friends, the Norris's and Klepinger's, at various church events. He enjoyed traveling, playing golf and a good game of cards. He was also quite the teaser.

Merald was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Virgil, Paul, Robert Wiley, and nephew Tracy Hein.

He is survived by his wife Anne Hein of Shenandoah, Iowa; daughters Jacque Baxter and husband Jack of Shenandoah, Iowa, Nancy Van Dyke and husband Merle of Springfield, Nebraska and Diana Greve and husband Dave of Harlan, Iowa; grandchildren Joel and Jennifer Baxter, Jamie and Matt Smith, Ashley and Dustin Foral, Derek and Kate Van Dyke, Anna and Andrea Greve; four great-grandchildren; a brother Vernon Hein of Lake Forest, Illinois; sister-in-law, Margaret Hein, Essex, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Ferne Lucille Herzberg was born February 7, 1919 in Omaha, Nebraska to Glen Ronk and Frances Grape. Ferne grew up in the Farragut/Riverton area attending school Kindergarten to second grade at Farragut and third grade through eighth at Riverton. She graduated from Shenandoah High School. Ferne and Raymond Lagerquist were united in marriage in 1935 and lived in Essex, Iowa. In 1942, a son Larry Lee was born to this union. On December 23, 1946, Ray died as the result of a plane crash. On November 15, 1948, Ferne and Earl Herzberg were united in marriage. Ferne, Earl and Larry made their home in Clarinda.
Ferne enjoyed cooking and baking and decorating. She especially enjoyed decorating at Christmas and received several awards for her decorations. Her granddaughters and great grandchildren were very important to her and she loved being with them. She was a long time member of St. John Lutheran Church.

N. Edwin Higgins was born July 23, 1940, in Clarinda, Iowa to Archie Raymond Higgins and Maxine Norris Higgins. Edwin passed away at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 2, 2015, after a brief illness.
Edwin graduated from Clarinda High School in 1959 where he was active in basketball, baseball, football, and swimming. He married Anna Braymen on February 18, 1959. They moved to Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1960 where Anna attended nursing school. Edwin held many different kinds of jobs before being employed by The Mirro Aluminum Company. In 1980, they moved to Owasso, Oklahoma so Edwin could attend the Spartan School of Aeronautics. Edwin graduated from Spartan and after a brief stint at NORDAM he was hired by American Airlines as a mechanic in 1983. He retired as a Crew Chief in 2003. While he was employed by American Airlines, he came up with innovative ideas to improve the company.
Edwin enjoyed bowling, fishing, watching sports and taking care of his animal companions throughout the years. He was a very avid Green Bay Packers fan. He also enjoyed telling tales of his days at American Airlines. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Edwin leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Anna, in Owasso, Oklahoma. Their daughter Jody and her husband, Chris Pionkowski and their son, Gregory of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, son Terry and his wife Leslie Higgins and their children Jessica, Laura, Jonathan and Matthew of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, daughter Amy Howard and her children Andrew Higgins and Marina Howard of Eldon, Missouri, and son Randy Higgins and Andi Wakefield of Quincy, Massachusets. Horton, William "Bill" F. - William “Bill” Horton, age 87, of Clarinda, Iowa, entered into peace Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Monday, March 9, 2015 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. A private family burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Villisca, Iowa. William F Horton was born January 29, 1928 at the home of his grandparents, Holt TWP, in Taylor County, Iowa to Felix Horton and Hazel (Kimpton) Horton. He grew up in Prescott/ Nodaway area and graduated from Nodaway High School, where he earned the Salutatorian award and the Citizenship Medal. He served his country in the United States Navy from February 1946 to February 1948. Bill was united in marriage August 26, 1950 to Dorothy Ann Taylor at the Methodist Church, Villisca, Iowa. They were blessed with two sons, William Alan and Randy Taylor.

Bill and Dorothy made their home in New Market, Iowa and in 1990 moved to Clarinda. Bill was a talented carpenter and builder of 103 new homes and remodeled kitchens and homes in the area. He was a 50 year member of the New Market Covenant Lodge #453. Bill was a proud supporter of his community; serving on the New Market City Council, New Market Fire Department, New Market School Board, Clarinda Foundation Board, Clarinda Lied Library Building Committee, the Clarinda Senior Housing Board. He also officiated high school basketball for fourteen years. Bill’s hobby following his retirement was genealogy which he really enjoyed and gave Bill and Dorothy reason to travel and meet new people. His family was his passion and loved being with his children and grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Preceding Bill in death were his parents, Felix and Hazel Horton and brother, Tom Horton.

Hoskins, Barbara Hosier - obituary in CLARINDA HERALD, Jan 11, 1893
At Rest: - Last Friday evening at her home four miles south-west of Clarinda, Mrs Barbara Hoskins departed from this life. The deceased has been ailing for several years, but last winter had a severe attack of the grip from the effects of which she never fully recovered, and this winter she took a severe cold which settled on her lungs and resulted in death. She was born the 28th of April, 1826, in Ind., her maiden name being Hosier. In 1842 in the month of April she was married to J.K. Hoskins who died Jan 9, 1870, leaving her with six children, five boys and one girl, previous to the death of the husband she had been called upon to part with six little ones. In Sep 1880 she moved to Page county from Neb to which place she had previously moved with her family from Illinois. During the past few years she has made her home with her son-in-law and daughter Mr and Mrs C.A. Heaton who have tenderly cared for her in her declining years. The funeral services were held at the home last Sunday at eleven o'clock, conducted by Rev E.W. McDade. The five boys were all present and they with the son-in-law served as pall bearers and tenderly carried to their last resting place the remains of the loved one who had endeared her life to them by the thousands of little acts of kindness which come in the course of the life of a mother. Two of the sons live in Clarinda, one in Neb., one in Pacific Junction and one in Creston. 

Kesterson, Betty Jane Herron - Betty Jane (Herron) Kesterson passed away April 5, 2015, at The Hospice With Heart house, Glenwood, Iowa, after a short bout with a “too late” diagnosis of cancer. She was 89 years, three months, and five days.

Betty was born January 8, 1926, to Jesse and Mabel (Sauceman) Herron in Atchison County, Missouri. She received her education at Shilo Country School and graduated from Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, in 1943.

On July 6, 1944, she was united in marriage to Emil (Bud) Kesterson in Topeka, Kansas. To this union, one son, Randall, was born. On July 6, 2014, they celebrated seventy years together at their son, Randall’s, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Betty was employed at Henry Field’s, Brannen’s Grocery, Shenandoah City Hall and then by Mount Arbor Nursery as a payroll clerk for 35 years.

Betty was an avid bowler and carried a high average for years. She loved spending time with her relatives and visiting her son, Randall, in Pittsburgh. As a hobby, she crocheted many potholders and embroidered dishtowels that she gave to relatives and friends here and in Pittsburgh. She also loved going dancing with Bud.

Betty would like to thank “special friend,” Mike Irvin, for the many visits to the doctors.

Besides her parents, Betty was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Herron, Donald Herron and W.H. Herron; and sisters, Marietta Watkins and Elizabeth Wintjen. Survivors include husband, Bud, Shenandoah; son, Randall, Pittsburgh; sister, Jessie Knierim, Rock Port; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M., Saturday, April 11, 2015, Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
Interment: Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah.

Sam Hoskins received news Saturday of the death of his siter, Mrs Arthur (Doll Hoskins) Loof, 83, at Omaha early that day. She had been in ill health but was at her home when she passed away. Mrs Loof was Mrs Charles Heaton when she lived in Clarinda, wife of a local blacksmith. This makes Mr Hoskins the last survivor of six brothers and sisters.

Mayer, Phyllis Marie Rhoades - Phyllis Marie Mayer, the daughter of Edward T. and Wilda E. (Irvin) Rhoades, Jr. was born February 13, 1936 in Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed away on Sunday evening, April 12, 2015 at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 79 years, 2 month and 1 day.
Phyllis was raised on the family farm in Page County, the area she lived in her entire life. She graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1954. On August 22, 1954 she married Charles Mayer in Shenandoah, Iowa at the First Baptist Church. They were married for 61 years and were blessed with three wonderful children, Lynda, Trent and Dwight. These three are great children and filled her life with great joy.
Phyllis was a member of the Nishna Valley Christian Church where she enjoyed a wonderful church family. Phyllis was thankful for the spiritual strength this church family provided. Phyllis was also an active member in the Order of Eastern Star where she served as Grand Ruth in 1977. Phyllis volunteered time at the Shenandoah Medical Center and with Heifer Project International located in Perryville, Arkansas. She also enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participate in activities they were involved in at Shenandoah Community School. Phyllis was always there for Charles, her children and grandchildren and they could not have asked for a better help mate in the tasks of life.
Survivors include her husband Charles of Shenandoah, Iowa; her children, Lynda Mayer of Glenwood City, Wisconsin, Trent Mayer and his wife Jane of Essex, Iowa, Dwight Mayer and his wife Christie of Essex, Iowa; ten grandchildren; one great granddaughter; a brother, Dan Rhoades of Lake Zurich, Illinois; along with other relatives and many friends.
Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Nishna Valley Christian Church in Shenandoah. There will be a private burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery prior to the service. Visitation with the family present will take place on Wednesday evening, April 15, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Kirsch Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah. McKinnon, Mary Marjorie Bussard - Mary Marjorie McKinnon was born October 8, 1919 to David and Harriett (Bast) Bussard in College Springs, IA. She passed away Thursday, April 16, 2015 at the Stanton Care Center in Stanton, IA. She was 95 years old.

Mary was united in marriage on October 7,1939 to Ivan "Skimmer" McKinnon.  The couple had four children.              

Mary worked at Mount Arbor Nursery. She loved to work in her garden. She enjoyed dancing. She love her family.
                                                
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ivan, son-in-law Jim Huitt, grandsons Jeremy McKinnon and Patrick Huitt, and great grandson Michael McKinnon.

Mary is survived by her four children; Janet Huitt of Sioux Falls, SD, David McKinnon and wife Jan of Edgerton, WI, Larry McKinnon of Tarkio, MO, and Deanna Spangenberg and husband JE of Red Oak, IA.  Mary had 12 grand children and 15 great grandchildren

Mobley, Florence Mae Foster - Florence Mae Mobley, the daughter of Wesle and Aryl (Miller) Foster, was born January 1, 1913 in Fremont County, Iowa. She passed away on Wednesday morning, April 1, 2015 at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 102 years and 3 months.
Mae was raised on a farm and attended country schools, moving to Shenandoah in later years, where she graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1931. On May 29, 1933 she was married to Ralph Mobley in Clarinda, Iowa, they were married for 63 years when Ralph passed away. This union was blessed with three children, Cleta, Karen and Robert.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Shenandoah and taught Sunday school for a number of years. She was a deacon in the church for years and was active in CWF and Circle. In 1993 Mae was Mother of the Year of the church. She was a Charter Member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, worked part time for J.C. Penney and worked for Henry Fields Seed Company for 22 years. She enjoyed reading and making crafts.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband in 1996; sister Opal Foster, a brother, Boyd Foster and his wife Eva, sister, Leona Harris and her husband Spencer; a sister, Naomi Bloom and son-in-law, Galen Paul.
Survivors include her three children, Cleta McMahon and her husband Jim of Pullupe, Washington, Karen Paul of Cross Lake, Minnesota, Robert Mobley and his wife Cyndi of Wichita Falls, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Bill Bloom of Wheatland, Missouri; along with other relatives and friends.

Monroe, Katherine Hart - CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, Apr 29, 1920
Katherine Hart Monroe was born in Cherry Valley, Ohio, December 23, 1833, and passed away April 23, 1920. She was the daughter of George and Martha Hart and moved with them to Illinois when she was about thirteen years old, where she lived until she was married to Henderson Monroe March 5th, 1867.
They lived in Peoria, Ill., about five years. In 1872 she with her husband came to Page County and resided on a farm about four miles northwest of college Springs for about eighteen years. In 1890 they went to Springdale, Ark., and while there enjoyed the mild climate of the South, and as old age came on they longed for the companionship of kin folks, so they returned to Page County in 1908. They lived in Clarinda for about one year and moved to College Springs in April 1909, the following December her husband was called to his Heavenly home. She then lived with her niece Mrs Jennie Davis, until last May when owing to the failing health of Mrs Davis they were forced to give up their home, since that time she has lived with relatives, by whom she will be greatly missed. Being the last of a large family of children, she leaves no relatives nearer than nieces and nephews, among whom are Ed L. Dryden of Clarinda and Mrs Edith Tanner of Springview, Nebr., both of whom she took into her home and raised as her own children. She was an earnest Christina, being a life member of the U.P. church and at the time of her death was one of the oldest members of the College Springs Church. She loved to go to church and never missed a service except on account of sickness. I t was her delight to do something for some one and never missed an opportunity to administer to the wants of others. Many are the garments he made by hand and quilts she pieced to be given to the missionary society to be sent where it would do the most good.
A short service was held Sabbath at 1 o'clock at the home Mr Dryden, conducted by Dr W.C. Williamson of Clarinda. The body was taken to College Springs, where her funeral was held at the United Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev N.J. Calhoun, and followed by a large concourse of friends her remains were laid away in her last resting place in the College Springs cemetery. 

Nothwehr, Leona Helena Eliza Herzberg - Leona Nothwehr, age 104, of Clarinda, Iowa, entered into peace Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Westridge Care & Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Clarinda, Iowa with Pastor Nathan Dudley officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 5:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2015 at Ritchie Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Summit Cemetery, rural Yorktown, Iowa.

Leona Helena Eliza Nothwehr was born June 26, 1910 to Albert Herzberg and Ida (Sunderman) Herzberg. She was the third oldest of twenty children. Leona was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Clarinda, Iowa. She also attended Immanuel Lutheran School. On February 4, 1931, Leona and Clarence Nothwehr were united in marriage at Immanuel Lutheran Church. They were blessed with six children.

Clarence and Leona farmed one and half miles north of Yorktown. Leona was a dedicated wife and mother helping with the farm and raising her family. She was a gifted quilter, making hundreds of quilts for family and friends. She enjoyed sewing and gardening especially working in her flower gardens and sharing her talents with others. Clarence and Leona were active members of St. Paul Lutheran Church faithfully serving their Lord in many ways.

Ritchey, Barbara Ella Lyvers - Barbara Ella Ritchey was born November 11, 1932 near Riverton, Iowa, the daughter of Everette Wildhawn and Nina Kathleen (Carmen) Lyvers. She passed away on Friday, April 10, 2015 at the Briarwood Care Center in Iowa City, Iowa at the age of 82 years and 5 months.
Barbara grew up on the family farm in Fremont County. She attended school in Farragut and graduated from Farragut High School. On July 17, 1950 she was united in marriage to Howard D. Graham. This union was blessed with four children, Mary, David, Rod and Maggie. They were divorced in 1964. In 1970, Barbara was married to Robert Ritchey.
She worked for Voi-Shan as a machinist making nuts and bolts for airplanes, retiring after 35 years of work. She later worked for Super Wash in Shenandoah and K-Mart & CVS Pharmacy in Iowa City. Barbara learned how to cook, can and make jelly growing up at home. She enjoyed being outside camping, fishing and gardening. She also enjoyed bowling, sewing, embroidery, word searches and reading a good book. Her true love was her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Wanda Kathleen Jones; a brother, John Henry Lyvers; a daughter, Mary Louise Graham and a great grandson, Bryan Cody Buick.

Rodriguez, Roberta Joan "Bobbie" - Roberta Joan "Bobbie" Rodriguez, daughter of French Harry "Toby" and Maymie Ardella (Shehan) Lewis, was born on September 11, 1942 in Omaha, Nebraska. She passed away on Monday, March 2, 2015 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha at the age of 72 years, 5 months, 19 days.

Bobbie and her family moved from Omaha to Bedford, Iowa, at the age of two. She attended the Bedford Community Schools, graduating from Bedford High School with the Class of 1961. After graduating from Bedford, Bobbie moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where she met her husband, William G. Rodriguez. They were united in marriage on November 5, 1961 in Red Oak, Iowa. To this union, three children, Karen, Sandra and Terry were born. They resided in Red Oak, following their marriage. Bobbie also lived on a farm outside of Essex, Iowa before moving back to Shenandoah, where she lived until her passing.

Through the years, Bobbie worked in many of the nurseries in the Shenandoah area. Lake Nursery was her last place of employment, working there for 20 years, off and on. Bobbie enjoyed being an assistant Girl Scout Troop Leader in Shenandoah.

A very family oriented person, her family was her life til her very last day. Bobbie was a very loving and caring person who loved spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, as well as several adopted grandchildren. Bobbie had a very large heart with a lot of love for everyone. She would drop whatever she was doing to help her family at any time, day or night. She also enjoyed working on cars and fishing as well as camping at Pioneer Park. Always an entertainer, Bobbie knew how to make people laugh. A fan of Soaps, she loved "One Life To Live", "General Hospital" and "The Young And The Restless".

Preceding her in death were her parents; father of her three children, William Rodriguez; granddaughters, Tabitha and Shyla Rodriguez; sister, Nancy Terrones; and brother, John Lewis. Survivors include her three children, Karen Rodriguez and Jack Williams of Shenandoah, Sandra Adams of Panama City, FL, and Terry Rodriguez and his wife Julie of Shenandoah; three granddaughters, Amber Rodriguez and husband John of Panama City, FL; Nina Embree and husband Travis of Emerson, IA, Serita Rodriguez and husband Nathan Swaink of Shenandoah, IA; 10 great grandchildren, Frankie, Christopher, Tristen, Seth, Peyton, Jackson, Maygen, Olivia, Jessi and Reese; sister, Linda Gonzales of Shenandoah; three nieces, Sherry Shaw and husband John of Essex, IA, Christine Deardorff of Essex, and Candice Engstrand and husband Randy of Braddyville, IA; nephew, Adam Gonzales of Shenandoah; along with many other relatives and friends.

Bobbie was an amazing woman. She was a good mom and wonderful grandmother, whose heart was full of love for her children and grand babies, as well as the rest of her family. She was very proud of her children and all of her grandchildren. Bobbie was a very helpful loving person, she would do anything for her family and not complain. She always made sure that everyone was taken care of before herself, she was the most selfless person you would meet. She was always a peacemaker and saw the silver lining at the end of the tunnel, even if the tunnel was LONG! Her love for her family was amazing and unconditional. All she wanted in her life was her family to be happy, healthy and loving to one another

Rogers, Maurice Allen - Maurice Allen Rogers, son of Willis Lloyd and Hazel L. (Griffith) Rogers, was born on November 21, 1933 in Nevada, Missouri. He passed away on Tuesday morning, March 3, 2015 at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age of 81 years, 3 months, 10 days.

His early years were spent growing up in Nevada where he attended school through the sixth grade until moving to Shenandoah, Iowa with his family. Maurice received his education in the Shenandoah Community Schools, graduating from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1951. Following graduation from high school, Maurice received his degree from the University of Missouri in 1955.

Moving back to Shenandoah, Maurice taught Algebra and American History at Shenandoah High School for a couple of years. He then worked at Jay Drug and then for Leacox Drug before becoming part-owner of Hamm-Rogers Appliance Store. He sold appliances for 15 years before becoming an at-home physical therapist for a number of people in the Shenandoah area. He completely retired in 2005

On March 17, 1984, Maurice was united in marriage to Betty Charlene Braymen at Glen Sheirbon's home in Shenandoah by Rev. Ed Cox.

In his spare time, Maurice enjoyed hunting and photography. He attended the KODAK School of Photography in Rochester, New York, where he refined his photography skills. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and pets. He was very fond of his dogs and cats.

Preceding Maurice in death were his parents and brother, Lloyd Rogers. Survivors include his wife of over 30 years, Betty Rogers of the home; children, Mike Rogers and wife Joyce of Kansas City, MO, Dennis Rogers and wife Mary Ann of Shenandoah, Curtis Rogers and wife Lisa of Viroqua, WI, Darla Davis and husband Kelly of Clarinda, IA, and raised as a son, Dustin Baker of Shenandoah; 16 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two sisters, Martha Hansen of Atlantic, IA and Helen Hunt and husband Harry of Cathedral City, CA; brother, Don Rogers of Shenandoah; other relatives and many friends

Roop, John Wayne - John Wayne Roop was born December 19, 1946 in Maryville, Missouri the son of Henry Thomas and Genevieve (Colbert) Roop. He passed away on Monday evening, March 23, 2015 at his home in Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 4 days.
John grew and attended school in Fairfax and graduated from Fairfax High School in 1965. Following high school he served his country in the US Air Force during the Vietnam era. Following his service in the Air Force, John worked as an electrical engineer for Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah for 30 years. On April 27, 1997 he was united in marriage to Donna Naico in Tarkio, Missouri.
John was a proud member of the American Legion. John was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed everything from hunting, fishing and trapping to feeding the birds. He was a great family man who loved his children and grandchildren greatly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; and infant grandson; infant sister and a brother, Kenneth Roop.

Ross, Barbara Ann Beedle - Barbara Ross, age 79, of Clarinda, Iowa, entered into peace Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Nebraska Medicine, Omaha, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with reverend Tim Maxa officiating. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Barbara Ann Ross was born February 29, 1936 (leap year) to Leonard Ross Beedle and Vera Lylith (Snell) Beedle at Thurman, Iowa. She attended grade school through 6th grade at Brightside country school near Thurman, Iowa. After Brightside closed she attended Thurman school for two years until her parents moved to Blanchard, Iowa. Barbara graduated from Blanchard High School in 1953. She then attended Commercial Extension Business School in Omaha, Nebraska for a short time. She then worked various office jobs.

Barbara met Paul Ross when she got off a bus from Omaha in Braddyville on her way home to see her parents. Barbara and Paul were united in marriage on November 30, 1957 in Clarinda, Iowa. She and Paul lived in Wichita, Kansas, Jacksonville, Florida, Omaha, Nebraska before retiring to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1987. They moved to Clarinda in the spring of 1995.

After her marriage to Paul, Barb was a homemaker and liked to garden and sew. She made several cross-stitch quilts and made clothes for herself, her mother and Paul’s mother. Barb grew African Violets and belonged to the Violet Club in Omaha. She sheltered and cared for dozens of cats over the years. Barb and Paul provided funding to build an extension to the Southwest Iowa Humane Society building to hold lost and stray cats.

Preceding Barb in death were her parents and husband, Paul Ross.

Schrier, Mary Rosalind Kleitsch- Mary Rosalind Kleitsch Schrier was born May 17, 1958 at Nevada, Iowa to John Calvin and Ruby M. (Rhoads) Kleitsch. She graduated George Washington High School, Cedar Rapids, in 1976. Mary furthered her education studying at Ellsworth and Kirkwood Community Colleges receiving an associates degree.
Mary has two daughters, Nicole and Rachel, with William Schrier.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clarinda, the Y Women Club of Clarinda, and was a Red Cross blood donor with 116 units lifetime donations. She also volunteered for the Red Cross Council Bluffs office and received certification from the Red Cross Disaster Relief Assistance helping those facing natural disasters. She was a volunteer at the Clarinda Lied Library in the Friends of the Library program and participated in the local community theater programs. Mary was a very generous person with her time and talents.
Mary passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Shenandoah Medical Center, Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age of 56. She is survived by her daughters, Nicole of Clarksville, TN and Rachel of Shenandoah, IA; parents John and Ruby Kleitsch of Story City, IA; siblings Deanna (Chris) Eckert of Michigan, Susan Houseman of North Carolina, Randall (Nancy) Kleitsch of Wisconsin, Carol Kleitsch-Santos of Iowa, and Dennis Kleitsch of Iowa; a very close friend Jan Clark of Clarinda; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and grand nephews.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, March 2, 2015 at First Baptist Church in Clarinda with Pastor Mitch Grossoehme officiating. Interment was at Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, IA. Shipley, Helen Teresa Lisse - Helen Teresa Shipley, 93 of Clarinda, Iowa passed away peacefully April 7, 2015 at Westridge Quality Care.
Helen was born to Croation immigrants, Victoria and Charles Lisse, in New York City on July 29, 1921. She was the first of four children followed by siblings Pauline, John and Mary. Helen attended parochial school then graduated from Julia Richmond High School. After high school she worked in Best and Co. department store until meeting a young sailor from Iowa.
Helen and Gerald were married March 24, 1946 in NYC. Soon the war bride was on a train destined for Nodaway, Iowa to a farm in the country. After living near Nodaway, Kent, and Carbon, they settled in Villisca in 1954. They were blessed with five children: Bob (Linda) Shipley of Anchorage Alaska, Jean Shipley of San Jose, California, Cathy (Steve) Smith of Carlisle, Iowa, Paula (Ed) Almaas of Stockton, California and Ann (Skip) Davison, New Market, Iowa. Helen was the proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Helen worked various jobs throughout her life with the last being at Villisca Community Schools as a library assistant. She was an active member of St Joseph Catholic Church, Villisca Interchurch Council, American Red Cross, and VFW auxiliary. Among her favorite hobbies were reading, cooking, visiting with friends and spending time with her family. She loved to travel and had the opportunity to visit Croatia on two occasions where she had the pleasure of meeting numerous cousins.
After the death of her husband, Helen moved to Kansas City near her daughter Ann and family in 1997. In 2005 she returned to Iowa to Clarinda and lived at Clar Haven until the last 2 years when she moved to Westridge.
Helen was steadfast in her Faith and belief in God, demonstrating courage and grace necessary to undertake difficult times in her life. She did this with humility, grace and dignity. A friend to many of all ages, there was no better place to meet than her kitchen table to eat her tea rings, cinnamon rolls and to share a laugh or even cry. She always had a listening ear and comforted many. Helen radiated a positive attitude, with humor and a sharp wit.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, and grandson Ryan. Left to cherish her memory are her five children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of many friends.
Visitation will be Friday April 10, 2015 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca. Mass of Christian burial is at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Villisca, Iowa at 10:00am on Saturday April 11, 2015. Interment will be at the Villisca Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the Villisca Community Center for friends and family

Tompkins, Michael Steven - Funeral Services for Michael Steven Tompkins, age 65, of Clearmont, Missouri, who passed away March 12, 2015 in Chamberlain, South Dakota will be Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at The Ritchie Funeral Home in Clarinda, Iowa at 10 AM.

Michael Steven Tompkins was born, December 17, 1949, the son of James Tompkins… and Peggy (Nichols) Tompkins. Mike grew up in the College Springs area and graduated from South Page High School in 1968. He farmed with his father in his younger years and often regaled family with stories of families and farms that he either ground feed on or worked the fields. In 1972 Mike married Naomi Derry and 2 days later he started work for Morton Buildings in Clarinda. He remained employed at Morton’s for the next 28 years. He enjoyed the challenges and his crew was consecutively in the top 10 of the company. His bonus included multiple yearly trips that he and Naomi enjoyed and looked forward too.

In 1974 Mike and Naomi relocated to Newhall, Iowa so that she could attend college for her nursing degree in Cedar Rapids. In 1998 Mike purchased his first Volvo semi tractor. For the first 2 years he drove nationwide, teaming with his daughter, Erica for West Side Transport in Cedar Rapids then later continuing to drive solo. Mike worked for Unigroup/United Van Lines for the past 10 years, first as a nationwide driver and then with a dedicated route, which he enjoyed most because he could be home part of the week. In 2008 Mike and Naomi relocated from Newhall, Iowa to Clearmont, Missouri where they purchased a farm.

Mike loved his family as well as his many friends. While driving long distances he would often be on the phone for hours. Mike was a giving husband, father, grandfather and friend who would help anyone out when needed. He was a good sounding board as well as very handy with suggestions. Although away from the farm, for years before returning to the Clearmont area, he was always a farmer at heart and that was reflected in the “equipment” that he kept. He looked forward to retirement when he would be able to completely focus on farming.

Mike is preceded in death by his father, James Tompkins as well as his grandparents. He is survived by his loving wife, Naomi as well as daughters, Erica (Jim) Young of Bonner Springs, Kansas, Sarah (Paul) Jarrett of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and son James (Whitney Stoddard) of Clearmont, Missouri. Mike was proud of his grandchildren including grandsons Jackson and Charles Young and his granddaughter Hope Ann Cavin. He is also survived by his mother Peggy Nichols of Tucson, Arizona, sisters Susan (Rick) Reilly of Phoenix, Arizona and Jane (Mike) Lungren of Fairway, Kansas, and mother-in-law and father-in-law Helen and Dean Derry of Clarinda, Iowa

Tudor, Jack Lee - Jack Lee Tudor was born December 3, 1931 in Percival, Iowa, the son of Willard Lee and Thay (Sell) Tudor. He passed away suddenly on Friday evening, March 6, 2015 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 3 days.
Jack grew up in the Essex area and graduated from Essex High School in 1949. Following high school he served his country in the United States Marine Corps. After his discharge, he returned home to the Essex area where he farmed and helped his mother after his father’s death. On November 23, 1952, Jack was united in marriage to Gwendolyn LaVonne Johnson at the Hawthorne Methodist Church. This union was blessed with three daughters, Cindy, Kim and Christie.
After their marriage, Jack and LaVonne moved to Red Oak for a few years and in 1962 they moved back to the family farm near Essex and lived there until they moved into Essex a few years ago. Jack farmed most of his life. He also worked with RAT Construction with Bill Royer and Bob Anderson. Jack was a proud member of the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping, playing golf and in his younger years participating in the tractor pulls. He also enjoyed camping, boating and water skiing. His true love was his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife LaVonne.
Survivors include his children, Cindy Hall and her husband Michael of Thornton, Colorado, Kim Tudor of Brighton, Colorado, Christie Sorensen and her husband Gordon of Kimberly, Idaho; six grandchildren, Dylan Goudie and his wife Sarah of Parachute, Colorado, Carly Ertle and her husband Austin of Thornton, Colorado, Cara Hall of Thornton, Colorado, Tonya Dierking of Omaha, Nebraska, Tamara Dierking of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Clint Dierking of Brighton, Colorado; two great grandchildren, Cora Goudie and Emmerson Ertle; his twin sister, Joyce Sederburg and her husband Darwin of Estero, Florida and Holden, Missouri; along with many other relatives and friends

Tyner, Mildred Louise Danner - Mildred Louise Tyner was born January 21, 1924 to Altis Chester and Effa Lena (Clancy) Danner in Shenandoah, Iowa. Mildred passed away March 18, 2015 at the Gardenview Care Center, Shenandoah, Iowa.

Mildred attended school in Shenandoah and a few years of grade school in Kansas City before returning to Shenandoah and graduating with the class of 1943.

Mildred married Alvin Tyner on May 31, 1947, in Shenandoah, Iowa where they made their home. To this union two children were born, Thomas Alvin and Vicky Sue. Mildred and Alvin were married 63 years.

Mildred loved playing bridge and was in many bridge clubs over the years. She was a member of Antique Study Club, American Legion Auxiliary and Elks Ladies Bridge.

She loved spending winters in Arizona were she could bask in her beloved sun. Many of her favorite memories were of the Tyner brothers' annual vacations where she got to spend time with her sisters-in-laws. Mildred spent each day reading every page of the Omaha World Herald. At Christmastime she loved making her famous fudge and giving it to neighbors and friends.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alvin in 2010 and son Tommy in 1985.

Mildred is survived by daughter Vicky Sue and son-in-law Michael Briggs, sister-in-law Marilyn Tyner of Seal Beach and many nieces and nephews

Wallace, George A. - George A. Wallace, 88, 500 East Garfield Street, died Friday from pneumonia. Services were Sunday at the Walker Funeral Home with the Rev Ivan Rogers of the Open Bible Church in charge.
Mr Wallace had observed his 88th birthday Thursday. He was born at Atlantic, but lived in Clarinda most of his life. He is survived by four children, including Charles A. (Lonnie) Wallace and Mrs Myrtle Kelley, Clarinda, Cecil Wallace, Des Moines, and Mrs Frances Young, Council Bluffs, Charles Wallace, Elmo, is a brother.
Casketbearers for the Sunday service were Ernest Wallace, Danny Wallace, Roy Graham, Paul Gorrell, Clifford Davison and ted Miller.

Windhorst, Mary Louise Riske

Mrs Mary Louise Riske-Windhorst was born March 25th, 1853, at New Melle, St Charles county, Missouri, the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Henry Riske. In her early infancy she was baptized in the Name of the Triune God. Her days of youth were spent attending school and helping the parents. After a thorough instruction in the chief doctrines of the Bible she was confirmed in the Lutheran church at New Melle by the Rev V. Matuschka March 25, 1869.
Her promise to God and His Church she faithfully kept to the very last. Severe trials came upon her early in life. As she was only 12 years of age her mother passed away, leaving her in main charge of the household duties. She thus assisted the father and family for several years.
On February 16, 1871, she was united in marriage to Fredrich William Windhorst of New Melle, by the Rev Maluschka. This union was bless with fifteen children, three of them dying in infancy, and William at the age of 39 years, Dec 4th, 1926. The first five years of their married life were spent in St Louis, Mo. Then in 1876, just sixty years ago, they came to Iowa, coming directly to Page county, settling on a farm near Clarinda. Here she shared with her husband the joys and sorrows of pioneer life. Her sixty years in Page county, Iowa, were abundantly blessed in various ways.
Before the infirmatives of old age came upon her, she enjoyed many years of health and strength, for which she was very thankful. She was not only in possession of a Bible, prayer book, and hymnbook, but made diligent daily use of them in her home. In her faithful church attendance and presence at the Lord's table, she proved her firm faith in Jesus. Whenever her eat in church was vacant, her pastor knew that she was sick, unable to come. What a fine example to follow!
In the year 1912 she, with her husband, retired from active farm life and moved to Clarinda and at once joined the St Johns' Lutheran church. The severest shock of her life came when, on May 8th, 1916, her beloved husband died rather suddenly. Her life always seemed somewhat lonely to her after his departure but she rejoined to know that her Savior was with her and would finally lead her, when the time came, to her eternal home in heaven. Her last hour came last Monday morning at 7:30 when she peacefully fell asleep, after having called on Jesus to take her home. She had reached the advanced age of 82 years, 11 months and 28 days.
Grandmother Windhorst, as she was known to a large circle of friends and neighbors, is being survived by the following children: August Windhorst, Fairfax, Mo., Mrs Joseph Shum, Clarinda, Mrs M.W. Guyton, St Louis, Mo., Daniel Windhorst, North Platte, Nebr., Mrs Homer Kelley, Kimberly, Idaho, Mrs Verdie Schantz, Villisca, Iowa, Henry Windhorst, Hardy, Nebr., Mrs William Werner, Twin Falls, Idaho, Emil Windhorst, Yorktown, Iowa, Mrs Dan Goecker and Mrs Walter Warner of Clarinda. Besides, 40 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren mourn her loss. Also three brothers: John Riske, William and Martin Riske, besides man other relatives, friends, and neighbors deeply mourn at her departure.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon first at the residence on north 12th street, and then at the St Johns' Lutheran church at 2:00 by her pastor, the Rev T.J. Vogel. The large assembly first sang one of her favorite hymns. "Jerusalem, thou city fair and high, would God I were in thee!" The pastor had chosen for his text the words of Rev 14, 13. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth, yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them." Having lived unto the Lord, proving her faith in the redeemer in prosperity and adversity, the Lord granted her a blessed and, taking her weary soul unto Himself. The Misses Wilma Sunderman and Florence Rausch sang a duet, likewise one of her favorites: "Let me go, let me go, Lord, to me Thy presence show," with Miss Mabel Sunderman at the organ. Many beautiful flowers were heaped about the casket. The funeral was very largely attended, taxing the seating capacity of the church, and bearing testimony of the high esteem in which the departed mother was held by many in the community.
Pallbearers were the sons and sons-in-aw. The remains were laid to rest in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery, north of the city. "Here we have no continuing city, but we seek one to come", Hebr. 13.14 

Woerth, Max Lawrence - Max Lawrence Woerth was born in Columbus, Nebraska on August 29, 1935 to Leo Bernard and Lillian Pearl (Plath) Woerth. He passed away February 24, 2015 at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa. He was 79 years old.

Max lived in Columbus where he learned masonry and worked in the family business for a short time. Max also went to many dances and drove stock cars in his younger years. Max attended St. Bonaventure High School in Columbus and graduated with the class of 1953. Max attended college but on February 6, 1956 he entered the U.S. Navy and was a surveyor for the Seabee's and was honorably discharged on January 5, 1960.

Max married Patricia Lynn (Kent) Falk on August 15, 1975 in Bethesda, Iowa and lived in Shenandoah, Iowa the rest of his life. He came to Shenandoah to work construction building Eaton Corporation. He was then hired by Webber Engineering. He also worked for UBC, AMVETS and for the City of Shenandoah until his retirement in 1997. He had many construction and masonry side jobs to keep himself busy.

Max was involved with the AMVETS, The Eagles Club, Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's choir. He enjoyed fishing, bird watching, stargazing, bike riding, doing picture puzzles, gardening, and rooting for the Huskers!

Max was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Lillian Woerth; brothers Leo, Jr., Valentine and Fred; sister Lillian and granddaughter Samantha Falk.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Patricia Woerth of Shenandoah; sons Mike Falk of Omaha, NE, Brian Falk of Washington, NE, Mark Mitera and wife Angela of Red Oak; daughters Lori LePorte and husband Reggie of Shenandoah and Pamela Woerth of Florida; sister Alice Rathbun and husband Ivan of Lincoln, NE; brothers Charles Woerth and wife Stella of Lincoln, NE, John Woerth and wife Barbra of Columbus, NE and Joe Woerth of Bellevue, NE; grandchildren Tyce Watts of Red Oak, Aayla Woerth of Council Bluffs, IA, Anthony Falk of Arizona, Katelyn, Seth, Natalie Johnson of Shenandoah, Leanna LePorte of Shenandoah, Daniel, Makenzie and Elizabeth Hunt of Red Oak and Shawn Falk of Norfolk, NE; great-grandchildren Ayiana, Nahla and Trinity; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends
