Adams, Charley W. - Charley W. Adams, 69 of Clarinda, died Tuesday, Jan. 30,1996 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born May 1,1926 at Parnell, Mo., the son of Ray and Ethel Powers Adams. On Feb. 3, 1965, he married Florence Dewyre, who survives.
Adams had been a painter at Clarinda's Mental Health Institute before his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Florence, of the home; children, Terrlyn and Steve Ribbey, Clarinda; Becky and Allen Kent Elmo, Mo.; David and Michelle Adams, Clarinda; Homer and Carol Adams, Wichita, Ks.; Willie Adams, Maryville, Mo.; Jeanie Adams, Clarinda; stepdaughter, Janet and Rick Esridge, Missouri; 17 grandchildren; three great grandchildren.
Also surviving are a sister, Marjorie Branson, Independence, Mo.; step­brother, Wilbur Adams, Maryville; step­sister, Roberta Drain.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2 at the Clarinda Church of God with Rev. Eddie Fidler officiating. Burial will be in LaMar Cemetery, Elmo.

Allison, Alfred C
Alfied C. Allison Sr., 67, of Silverdale, Wa died March 13,1996 at the Harrison Memorial Hospital following an extended bout with cancer. He was born March 23, 1928 in New Market, and graduated from Clarinda High School. He had attended his 50th Class Reunion last summer.
Mr. Allison retired from the Navy in 1968, having been in the submarine division, worked at Pudget Sound Naval Shipyard for 10 years and then was employed at Johnson Controls as a diesel mechanic until his illness forced him to retire. Alfred was a member of the Lions Club, the local Saddle Club and Sheriffs Posse and a number of other organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Joy, sons Alfred II of Silverdale,Wa; Everett of Bremerton, Wa; Daniel of Silverdale daughters, Susan Perkins of Port Orchard and Mary-Jo Hoskins of Hansville, Wa. Alfred has three surviving brothers, Rex, California; Francis, Montana and JayDee, Florida; two sisters, Dorothy Harms, Bellingham, Wa and Margie Harris of Clarinda and New Market areas.

Anderson, Lucille Smith -
Lucille Anderson, 96 of Clarinda, died Monday, Feb. 19,1996 at Goldenrod Manor Care Center, Clarinda.
She was born Aug. 28, 1899 in Worth County Missouri, the daughter of Pearl and Mary Cox Smith. She came to Clarinda as a young woman and lived there the rest of her life. She married Z.W. Anderson in 1918 and he preceded her in in 1959.
Anderson had worked at Parris-Dunn, Berry Seed Co. and Clarinda Municipal Hospital. She had been a
resident of the care center for the past 11 years.
She is survived by daughter, Delma Kelley, Villisca; son, Gary Anderson, Clarinda; three grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren. Sisters are Bessie Evans, Maryville, Mo., and Thelma DeMott, Hopkins, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Bill; two brothers and five sisters.

Anderson, Patricia L. Hale
Patricia Louise Anderson, 55, died on Thursday, July 25, 1996 at her home in Red Oak.
Anderson was the daughter of Garland "Ted" and Inez (Nelson) Hale, and was born on July 25, 1941, in Clarinda.
She was raised and graduated from Clarinda High School. She married Jack Anderson on October 10, 1959, in Clarinda. They lived in Clarinda after their marriage for a number of years, then moving to Harlan, where they lived for seven years. The Anderson's lived in Red Oak for the last 20 years. She was preceded in death by her mother.
Patricia is survived by her husband, a son, Rodney Anderson and his wife, Tracey, Red Oak; a daughter, LeAnna Berringer and her husband, Gene, Shenandoah; her father, Clarinda; three brothers, Norman Nelson, California, Charles Nelson, Albuquerque, NM; and Robert Hale, Red Oak; and a sister, Beverly Rosa, California.
Funeral services were Monday, July 29, 1996, at 10 a.m., at the Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in Red Oak. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery, with the Rev. John Hostettler officiating.

Annan, Martha Hilma Henning - Martha H. Annan, 84, Clarinda, died Sunday night, July 28, at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital.
She was born July 10, 1912, near Blanchard, the daughter of William and Hannah Walkinshaw Henning. At an early age, she moved with her parents to a farm near Hopkins, MO, where she attended school.
On January 28, 1937, she married John F. Annan who preceded her in death on December 7, 1990. After their marriage, they moved to Howe, NE, where they lived for two years. The Annan's then moved to a farm near Coin, before retiring to Clarinda in 1984. Mrs. Annan worked for the Coin school lunch program and at the Coin Congregate meal site.
She is survived by three children, Gary Annan and wife, Alice, Coin; Joyce Bateman and husband, Bob, Bettendorf; and Lois Blume and husband, Gary, Clarinda. There are seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Annan is also survived by a brother, Donald Henning, Aberdeen, WA; and sisters, Helen Hensley, Bedford; and Ruth Herriott, Pasadena, CA.
She was preceded in death by parents, husband, brothers, John Henning and Harold Henning.
Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon, July 31, at the Coin United Methodist Church with Rev. Gerald Allsup officiating. Burial was in Polsley Cemetery near Yorktown.

Apple, Violet L. Pence
Violet L. Apple, 101, of Braddyville died May 8, 1996 at Community Care of Clarinda where she had been a resident for several years.
She was born April 12, 1895 near Braddyville, in Missouri, the daughter of John Francis and Savannah Holbrook Pence. She graduated from Clarinda High School in 1914 and attended Northwest Missouri State Teacher's College in Maryville. She taught in the rural schools and high school at Braddyville before her marriage to Claude Apple on June 30, 1917. She was city treasurer for the town of Braddyville and she and her husband operated a tax and bookkeeping service.
She is survived by cousins. Her husband preceded her in death in 1976.

Archer, Robert Dean
Robert Dean Archer, 58, of Villisca, IA, died Saturday, June 1, 1996 at the Villisca Good Samaritan Care Center, where he had been a resident since April 12,1996.
Dean was the son of Ralph and Freda Clark Archer. He was born January 5, 1938 in Villisca. He was united in marriage to Cleta Joy Carlson on June 25, 1958 in Phoenix, AZ. Dean farmed and also owned and operated Archer Recreation at one time.
He is survived by his wife, Cleta; daughters Mrs. Richard (Carol) Balgemann of Parker, CO and Mrs. Kenneth (Vicki) Wagoner of Clarinda; son David Archer of Villisca and three grandchildren.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, one son Jerry, his brother Dale and sister Elizabeth, a niece and grand niece.

Bruce Eddie Beery, age 63, of Hermitage, MO, passed away Sunday, May 19, 1996, at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar, MO.
Mr. Beery was born at Clarinda, the son of Earl and Mildred Hughes Beery. He had been a resident of Big Springs Nursing Home in Humansville, MO, since 1991.
Graveside services were held 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, at Nemo Cemetery. Rev. Ernest Foltz officiated, under the direction of Hathaway-Peterman Funeral Home in Wheatland, MO.

Billings, Preston
Preston Billings, 91, of Clarinda died Sunday afternoon, May 12, after being stricken at his home.
He was born May 8, 1905, at Albia, IA, the son of George and Fern Miller Billings. He was married to Ruth Heller on Oct. 2, 1927. Mr. Billings worked at Rath Packing Co, and farmed after moving to this area. He had also been manager at the Clarinda airport.
Survivors include his wife Ruth of the home and three children: Donald and Anne Pearl Billings, Gladstone,
MO, Lois Fletcher, Clarinda, and Keith and Judith Billings, Cedar Falls. There are 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Virginia Reins of California is a sister and brothers are Ivan, Melvin and John Billings all of Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Blessing, Willard E. - Willard Blessing, 83 of Clarinda, died Monday, Feb. 19,1996 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital where he had been admitted earlier that day.
He was born Dec. 19, 1912 in Page County, the son of Fred and Wilma Ellis Blessing. On July 25,1935, he married Rosie Murphy, who preceded him death Nov. 20,1986. On Aug. 13, 1988, he married Delna McClarnon, who survives.              
Blessing was a lifelong fanner living south of Shambaugh until moving to Regency Retirement Center three years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Delna, of the home; daughters, Betty and James Geer, Red Oak; Beverly and Don Hunter, Charter Oak; Geraldine and Dale Jamison, Tuscon, Az.; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Also surviving are brother, John Blessing, Beverton, Or.; and sister, Ruth Gibson, Winterset.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and first wife, Rosie.

Bownes, John "Cleo" -
John "Cleo" Bownes, 82 of Clarinda, died Feb. 17,1996, at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home, Bedford, with Rev. Ward Campbell and Rev. Steve Joiner officiating. Burial was in the Athelstan Cemetery.
Bownes was born April 9, 1913, in Worth County, Missouri to Fred and Susie Bownes.
On Feb. 15,1933, he married Reva Iola Smith, Grant City, Mo., and they lived most of their 63 year of married life in the rural areas near Athelstan. They farmed in Taylor County until 1971 when they moved to Clarinda, where he was employed as a mechanic and parts man at Earl Schenck Implement Company for about 15 years.
He was an active member in the Holiness Church, Athelstan, and the Free Methodist and Nazarene Churches, Clarinda.
Survivors include his wife Reva, of the home; son, Ronald and Kathy Bownes, Maryville, Mo.; daughter, Cleta J. Bownes, Clarinda; four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Carlson, Henrietta Emma
Funeral services for Henrietta Emma Carlson, 79, Clarinda, will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the Bethesda Lutheran Church. The Rev. Anita Strommen will officiate and interment will be in the Bethesda Lutheran Cemetery. A memorial to the church is being established. There will be open visitation at the Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah.
Carlson, daughter of Lawrence A. and Ruth (Hammargren) Carlson, was born August 6, 1916 in Page County near Hepburn, and died July 13, 1996, at her home southwest of Bethesda. She grew up in rural Page County and received her education in the county schools. She worked as a nurse at the Red Oak Hospital and the Shenandoah Hospital until her retirement.            
She was baptized and confirmed at the Bethesda Lutheran Church where she was a member at the time of her death.
Preceding her in death were her parents. Survivors include two sisters, Regina O'Malley; Ft. Dodge; Ruthella and her husband Robert Bersch, Kissee Mills, MO; one brother, Earl Carlson and wife Rosemary, Essex; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Chrisman, Lena Ferris Dow
Lena Dow Chrisman, 91, of Clarinda, formerly of Clearmont, MO passed away Thursday morning at Community Care of Clarinda following an extended illness. She was born Dec, 11, 1904 to Bert and Ella Mae (London) Ferris at Shellmouth, Saskatchewan, Canada.
She moved to the United States and started working as a telephone operator at Clearmont in 1926. Later she was employed by Dr. M.L. Ford of Elmo before retiring.
She is survived by her son Ivan Dow and wife Evelyn of Dubuque; Daughter Isobel Bloomfield of Clarinda; son Paul and wife Joetta of College Springs; stepdaughter Melba and husband Thelbert Kendrick of New Market; 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren; 3 step grandsons, 1 step great grandchild; sister Joyce Ferris of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; brother Gordon and wife Pauline, Bowsman, Manitoba, Canada; and sister Lois and husband George Wilson, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia, Canada.
She was preceded in death by two infant sons and one infant daughter, parents, and husbands Sanford W. Dow and Oliver Chrisman.

Culver, John L.
After a long illness, John L. Culver, 77, of New Market, IA died Saturday evening June 1, 1996 at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.
He was born August 13, 1918 at Clearmont, MO, the son of Jacob Wakefield and Edna Gladys Davison Culver. On December 18, 1937 he married Beulah Alice Teeters.
Mr. Culver was a veteran of WW II, serving in the Army from 1943-45. He retired from Nebraska Public Power District, Bellevue, NE, where he had worked from 1951 until 1980.
Mr. Culver is survived by his wife Beulah, of the home in New Market, and three children: , Ernest Dale Culver and wife,  Maurine, of Phoenix, AZ; Beverly Butts, Edmond, OK; and Michael Ray Culver and wife, Mary Dorothy, of Fremont, NE. There are 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. His brothers are Elbert Culver of Clarinda and William Elmer Culver of Southerland, NE. His sister is Shirley Marie Hill of Edmond, OK.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 grandchild, brothers Ernest Everett Culver and J. W. (Jake) Culver and sister Mary Margaret Reece.

Mrs. Jean Dalbey, 75, of rural Clarinda, died Sunday morning, May 26, 1996 at Muncipal Hospital, where she had been admitted on Friday.
She was born December 8, 1920 in Clarinda, the daughter of Ross S. and Pauline Brown Cuttell. She graduated from high school and junior college. On June 25, 1942 she was married to George Dalbey.
The couple farmed in the Valley Township, where Mrs. Dalbey was active in the farm operation. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Dalbey is survived by her husband, George, and one son, Dennis Dalbey and wife, Janice, of Clarinda.
Cousins are Dallas Turner, Walnut Creek, CA; Freda M. Parker, Berkeley, CA; Jack Cuttell, Venice, CA; Dee Cuttell, West Lafayette, IN; Marjorie Porterfield, Gilbert, SC; Carmalita Jillson, Clarinda; and Judy Blume, Mars Hill, NC.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 29th, at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, with Rev. John Clark and Rev. Roy Fox officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda cemetery.

Evans, Deloris Cooper Cade
Deloris E. Evans, 65, of Grand Island, NE died Thursday, June 13, 1996, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Mrs. Evans was born on Jan. 4, 1931, in Clarinda, IA to Milton and Dorothy (Guenther) Cooper. She married Walter L. "Roy" Evans on July 13, 1951 in Clarinda. The couple lived in Clarinda, where she
worked for the State of Iowa at the Mental Health Institute. They moved to Grand Island in 1964.
They owned and operated Roy Evans Chrysler/Plymouth for seven years. She worked for Brodkey's Jewelry, and the couple owned and operated Roy Evans Auto Sales.
She enjoyed Christmas, picnics, family gatherings and helping others.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Kelly Heupel of Grand Island; two sons, Danny Cade of Lincoln and Randy Evans of Grand Island; and five grandchildren.
Family from Clarinda are an aunt, Dorothy Oliver, and an uncle, Ralph Borden.
Services were held Saturday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Wheat officiating. Burial was in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Evans, Theron W.
Theron W. Evans, 81, of Braddyville, IA died Thursday afternoon, June 13, 1996 at Jennie Edmondson Hospital in Council Bluffs, where he had been a patient for the past three weeks.
He was born March 27, 1915 in Bedison, MO, the son of Floyd and Nellie Sweringon Evans. He married Geneva Strange Herr on April 9, 1969. Mr. Evans lived in Shenandoah and Northboro before moving to Braddyville. He had been a farmer and later a truck driver for Asgrow Seed Co.
He is survived by his wife, Geneva, of the home; son, Marvin Evans and wife, Lillian, of Clearmont, MO; Becky Engstrand and husband, Eric, of Braddyville; step-daughter Barbara Archer of Braddyville; brother, Warren Evans and wife, Emma Jean, of Burlington Jet, MO; sisters, Meredith Sherlock and Neva Nicholas of Burlington Jet., and Ruth Evans, Maryville, MO; eight grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and nine step-great grandchil­dren. Also surviving are nieces and nephews.

Fitch, Donald Armon
Donald A. Fitch, 64, of Clarinda died Saturday evening, May 4, at Municipal Hospital after a few weeks illness. He was born March 31, 1932 at Kankakee, II., the son of Armon E. and Lena Canny Fitch. The Fitch family operated a retail business in Clarinda for many years and later Don was sales representative for dry goods. He had been active in managing family land in Ringgold County.
Fitch is survived by a sister Lois Jeanne Picha of Rocky River, Oh. and a brother Joe Fitch of Omaha, Ne. there is one niece and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother James.

Griffith, David Grannis
David Grannis Griffith, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996, at his home in Overland Park, KS.
Griffith, a twin, was born June 15, 1912, in Elkader. He and his twin brother, Harold Sherman Griffith, were two of five children whose parents were Abbie Helen Grannis and Harry Llewellyn Griffith.
Griffith's father, the only child of Mary Ann Carpenter and David Golden Griffith was born in Elkader in 1872. After being married to Abbie Helen Grannis in Fayette, on January 1, 1907, they moved to Elkader, where they remained the rest of their lives. Harry Griffith published the "Elkader Register" from 1895 until his death November 29, 1937.
Interest in the family newspaper eventually led to Griffith's lifetime career in printing. Griffith attended Iowa State A and E College in Ames, for two years before transferring to the University of Iowa at Iowa City, where he graduated in 1938 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Certificate in Journalism. Shortly after graduation from the University of Iowa, he was married to Ruby Geraldine Harris, Coin, by the Presbyterian minister at Williamsburg.
Following marriage, the couple lived first in Elkader, where Griffith worked on the family newspaper. In March, 1941, they moved to Marcus, where he purchased "The Marcus News" which he published until the outbreak of World War II, in 1942. Then they moved to Wichita, KS, where Griffith found employment by the Boeing Airplane Company. After the war, Griffith worked for the McCormick-Armstrong Printing Company for 23 years.
While living in Wichita, Griffith became a member of the Albert Pike Masonic Lodge and a life member of the Scottish Rite in 1944. In August, 1967, Griffith and his family moved to their present home in Overland Park, KS.
Griffith was interested in geneology and with the discovery that he was a direct descendant of Civil War Gen. Roger Sherman, he obtained a life membership in the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Other interests included travel, music, boating and photography.
David was baptized as a child in the Cogregational Christian United Church of Christ in Elkader. He became a member of the First Methodist Church while living in Wichita, KS.
Funeral services were Saturday, July 13, at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery in Coin.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby, and one son, David Harris Griffith, Overland Park, KS. Also surviving, is a twin brother, Harold S. Griffith, Elkader, and two nieces and two nephews.

David attended IoWa State A and E College in Ames, for two years before transferring to the University of Iowa at Iowa City, where he graduated from in 1938 with a Bachelor's Degree and a Certificate in Journalism. Shortly after graduation from the University of Iowa, he was married to Ruby Geraldine Harris, Coin.
Following marriage, the couple lived first at Elkader, where Griffith worked on the family newspaper, but in March 1941, they moved to Marcus, where Griffith had purchased The Marcus News. Griffith published that newspaper until the outbreak of World War II, in 1942. Then they moved to Wichita, KS, where Griffith found employment by the Boeing Airplane Co. After the war, Griffith worked   for the
McCormick-Armstrong Printing Co. for 23 years.
While living in Wichita, Griffith became a member of the Albert Pike Masonic Lodge AF and AM, and a life member of the Scottish Rite in 1944.
In August of 1967, Griffith and his family moved to their present home in Overland Park, KS.
Griffith became .interested in genealogy, and with the discovery that he was a direct descendant from Roger Sherman. He obtained a life membership in the organizers known as Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Other interests included reading, travel, music, boating and photography.
As a child, Griffith was baptized in the Congregational Christian United Church of Christ in Elkader, but became a member of the First Methodist Church while living in Wichita.
Griffith died July 10, 1996, at the age of 84 years and 25 days. He is survived by his wife, Ruby; one son, David Harris Griffith; one sister, Mary Golden Stump, Chesterfield, MO; twin brother, Harold Griffith, Elkader; four nephews and two nieces.

Fern Hazleton Hasbrauck, Sheridan, WY, died Sunday morning, July 14, 1996. Hasbrauck was a native of Clarinda.

Henn, Philip S.
Philip Henn of Mesa, Az, formerly of Blanchard passed away in Mesa on April 22, 1996. Henn was born on Sept. 21, 1913 to Charles and Tillie Henn and was raised near Blanchard. He was a graduate of College Springs and Tarkio College (1935). Henn taught school and coached at Irish Grove, Mo. and later received his masters degree from the University of Nebraska.
In 1942 Henn entered the service and after his discharge he worked for North American Aviation and the Veterans Administration in Kansas City.
In 1946 he married Pauline Comer and they had one son, David, who preceded him in death.
Henn moved back to the Blanchard area in 1953 and lived there until moving to Mesa in 1994.
He is survived by his wife, daughter-in-law Ann, 4 grandchildren, sisters, Laura Lea Schooler, Amarillo,
Tx.; Margaret Younger, Maryville, Mo.; and Charles Henn of Blanchard.

Hoffman, Elnora Elizabeth Bush
Elnora Elizabeth (Bush) Hoffman passed away June 10, 1996 in Winchester, KY after a long illness.
Elnora was born on February 3, 1914 in Guss, Iowa. She was raised on the family farm until she was a young girl. Then the family moved to Clearfield, where she graduated from high school in 1933.
Later, she went with her parents to Blockton, IA. While there, she met Howard Holman Hoffman of
Redding, Iowa. They married on February 15, 1937 in Churdan, Iowa.
After their marriage they lived in Grinnell, IA and later moved to Grand Island, NE. They returned to
Ringgold County Iowa to farm in 1941.            
They spent the following 27 years farming in Ringgold, Taylor and Page counties, until 1968, when they moved to Newton, IA. Both Elnora and Howard worked for the Newton -Community School District.   They remained there until Howard's passing on December 26, 1991. Shortly thereafter, Elnora  moved to Lexington, KY, to be near her family.
Elnora was always active in community affairs wherever she lived. She was involved in her childrens' school lives, her church and neighborhood. She was baptized and raised in the Methodist church, and remained a faithful servant for her Lord throughout her life.
She was selected Homemaker of the Year in 1991 by the Page County Women's Farm Bureau. She received the WSCS Mission Award from the Shenandoah United Methodist Church, and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by Garden View Nursing Home in Shenandoah.
Left to cherish her memory are her five children: Cecile and her husband, Larry Cozad of LaCrescent, MN; Larry and his wife, Julie, of West Lafayette; IN; Mariann and her husband, Ken Harlan, of Lexington, KY; Carolyn and her husband, Robert Towers, of Honeoye Falls, NY; and David of Arlington, TX; 18 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and dear friends.

Hoope, Donald E.
Donald E. Hoopes, 73, of Boonville, MO, entered into glory on Wednesday at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Hoopes were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the William Wood Funeral Home in Boonville. The Reverend Jerome Wagoner officiated. Burial and Masonic Services were conducted at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Donald E. Hoopes was born June 11, 1922 in Washington, D.C., the son of Henry Arthur and Minnie Esther Nichols Hoopes. He married Mary E. Bass on September 4, 1943 at Clayton, MO.
Mr. Hoopes had lived in Boonville from 1949 to 1954, and then from 1966 until the present. He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Boonville. Mr. Hoopes was a Mason, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.  
Surviving, in addition to his wife, is one daughter, Donna Lynne Wagoner of Clarinda, IA and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Debra Kay Lowry and one brother.

Humphrey, John D. (Jack)
John D. (Jack) Humphrey, 83, of Kerrville, TX passed away May 9, 1996 after a long illness.
He was born Feb. 28, 1912 to E. Leo and Susanne Richardson Humphrey and grew up in the Clarinda area.
After serving 25 years in the Air Force he later retired from Southwest Texas State University as the local purchaser.
He is survived by children Sandra Humphrey and Gerald and wife Kay Humphrey. His brother Bill and sister Roberta Geer and 2 grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Ruby, brothers Dan and Dick and sister Jean Geer.

Johnson, Betty J.
Funeral services for Betty J. Johnson, 66, of Branson, were held at 11 a.m., Fri, Nov. 15, at Snapp's Funeral Home, Branson, with Dr. Steve House officiating. Private burial was in Ozarks Memorial Park Cemetery.
She died Nov. 12, 1996, at her home following a long illness.
Formerly of Clarinda, Mrs. Johnson had been a resident of the Branson area for the past 18 years. She was a retired registered nurse, homemaker, and a member of the United Methodist Church in Branson.

Johnson, Claire Herbert
Claire Johnson was born June 3, 1917 in Hepburn, IA. to John and Gertrude M. Johnson. He grew up on a farm with two younger brothers, Virgil and Marvin.
In 1940 he moved to southern California to work as an aircraft inspector. In 1942 he enlisted in the Air Force Cadet program and became a pilot. After serving as a combat pilot in World War II he returned to
the states to be an instructor pilot.
He married Phyllis R. Bradley in 1959 and they have two children, son Mark, Atlanta, GA and daughter Lynn, Lincoln, NE.
He retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel and then received his degree from Indiana University.
In 1969, Claire and his family moved to Aurora, CO where he lived at the time of his death on April 27,1996.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993.

Kent, Phyllis M. Glover - Phyllis M. Kent, 69, died Sunday afternoon at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital following an extended illness.
Kent was born September 15, 1926, in Griswold, to Henry Mackrill and Helen Norton Glover. She married Charles Kent, Clarinda, on July 18, 1947. Following their marriage, they farmed for ten years. The Kents then moved to California where Phyllis worked for the Board of Education in the cities of Glendale and Burbank. The family returned to Iowa and Kent worked in Red Oak at the Cancer Society for eight years. In 1992, the Kents retired and made their home in Clarinda.
She is survived by her husband, Charles; daughters, Patty Lynn Woerth and her husband, Max, Shenandoah; Cheryl Anne Kent, Smyrna, GA; Marleen Marie McGargill and her husband, Sam, Hemet, CA; Peggy Renee Weathers, Shenandoah; and Linda Jean Milledge and her husband, Robert, Clarinda; her brother Robert Mackrill, Aurora, CO; sisters, Ramona Evans, Griswold; Nadine Hoyman, Aurora, CO; nine grandchildren, one great grandson, two step grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Betty Hillhouse and Helen Mae Sims.

Lister, Vernon "Tony"
Vernon "Tony" Lister, 81 of Knoxville, died of renal failure Jan. 15,1996 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center, Des Moines. Services were Jan. 18 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Knoxville, with burial at Graceland Cemetery.
Lister was born in Page County and had lived in Knoxville since 1941. He retired after 33 years as payroll supervisor at the Veterans Medical Center, Knoxville, and was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Long, Margaret Davis
Margaret Davis Long was born April 4,1911 in Ottumwa. She died Feb. 10, 1996 at Community Care Center of Clarinda, where she had been a resident for seven years.
In her early infancy, she was adopted by Herbert and Ethel Troy Davis. She attended Davis Rural School and Clarinda High School.
In January of 1934, she married Charles Henry Long. They had five children.
Long played piano and violin, and was the pianist for her congregation a number of years.
In 1938, the couple moved to the Nevada-Ames area, where they had found employment. Her husband died in March of 1964.
After her husband's death, Long moved to Council Bluffs, working until her retirement as an LPN at Clarkson and Bergen-Mercy Hospitals, Omaha, Ne.
She is survived by her children and their families: Larry, Philadelphia, Pa.; Gary, Corpus Christi, Texas; Cheryl DeBeor, Lansing, Mi.; Bruce, Eaton Rapids, Mi.; two sisters, Frances Mae and Douglas Winter, Clarinda; Glenda Lee and Cy Rolfe, Salem, Or.; eight grandchildren, one greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; infant daughter, Sharon; infant sister, Theo Mae; brother, William E. (Bill) Davis; sister-in-law, Darlene M. Davis.

Mace, Louise "Lou" Alexander - Louise "Lou" Mace, 65 of Clarinda, died Friday, Feb. 16,1996. She
entered Community Care Center of Clarinda on Wednesday, following an extended illness.
Mace was born to Loel and Olevia (Hammett) Alexander Jan. 9,1931 in Cushing, Ok. She graduated from Wichita High School, Wichita, Ks. In 1950, she married Kenneth Mace in Texarkana, Ar.      
She and her family moved to Clarinda in 1953, where she was active in real estate and property management. She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and PEO.
She is survived by sons: Tom and Juli Mace, Clarinda; Gary and Kathy Mace, Gadsden, AL; two grandchildren; mother, Olevia Alexander, Wichita; sister, Frances Schild, Wichita; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 31, 1975; infant daughter, Kristin; and father, Loel.

Mackey, Ethel V. Arthur
Ethel V. Mackey, 85 of Clearmont, Mo, died Wednesday, Feb. 14,1996, at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, where she had lived the past four years.
She was born Nov. 3, 1901, near Siam, the daughter of Edward and Sara Jane Maxwell Arthur. On Feb. 2, 1929, she was married to Harold G. Mackey, who died May 29, 1987. They farmed in the Bedford, Hopkins and Clearmont areas before retirement to Clearmont in 1976.
Survivors include three children: Margaret and Jim Marcus, St. James, Mo.; Wilma Jean and Robert Dunlap, Cozad, Ne.; Glenn and Norma Mackey, Braddyville. There are nine grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Two sisters also survive, Nellie Arthur, Clarinda, and Velma Plowman, Sharpsburg. She was preceded in death by sisters and brothers, Marie Thompson, Nora Savage, Chrystle Savage, Pearl Pierson, Inez Bayless, Opal Crawford, Carl Arthur and Cecile Arthur.

Korey Lynn Marriott, 10, Braddyville, died Saturday, August 10, at Heartland East Hospital, St. Joseph, MO, as the result of an accident that happened that afternoon.
Marriott was born September 16, 1985 in Shenandoah. He was the son of Randy and Donna (Engstrand) Marriott and attended school at West Nodaway in Burlington Junction, MO.
Survivors include his parents, three brothers, Chris, Kyle and Kolby Marriott; grandparents, Lois Engstrand, Braddyville; Garland and Minnie Marriott, Clearmont, MO; and great grand mother, Mrs. Basil (Jeanne) Koger, Clearmont.

Mascher, Paul
Paul Mascher, 19, of Clarinda, died of injuries related to a tractor accident Monday morning, Nov. 18, at his farm. Paul was born Nov. 16, 1977, at Clarinda, Iowa to Marvin and Sherril (Sanford) Mascher.
Paul received his elementary education from the Clarinda Lutheran School and graduated in the spring of 1996 from Clarinda High School. After graduation, he worked at Dammann Sales of Essex and on his family farm north of Clarinda. His interests included fishing, hunting, the outdoors and especially his friends.
He is survived by his parents, brothers, Bill, Jeff, and Fred and sister, Marie, all of Clarinda; grandparents, Donald and Jean Mascher, Clarinda, Robert and Marian Sanford, Sauk City, WI, great-grandmother, Marjorie Ray, Clarinda, and many other relatives.
Funeral services are at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 21, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, northwest of Clarinda, with burial at the Immanuel Cemetery. The Page County Sheriff's Department reports 19-year-old Paul Kenneth Mascher was killed in a tractor rollover accident Monday, November 18, 1996.
According to Chief Deputy Mike Williams, the incident occurred at approximately 10:34 a.m. as Mascher was eastbound on county road M-70 approximately three miles north of Clarinda.
William's report indicates Mascher was on a 1967 John Deere Model 30-20 narrow front tractor "when the right rearwheel dropped off the roadway into the ditch, causing the tractor to roll over into the ditch" pinning the driver.
Williams stated that Mascher was removed from under the tractor, which did not have a rollover protective device, by members of the Clarinda Fire Department and EMS personnel. He was taken to the Clarinda Regional Health Center by EMS personnel.
Mascher was a 1996 graduate of Clarinda High School. School officials announced Monday that students needing assistance could go to the District Counselor's office, Media Center office, Learning Center or administrative offices for support, and district teachers were available in their classrooms after the school day ended.
Williams further stated that there were no apparent witnesses to the accident, which remained under investigation at press time Tuesday.

Maxwell, Florence Ryan
Florence Maxwell, 70, of Clarinda passed away Thursday morning, May 9, 1996 at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha following a brief illness.
She was born Sept., 26, 1925 at Atlanta, IL., the daughter of Arlie and Ella Owe Ryan. She married Albert (Dutch) Maxwell who preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1994. Mrs. Maxwell worked in cafes and nursing care before her retirement.
She is survived by eight children: Howard Maxwell, John Maxwell, Dorothy Maxwell, Mary Maxwell, all of Clarinda, Joe Maxwell, Hartford, SD, Ed Maxwell, Tulsa OK, Tom Maxwell, New Market, and Randy Maxwell, Hollywood, FL. There are 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and two step sister, Corrine and Maxine.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son, Eddie J. Maxwell.

McColm, Louie Grace Beery Mendenhall John
Louie Grace McColm, 82, of Bedford, died suddenly Saturday afternoon, May 11, while attending a memorial service at Siam.
She was born Dec. 15, 1913 in Page County, Iowa, the daughter of John B. and Lillie Creola Mae Thompson Beery. She was married: to Forest Leroy Mendenhall on May 30, 1931, he died Nov. 3, 1957. On March 11, 1969 she married James Everett John who preceded her in death on March 11, 1975. On Feb. 15, 1979 she married Howard D. McColm who passed away Feb. 18, 1992.
She is survived by three children: Judith Giboney and husband Ronald of Norco, CA, Sandra Johnston and husband Allen of New Virginia, IA; and Dwight Mendenhall and wife Charlotte of Raymore, MO. There are 9 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Sisters are Anna Miller of Clarinda and Julia Eberly, Ronald, WA.

McNulty, Leland
Leland McNulty, 82, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996, at the Stella Manor Nursing Center in Russellville, AR.
He was a native of Stockton, KS and was a son of the late Harry and Ethel King McNulty. He married the former Alice May Worrell in Shenandoah and worked in the trucking business in Clarinda before moving to Cheyenne,WY. While there, he worked as a bus driver in Greeley, CO and then for the Pacific Union
Railroad as a baggage handler and station master, retiring after 27 years of service.             
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lyle McNulty, and a sister, Lucille McNulty Johnson.
Survivors include his wife, Alice May McNulty, a son, Larry Eugene McNulty, Amarillo, TX; two daughters, Vadonna McNulty, Sierra Vista, AZ; and Faye Dowdy of Russell ville, AR. McPherren, John Henry
John Henry McPherren, 73 of West Des Moines, died of diabetes Feb. 5, 1995, at Woodbury West Health Center.  
Services were Feb. 7 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, Des Moines, with burial at Old Memory Cemetery, New Market.
McPherren was born in Taylor County and lived in West Des Moines most of his life. He retired as director of research and developmental Continental Western. He was also a Navy veteran of World War II.
McPherren married Peggy Ellen Corbin Feb. 2, 1945 in New Market. She preceded him in death in February 1992.
Surviving are daughter, Cheryl Van Horn, and son, Roger, both of Des Moines; brother, Paul, West Virginia; two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Morrison, Orville Oliver
Orville Oliver Morrison, 90, of Loveland, CO, died May 13,1996, at McKee Medical Center.
He was born June 25, 1905, in Prairie Grove, AR, to D. Walter Lee Morrison and Catherine Ann Bucher
Morrison.              
Mr. Morrison married Margaret L. Kent on Feb. 7, 1953, in Brush, CO.
He served in the U.S. Army 79th Infantry Division in the European Theater during World War II, and received the Purple Heart.
Mr. Morrison is survived by his wife; a son, Dennis Morrison, of Loveland; a sister, Opha Morrow and husband, Ord, of Lincoln, NE; several nieces, nephews and cousins; brother-in-law, Orville Kent and wife, Thelma, of Clarinda; and many friends.

Pearson, Harold T.
Harold T. Pearson, Red Oak, the son of Charles F. and Anna Maire (Johnson) Pearson, was born on February 23, 1912 in Fremont Township of Page County, Iowa.
He died on Monday, May 13, 1996 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 2 months and 20 days.
He was united in marriage to Vandelin E. Almquist on October 21, 1936. They farmed in the Essex community until 1964 when they moved to a farm north of Stanton, Iowa. They moved into Red Oak, Iowa in 1992. He attended the First Covenant Church and was a member of the Senior Citizens both of Red Oak, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, Ethel Royer, Signie Westenburg, Elizabeth Erickson, Esther Tabor and Thera Newman, three brothers, Walter, George and Dale Pearson and a granddaughter, Lynn Lawson.
Harold is survived by his wife, Vandelin Pearson of Red Oak, Iowa, a daughter, Shirley Lawson and her husband Charles of Dallas, Texas; two sons, Darrel Pearson and his wife Delores of Denver, Colorado
and Gerald "Jerry" Pearson and his wife Denise of Brandon, Mississippi; six grandchildren, Terry Pearson Larsen, Pamela Pearson Bussow, Jeff Pearson, James Pearson, Eric Lawson and Bobbette Lang; thirteen grandchildren; a brother, Donald Pearson of Burley, Idaho and a sister, Mrs. Ingerberg Johnson of Clarinda, Iowa. Also by other relatives and many friends.

Pearson, Norma Jean McClarnon
Norma Jean McClarnon Pearson was born near Shambaugh February 26, 1935 and died Saturday, July 20, 1996 at the Greeley Medical Center in Ames. She died few hours after being admitted. Mrs. Pearson was 61 years old.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 25, at 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City, where she was a faithful member.
The Reverend John Grebner officiated. Following services at the church the body was cremated. 
Norma Jean McClarnon graduated from Clarinda High School in 1953. She was married to Neil Pearson in Swedburg, NE on May 28, 1955. They moved to Webster City in 1966.
She is survived by her husband Neil; sons, Roger Pearson and wife, Gina, Underwood, FL and Mark Pearson and wife, Michelle, Hubbard.
She is also survived by two grandchildren, Nicholas and Brittany; mother, Laura Jarvis, Southfield Care Center, Webster City, aunts, Irene Borden, St. Joseph, MO, Berniece Moore and Delna Blessing, Clarinda; and many friends.

Mary Naomi Perdew, 65, Clarinda, died early Saturday morning at Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs.
Perdew was born February 26, 1931, in Clarinda. She was the daughter of Toddy and Effie Squires.
Mary was married to Walter J. Perdew on September 13, 198,2. They lived on E. Grant St., Clarinda.
Survivors include her husband, mother, her children, Ribbey, Des Moines; Mrs. Leslie (Karen) Larson, Blanchard; Mrs. James (Sharon) Winget, Hancock; Mrs. Rodney (Debra) Taylor, Gravity; Steve Ribbey, Clarinda; Mrs. Rick (Shirley) Foster, Clarinda, 21 grand­children, and ten great grandchil­dren, brothers and sisters, John Squires, College Springs; Violet Wilcox, Sioux City; Anna Squires, Clarinda; Arthur Squires, Shenandoah; Rosie McClarnon, Council Bluffs; Barbara Richt, Des Moines; and Kenny Squires, California.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Church of God, Clarinda, with burial taking place in

Phillips, Letha Fern, was born on June 14, 1905, in Mt. Pulaski, IL, and died August 6,1996, in Clarinda. She taught fourth grade for 24 years in the Clarinda school system.
Phillips moved with her parents from Mt. Pulaski, to Onawa High School and received a bachelors of
arts degree from Iowa State Teachers College, which is now the University of Northern Iowa. She did graduate work at the University of Wyoming and at the University of Nebraska- Omaha.
Her teaching career began in the rural schools of Monona County and Pisgah. Phillips' long-term commitment was to the Clarinda School System. She retired in 1970, and in her later years, she resided at Goldenrod Manor Care Center.
Phillips was a member of the Clarinda First Christian Church, the Clarinda Business and Professional Women's Club, and the Delta Kappa Gamma educational sorority. She was also a member of the National and Iowa State Teachers' Education Associations.
She is survived by one sister, Opal Marley, Rogers, AR; and two nieces, Linda Hirst, Palatine, IL; and Kandace Bevan, Littleton, CO.
Open visitation will be at the Walker-Merrick funeral Home, Clarinda. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, should be sent to the Clarinda Public Library Foundation.

Potts, Floyd Thomas - Floyd Thomas Potts, 81, of rural Clarinda, died Saturday, July 27, at the Community Care Center in Clarinda where he had been a patient for the past month.
He was born June 19, 1915, near Burlington Junction, MO; the son of Leeotis and Mattie Moorman Potts. He was married to Wilma Ruth Wright in 1937. Mrs. Potts died in 1954. Potts had been a carpenter and farmer.
He is survived by five sons, Keith, Clarinda; Ronald Dean, Mt. Holly, NC; Willis Ray, Cottonwood, AZ; Herman Leroy, Glenwood; and Floyd Thomas, Clarinda. There are several grandchildren and great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and three sisters-in-law, Nina Potts, Hopkins, MO; Mabel Potts, Kansas City, MO; Lucy Potts, Commence, TX.
He was preceded in death by parents, wife, four brothers and four sisters.

Dorothy A. Roberts, 91, of 2403 E. 19th, Sterling, II., died Sunday morning. She was born April 3, 1905 at New Market, la., the daughter of Eugene and Carrie Adah Werts Owen.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sterling, II.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer M. Roberts.
She is survived by one daughter, Carra Adda Drennen of Ogden, la., a sister, Carrye Smith of Clute, Tx., four grandchildren, Phillip (Julia) Mattox of Sterling, IL, Tony (Connie) Silva of Clarinda, la., Peggy Albrecht of East Dubuque, II. and Diane (Randy) Newton of Ogden, la., twelve great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

Roemmich, Shirley Jean Baggs Bennett - Shirley Jean Roemmich, 66 of Scottsbluff, Ne., died Jan. 15, 1996 in the Scottsbluff hospital.
Her funeral was Jan. 19 at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel with Rev. Calvin Leeds officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Park, Scottsbluff.
Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Polio Survivors in care of the family.              
She was born July 30, 1929 in Blanchard, the daughter of Edson R. and Gladys O. (Smith) Baggs.
She graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1947 and married Robert G. Bennett in that same year. After their divorce in 1961, she married Edward G. Roemmich Nov. 12, 1982 in Ft. Collins, Co., living in Scottsbluff.
She was employed by Beggren and Sons for 10 years as a bookkeeper, and worked 20 years for James E. Simon Co.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church since 1942. After contracting polio in 1955, she was active in the Nebraska Polio Survivors Association.
Survivors include her husband; mother, Gladys, Scottsbluff; son, Robert R. Bennett, Scottsbluff; stepchildren, Steve, Geneva, Ne.; Stan, Kearney, Ne.; Brenda Walker and Joanna Payne, both of Geneva; one grandson, and seven stepgrandchildren.

Sherwin, Ruth Pauline Whipp
Ruth Pauline Whipp Sherwin, 78, died Thursday, July 25, 1996, in Ames.
Sherwin was born on March 17, 1918, in Des Moines and was a graduate of Amity High School, class of 1936.   Following graduation from Iowa State University, she was a home economics teacher.
She is survived by her husband, Douglas, Green Valley, AZ; sister, Betty W. Duncan, Lincoln, NE; brother, Forrest, Lenox; and children, Daniel, Mankato, MN; Sally Jeffrey, Blacksburg, VA; Jane Randall, Ames; Peter, Cape Coral, FL; and Andy, Eden Prairie, MN. In addition, there are ten grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Isabelle Farquhar Whipp and a brother, Lloyd Loudon Whipp, who died in the U.S. Marine Corps, in Iwo Jima.
The Sherwin's made their home at Green Valley, AZ, following retirement.

Shore, James Burton
James Burton Shore, 69 of Clarinda died Monday night, June 17 at Municipal Hospital.
He was born August 12, 1926 in New Market, IA, the son of Lloyd and Mildred Clark Shore. He attended business college in Des Moines and was a veteran of World War II.
On August 21,1950 he married Betty Jean Clampitt who preceded him in death on April 24, 1992.           

Mr. Shore had been associated with the auto business since1946 when he worked for Savage and Crawford as a bookkeeper. In 1948, he bought interest from Jack Savage to become Shore and Crawford Motor Co. In 1961, he established Shore Motor Co. which he operated until his retirement and sold the business to his sons.
He is survived by two sons, Larry Shore and wife Pam and Kim Shore and wife Marilyn all of Clarinda. There are eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Donna Hansey of Roseville, MN is his sister. He was preceded in death by parents and wife.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, June 21, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Father Gittins officiating. Simonton, Grace Zephyr Cousins
Grace Simonton, 83, Clarinda died early Thursday Morning at the Clarinda Community Care Center
where she had been a resident since 1987.
Simonton was born September 25, 1912, in Mercer, MO. She was the daughter of Clint Henry and Minnie Ann (Miller) Cousins. Grace moved to Trenton, MO, in 1920, She came to Clarinda in 1939 to work on Ted Miller's Dairy Farm near Hawleyville. She later moved to Allerton, and Springfield, MO. She returned to Clarinda in the early 1940s and remained there.
Simonton is survived by Butch Moore, Clarinda, and was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Harry William Stimonton.
Graveside services were Saturday, August 10, 1996, at the Clarinda Cemetery, with Rev. Eddie Fidler officiating. Walker-Merrick was in charge of arrangements.

Don E. Spangler, 74, 1621 31 St., Des Moines, died on June 25, 1996 at the Kavanagh House in West Des Moines of a stroke.
Funeral services will be at 10 am. on Thursday, June 27 at the Des Grandview Park Funeral Home. The burial will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Maple Cemetery in College Springs.
Mr. Spangler was born in Elmo, MO and was a World War II Navy Air Corps veteran. He worked as a field inspector for Insurance Service of Iowa until he retired in 1983.
Mr. Spangler was a member of the Union-Auburn Masonic Lodge and was a member of the ISO 25 Year Club. He was a lifetime member of Blue Goose International and belonged to the College Springs Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Spangler is survived by his wife, Norma Spangler; two brothers, Phillip Spangler, Phoenix, AZ and Robert Spangler, Manilla, IA; one sister, Donna Horning, Payson AZ; and a sister in law, Thelma Andrews, St. Joseph, MO.

Norma A. Spangler, 73, Des Moines, and formerly of Braddyville and College Springs area, died Thursday night, July 25, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. She had been a patient at the hospital for a week before her death.
She was born September 16,1923, Braddyville, the daughter of Roland Dale and Alta Firkins Heniger. On August 26, 1946, she married Don Spangler who preceded her in death on June 25,1996. Mrs. Spangler was a registered nurse.
She is survived by one sister, Thelma Andrews and husband, Herbert, St. Joseph, MO. She was preceded in death by parents and husband.

Graveside services for Harriett M. Spann, 78 of Garden Grove, Ca. were held Saturday, April 27, at the Clarinda cemetery. Mrs. Spann died at her home in California.
She was born March 13, 1917 in Iowa, the daughter of George Isaac and Harriett Sarah Cox Guenther.
Mrs. Spann had been an accountant for a construction company before her retirement.
She is survived by a sister Ethel Guenther, Hemet, Ca. and brother Gilbert Guenther, Britt, la. Also surviving are nieces and nephews.

Spunaugle, Judie Williams - Judie Spunaugle, 51 of Clarinda, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 1996, at Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Ne., where she had been since Jan. 31.
She was born Dec. 22, 1944, at Clarinda to Calvin and Frances E. Tally Williams. On Nov. 25, 1966,
she married Merritt Spunaugle, who survives. She was an administrative assistant in the medical departmental the Clarinda Academy.             
Survivors include her husband Merritt of the home; and sons: Jon and Tracy, Villisca; Marc and Amy, Clarinda; Matthew and Tracy, Fairbanks, Ak. There is one grandson Jared. Brothers are Dennis Williams, Coin; Don Williams, Clarinda; and Steve Williams, Clarinda; and one sister, Karen Pritchett, Morton Mills. Also surviving are her father and wife, Calvin and Elnora Williams, Clarinda.

She was preceded in death by her mother Frances.

Louise Stanton, 80 of Clarinda died Monday, April 8,1996 at Community Care Center of Clarinda.

Cecil Lee Stephens, 35, Villisca, died Monday, August 5, 1996, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.
Stephens was born October 28, 1960, in Clarinda, the son of Carl E. and Lois Beavers Stephens.
He was a graduate of the Villisca High School class of 1979. He received his associates degree in Agriculture at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs.
Stephens worked at D and L in Red Oak and at Parker Hannifin Co., Red Oak. He had purchased a farm on March 5,1991, south of Villisca.
He had been active in golf and was a member of the First Christian Church in Clarinda.
Stephens is survived by his parents, Carl E. and Lois Stephens, Villisca; brothers and sisters, Marie Waldron and husband, Bill, Fort Scott, KS; Howard Stephens and wife, Janelle, Clarinda; Marc Stephens and wife, Carrie, Houston, TX; Martha Herzberg and husband, Craig, Villisca; and Mary Carlson and husband, Brian, Red Oak; 13 nieces and nephews, one great niece, and a friend, Janet Auffert. Stone, Horace J.
Horace J. Stone, 98, of Shambaugh, la., died Friday morning, April 26, at Veterans Hospital in Omaha after a brief illness.
He was born September 14, 1897 at Dexter, Mo., the son of John and Alice Johnson Stone. On July 29, 1923 he married Thelma Wolf who preceded him in death October 23, 1987. Mr. Stone was a farmer and mechanic. He had worked at Opitz Motor Co., Lisle Motor Co. and for Clem Fine Implements.
Mr. Stone is survived by two children: LaDonna Potts, Bedford, la. and Richard Stone, Braddyville, Ia. There are 12 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents, wife, sons Danny and Tarol, 2 grandchildren, 5 sisters and 6 brothers.

Sump, Marrel H.
Marrel H. Sump, 83 of Clarinda died Wednesday, April 3,1996 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital after several months of illness.
He was born March 10, 1913 near Yorktown, the son of William and Dorthea Nothwehr Sump. On Jan. 9, 1936, he married Ruth Sunderman at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
They farmed in the Yorktown area and later moved to Clarinda. After retirement from farming, he worked at the elevator and sold feed.
Survivors include wife, Ruth, of the home; children: Phyllis Shellenberger, Garden Grove, Ca; Darrel and Melanie Sump,, Clarinda; Sandra and Marvin McKinnon, Lincoln, Ne.; 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
Also surviving are sisters, Wilma Muller and Vera Wellhausen, Clarinda; son-in-law, William Mead, Davidson, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Marilyn Mead, and infant brother, Alvin.

Whigham, James Maurice
James Maurice Whigham, son of George Andrew and Mary Celestia (Walker) Whigham, was born in Colfax Twp. of Page County on January 17, 1901. He departed this life on Sunday, May 12, 1996, at Garden View Care Center, Shenandoah, Iowa.
Maurice was married to Wilma Verle Cox, daughter of James Harvey and Margaret Elizabeth (Agee) Cox, on May 30, 1936 in Jerico Springs, Missouri. Two children were born to this union: a daughter, Rita Kay, and a son, Maurice Alan.
He is survived by daughter, Rita, and son-in-law, Don Rorebeck, of Shenandoah, Iowa, and son, Alan, and daughter-in-law, Kathy, of Florence, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Jim and Leanne Rorebeck, Tony, Kelley, and Tina Whigham; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Mabel Kenagy of Afton, Iowa and Maxine Cochran of Castle Rock, Colorado; one brother-in-law, three sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Maurice was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers and one sister.
He lived all his life in Page County, Iowa. After retirement he lived in Clarinda, Iowa. He became a resident of Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa in 1993.
Maurice graduated from Amity High School in College Springs in 1919. He worked on the family farm, until he married. Then he worked on his farm near Blanchard. He produced a wide variety of animals, crops, vegetables and fruits. He provided well for his family.
He was a member of Farm Bureau. He volunteered to deliver Meals-on-Wheels in Clarinda. He was ready to help anyone in need. He enjoyed the 60-Up Club and the congregate Meals.
Maurice loved to travel. He was proud of having been in all of the states, except Alaska. He enjoyed taking pictures and slides of scenery and family members. He liked to play horseshoes, cards and bingo. He enjoyed pets and children. He loved to go for rides.
Maurice was a generous and active member of the United Presbyterian Church in College Springs.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 14, at the College Springs Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Duling officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery at College Springs. Memorials may be directed to the College Springs Presbyterian Church.

White, Ruth Alice Stinemates
Ruth Alice White, 74, Villisca, died Tuesday night, July 16, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Care Center
where she had been a resident since September 25, 1995.
She was born on October 29, 1921, in Villisca, the daughter of Fred James and Zula Vey Lewis
Stinemates.   She graduated from Villisca  High  School  in 1938.
During the war she worked at Dr. Cooper's office,  the bakery in Clarinda, and was a secretary at MHI
in Clarinda. On October 17, 1945, she married Harold B. White who survives. They farmed south of Villisca until 1988, when they moved to Red Oak. In 1993 they moved to Villisca. White was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Neighborhood Progressive Club and a life member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 8998.
White is survived by her husband, Harold, and five children, David H. and wife, Ardith White, Omaha; Ann and husband, Levi Bennett, Villisca; Marvin and wife, Julie White, Villisca; Howard and wife, Elaine White, Richardson, TX; Carol and husband, Larry Foote, Red Oak.
There are 13 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Linley and wife, Marie Stinemates, Cozad, NE; one aunt, Erma Huntington, Corning.
She was preceded in death by parents, brother Paul, sister Leila, one infant brother and two great grand-
children.        Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Friday, July 19, at Wolfe Funeral Home, Villisca, with the Rev. Albert Baker officiating. Visitation will be in the Villisca cemetery. Whitson, Lois Mae Gamble
Funeral services for Lois Mae Whitson, 84 of Shenandoah, will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15 at Hackett Funeral Home, Shenandoah.
Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Coin. Memorials are being established at the Coin United Methodist Church and the Shenandoah Childrens Library.
Open visitation will be at Hackett Funeral Home after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
Whitson died Monday, Feb. 12, 1996, shortly after arrival at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.
Lois Mae (Gamble) Whitson, the adopted daughter of Byron and Maude (Henderson) Gamble, was bom July 9, 1911 in Topeka, Ks.
She came to live with her adopted parents and brother, Wesley, on Christmas eve 1911, on a farm west of Coin, where she lived nearly 50 years.
She was educated in the Coin Public Schools, graduating in the class of 1929 from Coin Consolidated High School. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Emporia State, Kansas; Tarkio College, Missouri, and graduated from Peru State, Nebraska, with a bachelor of science in education.
She was a public school teacher for 45 years. In 1940, she married Charles Whitson on Sept. 26, at her country home, where she continued to live, teaching in Blanchard and Coin.
Following her husband's death in 1965, Whitson moved to Sidney to to teach in Fr.emont-Mills Schools, Thurman, retiring in 1976.

Wyckoff, Evon A. Moore Schollian - Evon A. Wyckoff, 75, formerly of New Market and Clarinda areas, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 1996 at Hinsdale Hospital, Hinsdale, Ill.
She had been cared for at the home of her son, Willis Schollian, Romeoville, Ill., before entering the hospital.
She was born Feb. 15, 1921 near New Market, the daughter of Roy and Goldie Burnham Moore. She married Jack Wyckoff in 1956. She worked at Lisle Corporation while living in Clarinda.  
Survivors include her husband, Jack, Blanchard; children: Janice Wait, Conroe, Texas; Willis Scholliam, Romeoville; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Also surviving are brothers and sisters Raymond Moore, Clarinda; Dean Moore, New Market; Verla Coston, Ainsley, Ne.; Ardith Clark, New Market.

Zimmerman, Ferne R., 87, of Clarinda, formerly of Overland Park, KS, died Monday morning, September 30, 1996, at Community Care Center.
She was born March 24,1909, at. Kansas City, KS to Richard Melvin and Margaret Ann (Sargent) Ray.

She was married to A.C. Zimmerman who preceded her in death. She had lived in Miami, FL and Kansas City, KS where she provided nursing care to people in their homes. She had been a resident at Community Care since July 31, 1988, transferring from a nursing home in Kansas City, KS to be near her niece, Jean Mascher of Clarinda.
Surviving are her niece, Jean Mascher and her husband Donald of Clarinda, nephew Richard H. Ray and his wife, Joyce of Maryland, great nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law Marjorie Ray of Clarinda.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brothers, Oliver and Harold Ray.
A prayer service was 10:15 am., Wednesday, October 2, 1996, at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ken Lampe officiating. Graveside services were held at Mt.
