Daise, Shirley Jean Gooden Shirley Jean Daise, passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, at Golden Living Center, Maryville, Mo. Shirley was born in Bedford to Ira and Myrtle Addams Gooden on April 1, 1929. She was the 10th child in the family. All of her siblings are deceased. Shirley is survived by her four children: Debbie Daise, Dallas, Texas, David Daise (Linda Kolega), St. Joseph, Mo., Sandra (John) Desch, Rock Hill, S.C., and Linda (Mickie) Pruitt, Elmo, Mo. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, 13 step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren. After attending high school in Clarinda, she married Bob Daise divorcing after 21 years. Shirley moved from Clearmont, Mo., to El Cajan, Calif., in 1974 and returned to Missouri six years ago to be closer to family. She worked at the Clarinda Mental Health Hospital for several years and was also a nurse’s aide at Grossmont Hospital in California until her retirement in 1988. She was also actively involved in the Sonrise Church in Santee, Calif. The family received friends from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda. The memorial service began immediately following the visitation. Dalton, Kenneth Alvin Kenneth Alvin Dalton was born March 12, 1931 at Perry, Iowa to James W. and Melissa Ann (Anderson) Dalton. He joined the United States Navy and served in the Pacific during the Korean War. Kenneth was a family man being close to his brothers and relatives attending the Dalton Reunion every year near Madrid, Iowa. Kenneth worked construction building swimming pools for Harry Rodine Company and Elite Pools. He worked this trade until he was 75 and decided it was time to retire. He and Joyce lived on a farm near Garden Grove, Iowa and Kenneth loved cutting wood everyday, farming, and his special time with his cows where they followed him and he visited with them which took a long time to chore to get all the visiting done. Kenneth entered into rest December 25, 2013 at Des Moines, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Howard Dalton; grandson Cody Dalton, and son-in-law by marriage Darrin Embray. He is survived by his wife Joyce Ann (Warner) Dalton; children Twyla Johnson and husband Bill of Des Moines, IA, Robert Dalton and wife Sarah of Des Moines, IA, Martin Dalton, of Des Moines; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren; children by marriage Dean Warner and wife Ellen of Carlisle, IA, Tammy Roland and husband Dave of Pleasantville, IA, Angel Lathrop of Indianola, IA, Steven Warner and wife Deedee of Carlisle, IA, and Latisha Embray of Knoxville, IA; ten grandchildren by marriage and four great grandchildren by marriage; five brothers: Russell Dalton and wife Wanda of Madrid, IA, Ralph Dalton and wife Waverly of Lady Lake, FL, Alfred Dalton and wife June of Madrid, IA, and Ronald Dalton and wife Joann of Marengo, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, December 30, 2013 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel, Clarinda, with Rev. Andrew Rubenking officiating. Visitation will be held 11 a.m. until service time. Davison, Truman Guy Funeral services for Truman Davison, age 83, of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Bedford Nursing and Rehab Center, Bedford, Iowa, will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 16, 2013 at the First Christian Church, Clarinda, Iowa with Rev. Beckie Linn Gregory officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 2-4 p.m., Sunday, December 15 at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial with military rites by American Legion Sergy Post 98 will be in… the Shearer Cemetery, Braddyville, Iowa. Memorials may be given in Truman’s name. Truman Guy Davison was born July 13, 1930, to Rolla and Ruth “Dorothy” Davison, in Braddyville, Iowa. Truman graduated from Braddyville High School, Braddyville, Iowa. He married Charlotte Ulmer, May 26, 1953 in Hopkins and they spent a couple of years in California where Truman was stationed in the Army. They then made their home on a farm east of Braddyville where they raised their four boys. They moved to Clarinda in 1982. Truman spent most of his life farming. He loved nature and his livestock. He had a green thumb when it came to planting fields, vegetable and flower gardens. He had a deep appreciation for traveling all over the United States. One of his favorite places to go was Branson, Missouri. When he retired from the farm he moved to Clarinda and worked for a short time at Westridge Quality Care, then went to work as the farm manager at the Page County Home. He really enjoyed his job and to this day many people comment on how he always grew the best sweet corn. He will be remembered for the smile on his face and his friendly conversations with anyone he met. After he retired from the County Home he loved helping people working in their yards and helping taking care of his aunt June. Truman belonged to the First Christian Church and was active at the High School home football games passing out programs. He loved dancing, country music, hamming it up, story-telling of his track years and his time in the Army. He took great pride in his country, family and the farm life. Preceeding Truman in death were his parents; his wife, Charlotte, brother, Delmar; grandson, Robert Davison; and great grandson, Bryston Davison. Robert Arthur Dawson was born June 1, 1958, to Robert Eugene Dawson and Rojean Louise (Kneedler) Dawson in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up in the Des Moines area and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1976. He worked with his Dad making tile and pipe in Des Moines. Bob had a long battle with Chron's disease and it kept him from working for many years. He came to Southwest Iowa moving to Mt. Ayr for a short time in the 1990's, later moving to Clarinda where he resided at the time of his death. Bob enjoyed putting model cars and motorcycles together as well as full sized cars. He liked to keep his cars clean and in top condition. Bob loved animals especially cats. He was a people person and enjoyed visiting with friends and family. Preceding Bob in death were his parents. Survivors include his sisters, Judy Dixon and husband David of Norwalk, Iowa, Robin Campbell of Clearfield, Iowa and Roxanne Werner and husband Kenny of Clearfield, Iowa; special friends Connie Grebert and Ed Stoll of Clarinda, Iowa; many nieces; nephews; other relative and friends
Diggs, Phyllis Irene Pershing Funeral services for Phyllis Diggs, age 99, of Hopkins, Missouri, formerly of New Market, Iowa, who entered into peace Monday, January 21, 2013 at Maryville, Missouri, will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 25, 2013 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Russ Clark officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 1-2 p.m., Friday prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa. A memorial may be given in her name. Phyllis Irene Diggs was born November 29, 1913, in Taylor County, Iowa, the daughter of Tracy Livingston Pershing and Blanche (Portlock) Pershing. She grew up on the farm, living in Page, Taylor and Montgomery counties attending rural schools. Phyllis was a graduate of Villisca High School. She was set up on a date with Hildred Diggs; the relationship continued and they were married on October 22, 1931.To this union a daughter, Wylene was born. Hildred was a farm hand and the family moved around southwest Iowa and Northwest Missouri and later bought 80 acres west of New Market. They farmed and raised hogs for over fifteen years. They sold the farm and moved to Bedford where they lived until Hildred passed away in 1991. Phyllis later moved to Hopkins to be near her daughter. Phyllis was an expert seamstress, sewing clothes for herself and her daughter. She enjoyed working in her garden, canning and living off of the farm. Her family was very important to her and she had a special spot in her heart for her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents; husband, Hildred Diggs; brother, Alvin Pershing; seven sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Wylene Bix and husband Elvis of Hopkins, Missouri; four grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; fourteen great, great grandchildren; four step great granddaughters; two step great grandsons; two step great, great grandsons; nieces; nephews and many friends.
Dinville, Elaine Susanna Martin Elaine Susanna (Martin) Dinville was born on February 26, 1926 in Oakdale, Nebraska, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Rameaker) Martin. Elaine was the third of eight children and the eldest daughter. Elaine entered into eternal peace on May 15, 2013 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa. Elaine attended STAR Country School for 8 years (walking 2 miles each way to school) and graduated from Albion High School with the Class of 1943. Upon graduation she moved with her family to a farm near Imogene, Iowa. Elaine worked in Shenandoah for McClelland's Five and Dime for a number of years before starting her banking career at the City National Bank in 1956 until her retirement in 1992. In July of 1966 Elaine was united in marriage to Thomas A. "Tony" Dinville. The couple made their home in Shenandoah. Elaine was an active member of the community. She was involved in the Shenandoah Hospital Auxiliary, Christian Women, St. Mary's Guild, Business and Professional Women, the American Legion Auxiliary and was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed bowling, square dancing, polka dancing, ceramics and fishing and gardening with her husband Tony. Elaine was famous for her scotcharoos and her warm smile. Although Elaine had no children, she loved being around a house full of little ones and enjoyed her role as "surrogate grandma" to Kerri, Zachary, Courtney and John McGargill. In these last several months every child she saw, she thought was her baby sister Mary Ann. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Vincent, Edward and Marvin. Dorl, Charles Edwin Sr Charles Edwin Dorl, Sr., son of Wilson Charles and Beulah (Nelson) Dorl was born on September 3, 1936 in New Market, Iowa. Charles entered into eternal peace on December 4, 2013 at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family. Charles grew up in the community of New Market. He graduated from New Market Community School with the Class of 1954. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country with pride until 1966. Following his discharge he worked for the University of Nebraska in Omaha for a year, after that he working for the Veterans Administration in Lincoln for 5 years. Charles retired from the VA on disability in September of 1982; he then went to work for the Bent County Sheriffs Department as a deputy sheriff. He worked there for three years before taking a job with the Douglas County Corrections Department. He also worked for Ralph Kohler as a guide for geese and duck hunters in Tekamah, Nebraska. On December 13, 2008 he was united in marriage to Shirley Racine at the Norwich United Methodist Church. Some of his hobbies included duck hunting, fishing, gardening, planting flowers, bowling, cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team and going to the casino. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-parents: Wilson and Jean Dorl and Beulah and Joe Kelly; sister Carolyn Owens; sons Carl, John and Roger Dorl and grandson Austin Winters. Drake, Donald Lloyd Donald Lloyd Drake passed away on March 4, 2013 at the VA Central Iowa Health Care Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 84. He was born on December 4, 1928 in Burchard, Nebraska. Don moved to Shenandoah when he was 15, graduating with the class of 1947. He was united in marriage to Marian Eloise Rohrig on December 10, 1950. To this union three children were born, Steven Lloyd Drake, Eloise Joann Drake and Debra Ann Drake. He served in the Korean War in the U.S. Army with distinction earning the Korean service medal with three bronze service stars and United Nations service medal. Aside from the time Don spent in the army he spent most of this life working for either the beef packing industry or the railroad. His favorite activities included loving and caring for his dogs, splitting and cutting wood, snowmobiling and watching football. Don also enjoyed attending his father's family reunions. He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph Graydon Drake and Ruth Hillis (Hawk) Drake, brothers Leland Ralph Drake and wife Dorothy and Roger Neil Drake. Those left to cherish his memory are his son: Steven L. Drake and wife Linda Kay of Livingston, Montana and their three children Steven Lloyd Drake, Jr., Sean David Drake, and Traci Ann Tyler, daughters: Eloise Joann Drake of Bellevue, Nebraska and Debra Ann Brown and husband Greg of Dow City, Iowa and their three children Johanna, Elsa, and Ian, ex-wives Marian Eloise Drake and Shirley Bertram Drake. Dunn, Shelly VanFosson Celebration of Life Services for Shelly Dunn, age 51, of Clearmont, Missouri, who entered into peace Saturday, Jan. 26 at her daughter's home in Agency, Missouri, were held Thursday, Jan. 31 at 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in College Springs. Visitation with the family was held Wednesday evening at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Clarinda from 5-7 p.m. Burial was in the Shearer Cemetery, Braddyville. Memorials may be given in her name. Shelly Dunn was born Dec. 29, 1961 to Kenneth VanFosson and Shirley (Teuscher) VanFosson in Clarinda and passed away Jan. 26 at her daughter's home in Agency, Missouri. Shelly was a 1980 graduate of West Nodaway High School in Burlington Junction, MO. She was united in marriage March 29, 1979 to Charles "Chuck" Dunn at her parents house near Elmo, MO. Shelly worked at Lisle Corporation in Clarinda for eighteen years and most recently had worked part-time as a CNA at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda for the last several years. Shelly loved to spend time with her family and friends. Shelly was preceded in death by her husband; Chuck Dunn, mother; Shirley VanFosson, mother-in-law; Sara Carmichael, father-in-law; Marvin Dunn, and a nephew; Jacob Marriott. Survivors include her son; Jeremy Dunn, wife Beverly, and grandson Walker of Maryville, Missouri, Daughter; Jayne White and husband Ky of Agency, Missouri, Father; Kenny VanFosson and friend Marlene of Elmo, Missouri, Sister; Cathy Lesher and husband Terry of Westboro, Missouri, Brother; Jason VanFosson of College Springs, Sister; Dorene Richmond and husband Herb of Council Bluffs, Sister-in-law; Dee Marriott and Alan Stiens of Maryville, Missouri, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Eberly, John Leroy John Leroy Eberly was born to Ray Martin and Onieda Bell (Beery) Eberly on April 10, 1933 in Taylor County, Iowa. He served his country as a soldier with the United States Army serving during the Korean War. He married Helen Hewitt-Hanson on May 24, 1975 at the Kuntz Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Leroy worked for the City of Villisca for 15 years and for Montgomery County for another 15 years. He retired from Eaton’s after 15 years as a forklift operator in the Transmission Division. He enjoyed watching old western movies and was an avid John Deere collector. Leroy was a lifelong resident of Villisca and a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran church there. Leroy passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the age of 80 at the Villisca Good Samaritan Society. He is preceded in death by his parents Ray and Onieda; first wife Ruth, wife Helen; daughters: Denise Diane and Dixie Lynne; son Kenneth Otis Frese; step daughter Judy Hanson; brother-in-law Darwin Snyder. Burial will be at the Butler Cemetery in rural Shambaugh, Iowa. There will be a lunch following the service in the basement of the church. Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Edgar, Lois Eleanor Swanson Lois Eleanor Swanson Edgar passed away early Monday morning at the Elm Heights Care Center. Lois Eleanor Edgar was born September 6, 1922, in the Bethesda, Iowa, area. She passed away peacefully after a very brief illness on October 28, 2013, at the age of 91. The daughter of Alvin and Mabel (Gustafson) Swanson, Lois was baptized as a baby in the Bethesda Lutheran Church, where she was confirmed on August 30, 1936. Lois attended the Excelsior country school in Tarkio Township and Hillcrest in Douglas Township. She graduated from Clarinda High School in 1940 and enjoyed her class reunions. Lois was united in marriage to Stanley Edgar, Jr., of Clarinda on August 17, 1941, at the Christian Church in Maryville, Missouri. They were blessed with six children: James Lee, Shirley Ann, Sandra Kay, Susan Mae, and two children who died at birth, Joyce Ann and Dennis Stephen. She had one brother, Wayne Swanson. While attending high school, she was employed at the Spurgeon's store in Clarinda. She was employed at the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce office after graduation and at the office of the Lisle Corporation while her husband was at sea in the Navy. When Stanley was stationed at bases in the United States, Lois worked for the civil service in Williamsburg, Virginia; Miami, Florida; and Galveston, Texas. After the war, Lois and Stanley lived in Kansas City, Missouri, for two years. In 1947, the couple moved to Shenandoah, where Stanley was employed by the Iowa Power and Light Company. In 1963, Lois was employed by the Shenandoah High School as secretary to the principal, a position she held for 22 years. She enjoyed her work, and the students, teachers, and parents were all very special to her. She received the Shenandoah Chamber of Commerce "Employee of the Month Award" and was named an "Honorary Member of the FFA." The Shenandoah High School annual of 1973 was co-dedicated to Lois. Lois and Stanley were members of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Shenandoah since 1950. Lois was a Cub Scout den mother, a Girl Scout leader, and a Sunday-school teacher. She and Stanley enjoyed traveling and camping. They helped organize the Waubonsie Ramblers Camping Club, for which Lois was secretary. Their vacation home at Big Lake, Missouri, was enjoyed by the family for many years. Lois was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and enjoyed attending their programs and events. She was an expert seamstress, and in later years crocheted thousands of hot pads and dishcloths, which she generously gave away to friends and acquaintances. Lois was preceded in death by her parents Alvin and Mabel Swanson, her in-laws Stanley, Sr., and Nina Edgar, her husband Stanley Edgar, Jr., her brother Wayne and sister-in-law Winifred Swanson, her son-in-law Martin Franks, her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many cousins. She is survived by her son James Edgar and wife Cathryn of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter Shirley Lundgren and husband Gordon of Shenandoah; daughter Sandra Chesshire and husband Howard of Essex; and daughter Susan Jarrett of El Dorado Hills, California. Edwards, Martha Anna Appel Martha Anna Appel Edwards passed away early Thursday morning at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah. Martha Anna Appel was born on October 11, 1920 to August and Augusta Vestfall Appel in East Hartford, Connecticut . It was in this area that she attended grade school, high school and eventually college where she was a member of the sigma Lamba sorority. Martha married Glen Edwards from Shenandoah, Ia on July 28, 1946 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, New York. At the time of the wedding, Martha was working as a tour guide at the Rockefeller Center in New York City and Glen had just been discharged as a first lieutenant in the US Army Air Corp. Following a week long honeymoon at Bell Harbor, Long Island the couple came back to the Shenandoah area to make their home on a farm south of Shenandoah where she enjoyed being a farm wife. Martha resided on the farm until moving to Elm Heights Care Center in 1998. Martha is preceded in death by both her parents, husband Glen Edwards and brother Gary Appel. He was born in Clarinda on May 12, 1955 to Larry and Lorraine (Wells) Eighmy. Words are inadequate to express the joy of his arrival by his parents as well as extended family. He grew up in the New Market area and graduated from New Market High School and attended Iowa Western College, Clarinda. Dave was united in marriage on Dec. 3, 1982 to Maggie Hatch. Dave enjoyed farming in the New Market/Siam area. He was employed at Clarinda Mental Health for seventeen years and was later employed by Orr Trucking for almost twenty years. Dave had a quick wit and a very dry sense of humor. He will be remembered for his kindness and thoughtfulness of others. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and was musically inclined; playing the Saxophone, piano and organ. Dave is preceded in death by his father, Larry Eighmy. Eike, Sarah Beth McNitt Sarah Beth (McNitt) Eike was born March 16, 1925 in Mason City, Iowa; a daughter to Bert and Myra (Reeve) McNitt. Sarah married Bill Eike on October 16, 1948 in Cedar Rapids and to this union were born four children: Lawrence, Becky, John and Rachel. Sarah worked as a Radio Test Technician for Rockwell Colins in Cedar Rapids retiring there in the early 1980s. After living in Cedar Rapids for almost 50 years, Sarah moved to Clarinda in 1998 to be closer to her daughters. Sarah entered into rest at the age of 87 on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill and brothers: James McNitt and Reeve McNitt. Gail Lynn Eitzen was born August 18, 1955 in Clarinda, Iowa to Thaine Cabbage and LaDonna (Pratt) Cabbage. She grew up in the New Market area and graduated from New Market High School. Gail and Gerald Eitzen were united in marriage March 25, 1978 in New Market, Iowa. They were blessed with three daughters, Brynn, Jenna and Kara. Gail and Gerald farmed in the East River Township area. Prior to and early in her marriage Gail worked at Page County State Bank. Raising her children and being a partner with the farming operation were her main occupation and after her children were older she was a Family Support Worker for Southwest Iowa Families. Gail enjoyed horses, and watching her father pull them, playing the piano as people sang along, and the baby calves being born on the farm. Friends and family were of great importance and enjoyment to Gail. She loved spending time with her three daughters. She was a caring person who liked helping others and being with children or "little people" as Gail would say. Gail was diagnosis with small cell lung cancer in October 2011 and underwent successful treatment at that time. December 2012 the cancer had metastasized to the brain where her fight continued until she entered into peace with her Father, Thaine Cabbage who preceded her in death. Raymond Kenneth Eitzen was born September 3, 1927 in Page County near Bethesda to Herman Eitzen and Emma (Sunderman) Eitzen. He grew up on the family farm with his four brothers and two sisters. Raymond graduated from Clarinda High School in 1945 and attended two quarters at Iowa State University, Ames. He joined the Marines April 4, 1946 and served until April 21, 1947 at the end of World War II while stationed in Los Angeles, California. He was united in marriage December 9, 1961 to Antoinette Cecelia (Tony) Fucinaro in Omaha, Nebraska at the Pacific Hills Lutheran Church. She preceded him in death October 21, 1996. Raymond started farming in 1947 and bought the home place in 1959. He also worked at Swanson Grocery in Clarinda for three years while in High School. He worked two winters in Los Angeles for Lockheed Aircraft 1955-1956 and 1956-1957. Farming and raising cattle was his love and passion. Raymond also enjoyed watching sports. Raymond was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Villisca, Iowa and the Farm Bureau. Family was important to Raymond and he was very fond of his nieces and nephews as well as Tony's two nieces. Preceding Raymond in death were his parents; wife, Tony; brothers, Walter Eitzen, Harold Eitzen, Lloyd Eitzen, Wilbur Eitzen; sisters, Leona Robberts, Marjorie Moore and infant sister, Mildred Eitzen. Survivors include his special friend, Aileen Schafer of Villisca; sisters-in-law, Ruth Eitzen of Villisca, Marie Eitzen of Clarinda; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews and many friends. Engstrand, Brooke Whitney Brooke Whitney Engstrand, the daughter of Eddie O. and Vicki L. (Mather) Engstrand was born May 15, 1989 in Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at her home in North Hollywood, California at the age of 23 years, 7 months and 25 days. Brooke was raised in Stanton, Iowa. While in school, Brooke participated in basketball, track, softball, band and FFA serving as president of their chapter. She was active in 4-H showing her much loved horses and winning many 4-H awards. Brooke participated on horse judging teams at the local and state level, and even selected to judge a national event in Ohio. She graduated with the Stanton High School Class of 2008. Brooke furthered her education at Conservatory Of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe, Arizona. She completed internships in Los Angeles, California before graduation. Following graduation, Brooke went to work for Wild Woods Production and most recently, was a Product Support Technician at Blue Microphones in Westlake Village, California. She loved attending comedy clubs, even performing her own three minute gig on stage. Brooke was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton and attended Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, California. Brooke was preceded in death by her grandparents: Harry Orland Engstrand; and Erwin and Marie Mather. Evans, Vera Joy Knott Vera Joy Evans, one of three children of Minnie (Ast) and Howard William Knott, was born on March 22, 1916 on her grandparents' farm near Minden, Iowa. Her family lived in several different locations in this area where Vera attended country schools. When she was 12 years old, her family moved to Avoca, Iowa due to her father's declining health. Vera continued her education in the Avoca public schools. Vera and Loren Edward Evans were married on October 25, 1934 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Roberta, Ronald, and Dale. The couple established their first home on a farm near Oakland, Iowa. They eventually partnered in a business, owning a Skelly gas station. They expanded their business to include a livestock trucking and custom feed grinding operation. In 1947, they purchased their first farm northwest of Carson, Iowa, where they continued to live and expand their farm operation. Vera and Loren were married 64 years when Loren passed March 23, 1999. Vera continued to live on the home place until 2010, when she entered Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa. Vera was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church in Carson and served on many church committees. She belonged to the "Quality Quilters" at the church and looked forward to their weekly quilting bees. Vera also was a faithful blood donor for many years. Vera and Loren spent much time in their motor home with family and friends and visited destinations in Alaska, Canada, Florida, and Texas. She loved to be with family and friends and enjoyed being "on the go". Spring and summer were Vera's favorite times of the year so she could be outdoors to work in her yard and garden. She could never have too many potted geraniums on her steps. Vera passed away on March 23, 2013 at the Elm Heights in Shenandoah, at the age of 97 years and 1 day. She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband Loren; son Ronald Evans in 1998, and brother Gene Knott. Vera is survived by her daughter Roberta Overholser of Shenandoah; son Dale Evans and wife Kay of Carson; ten grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and brother Earl Knott of Waterford, MI. Fesenmeyer, Dale Dale Fesenmeyer, 88, died Thursday, March 7, 2013 at his home in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Dale, a New Year’s baby, was born at his grandparents’ family farm just north of Clarinda, Iowa, on January 1, 1925 . His parents, Lester and Bessie Barrett Fesenmeyer, moved to their own farm east of Shambaugh, where they raised six children. All six attended the Mt. Joy School. Dale later graduated from Clarinda High School. He remembered helping build the stone FAA Chapter House, now part of the Nodaway Valley Historical Museum. While working at the Berry Seed Company, Dale met and married Etta Runyan of Braddyville on June 5, 1946. For many years, Dale was an employee of the Clarinda Hog Yard, but in 1968, after attending Colorado Aero Tech, he became an airframe power plant mechanic job with TWA in Kansas City. After retirement in 1986, the couple moved to Excelsior Springs, Mo., but spent many of their winters on their land near Rio Hondo, Texas. Avid travelers, Dale and Etta vacationed in New Zealand, Mexico, and Hawaii, and explored the back roads of America in their RV. Dale enjoyed attending bluegrass festivals and continued to enjoy bluegrass music throughout his life. His other interests included genealogy, reading Westerns, fishing, playing cards and exercising. He was an dedicated member of the local senior exercise group until his final days. Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Etta D. Fesenmeyer, and a son, Ronald L. Fesenmeyer. He is survived by daughter, Linda Jones; sisters, Leona Rubin and Joan Hughes, both of Clarinda; brothers, Gerald Jean and Jerry Paul of Rio Hondo, Texas, and Fred of Eldon, Mo.; two grandchildren, Sarah Herriott of Eureka, Calif., and Aaron Burton of Concord, Calif.; and one great grandchild, Emmett Herriott. He grew up in rural Page and Taylor County attending school in New Market until the family moved to Clarinda attending Clarinda Schools and finished his education at South Page when the family moved to the South Page school district. Dusty was united in marriage, to Lisa Ann Moses on July 30, 1988 in Shambaugh, Iowa. They made their home in Shambaugh with their three children, Amanda, Cody and Brandon. Dusty often drove truck from coast to coast. While his kids were growing up, Dusty loved taking them along on the road. His favorite driving job was hauling cattle. Dusty was always passionate about fishing and junking. Lisa and Dusty loved spoiling and spending time with their three grandchildren; Gunnar Eli Foster Searl, Jaden Michael Searl, Makenzi Rae Foster. Helen Dorothy Freudenburg died January 4, 2013 at the Eiler House, Clarinda, Iowa. She was born June 11, 1919 at the family in East River Township, the daughter of Albert Hartstack and Mae (Spielman) Hartstack. After attending Page County country schools, she graduated from eighth grade and continued to work on the family farm in East River Township. In October 1939 she was baptized and confirmed into the St. John Lutheran Church and participated in Walther League. On February 10, 1943, she married Ralph Freudenburg of Clarinda and moved to his farm east of Clarinda. They had two daughters, Elaine and Thelma. The couple lived on the same farm until just after their 50th wedding anniversary in 1993, when they moved to Garfield Manor 1 in Clarinda. Helen served as secretary-treasurer of the Condo association for several years. Following Ralph's death in 2000, she stayed at the condo until October 2012 when she moved to Eiler House Assisted Living. She was enjoying her new home until 12-12-12 when she broke her hip in a fall. Over the years, she was known for her embroidering and cookie baking. She helped the quilts at St. John as long as she was able. Preceding her in death were her parents; infant brother; husband, Ralph, sister-in-law, Phyllis Hartstack; in-laws, Ruben and Edith Freudenburg, Melvin and Leona Freudenburg. Frodsham, Wilma Edith Murren Wilma Edith Frodsham was born in Montgomery County, Iowa near Villisca, on April 10, 1916 to Oliver Glee "Ollie" and Dora (Schroeder) Murren. She grew up in the North Page neighborhood in northern Page County. Wilma was united in marriage to Harry Edgar "Ed" Frodsham November 10, 1945 at Yuma, AZ. Wilma had moved to California in 1945 to live with an aunt during World War II and met Ed and the couple got married. They returned to Los Angeles to live . Ed's work brought him back to the Los Angeles ship yards. In January 1950 they moved to Cypress, CA where Ed worked at Douglas Aircraft and Wilma at the school cafeteria near Knotts Berry Farm & Disneyland. They were at Cypress for 12 years returning to New Market, IA in 1972 to retire. Wilma was very active in the New Market Methodist Church and the New Market Community Library. She joined the Methodist Church in Villisca at age 16. She graduated Villisca High School and her work outside the home included being a maid and a cook in cafes and school cafeterias. In August of 2012 she moved to Nebraska to be near her daughter at Fremont. On Wednesday, April 10, 2013 Wilma went to be with her Lord. She was preceded in death by husband Ed in 1996; daughter Carol Lynn and 3 infant daughters; two sisters Roena Reed and Catherin Calhoon; and brother John Murren. Wilma is survived by daughter Lori Frodsham and special friend Duane Dockweiler both of Arlington, NE; grandsons Justin Ridnour and wife Courtney and Jason Ridnour and wife Misty, all of Clarinda; great grandchildren Jacob, Cole, Blakely and Jesalynn Ridnour all of Clarinda; sisters Leona Templeton, Red Oak, IA, Ellen Baker, Kansas City, MO; brothers Oliver Murren, Villisca, IA and Gene Murren, Erie, CO; many nieces and nephews. Daise, Shirley Jean Gooden

Shirley Jean Daise, passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, at Golden Living Center, Maryville, Mo. Shirley was born in Bedford to Ira and Myrtle Addams Gooden on April 1, 1929. She was the 10th child in the family. All of her siblings are deceased.
Shirley is survived by her four children: Debbie Daise, Dallas, Texas, David Daise (Linda Kolega), St. Joseph, Mo., Sandra (John) Desch, Rock Hill, S.C., and Linda (Mickie) Pruitt, Elmo, Mo. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, 13 step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren.
After attending high school in Clarinda, she married Bob Daise divorcing after 21 years. Shirley moved from Clearmont, Mo., to El Cajan, Calif., in 1974 and returned to Missouri six years ago to be closer to family. She worked at the Clarinda Mental Health Hospital for several years and was also a nurse’s aide at Grossmont Hospital in California until her retirement in 1988. She was also actively involved in the Sonrise Church in Santee, Calif.
The family received friends from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda. The memorial service began immediately following the visitation.

Dalton, Kenneth Alvin

Kenneth Alvin Dalton was born March 12, 1931 at Perry, Iowa to James W. and Melissa Ann (Anderson) Dalton. He joined the United States Navy and served in the Pacific during the Korean War. Kenneth was a family man being close to his brothers and relatives attending the Dalton Reunion every year near Madrid, Iowa. Kenneth worked construction building swimming pools for Harry Rodine Company and Elite Pools. He worked this trade until he was 75 and decided it was time to retire. He and Joyce lived on a farm near Garden Grove, Iowa and Kenneth loved cutting wood everyday, farming, and his special time with his cows where they followed him and he visited with them which took a long time to chore to get all the visiting done.
Kenneth entered into rest December 25, 2013 at Des Moines, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Howard Dalton; grandson Cody Dalton, and son-in-law by marriage Darrin Embray.
He is survived by his wife Joyce Ann (Warner) Dalton; children Twyla Johnson and husband Bill of Des Moines, IA, Robert Dalton and wife Sarah of Des Moines, IA, Martin Dalton, of Des Moines; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren; children by marriage Dean Warner and wife Ellen of Carlisle, IA, Tammy Roland and husband Dave of Pleasantville, IA, Angel Lathrop of Indianola, IA, Steven Warner and wife Deedee of Carlisle, IA, and Latisha Embray of Knoxville, IA; ten grandchildren by marriage and four great grandchildren by marriage; five brothers: Russell Dalton and wife Wanda of Madrid, IA, Ralph Dalton and wife Waverly of Lady Lake, FL, Alfred Dalton and wife June of Madrid, IA, and Ronald Dalton and wife Joann of Marengo, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Davison, Truman Guy

Funeral services for Truman Davison, age 83, of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Bedford Nursing and Rehab Center, Bedford, Iowa, will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 16, 2013 at the First Christian Church, Clarinda, Iowa with Rev. Truman Guy Davison was born July 13, 1930, to Rolla and Ruth “Dorothy” Davison, in Braddyville, Iowa. Truman graduated from Braddyville High School, Braddyville, Iowa. He married Charlotte Ulmer, May 26, 1953 in Hopkins and they spent a couple of years in California where Truman was stationed in the Army. They then made their home on a farm east of Braddyville where they raised their four boys. They moved to Clarinda in 1982.

Truman spent most of his life farming. He loved nature and his livestock. He had a green thumb when it came to planting fields, vegetable and flower gardens. He had a deep appreciation for traveling all over the United States. One of his favorite places to go was Branson, Missouri. When he retired from the farm he moved to Clarinda and worked for a short time at Westridge Quality Care, then went to work as the farm manager at the Page County Home. He really enjoyed his job and to this day many people comment on how he always grew the best sweet corn. He will be remembered for the smile on his face and his friendly conversations with anyone he met. After he retired from the County Home he loved helping people working in their yards and helping taking care of his aunt June.

Truman belonged to the First Christian Church and was active at the High School home football games passing out programs. He loved dancing, country music, hamming it up, story-telling of his track years and his time in the Army. He took great pride in his country, family and the farm life.

Preceeding Truman in death were his parents; his wife, Charlotte, brother, Delmar; grandson, Robert Davison; and great grandson, Bryston Davison.

Robert Arthur Dawson was born June 1, 1958, to Robert Eugene Dawson and Rojean Louise (Kneedler) Dawson in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up in the Des Moines area and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1976. He worked with his Dad making tile and pipe in Des Moines. Bob had a long battle with Chron's disease and it kept him from working for many years. He came to Southwest Iowa moving to Mt. Ayr for a short time in the 1990's, later moving to Clarinda where he resided at the time of his death.

Bob enjoyed putting model cars and motorcycles together as well as full sized cars. He liked to keep his cars clean and in top condition. Bob loved animals especially cats. He was a people person and enjoyed visiting with friends and family.

Preceding Bob in death were his parents.

Diggs, Phyllis Irene Pershing

Funeral services for Phyllis Diggs, age 99, of Hopkins, Missouri, formerly of New Market, Iowa, who entered into peace Monday, January 21, 2013 at Maryville, Missouri, will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 25, 2013 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Russ Clark officiating. Phyllis Irene Diggs was born November 29, 1913, in Taylor County, Iowa, the daughter of Tracy Livingston Pershing and Blanche (Portlock) Pershing. She grew up on the farm, living in Page, Taylor and Montgomery counties attending rural schools. Phyllis was a graduate of Villisca High School. She was set up on a date with Hildred Diggs; the relationship continued and they were married on October 22, 1931.To this union a daughter, Wylene was born.

Hildred was a farm hand and the family moved around southwest Iowa and Northwest Missouri and later bought 80 acres west of New Market. They farmed and raised hogs for over fifteen years. They sold the farm and moved to Bedford where they lived until Hildred passed away in 1991. Phyllis later moved to Hopkins to be near her daughter.

Phyllis was an expert seamstress, sewing clothes for herself and her daughter. She enjoyed working in her garden, canning and living off of the farm. Her family was very important to her and she had a special spot in her heart for her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.

Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents; husband, Hildred Diggs; brother, Alvin Pershing; seven sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Wylene Bix and husband Elvis of Hopkins, Missouri; four grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; fourteen great, great grandchildren; four step great granddaughters; two step great grandsons; two step great, great grandsons; nieces; nephews and many friends.

Dinville, Elaine Susanna Martin

Elaine Susanna (Martin) Dinville was born on February 26, 1926 in Oakdale, Nebraska, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Rameaker) Martin. Elaine was the third of eight children and the eldest daughter. Elaine entered into eternal peace on May 15, 2013 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Elaine attended STAR Country School for 8 years (walking 2 miles each way to school) and graduated from Albion High School with the Class of 1943. Upon graduation she moved with her family to a farm near Imogene, Iowa. Elaine worked in Shenandoah for McClelland's Five and Dime for a number of years before starting her banking career at the City National Bank in 1956 until her retirement in 1992.

In July of 1966 Elaine was united in marriage to Thomas A. "Tony" Dinville. The couple made their home in Shenandoah. Elaine was an active member of the community. She was involved in the Shenandoah Hospital Auxiliary, Christian Women, St. Mary's Guild, Business and Professional Women, the American Legion Auxiliary and was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed bowling, square dancing, polka dancing, ceramics and fishing and gardening with her husband Tony. Elaine was famous for her scotcharoos and her warm smile.

Although Elaine had no children, she loved being around a house full of little ones and enjoyed her role as "surrogate grandma" to Kerri, Zachary, Courtney and John McGargill. In these last several months every child she saw, she thought was her baby sister Mary Ann.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Vincent, Edward and Marvin. Dorl, Charles Edwin Sr

Charles Edwin Dorl, Sr., son of Wilson Charles and Beulah (Nelson) Dorl was born on September 3, 1936 in New Market, Iowa. Charles entered into eternal peace on December 4, 2013 at his home in Shenandoah, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family.

Charles grew up in the community of New Market. He graduated from New Market Community School with the Class of 1954. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country with pride until 1966. Following his discharge he worked for the University of Nebraska in Omaha for a year, after that he working for the Veterans Administration in Lincoln for 5 years.

Charles retired from the VA on disability in September of 1982; he then went to work for the Bent County Sheriffs Department as a deputy sheriff. He worked there for three years before taking a job with the Douglas County Corrections Department. He also worked for Ralph Kohler as a guide for geese and duck hunters in Tekamah, Nebraska.

On December 13, 2008 he was united in marriage to Shirley Racine at the Norwich United Methodist Church. Some of his hobbies included duck hunting, fishing, gardening, planting flowers, bowling, cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team and going to the casino.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-parents: Wilson and Jean Dorl and Beulah and Joe Kelly; sister Carolyn Owens; sons Carl, John and Roger Dorl and grandson Austin Winters.

Drake, Donald Lloyd

Donald Lloyd Drake passed away on March 4, 2013 at the VA Central Iowa Health Care Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 84. He was born on December 4, 1928 in Burchard, Nebraska.

Don moved to Shenandoah when he was 15, graduating with the class of 1947. He was united in marriage to Marian Eloise Rohrig on December 10, 1950. To this union three children were born, Steven Lloyd Drake, Eloise Joann Drake and Debra Ann Drake. He served in the Korean War in the U.S. Army with distinction earning the Korean service medal with three bronze service stars and United Nations service medal. Aside from the time Don spent in the army he spent most of this life working for either the beef packing industry or the railroad. His favorite activities included loving and caring for his dogs, splitting and cutting wood, snowmobiling and watching football. Don also enjoyed attending his father's family reunions.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph Graydon Drake and Ruth Hillis (Hawk) Drake, brothers Leland Ralph Drake and wife Dorothy and Roger Neil Drake. Those left to cherish his memory are his son: Steven L. Celebration of Life Services for Shelly Dunn, age 51, of Clearmont, Missouri, who entered into peace Saturday, Jan. 26 at her daughter's home in Agency, Missouri, were held Thursday, Jan. 31 at 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in College Springs. Shelly Dunn was born Dec. 29, 1961 to Kenneth VanFosson and Shirley (Teuscher) VanFosson in Clarinda and passed away Jan. 26 at her daughter's home in Agency, Missouri. Shelly was a 1980 graduate of West Nodaway High School in Burlington Junction, MO. She was united in marriage March 29, 1979 to Charles "Chuck" Dunn at her parents house near Elmo, MO. Shelly worked at Lisle Corporation in Clarinda for eighteen years and most recently had worked part-time as a CNA at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda for the last several years. Shelly loved to spend time with her family and friends.
Shelly was preceded in death by her husband; Chuck Dunn, mother; Shirley VanFosson, mother-in-law; Sara Carmichael, father-in-law; Marvin Dunn, and a nephew; Jacob Marriott.
Survivors include her son; Jeremy Dunn, wife Beverly, and grandson Walker of Maryville, Missouri, Daughter; Jayne White and husband Ky of Agency, Missouri, Father; Kenny VanFosson and friend Marlene of Elmo, Missouri, Sister; Cathy Lesher and husband Terry of Westboro, Missouri, Brother; Jason VanFosson of College Springs, Sister; Dorene Richmond and husband Herb of Council Bluffs, Sister-in-law; Dee Marriott and Alan Stiens of Maryville, Missouri, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Eberly, John Leroy

John Leroy Eberly was born to Ray Martin and Onieda Bell (Beery) Eberly on April 10, 1933 in Taylor County, Iowa. He served his country as a soldier with the United States Army serving during the Korean War.

He married Helen Hewitt-Hanson on May 24, 1975 at the Kuntz Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska.

Leroy worked for the City of Villisca for 15 years and for Montgomery County for another 15 years. He retired from Eaton’s after 15 years as a forklift operator in the Transmission Division. He enjoyed watching old western movies and was an avid John Deere collector.

Leroy was a lifelong resident of Villisca and a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran church there.

Leroy passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the age of 80 at the Villisca Good Samaritan Society. He is preceded in death by his parents Ray and Onieda; first wife Ruth, wife Helen; daughters: Denise Diane and Dixie Lynne; son Kenneth Otis Frese; step daughter Judy Hanson; brother-in-law Darwin Snyder.

Edgar, Lois Eleanor Swanson

Lois Eleanor Swanson Edgar passed away early Monday morning at the Elm Heights Care Center.

Lois Eleanor Edgar was born September 6, 1922, in the Bethesda, Iowa, area. She passed away peacefully after a very brief illness on October 28, 2013, at the age of 91.

The daughter of Alvin and Mabel (Gustafson) Swanson, Lois was baptized as a baby in the Bethesda Lutheran Church, where she was confirmed on August 30, 1936. Lois attended the Excelsior country school in Tarkio Township and Hillcrest in Douglas Township. She graduated from Clarinda High School in 1940 and enjoyed her class reunions.

Lois was united in marriage to Stanley Edgar, Jr., of Clarinda on August 17, 1941, at the Christian Church in Maryville, Missouri. They were blessed with six children: James Lee, Shirley Ann, Sandra Kay, Susan Mae, and two children who died at birth, Joyce Ann and Dennis Stephen. She had one brother, Wayne Swanson.

While attending high school, she was employed at the Spurgeon's store in Clarinda. She was employed at the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce office after graduation and at the office of the Lisle Corporation while her husband was at sea in the Navy. When Stanley was stationed at bases in the United States, Lois worked for the civil service in Williamsburg, Virginia; Miami, Florida; and Galveston, Texas.

After the war, Lois and Stanley lived in Kansas City, Missouri, for two years. In 1947, the couple moved to Shenandoah, where Stanley was employed by the Iowa Power and Light Company. In 1963, Lois was employed by the Shenandoah High School as secretary to the principal, a position she held for 22 years. She enjoyed her work, and the students, teachers, and parents were all very special to her. She received the Shenandoah Chamber of Commerce "Employee of the Month Award" and was named an "Honorary Member of the FFA." The Shenandoah High School annual of 1973 was co-dedicated to Lois.

Lois and Stanley were members of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Shenandoah since 1950. Lois was a Cub Scout den mother, a Girl Scout leader, and a Sunday-school teacher. She and Stanley enjoyed traveling and camping. They helped organize the Waubonsie Ramblers Camping Club, for which Lois was secretary. Their vacation home at Big Lake, Missouri, was enjoyed by the family for many years.

Lois was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and enjoyed attending their programs and events. She was an expert seamstress, and in later years crocheted thousands of hot pads and dishcloths, which she generously gave away to friends and acquaintances.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents Alvin and Mabel Swanson, her in-laws Stanley, Sr., and Nina Edgar, her husband Stanley Edgar, Jr., her brother Wayne and sister-in-law Winifred Swanson, her son-in-law Martin Franks, her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many cousins.

She is survived by her son James Edgar and wife Cathryn of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter Shirley Lundgren and husband Gordon of Shenandoah; daughter Sandra Chesshire and husband Howard of Essex; and daughter Susan Jarrett of El Dorado Hills, California.

Grandchildren are Nichole (Edgar) Coons and husband Jason of Gardner, Kansas; Michelle (Edgar) Geary and husband Roger of Kansas City, Missouri; Charles Edgar and wife Melinda of Wagoner, Oklahoma; Cathryn (Edgar) Skoumal and husband Todd of Bennington, Nebraska; Kristen (Lundgren) Kaminski and husband Joe of Liberty, Missouri; Craig Lundgren and wife Jenne of Denver, Colorado; Tiffany (Franks) Sellers and husband John of Grand Island, Nebraska; Tracy (Franks) Gillespie and husband Shane of Rochester, Minnesota; Tobias Franks and wife Megan of San Diego, California; and Nicholas Jarrett and Paul Jarrett of Granite Bay, California.

Edwards, Martha Anna Appel

Martha Anna Appel Edwards passed away early Thursday morning at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah.

Martha Anna Appel was born on October 11, 1920 to August and Augusta Vestfall Appel in East Hartford, Connecticut . It was in this area that she attended grade school, high school and eventually college where she was a member of the sigma Lamba sorority.

Martha married Glen Edwards from Shenandoah, Ia on July 28, 1946 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, New York. At the time of the wedding, Martha was working as a tour guide at the Rockefeller Center in New York City and Glen had just been discharged as a first lieutenant in the US Army Air Corp. Following a week long honeymoon at Bell Harbor, Long Island the couple came back to the Shenandoah area to make their home on a farm south of Shenandoah where she enjoyed being a farm wife. Martha resided on the farm until moving to Elm Heights Care Center in 1998.

Martha is preceded in death by both her parents, husband Glen Edwards and brother Gary Appel. She is survived by nieces and nephews.

David Allan Eighmy, 58, of New Market passed away Saturday, Sept. 21 at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Clarinda on May 12, 1955 to Larry and Lorraine (Wells) Eighmy. Words are inadequate to express the joy of his arrival by his parents as well as extended family. He grew up in the New Market area and graduated from New Market High School and attended Iowa Western College, Clarinda. Dave was united in marriage on Dec. 3, 1982 to Maggie Hatch.
Dave enjoyed farming in the New Market/Siam area. He was employed at Clarinda Mental Health for seventeen years and was later employed by Orr Trucking for almost twenty years. Dave had a quick wit and a very dry sense of humor. He will be remembered for his kindness and thoughtfulness of others. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and was musically inclined; playing the Saxophone, piano and organ.
Dave is preceded in death by his father, Larry Eighmy.

Eike, Sarah Beth McNitt

Sarah Beth (McNitt) Eike was born March 16, 1925 in Mason City, Iowa; a daughter to Bert and Myra (Reeve) McNitt.
Sarah married Bill Eike on October 16, 1948 in Cedar Rapids and to this union were born four children: Lawrence, Becky, John and Rachel. Sarah worked as a Radio Test Technician for Rockwell Colins in Cedar Rapids retiring there in the early 1980s. After living in Cedar Rapids for almost 50 years, Sarah moved to Clarinda in 1998 to be closer to her daughters.
Sarah entered into rest at the age of 87 on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill and brothers: James McNitt and Reeve McNitt.

Funeral services for Sarah B. (McNitt) Eike, 87 of Clarinda, formerly of Cedar Rapids, will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 13 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda. Interment will follow the service in the Clarinda Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will begin at 1:00 p.m. and continue until the start of the service at the funeral home. Gail Lynn Eitzen was born August 18, 1955 in Clarinda, Iowa to Thaine Cabbage and LaDonna (Pratt) Cabbage. She grew up in the New Market area and graduated from New Market High School. Gail and Gerald Eitzen were united in marriage March 25, 1978 in New Market, Iowa. They were blessed with three daughters, Brynn, Jenna and Kara.

Gail and Gerald farmed in the East River Township area. Prior to and early in her marriage Gail worked at Page County State Bank. Raising her children and being a partner with the farming operation were her main occupation and after her children were older she was a Family Support Worker for Southwest Iowa Families.

Gail enjoyed horses, and watching her father pull them, playing the piano as people sang along, and the baby calves being born on the farm. Friends and family were of great importance and enjoyment to Gail. She loved spending time with her three daughters. She was a caring person who liked helping others and being with children or "little people" as Gail would say.

Gail was diagnosis with small cell lung cancer in October 2011 and underwent successful treatment at that time. December 2012 the cancer had metastasized to the brain where her fight continued until she entered into peace with her Father, Thaine Cabbage who preceded her in death.

Raymond Kenneth Eitzen was born September 3, 1927 in Page County near Bethesda to Herman Eitzen and Emma (Sunderman) Eitzen. He grew up on the family farm with his four brothers and two sisters. Raymond graduated from Clarinda High School in 1945 and attended two quarters at Iowa State University, Ames. He joined the Marines April 4, 1946 and served until April 21, 1947 at the end of World War II while stationed in Los Angeles, California. He was united in marriage December 9, 1961 to Antoinette Cecelia (Tony) Fucinaro in Omaha, Nebraska at the Pacific Hills Lutheran Church. She preceded him in death October 21, 1996.
Raymond started farming in 1947 and bought the home place in 1959. He also worked at Swanson Grocery in Clarinda for three years while in High School. He worked two winters in Los Angeles for Lockheed Aircraft 1955-1956 and 1956-1957. Farming and raising cattle was his love and passion. Raymond also enjoyed watching sports. Raymond was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Villisca, Iowa and the Farm Bureau. Family was important to Raymond and he was very fond of his nieces and nephews as well as Tony's two nieces.
Preceding Raymond in death were his parents; wife, Tony; brothers, Walter Eitzen, Harold Eitzen, Lloyd Eitzen, Wilbur Eitzen; sisters, Leona Robberts, Marjorie Moore and infant sister, Mildred Eitzen.
Survivors include his special friend, Aileen Schafer of Villisca; sisters-in-law, Ruth Eitzen of Villisca, Marie Eitzen of Clarinda; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews and many friends.

Engstrand, Brooke Whitney

Brooke Whitney Engstrand, the daughter of Eddie O. and Vicki L. (Mather) Engstrand was born May 15, 1989 in Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at her home in North Hollywood, California at the age of 23 years, 7 months and 25 days.

Brooke was raised in Stanton, Iowa. While in school, Brooke participated in basketball, track, softball, band and FFA serving as president of their chapter. She was active in 4-H showing her much loved horses and winning many 4-H awards. Brooke participated on horse judging teams at the local and state level, and even selected to judge a national event in Ohio. She graduated with the Stanton High School Class of 2008. Brooke furthered her education at Conservatory Of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe, Arizona. She completed internships in Los Angeles, California before graduation. Following graduation, Brooke went to work for Wild Woods Production and most recently, was a Product Support Technician at Blue Microphones in Westlake Village, California. She loved attending comedy clubs, even performing her own three minute gig on stage. Brooke was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton and attended Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, California.

Brooke was preceded in death by her grandparents: Harry Orland Engstrand; and Erwin and Marie Mather.

Brooke is survived by her parents: Eddie and Vicki Engstrand of Stanton, IA; sister, Heather Vencil and husband Evan of Windsor Heights, IA; and grandmother, Phyllis Engstrand of Clarinda, IA; aunts and uncles: Karen (Bob) Hackett of Burlington Junction, MO; Galen (Claire) Mather of Byers, CO; Aaron (Tara) Mather of Plainview, TX; Mark (Sara) Engstrand of Clarinda, IA; Eric Engstrand of Braddyville, IA; and Rex (Brenda) Engstrand of Cumming, IA; along with other relatives and many friends.

Evans, Vera Joy Knott

Vera Joy Evans, one of three children of Minnie (Ast) and Howard William Knott, was born on March 22, 1916 on her grandparents' farm near Minden, Iowa. Her family lived in several different locations in this area where Vera attended country schools. When she was 12 years old, her family moved to Avoca, Iowa due to her father's declining health. Vera continued her education in the Avoca public schools.

Vera and Loren Edward Evans were married on October 25, 1934 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Roberta, Ronald, and Dale.

The couple established their first home on a farm near Oakland, Iowa. They eventually partnered in a business, owning a Skelly gas station. They expanded their business to include a livestock trucking and custom feed grinding operation. In 1947, they purchased their first farm northwest of Carson, Iowa, where they continued to live and expand their farm operation.

Vera and Loren were married 64 years when Loren passed March 23, 1999. Vera continued to live on the home place until 2010, when she entered Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Vera was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church in Carson and served on many church committees. She belonged to the "Quality Quilters" at the church and looked forward to their weekly quilting bees. Vera also was a faithful blood donor for many years.

Vera and Loren spent much time in their motor home with family and friends and visited destinations in Alaska, Canada, Florida, and Texas. She loved to be with family and friends and enjoyed being "on the go". Spring and summer were Vera's favorite times of the year so she could be outdoors to work in her yard and garden. She could never have too many potted geraniums on her steps.

Vera passed away on March 23, 2013 at the Elm Heights in Shenandoah, at the age of 97 years and 1 day. She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband Loren; son Ronald Evans in 1998, and brother Gene Knott.

Vera is survived by her daughter Roberta Overholser of Shenandoah; son Dale Evans and wife Kay of Carson; ten grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and brother Earl Knott of Waterford, MI.

Interment in Fairview Pioneer Cemetery, rural Treynor, Iowa.

Fesenmeyer, Dale

Dale Fesenmeyer, 88, died Thursday, March 7, 2013 at his home in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Dale, a New Year’s baby, was born at his grandparents’ family farm just north of Clarinda, Iowa, on January 1, 1925 . His parents, Lester and Bessie Barrett Fesenmeyer, moved to their own farm east of Shambaugh, where they raised six children. All six attended the Mt. Joy School. Dale later graduated from Clarinda High School. He remembered helping build the stone FAA Chapter House, now part of the Nodaway Valley Historical Museum.

While working at the Berry Seed Company, Dale met and married Etta Runyan of Braddyville on June 5, 1946. For many years, Dale was an employee of the Clarinda Hog Yard, but in 1968, after attending Colorado Aero Tech, he became an airframe power plant mechanic job with TWA in Kansas City. After retirement in 1986, the couple moved to Excelsior Springs, Mo., but spent many of their winters on their land near Rio Hondo, Texas.

Avid travelers, Dale and Etta vacationed in New Zealand, Mexico, and Hawaii, and explored the back roads of America in their RV. Dale enjoyed attending bluegrass festivals and continued to enjoy bluegrass music throughout his life. His other interests included genealogy, reading Westerns, fishing, playing cards and exercising. He was an dedicated member of the local senior exercise group until his final days.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Etta D. Fesenmeyer, and a son, Ronald L. Fesenmeyer.

He is survived by daughter, Linda Jones; sisters, Leona Rubin and Joan Hughes, both of Clarinda; brothers, Gerald Jean and Jerry Paul of Rio Hondo, Texas, and Fred of Eldon, Mo.; two grandchildren, Sarah Herriott of Eureka, Calif., and Aaron Burton of Concord, Calif.; and one great grandchild, Emmett Herriott.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., and the service at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Bross & Spidle Funeral Home, 217 W. Broadway, Excelsior Springs, Mo. Interment will be at the Clarinda, Iowa Cemetery at a later date.

Joseph Patrick Foster “Dusty”, 53, entered into peace on October 15, 2013, at Shenandoah Medical Center, Shenandoah, Iowa following a courageous battle with cancer.

Dusty was born on July 23, 1960, in Clarinda, Iowa to Ronald and Sharon (Yearous) Foster. He grew up in rural Page and Taylor County attending school in New Market until the family moved to Clarinda attending Clarinda Schools and finished his education at South Page when the family moved to the South Page school district.

Dusty was united in marriage, to Lisa Ann Moses on July 30, 1988 in Shambaugh, Iowa. They made their home in Shambaugh with their three children, Amanda, Cody and Brandon.

Dusty often drove truck from coast to coast. While his kids were growing up, Dusty loved taking them along on the road. His favorite driving job was hauling cattle. Dusty was always passionate about fishing and junking. Lisa and Dusty loved spoiling and spending time with their three grandchildren; Gunnar Eli Foster Searl, Jaden Michael Searl, Makenzi Rae Foster.

Dusty is preceded in death by his brother, Dan Foster; maternal grandparents Pat and Darlene (Slaight) Yearous; paternal grandparents, Joe and Hazel (Combs) Foster; nephew, Mark A. Beam, nephew, Justin Daniel Foster, and mother-in-law Barbara Ann Moses.

Helen Dorothy Freudenburg died January 4, 2013 at the Eiler House, Clarinda, Iowa. She was born June 11, 1919 at the family in East River Township, the daughter of Albert Hartstack and Mae (Spielman) Hartstack.

After attending Page County country schools, she graduated from eighth grade and continued to work on the family farm in East River Township. In October 1939 she was baptized and confirmed into the St. John Lutheran Church and participated in Walther League. On February 10, 1943, she married Ralph Freudenburg of Clarinda and moved to his farm east of Clarinda. They had two daughters, Elaine and Thelma. The couple lived on the same farm until just after their 50th wedding anniversary in 1993, when they moved to Garfield Manor 1 in Clarinda. Helen served as secretary-treasurer of the Condo association for several years.

Following Ralph's death in 2000, she stayed at the condo until October 2012 when she moved to Eiler House Assisted Living. She was enjoying her new home until 12-12-12 when she broke her hip in a fall.

Over the years, she was known for her embroidering and cookie baking. She helped the quilts at St. John as long as she was able.

Preceding her in death were her parents; infant brother; husband, Ralph, sister-in-law, Phyllis Hartstack; in-laws, Ruben and Edith Freudenburg, Melvin and Leona Freudenburg.

Survivors include her daughter, Elaine Armstrong and Thelma Graham and her husband Roger; granddaughter, Melinda Shakelford and her husband Tony; twin great granddaughters, Kenzie and Kylie Shackleford; and brother, Dale Hartstack all of Clarinda; nieces; nephews and many friends

Frodsham, Wilma Edith Murren

Wilma Edith Frodsham was born in Montgomery County, Iowa near Villisca, on April 10, 1916 to Oliver Glee "Ollie" and Dora (Schroeder) Murren. She grew up in the North Page neighborhood in northern Page County. Wilma was united in marriage to Harry Edgar "Ed" Frodsham November 10, 1945 at Yuma, AZ. Wilma had moved to California in 1945 to live with an aunt during World War II and met Ed and the couple got married. They returned to Los Angeles to live . Ed's work brought him back to the Los Angeles ship yards. In January 1950 they moved to Cypress, CA where Ed worked at Douglas Aircraft and Wilma at the school cafeteria near Knotts Berry Farm & Disneyland. They were at Cypress for 12 years returning to New Market, IA in 1972 to retire. Wilma was very active in the New Market Methodist Church and the New Market Community Library. She joined the Methodist Church in Villisca at age 16. She graduated Villisca High School and her work outside the home included being a maid and a cook in cafes and school cafeterias.
In August of 2012 she moved to Nebraska to be near her daughter at Fremont. On Wednesday, April 10, 2013 Wilma went to be with her Lord. She was preceded in death by husband Ed in 1996; daughter Carol Lynn and 3 infant daughters; two sisters Roena Reed and Catherin Calhoon; and brother John Murren. Wilma is survived by daughter Lori Frodsham and special friend Duane Dockweiler both of Arlington, NE; grandsons Justin Ridnour and wife Courtney and Jason Ridnour and wife Misty, all of Clarinda; great grandchildren Jacob, Cole, Blakely and Jesalynn Ridnour all of Clarinda; sisters Leona Templeton, Red Oak, IA, Ellen Baker, Kansas City, MO; brothers Oliver Murren, Villisca, IA and Gene Murren, Erie, CO; many nieces and nephews.
