Adams, George Thomas "Tom" Jr

George Thomas (Tom) Adams Jr. was born to George and Al Ena Adams on July 10, 1925 in Wilcox, Missouri. He attended school at Shell Grove Country School and then Horace Mann High School in Maryville, Missouri. He was in the Army Air Corp during World War II as a radio operator on a B-24. After the war, he went to school at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, where he met Ardus Gaffney. They married in 1947 and had three children. In 1960, he received his master's degree at Colorado State College in Greeley and went on to Fonda, Iowa as high school principal. Tom and Ardus raised their family in Fonda and then moved to Lohrville, Iowa in 1976. In their retirement, Tom and Ardus moved to Shenandoah, Iowa in 2004.
Tom adored his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed golfing, square dancing, wood working, traveling and gardening in his spare time. In 1996, Tom and Ardus spent the winter in Pharr, Texas and continued to travel to Texas every winter. Tom loved to play cards and drink coffee with his buddies.

Preceding him in death are his parents, his brother, Jack; his sister, Blanch Elaine; his wife, Ardus, and his daughter, Sheral.

Tom is survived by his sister Dortha (Gordon) of Twin Falls, Idaho; brother John (Mary Jane) of Gladstone, Missouri; son Bruce (Patti) of Shenandoah, Iowa; son Sam (Ellen) of Valparaiso, Indiana; 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews

Mary Jane Adams was born April 6, 1956 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Donald Adams and Lois (Gardner) Adams. She grew up in Clarinda and attended Clarinda schools.

Mary enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, listening to country western music especially Trisha Yearwood and walking. Her greatest enjoyment was playing with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Church of God.

Preceding Mary in death was her father.

Adcock, Marvin Leroy

Marvin Leroy Adcock was born January 12, 1937 in Auburn, Nebraska, the son of Elmer Claude and Hilda Barbara (Bohling) Adcock. He passed away suddenly Saturday evening, May 18, 2013 at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston, Iowa at the age of 76 years, 4 months and 6 days.

Marvin grew up in the rural Auburn, Nebraska area and graduated from Peru High School in 1955. Following high school he served his country for twenty years between the National Guard and Naval Reserves. He also attended the Nebraska Vocational-Technical School in Millford, Nebraska for two years. On August 10, 1958, Marvin was united in marriage to Jacqueline Jean Pebley in Peru, Nebraska. This union was blessed with two children, Don and Dean.

Following his schooling in Milford, Marvin and Jackie moved to Shenandoah. Marvin worked for several businesses in Shenandoah including Hamm’s Hardware, Montgomery Ward, Brownson Tractor and Bird’s Automotive before starting his 22 year career with the Shenandoah Community Schools as a bus mechanic and transportation supervisor.

In 1989, Marvin became the first ward councilman for Shenandoah and served two terms. In 1999, Marvin returned to take the vacated council at large seat. He was re-elected in 2009 and recently announced that he would seek re-election again this November. He was a member of the American Legion, Odd Fellows, Elks Lodge, Eagles and the Chapter P Gold Wing Riders. He enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing, camping, mowing or just riding his motorcycle. He was also an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan. Marvin’s true love was his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Clarence and Grace Pebley and a brother-in-law, Spencer Pebley.

Survivors include his wife Jackie of Shenandoah, Iowa; his two sons, Don Adcock and his fiancé Chris Hansen of Essex, Iowa, Dean Adcock and his wife Chris of Belmond, Iowa; two grandchildren, Emily Adcock of Belmond, Iowa and Steven Adcock of Ames, Iowa; three great grandchildren, Sophia, Emma and Grace; three sisters, Nadine Fahrlander and her husband Phil of Minden, Nebraska, Linda Elze and her husband Michael of Culpepper, Virginia, Barbara Meier and her husband Kevin of Indianola, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Gwen Zeibig and her husband Doug of Steinaur, Nebraska, Sarah Stevicks and her husband Tom of Lincoln, Nebraska; a brother-in-law, Rodney Pebley and his wife Kathy of Peru, Nebraska; along with many other relatives and friends

Alexander, Dorothy Rae Kruse

Dorothy Rae (Kruse) Alexander, daughter of Fredrick Dale and Elda Fern (Moore) Kruse was born on October 24, 1941 in Squires, Missouri. Dorothy entered into eternal rest on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the Golden Rod Care Center in Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 71 years.

Her early life was spent in Ava, Missouri, but the family later moved to Tarkio. One of the most memorable times was when she talked about riding a horse with her daddy to the Tarkio Rodeo. While Dorothy was growing up she was proud to be the leader of the Black Widows, a female gang in Tarkio.

On November 27, 1958, Dorothy was united in marriage to the love of her life, Freddie Leland Alexander at the Congregational Church in Farragut. Following their marriage they resided in Tarkio and Sabetha before moving to Essex. Dorothy had always been a stay at home mom. Cooking, cleaning and taking care of the kids were her top priority. She enjoyed sewing, embroidering, quilting, making doilies and loved collecting baskets. She also had an undying love for genealogy and could talk about her family to anyone and everyone!

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years this November, Freddie; her parents; and a granddaughter Jodi Lynn Meier.

Anderson, Edward Ernest Rose

Edward Ernest Rose Anderson was born August 11, 1935 near Farragut, Iowa, the son of Emil and Ragnhild “Betty” Elizabeth (Lindh) Anderson. He passed away on Monday evening, March 18, 2013 at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 77 years, 7 months and 7 days.
Ed grew up in the Farragut area and graduated from Farragut High School in 1954. Following high school he attended Northwest Missouri State University and then served in the United States Army for two years in Germany. On October 6, 1957 he was united in marriage to Janice Ackerberg in Essex, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children, Richard, Susan, Robert and David.
Ed worked for Safeway Stores for 14 years in Omaha and Shenandoah. He then worked for Eaton Corporation for 25 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Shenandoah, the Kiwanis Club, Elks Lodge, served as a Chamber Ambassador and served one term as a Councilman-at-Large for the City of Shenandoah. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors, bowling, golf and a fan of country music. He also loved the outdoors whether it was camping, golfing or working in his garden at the farm. Ed’s true love was his family and many friends made over many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jean Gidlow and Irene Bird; and a granddaughter, Andrea Needham.

Anderson, Evelyn Ross

Evelyn Anderson, age 95, of Essex, Iowa, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2013, at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 95 years, 3 months and 12 days. She had been a resident of Elm Heights for about 5 years.

Evelyn was born on a cattle ranch in Red Elm, South Dakota, on March 8, 1918, to Howard and Mable (Reynolds) Ross. She grew up on that South Dakota prairie cattle ranch, rode a horse to a one-room school and was involved in music and sports. She graduated from high school at Dupree, South Dakota. In 1943, Evelyn received her B.S. from Iowa State (College) University in Dietetics and was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, a national women’s sorority.

At Iowa State, she met Howard E. Anderson and they were married on February 20, 1946 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After an initial move to Creston, Iowa, she and Howard settled on a crop and livestock farm in Page County where they farmed, worked and raised their family. Evelyn spent most of her 40 year career as a Registered Dietician (RD) at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. She also consulted at nursing homes in Red Oak, Creston, Corning and Villisca.

In retirement, Evelyn enjoyed her circle of friends, her community service groups, drives in the countryside, travel and was an avid fan of sports, especially basketball. She also enjoyed bridge, reading about prairie history and spending summers at the family lake cabin in Minnesota. She loved the lake, trees, birds and spending time there with extended family and friends. Evelyn volunteered her time to many organizations like the Study and Service Club, 4-H and was a member of the Fremont Lutheran Church in Nyman, Iowa. She was a beloved friend to many, including to her white dog she was always seen with. Evelyn’s caring attitude touched the many lives of her circle of friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, husband Howard on October 29, 2005, a son, Steven, and her daughter, Jane.

Evelyn is survived by two sons: Jim Anderson of Essex, Iowa and Mark Anderson of Alexandria, Virginia; other relatives and friends.

A memorial service and celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held on Monday, June 24 at 11:00 a.m at the Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman, Iowa.

Private family burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak.

Visitation and viewing with the family present will be Sunday, June 23, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in Red Oak.

Anderson, Marvis Irene McMullen Bayes

Marvis Irene McMullen was born April 10, 1932 to Walter E. McMullen and Lottie I. (Peek) McMullen in Braddyville, Iowa. The family moved to Clarinda Iowa in 1941. Marvis graduated from Clarinda High School in 1950. She married her high school sweetheart, Richard Bayes, on July 6, 1952. She and Richard traveled while he was in the military settling in Red Oak, Iowa where they began their family of two daughters: Phyllis and Gretchen. In 1963 the family was transferred to Lakewood, Ohio. While residing there Marvis was active in the Girl Scouts, Welcome Wagon, and Eastern Star. Richard passed away in 1975, and she and the girls moved back to Clarinda to be close to family. She began a long career as a sales clerk at Schoenburgs.
Marvis and Ed (Andy) Anderson were married September 19, 1985. With the combination of their children and families they had eight children, twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Marvis and Ed loved the outdoors. They enjoyed feeding and watching birds and squirrels in their backyard. Fishing and camping at Windmill Lake with friends was a favorite pastime. They traveled about the country enjoying the sites and visiting family. Their children brought them much joy as they followed their many activities over the years.
Marvis and Ed loved to garden. Many hours were spent preserving the produce to use throughout the year. There was always a pie in the freezer ready to bake for guests. Marvis was also a great cook and baker. Meals were guaranteed to be homemade and always delicious.
Marvis assisted Ed at Andy’s Radiator and Small Engine Repair shop doing bookkeeping.
Marvis passed away Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Elm Heights Care Center, Shenandoah, IA at the age of 81. She is preceded in death by her parents, and husband Richard.

Arends, Elsie Lundberg

Elsie Arends was born January 16, 1924 in Calumet, Michigan, the daughter of Yalmer (Hjalmar) and Elizabeth Lundberg. She passed away on Thursday morning, December 12, 2013 at Montclair Nursing & Rehab Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 26 days.
She grew up in Calumet and graduated from Calumet High School and later worked as a secretary in Detroit, Michigan, where she met her husband Leonard who was teaching school there. They were married June 17, 1944.
She and her husband Leonard owned and operated Arends TV Center for over 20 years in Shenandoah. The store sold all types of music, instruments and tv’s back in television’s infancy. Elsie also volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, helped with 4-H, PTA and was a long time member of the Eagle’s Auxiliary.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Leonard in 1994; her parents; brothers, Wilbur Lundberg, George Lundberg and Bill Lundberg; sisters, Helen Calley, Betty Chapman, Mae Jeffries and Eleanor Koch; sisters-in-law, Mabel Lundberg, Vida Lundberg, Sylvia Webb, Phyllis Arends, Maureen Arends and Audrey Arends.

Bangston, Paul Dean

Paul Dean Bangston was born on November 17, 1957 in Red Oak, Iowa, the son of Howard and Ardis (Harding) Bangston. Paul entered into the arms of his Lord, on Monday morning, March 4, 2013 at his home in Essex.

Paul's early life was spent on the family farm south of Camp Aldersgate outside of Villisca. He graduated from Villisca High School with the Class of 1976. He later continued his education at Iowa State University where he obtained his Bachelors of Science Degree in Animal Science. On August 8, 1981 he was united in marriage to Marty Kernen in Clarinda, Iowa. The couple made their first home in St. Edward, Nebraska, before moving to an acreage outside of Essex.

Paul work as a Livestock Production Specialist for a Co-op in St. Edwards and the surrounding communities. Upon moving to Essex, he worked for Crestland Co-op in Shenandoah, the Villisca Elevator and most recently the Clarinda Co-op where he worked until he was forced into retirement due to his ALS. The family also raised cows and calves on their farm for the past 30 years.

Paul was an active husband and father. He enjoyed being involved with the Page County Fair, 4-H, the Page County Extension Council, Essex Child Care Board, Beta Theta Pi fraternity at ISU and was a Tarkio Township Trustee. He also enjoyed working on the "chain gang" during Essex football games and was a faithful statistician during basketball and softball seasons in Essex. His greatest joy came from moments shared with his family. He enjoyed watching his children and their friends in sports and activities, working with his children and wife on the farm with their cows, watching westerns and classic tv shows, laughing and spending quality time with friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved dogs Jock, Rocky, Swede, Opie, Zoey, Bo and Biddy. Barnett, Mabel Irene Higgins

Mabel Irene (Higgins) Barnett was born January 25, 1915 in Page County, Iowa to James Marsh Higgins and Maude Mabel (Guthrie) Higgins. She was the first daughter, the 3rd of 7 children with 3 brothers: Harold, Guy and Archie; and 3 sisters: Verla, Ella Mae, and Ruby. She grew up in the rural southwest Iowa, northwest Missouri area with one memorable year spent with her family in Loveland, CO, at age 6. During childhood she enjoyed rural life with special interest in sewing, cooking, reading, playing violin and roller skating.

After graduation from 8th grade, Irene began working various jobs as cook, housekeeper and aid to those in the community who were sick, disabled or just needed extra help. On one such occasion she went to help her neighbors, the Barnett family of rural Braddyville, with cooking and to make bread for them. A few years later on June 14, 1941, she was united in marriage to Arthur Merrill Barnett. She and Arthur continued to live with his family on the family farmstead throughout their married life. They were blessed with 3 children, twin boys Lee Carrol and Lyle Carl, and a daughter, Connie Kay.

Irene worked the farm at Arthur’s side and also spent a few years cooking for the State Hospital in Clarinda. She spent some years cooking and helping at the Braddyville State Line Café which was managed by her son, Lee and his family. After Arthur’s passing, she joined the kitchen team at the senior meal site in Clarinda.

Irene delighted in sewing, gardening, canning, and cooking. Her daily family activities were her joy. She will be fondly remembered for her one-of-a-kind homemade bread which she continued to make from “scratch” until her passing.

As a child, Irene learned of her Savior through her Seventh-Day Adventist maternal grandparents and was baptized in her early married life. She was a devout Christian and faithful member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She is remembered by those who knew her as a giving, gracious person who humbly lived her life for the Lord.

Irene remained on the family farm after Arthur’s passing until 1984. Then she moved to Clarinda where she lived for 10 years. In 1994 she moved to Lincoln, NE where she remained until she fell asleep in Christ on March 14, 2013 at the age of 98.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, sisters, husband, and son Lee and grandson Kent.
She is survived by son Lyle Barnett and wife Gayle of Valley, NE; daughter, Connie Tuckerman and husband David of Lincoln, NE; daughter-in-law Ona Barnett, Mesa, AZ; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, a great-great grandson and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda with interment at Maple Hill Cemetery, College Springs, IA. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the services. Following the committal service a fellowship meal will be served for those who wish to reminisce. Bashor, Rosevelyn Brooks

Rosevelyn (Brooks) Bashor was born August 15, 1924 at New Market, Iowa to James and Inez (Arthur) Brooks.
Rosevelyn graduated from New Market High School in 1942. She was united in marriage May 24, 1942 to Dalphon Bashor. The couple have two children: Ron and Barb.
She and Dalphon enjoyed square dancing with Irvin and Wyleen Miller, and she participated in Eastern Star and was a 50 year plus member. Rosevelyn was a member of the United Methodist Church in New Market and led the singing in the Sunday School and was head of the Sunday School department for many years. She had a lovely singing voice and sang at many weddings and funerals for friends and neighbors. Pitch and bingo were her favorite games. Rosevelyn was an Avon representative for many years. She was an excellent cook, seamstress making prom dresses among other things, and a gardener having tremendous produce during the summer. She was a typical housewife in all respects. She and Dalphon were married 50 years when he passed away in January 2003. Dalphon served in the United States Army and when he was transferred she would follow. Their travels included Texas, Oklahoma, Washington, and Colorado. The Bashors and the Eldon Fine family enjoyed camping and the kids were especially close considering them family. The New Market graduating class remained close and the ladies would go shopping once a month together.
Rosevelyn passed away July 4, 2013 at Clarinda, Iowa. She was preceded in death by husband Dalphon; her parents; parents-in-law Arnold and Mae Bashor; sisters-in-law Shirley Brooks and Beverly Bashor; brothers-in-law Donald Bashor and Dick Graham; and great grandson Nicholas Otte.
She is survived by her children Ron and Edie Bashor of Tucson, Arizona, and Barb and Doyle Otte of Clarinda; brother, Bud Brooks Sierra Vista, Arizona; grandchildren Misty, Krissy, Luke and Chad; sister-in-law Dorlene Graham of New Market, Iowa, Helen Herzberg and husband Ben of Creston, Iowa and Maxine Bashor of Corning, Iowa; brother-in-law Charles Bashor of Clarinda; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2013 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel, Clarinda, with Rev. Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Interment was at Memory Cemetery, New Market. Beery, Phyllis Loy Miller

Phyllis Loy Miller Beery, 88, was born to Glenn Gale and Irma Francele (Loy) Miller on July 21, 1924, near Yorktown. She passed away Feb. 7, 2013, at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda.
Phyllis graduated from Clarinda High School in 1942. She attended the University of Iowa for one year and studied nursing at the University of Nebraska Hospital. She was a clerk at Schoenberg's Ladies Shop before marrying Wendell Hugh Beery on April 28, 1946. After marriage she worked as a bookkeeper at International Harvester in Clarinda and a phone operator in Emerson. In 1950 she and Wendell purchased a farm near Shambaugh, Iowa. They had two children.
Phyllis enjoyed cooking and painting, a hobby she pursued with her mother and sister. She also enjoyed working with the animals on the farm and cultivating a large garden. For many years she worked at the Page County Savings and Loan (now Page County Federal Savings Association), greeting all her customers with a friendly smile. The church and especially the choir were important parts of Phyllis's life, and she often sang solos for worship.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, mother, brother Glenn Charles, husband, and infant grandson.
She is survived by her sister Edith and husband Robert Beery of Clarinda; sister-in-law Carolyn Beery of Clarinda; her son Leslie and wife Ellen Beery of Highland, Calif.; her daughter Melanie and husband Gordon McQuere of Topeka, Kan.; her granddaughter Anna McQuere and fiancé Samer Yahyawi of New York, N.Y.; and granddaughter Sarah and husband Timothy Patterson of Lansing, Mich.; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church with burial following at Butler Cemetery. Visitation with family present were Friday, Feb. 15, from 9 a.m. to service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Presbyterian Church. Beilman, Kathleen Marie Connell

Kathleen Marie Beilman was born to Joseph and Kate (Gleason) Connell of Shenandoah, Iowa on November 16, 1929. Kathleen married Robert F. Beilman at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah, Iowa on November 23, 1954.
Kathleen took great pride in the three children she and Bob raised, dedicating most of her life as a loving mother and homemaker. Later in life she spent numerous years as the officer manager for Western Homestead Mobile Home Manufacture. She was a member of St. John's Nepomuk Catholic Church, Yukon, Oklahoma.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Kate Connell, her husband Robert and brothers, John and Patrick Connell.
Survivors include her children, Bart Beilman and his wife Debbie of Austin, Texas; Lea Ann Beilman of Olney, Maryland; Kit Arthur and her husband Danny of Yukon, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, Callie Baker and Bailee Beilman of Austin, Texas, Robert Cadle, Lizzy Cadle and Conner Beilman of Olney Maryland and Heath, Hayley, Hanna and Hayden of Yukon, Oklahoma; three sisters, Helen Castle, Marilyn Turnbull and Marlene Graham all of Shenandoah, Iowa; two brothers, Charles Connell of Nebraska City, Nebraska and Pete Connell of Missouri, along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Bersch, Ruthella Agnes Marcella Carlson

Ruthella Agnes Marcella (Carlson) Bersch, daughter of Lawrence A. and Anna E. "Ruth" (Hammergren) Carlson was born on December 31, 1922 in Hepburn, Iowa, passed away on February 19, 2013 at the age of 90.

Ruthella was raised on a farm a mile and half southwest of Bethesda, Iowa. She attended a country school through the eighth grade. She moved to Omaha, Nebraska in her early 20's. She was united in marriage to Robert W. Bersch on June 19, 1960 at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bethesda, Iowa. They resided in Omaha, Nebraska. She worked for Butternut Coffee as a coffee bean tester. After retiring in 1970 they moved to Kisse Mills, Missouri. Following the death of Bob, Ruthella moved to Essex, Iowa in 2000.

Ruthella was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, ELCA, and the Quilting Ladies of the Bethesda Lutheran Church. She enjoyed flowers, gardening and crocheting. She also enjoyed dancing, fishing and traveling with her husband Bob.

Ruthella was preceded in death by her husband Robert Bersch; parents Lawrence and Anna "Ruth" Carlson; sisters Henrietta Carlson and Regina O'Malley; and brother Earl Carlson. Those left to cherish her memory include numerous nieces, nephews and cousins

Ruth Mildred Black was born May 7, 1931, in Page County, Iowa to Lewis Glassgow and Violet (Young) Glassgow. She grew up in the New Market area and attended New Market High School in 1949. She was married to Bill Black in June of 1949. They were blessed with two children, Mike and Debbie.
Ruth was a homemaker and she also had worked as secretary/bookkeeper for many years. Ruth was a member of the First Christian Church, Clarinda, Iowa. She enjoyed working on the computer and making greeting cards, camping, riding motorcycles, painting and dancing. Ruth also enjoyed being with her family.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Violet Glassgow; brothers, Leo Glassgow and Robert Glassgow; brother-in-law, Burton Strong; son, Michael Black; grandson, Jeremy Wagoner.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Debbie Black Wagoner and husband Tom of Clarinda, Iowa; grandchildren, Jennifer Goodman and husband Kevin of Irvine, California; Erin Wagoner and husband Ben Kessler of Dover, Delaware; great granddaughter, Makenna Kessler; sister, Jean Strong of Clarinda; brother, Ray Glassgow of Clarinda; nieces; nephews and friends.
Ruth will be missed by her loving family and friends.

Blair, Margaret Eleanor Woods

Margaret Eleanor Blair was born August 15, 1919 in Page County, rural Clarinda, Iowa to Homer and Bessie (McCalla) Woods and departed this life October 21, 2013 in Clarinda, Iowa.
She attended all eight years at the Olive Branch school and graduated from it in 1933 and attended the Clarinda High School and graduated in 1937. She was married to Claude Leroy Blair who preceded her in death May 1986.
She was a lifetime member of the Clarinda Reformed Presbyterian Church. She was baptized at an early age and continued her spiritual journey throughout her life. She was a very active member in her church.
She also worked in the South Page School for a number of years, and did lots of Bible studies with her friends, attended her monthly class luncheons, her “A.M. & P.M.” coffee groups, and did a lot of R.S.V.P. (now Clarinda Area Volunteers C.A.V.) volunteer work in numerous community activities. She also enjoyed going on bus tours and travels. Her hobbies were her family, cooking, embroidery work, and reading.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, husband Claude, brother Melvin, and sister Norma White.
She is survived by her one daughter, Deloris Strong (Roger), Clarinda, Iowa; two granddaughters, Deborah Jean Walker (Kenneth Jr.), Clarinda, IA and Diann Sue Beaver, Omaha, NE; sister Madelyn (Woods) Adams, Darlington, PA; brother-in-law Dr. John White, Beaver Falls, PA; nephews Mel Adams, Huntsville, Alabama, Renwick Adams and wife Norma, Clarinda, IA, Jon Adams and wife Kathy of State College, PA, and Joel Adams, and wife Barbara of Grand Rapids, MI; two nieces, Natalie White Austin and husband of Moon Township, PA and Stephanie White and family of Beaver Falls, PA; great nieces and nephews; cousins and families and a host of friends and their families.

Kenneth Wayne Bloom was born April 25, 1920, on the family farm near Northboro, to Clyde & June (Henderson) Bloom. He grew up in Northboro area attending West Point country school and graduated from Northboro High School. After graduation he worked by the month for a neighbor.
On August 3, 1942, Kenny married his high school sweetheart Barbara Lair. In November he was called to the army and served as a quartermaster in Salina, Kansas. Upon his return from the army Kenny farmed with his father northeast of Northboro until purchasing his own farm east of College Springs. He and Barbara were blessed with three children, Lynn, Mickie and Jo.
Kenny lived most of his life on that farm. Besides farming, he also worked at various other jobs including Bishop Tank Company, Kearney Corporation, K.W. Ripley Lumber and Trucking and Hartstack Trucking.
Throughout his life, Kenny enjoyed his 5 generation family, and also playing cards, shooting pool, riding motorcycles and horses, camping, fishing and church activities. He was an active member of the Methodist churches in Northboro, College Springs, and Shambaugh.
In 2010, Kenny and Barb moved off the farm they had lived on for 65 years.
Kenny was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and June Bloom; his 27 year old daughter, Michaelyn June (Bloom) McClarnon; grandsons, David Kyle McClarnon, age 26 and Matthew Craig McClarnon, age 5; sister, Dorothy (Bloom) Merryman and brother-in-law, Miles Merryman.

Bonnes, Agnes Grue

Agnes Grue Bonnes was born October 25, 1914 in Miles City, Montana, the daughter of Carl and Cecilie (Martinsen) Grue. She passed away on Monday morning, February 18, 2013, at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 98 years, 3 months and 24 days.
Agnes moved to Omaha as a child and graduated from Benson High School in 1932. Following high school she attended the Van Sant Business School and one year at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in the home economics department. She worked for Woodmen of the World for four years. On April 2, 1938 she was united in marriage to William H. Bonnes in Omaha, Nebraska. This union was blessed with 5 children; Henry, Stanley, Ruth Ann, Oran and Mary.
In 1938, Bill and Agnes moved to Shenandoah where she had a very active life. She loved music. She directed the children’s youth choir at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, played the organ for the Community of Christ Church and taught piano lessons for over 40 years. At one time, Agnes had 62 piano students a week that she taught. She did this and raised her five children without indoor plumbing until 1966. She also owned and operated the Hilltop Health Food Store from 1971 until 2010. She loved her organic gardens and was a 70 year member of the Happy Homemaker Neighborhood Club. She was also a member of the Toast Masters Club in Shenandoah, the Fremont County Farm Bureau, the Fremont County Historical Society and Shenandoah Historical Museum, and was an active member of the Community of Christ Church in Shenandoah.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her children, Ruth Ann Bonnes in 1954, Oran Fredric Bonnes in 1994, Henry Marvin Bonnes in 2009; a brother, Charles Grue in 2001 and a granddaughter, Corie Lane Bonnes in 1972.
Survivors include her children, Stanley Bonnes and his wife Jan of Columbia, Missouri, Mary Cecilie Brass and her husband Gene of Lincoln, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren, Todd, Tami, Tara, Tasha, Tiane, Heather, Holly, Heidi, Jason, Jared, Trevor and Brianna; 21 great grandchildren; along with many other relatives and friends

LaDonna Brown, 83, formerly of Clarinda, died August 25th at Wesley Acres in Des Moines. LaDonna was born in Page County to Louis and Edna (Hartstack) Harms. She married Arnold Brown on October 21, 1949. They farmed in Page County and she also worked 20 years at Lisle Corp. LaDonna is survived by her husband, brother LaVern Harms of Shambaugh, daughter Joy (Rick) Nielsen of Cleghorn, sons, Eldon (Kathy) Brown of Overland Park, KS, and Roger (Rosanne) Brown of Des Moines, and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarinda at 1:30 pm, September 1, with visitation to follow from 2:30 to 3:30. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St John Church or the Clarinda Public Library where she volunteered

Brush, Donna Rae Taylor

Donna Rae (Taylor) Brush, 81, of Jacksonville, IL and formerly of Scottsbluff, NE and Shenandoah quietly passed away in her sleep Friday evening, June 21, 2013 at Heritage Health in Jacksonville.

Born December 12, 1931 in Scottsbluff, NE; the daughter of Ernest Neal and Ethel E. (Carlson) Taylor (both deceased), she grew up in Scottsbluff and graduated high school with the class of 1950. She was active in the Nebraska chapter of Job's Daughters, and her love of animals, especially horses, spurred her involvement in the Scottsbluff Saddle Club. Donna Rae liked to ride an English style saddle and had a fondness for five-gated horses. Although she never competed, Donna Rae loved the pageantry of the rodeo and presided as Queen of the Rodeo one year. She was united in marriage to Milo Orion Brush Jr. on October 7, 1956 in Scottsbluff, NE. He preceded her in death on May 3, 1999.

Donna Rae took great pride in family, was a dedicated and loving mother to her three children, and enjoyed corresponding with family and long-time friends. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Chapter F.C. of P.E.O. in Scottsbluff, hospital volunteer, and involved in many other local clubs and organizations.

She is survived by a daughter, Milene (Brush) Paulus and husband Richard of Jacksonville; two sons, Eric Brush of Iowa City, IA and Scott Brush and wife Nicole of Chanhassen, MN; five grandchildren, Nathan and Ryan Paulus of Jacksonville and Aaron, Matthew, and Joseph Brush of Chanhassen, MN; a sister, Louise Yost and husband John of Scottsbluff, NE; and two nieces, Susan (Yost) Bosche and husband Chris of Scottsbluff, NE and Amber (Yost) Epp and husband Russell of Madison, WI, several cousins and a wonderful circle of friends.

Bonnie May Bunting was born on September 28, 1922 in Clarinda, Iowa; a daughter to Charles Ralph and Ola May (Berry) Taylor. She graduated from Clarinda High School and on August 8, 1942 was married to Leland Keith Bunting in Shambaugh. This union was blessed with two children: Charles and Janice.
Bonnie was an active member in the Church of God in Shambaugh. She was loving and dedicated to her family, church and community. She will be greatly missed.
Bonnie passed away at the age of 90 years and 8 months on May 21, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Maryville, Missouri. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Leland; brothers: John Taylor and Henry Taylor and sisters: Jane Scroggs, Wanda Taylor and Ruby Taylor.
Surviving Bonnie are her children: Charles Bunting and wife Deb of Shambaugh, IA and Janice Goettsche of Braddyville, IA; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters: Peggy Burkehart and husband Joe of Bellevue, NE and Hazel Sunderman and husband Norman of Plattsmouth, NE; brothers: Ralph Taylor and wife Marsha of Phoenix, AZ and Jim Taylor and wife Robin of Littleton, CO; devoted friend and caregiver Roy Eberly of Ogilvie, Minnesota; along with many extended family members and friends.

Burch, Gilbert Andre'

Funeral services for Gilbert Burch, age 73, of Braddyville, who entered into peace Sunday, Sept. 29 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Omaha, Neb., was held 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 3 at Clearmont Baptist Church, Clearmont, Mo. with Don Barnett and John Clayton officiating. Visitation with the family was held 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda. Burial was in the Braddyville Cemetery, Braddyville. Memorials may be directed to Braddyville Fire and Rescue or to the Clearmont Baptist Church Building Fund.
Gilbert Andre’ Burch was born December, 14, 1939 at Maryville, Mo. to Maynard Burch and Ioma (Fishell) Burch. He grew up in the Braddyville area and graduated from Braddyville High School and continued his education attending Taylor University in Indiana. Gilbert and Karon Troxel were united in marriage in 1975.
Gilbert’s life revolved around the church and his Lord. He accepted him into his heart in the 8th grade during a trip to South Bend, Ill. He was blessed with a beautiful voice and his devotion to the Lord was expressed through his ministry to others in deeds, words and song. He assisted in building the Baptist Church in Clearmont and had recently devoted his time to rebuilding the church. His witnessing through song began early. He was in a quartet with his grandfather, Mose, and father, Maynard. He was in the Methodist Men’s Choir and Quartet, the singing group with the Christian Church, quartets at Clearmont Baptist and sang for hundreds of funerals over the years with his mother, Ioma, accompanying on the organ. He sang until the hour before he passed to go to his Lord.
Gilbert was a man of many skills and talents; foremost being a farmer. He was a skilled craftsman, able to fix or build just about anything. He spent most of his life farming on the family farm, but also spent a few years driving a truck and 5 years building windows at Pella Corporation in Shenandoah. Gilbert was instrumental in building of the Clearmont Baptist Church and during the last two years rebuilding the church after a fire. He also donated much time and effort to helping maintain the Braddyville Post Office. Regardless of the task, he was a craftsman. If he didn’t already know how to do it, he learned.
Gilbert was a people person who truly enjoyed helping others, whether it involved using his skills as a craftsman or counseling a friend in need. Everyone knew they could "call Gilbert" and no matter what was needed, he would be there. Gilbert was easy to talk to, someone who could keep a confidence and always seemed to know just what to do to help. Family and friends were very important to him. He always made the time to listen and to help.
He was never happier than when his family was gathered around him. Gilbert always said that a lot of families get together out of obligation, but our family actually enjoys each other and we seek out opportunities to spend time together. We aren’t a quiet group but we are a loving group. In the intensive care unit, he instructed the nursing staff that he was most at peace with his family in the room with him, despite their reservations.
He felt his work here wasn’t done. He was concerned about the completion of the church and the times he was looking forward to with his family. Though we weren’t ready for him to leave us, he rested in the will of the Lord and put his life in the hands of his Lord.
Preceding Gilbert in death were his parents and grandson, Scott Andre’ Burch.

Burks, Betty L. Hendrickson

Betty L. Burks of Chandler, Arizona died peacefully Sunday May 12, 2013, at Friendship Village, Tempe, Arizona after a two-year battle with cancer, having lived in her home all but the last week of her life.

Betty was born in Hepburn, Iowa on July 14, 1930 the daughter of Elmer and Ebba (Bengsten) Hendrickson. When Betty was six years old her family moved to Essex, Iowa where she finished her education. She later married Donald D. Clarke of Red Oak, Iowa. After their divorce she married Edward E. (Gene) Burks of Bedford where they raised three children: Chris, Dee and Doug.

While in Bedford, Gene and Betty enjoyed playing golf, managing the Lake of Three Fires and raising their children. In 1990 Gene and Betty retired to Chandler, Arizona where they maintained an active lifestyle and resided until their passing.

Betty is survived by her three children: Chris (Phil) Wise of Des Moines, Ia, Dee (Gordon) Lee of Chandler, Az, Doug (Sue) Burks of Decorah, Ia; her five grandchildren Todd (Beth) Wise of Cedar Rapids, Ia, Jason (Becky) Lee of Yorkville, Ill, Carmen Lee (Kieran) McEnery of Chandler, Az, Meredith Burks of New York City, NY, and Courtney Burks of Iowa City, Ia; six great grandchildren; Ethan and Callista Wise (Todd), Xavier, Xander and Froska Lee (Jason), and Cliona McEnery (Carmen) and many nephews and nieces. Also left to cherish her memories are her sister Pauline Miller of Shenandoah, Ia, her brother Earl (Betty) Hendrickson of Essex, Ia and her special friend Don Maxwell of Chandler, Az.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gene, three sisters Lillian Miller, Irene Swanson and Marjorie Brinker, and a brother Raymond Hendickson.

Graveside services at the Bedford, Iowa Cemetery will be scheduled at a later date.

Randy Butt was born October 20, 1953 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Kenneth William Adam and Jacquelyn Delores (Bangs) Butt. He passed away on Friday morning, April 5, 2013 at his home in Shambaugh, Iowa at the age of 59 years, 5 months and 15 days.
Randy grew up in the Northboro area and attended school through the fourth grade. His family then moved to College Springs and he attended school in Braddyville through the sixth grade. Randy attended Jr. High and High School at South Page and graduated from South Page High School in 1972. On August 16, 1974 he was united in marriage to Carol Yaple and they were blessed with a son, Greg. He was a carpenter his entire working life starting out working for John Bayless in Shenandoah and eventually having his own company. He enjoyed cooking, especially grilling and smoking meat. His true love was spending time with his family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services for Thaine Cabbage, age 77, of Clarinda, who entered into peace Friday, Feb. 8 at Bryan East LGH, Lincoln, Nebraska, was held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda with Russ Clark officiating. Thaine Mason Cabbage was born Sept. 27, 1935, the son of Orval Cabbage and Clara (Mason) Cabbage. He was born in the East River Township near Clarinda. Thaine graduated from New Market High School in 1954. He was married to LaDonna Pratt on May 22, 1954; this union was blessed with four children. They were later divorced and he married Marcia Eleanor Williams. Thaine and Eleanor made their home in Clarinda.
Thaine was a dedicated agri-business man, devoting most of his career serving the New Market and Clarinda area. He began his career with owning a portable feed grinder and grinding for area farmers which led to ownerships and management in Clarinda Elevator and Coin Grain. Thaine finished his career in partnership with his son Rick as co-owners of the Clarinda Feed Service.
Thaine's favorite past time was his love for his horses. He began pulling horses as a very young boy. This was a passion that he shared with his father Orval and passed down to his children and grandchildren. His horses were very personal to him. In later years, he pulled ponies and then draft horses. Some pulling accomplishments include winning the nationals in 1973 and winning the Iowa State Fair several times; his favorite team of ponies, Danny and Doc, was unbeaten for at least five years. Second only to his love for horses, was a shared love with his family for Nebraska Football. Go Big Red!!
Thanie was preceded in death by his parents, Orval Cabbage and Clara Mason Cabbage; sister, Carol Cabbage Thornburg and her husband Sergeant Vincent Thornburg and brother Keith Cabbage; brothers-in-law, Lester Williams and Joe Williams; sister-in-law, Ailene Williams (Joe's wife); father and mother-in-law Mason and Izola Williams and step grandson, Mason Fugle.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia Eleanor Williams Cabbage of Clarinda; his children, Gail Cabbage Eitzen and husband Gerald of Clarinda, Steve Cabbage and wife Renay of New Market, Kevin Cabbage and wife Shelly of Stanton, and Rick Cabbage and wife Jolene of New Market; step children, Jack Fugle of Springfield, Missouri, Randy Fugle of Villisca; seventeen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; brother, Don Cabbage and wife Marilyn of Bradenton, Florida; sister, Janet Cabbage McClarnon of Charlotte, North Carolina; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Caddy, Max

Max Caddy, 66, of Gretna, Nebraska, formerly of Glenwood entered into rest at the Ashland Care Center, Ashland, Neb. from complications of Huntington’s Disease.
Max Clarence Caddy was born Feb. 25, 1947, in Loup City, Neb. to Clarence and Mary (Eiche) Caddy. He grew up on the family farm outside of Loup City. Max attended Catholic School and then graduated from Loup City High School in 1965. He continued his education at a Mechanical Tech School in Omaha. Max later served his country honorably in the Army National Guard for seven years in Nebraska City.
Max married Sue Vacek in 1972. They were blessed with four children, Robin, Jason, Jenny and Mindy. They lived in Omaha and later made their home in Glenwood. Max then married Penny Mason Thomas in 1981 and they were blessed with one child, Kristie. Max was united in marriage November 9, 1996 to Maureen Williams Crawford.
Max made his career as a home builder specializing in custom homes. He owned and operated his own company, Caddy Homes, based in Glenwood.
Max had a great love of cars, Ford trucks and especially his children and grandchildren. He was a great story teller and loved to reminisce about the orneriness of his youth.
Max was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Caddy; sister, Kathy Caddy; brothers-in-law, Thaine Cabbage, Joe Williams and Lester Williams and sister-in-law, Ailene Williams.

Cade, John Bruce

Funeral services for John Cade, age 63, of Shenandoah, formerly of New Market, who entered into peace Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Neb., was held 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 25 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda with Rev. John Bruce Cade, a son, of Dona (Foster) and Verlin O. Cade was born July 8, 1950 in the Clarinda Municipal Hospital. He passed away in the Nebraska Medical Center Nov. 20, at the age of 63.
John’s first months of life were spent fighting respiratory infections. He was taken to the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. where he was later diagnosed as having Down Syndrome. A group of parents of special needs children including John’s parents with the help of the County Superintendent was able to start a school for special needs children in Yorktown. John was happy and proud to go to school. He attended Yorktown School for 12 years. He transferred to Opportunity Village where he competed in Special Olympics and earned several medals, participated in the bell choir, worked in the greenhouse and snack bar, and later worked in a sheltered workshop at Eagle Grove.
At the time of his death he resided at the Nishna Productions Group Home in Shenandoah. He loved to do latch hook, needlework and crafts, etc. Despite physical challenges, he always kept busy. His family is just beginning to realize the impact he had on their lives.
John was preceded in death by his grandparents, Fred and Alta Foster and Ora and Jenny Cade and his father, Verlin Cade.

Carlson, Marvis Irene Parker

Marvis Irene (Parker) Carlson, formerly of Essex, Iowa passed away peacefully on November 17, 2013 at the age of 93 in Norman,
Oklahoma. She was born on Feb. 4, 1920 in Essex, Iowa to Clarence W. and Phoebe V. (Johnson) Parker.

Marvis graduated Essex High School and the American Business College in Omaha, Nebraska. She used her skills and worked for several local businesses.

She met the love of her life in high school and was united in marriage to Cecil J. Carlson on June 8, 1941. They raised three sons of which she was very proud.

Marvis and Cecil owned and operated three lumberyards in southwest Iowa. After selling the lumberyards, they moved to Tucson, Arizona where she obtained her realtor's license. Throughout her life she was active in the Evangelical Covenant Church in both Essex and Tucson. She taught Sunday school, played the piano, sang in the choir and participated in various women's' groups. Marvis also enjoyed playing golf and bowling. She continued to play golf up until a few years ago. Another favorite activity was genealogy. She spent countless hours researching, corresponding, traveling and documenting her family history. Marvis was able to trace her family history back to Sweden in the 1700's. She also enjoyed knitting and made numerous Afghans, scarves and sweaters for her family. Marvis enjoyed preparing delicious Swedish dishes, pies and cookies.

She is preceded in death by her parents and sister. Survivors include her husband, Cecil, of Norman, sons, Gerald Carlson and wife Barbra,

Alan Carney, 74, of Macon, MO, passed away Monday, November 11, 2013, at the Neighborhoods Rehabilitation Center in Columbia, MO.
Al was born on April 15, 1939, in Shenandoah, IA, the son of Harry R. and Maxine Moody) Carney. He was united in marriage to Sharon Boshart in Upland, CA on March 7, 1964. Along with his wife, Al was the owner and operator of Carney Funeral Chapel in Macon, Bevier and Callao for many years. He was a member of the Macon United Methodist Church, Macon Rotary Club, Elks Club, and Macon Country Club. Al also enjoyed golfing, traveling and spending time with his family.
Alan is survived by his wife Sharon of the home, two children, Michelle Caszatt and husband Eric of Columbia, MO, Blair Carney and wife Joanna of Apex, NC; five grandchildren, Gage Caszatt of Mobile, AL, Joshua and Matthew Caszatt of Columbia, Bryson and Landon Carney of Apex, NC and several nieces , nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by parents and one sister Sharon Mealey.
Funeral services will be Friday November 15, 2013, at 10:00 am at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Macon with Reverend Julius Ketsenburg officiating. Cary, Valera Maxine Hartstack

Valera Maxine Cary, 89, passed away Sunday June 16, 2013 at Westridge Quality Care and Rehab. Valera was born to William John and Esther Marie (Jaebker) Hartstack on August 14, 1923. She grew up on the Hartstack family farm in Douglas Township and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1941. She was married to George Wayne Cary on February 14, 1942.

Preceding Valera in death were her parents, husband, George Wayne Cary, brother Erwin Hartstack and sister Phyllis Taylor.

Valera is survived by a sister, Paula Savage of Omaha, Nebraska, daughter, Connie Miller of Shawnee, Kansas and son, Ron, of Louisville, Kentucky. Her grand children are Joshua Cary, Louisville, Kentucky, Megan Lobe of Smyrna, Georgia, Kelly Peterson, and Sean Peterson both of Kansas City. She is also survived by 4 great grand children.

Valera was known for her devotion to family and friends through good times and difficult challenges but always remained steadfast in her Christian faith. She worked side by side with her husband on their rural Clarinda farm in early years, moving to Clarinda in retirement and enjoyed many travels across the country and world where life long friendships were forged. Her family and friends cherished her hospitality, visits and baking, knowing freshly made "chip chocolate" cookies would always be ready in the cookie jar.

The family would like to extend graditude to the staff of Westridge Quality Care and Rehab, Clarinda Regional Health Center and Overland Park Regional Medical Center for the wonderful care extended to Valera in the last months of her life.

A visitation will be held Friday, June 21, 2013 from 5pm - 7pm at Ritchie Funeral Home in Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at Mt. Casten, Shirley Jean Mullison

Shirley Jean Casten of Clarinda slipped quietly away to her heavenly home on Aug. 2, 2013, Originally from Shenandoah, Shirley was born on Oct. 2, 1928 to Bernice (Adams) and Orval Mullison. Mrs. Casten graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1947 and then attended UNO.
In 1953 Shirley married H. J. (Doc) Casten and they had resided in Cedar Rapids for nearly 50 years. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Casten moved to Clarinda to be near family.
Shirley is survived by two children, John (Jane) Kovarik of Gladstone, Mo., and Ms. Terri Polick of Bryantown, Md. She was the proud grandmother of five grandchildren, Jessica, Joanna, and Jake Kovarik, Danielle and Coty D’Aleo and a great-grandson, Jack Dunagan. Also surviving are brothers Dick (Ardene) Mullison of Casper, Wyo., Chuck Lynn of Morgan Hill, Calif., Jerry (Betty Ruth) Lynn of Fredericksburg, Va., and one sister, Sue (Chuck) Schaub, of Bedford.
Preceding her in death were her husband, H. J. (Doc) Casten, parents, Orval Mullison, Bernice and Elbert Lynn, and sister, Betty Lynn Gregory.
Graveside services will be held at a later date in Morning Sun, Iowa. Suggested memorials would be the Clarinda Foundation or Heartland Hospice of Red Oak.

Chambers, Harold Eugene


Harold Eugene Chambers was born on October 26, 1924 in rural Shenandoah, the son of Athol and Velda Haskett Chambers. Eugene passed away November 24th, 2013 at Bickford Cottages in Omaha, Ne.

Eugene lived his entire life in the Shenandoah area and attended the Shenandoah schools; graduating from high school in 1942. He did not need to attend college as he began his banking career at the City National Bank in 1944. He retired from the bank in 1988 after 44 years as a bookkeeper, teller and vice president making real estate loans and in charge of operations and personnel. He was also executive secretary of the Home Building and Loan Association from 1956 to 1972 making many local real estate loans.

In past years Gene was very active in the First Baptist Church in the 1960's and 70's. Eugene was financial secretary of the church for many of those years and then church treasurer for some years after that. He and his wife led the BYF group of young people for some time too. He was a member of the Shenandoah Jaycees and president of the Southwest Iowa Bankers Association in the early 1970's. He served on the board of the Greater Shenandoah Historical Society for 12 years after retiring from the bank and was treasurer of the society for five of those years.

Eugene married the love of his life, Talma Berniece Bennett, on February 8, 1946. To this union three children, Larry, Greg, and Becky were born. They enjoyed the life long dream of designing and building their home where Eugene served as general contractor. They also loved to travel and took many trips and tours after his retirement. He lost Talma in the year 2000 after 54 years together.

In 1965 the Chambers family had the honor of hosting an exchange student, Wolfgang Schmidt, from Germany. This began a life long relationship as Wolfgang was able to return for many visits and Eugene traveled to Germany in September 2000.

At home Gene was famous for making fudge and peanut brittle at Christmas time. Friends always started reminding him about the peanut brittle long before Christmas. He also enjoyed a daily visit to the Donut Stop and chatting with his friends each morning. Eugene frequently attended local auctions and sales and made an occasional trip to the casinos.

In recent times, he was a co-trustee in the Ivan and Caroline Wilson Memorial Trust Fund which was set up for the perpetual benefit of the residents of Shenandoah. He was also on the board of trustees of the Merry Louise Gidley Scholarship Fund.

In the last months Eugene was honored with several get-togethers when he celebrated his 89th birthday. He was able to spend time with the majority of his family, including Wolfgang, where he shared his wish for each of them to "Be Happy".

Eugene's oldest son, Larry Gene Chambers, was killed in an auto accident December 22, 2009. His only sister, Inamae Clipston, preceded him in 2009.

Chambers, Margaret L. Racine

Margaret L. Chambers, the daughter of William G. and Anna Pearl (Caudle) Racine was born September 2, 1918 in Shenandoah, Iowa. Margaret attended the Lone Rock Country School in rural Shenandoah.

On November 20, 1937 Margaret was united in marriage to James Maxwell Chambers in Hiawatha, Kansas. They made their home in the Westboro, Missouri area their entire married life and became the parents of nine children. Jim passed away June 20, 1989. In 2008, Margaret moved to Tarkio where she lived to the present time. Margaret passed away Friday, July 12, 2013, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 94.

Margaret sold Avon for numerous years, was also a waitress at the Elks Club in Shenandoah and was employed by her daughter, Janice, at Ladies Apparel, Shenandoah, for 12 years. She made many return customers and long-time friends while working these jobs, retiring at the age of 85.

Margaret was a member of the Westboro United Methodist Church. She loved spending time with her family, dancing, attending softball games and crocheting. Margaret made pies for the Lord’s Acre Day until she was 90, was energetic and the “best mom ever”.

Besides her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by sons, Leo and Max Chambers, four brothers George, Wayne, Clarence and Roy Racine, and two sisters Blanche Flynn and Pearl Waldron. Survivors include children; Denton Chambers and his wife, Shirley, Tarkio, Charlene Sparks, Lindon, Utah, Sharon Fox and her husband, Ron, Shenandoah, Shirley Poore and her husband, Allen, Scottsdale, Arizona, Betty Poptanycz, Scottsdale, Jimmie Chambers and his wife, Karla, Westboro, and Janice Hunkins and her husband, Ed, Tarkio; grandchildren, Diana (Craig) Hedrick, Darrin (Lizzie) Chambers, Jeff (Melinda) Chambers, Jason (Lorie) Chambers, Bryan (Kim) Sparks, Brenda (Mel) Renslow, Brad (Kim) Sparks, Stephanie (Jamie) Todd, Angela (Sean) Levkoff, Jessica Poore, Jamie (Howard) Jeffers, Nic Poptanycz, Kelly (Wade) Rellergert, Ashely Poptanycz, Gabe Poptanycz, Danny (Keri) Chambers, Holly Gray, Travis (Stephanie) Chambers and Garrett Hunkins; 40 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

Jake William Champ was born May 23, 1989 in Red Oak, to Kevin Lyon Champ and Valerie Jo (Hobbs) Champ. He grew up in Bedford and later moved to Clarinda in the fifth grade, later graduating from Clarinda High School in 2007. After high school, Jake moved to Colorado with a group of close friends and worked for Titan Machinery as a diesel mechanic. He returned to Clarinda in May, 2012, and was employed by his father at Champ Automotive as a mechanic and welder. In July, 2013, Jake found a new passion in being a father to his new born daughter, Tyler Ann.
Jake enjoyed life and having a good time. He lived by the quote "Stop worrying about life after death, concentrate on living before you die" and he really was a walking example of how to do that. He had a great sense of humor and a good outlook on life, he was so fun to be around. Jake was committed to his friends; he was forgiving and accepting. He felt a great sense of loss with the death of his best friend Matt Samo. Jake had a spirit of adventure, always finding something exhilarating to do; many times he would jump off of bridges or cliffs. He would always find a way to make things happen, instead of making an excuse about why he couldn’t or shouldn’t do something he wanted to do. Jake enjoyed water sports, riding ATVs, and recently tried surfing with his brother, Cliff, in Hawaii. Jake was passionate about anything with a motor, he loved to help his brother, Kenny, with his race car. He enjoyed listening to classic rock music and attending concerts with his friends.

Christensen, Charles Lee

Charles Lee Christensen was born on August 24, 1947 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Lavern and Elizabeth (Woods) Christensen. Charles entered into eternal peace on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the Clarinda Regional Medical Center.

Charles attended school in Imogene through the 8th grade. He lived in many different places during his lifetime including Guthrie Center, Imogene, Carson, California and most recently in College Springs. He worked for 3 C's Auto Wrecking from 1965 until 1993, as an auto dismantler and in sales. He later became self-employed until his retirement in 2012. He enjoyed CB Radios and computers.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Those left to honor his memory include his brothers Eugene Christensen and wife Gwen of Olean, MO, Bill Christensen and wife Jan of Malvern, AR; special friend Sonny; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services for Danny Clary, age 68, of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Hospice With Heart, Glenwood, Iowa, will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Kris Davies officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 5-7 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2013 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa with military rites by American Legion Sergy Post 98. A memorial will be established. Danny Lee Clary was born January 30, 1945 in Clarinda, Iowa to Cedric E. Clary and Delores M. (Johnson) Clary. He grew up in Clarinda and attended Clarinda High School. He spent his entire life in Clarinda with the exception of his tour of duty in the United States Army from August 1965 to August 1967.

Danny's working career started early when he worked as a youth at the local movie theater. In 1965 he was inducted into the Army, his tour of duty was spent in Germany. After his release from the Army he had various jobs, bartending at the Inda-Clar for several years and then starting up his own painting business. He also laid carpet and wallpapered. He eventually discovered cooking was his passion and he began managing the AmVet's Club as a restaurant and bar for eight years. In 1998 he started another career with the Missouri Department of Corrections at the Maryville Treatment Center, Maryville, Missouri as a cook. He retired in 2010, after 12 years of service.

Danny enjoyed life and had many varied interests and hobbies. In his earlier years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid coin collector, and also collected a variety of unique medicine bottles. He also liked to collect unusual clocks. He loved flea markets, garage sales, and second-hand stores. He was always looking for "treasures." Danny's real love was his vegetable and flower gardens. He took a lot of pride in his gardening and did a lot of canning in the fall. He loved to be in the outdoors, whether it be working in the garden, mowing the yard, or camping.

In his leisure hours he also enjoyed going to the casinos, horse races, and dog races.

Preceding Danny in death were his parents and grandparents.

Danny is survived by his sister, Patricia Gray-Roberts and husband Randell of Glenwood, Iowa and uncle, Wayne Johnson and wife Lois of Clarinda, Iowa and many friends

Clayton, Donald Eugene

Graveside services for Donald Clayton, age 87, of New Market, Iowa, who entered into peace October 30, 2013 at Goldenrod Manor , Clarinda, Iowa, will be held 12:00 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa with Reverend Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Family and friends will gather 11:00 a.m. at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa to procede to the gravesite. Burial will be in the Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to New Market Methodist Church.

Donald Eugene Clayton was born May 22, 1926 and he died October 30, 2013. His parents were Floyd and Vera (Woldruff) Clayton of New Market, Iowa. Donald was born at Siam, Iowa; he attended grade school at Siam and graduated from New Market Iowa High School. He entered the United States Navy in May 1944 and served in World War II aboard the air craft carrier USS Commencement Bay. Don graduated from Clarinda Community College and also graduated from the Iowa State Patrol. He worked in law enforcement with Iowa State Patrol for two years. He then worked in the insurance business; Don was Vice President and Manager of American Mutual and Midwest American Mutual Insurance Company in Des Moines, Iowa. Later Don managed the Reliance Insurance Company, Crop Hail Office in Omaha, Nebraska. Following that, he worked for Old Republic Insurance Company of Chicago, Illinois for ten years. He then returned to the Clayton farm near New Market, Iowa and resided with his mother until she went to the nursing home. Don continued farming and retired from the insurance business in 1988. He enjoyed raising and feeding cattle and taking care of his pets.

Don was a fifty year member of the Masons, fifty year member of Scottish Rite Free Masons of Des Moines, fifty year member of Za Ga Zig Shrine of Altoona, Iowa and life time member of Shrine’s Children Hospital of Minneapolis, Minnesota, a member of the New Market American Legion and a member of the New Market Methodist Church.

Preceding Don in death were his parents.

Clemens, Mary Louise Desh

Mary Louise (Desh) Clemens went home to heaven to be with her Savior, Friday morning, June 7, 2013. She was currently residing at Lamoni Nursing and Rehab Center. Mary passed away quietly in her sleep, with her daughter Rosella, and son-in-law Monte at her side.

Mary was born in Shenandoah, Iowa on March 24, 1937, grew up in Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1955. She worked for one year at the Driftmeyer Co. and married Charles (LeRoy) Clemens in 1956. She and her husband resided in Council Bluffs, Iowa for two years and while there, their daughter, Rosella was born.

She worked as a proof-reader for her father V.A. (Bid) Desh until the mid-1980's. She also cleaned houses for a few Shenandoah residents and attended Iowa Western Community College later in life.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Charles L. Clemens, parents V.A. and Julia Mabel (Manley) Desh, grandchild Charity Rose, sister Joan Ruth (Desh) Green, and brother, Robert Edwin Desh.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Rosella (Clemens) Johnson and husband Monte, granddaughter Chelsea (Johnson) Holmes and husband David and grandson Philip Johnson. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Pat Desh, brother-in-law Ronnie Green and many nieces and nephews

Collins, Lillian "Billie" Johnson

Lillian "Billie" Johnson Collins died Friday, April 5, 2013 at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.

Born in Erie, Pennsylvania on September 13, 1928 to Joseph and Kathryn Fullerton Johnson, Billie's parents moved around the country living in Fort Myers, Florida, Mammoth Springs, Arkansas and Willow Springs, Missouri. She attended school in Mammoth Springs and in willow Springs. Billie married Herman Collins on October 3, 1945 in West Plains, Missouri. Billie and Herman resided in Willow Springs, Missouri where they had their only daughter, Deanna in July 1946. When Deanna was entering her fifth grade of school, Billie started working at Rawlings Sporting Goods Co. and she was active in the Rebekah Lodge in Willow Springs. Following Billie and Herman's divorce in l975, Billie moved to Shenandoah, Iowa. She was briefly married to Ross Collins. Billie worked in home health care for twenty-five years in the Shenandoah region. She was a passionate, caring, home care provider. She treasured her numerous patients and friends. Reading, needlework, gardening, travel tours and her special little poodle, Princess were among her favorite activities. Billie was usually busy caring for someone who was too ill to care for themselves.

In addition to her daughter, Deanna Corn, Columbia, Missouri, survivors include her grandson, Russell Allan Corn and his wife, Poonnasa Corn, St. Louis, Missouri, her brothers, Charles and Joe Jr., state of California and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by former sister-in-law Bettie and Dwain Dobbs and their daughter, Jennifer, Shenandoah and special care-taker friends, Sue and Ron Johnson, Shenandoah.

Billie was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Arline, Jo Ann, Dorothy and Cheryl Ann in California

Cooper, Kenneth Wayne

Kenneth Wayne Cooper, son of Milo and Etna (McDowell) Cooper, was born on February 13, 1937 in Iowa City Iowa. He entered into eternal rest on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age of 76.
Kenneth grew up in Shenandoah and following high school moved to southern California. On October 22, 1955, Kenneth was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Gery in Las Vegas, Nevada. Following their marriage they resided in La Puente, California. To this union two sons were born, Steven and Jerry. They later moved to Henderson, Nevada, where Kenneth worked as a machinist. Upon retirement, they moved back to the Shenandoah/ Essex, Iowa area.
Preceding Kenneth in death were his wife, Barbara; parents; and his son, Steven Cooper. Survivors include his son, Jerry Cooper and wife Cathy of Nevada; and grandson, David Cooper and wife Anna of Wyoming; two step grandchildren, Dallas Webb and Stacey Lippold, both of Texas; great granddaughter, Lillian Cooper of Wyoming; two step great grandchildren; other relatives and friends

Cowen, Rachel Powell

Rachel Powell Cowen passed away on Tuesday morning at the Garden View Care Center.

Memorials may be directed to the Memorial Baptist Church.

Rachel Cowen was born on October 8, 1915 in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas to the late Robert and Martha (Blackburn) Powell.  She was born in a log cabin built by her grandfather.  Rachel was raised and schooled in the Mammoth Spring's area.
In 1934, she married Loyd Griffith.  To this union one child, Noel was born.  On February 10, 1947, she was united in marriage with James Cowen in Hutchinson, Kansas.  Two children, Donald and Marjorie, were born to their union.
During World War II, Rachel worked assembling bombs for the Emerson Electric Company in St. Louis, Missouri.  After her marriage to Jim, they engaged in farming in the Hutchinson and Mammoth Spring area before moving to Shenandoah, Iowa in 1952, where they also farmed.  In 1984, Jim and Rachel moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa where they remained until September of 1995 when they returned to Shenandoah.  Through the years, Rachel worked in the hospital, nursing homes and private homes in the Shenandoah area.  Even after retiring, she continued to reach out to others with a gentle hand and loving spirit.  Family and friends have warm memories of her love of baking through the many pies, cakes and bread she shared.  Rachel was a charter member of the Memorial Baptist Church and enjoyed serving wherever she was needed.  She taught Sunday school for 27 years and had the pleasure of teaching her own children and grandchildren. 

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents; brother; husband Jim; son Noel Griffith and her former daughter-in-law Joanne Cowen.  Survivors include two children, Donald L. Cowen of Shenandoah and Marjorie A. Barrett and husband Richard of Sunrise Beach, Missouri; daughter-in-law Nedra Griffith of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren Kevin Griffith and wife Holly of Harrisonville, MO, Keith Griffith of Kansas City, MO, Matthew Barrett and wife Deann of Colorado Springs, CO, Monica Bartlett and husband Joseph of Shenandoah, IA, Elizabeth Egge of Danbury, CT and William Cowen and wife Erin of Kalamazoo, MI; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; other family and friends

Cox, Deva Faye Whited

Deva Faye (Whited) Cox, Shenandoah, IA, was born to Sherman and Erma Whited on January 17, 1934, outside Tarkio, Missouri. She attended New Hampton High School until marrying Ed Cox in 1949.

Deva devoted her life to her husband and sons. She eventually received her GED through Rock Port, MO, High School and went on to work as Ed's secretary at the Christian Church in Rock Port, during his tenure as Dean of Students at Tarkio College, and at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Shenandoah, IA. She also worked with the Soil Conservation Commission and as the high school principal's secretary in Rock Port. Her last work was with Southwest Foot & Ankle Center in Shenandoah. Deva enjoyed crocheting, gardening, cooking, and, most of all, being with her family. She suffered a debilitating stroke in March of 2003 and spent the rest of her life primarily at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah. Ed was by her side each day and at his passing in January of 2013.


Deva and Ed had three sons, Dan (wife Nancy, deceased) of Omaha, Ben (Joni) of Shenandoah, IA, and Mike (Katherine) of Tarkio, MO. Dan and Nancy have two sons, Clayton (Britnie), and Matthew of Omaha, NE. Clayton and Britnie have two sons, Keller and Connor, and a daughter, Quinn. Ben and Joni have a daughter, Rachel Cox (Adam), of South Bend, IN, and a son, Aaron (Alison), of Des Moines, IA. Rachel and Adam have one son, Will. Deva is also survived by her sister Louise Long of Bethany, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews

Crilly, Genevieve L. Burkhiser

Genevieve L. (Burkhiser) Crilly was born on March 22, 1914 on the family farm in rural Hamburg, Iowa, the daughter of Conde and Katherine (Roach) Burkhiser. Genevieve entered into eternal peace on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Elk Ridge Assisted Living Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 98 years.

Genevieve graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque, Iowa with the Class of 1932. Following graduation she took business correspondence courses and later completed nurses training in Kansas City. She was united in marriage to John Herbert Crilly; they raised 11 children on their farm in rural Farragut. The couple later moved to Council Bluffs, where they farmed for 14 years. Following their retirement from farming, they moved to Sun City, Arizona. The couple enjoyed 47 years of marriage before Herb's passing.

Genevieve was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful seamstress, talented cook, loved to tend to her garden, and was active in several card clubs. She was a member of the Nonesuch Club, St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Guild, St. Patrick Catholic Church in Council Bluffs, and St. Patrick's Altar Society. Genevieve was a woman of perseverance and fortitude with an adventurous spirit. She raised three children with special needs, she used her business skills to manage the family budget; and knew that by having a close relationship with God that her faith would keep her strong.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Herb; 4 children Martha, Francis, Joan and Catherine; and 1 grandchild, Mary. Those left to honor her memory include her children John Crilly and wife Carolyn, William Crilly and wife Wilma, Gerald Crilly, Therese Paladino and husband Joe, Clare Vetter and husband Tom, Mary Jo Bailey and husband Joe, Romana McManus and husband Greg; 23 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 1, 2013 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. The family will recite the rosary prior to services at the church at 9:00 a.m., followed by family visitation until service time. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. A luncheon celebrating her life will be served by the St. Mary's Women Guild in the St Mary's Parish Hall following the burial.
