Carlson, Martha Anna Muller - Some day you will read in the newspaper that Martha Carlson has died. Don’t you believe it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now! I have gone to join loved ones in Heaven and out of this old clay tenement into a house that is immortal! Thanks be to God!
Martha Anna Carlson was a woman of steadfast and unshakable faith. She believed that the Lord would provide for her needs and the needs of her church, and He did!
She was a regimented woman who wrote in her diary daily for 78 years. Oh the stories those diaries tell! Mart enjoyed cooking and canning for her family, quilting with her twin sister, Dort, and playing cards with her friends. She graced her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with the fruits of her labor including one or more quilts made especially for each one.
Before the era when it was common for women to work outside of the home, Martha held positions in a curler making factory and a capacitor factory, served patrons at the Clarinda Bowling Alley, and shared her opinion with those buying yard goods at Petersen’s Mercantile on the square. In her retirement, she took pride in her immaculate flowers and bountiful garden.
She was a life-long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Yorktown, Iowa. Her dedication to St. Paul’s was evidenced by her involvement in Ladies Aid, Laborers for Christ, LWML, sewing for World Relief, and fundraising efforts including quilt raffles for both the church and the Clarinda Lutheran School.
Martha was born on the Muller farm southwest of Yorktown, Iowa on January, 27, 1917. On April 12, 2012, the Lord called her home to join her husband, Norman, twin sister Dorothy Sump, and her beloved daughter Patricia (Carlson) Koller. She will be celebrating in heaven with other family including her parents, Henry and Emma Muller, four brothers: Walter, Herbert, Francis and Arthur Muller, sister Ada Mueller, and son in law Bernard Fastenau.
Her legacy and our fond memories will be cherished by her family: son Jerry(Barbara)Carlson of Austin, TX, daughter Jeanette Fastenau of Chillicothe, MO, son in law, Tim (Fran) Koller of Mahomet, IL, son Ken (Karen) Carlson of Waukee, IA, 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and devoted extended family.
