James Lowell Maher, son of Joseph Edward and Norma Irene (Holmes) Maher, was born on August 7, 1945 in Huntington Park, California. He entered into rest on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the family farm northwest of Essex, Iowa at the age of 65.
At an early age Jim moved with his parents from California to the family farm at Essex. Jim began school at the Pierce Center country school at the age of five. He started his 8th grade year in the Essex Community School system, where he graduated with the Class of 1963.
Upon graduation from high school, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy in July of 1963 and honorably served until his discharge in 1966. Following his discharge from the Navy he returned to Essex.
On November 16, 1968, Jim was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ann Leahy at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Imogene, Iowa. Following their marriage they resided in Essex. To this union four children were born, Kathleen, Patrick, Shannon and Sarah.
In 1969, Jim went into partnership with his father and began farming part-time. In addition to this, he worked various carpentry jobs until taking a job with Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah in 1972. After 37 years with Eaton’s, Jim retired in February of 2009. He continued to farm until the time of his death.
Jim enjoyed farming, hand fishing, playing cards and socializing with his friends. He was known as “Mr. Fix It”, was a Chicago Cubs baseball fan and liked to watch his “stories”, a. k. a. the “Bold and the Beautiful” and the “Young and the Restless”. Jim was also quite an avid prankster with friends and especially his family.
Preceding Jim in death were his parents and mother and father-in-law, Alice and Edward Leahy. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ann Maher of Essex, IA; their four children, Kathleen Sgourakis and her husband Gus of Omaha, NE, Pat Maher of Omaha, NE, Shannon Dorton and her husband Steve of Chicago, IL, and Sarah Maher of Omaha, NE; two granddaughters, Maeve and Brynna Sgourakis, very soon to be, baby Dorton; sister and brother-in-laws, Mary Leahy of Shenandoah, IA, Tom Leahy of Imogene, IA, Frank Leahy and wife Shirley of Malvern, IA, Rev. Marsh, Naomi Darlene Lunsford - Naomi Darlene Marsh was born December 3, 1934 near Oregon, Missouri at the rural home of her parents Lester Warren and Leda Inez (Muir) Lunsford. The Lord called her home on Sunday evening, January 23, 2011 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 76 years, 1 month and 20 days. Memory Cemetery

Known all her life as Darlene, she grew up in the Holt County, Missouri area and graduated valedictorian of the New Point High School class of 1952. She attended one year of college at Ozark Bible College in Joplin, Missouri. On June 18, 1953 she was united in marriage to Lyle Keith Marsh in New Point, Missouri. This union was blessed with four children, James Franklin, Timothy Warren, Mary Evelyn, and Ronald Paul.

After their divorce in 1966, Darlene raised her children in Elmo, Missouri. Darlene was first and foremost a homemaker, but to support her family she babysat other children, cleaned houses, assisted the elderly, and worked various other jobs. The family attended the Elmo Christian Church where Darlene taught Sunday school, Bible studies, VBS, and youth groups. Three weeks out of every summer she also served as a cook at Flaming Spirit Christian Camp near New Point, Missouri.

In 1979 Darlene moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa where she worked at Longview Nursing Home in the housekeeping and dietary departments for 14 years. In 1993 she moved to Clarinda, Iowa where she became a cook at the Bethseda Care Center. She later worked in the dietary department at the Clarinda Hospital until her retirement. She then made her home at Clarhaven apartments where she enjoyed cross stitching, embroidering, crocheting, reading, and puzzles.

Faith, family, and friends were most important in Darlene’s life. She was a member of the Missouri Valley Christian Church and diligently attended the Fairview Church of Christ in Clarinda. She always enjoyed seeing her family and loved reunions. Through the years, she attended many weddings & graduations and crocheted a blanket for each new baby. She kept in touch with friends by sending cards & letters, and when possible, she would travel to the New Point Alumni Banquet each year.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her children, Jim Marsh and his wife Dianna of Neola, Iowa, Tim Marsh and Marlene Gordon Omaha, Nebraska, Mary Rine and her husband Jim of Coin, Iowa, Ron Marsh and Darcel Hallett of Beaver Lake, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren, Jody Marsh and his wife Brianne of Neola, Iowa, Heather Humbert and her husband John of Neola, Iowa, Adam Marsh of Neola, Iowa, Christopher Jereczek and his wife Stacey of Lakeville, Minnesota, Sherry Buckle and her husband Michael of Orlando, Florida, TJ Marsh of Sacremento, California, Amy Mays of Polk City, Iowa, Andy Rine and his wife Tammy of Shenandoah, Iowa, Jacob Rine of Curtis, Nebraska, Shannon Marsh and his wife Jessica of Kansas City, Missouri, Anthony Marsh of Clearmont, Missouri, Joelle Marsh of Beaver Lake, Nebraska; 16 great grandchildren; a brother LeRoy Lunsford and his wife Lillian of Bethany, Missouri; two sisters, Bethene Huss and her husband Don of San Diego, California, Nancy Abbott and her husband David of Melcher, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends.

Chad Alan Martin was born June 30, 1972 at Clarinda, Iowa to Rodney Martin and Cheryle Henneman Martin. He joined siblings Randy, Lisa and Lori Martin.
Chad, Randy and their Father Rodney were baptized in 1972 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, IA.
The family lived in Shenandoah and Denison before settling in Atlantic, Iowa in 1976.
Chad attended Washington Elementary school, Schuler Junior High School before graduating from Atlantic High School in May 1991.
As a youngster Chad played baseball with the Atlantic Little League. Chad was picked on by his two sisters, as siblings do, but he loved every minute of it.
In high school he went out for track, played Football and enjoyed Chorus. Following his highschool years, Chad served his country, enlisting in the National Guard for a short time.
He moved to Louisiana where he met and married Tiffanny August 22, 1998. December 9, 1999, beloved daughter, Bailyn Nikole, was born and May 4, 2001, precious son, Brandon Lee Alan was born. His children were the delight of his life.
While in Louisiana Chad worked on oil fields as an inspector of welds. He was passionate and dedicated to his career. In 2006 Chad returned to Iowa and lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa working again as an inspector. He recently relocated to Johnston, Iowa to live with his mother and father

David Sloan McCalla was born June 10, 1941 at Clarinda Hospital to Wilson McCalla and Hazel (Sommers) McCalla.

David spent his childhood growing up on the farm south of Clarinda. He attended Lee Grove County School then Olive Branch County School until the 8th grade. He then attended Clarinda High School and graduated in 1959. After high school, he attended Clarinda Community college for one year. David served his country in the Iowa National Guard.

On December 17, 1966 David was united in marriage to Sharon Bowers at the United Methodist Church in Bedford, IA. They had two children, Lori and Eric. David and Sharon were divorced in 1990. David spent his adult life on the farm with his father. They had a heard of milking shorthorn cattle along with a small hog operation. Besides farming David also had a wide variety of side jobs. David enjoyed reading and was always active socially attending CO-OP dinners, church, and Sunday dinners.

Following the death of his father David stayed on the farm for several years until he sold out and moved to Shambaugh, IA where he resided until August 2010 when he went to live at Westridge Nursing Home. He was there until his death on March 22, 2011.

Preceding David in death were his parents, infant brother Samuel McCalla, and brother-in-law Ed Searcy.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Eric McCalla of Shambaugh, IA; daughter Lori Click and husband Steve of Columbus, OH; sister Marianne Searcy of Colorado Springs, CO; cousins, and other relatives and friends.

McCoy, Frank Harley Sr - Frank Harley McCoy, Sr. was born July 14, 1942 to Harley and Pearl McCoy at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital. He was the youngest of 10 brothers and sisters. Frank graduated from high school in Clarinda in 1961. He enjoyed fast cars and hanging out with friends. He began working for farmers at a young age. Frank married Karen Kay McNutt in October of 1961. His son, Frank, Jr. was born in June of 1963 and his daughter, Gail, was born in October 1966.

Frank lived most of his life in Page County, Iowa other than his time in the Army National Guard 168th Infantry and a brief time in Pocahontas, Iowa. He learned to love the land and as a child his dream was to own his own farm. He purchased a small farm in College Springs, Iowa and then a larger farm one mile west of College Springs. Along with farming his own land he also helped his father-in-law, Clarence McNutt, on his farm and did custom combining in the area. While maintaining his farm and others he also worked full time at Lisle Corporation. He began as a machinist and by the time of his retirement he had become an assistant supervisor in the turret lathe department. Frank also built custom trailers and loading shoots for himself and others. He was a talented welder.

Frank hunted regularly with his family. Frank enjoyed brining family from outside of Iowa to hunt pheasant every year. He was an avid fisherman and received his master angler after catching an 11 pound Northern Pike at Callamus Reservoir in Nebraska. Frank retired from farming in 1989 and began golfing in his spare time. He retired from Lisle Corporation in 2002 and began golfing on a regular basis. He continued to work building trailers and anything else a friend or family member needed. Frank became a grandpa when Jozey Kay was born to his son in 2001.

Frank began ‘snowbirding’ in Yuma, AZ in 2003 to escape the cold Iowa winters and to golf all year round. He enjoyed hosting friends and family who visited. He especially enjoyed showing them Algodones, Mexico and where the best prices were. While in Clarinda he golfed in couples tournaments, men’s golf and the wobblies. He loved a bargain and using the materials he purchased.

Frank passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at his residence in Shambaugh. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Karen McCoy; brothers Lowell and Roger McCoy and sisters Dorothy Scott and Elsie Larson.

Surviving Frank are his children; Gail McCoy of Lincoln, Nebraska and Frank McCoy, Jr. of Des Moines, Iowa; granddaughter Jozey McCoy of Des Moines, Iowa; brothers Paul McCoy and wife Lois of Red Oak, Iowa, Glen McCoy and wife Barbara of Centralia, Illinois, Robert McCoy and wife Pauline of Creston, Iowa, Jerry McCoy of Boulder, Colorado and Bill McCoy of Shenandoah, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, great nephews and friends.

McCoy, Karen Kay McNutt - Karen Kay (McNutt) McCoy was born September 12, 1942 to Clarence and Dorothy McNutt at the hospital in Shenandoah, Iowa. Her father was a farmer and Karen spent most of her time working in the fields with him. Karen attended South Page High school where she participated in activities including vocal music, the school newspaper, track and as a class officer. She graduated from there in 1961.

Karen married Frank Harley McCoy, Sr. in 1961 in Clarinda, Iowa. They began a family in 1963 with the birth of their son Frank Harley, Jr. Their second child, a daughter named Gail, was born in 1966. Karen lived most of her adult life in Southwest Iowa other than a short time in Kentucky while Frank, Sr. was in the service and a short time in Pocahontas, Iowa. She worked full time at Clarinda Company and then NSK Corporation when it opened until her retirement in 2002. Karen also continued to farm with her husband until 1989 when they moved to Shambaugh, Iowa. She began golfing on the weekends following their move to Shambaugh. After retirement it became her biggest hobby, golfing most weekends and becoming a member at the Clarinda Country Club. Karen made many friends and had many great times on the course.

Karen’s son gave her Jozey Kay, her first and only grandchild born in 2001. Jozey was the apple of Karen’s eye. She told many stories of what Jozey had said or done that she was proud of while golfing with her friends.

In order to continue golfing and avoid the cold winters of Iowa she began ‘snowbirding’ in Yuma, AZ in 2003. She played hostess to many family and friends who visited to escape the cold for a brief winter vacation. She went on her first cruise in 2010 and reported that she loved it and had planned to travel more.

Karen passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2010, at her residence in Shambaugh, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister Judy Coleen Johnson; brother Jimmy Rae McNutt; and nephew Corey Johnson.

Remaining to cherish Karen’s memory are her children Gail McCoy of Lincoln, Nebraska and Frank McCoy, Jr. of Des Moines, Iowa; granddaughter Jozey McCoy of Des Moines; sister Sharon Faye Black and husband Bill of Shambaugh, Iowa; brother Randy Dean McNutt and wife Teresa of Shambaugh, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, great nephews and friends.

Funeral services for Dorothy McElroy, age 89, of Clarinda, Iowa, formerly of the College Springs, area, who entered into peace Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Clarinda Regional Health Care, Clarinda, Iowa will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend James Crapson officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Dorothy Irene McElroy was born November 15, 1921, near Bonaparte, Iowa, the daughter of James Edward Bennett and Amelia Emma (Mack) Bennett. She passed away Saturday March 19, 2011, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa. She attended elementary school at Bonaparte until the third grade and then moved with her family to Scott City, Kansas. She lived there for five years. The dust storms forced the family to move to Page County where she completed the eighth grade. On February 14, 1939, she married Paul McElroy. They made their home southeast of Clarinda on the Jessie Shambaugh farm. They were blessed with one daughter, Pauline.

She worked side by side with her husband, Paul, raising livestock and growing crops. She especially enjoyed raising chickens, selling eggs and chickens to customers who came to the farm. She loved God’s out of doors and was manifested by the beautiful flowers with which she surrounded her home. She loved cooking, trying new recipes and sharing them with others. She had many interests and hobbies including crocheting, sewing, and making gifts for her family.

Dorothy and Paul belonged to the Clarinda Circle 8 Square Dance Club and the Clarinda Saddle Club, and were very active for many years. Dorothy was an active member of the College Springs Presbyterian Church where she was baptized and confirmed on April 22, 1984. She served the Lord through bible study, prayer chains, and the Women's Association.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Pauline Coston and husband Harold of Coin, Iowa. Two grandchildren, Kim Lewis and husband Joe of Red Oak, Iowa; Kevin Coston and wife Leah of Clarinda. Great grandchildren, Shayne and Jared, sons of Kim; Blaine and Brevin, sons of Kevin and Leah.

McIntyre, Dorothy June Mascher - Dorothy June McIntyre was born July8, 1926 in Farragut, Iowa, the twin daughter of John and Ellen Sophia (Carlberg) Mascher. She passed away on Thursday evening, June 9, 2011 at her home in Shenandoah at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 1 day.

Dorothy grew up in Farragut and graduated from Farragut High School in 1944. On July 15, 1951, she was united in marriage to Richard McIntyre in Farragut. This union was blessed with four sons, Rick, Steve, Tim and John.

Dorothy was a homemaker raising her four children. She worked numerous jobs including Roberts Grocery in Farragut, the Elks Lodge in Shenandoah, and for 17 years she worked in the dietary department at Elm Heights. She was a member of the Farragut United Methodist Church and the None Such Card Club. She enjoyed various kinds of puzzles, yard work and shooting pool with her sister Doris. She really loved children, especially babies.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Richard Mascher; a sister, Elaine Peters; a brother-in-law, Carl McIntyre; and a sister-in-law, Irene McIntrye.

Age 74 of rural Northboro, IA passed away on Friday morning; September 9, 2011 at the Bellevue Medical Center in Bellevue, NE.

He was born Harry Donovan Michel on October 5, 1936 in Shenandoah, IA; the son of Harry Edwin and Nora Hazel (Griffin) Michel. He attended country school and later the Farragut High School, Farragut, IA where he graduated with the class of 1954.

Shortly after his graduation, he was united in marriage to Karen Kay Wells on July 3, 1954 at the United Methodist Church in Farragut.

Don was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a life-long farmer who never really retired! He was involved in various organizations during his younger years and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at rural Northboro where he took care of the church cemetery for many years.

He is survived by his wife Karen of Northboro; children: Diane Foster and husband Ed of Riverton, IA, Mike Michel and wife Deb and Sonia Athen and husband Bob all of Northboro; ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; sisters: Yvonne Meskimen of Cave City, AR, Patricia Hall of Des Moines, IA, Sharon Gilbert and husband John of Northboro, Gwen Markut and husband Ray of Shenandoah, IA and Gayle Moody and husband Gary of Northboro; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death and welcomed home by his son Brent Michel, a granddaughter Brooke Michel and grandson Derek Athen.

The family will greet friends on Monday (Sept. 12) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Michel home; 3944 310th St., Northboro, IA.

A private family service will be held later in the week at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, rural Northboro with Rev. Steve Hetzel officiating.

Norman Lee Mier was born February 14, 1952, at Clarinda, Iowa, to Martin and Doris (Schaefer) Mier. He passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at the age of 59 at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.

Norman graduated with the Class of 1970 from Clarinda High School where he excelled in athletics. He attended college at South Dakota State University and graduated in 1974. He worked for four years in the Fremont/Wahoo area as a loan officer for Production Credit Association. His love of farming brought him back to Clarinda in 1978 to farm with his dad.

On December 22, 1984, Norm and Linda (Jones) Mier were united in marriage at the College Springs Presbyterian Church. They were blessed with three children, Sean, Megan and Jennifer.

In addition to farming, Norm was a full time bus driver. He always had a special way of relating to and interacting with children. He enjoyed driving to all the sporting events and cheering on the Clarinda teams.

Norm was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He was an active church member serving as Vice President, Elder, Trustee, LYF Leader and various other committees. He looked forward to the Page County Fair each year where he served as Assistant Beef Superintendent for many years. It brought him great joy to watch his children’s involvement in 4-H and the livestock area. He also served on the Co-op Board of Directors and was active in Jaycees both in Clarinda and Fremont, Nebraska.

Most important to Norm was his family. His love for Linda, Sean, Megan and Jennifer was always so evident. He always made time for his family and gave his children a good foundation for their future endeavors. Because of his genuine interest in his children’s friends, he was considered a second dad to many.

Norm was always kind and friendly to everyone. He always saw the good in every situation. He was a fun person to talk to because he loved to tell stories of his family, of travel and of life. When you talked to Norm you could tell he was really interested in what you were saying. He loved people and people loved Norm.

Miller, Doris Lorene Beery - Doris Lorene Miller, 88, died Friday, July 1, 2011, at the Westridge Quality Care Center in Clarinda, IA, where she had been a resident for the past two and a half years.

Doris was a life-long Clarinda resident, born November 25, 1922, in Clarinda to Stephen Glen and Lena Margaret (Probasco) Beery. She graduated from Clarinda High School in 1941.

On September 4, 1941, she was united in marriage to Leo Elkins Miller at Maryville, MO. Doris and Leo maintained their home at the Miller century farm southeast of Clarinda for nearly 50 years, before moving to Clarinda in 1990. Doris was a homemaker and farm wife, raising chickens, gardening, and assisting Leo with many of the farm chores and activities over the years. She was a faithful member of the Shambaugh Church of God and was active in the WCSC women’s ministry there. She was also an excellent seamstress and avid baseball fan, watching countless games on TV even in later years.

Doris is survived by two daughters, Sandra Bramble and husband, Ron, of Clarinda, and Bev Florke, also of Clarinda; six grandchildren, Jeff Bramble and wife, Tracey, of Ames, IA; Steve Bramble and wife, Margaret, of Dallas Center, IA; Diane Joslin and husband, Jeff, of Story City, IA; Scott Florke and wife, Debbie, of Council Bluffs, IA; Alicia Ozenberger and husband, Jason, of Ashland, MO; and Matthew Florke of Clarinda. There are 14 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo, in 1994; half-brother, Dean Beery; sister, Ruth Burk and husband, Bill; brother, Gerald Beery and wife, Marie; and son-in-law, Jim Florke.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 6, at 10:30am at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda. The family will greet visitors from 7-8pm on Tuesday, July 5, also at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel. Interment will be at the Clarinda Cemetery

Minard, Howard "Ed" - Howard "Ed" Minard age 80, Co.Bluffs, passed away Thursday September 22,2011. Ed was born, January 15,1931 in Hawleyville, Iowa. Served in the US Army from 1952 to 1954 and spent over 30 years with ASARCO Company in Omaha retiring in 1994 as a Kettleman, Furnace Operator.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George "Bibs" and Iva Fleck Minard, wife Donna Lea (Shreeves) Minard in 2007.

John David Minard, son of Harold "Bibs" and Irene (Fleck) Minard was born at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital on February 7, 1944. John graduated from the Clarinda High School in 1963. He then entered the Clarinda Community College Mechanical Technology program and graduated in 1965. Following his college graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force from 1965-1969, and served our country during the Vietnam conflict. While at Junior College, he met on a blind date, and later married Teresa Luree Hummel on October 20, 1968 at the First Christian Church in Oakland, Iowa. They were blessed with two children, Lisa Luree and Michael John.

John retired from Lisle Corporation on March 3, 2010 after 41 years. He worked for a brief time in the engineering department and then became the Foreman of the Turret Lathe department. John was currently on the board of the First Christian Church, board member of the Nodaway Valley Museum and a member of the Tarkio Valley Antique Tractor Club.

Since a young boy, John has always enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming. He recently collected and restored several antique tractors. John liked to do carpentry work, remodeling every room in their home, and helping others with their remodeling projects. He was a true handy-man, whatever needed fixed or repaired, John could do it. John especially loved being a grandpa, and enjoyed watching and playing with his four grandkids.

Money, George A. - George A. Money, 78 of Lincoln, NE (formerly of Shenandoah, IA and Omaha, NE) passed on to be with the Lord on April 14, 2011 in Lincoln following a brief illness. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

His parents Ruth and Earl Money preceded him in death. Monk, Ruth L. Cooper - Ruth L. Monk, daughter of Milo (Steve) and Etna Cooper, was born June 10, 1920 in Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed away on Monday, May 2, 2011 at Fair Oaks Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 90.
Living in Shenandoah most of her lifetime, Ruth received her education from the Shenandoah Community Schools.
On July 17, 1948, in a double ring ceremony, Ruth was united in marriage to Alvin C. Monk at Rock Port, Missouri in the presence of Alvin’s mother. Ruth was a member of the First Baptist Church in Shenandoah.
Ruth loved to work. She worked around home and was also employed by two different companies. Her favorite job was as office secretary working with her husband, Alvin, at Watson Brothers Transportation in Red Oak and later at Nebraska City.
After Watson Brothers closed in Nebraska City, Ruth worked as a secretary comptroller at Morton House Kitchens for eight years. She later was employed by the Nebraska Farmers Union as office manager and head bookkeeper, serving under two presidents of the company, Elton Berck of Lincoln and Louis Wiebe of Beatrice, NE.
Ruth enjoyed all types of sewing and crocheting. Her outside activity was her lodge work. Ruth was a past Guardian of Job’s Daughters, past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Queen Esther #1, and past Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge #364 for two years in 1959 and 1960 while living in Nebraska. Upon retirement, Ruth’s Rebekah membership was transferred to Iowa, where she served as the 1990 Noble Grand of the Shenandoah Lodge. She was Noble Grand for the Red Oak Lodge during 1992 and 1993.
Preceding Ruth in death were her parents; husband, Alvin; four sisters, Betty Mace, Edith Scott, La Vita Waldron and Mildred Edens; three brothers, Donald, Robert and Merrill Cooper; and nephew, Steven.

Monroe, Douglas James - Douglas James Monroe was born January 26, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois. Doug was adopted as an infant by James Lester and Maria Magdelene (Lentz) Monroe. His grandparents, Lester and Gladys Monroe, raised Doug after his parent’s early passing. He passed away on Friday morning, April 1, 2011 at Alegent Health Lakeside Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 58 years, 2 months and 6 days.

Doug grew up in Omaha and graduated from Westside High School in 1971. After high school, Doug attended UNO and Platte College. Following his college days, he moved back to Omaha and bought two semis and started his own trucking business, and later drove for other companies. His last employer was CTS of Council Bluffs, Iowa. On February 5, 2010, Doug was united in marriage to Linda Swank in Omaha, Nebraska.

Doug enjoyed woodworking and making pens using his lathe. He was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan and loved his dogs, Marks and Ottie. He also enjoyed doing yard work and interacting with his Araria Fraternity. Most of all Doug enjoyed his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; Lester and Gladys Monroe, and Adolf and Gertrude Lentz; and a sister-in-law, Beth Hall.

Monson, Marjorie Ann Morton - Marjorie Ann (Morton) Monson was born on April 9, 1922 in Red Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert Lewis and Hazel Ella (Winn) Morton. Marjorie entered into eternal peace on December 5, 2011 in Red Oak, Iowa at the blessed age of 89 years.

Marjorie’s early years were spent primarily in the community of Red Oak. When she was 4 years old the family moved to Newton, when her father took a job for Maytag. The family returned to Red Oak in 1931 after the plant closed. Marjorie graduated from Red Oak High School with the Class of 1940.

On January 27, 1943 she was united in marriage to Ted Monson. The couple made their first home in Omaha, until Ted was drafted and Marjorie returned to Red Oak to reside. She worked for Murphy Calendar Company off and on as a secretary for a total of 36 years until her retirement. She also worked for Kalo Brick and Tile and Farmers Insurance as a secretary, while living in Fort Dodge. In 1961 the couple moved to their residence east of Essex where she resided for the next 50 years.

Marjorie was a lifelong member of the Red Oak Baptist Church. Some of her hobbies included reading, gardening, camping, fishing, and crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Rosa Swanson; husband Ted Monson in March of 1991; son Daryl Monson in Sept. of 2009; and daughter Susan Monson in Jan. of 2010.

Moore, Martin Laverne "Marty" - Martin Laverne (Marty) Moore was born July 27, 1937 in Villisca, IA; the son of Harold Laverne ‘Pepper’ and Frances Loretta (Long) Moore. Marty grew up on a farm near Bushville, going to Frog Pond School and Corning High School. He was a member of Fairview Church south of Corning.
Marty married Delores Jean Sanburn on September 28, 1957 in Maryville, MO and to this union were born two children: Marilyn and Jeff. Marty farmed near Bushville and Villisca, IA and later also had a stock truck in the Guss area. Marty and Jean moved to Villisca in 1966. He worked at Wilson Foods in Clarinda for 17 years, raising livestock on his acreage in Nodaway. In 1989, due to health issues, he established a residence in Arizona and was near Jeff's family. He enjoyed traveling around Arizona. In 1995, Jean retired to Arizona with him. In 2004, they moved back to Clarinda to be near Marilyn and her family. Marty enjoyed his grandchildren, great grandchildren and also his cats.
Marty passed away July 3, 2011 at Clarinda Regional Health Center. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Morhain, Imogene Beaulah Walters - Imogene Beaulah Morhain was born November 25, 1915 in Drumnight, Oklahoma, the daughter of Samuel Price and Sadie Leona (Hemstreet) Walters. She passed away on Sunday afternoon, October 30, 2011 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa at the age of 95 years, 11 months and 5 days.

Imogene grew up in Oklahoma and graduated from Sapulpa High School in 1934. She was united in marriage to Bruce Nelson on June 2, 1938. This union had one son, James. On August 13, 1958, she was married to Orville Morhain in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Imogene worked as a sales clerk at J.C.Penney for many years. She was a member of the Dancing Granny’s, several Bridge Clubs and the Nishna Valley Saddle Club. She loved playing cards, riding horses and snowmobiles and enjoyed crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Orville; her son, James Nelson; and a brother, Huliett Henning.

Survivors include her nieces, Darlene Jackson and her husband Darrel of Shenandoah, Iowa, Phyllis Scott and her husband Richard of Shenandoah, Iowa; a nephew, Jerry Morhain and his wife Marilyn of Sedalia, Missouri; along with many other relatives and friends

Jolene Margaret Murphy was born January 13, 1949 at Atlantic, Iowa to Walter Clayton and Darlene (Jacobsen) Clayton. She was a graduate of Atlantic High School.

Jodi was currently a resident of Port St. Lucie, Florida; a Real Estate Agent with Star Reality Services of Port St. Lucie. She was a member of the National Association of Realtors, a member of St. Lucie Real Estate Association, an E board member and an American Legion Auxiliary member of Post #318

Novinger, John Burton - John Burton Novinger, the son of Wilbur H. and Neva Novinger, was born in New Market, IA on June 24, 1928, and passed away at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE on December 6, 2011 at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 12 days.

He was united in marriage to Phyllis Jean Barrett on July 3, 1949 in Shenandoah, IA. They lived most of their married life in Shenandoah, IA where John was employed with Iowa Power Light until his retirement from the company (Mid American Energy). He was a long time, active member of the Community of Christ Church where he served as an Elder. John enjoyed participating and contributing to Shenandoah community activities, including Kiwanis Club.

John loved to travel with Phyllis, participate in church activities, woodworking, gardening, but spending time with Phyllis, his children, grandchildren, extended family and many friends was his greatest joy.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis Jean of Shenandoah, IA; and their three children: Louise Novinger and husband Robert Hoeglund of Palmer Lake, CO; Bill Novinger and wife Cindy of Shenandoah, IA; Ross Novinger and wife Glenda of Vacaville, CA. Grandchildren include: Louise’s daughter Katey and her husband Ron Calpo; Bill’s sons Joshua and his fiancée Ali and Justin; and Ross’ children Amanda, Sarah and her husband Eric Ostrom, Samuel, Neva and Jason. Sisters: Helen Clayton and husband Orie and Louise Merkle and husband Dick. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Wilbur Novinger and mother Neva O’Dell Novinger.

O'Brien, Louis E. - Louis E. O’Brien, was born on December 5, 1917 in rural Imogene, Iowa the son of Matthew and Genevieve (Kennedy) O’Brien. Louis entered into eternal rest on September 30, 2011 at the Shenandoah Medical Center, at the blessed age of 93 years.

Louis lived most of his life in the Imogene and Shenandoah area. He attended Rice and Shenandoah schools. On December 4, 1946 he was united in marriage to Jean Rose at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah. The couple was blessed with the birth of one daughter, Barbara Ann.

Louis farmed nearly all of his life near Imogene. He also worked for the Page County ASCS in Clarinda for over 17 years and for some 4 years he worked as a Compliance Supervisor for 12 county offices for the State of Iowa. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Mary; brothers John, Bill, Eugene, Ambrose, Gerald, Robert and Maurice; son-in-law Larry Nielson; and daughter Barbara Nielsen.

Arthur William “Art” Oldham, Sr., son of Richard and Blanche Marie (Fahseler) Oldham was born on January 22, 1948 in Hamburg, Iowa. Art attended Rural Tarkio Country School before graduating from Tarkio High School in 1966.
Art was united in marriage to Karen Kay Silence on March 27, 1970. They became the parents of two children, J.R. Oldham and Candi Oldham. They were later divorced. On January 2, 2001, Art was united in marriage to Joyce Sieving at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Clarinda, Iowa. They made their home in Clarinda until the present time.
For a short time, Art was employed in road construction and building water towers and sewer systems. In 1972, Art was employed by Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah, Iowa, until retiring in 2003 after 31 years. Art passed away October 30, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in Maryville, Missouri, at the age of 63.
Besides his parents, Art was preceded in death by brothers, John Oldham and Richard Oldham, Jr. and sisters, Glenna Mae Stoll, Lois Bright and Betty Bright.

Oline, Linda Louise Jackson - Linda Louise (Martin) Oline was born November 7, 1939 in Clarinda, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Lavina (Smith) Jackson. She passed away on Saturday evening, September 17, 2011 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center in Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 10 days.
Linda grew up in Clarinda and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1958. She later attended Stewart’s School of Cosmetology. On March 5, 1961 she was united in marriage to Norval Oline in Las Vegas, Nevada. This union was blessed with two children, Kory and Kody.
Linda was the receptionist for Dr. Zehr’s office in Clarinda for 17 years. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the American Legion Auxiliary. Her family was the true joy of her life, especially her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Joy Jackson; and her grandmother, Pearl Smith.

O'Neal, Stephen Lewis - Stephen Lewis O’Neal was born January 2, 1948 at Shenandoah, Iowa to Lewis O’Neal and Marian (Westenberg) O’Neal. He attended school in Clearmont where he met his future wife, Paula Nicholas, in August of 1954 in first grade. He graduated Burlington Junction High School in 1966. Steve served in the United States Army, being drafted in 1967 and was in the infantry during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969. After returning from service he worked at Union Gas in Braddyville during most of the 70’s and later he helped Arnold Davison in carpentry work and did farm work for Bill Henry in the 80’s. Steve and Paula were married at Braddyville United Methodist Church October 10, 1981 and had just celebrated their 30th anniversary. Steve helped farm with his father Lewis until he passed away September 2002. He then turned over the row crop farming to Richard Riddle.
Steve was a kind hearted sentimental guy who loved family, friends and animals of all kinds. He knew no strangers and offered a friendly wave to everyone. Whenever met on the road, regardless if he knew them or not, he waved and continued until they passed by. History and politics were favorite subjects and topics to him. Vintage cars and trucks were also enjoyable. He was working on his brown 1978 Toyota pickup as he unexpectedly passed away Saturday, November 5, 2011 at his home east of Braddyville, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Marian O’Neal; mother-in-law Pauline (Chesnut) Edwards; and brother-in-law Wayne Stahlnecker.
He leaves behind his wife, Paula, of Braddyville; son Andy O’Neal of Braddyville; step son Aaron Nicholson of Clarinda; step daughter-in-law Lisa Nicholson of Clarinda; step grandchildren: Marissa Brown and Willow Nicholson, Amanda Bedsworth and husband Michael, Mikeal Carlson and Kristoffer Martinsen; father-in-law Cecil “Pete” Nicholas of Hopkins, MO; sister-in-law Robin Stahlnecker, Council Bluffs, IA; stepfather-in-law Max Edwards, Concord, GA; a host of cousins and many, many friends too numerous to mention. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and leaves behind a great legacy with his family.

Owen, Carolyn Ann Dorl - Carolyn Ann (Dorl) Owen was born February 4, 1939 at Norwich, Iowa to Wilson C. and Beulah E. (Nelson) Dorl. The family moved to New Market when Carol was young. She graduated New Market High School in 1957. She was united in marriage to Paul Owen in 1963 and they raised one son, Randy. Following their marriage they worked in Denver, CO, Independence, MO, Panama City, FL, Franklin, PA. In 1993 Carol retired due to health and she and Paul moved to LaGrange, GA. In 1999 they relocated to Shenandoah and operated The Days Inn until January 2007 when they retired and moved to Clarinda. She pursued her calling and became a Certified Lay Minister and served the Faith & Hope Circuit of the United Methodist Church.
On Sunday morning, October 16, 2011 Carol was called home. She passed away at Methodist Hospital, Omaha, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Herbert and Alice (Lehman) Owen, sister-in-law Patricia Bothwell and husband Clinton, and great grandchild Gabriel Keith Stevens.
Carol is survived by her husband, Paul, of Clarinda, IA; son Randy Owen and wife Lisa of Independence, MO; grandchildren Charles W Owen, Crystal Stevens and her two children Blake Dakota and Jaxson, and Cassondra Newton and her daughter Shauniece Garrison all of Independence, MO; brothers Charles Dorl and wife Shirley of Shenandoah, IA, and John Dorl of Denver, CO; sisters Esther Swigert and husband Bill and Myrna Adair, all of Clarinda, IA; in-laws Ralph L Owen and wife Glenda of Cheyenne, WY and William E “Bill” Owen and wife Iris of Clarinda, IA; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Peterson, Mildred M. - Mildred, 85, passed away Wednesday evening at an Omaha Hospital.

Survivors include her daughter Deb Koehler and husband Steve of Shenandoah; two sons, Gary Peterson and wife Elaine of Clarinda, Iowa, David Peterson and wife Lindy of Essex; along with other relatives and friends.

Pierson, Marvel Faith - Marvel Faith Pierson, 73, was born at home to Floyd and Florence Pierson on February 3, 1938, and passed away at her home in Calimesa, Calif., on January 6, 2011.

She grew up in Shambaugh, Iowa, attending grade school there and graduated from Clarinda High School. She went to California, married and worked for a few years. She returned to Clarinda to attend LPN school at Iowa Western Community College. Following graduation she worked at the Clarinda MHI, then moved to Kansas City, Mo., to work at the Truman Hospital in Independence, Mo.

Marvel moved back to California where she received her RN degree, being on the Dean's List. She worked at the Pamona Valley Hospital for 15 years until a shoulder injury prevented her from continuing.

Marvel was a very talented person; she sang in churches, school choir and at her RN graduation. She loved performing in plays, and giving readings. She had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh, including her family. She didn't know a stranger.

She dedicated her life to the Lord and did a lot of work in the Nazarene Church she attended. She did a lot of volunteer work, helping needy people and serving food. She was a very generous person, and a very special aunt and sister.

She is survived by a daughter that she raised, Valerie Cummings and husband Robert of California, two grandsons, a granddaughter, a great-grandson; sister Grace Johnson Forbes of Clarinda, sister-in-law Gerry Pierson of California; seven nephews, two nieces, many great-nieces and nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Gladys Gentry, and Mildred Knizley, brothers Cleo, Leo, and Wayne Pierson and nice Marcie Straley.

Marvel was loved by her family, spoiling her as she was the youngest. She will be missed by all of us. Love you sis. Funeral arrangements were made in California

James Edward Poore was born September 2, 1943, in Taylor County, Iowa to Ward Edward Poore and Yvonne Elizabeth (Blane) Poore. Jim and his six siblings grew up on a farm eight miles east of Bedford in the Platteville area. He was a graduate of Bedford High School. Jim joined the United States Army when he was seventeen, spending some of his tour in Germany.

Jim worked on a dairy farm in the Lamoni area before moving to Clarinda where he worked on the Clarinda Police Force for a number of years. In the early 1970’s, he moved to Des Moines working as a manager for Clark Oil. He returned to Southwest Iowa for a time before moving to Illinois working as a district manager overseeing numerous gas stations. Jim also owned a pawn shop and currently was living in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Jim was a man of faith; he was active in his church in Nevada. He had a great sense of humor and liked to play jokes on people. He loved his animals and had a soft spot for his dogs, Joker and Molly. He enjoyed being outdoors and spending time on his acreage enjoying nature.

Preceding Jim in death were his parents and brother, Stephen Poore.

Posten, Margaret Lois Williams - Memorial services for Margaret L. Posten, 96, of Villisca, Iowa, will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, November 19, 2011, at the Villisca United Methodist Church. There is open visitation at the Wolfe Funeral Home of Villisca. A luncheon in the church fellowship hall will follow services. There will be a private burial of ashes in the North Page Cemetery at a later date .
Margaret Lois (Williams) Posten was born March 28, 1915 in Montgomery County, Iowa to Harry and Ethel (Fisher) Williams. She attended and graduated in the class of 1931 from Villisca High School. She attended college at Tarkio College in Missouri and obtained her Bachelors degree. After graduating from college, Margaret started her career as a school teacher. She married Leonard Posten on December 21, 1936 in Red Oak, Iowa and to this union were born two children: Pamela Ann and John Leonard. In the late 50’s, Margaret wrote an Iowa history book call “This is a Place Iowa” which was used in the Iowa State Public School System. She also wrote three children’s books. She was active in the Methodist Church.
Margaret passed away Sunday, November 13, 2011 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband Leonard.
Surviving Margaret are her children: Pamela Abel and husband Bill Hinshaw of Boulder, Colorado and John Posten and wife Margaret of Villisca, Iowa; grandchildren: Whitney Clarkson and husband John of Berthoud, Colorado and Jan Posten and wife Heather of Villisca, Iowa; great grandchildren Kenyon and Tristan Clarkson of Berthoud, Colorado

Pratt, Delbert Dean - Delbert Dean Pratt was born March 4, 1931 in New Market, Iowa, the son of Dwight Myron and Bernice Agatha (Cunningham) Pratt. He passed away on Monday evening, March 14, 2011 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center at the age of 80 years and 10 days.

Delbert grew up in New Market and graduated from New Market High School in 1949. After high school, Delbert served in the United States Air Force. Delbert worked as a truck driver most of his life. He also farmed and had worked for the Iowa Highway Patrol. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and had attended the New Market Methodist Church. He loved to hunt, fish and read.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step mothers, Susan Nevada and Ruth Pauline Pratt; his sister, Nancy Kirsch; brother-in-law, Kenneth Davison; an uncle, Chester Pratt; an aunt, Bonnie Karg; son-in-law, Gary Farmer and a niece, Laura Wymore.

Survivors include his four daughters, Deanna Harris and her husband Lanny of Clarinda, Iowa, Denise Pierce and her husband Charles of Jefferson City, Missouri, Debra Farmer and Dave Woodyard of Clarinda, Iowa, Jacqueline Moore of Savannah, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Austin Harris of Des Moines, Iowa, Mikayla Harris of Clarinda, Iowa, Lauren Pierce of Columbia, Missouri, William Pierce of Jefferson City, Missouri, Chelsie Farmer of Clarinda, Iowa, Lucas Farmer of Red Oak, Iowa, Natascha Degase of Savannah, Missouri, Austin Brown of Ft. Bliss, Texas; eight great grandchildren; three sisters, Beverly Davison of Clarinda, Iowa, Sue Strough and her husband David of Gravity, Iowa, Ethel Leek and her husband Dennis of Bolivar, Missouri; brother-in-law, Glen Kirsch and his wife Julie of Clarinda, Iowa, along with many other relatives and friends.

Pratt, Phyllis Mae Sefrit - Funeral services for Phyllis Pratt, age 83, of New Market, Iowa, who entered into peace Saturday, October 15, 2011 at her home in New Market, were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Clarinda with Reverend Loren Daly officiating. Visitation was held Monday from 3:00 to 7:00. with the family greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00.
Interment was held at the Memory Cemetery in New Market.
Phyllis Mae (Sefrit) Pratt was born December 19, 1927, in Delphos, Iowa the daughter of Frank and Gladys (Elmore) Sefrit. Phyllis lived her entire life in southwest Iowa and graduated from New Market High School with the Class of 1945.
Phyllis was united in marriage to Robert Pratt on June 3, 1945. They were blessed with three children, Linda, Connie and Ron, eight grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Phyllis and Bob farmed near Siam for forty-seven years. Bob preceded her in death in 1992. Phyllis then moved to New Market in 1993.
Phyllis was a member of the Siam Church of Christ and a member of many community organizations. Phyllis was known for her generous heart and her wonderful cooking and baking. She enjoyed spending time with her family and having them all together during holidays, especially the Fourth of July!
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert; brothers, Ronald at infancy and Robert Sefrit and wife Kathleen; brother-in-law Dale Pratt; sister-in-law LaMead Carmichael and husband Cliff.

Preston, Carolyn "Jane" - Carolyn "Jane" Preston passed away early Sunday morning, June 12, 2011 at the Shenandoah Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Services will be held at a later date. Mrs. Preston donated her body to the Mayo Clinic for Parkinson's Research.

Pulley, Roland Martin - Roland Martin Pulley was born on March 11, 1925 in Cumberland, Iowa, the son of Martin John and Sybil Agnes (Trent) Pulley. Roland entered into the arms of his Lord on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Shenandoah Medical Center, surrounded by his loving and supportive family.

Roland’s early years were spent in the community of Lewis, Iowa. The family later moved to Shenandoah. Roland graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1943.

Roland was united in marriage to Carla Mae Messersmith on July 29, 1946 in Shenandoah, Iowa. The couple was blessed with the birth of three children Marsha, Janet, and Roland David. Roland and Carla enjoyed 65 years of marriage. During his working years he was employed by Henry Field Seed and Nursery from 1942-1945 and Earl May Seed Company from 1946-1991.

Roland was a member of All American Seed Association, served as a judge at the Page County Fair, was a member of the Shenandoah School Board, was appointed chairman & treasurer of the Wassail Bowl, was a former member of the Shenandoah Optimist Club and a member of the Congregational Church. Some of his passions included woodworking, gardening, tending to his flowers and enjoying nature.

Roland was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Edward and Loren Pulley; and sister Jean Masterson. Those left to honor his memory include his wife Carla Mae Pulley; daughters Marsha Miller and husband Terry and Janet Allumbaugh and husband Mike both of Shenandoah, IA; son Roland David Pulley and wife Kathy of Milan, IL; grandchildren, Jeff Miller and wife Amy of Shenandoah, Dana Finnegan and husband Mike of Colorado, Brent Allumbaugh and wife Ginny of Council Bluffs, Traci Haarmann and husband Gary of Independence, MO, Ben Pulley and wife Julie of Peoria, IL, Dan Pulley and wife Kaitlyn of Bettendorf, IA and Adelyn Pulley of Milan, IL; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Joy Rosenquist of Council Bluffs; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 21, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Shenandoah Congregational Church. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Mel Hurst. Attending the memory register were Dorothy Bayless and Jackie Holmes. Ushers were Mark Eno and Bill LeVere. Caring for the flowers were Mary Lou Rexroth and Doris Brodersen. Vocalist was Jack Baxer and organist was Carolee Rees. Musical selections were "In The Garden", "I'll Be Seeing You" and the congregation sang "Amazing Grace". Casket bearers were Jeffrey Miller, Dana Finnegan, Brent Allumbaugh, Traci Haarmann, Benjamin Pulley, Daniel Pulley and Adelyn Pulley. Honorary bearers were Duane Rexroth, Tom Brodersen, Marlin Holmes, John Bayless, Bill Wiechman, LeRoy McCoskey, Chuck Irvin, Bill Scharp and Darrell Jones. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials are being directed to either the SMC Hospice or the Shenandoah Congregational United Church of Christ
