Eberly, Merl James - Merl James Eberly was born May 13, 1935 to Merl A. and Ada M. (Barchus) Eberly west of Clarinda. He entered into rest at his home Saturday, June 11, 2011, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Celebration of Life services were held at St. John’s Lutheran Church with burial in the Clarinda Cemetery.
On October 6, 1954 he and Patricia Lee Heil were united in marriage. To that union six children were born – Julie Kae, Ricky Jay, Jill Anne, Joy Sue, Ryan James and Rodney Jacob. There are 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His family has been the center of his life through the years with all the children being involved with his interest in sports, as well as hunting, fishing and love of the land. His reading of American history left him with a deep respect for our country’s heritage & military that carried over to the younger generations as well. Holidays and family gatherings were always a special time with the growing numbers adding to the fun.
Merl was a graduate of Clarinda High School and Clarinda Junior College where he obtained a teaching degree. It was during those years his love of athletics was developed under some very caring coaches, namely Al Gray, John Tedore and John Altfillisch. A four-sport athlete in high school, he played basketball in junior college and minor league baseball for the Chicago White Sox.
During the early years of their marriage Merl worked at Kearney Corp., Wert’s Locker and Robert’s Dairy before beginning an almost 30 year career at the Clarinda Herald Journal where he started in the back shop, wrote sports, was an advertising salesman and stockholder. His column “Sport Shorts by ME” was always a favorite of his and his readers. He also was a volunteer baseball coach at IWCC. Following the sale of the paper the Eberly’s were owners of The Shoe Box and later the Celebrity Inn. Merl had been retired since the sale of the motel in 1999. Opportunities to leave Clarinda came in both the publishing and baseball fields, but this was his home and he was proud of it for the friendliness, work ethic and community spirit. He felt it was also the right place to raise their family.
His association with the Clarinda A’s baseball program began in 1954 when he was a player, then manager from 1961-1997, serving as the General Manager at the time of his death. When the team changed from the town team to the collegiate concept in the early 70’s, he told board president Dr. C.E. Nichols he would manage for two years, but his love of the game and working with young people kept him there quite a bit longer. For a couple of years in the early 60’s he played the town football team and in those days till 1981 coached the Lancers, a town basketball team.
There have been awards through the years to Halls of Fame, Citizen of the Year and Lifetime Achievement among others from Clarinda Chamber of Commerce, IWCC, National Baseball Congress, Midwest Professional Scouts and Cardinal Booster Club, capped by the naming of the baseball diamond in 2010 as Eberly Field. All these he accepted with humility on behalf of his family, his co-workers at the Herald Journal, the community and A’s alumnus who have all supported his work with youth and activities in Clarinda and that included not only his own children, but the many from across the country who have played for him, parents of the players, the local people who opened their doors to the “boys of summer” and the many managers, coaches, scouts and umpires who crossed his path through the years.
A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, he was a daily Bible reader whose “angel experience” before a third surgery in the fall of 2008, along with great support from those around him, sustained him into the fifth year of his bout with cancer. The 3 F’s – faith, family and friends – were very important to him. He always felt blessed during his life with the opportunities and associations that had been part of it.
Surviving him are his wife of over 56 years, Pat; children: Julie (Mrs. John Brummett), Waukee, IA, Rick (Angie) Eberly, Highland, KS, Jill (Mrs. Scott) Sunderman Clarinda, Iowa, Joy (Mrs. Dave) Cox, Shellsburg, IA, Ryan Eberly, Clarinda, IA and Rod Eberly, Highland, KS; grandchildren: BJ (Missy) Windhorst, West Des Moines, IA, Temple (Mrs. Chad) Netten, Waukee, Iowa, John Brummett III and fiancé Terri Kragel, San Antonio, TX, Blake Brummett, Kansas City, KS, Cooper Eberly, Highland, KS, Jara (Mrs. Kyle) Johnson, Pella, IA, Jacob (Allyson) Sunderman, St. Augustine, FL, Jared Sunderman, Kansas City, KS and girlfriend Caitlin Phillips, Maryville, MO, Carmen Cox and Marcus Josephson, Red Oak, IA, Meghan Cox, Maryville, MO, Bryce Eberly, Clarinda; great-grandchildren: Creighton, Aydn, Finley and Aniston Netten, Drake Windhorst and Chloe Josephson; sister Sandy (Mrs. Harris) Thompson, Bellevue, NE; brother John (Paula) Eberly, Colleyville, TX; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Eddie Earl Eighmy, 63, of Clarinda, Iowa, formerly of Sabetha, Kansas, formerly of Denison, Iowa, formerly of ... well you get the picture, entered into rest on Thursday, November 10, 2011 with his family by his side at the Veteran's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska due to complications associated with pulmonary fibrosis.
Eddie was born March 17, 1948, to Ivan and Dorothy (Reed) Eighmy in Lenox, Iowa. Eddie attended Fontanelle High School and completed his education in the service. He joined the Navy and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a boiler man on the U.S.S. Fox where he traveled the world and made life long friends.
Eddie married Cynthia Johnson on December 26, 1970 in Reno, Nevada which was appropriate since he always felt Cyndi had taken a gamble on him. They spent the first few years of their marriage starting a family in Griswold, Iowa and eventually ended up living in various locations through out the grain belt. During that time, Eddie became a pro at making refrigerator stew, turning baking sheets into snow sleds, and packing a home into a Ryder truck in 48 hours.
Eddie enjoyed stock car racing, building model airplanes and sleeping through his favorite TV shows. He liked to make others laugh and used humor to deflect stressful situations; a trait he handed down to each of his children.
Preceding Eddie in death were his father, Ivan and mother, Dorothy.
Left to tell entertaining and slightly embarrassing stories about him are his loving wife Cyndi Eighmy of Alco (Clarinda, Iowa); son, Rodney Eighmy of Villisca; daughters, Crystal Eighmy of Fargo, North Dakota and April Eighmy of Clarinda; grandchildren, Sebastian Eighmy of Clarinda and Wonk a doo and best friend Cha Cho of the kennel in the bedroom.
Eddie had a lot of friends, a lot of stories and a lot of hats he wore. He had worked a variety of jobs including welder, security guard, maintenance man at Mt. Pleasant Nursing Center, most recently a forklift operator and a full time vacation as his job. We will all remember him for different reasons and for the many roles he played in our lives. He was a son, brother, serviceman, husband, fireman, race car driver, father, grandfather, friend….however you remember Eddie you have to admit, he at least accomplished his goal of "living long enough to have made a lasting impression on us all.

Geer, Ethel May Yearous - Graveside services for Ethel May Geer, age 98, of Sunnyvale, California, formerly of Clarinda, Iowa who entered into peace Sunday, July 17, 2011 at Sunnyvale, California, were held Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa, with Reverend Harland Crane, Jr. officiating. Visitation with the family were held 5-7 p.m., Friday, July 22 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial was in the Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa.
In 1909 The Enlarged Homestead Act provided the spark for Raymond and Lena Yearous to take their two small children (Leslie 3yrs) and Margaret (6 wks) to Miller, South Dakota in pursuit of the American Dream. Due to devastating droughts and prairie fires, they were forced to return to southwestern Iowa to survive. Instead of a family of four, they were now a family of six. Gilbert had been born in Sept., 1910 and Ethel had been born August 16, 1912, only six weeks prior to the move. They moved almost annually the six years they lived in Page County. In 1918, they moved to a farm one and one-half miles northeast of New Market in Taylor County and lived there until 1939. During the years north of New Market, they attended a one-room country school where each attended one through eight. As Ethel was the youngest, they were able to send her to New Market High School from which she graduated in 1929. After graduation, she began teaching in a one-room rural school. She taught there until December 24, 1935 when she married Gurdon B. Geer (Shorty) in New Virgina, Iowa. She was married by Rev Clarence Moore, the husband of her cousin. The cousin and daughter of the Moore’s were the witnesses. After marriage, it was no longer permissible to teach so she became a devoted wife and mother. Her first child was born in 1938 and the second was born in 1941---both were girls. After the war started, Shorty sought work in the factories along the Mississippi River. He settled in East Moline, Illinois and Ethel bundled her girls and went by train to join him. It was always lonely for her there but by her mother's prompting she became active in the Methodist Church. She missed her close family and friends. Fortunately, several of Shorty’s family had also moved to the area so the family base just grew larger. When the war ended, they returned to southwest Iowa. They purchased and operated the Norwich store. In 1948, they sold the store and bought a farm two miles west of Bedford. While there, in addition to working. as an equal partner on the dairy farm.; she raised a huge garden, canned a year supply of fruits and vegetables, raised chickens and butchered and sold them to the local grocer, sewed clothes for her daughters and made sure her daughters knew how to swim (she had never learned and had a strong sense of fear when near the water). Her pastimes included needlework, playing hymns on the piano, playing board games, playing cards and dominos. She always enjoyed entertaining and at least once a week had guests for dinner.
Bedford suffered the droughts that had plagued South Dakota so it was decided to move back to East Moline. She was torn as her oldest daughter had recently married and had a new baby. She so desperately did not want to leave them or her family but she did make the move in 1955. She learned to camp, fish and ride in a boat. In 1959, she and Shorty were blessed with a son. Happy Days were here again only to be stifled when they discovered he had severe asthmatic attacks. After a particular harrowing attack, they relocated to Mesa, Arizona where they lived for ten years. When Shorty’s health began declining, they moved back to Clarinda, Iowa. Shorty lived in a nursing home prior to his death and she visited and cared for him every day that he was there. She resided in Clarinda until 1998 when she moved to California. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Gurdon (11/15/1979); brothers and sister, her daughter (Joyce Ellen Crane of Paris, Arkansas).
She is survived by two children: Marilyn of San, Jose, Ca. and Randall (Terrie) of Lincoln, Ne.; six grandchildren: Harland Crane Jr. (Dana), Thomas Crane (Tracy) of Paris, Arkansas, Raymond Crane (Nancy) of Platte City, Mo., Carol Leeper (Dale) of Trenton Mo., Jennifer Key of Scott, Arkansas, Lacey Lang of Lincoln, Ne; ten great grandchildren: Sara Fox (Paul), Hooter and Steven Crane, Troy Crane, Tommy Crane--all of Paris, Arkansas, Samantha Key and Jordon Key of Scott, Arkansas, Courtney and Elizabeth of Trenton, Mo.;Adam J Couglin of Lincoln, Ne., one great, great grandson, Wyatt Fox of Paris, Arkansas; many loving nieces and nephews
