from Arliss Powell - Arlissann80@comcast.net |
Amelia was born, daughter of Henry Saloman & Marie nee Hansen, and raised on a farm just across the road from her husband's family in Nodaway Twp., age Co., Iowa. She was a typical farm wife of her times raising chickens, having a big garden and canning fruits and vetetables. She loved to cook and often invited members of her husband's family for Sunday dinners. Food was always delicious. She often served cafeteria style. The men were not happy with this as the plates didn't balance on their knees very well. Those farmers quietly referred to it as "calf and steer" style. She cared for her handicapped daughter, trying often to teach her to read. Her husband said it usually ended up with Helen mad and crying and Amelia mad and with a headache. She was diagnosed with lung cancer and given two months to live. She did live 11 months. She died at home with family members caring for her. [written July 9, 2006] |
