Military services were held December 7, at Chancellor, S. Dak., for Pfc. Bertus John Jurgens, nephew of Mrs. Etta Christians, who was killed in action in France October 31. Inducted into the service December 7, 1942, he spent one year at Camp Claiborne, La., taking a course in radio and code and becoming proficient as a driver. During this time he enjoyed two furloughs with his home folks. He was then transferred to Camp Howze, Texas, where he remained until July, 1944, when he was sent to the east coast and port of embarkation, soon leaving for overseas service. He was first sent to Italy, and after two months he entered France on October 8. He was sent into the fighting zone about October 20. Bertus Jurgens had reached the age of 32 years, 11 months and 11 days. At the age of 10 years, he suffered the loss of his mother and in 1937 his father passed away.
