County Boy to Die in Action In France

...OVER SEASS IN JULY

From Lewistown, Montana, ....Member of 159th Infantry 40th Division

Reed Guthrie, son of Mrs. C.McDougall of Melvin was killed in .....France, October 5th, according to a message from the Adjutant General. Reed is the first Osceola county boy to be killed in action overseas.

The message received by his mother is as follows:

"Washington, D.C. Nov. 22
Mrs. Ella McDougall, Melvin, Ia

"Department regrets to inform you that Private Farrand Reed Guthrie is officially reported as killed in action October 5th.

"Harris, the Adj. General"

Reed joined the national army at Lewistown, Montana, about a year ago. He was entrained at American... and later completed his training at Camp Kearney, from where he was sent overseas. He belonged to the 159th Infantry, 40th division.

In his last letter to his mother he wrote enthusiastically of the work of Uncle Sam's boys, and his part in military activities. He referred to a predicament he had the day before, when a response to same he moved several yards, when a monster German shell struck the spot where he had just stood, tearing things to pieces, generally.

Reed Guthrie was born in Sibley, November 14, 1895. Here he attended school and spent his entire life with the exception of the last few years, when he lived at Melvin and Montana. He was bright, intelligent young man, respected by a host of friends who mourn the departure of one who made the supreme sacrifice, giving his life for your country.
