Mr. Best, who was a former Onawa citizen, will return to Onawa and work for Mr. Colby. He is a fine workman and a good citizen.

The Mapleton Press 5Jan1900 The Model Bakery has changed hands H.B. Best having sold to L. Nelson of Onawa who took possession yesterday. Mr. Best and family have moved to Onawa where he will take the place of Mr. Nelson in a bakery. In this exchange Mapleton loses a good citizen and an excellent family. Mr. Nelson is accompanied by his family and being an experienced baker, will keep the business up to a high standard of excellence. For the present they are not prepared to accomodate boarders.

Monona County Gazette 18Jan1900 Local News Wednesday at the residence of E.E. Bakke and wife a pleasant home wedding occurred when their oldest daughter, Louise A., was married to Rev. Aaron S. Johnson of Sioux Rapids IA. At 6PM the sweet strains of the wedding march played by Jennie Ballard announced the approach of the bride and groom with Agnes Bakke, sister of the bride, as maid of honor and Godfrey Johnson, brother of the groom as best man, took their places in front of the double windows in the west parlor. Rev. C.H. Hjortholm performed the ceremony which was witnessed by 65 of the immediate relatives and intimate friends of the contracting parties. Supper was served by Mrs. Oscar Bakke, assisted by Mrs. Nessle, Emma Andrews, Annie Peterson and Molly Kelly. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson left Thursday night for Elbow Lake MN where Mr. Johnson is pastor of the Norwegian church at that place. The following were the out of town guests: A. Gilbertson of Mapleton, Miss Aggie Bakke of Albaton, Mrs. Durman and Mollie Kelly of Whiting, Godfrey and Miss Anna Johnson, H.A. Johnson and wife, Mrs. Amon Johnson, Mrs. J.S. Barstadt and daughter of Sioux Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. B.R. Mickelson of Linn Grove, Mr. and Mrs. M. Christofferson, Thor, A. cyrpeanson of Eau Claire WI, P.A. Fione of Sloan.

Onawa Weekly Democrat 11Jan1900 Charles Otto was a caller at this office Monday morning. He came to Onawa in 1872 and rented a building standing where The Democrat office is now located. That winter he cut wood along the Missouri river and made about a dollar a day. He now owns a 44-acre well improved farm in Franklin township and is practically out of debt.

Howes manages such affairs smoothly enough indeed and Louis Payne comes in handy as a good assistant.

One day last week he delivered on truck here 5,000 head or 22,000 pounds of chickens which were shipped east to New York City.

Johnson of Sioux Rapids IA. At 6PM the sweet strains of the wedding march played by Jennie Ballard announced the approach of the bride and groom with Agnes Bakke, sister of the bride, as maid of honor and Godfrey Johnson, brother of the groom as best man, took their places in front of the double windows in the west parlor. Rev. C.H. Hjortholm performed the ceremony which was witnessed by 65 of the immediate relatives and intimate friends of the contracting parties. Supper was served by Mrs. Oscar Bakke, assisted by Mrs. Nessle, Emma Andrews, Annie Peterson and Molly Kelly. Monona County Gazette 25Jan1900 Local News At the trial of W.T. Popejoy and Frank Hurst Friday of last week the jury returned a verdict of guilty as charged -- the charge being in effect extortion. Both defendants were tried together and upon the return of the verdict by the jury were given until 12Feb1900 to file motion for new trial and 2 o'clock that day fixed for passing upon the motion or pronouncing judgment and sentence by the court. Ex-county Attorney B.F. Ross, by appointment of the court, defended Popejoy and Ed. L. Conlin by the same authority defended Hurst. County Attorney W.L. Smith prosecuted the case with energy while the defendant's attorneys stoutly contested every inch of the ground. It is stated by many who were present that Ed Conlin made an unusually able and touching address to the jury on behalf of defendant Hurst and that his remarks made a deep impression upon all who where privileged to hear him.

The funeral was held Tuesday at the Ticonic school house at 3 o'clock p.m. Rev. Clift of Smithland officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in the Grant cemetery. The bereaved ones have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.
