Cassady and wife last Friday to spend the evening with games and otherwise. The main feature of the eveing was the box supper which was furnished by the men and proved them artists of a high order as the supper was pronounced par excellent and was a great surprise to the ladies as they did not expect so much. The evening and supper proved so very enjoyable that they voted to have it repeated in the near future. The wives say it is a great relief to not have the bother of preparing the supper.

Johnson of Sioux Rapids IA. At 6PM the sweet strains of the wedding march played by Jennie Ballard announced the approach of the bride and groom with Agnes Bakke, sister of the bride, as maid of honor and Godfrey Johnson, brother of the groom as best man, took their places in front of the double windows in the west parlor. Rev. C.H. Hjortholm performed the ceremony which was witnessed by 65 of the immediate relatives and intimate friends of the contracting parties. Supper was served by Mrs. Oscar Bakke, assisted by Mrs. Nessle, Emma Andrews, Annie Peterson and Molly Kelly. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson left Thursday night for Elbow Lake MN where Mr. Johnson is pastor of the Norwegian church at that place. The following were the out of town guests: A. Booker about 2 years ago for $4000 and has made several hundred dollars worth of improvements. Mr. Circle will go to Oklahoma soon to look at the country and if he is favorably impressed with it will locate there. He is one of our best citizens and we hate to part with him. He makes the move for the benefit of his sons Elmer and Ira who have attained their majority and want farms.

On Saturday H.W. Cunningham who has been the obliging deputy County Auditor under Cody, McNeal and one year under Ellis, quit at the request of Mr. Ellis. As a deputy he was all that could be desired. His long service in the court house gave him a fine knowledge of the affairs of the county and no more efficient or obliging offical ever did business in the court house.

Mr. Spring, being a man of long experience in the hardware trade, will undoubtedly keep the new purchase going along the same general ?inea? Under the new management the store will continue in its present commodious quarters in the Colby brick building.

Monona County Gazette 25Jan1900 Local News At the trial of W.T. Popejoy and Frank Hurst Friday of last week the jury returned a verdict of guilty as charged -- the charge being in effect extortion. Both defendants were tried together and upon the return of the verdict by the jury were given until 12Feb1900 to file motion for new trial and 2 o'clock that day fixed for passing upon the motion or pronouncing judgment and sentence by the court. Ex-county Attorney B.F. Ross, by appointment of the court, defended Popejoy and Ed. L. Conlin by the same authority defended Hurst. County Attorney W.L. Smith prosecuted the case with energy while the defendant's attorneys stoutly contested every inch of the ground. It is stated by many who were present that Ed Conlin made an unusually able and touching address to the jury on behalf of defendant Hurst and that his remarks made a deep impression upon all who where privileged to hear him.

As a deputy he was all that could be desired. Monona County Gazette 18Jan1900 Local News Wednesday at the residence of E.E. Bakke and wife a pleasant home wedding occurred when their oldest daughter, Louise A., was married to Rev. Aaron S. Johnson of Sioux Rapids IA. At 6PM the sweet strains of the wedding march played by Jennie Ballard announced the approach of the bride and groom with Agnes Bakke, sister of the bride, as maid of honor and Godfrey Johnson, brother of the groom as best man, took their places in front of the double windows in the west parlor. Rev. C.H. Hjortholm performed the ceremony which was witnessed by 65 of the immediate relatives and intimate friends of the contracting parties. Supper was served by Mrs. Oscar Bakke, assisted by Mrs. Nessle, Emma Andrews, Annie Peterson and Molly Kelly. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson left Thursday night for Elbow Lake MN where Mr. Johnson is pastor of the Norwegian church at that place. The following were the out of town guests: A.
