Richard Rose
Died, at his home three miles southeast of Attica, Wednesday, April 7, Richard Rose, of a complication of diseases brought on by la grippe, aged 70 years.
He leaves a wife, three sons, and two daughters to mourn his loss. He was widely known and dearly loved by all who knew him. He was one of Marion county's earliest settlers, and for more that a quarter of a century he was a soldier of the cross, and just before he died he spoke to friends and neighbors and told them to meet him up yonder.

OBITUARY
A Record of the Week's Deaths Among Marion County People
GLENN
Matilda K. Glenn was born in Brown Co., Ill., Nov. 1, 1829, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T.R. Gregory, near Harvey, Ia., Aug 9, 1905, in her 76 year.
She was married to Richard Rose, March 22, 1855 and in the same year they removed to Marion county, Ia., to the farm on which she resided untill within a few months of her death.
To this union were born six children - three sons and three daughters - all of whom were constantly with her during her last illness, except one, Lizzie E., who died in 1881 at the age of 18. Her husband passed into the spirit world eight years ago, since which time she has resided with her children.
She united with the Christian church in 1867 and has ever since lived a humble christian life, ever ready to minister to the needy and suffering. During her last illness, she expressed her readiness to depart this life and enter that rest which is prepared for those who have faithfully followed in His footsteps.
Her life, though confined at thome, leaves upon her children a sweet fragrance, an heritage better than silver or gold. Her unselfish devotion, her love, her patience and her hope shall linger with us through life, and through death speak to us. And, after her life of toil and suffering, we think of her as having "Gone Home."
A large company of friends assembled at the Liberty church, in Liberty township, where the services were held, and with many floral wreathes expressed their esteem and love which they have for the exemplary Christian woman who had lived so many years in their midst.
The services were conducted by Rev. C.E. Fitzsimmons, pastor of the Durham M.E. Circuit, assisted by Rev. Mr. Tague, pastor of the Attica M.P. church. Interment in the Liberty cemetery.

Sarah S., daughter of Richard and Matilda Rose was born on the Rose homestead east of Attica, Iowa, February 20, 1861, and passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Worth Stroud, early on the morning of Setember 30, 1943, at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 10 days.
She was one of a family of five children. Two sisters, Elizabeth Rose and Mrs. Catherine Williams preceded her in death. Three brothers, T.E. and George H. Rose of Attica, Iowa and Charles I. Rose of Newton, Kansas, are left to mourn her loss. She was reared in a devout Christian home and at an early age was converted and united with the Christian church at the Greer schoolhouse. Later she transferred her membership to churches nearer her home and at the time of her death was a member of the Plymouth Presbyterian church. She will be greatly missed in her Sunday school class there and in the various activities of the church.
She received her education in the Black Oak school in Liberty township and became a successful teacher and taught in the rural schools of Shiloh and Union.
On October 13, 1881, she was married to Timothy R. Gregory of Knoxville, Iowa. To this union four children were born, a son and daughter who died in early infancy and Mrs. Jessie Stroud of Knoxville and Mrs. Ruth Reed of Indianola. Mr. and Mrs. Gregory established their first home in Knoxville, later purchasing a farm east of Attica; in 1893 they sold their farm and purchased their home in the Plymouth neighborhood where Mr. Gregory died April 4, 1918. A few years later she established a home in Knoxville, and resided there until her health failed, then she made her home with her daughters. The last eight years were spent inthe home of Mrs. Stroud, where she had the tenderest care.
Mrs. Gregory was a woman of sweetness and beauty of character, gentle, unassuming and sympathetic. The influence of her piety was felt by her children, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren and indeed by all who came in contact with her. Perhaps her neighborliness and helpfulness in time of sorrow and sickness was her outstanding trait. She kept her interest in the affairs of home and community until her final illness.

T. R. Gregory, who has spent his entire life in Marion county and has carried on general agricultural pursuits throughout his active business career, still resides upon his farm of two hundred and fifty acres on section 17, Clay township, but is now enjoying well earned retirement. His birth occurred in that township on the 6th of December, 1853, his parents being James T. and Harriet (Ridlen) Gregory, both of whom were natives of Indiana. They came to Iowa in 1846, the father entering a tract of land in Clay township, this county, whereon he built a log cabin which was his home for some years. In 1863 he removed to Knoxville, where both he and his wife passed away at the age of eighty-eight years and in the faith of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which they were devoted members. To them was accorded the rare pleasure of celebrating their seventieth wedding anniversary, and eight of their thirteen children are yet living. James T. Gregory gave his political allegiance to the democracy.
T. R. Gregory acquired his education in the common schools and remained at home until past twenty-seven years of age or until the time of his marriage. Following that important event in his life he started out as an agriculturist on his own account and in 1905 purchased the farm on which he now resides and which embraces two hundred and fifty acres of valuable land on section 17, Clay township. His undertakings as an agriculturist have been attended with a gratifying measure of prosperity and he is now living retired in the enjoyment of a comfortable competence.
As a companion and helpmate on the journey of life Mr. Gregory chose Miss Sarah S. Rose, a native of Marion county, Iowa, and a daughter of Richard and Matilda (Glenn) Rose, who were born in Kentucky and Illinois respectively. They came to Iowa in 1855 and located on a farm in this county which Mr. Rose secured with a Mexican land warrant, having served throughout the Mexican war. Both he and his wife remained on the property until called to their final rest. They had six children and five of the number survive. Mrs. Gregory, who taught school for some terms prior to her marriage, has become the mother of four children, as follows: one who died in infancy; Glenn, deceased; Jessie A., who had a high-school education and is now the wife of W. H. Stroud, of Clay township; and Ruth R., who is attending college at Pella.
Since age conferred upon him the right of franchise Mr. Gregory has supported the men and measures of the democracy, believing firmly in its principles. For some years he has served in the capacity of school director. The religious faith of Mr. and Mrs. Gregory is that of the Methodist Episcopal church. They have spent their entire lives in Marion county and are well known and highly esteemed as people of genuine personal worth.

Thomas E. Rose is a representative farmer of Liberty township, living on section 7. He was born on the adjoining section - the old homestead farm of the family - February 24, 1856, a son of Richard and Matilda (Glenn) Rose, the former a native of Kentucky and the latter of Brown county, Illinois. They were married in the latter district and as the years went on six children were added to the household, as follows: Thomas E., of this review; Catherine, who is the wife of Frank Williams, of Clay township, this county; Sarah, who gave her hand in marriage to Tim Gregory; Elizabeth, who died at the age of eighteen years; Charles I., who is a resident of Harvey county, Kansas; and George H., living on the old home place.
In October, 1855, the family home was established in Marion county, on a tract of land, two hundred and forty acres of which Mr. Rose had preempted a few years before. The father bent his energies to the development and improvement of the old home place and as they became old enough his sons assisted him in the farm work, and there Richard Rose passed away April 6, 1896, at the age of about seventy-five years, his birth having occurred June 1, 1821. His wife, who was born November 2, 1829, died in 1906, and they were laid to rest in Liberty cemetery. During the long years of their residence in this county they had become widely and favorably known and their memory is yet cherished by many. The father was a veteran of the Mexican war. He always carried on farming and stock-raising and his energy and determination enabled him to so successfully conduct his business that he provided a good living for his family. In politics he was a democrat and served as township trustee. He was much interested in public affairs, took a helpful part in advancing the welfare of the community and was among those who laid broad and deep the foundation upon which has been built the present progress and prosperity of the county. Both he and his wife were members of the Christian church and their lives constituted an example that any might well follow.
Thomas E. Rose was educated in one of the old-time log schoolhouses of the pioneer days and he shared with the family in all of the hardships and privations incident to pioneer life. He assisted in the arduous task of breaking the sod and developing new fields and as the years passed on his labors were attended with substantial success and brought to him the experience that enabled him to carry on his own farm work in a most capable manner. In March, 1884, he located upon his present place and is today the owner of two farms comprising one hundred and fifty-nine acres. He cultivates the cereals best adapted to soil and climate and also successfully engages in raising stock.
On the 17th of March, 1878, Mr. Rose was united in marriage to Miss Nancy E. Stephens, her parents being Cumberland and Sarah J. (Ridlen) Stephens, who came to this county in the '50s and spent the remainder of their lives in Liberty township. They had thirteen children, six of whom survive. To Mr. and Mrs. Rose have been born six children, as follows: Myrtle, who passed away in 1906; Seth; Lena, who gave her hand in marriage to Roy Sherman, of Oglesby, Illinois; Ruth, the wife of Worth Phelps, residing in Lyon county, Minnesota; Dwight; and Arminta.
Mr. Rose exercises his right of franchise in support of the men and measures of the democratic party but the honors and emoluments of office have had no attraction for him, as he has always preferred to devote his attention to his farming interests, with the result that success is now his in creditable measure and he ranks with the leading and representative farmers of the county.

B.H. Finch, assisted by Rev. John Turner. Interment in Liberty cemetery.

Life Story of-
THOMAS E. ROSE
Thomas Ezekial Rose was born Feb. 24, 1856 and died at his home near Bussey Jan. 15, 1954 at the age of 97 years 10 months and 21 days.
He was the eldest child of Richard and Matilda Glen Rose and lived his entire life in Marion County.
He was united in marriage to Nancy E. Stephens and his happy marriage continued for 67 years until the passing of Mrs. Rose on June 18, 1945.
Uncle Zeke, as he was so familiarly known, was always interested in public affairs though he never sought an office.
After retiring from active farming, reading was his hobby, but due to cataracts for a few months he was unable to read, but at the age of 96 had surgery, and was able to read again.
Besides an aged brother, Charles of Newton, Kans.; he leaves Seth and Arminta in the home, Dwight of Des Moines, Mrs. Worth Phelps, Amiret, Minn; Mrs. Oral Bassett, Milan, Mich; and Mrs. Roy Sherman, also several grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Bybee and Davis Funeral Home Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. B.H. Finch, assisted by Rev. John Turner. Interment was in Liberty Cemetery.

ROSE.
Myrtle, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Zeke Rose, residing 1 miles east of Attica, died at her home yesterday morning, Dec. 27, of consumption, aged 24 years. She had been sick for the past 7 years and in a serious condition for the past 11 months. Deceased was a niece of Mrs. J.T. Gregory, of this city, and of Mrs. Ruth Lowman of Bussey. She leaves father, mother, two brothers and three sisters. The funeral services will be held at Liberty church at 11:30 today. Interment in Liberty cemetery.

Services for Arminta Rose
Funeral services for Aminta M. Rose, who died March 2 at West Ridge Manor Nursing Home, were held March 5 from Bybee & Davis Funeral Home with burial in Liberty Cemetery. Rev. Kermit Gladfelder officiated.
Pallbearers were Leo Rose, Don McCay, Delno Pearson, Herbert Cline, Leonard Langstrast and Alfred Christensen Jr. Mrs. John Peters, organist accompanied Mrs. Max Harsin, soloist.
Arminta Merle, daughter of Thomas E .and Nancy Stephens Rose, was born June 7, 1899 on the farm near Attica where she spent her entire life. She attended Attica schools and graduated there in 1920. She and her brother operated the farm and she was active in 4-H and Farm Bureau. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Myrtle; and brother Dwight.
Surviving are one brother, Seth; three sisters, Mrs. Lena Sherman of Tracy, Mrs. Ruth Phelps of Slayton, Minn; and Mrs. Areta Bassett of Saline, Mich.

George H. Rose, living on section 6, Liberty township, was born on the farm which is still his home, his natal day being April 25, 1872. His parents were Richard and Matilda (Glenn) Rose. In his youthful days he worked in the fields when not busy with his text-books, his education being acquired in the public schools. He early became familiar with the best methods of tilling the soil and caring for the crops and he has engaged in general farming and stock-raising throughout his entire life. He keeps Durham cattle for his own use and he has other good grades of stock upon his place. The farm comprises two hundred acres of rich and arable land practically all cleared and under cultivation. He has made many improvements upon the farm, erecting all of the present buildings save the residence. The barns and outbuildings are substantial and give ample shelter to grain and stock and modern farm machinery and implements are used in the development of the fields. It was in 1904 that Mr. Rose purchased two hundred acres of the old homestead from the other heirs and since that time he has occupied and cultivated the farm.
On the 22d of April, 1896, Mr. Rose was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Hammond, a daughter of Jacob and Nancy (Beard) Hammond. A sketch of the father, a retired agriculturist residing in Clay township, appears on another page of this work. Mr. and Mrs. Rose have four children, as follows: Glenn, who was born February 18, 1899; Irma whose birth occurred on the 29th of July, 1900; Velma, whose natal day was February 27, 1907; and Merle, born August 12, 1909. The family is well known throughout Liberty township and this part of the county and Mr. and Mrs. Rose have a large circle of warm friends, while the hospitality of the best homes if freely accorded them.
In politics Mr. Rose is a democrat and gives to his party stalwart allegiance but does not seek nor desire office. On the contrary, he concentrates his efforts and energy upon the further development and improvement of his farm with the result that he has made it one of the valuable properties of this section of the state.

The funeral services for GEORGE H. ROSE, who died at the Collins Memorial Hospital, Knoxville, on Thursday, April 1, 1948, at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 6 days, will be held at the Bybee & Davis Funeral Home, on Saturday, April 3, at 1:30 o'clock p.m. conducted by Rev. B.F. Finch. Interment in Liberty cemetery.

George H. Rose
George H. Rose, son of Richard and Matilda Glenn Rose, was born April 25, 1872, on the farm of his parents who had entered their land from the government about 100 years ago, and where he had lived all his life with the exception of a short time.
The deceased was married to Mary Hammond of the same community, April 22, 1898. During the fifty-two years of their wedded life, they wree blessed with three sons, Glenn, Merle and Leo, and two daughters, Irma Rankin and Velma Moore. These with their wives and husbands, four grandsons and two granddaughters, with the widow survive. Two brothers, T.E. Rose and L.I. [sic- C.I.] Rose are also surviving. Three sisters preceded him in death.
During a revival held by Rev. Gray at Attica several years ago, the deceased was converted and lived a consistent Christian life all through the years.
George, as he was familiarly known, had suffered a severe illness for several years. All that medical skill and kind loving care could do was given him but on April 1, 1948, he quietly passed away at the Collins Memorial hospital, in Knoxville, at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 6 days.
Those attending the funeral, from a distance, were C.I. Rose of Newton, Kans., Mr. and Mrs. Dick Rose of Heston, Kans., Mr. and Mrs. Sammy Cooley, Centralia, Mo., and O.B. and Herman Hammond, of Bethany, Mo.
Funeral services were held from Bybee & Davis funeral home, Saturday afternoon, at 1:30 o'clock conducted by Rev. B.F. Finch, and interment was made in the Liberty cemetery.

Life Story of-
MARY JANE HAMMOND
Mary Jane Hammond, daughter of Jacob and Nancy Beard Hammond, was born Sept. 7, 1877, about eight miles east of Knoxville and lived her entire life in Marion County being active in the church and community work as long as her health would permit.
She died at Collins Memorial Hospital in Knoxville, Sept. 14, 1957 at the age of 80 years and 7 days.
On April 22, 1896 she was married to George Rose and to this union five children were born, Glen Rose near Attica, Mrs. Irma Rankin near Pleasantville, Mrs. Velma Moore and Merle Rose of Bussey, Leo Rose near Bussey, 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Her husband died April 1, 1948 and also three brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
She leaves one sister, Mrs. Umbra Cooley of Centralia, Mo., two brothers, Herman Hammond, of New Hampton, Mo., O.B. Hammond of Knoxville and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Sept. 17 from Bybee & Davis Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Glen Rose, who died Nov. 25 at his home on Route 1, Hamilton, were held Nov. 26 from Williams funeral home with Rev. Robert Aitken officiating. Burial was in Graceland cemetery.
Casketbearers were Galen White, Bernard Cline, Wesley Harvey, Lee nossaman, Marvin Bsnscoter and Worth Rankin Jr. Larry Goemaat was organist. Flowers were arranged by Mary Louise Roush and Velma White.
Glen, son of George H. and Mary Jane Hammond Rose, was born Feb. 18, 1899 at Bussey. He was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Harvey on April 6, 1921. He was a member of the Attica United Methodist Church. His parents preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; two sons, Harold Randall and Richard Lee of the Attica area; two brothers, Merle of Bussey and Leo of Norfork, Ark; and two sisters, Mrs. Worth Rankin of Pleasantville and Mrs. Ray Moore of Knoxville.

Services for Mary Elizabeth Rose, 91, of Knoxville, who died March 2, 1990 at Griffin Nursing Home, were held March 5 at Evans-McCleery Funeral Home.
Interment was in Graceland Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dennis, Ronald, Don and Darl Rose, Terry Lambirth and Doug Phipps.
Mrs. Rose was born on June 8, 1898, at Knoxville, the daughter of Wesley and Eva Busenburg Harvey.
She attend Rising Star Country School.
On April 6, 1921, at Knoxville, she married Glen Rose.
She was a homemaker and a long time member of the Attica United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers; one sister; and two great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Randol and Richard, both of Knoxville; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Effie Harvey of Knoxville, Edith Nossaman of Leighton, and Ethel Benscoter of Oskaloosa.

Funeral services for Velma B. Moore, 94, of Knoxville, who died on Wednesday, April 4, at Knoxville Area Community Hospital, were held on Saturday, April 7, at Bybee & Davis Funeral Home. Rev. Samuel Subramanian officiated at the services. Music was provided by Jim Kidder, organist and Katie Davis, vocalist.
Interment was at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bussey. Casketbearers were Dan Zager, Maja Clayton, Worth Rankin, Jr., Max Rose, Scott Zager and Ray Bertrand.
Velma was born on February 27, 1907, on the family farm near Attica, the daughter of George Henry Rose and Mary Jane (Hammond) Rose. She graduated from Attica High School with the class of 1925.
She married Ray B. Moore on March 17, 1929. They lived on a farm east of Bussey. In 1952 Velma and Ray sold the farm and moved to Bussey. They operated a restaurant on the Knoxville square from 1958 to 1960. In 1967 the couple moved to Knoxville to work for Bybee & Davis Funeral Home until 1977. For the last few years Velma had lived at the West Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She enjoyed baking and cooking for her family and friends and always had enough for one more at the table.
Velma and Ray were not able to raise a family of their own, but they became a mother and father, and grandmother and grandfather to many people who adopted them as part of their family.
Velma was a member of the Bussey United Methodist Church and had been a long time member of the Bussey Women's Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ray in 1982; infant daughter, Donna Mae; three brothers, Glen, Merle, and Leo Rose; and a sister, Irma Rankin.
She is survived by five nephews, Worth Rankin of Pleasantville, Dick and Randall Rose of Knoxville, Dave Rose of Caufield, Mo. and Max Rose of Fayetteville, Ark.; a niece, Mary Earney of Texas; her adopted family, Jerry and Judy Zager of Knoxville and their children, Scott Zager, Barb Zager, Mike Zager, Larry Bertrand, Maja Clayton, Ray Bertrand and Dan Zager, and many other family members and a host of friends.
Memorials may be made to the Bussey United Methodist Church.
Arrangements were made by Bybee & Davis Funeral Home.

Leo V. Rose
Services for Leo V. Rose, 72, of Mountain Home, Ark., who died Nov. 28, were held Dec. 1 at the Kirby Funeral Home Chapel.
Rev. Paul Huskey officiated at the services.
Leo V. Rose was born to May Jane Hammond Rose and George Rose on Dec. 20, 1917 near Attica on the Rose farm.
He graduated from Attica School. He married Dorothy Swan on April 1, 1945 and the couple moved to Arkansas in 1958 where they owned and operated Roses Trout Dock and Motel until 1981.
Dorothy and Leo had three sons, Ray, David and Max. Ray was killed June 2, 1973.
Leo was very active in his community and was always helping someone in need.
Leo is survived by his wife Dorothy, two sons, David and Max, four grandchildren, and two sisters, Irma Rankin and Velma Moore of Knoxville.
