Few men in the service have seen more action in a shorter time did Pvt. Raymond E. Grotewold, who was killed in action in Italy on July 2, 1944.Grotewold had seen action on Anzio Beachhead and had been returned to his tank company and resumed fighting. His death followed some two weeks after he had returned to duty.
BORN AT LARCHWOOD
Pvt. Raymond E. Grotewold was born at Larchwood July 6, 1917, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Grotewold. He was educated in the Larchwood public schools and later worked with his father on the farm west of Larchwood.
He was inducted on January 12, 1943 at Camp Dodge. He had basic training at Ft. Knox, Ky., in the armored replacement center and was later sent to Camp Campbell, TN. and from there to Greenville, Pa.
IN ITALY
Grotewold landed in North Africa in June 1943 and from there went to southern Italy. He was attached to a tank outfit which was in the heaviest fighting and saw much service on the Anzio beachhead. In the fighting there he was wounded. After he had returned to his unit he participated in actions for two weeks more and then reported missing in action. Later work came from the war department that he had been killed.
Surviving are his parents, four brothers, LeRoy, Harry, Harvey, and Andy, all of Larchwood, and two sister, Leona and Gladys, at home.
Grotewold had many friends. One of them told the following incident as typical of the high type of manhood he represented. He said that when Grotewold was inducted and was interviewed as to where he wanted to serve, he told the officer he had no preference. He said that he wished to be put wherever the goverment felt he could be of greatest service to his country.
RETURN BODY OF PVT. RAYMOND GROTEWOLD
The body of the late Private Raymond E. Grotewold is being returned from Italy aboard the U.S. army transport Lawrence Victory, scheduled to reach New York November 5, 1948.
Next of kin are Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Grotewold of Larchwood.
COMMITTAL SERVICE
A committal service will be held Friday Nov. 19, 1948 (postponed to Nov. 20 because of the storm), afternoon at two o'clock at the Larchwood cemetery for the body of Pvt. Raymond E. Grotewold. The Larchwood Legion post will conduct the military rites.
Pvt. Grotewold was killed in action July 2, 1944. Probably few men in the service saw more action in a shorter time than Pvt. Grotewold. He was wounded while in action on the Anzio beachhead. He was hospitalized for several weeks, and then returned tohis tank company and resumed fighting. His death followed some two weeks later.
At the time of his death he was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Grotewold of Larchwood; four brothers, LeRoy, Harry, Harvey, and Andy; and two sisters, Leona and Gladys.
Memorial service was held at Larchwood in June 1945.
Flesener Post NO. 561 was in charge of the services. Rev. Robinson gave the message at the Larchwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dwayne, Dwight and Melvin Grotewold, Dwayne Rabey, Lawrence Naugle, and Gene McMonagle. Auxiliary members served lunch in the Grotewold home after services.

- Harry Moser Moser, Harry E. -- was born to John and Rose Moser on September 22, 1923 at Larchwood, Iowa. He entered the Armed Forces September 22, 1944 receiving his training at Camp Robinson, Arkansas and was attached to the 136th Infantry Regiment. He served in the Philippines and was killed in action in Luzon on May 13, 1945. His remains were sent home for burial in the Apostolic Christian cemetery at Lester, Iowa in 1948. His memory is recognized by the Lester Legion Post 683.
