ENGELMAN, HENRY was born in 1869 and came to Larchwood from Ireton, Iowa, in the winter of 1915-16 with the Rudolph Rentschler family. They traveled in a midwinter snowstorm, driving a team of horses hitched to a wagon loaded with possessions. Henry owned the meat market in Larchwood, where his homemade bologna was a delight to his customers. There were two Engelman sons, George and William. William has been teaching at a high school in Nogales, Arizona for the past 28 years and will retire this year to live in San Jose, California. George served in the navy for 26 ½ years and in the Asiatic Fleet in World War II. He and his wife had two sons, Richard and Ed. George was killed at the age of 49 in an automobile accident in 1954. His wife had preceded him in death; therefore, William, who had never married, raised George's two sons. When Richard was 18, he enlisted in the marines. He was seriously injured in Vietnam and after being released from the hospital, he returned to the battlefront, where he was killed. Henry continued in the meat market business in Larchwood until his death in 1933. On his tombstone is inscribed, "He loved children and was kind to animals."
