David J. Forsythe 24th Iowa, Co. G
David Forsythe was born in 1846 in the state of Ohio. He later took up residence in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. At the young age of seventeen he enlisted, as a private, in the 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on December 22, 1863, a year after the regiment was raised, and mustered in on January 7, 1864. The regiment had its winter quarters at Madisonville, but when the winter ended, it took part in the Red River Campaign in March of 1864. In September, David took part in the Battle of Winchester, and in October he fought in the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia. It was during this battle, on October 19, 1864, that he was wounded. He survived the wound and mustered out with the rest of the regiment on July 17,1865 in Savannah, Georgia. The regiment was sent to Davenport, Iowa, via Baltimore, and from there, David returned to Cedar Rapids. He died on December 14, 1874, and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. He is commemorated by a government marker.
