Roster of 24th Iowa Infantry Formed in Linn County, Iowa The Twenty-fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry was raised during the first two weeks of August, 1862, and was in rendezvous at Camp Strong, Muscatine, Iowa, before the end of the month. On September 14th, the regiment was uniformed, and on the 18th was formally mustered into the United States service by Capt. H. B. Hendershott. Grant's Coldwater Expedition and movement by boat up the White River as far as Duvall's Bluff. April 11, 1862; Left Helena to take part in Grant's Vicksburg Campaign. May 1, 1862; First baptism of fire at the battle of Port Gibson. May 16, 1862; The Battle of Champion Hill or Edward's Station. Moved to Vicksburg and shared in the siege, accompanying Gen. Sherman on his march on Jackson. August 1, 1862; Proceeded to New Orleans, finding its first active duty there with Gen Bank's Teche Expedition. 1863-64 Winter Quarters at Madisonville. March 13, 1864; Red River Campaign. April 8, 1864; Battle at Sabine Cross Roads. June 13, 1864; Returned to New Orleans, and soon started by ocean steamer to Washington D.C. Battle of the Shenandoah Valley. September 19, 1864; Battle of Winchester. October 1864; Battle of Cedar Creek. January 14, 1865; Left Baltimore for Savannah, GA, then Morehead City, and Goldsboro, NC. June 25, 1865; Mustered out of service at Savannah, GA.
