It didn't
take long in the newly developed Linn County for criminals to
appear. In the Spring of 1840 a log jail was built in
Marion. The first prisoner was installed within it for
horse stealing before the logs had been laid higher than his
shoulders. 1878

IOWA STATE REGISTER, Tuesday,
August 23, 1881:
"A birth occurred in the county jail at Cedar Rapids a few days
ago. Mother and child are both doing well. Lena Stanton, who was
sent up for horse stealing, was the mother."
