Dickenson Cemetery
(Old Palo Cemetery)
Fayette Township

Old Cemetery with the town of Palo in the background.

The Dickenson Cemetery is easiest to find by taking Blairs Ferry Rd. from Cedar Rapids. At the Palo 4-way stop, go straight and take a right on Hollenbeck Rd. The cemetery is visible a short distance from Blairs Ferry Rd. on the right.

All of the Dickenson Cemetery gravestones visible have been photographed
and are now on display at the IAGenWeb Gravestone Photo Project:

Note: Because this cemetery is one of the oldest in Linn County, the stones are often very difficult to read and errors may exist.  Also, since there are many large spaces between grave markers, it can be assumed that others were buried here who are not listed on this page.  Check below for stones not identified here due to their poor condition.

Please let us know if you can identify any of these badly worn or broken markers.

E-mail the Linn County Coordinator.  Be sure to include the name of the cemetery & photo number with your reply.

Researcher Contributed Cemetery Notes:

* These were the children of John Clark Weatherwax and Charlotte Fuller. The last time I was there, there was another headstone beside it which had a J.G Weatherwax and another headstone that was buried in tree roots (see photo at right).

Contributed by Bob Barker, Lynchburg, TN (from the Weatherwax family line in Linn County) rcbarker@cafes.net

Carrie L. Murray, daughter of A.M. and E.J. 1 Aug 1870 5 mo 11 da. (Alexander and Eliza Jane (Morris) Murray-dau/of Stephen, sister of Joshua Morris buried Dickenson as well. Note: Alexander brother of (Robert) Bruce Murray buried Strawn Cemetery.) This baby is buried there.

I think also buried there is Jemima Morris Fletcher also a dau/of Stephen. She probably died about 1870. Perhaps one of the unknown stones...?

Contributed by Virginia Alvord Bennison, 05 Aug 2011:

I just visited the broken stones pictures on the website. Some of the broken stones are probably my ancestors. Several years ago I wrote and was sent a copy of the burials of my family. The following is what I received: ALVORD, Rachel A. dau of M & P d. 25 May 1861 ae 21-10-14 + ft.st."R.A".; ALVORD, John W. son of M&P d. 25 April 1858 ae 10-0-24; ALVORD, Archibald son of M&P d May 1858 ae 12-1-7 (These 3 Alvord stones were all down)

NOTE: ae stands for AGE (the three numbers indicate yrs-mos-das)

These Alvord children were the children of Menzo and Polly Alvord who lived in Benton, Iowa. These Alvords were children of my 2nd Great Grandfather, Menzo Alvord.
