MRS. BATTERSON, PIONEER
IN SENECA TWP., IS DEAD
Lone Rock, Dec. 27—Nancy A. Morgan was born February 19, 1834, at Lockport, Pa., and died at
Cherokee December 22, 1921, having been sick only two weeks.
When she was a small girl she came to Iowa with her parents, and lived in Washington county,
where she was married to Abijah Batterson on the 7th of November, 1859. To this union were born
seven children, three of whom have preceded their mother in death. The living children are:
Abijah, of Vesta, Minn.; Mrs. Hugh Bronson, of Bancroft; Mrs. E. L. Mantor, of Cedar Falls; and
Mrs. M. E. Blanchard, of Lone Rock.
Mr. and Mrs. Batterson moved to Kossuth county in the fall of 1876 and lived in Seneca township
until Mr. Batterson died in December, 1884, after which time Mrs. Batterson made her home with
her children most of the time.
Mrs. Batterson’s funeral was held at the Baptist church at Bancroft on Saturday, December 24, at
11 o’clock a.m., after which the remains were laid to rest in the Seneca cemetery. The funeral was
conducted by the Rev. S.M. Gladstone, of Lone Rock.

Frank McCowien was in town last Saturday with his chest inflated and telling the boys what a heck of a
baseball pitcher he was. Our reporter in writing up the Whittemore-Bancroft game had him slated as pitcher
instead of Frank O’Dell, who really officiated. It is rumored that Frank spends most of his evenings
practicing drops, curves etc., and is going to attempt to live up to the reputation he has as a ball player.

A marriage of interest to many friends throughout the state occurred at "The Little Brown Church in the
Vale," Nashua, Iowa, when Nellie Carrel became the bride of William I. Moon on Sunday, October 29,
1922. The ceremony was performed just at dusk by Rev. McDonald of Waterloo, before a small gathering
of intimate friends and relatives, Alice Carrel Steele, only sister of the bride, Irma Hurlbert, Lyle S. Steele
and Dr. W. A. Young attending the couple.
The bride is the beautiful and charming daughter of Mrs. A. Delia Carrel and grand-daughter of the late
Barnet Devine who for many years was one of our best known citizens and a pioneer of Kossuth county.
She grew to womanhood in Algona, attended our public schools and for several years was a very successful
teacher in this county. The bride is in every way most suited to be a worthy helpmate to the man of her
choice. The groom is the son of Mrs. Martha Clay Moon of Joplin. Missouri, and at present a resident of
Des Moines, Iowa, where he is President of the Mutual Live Stock Insurance Company and is meeting with
splendid success. Many Algona friends of the bride will join in the congratulations. Mr. and Mrs. Moon

HUGH BRONSON, NORTH
END FARMER, IS DEAD
Hugh E. Bronson, one of the early settlers of Seneca township, also one of the well known men in Kossuth
county, died suddenly last Thursday. Mr. Bronson's death was undoubtedly due to a stroke of apoplexy. He
got up that morning, and was feeling about as usual until the middle of the forenoon, when he went back to
bed, complaining of not feeling well. Shortly afterwards his wife went to inquire how he was getting along,
and found he was dead.
