As James Devine and family were returning home last Sunday evening on the grade west of town, their

lights suddenly went out. They met several cars and one came up from behind, and Mr. D. drove to the side

and stopped and it passed. They then started on but did not realize in the dark that they were nearing the

edge of the grade, and their car turned over. Mr. D's. knee was hurt and the little two-year-old boy's ankle

was sprained, Mrs. D's. shoulder and face were scratched and bruised, and her mother, Mrs. Holdren, who

was with them, had her right side badly bruised. They feel that they are indeed very fortunate that they were

not more seriously injured.

THE DEVINE LAND SALE.

1311.72 Acres Sold, All to the Heirs Except

One Piece—Sells Cheap.

The Barney Devine land sale was held at the court house door last Saturday by auction. A large number of

farmers and others attended, but the bidding was left mainly to the heirs. It was a cash sale, and that fact

tended to hold down prices, and the further fact that some persons did not like to bid against the heirs

worked to the same effect. Some lots went cheap because they lay adjoining the river and were subject to

overflow or were rough.

George Devine bought the S. E. of 13 and the S. E. of 24 in Riverdale township, the first for $131 and the

second for $127 an acre.

Clara Devine bought the E. ½ of the S. W. of 13 and N. W. of S.W. of 13, and lot 2 in 13 and 2 in 14,

aggregating 191.96, for $88 an acre, and also lot 3 in 14 being 40.17 acres, at $39 an acre.

Charles Wernert bought lot 1 in 14 and lots 4 and 5 in 23, consisting of 109.02, at $40 an acre. Also lot 1 in

23 and lot 3 in 24 and lots 1 and 2 in 26 -97.16, acres, at $29 an acre.

Ellen McCowien bought the E1/2 of the S, W. of 24 and the N. W. of the S. W. of 24, and lots 1 and 2 in

24,--164.3 acres, at $79 an acre.
