A. F. White, of DeSmet, South Dakota, with his wife, a daughter of the late Matt Frielinger, attended the

Frielinger funeral in Algona last week. All of the children were present but Barney, who was unable to

come from his home in New Mexico. Chas. F. Frielinger came from Waite Park, Minnesota, and the other

boys were already here. The children of Mr. Frielinger wish the Upper Des Moines Republican to extend

their thanks to the friends who rendered assistance and sympathy in their time of sorrow.

It is reported that Barney Devine is quite ill from complaints incident to great age. He is past 90 years old.

Matt Freilinger made this office a pleasant visit last Friday. Mr. Freilinger formerly lived west of Bancroft

in Seneca, but for the past eight years has been living at Estancia, New Mexico. At present he is staying at

the home of his brother Peter near Livermore. Mr. Freilinger still owns about 200 acres of land in this

county and says Iowa has them all beaten in every way.

FARM NEWS AND COMMENT

Peter Lenertz, of the Barney Devine farm southwest of Irvington, has lived five years on this farm, and now

he has leased it for five years more. This speaks well for Mr. Lenertz as a farmer. A long term lease is

usually the best for both parties interested.

Barney Devine has been quite ill for some weeks. Sunday morning he suffered a light paralytic stroke. He


has been failing since the first one came some months ago. He is about 90 years old.

Mrs. J. W. McCowien was called to Algona Monday night by the serious illness of her father, Mr. Barney

Devine. Mr. Devine is well known throughout the county being one of the oldest settlers, and his many

Funeral Held Sunday Under Auspices of Masonic Lodge--Burial Made at Irvington.

For several months it has been known that Barney Devine, the pioneer and well known extensive

land owner of Kossuth county, was in a critical condition and that the end was near. He has been

living with his daughter in the south part of the city in the old home of John G. Smith. During the
