"HARPER NINE"
In 1887 Harper men formed a baseball team. They called themselves the "Harper Nine". Records show they did quite well for themselves, playing such teams as the "Moddocks", Seventy- Six Nine and Keota. In 1880 they organized and sponsored a dance in Bakers Hall for the benefit of the Club.
HARPER BASEBALL
Since the town
was incorporated there has been a baseball team. In the late 1880's
there was a team called the "Harper Nine". Through the years there have
been other teams with adult men playing. Present day baseball is played
in back of St. Elizabeth church on the Harper baseball diamond. There
is always a good turnout at all the games. We have three teams at the
present. The Peewees, Little League, and Pony League. Each year there
is a tournament with different towns taking their turns hosting the
event. We have a "pop stand" which does a thriving business. They sell
pop, hot dogs, candy & gum. Audrey Gretter has been in charge of
this venture for the past several years. Usually in August there is a
baseball picnic for all players and their families, with free pop and
candy for all the children.
