M. Andrews was born 1878 in Cedar Rapids. Her father was John Andrews
and her mother was Mattie Bishop. Leffee Andrews married Albert K.
Johns. He was born December 25, 1859, in Kentucky, and died 1913 in

Albert and Leffee had two
children: Helen Dorothy Johns, born April 11, 1910, in Omaha, NE, and
Albert Lester Johns, born August 8, 1912, in Sioux City, IA. Upon the
death of her husband Leffee could not support herself and her children
as a laundry lady. As the result, she put her children in the Sunshine
Mission in Cedar Rapids, IA for care and adoption. Hoping to be joined
again with her children some day. She died in 1930.
Helen Dorothy
Johns was adopted by Dr. Frank W. and Alice Port of Olin, IA, in March
24, 1917. Helen graduated from Olin High School and married Dr. Samuel
Coy Benadom. They moved to California to begin his medical practice.

Benadom and Emmet (Johns) Stivers were eventually told about their
adoption. Both adopting parents kept them apart during their school
years. Emmet was sent to Anamosa for his schooling to make it difficult
for them to meet.
Our father told us later in his retirement
years that he found ways to meet with his sister. When he moved to
Phoenix he traveled to California several times to visit his sister and
her family. Helen would make periodic visits to Iowa to visit his
children. Both made a trip to Dutton, Montana to visit their mother's
grave and to install a marker.
The children of Emmet and Helen
hold their adoption papers, the letters their mother wrote to the
adopting parents, and pictures of their grandmother.

Staivers, Stuyverszler, Stuyverse: John Stivers), born 1678 in
