WILLIS LEVIS DIES IN NEW YORK - Formerly Miss Kos, of Iowa City, died Thanksgiving Day, of pneumonia, following influenza. According to her request, she was buried in Sleepy Hollow cemetery, near Tarrytown on the Hudson, New York. 6 Dec 1918 – DEATH OF JOHN KLEIN SHOCKS HILLS PEOPLE 6 Dec 1918 – IN MEMORY OF HENRY ZAK 6 Dec 1918 - Miss Margaret Bulechek died this week at Cedar Rapids. She was the daughter of Mrs. M. F. Simitz of Lone Tree and will be mourned by many friends in the southern part of Johnson county. 7 Dec 1918 - BEN W ABBOTT DIED LAST NIGHT 7 Dec 1918 - WILLIAM HEGARD DIES IN HOSPITAL William Hegard, from Alvard, Iowa, died in a local hospital, December 5. He was 32 years of age and was a member of Alvard lodge No. 533, I.O.O.F. The funeral was held at Harmon's undertaking parlors, yesterday at 2:30 and the services were conducted by the Odd Fellows. Burial took place in the I.O.O.F. lot in Oakland cemetery. 7 Dec 1918 - DR. WILLIAM SUITS HOSFORD DIES; VICTIM OF DREAD PNEUMONIA 7 Dec 1918 – JOHN W PORTER DIED IN OSKALOOSA John W. Porter died in Oskaloosa of pneumonia with complications. His father, Charles Porter, and grandfather, John W. Porter, were both former residents of Iowa City. The young man’s mother was Miss Maude Van Fleet of Iowa City. He was 26 years old and had been in the service of the government in the aero plane department, having just lately returned to his home. He was engaged in the lumber business and was a young man with a wide acquaintance. Friends mourn with this family because of their sudden bereavement. 9 Dec 1918 - HENRY BUMGARDNER DIED SATURDAY Henry Bumgardner, son of V. B. Bumgardner died Saturday morning. At his home in Oasis. Influenza was the cause of his death. He was about 27 years of age and was engaged in business with his father in a general store in Oasis. Surviving him are his wife and one child with whom many friends will sympathize. The funeral was held this afternoon. 9 Dec 1918 - DEATH CLAIMS PAUL C M’GINNIS Paul Charles McGinnis died at an early hour this morning of pneumonia following influenza. The end came at a local hospital where the stricken man had been taken a short time before. He leaves a wife in this city to mourn the sad event. The deceased had been for the last six months in the employ of Louis Schump as a truck driver. The remains will be taken to Lone Tree this evening for burial sometime tomorrow. 9 Dec 1918 - MISS MARY BRADLEY DIED THIS MORNING 9 Dec 1918 - DAVID STIMMEL DIES IN PUEBLO, COLO 9 Dec 1918 – Walter Harvey and family mourn the loss of their only son Raymond Harvey, aged 5 years, who died Tuesday of pneumonia. Besides the parents he leaves two sisters, Lillian, age 8, and Beulah about one and one half years. Funeral services were held at the Wellman cemetery at 2 pm conducted by Rev. Warren, Christian minister from Keota. 10 Dec 1918 – John Militech of Lovilia, Iowa died Sunday of influenza at a local hospital. He was 26 years old. 10 Dec 1918 – Mrs. Sophia Maher of Ft. Dodge, aged 45 years, died at a local hospital of influenza on Saturday night. 10 Dec 1918 – Virginia Bond has returned from Estherville where she attended the funeral of the late Christine Olsen. 10 Dec 1918 – MORRIS MANDEL DIES OF PARALYSIS – Morris Mandel died last Friday from the effects of a paralytic stroke, at his home, 421 South Madison Street. He leaves a widow and his son, __? __ Mandel, a business man of Iowa City and three daughters. Mr. Mandel had been ill two weeks and was 68 years old. The funeral was held from the home on Sunday. 10 Dec 1918 – MISS MARY BRADLEY LAID TO REST – The funeral of Miss Mary Bradley was held this morning from the home of her parents, Attorney and Mrs. Stephen Bradley, south Clinton Street. The funeral was private, with interment in St. Joseph’s cemetery. 10 Dec 1918 - TWO DIE - Mrs. Sadie Beatty, nursing her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Paul McGinnis was stricken and died of pneumonia, folllowing Spanish influenza, in Iowa City. Her son-in-law died six hours later. Her daughter is dangerously ill. DILLER DIED YESTERDAY 11 Dec 1918 Wed, pg. 8 - WILLIAM SELZTER OF MONROE TWP. DEAD Sunday evening occurred the death of William Selzter at the Mercy Hospital at Cedar Rapids. He was ill with the “Flu” only four days. He leaves to mourn his untimely death his father, two sisters, Mrs. Mike Bowler and Oscar Belmont and three brothers all in service overseas. The family has the sympathy of the neighborhood. 11 Dec 1918 Wed, pg. 8 - Mrs. Clarence Steadman died at Cedar Rapids Saturday after an illness of ten days with the “Flu”. She leaves to mourn her husband, three sisters and two brothers. She was a lovable woman and well like by all who knew her. The people in this community deeply sympathize with the family at this darkened hour. 11 Dec 1918 - YOUNG GIRL PASSES AWAY. Miss Lorena Eden passed away yesterday morning at the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. George Eden of Lone Tree. Her death was due to pneumonia super induced by Spanish influenza. The funeral announcements have not been arranged yet. 11 Dec 1918 – MISS MARY NIFFENEGGER PASSED AWAY 11 Dec 1918 – INFANT DAUGHTER DIED YESTERDAY The infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George W. Baines, of Scott Township passed away at 6 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, after three days illness with influenza. Surviving are the parents, two brothers and one sister. A private funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon, with interment in Brick Chapel cemetery. The bereaved family have the sympathy of friends and neighbors. 11 Dec 1918 – JOSEPH NOVOTNY DIES NEAR SHUEYVILLE Joseph Novotny, a young farmer of Johnson County died at his home near Shueyville. He was 29 years old and leaves a widow and one son. The funeral was held yesterday. Reverend Frank Pokorny conducting the services. Interment was in the Sulek cemetery. Mr. Novotny was a member of the community all his life and a large circle of friends will sympathize with the family in the loss of a beloved husband. 11 Dec 1918 – HARRY OWEN DIES OF PNEUMONIA IN FRANCE 12 Dec 1918 – MRS. JOSEPHINE WINEKE DIED NEAR WEST BRANCH 12 Dec 1918 – FRANCISCO AZALOS DIED LAST NIGHT – Francisco Azalos died last night on south Dodge Street in the Mexican colony. He was about thirty years of age and died of pneumonia following influenza. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o’clock from Harmon’s chapel. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s cemetery. 12 Dec 1918 – Frank Pierce – Grandma Yoder, mother of Mahlon T. Yoder died very suddenly Monday about noon. 12 Dec 1918 – Frank Pierce – Several from this vicinity attended the funeral of Mrs. Isaac Marner Monday afternoon which was held at the timber church. 12 Dec 1918 – Frank Pierce – Miss Mildred Ihrig, daughter of Homer Ihrig, who has been attending high school at Wellman, died at the home of her parents northwest of town Tuesday afternoon of influenza. 12 Dec 1918 – Morse – JAMES WANICK IS DEAD AT MORSE – James Wanick, Jr. passed away Sunday December 18 of pneumonia. It had followed a case of flu. He was about 20 and the son of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Wanick. 12 Dec 1918 - (SOLON) DEATH IN COLORADO OF MRS. GEO. BROSH 12 Dec 1918 – The funeral services of the late Marguerite Bulechek were held Saturday morning from the family home in Cedar Rapids. Interment being made here in Oak Hill cemetery. 12 Dec 1918 – Mrs. Fred Temple of Lone Tree died Friday night 13 Dec 1918 – MRS. JOHN REILAND DIES IN MINNESOTA 14 Dec 1918 – The funeral of Miss Ella Miller will be held in Oxford tomorrow, and will be private. 14 Dec 1918 – MISS GERARD DIED IN BRIGHTON, COLO. A message has been received stating that Miss Genevieve Gerard, a niece of Mrs. Olivia Williamson, of south Lucas Street, died Thursday in Brighton, Colorado, a suburb of Denver. The cause of her death was pneumonia. Further details have not yet been given. 14 Dec 1918 – JOHN A. HELEN BLOWERS DIED SATURDAY 16 Dec 1918 - MISS IRENE FISHER LAID TO REST TODAY 17 Dec 1918 – Mrs. Michael Beecher died last night at her home in Solon. She leaves a husband and three children. 17 Dec 1918 – Mrs. John Beeson and Mrs. Jas. Luscombe have been called to Des Moines to attend the funeral of their nephew who died yesterday. Their sister also, mother of the dead boy, is seriously ill and recovery seems improbable. 17 Dec 1918 - AN OBITUARY OF MRS. TOBIAS YODER 17 Dec 1918 – FRANK FRACKER DIED AT CHICAGO 17 Dec 1918 – MISS GLADYS CARR DIED IN HOSPITAL Miss Gladys Florence Carr, died at Mercy hospital of Pleura-pneumonia, following influenza. She was a student at the University, and was a Currier Hall girl. She was eighteen years of age, and was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J.E. Carr of Popejoy, Iowa. Surviving her are her parents, four sisters and one brother. The remains will be sent to the home at Popejoy this evening. Burial will take place at Alden, Iowa. 17 Dec 1918 - SISTER MARY LUCITA OF SIOUX CITY DIES A message has been received by relatives, Mrs. W. J. Hotz, and Mrs. J. J. Hotz, of the death of Sister Mary Lucita, of Sioux City, on December 16, pneumonia following influenza being the cause of her death. She will be recalled by her Iowa City friends as Miss Agnes Hermann, daughter of Mrs. Lucy Hold-Herman. 18 Dec 1918 – ARLO BURNETT PASSED AWAY Arlo Burnett, son of Charles Burnett, died about 5 o’clock, this morning of pneumonia, following influenza. Arlo was three years of age, and only last Saturday his mother was taken. He leaves the bereaved father and a brother, Virgil, one and one-half years old. The funeral will be private and will be held Thursday afternoon, at 3 o’clock from the home of the grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Burnett, on Prentiss street. Interment will be in Oakland cemetery. Friends will sympathize with this family. 18 Dec 1918 – MRS. BURNETT WAS BURIED YESTERDAY 18 Dec 1918 – MRS. WILLIAM MOONE LAID TO REST 18 Dec 1918 - MRS. WILLIAM WREDE DIED AT HILLS, IOWA 18 Dec 1918 – MRS. OTILIA MOEL DIED NEAR SOLON Mrs. Otilia Moel died last night at the home two miles north of Solon. She was twenty-three years of age and was the daughter of the late Jacob Meyers. She is survived by her husband. Funeral services will be held at the home, Friday at half past nine o’clock. Interment will be in Solon cemetery. 18 Dec 1918 – YOUNG NURSE DIES AT MERCY HOSPITAL Sister Mary Petritia, died last night at Mercy hospital. She was thirty-three years of age, and had been a nurse at Mercy hospital for the last ten years. The funeral will be held Friday morning. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s cemetery. 18 Dec 1918 – Card of Thanks – We wish to express our sincere gratitude to our friends and neighbors for their kindness and sympathy shown us during the sickness and at the time of the death of our mother, Mrs. E. Reizenstein. Also for the beautiful floral offerings. The Family. 18 Dec 1918 – CHARLES EULER DEAD IN WASHINGTON Charles Euler is dead at his home in Washington State, according to information received by his sister Miss Mina Euler, whose home is at 421 East Market Street in this city. A brother, Frank, at North English also survives. Deceased at one time lived in Iowa City and will be remembered by many of the old residents. He has visited here several times in recent years. 18 Dec 1918 – The funeral of Mrs. W. M. Moore was held this afternoon at 3 o’clock from Hohenschuh’s Mortuary, the Reverend S. E. Ellis having charge of the services. Burial was in Oakland cemetery. 18 Dec 1918 – The funeral of the late Mrs. Alice M. Means will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock from the home on south Johnson Street. Reverend McBride of Kalona will be in charge of the services. The body will be interred at the Unity cemetery. 19 Dec 1918 - JOSEPH KRAL DIES NEAR NEWPORT - Joseph Kral of Newport passed away, leaving a wife, his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Kral, on Fairchild street, four sisters and three brothers. Mr. Kral was about twenty-three years of age, and a large circle of friends will mourn to hear of his death. 19 Dec 1918 - MRS. WM. REED DIES AT HILLS - Mrs. William Reed passed away at her home in Hills this afternoon at half past two o'clock. Mrs. Reed had been an invalid for many years. Further details and funeral arrangements will be given later. 19 Dec 1918 - INFANT DAUGHTER PASSED AWAY - The infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Cross of Mt. Shrader, east of Iowa City passed away this forenoon, about 4 o'clock. The little one was fourteen months old and died of complications. She leaves besides the parents, one brother Harold and a half brother, Kenneth. A private funeral will be held next Monday forenoon, from the home with interment in Oakland cemetery. 19 Dec 1918 - MRS. GEORGE SWARTZENDRUBER (Naomi) BURIED MONDAY 19 Dec 1918 - FRANK J. KASPER FUNERAL TODAY 20 Dec 1918 – FUNERAL OF LITTLE DAUGHTER MONDAY The funeral of little Margaret Gross, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Gross, of Mt. Shrader, will be private and will be held from the home Monday forenoon at 10’clock. Interment will be in Oakland cemetery. 21 Dec 1918 – Grandma Yoder, the widow of Tobias Yoder was buried last week. She was the mother of Noah T. Yoder of Iowa City and Henry T. and Mahlon T. Yoder of Washington township, Johnson county. She was 91 years of age. 21 Dec 1918 – Mrs. Marble and Miss Elliott have gone to Tipton on account of the death of their sister, Mrs. Murray. 21 Dec 1918 – Paul Strabala, the 14 year old son of Frank Strabala and a grandson of John Strabala of Iowa City died last week of the influenza and its combination. 23 Dec 1918 – LEONARD RARICK OF SCOTT TWP. DIES 24 Dec 1918 – Hills – Mr. Roy Hardy returned Saturday evening from South English, having been called there by the death of his niece and nephew, Mr. & Mrs. Thomas, who died with pneumonia following the flu. 24 Dec 1918 – Card of Thanks – We wish to express our sincere gratitude to our friends who so kindly sympathized with us in our recent bereavement, the death of our beloved son and brother, Frank J. Kreischer. 24 Dec 1918 – AETNA HENDERSON DIED IN THE EAST Aetna Henderson, a gallant marine is dead at Quantico, Va., where he was training for service as one of Uncle Sam’s seamen. The young man was an Oxford boy and his death is made double sad on account of the fact that his sister, Mrs. Tracy Sheldon, of Cedar Rapids, just died two weeks ago. No details are available at this time except that the body of the young man will be returned to the former Johnson County home for burial. Many friends will sympathize deeply with the bereaved relatives in their affliction. 26 Dec 1918 – Coralville – The sudden death of William Reed, a prominent citizen of this place, which occurred recently was a great shock to the community and much sympathy is extended to the bereaved widow and relatives. 26 Dec 1918 – Amish – George Swartzendruber of Green Center who recently lost his wife has brought his four little children to the home of his father-in-law, S. C. Swartzendruber where they are temporarily staying. They expect to return to his Iowa County home as soon as they are able to make the trip. 26 Dec 1918 – Oxford – Mrs. Marak who was here to attend the funeral of her brother, Emil Riddle, the soldier boy who died at Camp Dix, N.J. returned to her Minnesota home last week. 26 Dec 1918 – MRS. EMMA RUTAN DIES IN SEATTLE WASH 26 Dec 1918 - MRS. EMMA PFEIFFER DIED XMAS EVE 26 Dec 1918 – LEO ROHRER PASSED AWAY THIS MORNING 27 Dec 1918 – JOHN R. WALTERS - OXFORD MAN PASSED AWAY LAST NIGHT 27 Dec 1918 – MRS. JOSEPH BRYSCH DIED LAST NIGHT 27 Dec 1918 - R.B. DOBSON - S.U.I. STUDENT DIED OF DREAD PNEUMONIA R.B. Dobson of Des Moines, a graduate student of the university died in the capital city recently of pneumonia according to word received by Dean Seashore of the graduate college. The young man had been ill of influenza here at the university hospital but had recovered seemingly and appeared to be able to make the trip home to spend the Xmas holiday. However, a relapse occurred shortly after his arrival in Des Moines and the unfortunate soldier contracted pneumonia and died within a short time. He was a brilliant student while in school here and was well known and liked by his classmates and by the faculty. 28 Dec 1918 - ROY GITTENS IS DEAD IN FRANCE - Iowa City Boy Makes Supreme Sacrifice With A.E.F. in France 28 Dec 1918 – BABY DAUGHTER OF CHAS. BALLARD DIES 31 Dec 1918 – Mr. H. W. Brenizer has been called to Clinton, Iowa by the death of his father George W.
