Richard
Marks, an Iowa City native and long time resident of New York City,
passed away on October 15, 2010. He was 68.
He
is remembered with admiration by many friends from City High, from
where he graduated as class valedictorian in 1960, to Harvard College
and Medical School in Boston, to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New
York City.
An extraordinary surgeon, he earned the esteem of
his colleagues and the gratitude of his patients in his more than 40
years of service at the hospital. He held many important roles at SLR,
the most recent as Vice Chairman of Surgery, a position he held until
his retirement a few years ago.
Richard was preceded in death by
his father, Arlyn, the former director of personnel at the University
of Iowa until 1960, as well as his mother, Charlotte, and sister,
Harriet. His genuine passion for medicine was rivaled only by a
devotion to family. Richard is loved and honored by his wife of 38
years, Roni; children Michael, Rebecca and Joanna; grandchildren Emma
and Jackson. He is also survived by his cousins John and Anne, Amy and
Heidi; and his Aunt Margaret (Marks) Demitroff and Uncle Jack
Demitroff, both former Iowa City public school teachers (his uncle also
served as registrar at the University of Iowa until 1975) and current
residents of Kingston, Rhode Island.
A memorial service in
celebration of Richard's life is planned for November 20, 2 pm at St.
Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, 1000 Tenth Avenue, New York City.
Richard is buried at Union Cemetery in LaMoille, IL
