The first school was kept by
Jerry Stover in 1842 on the farm (in 1882) owned by John Crane. He had
thirteen pupils; they paid $1.50 each and furnished fuel for a three
month term. The school house stood just over the line in Pleasant
Valley township. It was a log house 16’x16’; six and a half feet high;
split logs for flooring; roof and door made of clapboards, no windows;
big open fireplace, with chimney built of mud and sticks. Light came
down the chimney and in through cracks or holes between logs; for seats
the flat side of split logs supported on pins in the wall or on pin
legs. The first school house was built by the joint labor of the
neighbors.

Center School House When
the Rural School House known as the Center School (one mile south of
Lone Tree) was wrecked recently, its age was revealed. Under the paint
and siding, the name of the builder was recorded as Enoch T. Trimble,
carpenter and jointer. The year of construction was given as 1883. When
the blackboards were recovered, a notation was found to the effect that
this was the second set - installed in 1912 by Jess Baker of Lone
Tree (who later resided in Iowa City). (Source: Iowa City
