Iowa County Cemetery Stones and History 1844-1975 (manuscript) by Pauline Lillie

                                                                      p.1
                    TITLER CEMETERY

Location
Marengo township 81 Range 11, Section 13, previously it was in (Atlas
1900) as Washington Township: Those north side of river vary at differ-
ent times. Cono and Amana- which cut Marengo, Washington and changed
Lenox and then changed again when Amana was taken out; It is mile north
of town of Marengo then ¼ west on black top on the corner.

History
This is one of the earliest of cemeteries, altho the first burials are
listed as 1851, am of the opinion there were several here before. These
people married into families of Marengo, with a few into those east and
several west. They may be found in the next cemetery east, known as the
Bishop (or Denzler) cemetery, the others are west into the athey Cemet-
ery.

Most families had small business operated along with the farms. example
Carter had the brickyard. There still are descendants of these people
living here, but few make any effort to visit the graves. Noticed that
Kenneth Reno Brown stone was gone, second time I copied and previously
I noticed how well it was cared for: Now holes dug existed where the
stone had been with flowers. One might check Iowa City. Family done
research on name.

Very pretty cemetery located on a small hill, with the usual stones, of
the time. No cemetery that I copied stones in the county contained as
many epitaphs, practically every one consisted of at least a line or two.
Some of the stones if four sided with names had an inscription on each
side. "Afflictions sore for ages I bore-- At length God pleased to
give me ease that on the Ludman stone.

Condition
The front near the gate is mowed by relatives, further back is grown
up in prairie grass. Few weeds. The markers contain flags at Decoration
Fence well maintained. The large evergreen tree on the north side was
planted probably by the Titlers, next to the stones, now as a result
some have fell off, broken and others simply off.

Remarks
This one like so many of the old- are maintained out of necessity; How
ever still a few are brought back and buried here. One stone that of
Harriette dau of B. & A. Givens, written - died October 2, 1819, very
plain the 1819, my opinion it should be 1849 for this family was here
at that time. Most of these families are found in the 1881 History and
the Carter-Cary-Gilbert-Givens-Woods, and others in the 1850 Census under
Marengo township.
