Or Berry History by Pauline Lillie
Located
Section 24/25, Fillmore 78 township Range 10, about 2 miles east and
3¼ south of Parnell, on Hy. W 18-
History
Called Berry probably first for a number of reasons, for the early
family of that name lived here on the land. The first was Hermon
Berry, who had the first nursery in the township, planted in the
spring of 1858, in Section 13- Nearly all the orchards in Fillmore
Township were set from these trees -Osage Orange- and Locust Trees
used for fencing. Mr. Berry went to Kansas about the year of 1860
(1881 History.)
Frances M. Berry in Section 25, was born December 1832 in Mononghalo
County West Virginia; Lived there till 1865 located on the farm he now
resides. Went to school here. Married October 7, 1852 to Margaret
Lemley of Monongahala Co. West Va. she was born Oct. 7, 1832: They had
eleven children: James A. (b. Aug. 1st. 1853) Elizabeth J. (b. May 21,
1855) Thomas M. (b. Feb. 18, 1857 d. dec. 5, 1866) Mary C. (b. Feb.1,
1859) John W. (b. Jan. 21, 1860 d. Sept. 14,1865) Samuel C. (b. Nov.5,
1862) George (b. Jan.21,1865 d. May 5, 1866) Silas E. (b. Apr. 14, 1867)
Harriet (b. July 1, 1869), Dora E. (b. Sept. 22, 1871) and Ada (b. Oct.
21, 1874). He has acted as school director almost continuously since
he has been a resident of the State, and the excellence of the school
in his district is greatly due to his labors. He owns a farm of 164
acres. (p. 720 Fillmore township 1881 Hist.)
Frances M. Berry died in 1927 buried here also his wife Margaret in
1913. In the 1874 Atlas p. 15 lists this cemetery on the F. Berry farm.
In the 1900 Atlas p. 11, lists on the Margaret Berry land. The 1915 Atlas
p. 31, lists it on the east side of the road in the corner of southwest
of Section 24; on Margaret Berry Estate farm. The cemetery is not ment-
ioned in the history In Vol. I, 1915 p. 71 More on Edward Berry & family.
Many of the family are buried here, along with other, relatives or
settlers. At one time the Berry School was on their land.
Condition
This cemetery was well kept when I was in there in 1969; However I
understand it is being mowed - So many pretty stones, in good cond-
ition when I was last there, and have no idea of its condition now 1976.
Remarks: In 10-31-1966 stones were read by
