YANKEE POINT CEMETERY
History by Pauline Lillie
Location
Fillmore 78 township, Range 10, Section 21, May be reached from Hy. 149
to Parnell, then south 2 miles west 1 mile to the lane which goes to the
top of hill, going north. May be seen from the county gravel road,
History
No mention in the history of 1881, does appear on the early 1874 Atlas
page 15, on the J.C. Claypool farm Atlas 1915 p. 31 locates this cemetery
in field on the F.C. Claypool farm in the NW section: Few biographies
in the 1881 history. North of this area another different group of people
those around of (now) Parnell); From the Catholic settlements with a church
and cemetery.
This is an old cemetery with burials from 1855, and used to-day by the
descendants living elsewhere. One has only to check the many names in
the cemetery against those of the 1875 Atlas to realize the family con-
nections,
One of the first thing you notice about this cemetery are the very large
grey stones, hugh, and practically all that color. There are a few large
brown ones, may be five, and of course a few of those of early year vintage.
A mausoleum door marker used for the headstone from the Marengo I.O.O.F
after it was closed, is found here for a marker. These were names listed
on the door vault of the Mausolem. This in the Woodward lot.
Another fact I have never seen in any cemetery was the placing of the
funeral markers in cement blocks.
This cemetery is on a hill top with nice hickory nut trees, well mowed,
and cared for; Stones were outstanding for some were old. Most of the
Civil War Veterans were given special attention, with some having new
stones. Only one down stone that of Isabel Welch. That because a tree
cut, and probably waiting for the stump to rot before fixing. This cem-
etery is still being used. (1975)
Condition
Well cared for no weed, what ever, no junk around stones, with gate and
fence in the best condition.
Remarks
Outstanding for an old cemetery.
