January 11,1883 Pioneer (Sioux City Journal notes) Died in Lucky Valley, Woodbury County, Iowa on December 18,1882, Nora E. aged 5 years, December 25, Willie G. aged 9 years, on December 27, Frankie G. aged 4 years, on December 29, Leslie C. aged 7 years, all children of G.M. and Josephine Dodd.
January 13,1883 Era Mr. C.M. Winkler of Grant twp. returned home last Friday from Jasper County, where on Christmas Day he was married to Miss Nettie Kiser.
January 20,1883 Era We are in receipt of cards announcing the marriage of Mr. Merrick B. Dean and Miss Emma L. Dawson which was solemnized at the residence of the bride’s parents in Blaine twp, this county on Thursday the 18th of January, 1883. Mr. Dean is well known to most of our citizens, having been engaged for nearly two years in the store of Dean and Ingman, of this city. Last spring he went to Chicago, where he accepted a position in the establishment of Mashall Field and Co. which he left in the fall to engage in business in Canton, Dakota. he is a young man of strict integrity and high moral character, and makes hosts of friends wherever he goes. The young lady is the daughter of our respected friend, Mr. S.G. Dawson and she is well known in this community, and highly esteemed by one and all, that anything we can say would but voice the popular sentiment of thrice blessed is the man who calls her his wife. The happy couple started Thursday for their home in Canton, followed by the kindly wishes of their many friends.

February 17,1883 Era A telegram was received here Thursday announcing the death of Miss Alice Hanson at her home in Hamilton, Ill. who entered upon that sleep which knows no waking on Wednesday the 14th. Miss Hanson was a niece of Mr. M.M. Gray of this city and for the last two years or more had passed much of the time with the family and with his mother. Miss Hanson came here last September and remained about two weeks ago, when her father came and accompanied her home. She was a victim of that dread disease consumption, which for the past two years had preyed upon her young life, but unitl within a short time she was not considered in immediate danger, and the news of her death comes with a shock to her many friends here and elsewhere. She was about nineteen years of age, and possessed amiable and sunny nature, and highly esteemed by all who new her.
February 15,1883 Pioneer The marriages have been so very numerous hearabouts of late that we can hardly keep track of them all. Last Thursday night Mr. C.C. Joy and Miss Lulu Stoughton were married at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Stoughton, of Maple twp.
February 22,1883 Pioneer Miss Alice Hanson, who had been visiting for some months in Ida Grove with the family of her uncle, Mat M. Gray, died at the home of her parents in Hamilton, Illinois, Wednedsay, February 14. Though very young, being only 19 at the time of her death, Miss Hanson had been for some years afflicted with consumption, but her friends little thought the end was so near. Three years ago her health was poor, so she came to Ida Grove to spend the winter, and our dry climate seemed to agree with her so buch much better than that at her home that she repeated her visit the two subsuquent winters. About three weeks ago she concluded to return home, and just two weeks after arriving at her paternal home she took her departure for that final home from which no traveler returns.

March 1,1883 Pioneer A baby boy has made its appearance at the domicile of John Lampson and is about two weeks old, also one about the same age at Joseph Shearers, this Shearer is no relative of our Frank.

March 22,1883 Pioneer Died at the residence of Elder I.E. Boyer, Mrs. Maria Harman, aged 71 years and 16 days. Her disease was catarrh of the stomach. She was confined to her bed for six weeks, and suffered a great deal, though she bore it all patiently and having been a professed christian for about 40 years, she died in peace and hope. Funeral services by Rev. Woodworth with remarks by Elder A.X. Shoemaker. The deceased was a mother of Mrs. I.E. Boyer, and had been a resident here for about a year.
March 31,1883 Era Ida County is the most productive county in the state, Mrs. Wm. McKim at more than 45 years of age has recently given birth to her fifteenth child.
April 12,1883 Pioneer Barney Ward our blind pressman, remarked this week, several times, while running off the first side of the PIONEER, how much easieir the press run than usual. In fact he turned er off in just 27 minutes sooner than usual. We have since learned the cause, they have a little Easter Sunday boy at their house.
April 14,1883 Era Married at the residence of A.E. Smith, in Ida Grove on April 6,1883, Mr. Fred Hilker and Miss Sophia Klemme, both of Battle Creek.
April 19,1883 Pioneer Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lon F. Chapin, Monday, April 9, a baby daughter. Mother and daughter doing nicely, and faterh, well, we are probaly the proudest editor in Iowa today.
April 21,1883 Era During the severe storm of last Friday night, the house of a man named Diamond, four and a half miles west of Danbury, was struck by lightning, and a little son of Mr. and Mrs. Diamond, sleeping between his parents was instantly killed. Two dogs sleeping under the bed were also killed. Mr. and Mr. Diamond were rendered unconscious, the latter remaining so for twenty-four hours, but her recover y is assured. At this writing her husband is in critical condition and not expected to live.
April 26,1883 Pioneer Our baby reporter says that J.B. Cooper and Velt Wilcox, two young farmers north of Ida Grove, were passing cigars last Tuesday, a boy at Cooper’s and a girl at Wilcox’s.

May 31,1883 Pioneer We are sorry to learn that A.E. Wood’s youngest child died since he went to Nebraska.
June 7,1883 Pioneer The creul angel of death has called away two little folks from our city during the past few days. Sunday morning, little Willie, aged three years, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Benedict, passsed away, rheumatism of the heart was the cause. That night following wrought sadness in the home circle of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Rollins, their little girl May, about four years, died with spotted fever.
May Merton, daughter of C.W. and Mrs. Rollins, was born at Clinton, Iowa February 5,1879 and entered into rest from the home of her parents in Ida Grove on June 4,1883, being 4 years and 4 months old. The disease was cerebra spinal meningitis. The first intimation of May’s illness was Saturday morning, June 2, and though anxious human skill was done, all was in vain, she died early the following Monday. Little May will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

June 28,1883 Pioneer Died June 25,1883, at the residence of her daughter in the old town, Mrs. Deal, aged 61 years. The remains were taken to Boone for interment.

June 28,1883 Pioneer L.A.. berry, of the law firm Gray and Berry of this city, was married yesterday in Gliman, Iowa to Miss Minnie Sparks. Mr. Berry and his bride will return to this place next week and will commence to housekeeping in the old town.
July 7,1883 Era A happy event took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. T. Bassett, Tuesday, being the marriage of their daughter, Miss Mary and W.C. Moorehead. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Woodworth, in the presence of only the relatives and a few intimate friends of the bride and groom. Both parties have long been residents of Ida Grove and each enjoy the highest esteem of a large circle of acquaintances and the best wishes go to them. They went to Davenport for a brief visit, and will return next week.

July 14,1883 Era Killed By Lightning During the thunder storm which passed over a portion of this county Tuesday, Thomas Belt, a young man who with his brother J.H. Belt, owns a farm ten miles southwest of Ida Grove, was struck by lightning and killed. His brother was away from home at the time and the unfortunate young man’s remains were not found till the next day. His watch and chain were melted in places and some silver money in his pocket were soldered together as neatly as a brazier could have done it. Coroner Blake was summoned and held an inquest on the body and the verdict was returned in accordance with the above facts. Mr. J.H. Belt, who had been on a visit east, returned Thursday and took charge of the remains of his brother, which he had conveyed to Marengo, Iowa for burial.

August 2,1883 Pioneer Margie, a little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Sacquety, aged two months and sixteen diays, who reside over on the Avenue, died last Monday, with inflamation of the brain.

August 16,1883 Pioneer Christina Haage, a German girl who has been working at the City Hotel, committed suicide last Monday morning by hanging herself in the cellar of the hotel where she worked. She was about 20 years old, a bright and intelligent girl. She came from Germany about four months ago, and had but one relative, a sister in this country. She was buried in Grant twp. A coronors jury were three days trying to find out the cause of the rash act, but arrived at no conclusion except mental aberation. The young woman was engaged to be married at the time of her death, to a smart young man who works in the hotel. It was a very sad affair.
August 23,1883 Pioneer A little son of Mr. Tim died in this city last Sunday, with cholera infantum.
August 25,1883 Era Mr. Noah Williams was married Tuesday evening to Miss L.J. Cottrell of Hudson, Blackhawk County.
August 25,1883 Era Died at the residence of his parents in Blaine twp. Ida County on August 21,1883, Charles Wilcox in the 23rd years of life.
August 25,1883 Era Mr. Jonathon Ream was born in Stark County, Ohio, December 3,1827, and died at his home in Ida Grove on August 15,1883. Mr. Ream left for his home in Ohio in 1848 and went to California. The following year he married his first wife. Afterwards he removed to Indiana and after ten years of marriage his wife died leaving him with three small children. In 1863 he married his second wife and lived for some time in Illinois, but in 1879 he buried his second wife in the cemetery in Ida Grove. He leaves a wife, one daughter and four sons to mourn his death. He was a member of the M.E. Church and the last few months of his life was an earnest Christian.

September 15,1883 Era A very quiet wedding took place at the residence of Mr. L.D. Ingman on Tuesday evening, the high contracting parties being Miss Allie Ingman and Mr. J.A. Frink, one of our popular and talented attorneys. The affair was quite informal, but three of four friends outside of the relatives being present, and no display made. The ceremony was performed by Rev. A.E. Smith.

September 22,1883 Era From Rev. A.X. Shoemaker, the officiating clergyman, we learn of a pleasant and interesting affair which took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Butt, of Logan twp., the occasion being the marriage of their daughters, Miss Kittie to Mr. D.H.High and Miss Ida to Mr. E.T. Ward. A large number of guests were present, and the event was one long to be remembered by all.
September 27,1883 Pioneer Died last Thursday morning, James McBride, a blacksmith by trade, at his boarding house, The Farmers Home. Jim was a steady fellow and a resident of Ida Grove for five or six years. He was sixty-four years old, a bacheolr and a very peculiar man, one of his peculiarities being he was hardly ever seen at any public meeting or place. He preferred a quiet life. He had no relatives, but many friends, who cared fro him in his last days. Mr. VonDohren and all his boarders did all they could to encourage and assist him in his illness.
October 6,1883 Era On Tuesday morning H. Linebaugh, a brakeman on Conductor Simpson’s train, was caught between two cars while making a coupling at Mapleton, and was so severely injured that yesterday he was not expected to live through the day. He had but just commenced braking on the road and was making his first trip when this terrible misfortune befell him. We understand he has a large family dependent upon him for support and upon whom his death will fall with heavy weight.
October 6,1883 Era Dr. Tremaine reports the arrival at his house on Sunday, its a boy, short and fat and eight pounds.
October 11,1883 Pioneer The wife of R.F. Crane died October 1,1883, and was buried October 3. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn her loss.
October 13,1883 Era The marriage of Mr. Frank R. Cook and Miss Hattie Jordan, of which brief mention was made in the Era last week, was a quiet by exceedingly pleasant affair, as all such occasions should be. A number of friends from Des Moines and other areas were present as were as a few of the friends of the family in this place.
October 13,1883 Era Shocking Death On Monday of this week, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Bell, of Logan twp, met with a terrible bereavement in the sudden death, by accident of Wilby, one of their little boys, aged about nine years. As we understand it, the little fellow was upstairs in the hired man’s room, and picked up a revolver which had been carelessly left lying on the stand. While handling it one chamber of it which was loaded was discharged, the contents entering the boy’s forehead and killing him almost instantly. It is a distressingly sad affair and calls for the deepest sympathy to the parents. The funeral was held Wednesday and the remains were followed to their last resting place by a large number of sympathizing friends.

October 25,1883 Pioneer We are now going to chronicle one of the wonders of Ida County. A few days ago the wife of Alex Goin, of Douglas twp., this county, gave birth to three children, two girls and one boy, all of whom are doing finely.
October 27,1883 Era A new girl at the home of Wm Heppner, and Mrs. Greenly Gingrich nee Miss Code Hepner, is “ma”.

November 1,1883 Pioneer Married at Clarence, Iowa on October 31,1883, at the residence of the parents of the bride, Mr. H.B. Pierce and Miss Ida L. Eastman.
November 8,1883 Pioneer Married at Ida Grove on November 8, by Rev. F.M. Archer, Mr. T.J. Maynard and Mrs. A.E. Maynard all of Mapleton, Iowa.
November 8,1883 Pioneer Died on November 3,1883, of quick consumption, Mr. J.H. Hyatt aged 49 years and two months. Deceased was born in Muskingum County, Ohio and moved to Ida Grove from eastern Iowa about a year ago. He was a carpenter by trade, but for the last six months or so has been employed in the Lusk and Davis store. He was taken down with this disease about October 13th and became unconscious upon the second day, and remained in that condition most of the time during his illness. He suffered a great deal, but was a very good patient. He was a hardworking and honorable man and leaves a wife and two children, one a boy of 16 and the other a daughterthe wife of Mr. Hecht of Logan.

November 22,1883 Pioneer A sixteen pound boy at Geo. Cooper’s causes quite a lot of commotion at the house.
November 22,1883 Pioneer Married on the 16th of October, W. Hugh Nicol and Miss Maggie Reid. Rev. Mr. Smith officiated. Mr. James Nicol, brother of the bridegroom gave the bride away. Mr. David Paterson, farmer from Battle Creek was groomsman and Miss Agnes Lizzie Turnbull attended as bridesmaid.
November 29,1883 Era Rev.J.W. Southwell is now the happy father of a bouncing boy. The young gentleman arrived last Sunday and pulled the beam at 13 pounds.
November 29,1883 Era C.M. Waddell died last Friday in the 74th year of his life. A few minutes before his death he was apparently as well as usual. In the morning he went over to his son chet’s farm and asked James Waddell, his nephew, to drive to Galva with him to take in a load of barley. On their way home, and when within but a short distance of the house the old gentleman died in the wagon, and fell over into his nephew’s arms. The last word he ever uttered was “whoa”, which he spoke as he fell. The horses did not obey the last command of their master, but Nature took the mandate to itself and stopped the machinery of life at the moment he said whoa. Mr. C.M. Waddell was one of the pioneers of Ida County, having lived in this state for 50 years and in Ida County for 6 years. But few men ever lived in Iowa who have gone through the trials and hardships endured by this sturdy old pioneer. Now he is asleep, let him rest in peace.
November 29,1883 Era Last Saturday evening the spirit of Jimmie, son of Mr. Fergus O’Brien took its departure for the unknown realms of future life. Jimmie was a bright little boy of five years, was the idol of a fond mother and doting father who are nearly crushed with grief at the sudden taking away of the flower of their flock. November 29,1883 Holstein Era News Married last Saturday, George Boszhardt was called upon by Mr. Nicholas Ehrp and Miss Lina Schaer, who requested that he perform the ceremony that would make them one.
December 6,1883 Pioneer Died on December 2,1883 at the home of L. Tinkel, in this city, Mr. Daniel Tinkel, age 72. Deceased was born in Rockingham County, VA, and came to Iowa, locating in Glenwood, Mills County in 1850. He is the father of our citizen, L. Tinkel. he was always a healthy and hardworking man, but was taken with a cancer in the groin a few months ago, which caused his death. He lost his wife several years ago, and for the past year or two has made his home with his son in this city. Mr. Tinkel was a man of few words and always wanted to be at work. A man of kind disposition and noble character. He leaves three children, all of whom are married and have homes of their own. His son L. Tinkel, and son in law, Mr. Bailey of Correctionville, and a few other relatives, accompanied the remains to Glenwood last Monday, where he will be laid away with tender care by the side of the good old lady who had so long ago been his loving partner.
December 12,1883 Era Married December 8,1883, at the residence of Nelles Hansen, brother of the groom in Logan twp, but Rev. A.E. Smith, Mr. Hans N. Hansen and Miss Louisa Zinow of Chicago.
December 20,1883 Era The sad news announcing the death of Mrs. Eva V. Greene, aged 32 years, wife of Mr. J.L. Greene of Sanborn, Iowa, formerly of Ida County, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Duguid of Marshalltown, was received here last Saturday. Mrs. Greene was visiting her parents at the time of her death and had been sick only a few days, and died Friday morning last, at five o’clock of brain fever.
December 27,1883 Era Tim Cole is the handsome father of a 12 pound baby. The young gentleman came to town last week, Monday, and is now visiting his mother at their resident on Main Street.
December 27,1883 Era Mr. Perry James of Logan twp. was married Christmas Day about noon, at the residence of A.E. Smith, to Miss Mina Gilmore, of Silver Creek twp. After the ceremony the pair drove to the home of E.T. James and took dinner. The afternoon was then passed in general jollification in which a few intimate friends took part.
December 27,1883 Era Died at his residence on the north side at 9 o’clock Tuesday morning was W.O. Pattee, on December 25,1883, of stomach trouble, aged 66. His remains were taken to Janesville, Iowa for interment. He leaves a family of grown children.
