Mary Rose Furkoff was born in New York City and placed in a foundling home. Children were brought to Stuart, IA in railroad cars and you had a choice of a light or dark eyed child. Mary Rose was 18 months old and had beautiful dark eyes. Aunt Nell wanted to adopt her but in those days a single lady couldn't adopt a child so Grandma and Grandpa Russell said they would adopt her. Before long Grandpa Russell was killed. Mary Rose was never adopted. When she was 16 years old, she entered the Sisters of Humility at Ottumwa. She is a teacher of every kind of music and is a beautiful artist. We are all very proud of her.

Sister Marie Fleurette Russell

DAVENPORT -- Services for Sister Marie Fleurette Russell CHM (Marie Rose Russell), 80, of Humility of Mary Center, Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at The Humility of Mary Center Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Sister Russell died Sunday at Humility of Mary Health Care Center.

Visitation is 4-9 p.m. today at the center, where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m.

Halligan-McCabe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She retired in 1986 as an art and music teacher and had taught at Parnell, Ottumwa, Des Moines, West Des Moines, LaMars, Davenport, and Marshalltown, Iowa and in Minneapolis.

Memorials may be made to Sisters of Humility Retirement fund.

She graduated from St. Ambrose College, Davenport.

She entered the congregation of the Sisters of Humility in 1925 in Ottumwa. She professerd her vows in 1928.

She was proficient at music and could play most instruments.

Survivors include nieces, Regina Ebert, Moline, and Alice Conley, Des Moines.
