Strait Family Homestead
SW of Humboldt, IA
This is the homestead of the Strait
family taken before 1897.
The believed identification of the
persons in this picture are as follows:
Joshua Strait (older man), Orabel
and her husband John Bowen Strait, Sr (son
of Joshua) and three sons of John
Bowen Strait Sr.
John Bowen Strait Jr., Edward Strait,
George Sherman Strait or
Luther J. Strait (one son was taking
the picture?).
The 160 acre farm was 1 mile east
of Clare, Iowa and 5 miles north.
It was right on the corner
of the road that is directly east of
Pioneer...There was acres of different
kinds of apple trees
that the older generations were known
for. Also a huge vegetable
garden-& mulberry trees,etc.
According to Mary Strait Stratton
who was the granddaughter of Luther J. Strait,
she and her brothers were the 5th
generation to live on this homestead.
Mary is the daughter of Walter L.
and Mable (Hood) Strait.
After Luther and his wife Isabelle
died, this property was sold and the
new owners tore down the house.
