SLETTEN, Darrell "Shorty" 1935 - 2001

Darrell "Shorty" Sletten, age 65, died Monday, April 2, 2001 at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage. He was born December 1, 1935 at the family home near Swaledale, Iowa, the son of Henry and Ruby (Cassel) Sletten. His family moved to near Brownville, Iowa, in 1941, where he attended the Brownville Country School, and then graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1955. He served in the United States Air Force as a radar operator from 1956 to 1958.

Darrell was united in marriage to Shirley Thompson on July 11, 1956 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. In December 1958, they moved to Brownville where they farmed on the family farm. In 1971, they moved to their current home south of Osage. For the past 30 years Darrell was an over-the-road semi truck driver. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed camping and visiting with people.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sat., April 7, 2001 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with Rev. Dennis Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery, with the Military Rites performed by the Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour before services at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Sletten of Osage; one son, Rick Sletten and his wife Suzanne of Osage and their three children; two daughters, Cindy Niess and her husband Vernon of Osage and two children, and Kathy Blake and her husband David of Osage and two children; one brother, Lyle Sletten and his wife Lee of Salt Lake City, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Henry Sletten, Jr.; and one sister, Lucille During.
