FREDERICKSBURG - George L. Shawver, 84, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at Friendship Village, Waterloo.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. June 9 at United Methodist Church, Fredericksburg with Pastor Pam Flanigan officiating. Music was provided by Ethel Mattke as organist and John Loftus as vocalist singing "In The Garden and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee". Congregational hymns were "How reat Thou Art" and "God Be With Thee Till We Meet Again".

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg. Casket bearers were grandsons, Brian Rowe, John Shawver, James Shawver, Ryan Shawver, Wade Anderson and Eric Rowe. Honorary casketbearers were Wiley Ball, Duane Cahoy, Darwin Slick, Nels Jensen, Robert Davis and Ted Moldenhauer.

George was born Dec. 29,1916 in Kirkville, the son of Cyrus Jesse and Carrie (Thomas) Shawver. He received his education in Kirkville, graduating from high school in 1934 and then attending an engineering school in Chicago. He was united in marriage to Helen Wilson at Lancaster, MO on Feb. 13, 1937. George started Shawver Well Co. in 1936 in Ottumwa. He served with the Army from 1942 to 1946. In 1948 he moved Shawver Well Co. to Fredericksburg, where he continued to work until retiring in 1981. George served one term as a state senator in 1970. He was a charter member of the Lions Club and Plum Creek Golf Course, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of tne American Legion. George served on the City Council for seven years and was the Grand Marshall at Dairy Days in 1995. He enjoyed boating, fishing and traveling. In 1998 he moved to Friendship Village in Waterloo, due to a decline in health.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, Waterloo; three children and their spouses, Marvin (Evelyn) Shawver, Le-Claire, Jan (Tom) Rowe, Freeport, 1L and Gary (Pam) Shawver, Waterloo; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Benjamin.
