Rose Marie Schmadeke, 74, died Saturday evening, March 3, 2001 at her home in Fredericksburg.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 7 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church/Richfield, rural Sumner, with Pastor Milton D. Johnson officiating. Eva Mae Niewoehner was organist, accompanying vocalist Gene Niewoehner.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, with Jay Sheffner, Marie Schmadeke, Brent Schmadeke, Tom Schmadeke, Jill Sheffner Johnson and Nicole Schmadeke Becker as casket bearers.

Rose was born Oct. 23, 1926 on the family farm north of Fredericksburg, the daughter of Walter and Minna (Kottke) Thome. She was baptized Dec. 5, 1926 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Boyd and confirmed June 1, 1941 at Peace Evangelical & Reformed Church in Fredericksburg. Rose attended elementary school in Fredericksburg and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1944. She was united in marriage with Ralph William Schmadeke on June 10, 1945 at St. John Lutheran Church, Sumner. The couple farmed the Whitcomb farm east of Fredericksburg from 1948 to 1965 where they were Grade A dairy producers. In 1962 Rose started working for Meinerz Creameries, retiring in 1992 from Beatrice Cheese Inc.

She enjoyed working in her garden, playing cards, sewing, aking cookies, fishing, traveling and spending time with her family. Rose was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church,Richfield where she was active in WELCA and Sarah Circle, ast secretary of AAL local ranch #5383, AmVet Auxiliary Post 90 where she served in several offices and the Stitch & Chatter Club.

Surviving are two sons, Robert (Nancy), Grundy Center, Richard (Kathy), Fredericksburg; a daughter, Ruth Ann (Jim) Sheffner, Sumner; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; four stepgreat-grandsons; a sister, Marguerite Ingram, Charles City.

Preceding .her in death were her husband, Ralph on May 1, 2000; her parents; two brothers, Winfield and Clarence Thorne; a sister, Mary Louise in infancy.

Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home, Fredericksburg, was in charge of arrangements.
